UK Nexus One - No 3G? - Nexus One General

Hi all,
I'm working through settnig up my new Nexus One which I purchased directly from Google. I am based in the UK and using the O2 network.
As of yet i've been unable to get a 3G connection. My old phone, HTC Rose, could get 3G (or HSDPA) both at home and in the office. I've yet to see my N1 get any 3G connection at all. It does however connect using GPRS, but this is too slow to be useful and won't sync properly.
I went into the testing menu and changed the band to 'euro' in the hope this would resolve the issue. No change. Should this be set to euro for UK, or just Auto? I don't travel much these days so not worried about roaming issues.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Is it possible you need to manually input the APN settings (Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names)?
I had to do this to get data working with my 3 SIM.

Interesting. I had no idea there were such things for 3G and as such have no idea what i'd need to enter for O2! I'll have a quick google.

Okay, I created an APN called 'o2', told it the APN was 'mobile.o2.co.uk' and left the other details as default. I enabled the APN (I believe) and now have a G icon on the task bar with up/down arrors that appear to be doing something. I assume this is the sync stuff rather than an indication of 3G connection.
In the phone details/network section, it still states GPRS.

correct, G is not 3G, so you are on GPRS connected at the moment.
I live in Switzerland with a US Nexus, no problem at all with 3G/Edge/G.

I haven't tried these as I'm not with o2, but this looks like it might be useful for you:

edit: my post-count isn't high enough yet to post links, so you'll have to add http:// to the beginning of that address above.

mine pops up with a 3g icon, it doesn't indicate HSPDA although you can see this by dialling
*#*#4636#*#*
in there you will also see some different network connection options that might help
I think the preferred network type should be set to WCDMA Preferred.
this means it will use 3G whenever its available.
I'm on vodafone but I Assume this is the same for O2

My nexus one qutomatically picked up the settings for my Vodafone SIM - most new phones should do this but it will depend on your tariff.
All though I do not know anything about o2 but For example with vodafone - they have 4 different APN settings depending on whether you're contract or PAYG plus Web or voda live access ... crazy!
So I assume o2 have the same so you are best suited to try all of them - one will definitely work.
I have no idea if these access points make any difference - all I know is I'm online getting 3G and my bill is unaffected
a quick googling:
O2 WAP settings (GPRS):
Note: Different settings for contract and PAYG (Pay as you go)
Homepage: http://wap.o2.co.uk/
APN address (contract): wap.o2.co.uk
APN address (PAYG): payandgo.o2.co.uk
Gateway (IP) address : 193.113.200.195
Username : o2wap (contract) / payandgo (PAYG)
Password: password
Session type: Continuous / permanent

I use my Nexus One in London with O2 ,and the 3 APN appears automaticly when i enter my SIM.

Hi,
I've gone through this and added the two APN's and rebooted the phone. Unfortunately i'm still not getting a 3G connection but can't confirm if this is simply down to poor reception where I am or another/remaining issue.
I'll have to wait until this evening to see once I leave the office!
Thanks

This is interesting. I'm wondering if the difference is that i'm an O2 Business customer, not residential. I definitely didn't get any automatic APN's!
If you get time, would you mind sharing the info of the APN's you've got that work? and/or confirm they're the same as on the forum link guide above
Thanks

I'm on O2 too and I'm definitely getting the 3G icon with those details:
APN mobile.02.co.uk
Username vertigo
Password password
I haven't done any speed tests though.

you could be experiencing the spotty 3G connection issues. I'm using a Business O2 Simcard on a Nexus One, if you're getting a G signal I think that means your APN settings are correct.
I solved my issues by:
Doing the *#*#4636#*#* command from the phones dialer
Clicking "Phone Information"
Scrolling down to the pull down menu which will probably be set to "WCDMA preferred"
Changing this to "WCDMA only"
Waiting for this to register and for me it then shows a 3G signal.
Then I turned this back to "WCDMA preffered" and it seemed to 'remember' it was in a 3G area.
I think I had to do it once more in an area where I should have been getting 3G but apart from that it's been fine.

The APN settings wont make any difference (other than not connecting to either G or 3G at all).
It's going to be down to lack of 3G coverage in the area, either through a 3G cell fault, or no nearby cells.
If the phone fails to find 3G in areas which other phones get full signal, check *#*#4636#*#* with WCDMA only, if it continues to fail your phone is faulty.

@xd_sjo I use an O2 15£pay as you go

Unfortunately, o2's Network sucks.
They said they had the largest EDGE network to get the iPhone... They Don't, Orange do.
My brother found this out the hard way, NEVER getting EDGE and barely ever getting 3G.
The problem lies in their laziness. Unfortunately they own very low frequency bands (950mhz I think) so their basestations are very sparsely populated. Great if you live in a rural area, or in a mine, but terrible if you live in a town (or just outside of the town centre as my case was), especially when the cell shrinks due to the amount of people connecting to the single base station.
On the ofcom website it shows the basestations on a map for UK users; in my area There are 4 3/T-mo basestations, 3 Orange basestations, 2 Vodafone (one 2G only), and 1 o2 Basestation.
Don't think i'm biased because this comes from a person who has a family connected to every network; sister and brother-in-law on Orange with a G1 and N95 8gig, Brother with iPhone on o2, brother with iPhone on o2 and Nexus One on 3, Mother with vodafone getting a new phone soon, and myself, stuck with T-mobile UK, the bane of UK networks.
3 get's 3G EVERYWHERE (and uses Oranges EDGE), and although T-mo share the basestations, they get NO coverage, except in town centres with massive blackspots and shocking bandwidth. With the nexus however, T-mo gets even worse coverage, while even 3 gets worse coverage.
Vodafone have excellent coverage but I couldn't comment on 3G coverage so i'll leave that to someone else. Orange seem to have little minions following their users around with mobile basestations because there isn't a single place my sister doesn't get signal (3G) and also EDGE everywhere. Finally, o2. umm, no EDGE where there should be, even in town, 3G speeds are faster than T-mobile's when you get them.
Actually I suppose I am being a little biased. O2 does get excellent coverage, just nothing usable for internet/browsing usage.
And for those in America; those are the available networks in the UK, all of which are WCDMA.

Yeah, I think if you are getting GPRS (G symbol) they your APN is probably correct.
I certainly only have one APN for Orange, and that works for both GPRS and 3G.
You probably just don't have good 3G signal where you are.
p.s. I haven't encountered any of the alleged problems with 3G / GPRS switching on my Nexus one, it gets 3G in all of the same places my iphone did and happily switches down to GPRS when needed.

Hey,
Im also running nexus one on o2, up here in Manchester, I had to manually add the APN, these are the only settings I added(im on pay monthly):
Name: o2 web
APN: mobile.o2.co.uk
username: mobileweb
password: password
works 100% for me, across all speeds.

I tried my Nexus with 3 - and it refused to get a 3G connection - it also indicated it was in "roaming" mode and refused to change despite waiting 24 hours. I got a refund/cancelled my monthly payment. I moved over to Vodaphone and it took the phone 2 days to finally have the new sim authorised for 3G. I'd guess you might just need to be patient (although I guess its more than 2 days since you started this now)
Goodluck in your 3G search.

Not sure why you needed to wait 2 days for 3G to be authorised? All Vodafone SIMs work on 3G (although it's worth getting a newer one anyway), and nothing
needs to be done at account level to grant access. You just need a 3G phone and a cell which provides 3G.

APN settings for Smart/Globe in the philippines?

I have searched around but can't seem to find this info, does anyone have it? and does everything work (except the 3g of course)?
Sorry to resurrect a dead thread but I thought it would be better than making a new one. Well then let's get to my story
I've recently moved here to the Philippines for school(actually I moved yesterday) and I brought my G1 with me which I got unlocked from T-Mobile. I have a Globe SIM card now but it seems like the 3G antennae won't work and the icon won't even show up. It's like as if my APN was disabled by APNdroid but it's not and I can turn it on and off with APNdroid but still no 3G/EDGE icon. I'm running cyanogen 4.2.15.1 and using that upgraded radio found on this forum if that helps any. Could someone help me connect to the internet here in the Philippines with a Globe SIM card on a G1? BTW I'm in Dumaguete.
>internet here in the Philippines with a Globe SIM card on a G1?
>
Hello,
I was just using it for the first time here.
Here is what I did:
Menu -> Settings -> Wireless controls -> Mobile networks -> Uncheck .. only 2G .. -> Access Point Names -> Menu -> New APN
Name: Globe inet
APN: http.globe.com.ph
User name: none
Password: none
Click Back button
Now, in order to disable this so any service on the phone will not connect without knowledge, I created a dummy APN with
Name: none
APN: none
Select the dummy when you are done with your internet usage.
As for Smart, I think you need:
APN: internet
Username: leave blank
Password: leave blank
or else try with none / none
You can also check a friends Nokia (and probably others) phone settings for APN settings and duplicate them.
Does philippines have a 3G network? I can't seem to get any...
Yes, there is 3G most places, and 3.5G in and around most cities.
Both Smart and Globe have good coverage, but Sun is mostly Manila / Luzon based regarding 3G and 3.5G.
Sun has awesome 3G / 3.5G unlimited internet. Both in speed and price.
If my DSL fails or I am not at home, I use Globe. Only if that is too slow, I try Smart.
It all depends on the carriers coverage in our area, of course.

yes, there is a 3G Network here in the Phils. (surprisingly so)
you just have to create an APN with the correct proxy settings, and voila! you now have 3G Network reception. just make sure that you've set up a dummy APN so the open 3G won't eat up credits while you're not using it.

hi there, the settings above have posted the correct values already
and here are some guidelines:
Name: myglobe internet
(you can actually put any name here, as this is just an identifier for the APN setting for your phone, much like how you can rename your Local Area Network on windows)
Apn: http.globe.com.ph
(take note its a <dot> that succeeds http and not a <://> remember this is not a protocol but an access point name)
Authentification: pap or chap
(there is a "pap or chap" option, this does not mean choose any between "Pap" or "Chap", as the former means both)
All other fields blank except default for
Mcc: 515
Mnc: 02
APN type: internet (please select this explicitly, its labeled "internet")
I've even tried those but still no success. I don't know why.
Happen to be in the USA at the moment and have not gone to sleep yet.
Here is the info I had saved. I believe it matches the other post. you might see if you can set up internet using another carrier, just to verify that the problem is not elsewhere in your phone settings or a hardware problem.

If it doesn't work does that mean the phone is messed up? WiFi works on the phone and everything else is fine. Just I can't seem to get any connection with my supersurf50..

Have you played around with these settings:
settings/mobile network settings/data enabled
settings/mobile network settings/2g (you want this off when you want data access)
settings/mobile network settings/network mode (see what happens when you choose WCDMA only, this would at least show that you have a 3G signal, try a different location)
Good luck!
PS I do not have an HTC Dream, so I do not know if there are any phone specific settings that you can do.
PPS I hate to ask the question, have you verified that this phone operates on the 3G frequency (2100Mhz) used in the Philippines?

Well, I was trying to fix my apn settings on my sgs2 import because I was not getting mms messages and I used the "Reset to default" feature in the apn menu. I got three new apn settings that replaced the ones I had put in manually. The new ones are: ATT PHONE, ATT WAP, and BROADBAND. The settings seem to match the ones that are commonly sited for AT&T "4g" phones. So my guess is that AT&T recognized something new about my phone and gave me the "new" sgs2 settings. I used to get the Cingular 410 settings. Everything is working fine now.
You may want to just try Reset to default. I have the new AT&T "4g" sim and I am in the DC area just for reference.

To anybody on a grandfathered unlimited plan or the data for non-Smart Phones plan don't do this. I did, and like the OP said, it overlayed new default settings. These setting don't work unless you're on a 4G data plan. I lost all data connectivity afterward. I deleted the new (now the default) APN settings and replaced them with a new APN I had to create with the orignal settings. I'm also guessing for this to have happened that AT&T now recognizes the international SGS2 as a 4G phone running on their network. Otherwise, why would the default APN settings suddenly change? I hope this doesn't mean the end of the (almost) free ride we've been getting. So any APN settings posted from the AT&T version of the phone will be useless unless you're being billed for an official 4G plan.

Just to clarify, I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan, have a 4g sim and had my account changed to the use the 4G SOC code : HSDPPB. So in my case unlimited data and 4g are not mutually exclusive. I am getting the same speeds (6mbs - 8mbs) as I was when I manually entered the recommended setting from the "fix your apn" thread but now my mms is working.
I am not recommending anyone do it or not do it, just sharing my experience.

Anyone on a 4G plan, no matter how they got there, would benefit from the new APN. Anyone on a 3G plan will lose data connectivity. I get up to 8MB down in a fake-4G area using the Cingular 410 APN on a 3G plan. I get 3MB down at home in an area that's not been upgraded.
APN Settings for 3g on AT&T
Hi everyone. I added a new APN using the settings that BarryH_GEG posted. I had just bought the SGS2 I9100 off eBay. It was bought at a great price. Now, when I had put in my Sim card, it was not recognizing the data network. Weird because it showed my Sim contacts and my Sim and Network info in the About the Phone section in Settings. Because of this forum, it now reads my Sim along with the 3G ATT network. I was starting to get pissed, then realized it was just the APN settings. Now everything works great. Best phone I have ever owned. Thanks again BarryH_GEG for the settings info..

First roll back to XXKPA modem.
Then create two APNs.

APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com

APN Protocol: IPv4/IPV6
APN Type: default,supl,fota,dun
***SAVE!***
Then create the second:
Name: Broadband
APN: Phone
APN Protocol: IPv4
***SAVE!***
Select the radio button for Broadband APN.
Enable and then disable Airplane Mode.
Then you will see the 3g/H+ icons flashing and you are done!

The APN depends on the type of DATA (3G/4G) that is provisioned (SOC) on each individual's account.
1) wap.cingular is the correct APN if your account is provisioned for 3G DATA
2) phone is the correct APN if your account is provisioned for 4G DATA
With regards to the 3G/H/H+ icon that depends on the cell site and not the APN configured on the phone. With GSM technology, the phone tells the cell site this is what I am capable of and the cell site tells the phone what it is capable of and then the phone utilizes the best possible option.
As an example, if the cell site is upgraded to HSPA+ the phone will display H+, if the cell site is only capable of UMTS it would display 3G.

Here is a thread I started a while back that discusses my findings with APNs on AT&T...

Basically, the pta apn worked best and you have to be on the LTE data plan and have an LTE sim to use it. More information is in the thread I posted.

Net10 Sim Issues.....Anybody Else?

I have had my Nexus 4 about a week and a half now. I am trying to decide what service to go with, and I have tired a T-Mobile prepaid sim and am currently attempting to use Net10 Sim with an ATT micro-sim purchased from Best Buy.
I have been having so many data issues with Net10, I would say it is not even usable. My APN settings are below, but doing some internet searches, it seems like there are Data connectivity issues with Net10? I was just going to see if anybody else has experienced this and if they found a way to tweek the APN settings to make this work. Net10 support reps have yet to offer any solution. I go for periods without any data at all while my signal is blue with an H (I am typically on HSPA+ 15 or 10). I cannot use many of my apps that require data and I have to refresh websites multiple times to get it to load.
Do the same issues exist on Straight Talk with the ATT Micro-Sim? I did not have any issues like this with the T-Mobile prepaid sim so I do not believe it is a radio issue. I am trying to find out about ATT through either straight-talk or Net10 since T-Mobile does not have a signal in my wife's school. Thanks!

I've updated this setting. Data is very slow and I am still unable to use some apps that work fine on WiFi such as SatelliteGuys (works after I try several times), XDA (haven't used successfully) & SpeedTest (doesn't work says network communication issues) & DishRemote App (can't login even). Google music seems to work and I can send texts, will try an mms soon. I'm really thinking this is an issue with Net10. I've barely used any data so I don't think I am throttled. Really bad service thus far.
Assuming Straight Talk has the same issues with the ATT service? BTW, I am in the Kansas City metro area, full strength.
i used to have net10 and on some days the internet wouldn't work
Any data interruption, I would say it's AT&T service in your area. NET10 is the same as Straight Talk, once you set your APN and data works, it just works. You may want to check by borrowing a friend's SIM Tmo, AT&T or any compatible network, set the right APN, test, troubleshoot and compare. Another issue could be your radio.
If you input the first proxy, some apps/things won't work and may be blocked from access i.e. speedtest

[Q] Signal issues with Samsung Galaxy S4

Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4, but instead of enjoying my new toy , I have been busy troubleshooting a weird problem.
I am using a lyca mobile sim in my phone (lyca mobile here in Australia uses telstra as the provider) . Well the issue here is I get proper signals for a while and when I lose connectivity or lost signal usually all mobiles re-register themselves over the network. In my case I have to either re start my phone or turn my aeroplane mode on and disable it again to get back my signals.
Have tried everything I could
1. Force reboot
2. enable data roaming
3. Manually selecting Network
4.Changed my SIM card( though havent tried another provider as telstra has very good coverage here)
Appreciate if anyone can help me here or sud it be a problem with handset then will proceed with replace ment
Thanks

I have the S4 on the UK "3" network and comparing the signal with that I enjoyed on the S3 it is unfortunately worse.
For example I have noticed that at least 20 % more of the time I get the dreaded circle with line through saying no service and it seems very slow to reconnect, although it does.
Of course when i do get a decent signal the data speed is way better and yet to experience 4g for a few months at least.
Hope that helps a bit

Atleast you get back your signals with out constantly having to monitor and re start ur phone. I have to restart my phone once I see the dreaded circle.
What version of Galaxy S4 are you using the 4G (i9505) or the 3G (i9500)?
If i9505, then is it the Australian version? or you import it, if you're using either the i9500 try setting up the appropriate APN from here.

Well its GT-I9500 model bought from kogan I am sure this must have been imported from Hong Kong. Will the APN still work?

Unfortunately even after adding the APN the signal issue not resolved. Lost my connectivity and still waiting for the signals to get back. Looks like have to restart it again. Though adding APN resolved my packet data issue

I have a similar issue
I've switched my phone to GSM only and its been working ever since.. Not Ideal but it may help trace the issue
I had a similar issue the other day when roaming in a different country in Europe. In my home network, I've never had that issue so far.
When roaming on a particular foreign network (Orange SK), the circle would show up and stay there until reboot (30+ mins), despite being in a very well-covered area (major city center). This has happened consistently over the course of 3 days. Manual selection of the network didn't help at that point, only reboot seems to cure the issue.
Not sure what the deal is, but it seems I'll have to keep an eye on the phone when roaming.
G.
I have completely same issue.
SGS4 with Lycamobile sim-card. Netherlands. GT-I9500 (imported)
Always in Roaming. And always loosing a signal as author mentioned.
I place another microsim - works all day OK. Put back my LycaMobile - the same.
I have an assumption the problem is because I crop sim-card into a micro-sim by myself (But in all phones this manually cropped sim does works).
Well I haven't found a solution yet, but I have ordered a new microsim from Lyca (already cropped). And today I gonna test it.
Will get back to you with the results
I Have this same issue, im in colombia with tigo as my provider the problem is that im in zones with good signal strength and suddenly i lose all off the signal ...have a i9500
This is starting to look like a widespread problem...
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
No, new lycamobile microsim has the same problem.
Do you guys think it can be fixed by samsung?
The second thing I noticed. That when my SGS4 loses signal, sometimes it couldn't found ANY network.
'Network mode' is disabled and pressing 'Network operators' - it displays: 'Searchig', then sometimes I can see list of operators, sometimes not.
If I see networks, I choose 'Lycamobile', signal got back with 100% signal, and then randomly looses again.
Ok noticing now it happens on certan spots of my house and wokplace.. in those spot i lose all signal and never get it back... have to restart havent tried turning off mobile data and then back on.
no root but flashed the cwm through odin.. the one that autoroots but havent roted yet...cause no triangle away yet..
I9500UBUAMDE is the firmware
Now I had the same issues sorta anyway on my i9505. But I've managed to improve the signal strength and stability by flashing a network specific modem. For instance I'm on Optus network so I've flashed the carrier modem

Naaah, flashing the carrier is really annoys, especially when my SGS4 loses signal randomly several times in hour
Btw, I've checked my Lycamobile-NL microsim at colleague's Samsung Galaxy Note II. We didn't have enough time to wait until signal will lost, but what we noticed immediately - signal in Roaming! So I have an assumption this is pair problem - samsung + lycamobile (in NL). But it is weird, cause lycamobile works perfectly on my old HTC DHD...
Nobody wants to solve an issue. Samsung tells - it's mobile operator related problem. Mobile operator said this it smartphone issue.
I've checked new microSIM on different SGS and SGNote's - the same problem.
It is good I can switch my mobile operator keeping my phone number. What I actually did. But sad that I should switch from Lyca ;\
In my case, I can say for sure it's a Galaxy S4 issue. I've used two separate SIMs on two separate networks (AT&T in the US & Chunghwa in Taiwan), and they both see "network disconnects randomly and comes back" issue.
Key point: These are the exact same SIMs I used in my S3 previously and never saw a single disconnect.
Same issue here, Galaxy S4 i9505, on UK Orange (EE), bought in May 2013. There is no signal in my office and after leaving I have to restart my phone to get the signal back.

Please help! AT&T/Harbor Mobile APN Settings on 950XL, no Internet/MMS

Hey Everyone,
So I've scoured the web and tried all the APN settings I can find to get my phone working on Harbor Mobile (uses AT&Ts network and sim card). My Lumia 950XL worked fine on AT&T (which is what I had last month when I got the 950XL) but now all I can do is make and receive phone calls with it on Harbor Mobile. I currently have it set up using AT&Ts recommendations:
Phone
APN: NXTGENPHONE
Sign in: None
IP Type: IPv4v6
Use APN for LTE is checked
MMS Settings
APN: NXTGENPHONE
Sign in: None
IP Type: IPv4v6
Proxy Server: proxy.mobile.att.net
Proxy Port: 80
MMSC (URL): http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
Maximum MMS Size (KB): 600
I'm losing my mind here, and could really use the help. I've contacted ATT and they said they 'provisioned' my device on my sim card but no change... I have full signal but it just says ATT 4G and neither MMS nor internet works. I've put the sim card into a firephone and my old Lumia 1020 it works fine, both MMS and LTE internet work on the fire and 1020.
I've also read on the internet that the phone will set up the sim settings automatically if I configure the phone with the sim in, but I tried that as well. full reset my phone with the sim in and nothing changed.
Thanks in advance, hope I can get this solved, I'm now 4 days out of my return window on the 950XL (not that I want to return it at all but I feel like this issue stems from it being unlocked, not ATT Branded)
