HD2 Shall I Get????? - HD2 General

Afternoon all
I have been reading all the reviews about this amazing phone but have a small concern, I can upgrade/swap provider next month shall i get the HD2 or will someting better come out in say 3-5 months and do you think WM7 will come to the HD2??

No matter what you get, something better will always come along in a few months time. If you worry about that you'll never end up getting anything I'm afraid. I just got the HD2 yesterday on SIM free, having come from the iphone 3G. Have to say, overall I'm impressed with the HD2, probably not quite as polished as the iphone, but you can do a lot more with it. Think of it more in terms of a small laptop rather than a phone.
I've never had a windows mobile before, and I must admit it's taking some time to get my head around it and get things set up, but am getting there now I think. Certainly one of the hardest phones I used in terms of getting it set up right, but then there are so many features and settings. It'll be worth it in the end I'm sure. PLus the guys on here have been a HUGE help. Certainly the best and most useful phone and gadget forum I've been on. There's an answer for just about everything on here.

just buy it, its the best phone experiance i've ever had!

fully agree on this as well
HD2 does have some bugs but I've never seen a phone / device without bugs. Update to WM 7 has neither been approvid nor declined officially but fact is that from hardware specification is should be able to deal with WM 7.
You need to commit at some point - as usual along the whole life - so either you go for HD2 or you can wait for the next 3 - 5 month and get then your favourite device which will probabely be better than HD2 to some extent but be ensured that only some months after your purchasing you will be facing new devices better than the one you've got.
Cheers,
LEE
p.s after having this great peace of hardware/software for one month, I would go for that today again....

It's a great phone, there's nothing out there yet that I would swap this phone for.

Not strictly true. I contacted HTC directly who assured me that there will be a free update for windows mobile 7 on the HD2 when it is released. However, they did say that Windows mobile 7 will not be released until towards the end of 2010. Knowing how these things get delayed it'll be more likely early 2011 then

Thanks for all the quick answers my mind is made up will get one when my contract is up and moving to o2 UK
Just one more thing i have a diamond and the battery life if very bad if the HD2 any better i hope so cos can only use it as a mp3 player for about 3hrs then battery is dead

Buy or not to buy!?

Hello people
IMO Blackstone is the best device ever and right now the best device on market I have held it and played a bit with friend's device and it rulez. Far better than iPhone (I have iPod Touch and I know what it is all about OMG - although as a MP3 Player it is the best around). And I really want to buy one.
But it is little expensive in my country so here is the question.
Remember what apple did? Lot of people bought iPhone and right after that new iPhone was released.
I am really afraid that if I will buy Blackstone (I want to buy it in february) and there will be something better right after that or maybe there will be newer WM systems on these devices or etc.
Are there chances that this can happen? That eg I will buy Blackstone with WM 6.1 and really shortly there will be new blackstone with WM 6.5 or something else making it even better?
What do you think??
Thank you.
I don't think WM 6.5 is coming anytime soon. Perhaps at the end of the year.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/21/first-windows-mobile-6-5-devices-due-in-third-quarter-of-09/
If you can wait, I'd say wait a month. Microsoft will give more details at the Mobile World Congress next month.

That's Apple for you though, the only company to not given a flying **** about the customer.
They limit you in every single way possible to use a dumb downed device that is only for dumb people.
Go for the HD, you will love it.
I think three to four months from now there might be other devices that you might want to test drive then, like the Palm Pre, the next iPhone, Touch HD-variants with better graphics processing. Some will be presented indeed at the next Mobile World Congress, but then again, it will take time for these new devices to reach your market.
Upgrading your HD operating system to 6.5 should be no problem, I would not worry about that. At some point you will have to make your hardware decision, and always face the risk that three months later there will be a device even more desireable. I think none of us need a HD to survive, but its nice to have.
In my view for the next three months there will be no device better than the HD commercially available.
I guess in the next three months we may have announcements (official) from HTC on new devices for 2009. But, these will not be in the shops until June/July.
I would say "go for it" now. There is always a possibility that another killer device will be appearing so if you wait for new ones now why not wait again in summer for the Windows 6.7 (!!) devices ...
We're in a post-Christmas, credit-crunched lull at the moment. Much better "next gen" devices based around better processors etc are just around the corner - I'd steer very clear of the HD, it's a dead end.
Thanks guys
I guess I will buy it. If you say there will be no problems updating to newer OS and other stuff.
Yep, I don't dislike iPhone, but Iphone is not what I want.
Blackstone, w8 for me, I am coming

Just a warning: there is no guarantee that a ROM upgrade will be made available. HTC have not promised this.
All you can say now is that the HD may be flashed with a new ROM. The supply of that ROM depends on HTC and the excellent enthusiasts here in XDA (there are lots of alternate ROMs available already for the HD).
I personally use a standard ROM and I'm happy with it.
3GSM
Maybe, we could just wait the 3GSM in Barcelona in mid February to know more about next WinMo releases. Even if MS release it on Feb, the first devices will not appear before this summer, (if it's the same way as for WM6.1).
HTC will maybe provide us with a new ROM as for some of WM6.0 devices (the elf update was only available for a short period). And if they don't, I'm sure the ROM cookers from the Blackstone ROM forum will do
My main concern about the HD is battery life,I had the Diamond and it was so bad I bought a Nokia for the first time in my life, nice machines that last 4 hours on a single charge are not mobiles.

I am happy with the HD battery. It easily lasts a day of FULL use (BT for calls, GPS infrequent use and 1 hour of podcast listening).
But, I have no need for long-play videos. I suspect this is a weak spot for the battery.

HD2 pricing now that we know there is no upgrade to 7

Do you think prices for the phone will start falling? The phone is essentially a dead end unless the wizards of xda cook something up.
I cannot stand this blabbering about "HD2 as a dead phone". There is NO WP7S to come within the next at least 6 months... AND WP6.5.x seems to go on. HD2 is still THE phone that you have to buy today if you want by far the best Win-Phone. The prices won't suffer some kind of inflation too soon... It hasn't been launched in the US at all and it stays the HTC-flagship until HD3 will be launched in the end of this year.
Well the price for the phone through mobile service providers is already low... I got mine for 79€ and another 24 months commitment.
I don't really see why they'd bring the price down any lower... They never claimed it would be upgradable to WP7 so why should they feel obliged to lower the price?
Am I the only one who wants to wait and see what WP7 turns out like before even considering using it? I think it looks interesting but I'm far from sure that it will be able to meet my needs as well as the HD2 and WM6.5 does.
US phones
It essentially is a dead end product. We don't know if xda's cooks will be able to get 7 going on it. I'd like to buy a phone that will last me a couple of years. The Australian version that works with AT&T here in the US, is still very expensive for us. Almost $1,000. Too much money for me. I can't imagine switching over to t-mobile though.
Price will come down anyways. It will take some times but you can get them with some carriers for cheaper as other posters have mentioned.
I don't see any relationship between the price and actually the phone not being upgradable to WP7.
It is still too early to see anything.
IF there is a "WP7-related" price fall at some point, it won't be before WP7 devices are actually selling. You've got time ahead.
Are all the people who keep repeating HD2 is 'dead-end', 'outdated', 'old', 'no wp7 upgrade' looking to buy up some cheap HD2s on ebay?
it is a dead end NOW, cause developers are ALREADY abandoning wm6.5.x
like adobe, skype and a lot more.

why on earth you say such bulls**ts?
Dead end my a$$! There are people all over the world working with their HTC Touch Diamond and WM6.5 with the help of xda's chefs!
You got the most powerfull device on the market and you already say that is dead while WM6.5 was released no more than 6 months ago? Dear friend you're totally OUT! You better buy an Iphone and work with a closed minded, kid oriented operated system istead of the best OS and phone on the market.
The HD2 is the BEST phone on the market today, no questions and I think it will not be reached very soon. Fast, smooth and good looking.
With help of the chefs, this device will last very long.

yeah...if we are able to port/cook wm7 on our phones, that would be great..if not..then i guess ALL the WM6.5 phones and below are dead end..
I mean before this, newly release winmo still support backward compatibility. In fact my old age dopod 838 pro with WM 5.0 can still run current apps without prob.
damn u MS for making Wp7s backward incompatible, and no multitask (hope it will have multitask, waiting for mix10)

Is there an official statement of any of that from MS themselves? Or are you just jumping on the bandwagon and spouting "what I 'eard of't internet"

Is it worth holding onto the HD2?

Currently I own the Tmobile HD2.
I love it and think that it's a great device.
Still a lot is making me wonder if it's worth holding on to with WM7 coming out and Android OS out.
So many people reply to this by saying:
"XDA developers are going to port Android and WM7 to it"
Still, I can't help but feel that there are SO MANY developers out there giving reason why it can't happen, won't happen, will never happen. I hate to see that the machine that is up to par with the Nexus one has no chance of being updated OFFICIALLY AND UNOFFICIALLY. So what's the point of holding on to it? Why keep this device when more than likely within this year it will be pretty much void to any further programs for Windows Mobile 7. Can people here explain why would it be worth holding on to?
Beacause mine is on contract, haha.
I was tempted to go for HTC Desire. But considering I spend quite a big sum for this phone, I supposed I should hold on to it a little longer, at least untill end of this year.
Another thing is, while it does contain great hardware, no one is optimizing their programs for it. TCPMP is a great all around player that does not take advantage of the HD2 hardware.
my advice would be...if you like or love the phone keep it...a phone is special in its own ways...android/wm7 may or may not come...but something else could come out...and if you love the phone ,the interface shouldnt bother you...
there are many ppl who are trading their nexus one for the hd2 cuz you cant put wm in nexus...all phones are not perfect

If you like the phone for what it is NOW, keep it. If you only have the phone for what you hope it will do in the future, get rid of it now while it's still worth a lot. There will be plenty of devices coming out that will be as good or better for every other OS out there, so go with what OS you want. I personally want a WinMo device, and the HD2 could quite possibly be one of the last great WinMo 6.5 devices made, so I'm quite happy owning it. I don't care if they port android or WP7 to it. It would be great to play with them, but WinMo is my OS for now.

I had my Desire for a whole day before taking it back and returning to my hd2.. The android os was fantastic but the phones hardware was poor. I.e chassis and screen.. (not the snapdragon) I couldn't live with the screen issues where it makes things that should be grey, pink....
Going to stick with the hd2 for a while now.. If not my original one as I have just chopped it in for a new one. I really look after my devices but now i can compare my original one (received on release) with my new one I have noticed the buttons have really lost there "click" they feel very spongy after 6 months..
Really hoping we seen android on the hd2 soon!
I am keeping mine 100% ... I have been using Android, Symbian and now HD2 and gotta say (recently installed SPB Mobile Shell 3.5.3) and must admit - it is a hardware beast. I am interested to see this phone running dual boot WMN and Android - until then I will play with SPB Mobile Shell... Oh yeah - almost forgot... in next couple of years I'll sel it back home (European country) for bunch of euros and get another good phone of that time lol...
i would like to see webos on the hd2. i bought an hd2 telstra because i can run the apps that i have on my sony x1a and for its larger screen but the hd2 is a humungus beast. i like the form factor of the palm pre plus and may pick one up when it comes out on at&t. i do think wm is kind of a dying breed... especially if wm7 programs will not be backwards compatible.
Impulse
I woke up yesterday morning. Surf to look for a new present for myself (which falls today) and contemplating on Nexus One, iPhone or Milestone (Droid). Saw an advert on Touch HD. Looked at Touch HD2. Contacted the guy selling at 8am and bought it at 10am. Now my HD2 is 1 day old w me.
So far? Its much better than iPhone in terms of smoothness of transition and app (love snapdragon) and image quality. (my bro had the iphone so i compared) Could use a bigger batt. (have been using HP 910c and that has the big battery option at 1940mAh)
My personal opinion. Love it. Its nice.

Should we be thinking of ways to get rid of it?

-No win7 support , although even though our hardware if far supperior to the win 7 devices currently
-horrific support (HTC has to be nobel price winning at sucky support)
-battery life is amazingly bad..some members here report success with alternative chinese batterie types, but come on we paid our bottoms off for the thing we shouldnt have to bleed our eyes out on 3rd party web merchant pages
-its being discussed that we are not even going to get 6.5.3 or 6.5.5 upgrades even though omnia II and toshiba models will(or have dunno)
-millions of buggs that shouldnt be there in the first place
-lack of supported apps
-overpriced marketplace
Such a mixed feeling..I truly and deeply love the device i hold in my palm as i write this..but its like i am holding the hand of a relative in a hospital dieing..is truly HTC gonna give away the future of such a brilliant phone?have we payed 50% more of the value of the competitor's phone(iphone) price and go nowhere (while they get their free os 4 upgrade) ? i feel so decieved..i even got to thinking ways i could cheat for my warranty to get my money back..
-edit : forgot the 250ms sound delay woe issue (one of the reasons we bought this cursed phone was to watch movies in its perfect screen dammit)
You got what you paid for, the hardware is already surpassed by the Evo 4G, in a few months time it will be even farther behind, such is the way of tech. WP7 was never promised, only speculated so that is not a valid argument.
Your other reasons are otherwise sound to varying extents, but at the end of the day this is still a fantastic device, so no, I dont think anyone who bought the device and is happy should be looking for ways to get rid of it. If you dont like it, return it or sell it but it works very well for a large number of us.
So that the fact that they do not even care enough to upgrade it to something as idioticaly as simple as 6.5.3 version (hich like 40 roms in here have) doesnt make u feel they are throwing the phone support (that made me laugh) away?
And no, i do not get what i paid for..i paid nearly 800$ for this..no not even marginaly close to it.

No, I agree totally with your view of HTC support, I actually think they are the worst phone manufacturer among WM OEM's, contrary to what everyone else thinks because they like the eye-candy of Sense, which I think is utter bug-ridden rubbish.
HTC has the HD Mini out now, you would think they would be releasing 6.5.3 updates for all their phones, especially the HD2, but this is typical HTC, once a device is released the normal support life cycle is 6 months, then we are left to our own devices while they work on the next device. In the current climate, HTC is apparently focusing entirely on their android phones, so we WM users are left to look on and lament our lack of updates.
As for getting what you paid for, I guess we will have to disagree, I never expected HTC to provide an update to 6.5.3, knowing their past history and considering they never announced it. I knew I could only count on the OS they shipped the device with, and anything above that would likely come from Xda.
You have a great device there, the hardware is top notch and capable of outstanding performance, just dont look to HTC for any kind of realistic support. Xda is your friend and will give better support and performance enhancements than HTC ever has.

You seem to be stuck in a mindset which goes against that of technological advancements over the last, say, 50 years.
The computer you buy tomorrow was out of date last week, that surround sound system you've got, that's been surpassed several times since you bought it.
You do realise that the iPhone OS upgrade was to insert features that most phone companies have been producing lines of phones with for almost a decade?
Cut and Paste for instance, was first used (in a computer sense) in a Xerox environment in the 1960s, Apple's iPhone was announced in 2007. It didn't support it until an OS upgrade. The first Windows PocketPCs in the mid/late nineties had it as standard.
The iPhone's hardware is 50% of the capacity of the HD2, maybe you did get what you paid for?

The HD2 is far from dead.... there will be people making roms and writing apps for it for years still. It's gonna be known as the last great WinMobile phone. It will remain as the best WinMobile 6.5 device, and for that fact, I think it will last longer than most phones do.
There are still people supporting phones from 5 years ago on these forums.
What is it that you signed up for? Nothing was promised for this phone other than what came with it. HTCs customer service sucks, but they make some great devices, and with them we get XDA support here! Thats much better than the support any other oem gives, imo.

this was a comment because imho past devices were not as promising as the imminent are..nevertheless my problem is that i the services that came with my purchase feel like being molested..absolutely no future in it from the developer's end..i really dont know if its that typical of HTC to manage in that manner, and if it is is till do not know why this company still exist.
Got what I wanted!
I researched for months, got what I wanted, & what they said it had! Runs smooth, no bugs,"except audio booster" Would not trade for wm7, don't like how it will hold you down. I also pd alot for mine!! But I'm still sooooo happy. Love it. Sounds like you need to trade every month to try to keep up? Quig

Issues mentioned in forums are negatively biased. People with problems are more likely to come here and post their problems as opposed to the many people who are not having problems.
Secondly, if you want to troll, do it on MySpace. April 2010 join date, seriously? If you don't like your phone, sell it and be done with it. Stop whining because you didn't have the common sense to read the labels on what exactly HTC is selling in the HD2. HTC is a phone manufacturer. Ergo, their job is to keep selling phones, even if it means phasing out past models. If you do not agree with this business strategy, go with another company that suits your needs.
How many 1000's are in use?
You have to realize how many of the hd2's are in use! I wish someone would count the number of people on these forums that are having problems, since they come here to get fixes. Not too many people go to forums, if everything is working ok. We have over 7000 members on htchd2forum.com the % is pretty clear, most are great!! Think about it,"if your car runs ok, do you go to dealer & tell them? If it is giving you trouble ,you call, complain, go in, get it fixed? HUH? wierd concept!! Sorry, got going,, I like this phone better than anything I've ever had!! But that is"me" not "you"! Goodluck,,Quig

I GUESS I really didnt know the HTC way of thinking...apple and android seem to get it a lot different..although they state 6.x phone support is not halted it indeed is..no upgrades,no updates,no nothing...i guess i should start flashing or im stuck with the ton of problems bundled in my handheld
I dont see the point in making these kind of thread. What will u get from these?
If u have problem, then try to search and solve it.
If u dont like the phone, then try to sell it.
Is it easier to feel better than making these threads and have most of people tell that u wrong here?
As far as I see, most of people who complain about their devices are people who just joined in to ask and complain. They messed up with their phone then try to get people to help them fix it. This phone is just amazing and works out of the box.
Let's compare the ones that have problems with the ones that dont, who only focus on flashing and trying roms. Maybe at a rate of 100 and 10000?
Hey guys!
I think chris2busy actaully does like the phone, but he is probably just really fustrated with the lack of support. I mean, usually, wouldnt it make sense that if you had issues with a certain product you have purchased from a certain company, then u should get all the support from them(Mostly). But for me, this forum is my support.
Also, I too agree with the point that why on earth, after paying so much money, do we have to rely on third party apps to tackle issues that shouldnt really be there in the first place? I mean, why doesnt it just simply work right out of the box? Dont get me wrong, i love customising my phone, but these customisations should really be for "customising" our phones with what suites us & looks good in our eyes....not to fix issues that HTC/WinMo shouldve done. I still love my HD2 but these are just some things we ALL couldve done without......
Finally, No, we shouldnt be thinking of getting rid of this phone as its "Kick Ass!"
(watched the movie last night, so still in that mood!)
I do not like this moaning and groaning, It has been posted recently that it takes time to know your new device. If you're not willing to spend that time, then stop harrassing us/this forum with your "complaints". By the way: what's the point of your post anyway?

Would you get new HD2 if yours is broken?

let's say your HD2 fell in water, or fell on the floor, or for some reason was suddenly not operating and cannot be fixed, and you have to buy another unit.
will you get yourself a new HD2 now that you really know the device? or buy another phone?

Hard to say if i get another HD2 as there are many other phones out there with the same spec as an HD2. But if there were not id buy an HD2 in a moment as its a great phone, great screen, excellent call quality, active rom creating community for upgraded / custom roms .. Yeah it is a great device and id give it some thought if id have to purchase a new one ..

Probably id get a DroidX when it arrives. It has a similar spec and screen size as the HD2 and looks very nice .. Id be able to surf the web no probs on that device which is the primary reason i bought the HD2, so for me any device that has a large screen for web surfing and allows me to make a call once in a while would do me fine .. Hey would the 5" Dell Streak be too big for the pocket, hmm id give that one some thought too
Nope, I love my Leo but I'd get an Android device and will be doing so when I can upgrade next January. I'd like to stick with a 4.3" screen though so therefore I'd like an Evo. But HTC have decided not to sell them in the UK so it would have to be a Desire.
I love my leo too, buti'll buy a droidX if I have to change quicker.
I like it, but prefer android based OS.
So if I could get as big a screen with TMOUSA, then I would change.
I'll wait for HD3
no, I will never buy such device.
Why? read my posts, there and then on this forum, including compete list of what's very wrong with it.
In short:
-poor support
-poor amount of updates, actually over because HTC discontinued the device
-official rom suck and is buggy
-HTC's philosophy to attack the one making roms
-Stupid design (sound, power button on the front, etc...)
Etc...
Also, I look competition and I see new Motorolla X, and I'm tempted to say: wow.
I heard feedback from people with droid and they did not have to wait custom roms to say "it works"...
If I broke my leo, I'd get a HD4, cause I hear its going to have a flux capacitor and be capable of generating the 1.21 gigawatts needed to power it.
Well, I ran into such a situation. My HD2 was not recognizing any sim card 50% of the time. And when it did, it only lasted for a short while. After trying all non invasive fixes, I decided to "operate" on it, taking it down to the screen. Still couldnt get it right. So I bought another one. I think it is a great phone for what I use it for. And, now I have a parts phone!
interesting question
Currently happned to me something similar. Phone has fallen out of my pocket on the ground, it was only 50-60cm, but screen is broken like if someone throw it against a bricked wall.
It will cost me at least 150EUR, bad luck. They do not repair only glass because is stick together with display and removing can break it.
I saw it at some thread ,that this is more problem of the hole around hw keys at the bottom. So basicly the design of the front panel, when phone is falling at bottom side.
But if it will be destroyed completely, I am not sure, but probably I will buy something else:
- phone itself is almost 9 months old, there are or shortly will be better phones
- there are still bugs after almost a year, and if they are solved they are not available for customers, for example official region version differencies
- is good that somewhere at forum is ROM which helps with battery consumption in standby mode, but you are not able to use it, basicly you are forced to break waranty otherwise you will be keep on usatisfied with device and forced to wait for official version for your region and wait and etc.
I like this device, but I am not blind to see weak points of the device or company policy, so it is almost 50-50 but time is ticking and competition will bring us better phones soon, I am optimist
If that happened tomorrow, Id get a HTC Desire.
If it happened just before the Nokia E5 is released, Id go buy a cheapo phone to tide me over till E5's release.
HD2s are really cheap now on ebay, and I have a pretty fair library built up already so chances are good I'd pick up another one. Although it's equally likely I'd get a big Dell Streak. I mean have you seen the thing? Its keyboard has a numeric keypad!!!
If I absolutely needed a phone immediately, it would be a toss up between another HD2 or iPhone 4. Android on the HD2 seems closer every day so having that option would be nice - but I've got WinMo exactly how I like it and I don't mind it at all. Further, lets face it, the 4.3" screen size is just spoiling. I wouldn't switch for an Evo, and the DroidX is just TOO big.
If I could wait a few months, I'd look for a HD3 / other WP7 device... or an iPhone 4.

Ditto, Desire all the way. I am looking into Android a little more lately, I most probably won't, but I am trying to persuade myself to buy one.
I might get a Desire not because i don't like my HD2 but because i always have an itch to try something else.
Having said that it would be a close call i am due an upgrade on one of my contracts and was looking yesterday on the vodafone site, jeepers have you seen the prices on the Iphone 4's, flipping eck even if i wanted one i wouldn't get one, thats one expensive phone...
And having had a look around i've decided to stay with my HD2 for a while until something else comes out...
"I might get a Desire not because i don't like my HD2 but because i always have an itch to try something else."
I know what you mean. I spent a year or so with my WM Tytn II - loved it then kind of got irritated by it's clunkiness ... had a Hero with Android for a year - loved it then kind of got bored and wanted a change ... ended up losing it and taking the HD2 as a replacement.
Android has some great integration, especially for social networking, but IMO it's not a great OS for business and things like emailing/file management. WM appears to be lacking in the former (although the HD2 is better because of HTC's work) but stronger in the latter.
For those reasons, I'd like to stick with the HD2 and see what my upgrade options are - iPhone 4 is an obvious option for me, but it's not often seen as the greatest tool for business etc.
Android is the future
I know that hurts, especially all of us that have HD2(Windows mobile), but Android based devices are future. So probably if I broke my phone(I hope not), I will buy EVO or Desire. But I want to point out, i will never buy iPhone 4.

Well, after reading all the previous posts, I was almost convinced to change to Droids, but reading your post, and the fact that you had TYTNII like i did, and you tried Droid for a year, i am sure you have a good point that droids are goo for social networking (showing off) and WM is good for business, and business is what i need.
but reading other posts and looking at my past 4 years experience in HTC, i am more than convinced that HTC company sucks, so i will try to find a better WM device from another company, but i am not sure if there is any
