UK Nexus - Nexus One General

Hi quick question,
I just managed to sell my htc hd2 for £390 so am about to order my nexus one! (im in the UK) other UK buyers can you tell me how much its all coming to roughly, i understand its about £340 on the credit card from google then probably about another £60 from DHL once they invoice you?
Also I heard that if we're importing a nexus to uk rather than waiting another month or so to get uk version sim free (i guess from google.co.uk?) that the updates/rom etc will be the US versions and we may not get certain benefits/updates/default functionality etc that a UK/european bought nexus will get - what these are I don't know thou!anyone know?
What i was mainly concerned with was that I did hear this may effect gps/maps and sat nav for uk users and that we may not be able to use turn by turn in uk? This may not be true, its just something i remmber reading on another forum?
any thoughts would be appreciated
cheers

Well I believe the UK Nexus will have multi-touch.
I have my Nexus already running Google Nav as it works as per the old method for Hero/Dream.
It depends if you're planning on rooting it or not, if you are then you'll be putting a custom ROM on anyway, which will probably have multi-touch..etc (Cyan is already working on it).
Also the UK will more than likely have a T-mobile brading...etc.
Your Choice.
I have had my DHL bill as yet but it was a tad shy of £355 I think (depends on the exchange rate at the time).

yeah i think by all sounds rooting seems to be the way to go once peeps have had time to iron it out. havent had android phone before but like all i hear, i had the htc hd2 for about 4 hours before i was convinced winmo was a pile of ****! i think i may take the plunge and go for it -my GF keeps saying why dont i just get an Iphone! i think i need this phone to show her why!

If the euro Nexus does have multitouch there's nothing to stop Google updating those US phones sold to UK users - the hardware will be identical.

How do I test multi touch as I thought Eclair supports it out the box? I tried multi touch paint from market and it seems to work fine.

Use Dolphin Browser, this supports multitouch.
We KNOW the phones support it, its just Google couldn't release to US handsets for some reason to do with Apple and copyright??? not entirely sure.

The UK Nexus One ordered from google.com/phone (currently the only place to order the device) does not have multi touch support in the preinstalled apps. The device itself has support, the built in apps do not (ie the built in Gallery app does not zoom when you pinch) That's why installing multitouch supported apps from the Market work.
You will need to install a custom version of Maps for Google Maps Navigation to work outside the US. Keep in mind there are some limitations. Search for the thread in the Dream Android Development forum to read how to install and what the limitations are.

Exactly what I thought. I prefer the double tap

There is, afaik, no "UK Nexus" and "US Nexus".
They're the same.
If the preinstalled apps in the version sold to US citizens don't have multitouch, the ones sold to Brits won't either.
Same hardware and software, only if you're having it sent to UK, you get the option of getting an adapter for you charger separately.
It's explained on the official support page, which I'm not allowed to link to.

Be very careful about importing any phone into different regions. All kinds of problems can result, including NOT GETTING 3G COVERAGE! If things don't work for you, can you return the phone without trouble? That's a lot of money to spend on a phone that has problems!

The Neuxs One is a phone made for the whole world, so importing it will not result in problems with coverage as it supports the mostly used 3g bands around the world.
Also noone is importing the Nexus One to the UK since Google is specifically targetting UK residents and must of course provide customer service to them.
As for other countries which google is not really selling the phone to I don't know, but I assume that the warranty is world wide and you should not have trouble returning it.

It does obvious detect the network of the sim inserted, time and location of where you are automatically. Therefore updating the system and apps accordingly.

Really? How did it update these apps exactly? I had no 3g/edge/gprs or wifi when I set up. Are you suggesting that OTB there are multiple app versions? Are you saying that if you happend to be in the US and used a UK sim you'd get UK apps? I doubt that very very much, particularly as a SIM is not even required to setup.
SC

Let me break it down for you.
The phone has a inbuilt GPS. When you turn your phone on the very first time regardless of your sim being inserted or not. The phone will set itself up accordingly to where you are. During the first start up the phone takes longer if you didnt notice.

LOL I seriously doubt that happens either. If it did it would have taken a week for mine to start up. I work in what is essentially a giant Faraday cage. I just can't get a GPS signal inside.
So rather than you just making stuff up, can we stick to the facts?

ok you should stick to your idea of google having 4 boxes of nexus ones. they have one for US, UK, Singapore and HK.
They shipped you a UK one since your navigation doesnt work and it had amazon UK installed

I take it there's still no confirmation as to whether it will be available sim-free from an EU webstore when it is offered on Vodafone? In fact, unless things change, when it is subsidised by VF, it may be a case of signing up to a vodafone contract on google.com and still importing the handset. If there is some sort of google.co.uk offering, then presumably the price will reflect the VAT element.

i got one from ebay 470 free shipping..
Works fine so far, how do i get the maps working? whats the old hero method? Ive never had an hero lol

What a shame!

Yes it's a shame that the globalized Google decided to sell N1 in USA and GB only...available in the rest of Europe in the spring...
Really I can't understand why after cloning iPhone customization (and not only...) Google decided also to clone the commercial strategy of the earliest Iphone 2G...Soon Apple realized that there were more iphone in Europe than in USA LOL!!!
Now how to get one in Italy? Who want to buy one for me...

What about the activation button? Does anyone know if there is some kind of activation that binds the phone to the google account from where it is bought (or is this button only for the t-mobile phone)?
Is there anything else to consider before buying it (except the high price) from ebay and using it in Europe?

Thanx for your answer.
I checked ebay and it would cost about 250$ over the real price. Really too much.
no, it only binds it to your google checkout account, not your gmail account.
so you will be able to activate it where you are
It may suck but different markets get different phones at different times. I don't know how many times I have seen a really cool phone only to discover that it will never hit the shores here in the US. This time it worked out that we got the phone.
I guess it comes down to you win some you loose some.

Yes maybe you are right...but not considering a whole market like europe...like italy, where people go on purcheasing technology also in a bad economic period, would be an error!
Let me get one first. Then I can get into shipping out of country. I own an IT business and I have create multiple google accounts under that and perhaps get 5 for each account I make up. I want to make sure the phone can be activated etc before I start ordering phones that may not work later (screwing me and screwing others).

I'm also in Italy at the moment and I have mine on the way only I don't know if my method would work for you. I'm stationed in Sicily for the time being and I used a site called shipitapo.com. Not sure if this site would work for you but I'm willing to bet there is something similar. As for the purchasing part I just went to google checkout and setup my account so all the information was already in the system, including shipping address and credit card. Then I had my brother who is in the states log into my google account and purchase it for me. He just had to click a couple of links and because everything was already setup. Now its on the way. hopefully you can find something similar. Might be able to use a US proxy to be able to log into you google account and purchase it.
@SpiersA
good idea! I should need a brother, and in usa! About shipitapo.com, it's because Google won't ship it abroad?
Well, according to the iPhone wiki there are 6.4 million iPhones (of 33 million total) in the US alone. Considering Google is an American company, and the App Marketplace had first purchasing support in the US as well, it makes sense to distribute a handset with this much probably popularity in the areas that are easier to support first. Not to mention they partnered with T-Mobile US (an existing partner) for subsidized handset sales and will likely get a huge bump in volume just from that alone.
I have to agree with the earlier comment about how often I've seen really nice phones only to have them never show up in the US (or after they've already become quite out of date). It's nice having top-tier phones start in the US first and then move out from here. A truly global launch with so many new moving parts at once (new hardware, new version of the OS that might not be fully localized yet, thousands of market apps that still don't work with the DROID, etc) would be a total nightmare and make no sense at all.
And yesss...I found how to place an order from all over the world. Just placed mine from Italy. It has been easy...I will reveal it ad soon as I get shipping confirmation!

Buying a N1 for a UK user

Hey peeps,
Got some money to burn before the end of my tax year and have been keeping my eye on the phone market recently (boy has it been eventful with the passing of the MWC), and have decided i want a Nexus One.
Can i just get a few questions clear so i know it's defiantly the right choice (as i keep thinking i should wait for the *cough* iphone *cough* 4 *cough*):
1) Will the N1 get updates to Android first over other Android phones like the milestone and the Desire?
2) Will there be any issues with updates as i will be buying from the US for me in the UK?
3) If i have a problem with my N1 where do i go to get it fixed in the UK?
4) Is the N1 'always on'? (need to decide what data package to go for)
5) If i root the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates?
6) If i put the HTC Sense on the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates?
I can't think of any other major questions, but i am sure i will ask if i do
Paul
1) It will be faster than the milestone, but for the Desire we don't know yet. Anyway, it's not like features like this won't be ported the next day by the devs here
2) No problem.
3) Dunno, sorry
4) Well it can connected only on demand, but it's not how android is supposed to be used I guess.
5) Not so far, and at worse you'll have to wait (not long) for unofficial updates
6) You'll have to use the updates found here. The OS won't be 100% identical to the Desire, so no official updates will work. Applications updates from the market work us usual though.
Thanks Blimblim
with regards to No.4, i asked cus someone told me that the iphone is always on, so if it hasn't found a wifi network to connect to it uses GPRS or 3G which could get costly if i'm out and about
With No.6 I think i might leave it as stock if it may cause problems/inconveniences. (but i might change my mind when i get it )
3) It'll go to HTC UK who are based in Milton Keynes.
4) You can turn data on and off as you please with the 'Toggle Data' widget.
sir.chunk said:

3) If i have a problem with my N1 where do i go to get it fixed in the UK? Phone gets sent off to HTC in Milton Keynes
4) Is the N1 'always on'? (need to decide what data package to go for) Yes, although you can disable mobile data with APNDroid, which was fine for me till I sorted a dataplan
5) If i root the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates? Only if you load a custom ROM
6) If i put the HTC Sense on the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates? Yes, as it's a custom ROM, not that the devs wont include the updates themselves though.

I'm from uk and have an N1
1) Update was prompted to me the moment the wizard setup up wifi (by establishing my google accounts) upon startup
2) None so far. Be aware navigation will only work at present if you root your phone (iphone equivalent of jailbreaking). Google are working on a european version, i chose to wait. And then there is an intermittent sync error with Picasa web albums directly onto the phone, though you can still access the web version in your browser in seconds [EDIT - this will be resolved by updates according to Google forums]
3) A problem with software would be to contact Google. Hardware would require HTC's uk based team.
4) You can chose to not have data roaming, chose to not update any widgets should you wish. For your information i'm on O2 simplicity at £20 a month, 800 minutes, 1600 texts and unlimited internet and have had no problems. Advice if you'r unsure would be to buy the paid version of the Taskiller app, it can be selected to automatically close background apps and therefore stop unnecessary data.
5) Not rooted mine. Chose not to do mine as i'm new to Android it's still much more customizable than iphone and Winmo so i'm a happy user with current abilities. I will pursue rooting if Google do not update a sat nav app for uk in the next few months. There are plenty of youtube videos around to show you how with forum advice.
6) Again, there are plenty of youtube videos with the 2.1 Desire new Rom working on the N1 successfully. No visual performance issues fromt he ones i've seen and everything looks as it should.
Hope i've been of some help.
Regards
Scott
oooooo, this is all very exciting! Thanks everyone for the info.
Didn't know HTC had a centre in MK - WINNER!
I think i will leave putting HTC sense on for now. I did it with the X1 and liked it, but that's only cus what SE had to being with was about as much use as a chocolate tea pot! lol
Out of interest, what data plan have you gone for with vodafone UK?
I see they are now offering on their sim only plans a 1gb data plan.

If DHL try to shaft you for the duty charge, phone them up and demand it taken off your bill. UK customs state that mobile phones and PDAs have 0% duty fee. They put a 5% duty on mine, so I called them up. The lines are always busy, but as soon as I got through it was only a 2 mins affair. They have to recalculate the VAT and other charges so they'll send you a new updated bill in about a week or so.
Hey guys, what was the total cost in £'s if you don't mind me asking (phone, Duty?, VAT)?
Also, would you think when Vodafone release it in the UK, will it be different to the one from Google direct?

Yup, and at this point of time, only this telco has the tie-up with Samsung. Very similar when the Iphone is launched in SNG.
P/S: Our government doesn't encourage exclusive tie-ups on a permanent basis, which is why Iphone was later sold on the other 2 telcos as well.
P/P/S: I don't even know if this is the 16gb or the 8gb model, but then again it comes with 2 free gifts - 1 pair of "Super Junior" concert tickets and a table stand, whatever that is.
Super Junior is a all boy band from korea. I have seen people paying good money just to go to the concert.
I've checked the phone out yesterday. The screen is just awesome but i noticed that the Google Voice Search function is not available in the phone I've tested. There is no mic icon beside the google search box.
It would be a bummer if they have decided to not include the function. Anyone knows if the function has been omitted out in the retail set or that it is only on the set that I've tested on.
Strange, several of the reviews have commented how accurate the voice search was.

To add on, we have rules that doesn't allow SIM locks on phones, so it can be used with any operator. Expect to see many sets sold on the local market as all the girls ditch the sets because they're just interested in seeing Super Junior.
I'm not so sure about the tie-ups, phones like Milestone is still exclusive to SH after so long, as the Cliq and Backflip are exclusive to ST...of course, without sim locks, it really doesn't matter much unless u really want the telco subsidy.
It's the 16gb model. Brochures and launch party states it's only 16gb model sold in SG.

I think they have included it, because I have read that it is pretty accurate on this phone (somewhere...)*.
The new vlingo is pretty neat, though, and looks to be a lot more accurate than the standard Google voice stuff!
I quite like this guy's reviews: http://hemorrdroids.net/
He doesn't have too many, but he usually gives me the information I want to hear, and is concise (which I found a lot of the American review sites aren't!)
Anyway, his vlingo demo impressed me.

Thanks for the links. Yeah I've read the review on GSMarena before testing the phone. That was why I was surprised to not see the microphone icon beside the google search box. Anyway I believe some of the early birds will be receiving their phones tomorrow. Hopefully they can review the phone and maybe confirm any rumours.

The google voice search was'nt on my X10 but you should be able to download it from the Android Market "Google Search By Voice".

Buying a Xoom in the US as European

Hey everyone,
I'll be visiting the US next week and i'm considering to buy a wi-fi Xoom in the US. But i'm really doubting about it, since i'm living in Europe.
What are the differences between the US version and the European version of the Xoom. I know my warranty won't be valid in Europe, but i'm not planning to break it.
The Wifi Version shouldn't be at all different than the US one, other than maybe a different set of languages installed.
I have had a US xoom for a month now, no difference, just language as said above, there are only 3 I think. Works perfectly, and is £100 cheaper

I beleive the warranty is global. I bought my Xoom from US and after 5 days I lost touch control, Motorola replaced my Xoom without any problems.
I'm also in europe.
Definitely agree with Bloke, besides less language choices there are no differences. And I believe in another forum you asked whether the market would function and the answer to that is yes, no problems at all.
And as a bonus, I believe Google Books is not installed on the European version, but it is on the US model. After I rooted, titanium backup gave me the option to defrost that program, so mysteriously it now also works in Europe!
There will be one difference due to different regulatory domains the US Xoom Wifi won't have access to wireless channel 13 as far as I know that would be the only difference.

Generally its disabled at the driver level for a lot of devices. I'm not 100% sure on the Xoom but it is a possible difference.

Did exactly the same, £380 taxes paid at RadioShack. Correct about language choices, Eng, Esp & Fr. I already had a slip in plug to change the power supply adaptor to UK. Works as it should.
Same here. Us Xoom on danish ground.
Eng. System with danish keyboard.
No problems.

Bought a xoom from US, living in SWE. No problems as far a functionality. The warranty thing is a bit confusing though, I'm having a problem with my Xoom's USB and some technicians say it's under US warranty some of moto's technicians say it's fine and they will try and help me. Sooooo think about that

Where did you get the slip in plug, is that the bit that plugs into the us adapter?

Can't remember tbh, it was probably from an iGo travel adaptor. It just slips over the two US pins and neatly clips into place. Just looks like an OEM charger. I Googled but could not find the part. I don't know the proper name for it. Sorry I cannot help more.
I too live in Europe. Is it sensible to buy one from Amazon and ship it to me? It wayyy to expensive here almost 1000$

Same for me... I live in Czech Republic and my Rooted Xoom (from US) works fine. You have to buy some plug adapter because Xoom doesn't support charging via USB.
Got mine from the US and it works fine, you can download Google Books from the internet and it just works.

How did you go about this? I have a horrible ghosting problem with my screen and I could do with it being fixed. Cheers

I contacted Motorola UK, explained my situation and they offered to send me a replacement. They were slow in replying to my messages, but they resolved my problem. It took two weeks to ship the replacement from US to Estonia (EU).
About ghosting, I have seen it also on both devices, but only in the browser. Are you sure its a screen problem?
How did you get the Books app to work?
Should be no problem.i bought in us for singapore. Best advice is buy online as the sales tax isn't like VAT. There is no refund

And where do people buy it someone told me that amazon isn't all that cheap. Alternatives?

Could you please specify how exactly you've made Google Books work in Europe? I've got Titanium Backup but don't see an option of "defrosting" apps.
I've bought the US VerizonXoom 3g+WiFi upon my visiting the US and everything works here like a charm, apart from Google Books and Google Movies. I live in Ukraine, which is only geographically in Europe, not the EU member. The guys from a Ukrainian CDMA network office even managed to connect my Verizon US Xoom to their network, even though the shop assistant in the US kept telling me that the US Xoom is for Verizon only.

Google Play store -Nexus purchase

I'll keep this really short
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_7_8GB?id=nexus_7_8gb&hl=en
Im from India and clicking on the above link gives the error
"Sorry! Devices on Google Play is not available in your country yet.
We're working to bring devices to more countries as quickly as possible.
Please check back again soon."
As expected since im from India
The Nexus 4 has launched and will bew going on sale for $350 for the Unlocked 16GB version of the phone
What i intend on doing is order the phone off the Play Store for my Dad who is based in US so that he can then ship it to India
He is always busy at work so is there any work around on how i can make that link useable in India to the order it
Proxy maybe ?
Oh and payment for Device can be done without a Paypal ? As my dad should have a Credit card
Thanks for the help
I was thinking of using a Proxy, but is it safe for shopping ??
Oh and can someone please explain to me the means to order it, Credit card/google wallet/ payapal ?
I wouldn't order some anything with a credit card over a proxy, they're insecure.
Sorry, there really is no other way. Until and unless Google opens up the Play store and sells the Nexus in India, you cannot go through the checkout process from India. The billing and shipping address are required to be the same, in which case it needs to be based in the US.
Damn :/
Thing is i only need to do the browsing
AS iwill be using my dads credit card or any other means of payment
All i need to know is payment options
Thanks
Just have your dad set up teamviewer and send you his passcode ( 1 minute of less ).
Then when he is away from the pc for more than 5 minutes you can browse google play website and order using your dad pc through your pc with the help of teamviewer.
Ohk so you want your dad to send it to you.
What you can do is give him this link http://www.google.com/nexus/4/
and tell him to press "SHOP NOW"
hope that solved your problem
ill do the team view thing
Will a VISA Credit/ Debit card work ? Or do i need google wallet ?
Credit card must work.
Your are going to use a USA card.
The card's location of issue must be the same as the addressing location. Not sure how exactly it works or if there are any work arounds.
Use Google.com
The specs are amazing and i just love Android.Unfortunately for reasons unknown Google is not so keen on launching their Nexus phones in India . It was true for the Galaxy Nexus and i don't think that Google has any plans of launching this one in India. My brother who stays in US will be coming home for Christmas and i will ask him to get the 16 GB version which will cost just 18,500 INR (approx)...... that's almost the price i had paid to get my Motorola Defy a year ago .Are there any limitations of using this phone in India...i read somewhere that the phone will have a built in battery ? is that true ? If yes....is it possible to change the battery if i have any issues with the existing one or once the stock battery dies out.
Regardless of area availability, you linked to a discontinued product . They aren't selling the 8GB version anywhere anymore

We will not know until someone gets their hands on the phone and does a tear down of it.

You are totally wrong. LG has an official statement released that they will be very much launching a NX4 in India. Heck even Google said it is coming to 200 countries. So no way they have missed India.
I too am from India and am desperately waiting for it to show up on the Play Store.
It will only be available from Google in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Spain and Australia.
All other places will have to buy it through local retailers/phone providers, where it will probably be significantly more expensive.
