I went back to stock so I can take my phone in for warranty issues. Now when I hold the home button and power button to boot into the recovery menu, I get a Picture of a phone and a triangle with a "!" in it. I cant remember if I could boot into recovery mode when my phone was stock. When I rooted it I flashed a new recovery image on to it (recovery heroc-RA-v1.2.3.img.) Do I have to re-root and flash the stock recovery image back on then unroot. (If so does some have a link to that file). Also I thought the RUU would take care of it, there is a recovery.img file in the folder I extracted to.
your going to have to reroot and flash the recovery image again. Check the stickys for a recovery image.
Check out the Pre-Kitchen on the front page for a quick way to root. Then reflash as the guy above says.

Thanks for you answer that is what I needed to know. So when a Sprint tech looks at it, they wont know that I rooted the phone. Currently I am running the stock Sprint 1.56 RUU

Unless hes not so bright like the rep I had. He argued with me about it. brought it to the manager who just put the stock software on and bring it back... It's kinda like taking in your minivan into Ford for warranty work, and then they discover that you have an aftermarket turbo on it. Or take in your modified 360 for warranty work for Microsoft. These devices have been modified from their original state to work in ways other than the original manufacture intended. Just flash back before you go in to cover your butt.
At my store, most reps have no idea what you would even be talking about if. All my techs know what to look for though, and will refuse work on any system running anything other than the Sprint ROM.

lolz...I think you meant to use the word "hippocrite" instead of "Hippocratic" since that pertains to the Hippocratic Oath; It is something that new doctors say, purportedly written by Hippocrates (and hence the name), promising to practice medicine in an ethical manner with respect for every person and life so as to 'do no harm'. is the stock recovery image available?
Last time I unrooted my phone with ruu 1.29, it automatically restored it. It is very simple, without all the amon ra features. I have never tried with the new ruu 1.56 release. But I know it was there with 1.29, I have seen it. You get the triangle and exclamation point whenyou have no recovery. That happened to me when I botched the amon ra install. Did you Google Sprint recovery image cdma hero?

I've got cyanogen's optimized 1.5r2v3.4, and Recovery Image v1.2. I have read half a dozen threads on how to get your phone back to stock, including this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491350, but I have a unique impediment.
The screen on my fiance's brand new phone completely stopped working after less than a week. I can only interact with the phone via adb connected to the recovery shell, so I have to be absolutely sure it goes perfectly the first time (since the odds of having a working recovery shell after a bad flash are slim). I have not changed the second splash screen, so by what I read, all I need to flash back are the SPL, then the DREAIMG.nbh, correct?
How do I do update.zip for flashing the SPL via the recovery console? I had no problems getting the phone from stock to rooted, followed the instructions step by step. But now that I have to try and figure out how to do EVERYTHING via adb ONLY, I read the most simple instructions and find myself going 'wait, what?', trying to figure out how that would work done entirely without being able to see feedback on the phone screen.
Use the DREAIMG.nbh and recovery.img for rc29 stock its in the rooting thread.......load up the phone in fastboot (camera and power button) the phone will recognize the files and tell u to hit a button....you hit that whopping one button and wait 2 minutes and you'll be back to stock rc29 where then you can reroot or just sit around waiting for Over the air updates from t-mobile to catch u up to cupcake.....honestly i don't use fastboot EVER but i always keep those two files on my sdcard so if i have a problem i just run it and blast back to rc29 and start over......hope u see this before its closed in 5 seconds for not using the SEARCH BUTTON
sorry just use just reread ur post...use the DREAIMG.nbh it has the old SPL built into it
i'm not sure how this would be done, but what iwould suggest is put the original SPL on the SD card as update.zip and the DREAIMG.nbh on the sd in the root of the sdcard, then reboot holding home, give teh phone 5 minutes to boot into recovery then press alt+S wait 10 or more minutes to let it flash and then press home and back to reboot, or in adb shell type reboot bootloader, give it a minute or so and then press power, wait 30 minutes and hit the trackball, if after hitting the trackball the phone vibrates then it went fine, if not then the .nbh didn't flash

Can I ask why you are bothering? Are you afraid they will hit you with an out-of-warranty fee because it's rooted? They won't, I've returned a first gen G1 that had the issue of the screens ribbon cable coming unplugged (sounds like your problem) and T-Mobile sent us a new one no problem.

Yeah, actually. *shrug* it doesn't seem to have flashed back to the stock image anyway, so I guess it'll have to go back in whatever form it's in. Hopefully you're right and they don't care about custom images.

And besides, whether or not your phone is rooted isn't in the check-list of questions a CSR is supposed to ask before accepting a return, so how could it be your fault?
Actually they asked me repeatedly if i botched rooting my phone, i kept asking what that meant and they moved on after the third or fourth time they asked(which i found odd since the demo phone in my t-mo store is rooted and running dude 1.2). as long as it doesn't have a custom splash screen it should be ok.
also you could always grap the OTA update and edit it in some way(resize a pic and put it back) and then resign with testkeys and rename update.zip then the only thing they'll see if they really look at the phone is a bootloader that's been changed and recovery, but the rest will look like their stuff.

yeah well, i have had enough experience rooting and un-rooting to the point that i decided that when my replacement arrived i rooted it with my eyes closed, i had all the needed files on my sd card and comp so i used adb install and memorized the steps. only took an hour to do. the thing i hate when i am on the phone with them is when they ask me to reboot/pull battery/wipe when i tell them i tried all that and then i called.

When you talk to those people you have to sound as newbish as possible, that's probably why they kept asking if you rooted it.
trust me i sound like a freaking idiot. "they told me on the t-mobile forums to press the homekey and turn the phone on and i got a triangle with an exclamatioin point, and then i pressed alt+w and after a few seconds my phone rebooted but the screen is always sideways when i open apps." i act like an idiot and they replace it. the only problem i had was when the guy asked what my favorite thing about the phone is, right after i told him i didn't know what root was. i just said games cause that's all i could come up with

I think I may have bricked my nexus one. It is completely my fault for attempting things that I knew little about, so flame away But after the flaming, if anyone is willing to help I would be sooooo thankfull...

All was well, I even got the modaco desire rom up and running, and was happily switching back and forth using the recovery screen. I had nand backups for specific setups, etc.
Then I decided it would be good to know how to go back to stock, and found this page:

I followed the instructions to the letter (I think) except for erasing userdata (it said "failed: remote not allowed"). I thought that things would be ok, since I'd recently wiped, so I followed the page till the end.
The phone rebooted, and I got the original nexus boot animation - but it's in an endless loop! What's worse, it that now when I try to go to the bootloader or recovery mode, I get the exclamation triangle with the little android.
Is there any way through a command prompt (or other method) that I can fix this? I tried to re-flash the RA recovery image through the command prompt, but the response was, "waiting for device."
ANYTHING that anyone can suggest to help, I would be so thankful! I've been loving the nexus, and hate to think that I crippled it

I doubt its bricked.
Noticed you didnt mention that fast boot doesnt work? (power button+trackball) try it.
Once you get to fastboot you can flash any ROM back. (fastboot flash **** commands from a command shell)
Did you ever perform a Nand Backup from Recovery?
It's not bricked, the only way to brick is to interrupt power when flashing a Radio image
Connect phone to PC. Open command prompt.
adb reboot recovery
Wipe, reflash.
So far, nobody has managed to brick a Nexus. There is no way as the fastboot mode can restore the whole phone and can't be messed with. Make sure you have the latest version of the SDK with correct USB drivers and fastboot. Then try and reflash the recovery image.

The only way that I knew to get into bootloader/recovery was via power button/volume down, but power/trackball brought up the bootloader screen, and I clicked on fastboot. I was able to flash the RA recover image through the command terminal via fastboot, then able to get into recovery. I had cyan and modaco sense on the sd, and was able to flash one of them on.
I never thought I'd be so happy to see "quietly brilliant"!!! I WILL buy you a beer, a case in fact as soon as money clears my paypal account.
I have learned my lesson, research research research. (I did do some, but not enough to feel comfortable with what I was doing - hence my cry for help!)
Other than the phone and OS itself, the thing I like most about the nexus is the fact that one CAN root, and then customize (sold a Telus moto droid because I could not do that very thing).
I digress... thanks again so much!

I think i got the same problem. i tried to Unlock Bootloader and Root Google Nexus One which was successful but then i tried to superboot it and when it came to the part where you "double click the ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’ file" i clicked it but it did not go to the nnext screen where the superboot completes it just stayed at the "bootloader screen". i must hve not done something or done something wrong i dont know.
So then i unplugged the phone from the pc and rebooted it. when it reeboted i wasnt getting any network, the phone was slow and the notification bar would not slide down...also i noticed the phone restarting on itself...
/i tried all kinds of "restore to factory settings" but not solved. Can anyone tell me what to do tht will work. I coud not understand what was said in the above thread as i am new to this android n my first time rooting n stuff n i believe that solution would work for me too..if some one could please explain in simple tirms the steps i need to take would be good...

Tell me what i need to download again and how to go about it...i really need my phone working again ((((
I just tried flashing the Gingerbreadime.zip and followed the directions to the letter and I experienced my first soft brick. The phone went into a boot loop at the mytouch screen. Luckily I was able to go into Recovery and restored the backup I had made after rooting and turning s=off. It appears to have restored okay as I still have root etc. Does anyone have any idea how or why this happened ? This zip was posted in Droid-Life and was advertised as good for all android 2.2 devices. I have never used adb but have it set up on my phone so I guess I had better get more familiar with it. I have flashed my Vibrant numerous times using Odin and Rom manager but I don't believe that there is a similar program for the Mt4g (Odin that is) I guess I have been spoiled by my Vibrant as it seems to have more options to recover with and are easier to use from what I can tell. I do love this MT4g though It is probably the best all around phone I have ever owned. Any and all info and help is greatly appreciated.:

There are people experiencing the same thing in the Nexus forum. Personally I would stay away from anything that is not specifically built for this phone as its a completely different OS than Vanilla or Moto Droid or etc. etc.

I sure intend to and I should have got on this forum before I even attempted to flash it. Right now everything seems fine except I cannot get into recovery only clockworkimode recovery. I am holding down the volume down button and pressing the power button at the same time and the device just reboots. Any ideas and what could be causing that? I am embarassed to say that my ignorance that pushed me to flash that zip is probably at the root of it. Any steps that I can take to enable me to get into stock recovery to check and make sure S=off?
Edit: Just pulled battery and sim card and than put them back in and the device went into stock recovery and s=off so I hope that all is okay and I did not create some ghosts that will show up when I attempt to flash a rom later on.

I did the same thing. I flashed the .zip file from droid life forum and got a success message when I installed it through recovery and mine never bootlooped. I didn't get the gingerbread keyboard but it didn't bootloop either

I think you mean bootloader? You only have 1 recovery. If you flashed clockwork you no longer have stock recovery. Vol Down + Pwr gets you to bootloader or SPL where it shows S=off.
I did not flash the zip (sounds like an overkill to flash a zip for new KB). I ADB pushed both files and got a FC on multi-touch KB... oh well, I like HTC_IME better anyway

make sure fastboot is checked off otherwise you cant get into the bootloader. to make sure it is off go to: menu, settings, applications and uncheck fastboot. you're good to go then. to get into recovery, you can do it thru bootloader or by opening up rom manager and clicking on the "reboot to recovery" option

the website was not specific enough. the port at the current moment is for motorola droid devices. they should have been more specific instead of saying any rooted 2.2 android phone. even if you do get it on your phone, its only going to force close every time you try and type something. thats what happened to me, so after about 24 hours i said **** it and removed it. swype in my opinion is better anyway. im trying to port the g2 swype to our phone so we can have a swype with a mic on the keyboard. oddly, ours didnt come with one.

I like to think I am rather educated in regards to how to root and all that. I just got my replacement Evo today and of course it is updated to 2.3.3. So I can't use unrevoked, but I was hoping to flash over to a older backup I made on 2.2 on my old phone.
Except, when I do the whole hold the volume down + power button and eventually choose recover, all that happens is a image of a phone and a exclamation point appears and it never leaves here.
I know in order for me to be able to use ClockwordMod I need to root the phone, which can't happen on 2.3
So what are my options? How do I flash over my old rom???? Even if it doesnt let me get back to 2.2 its still better than redownloading all my apps.

Well, you have a couple problems here.....if I am not mistaken, your first problem seems to be that your recovery may either be corrupt or not installed. I saw this issue back in my TP2 days. Not with the evo though. If this is a replacement EVO and you cannot properly get to your recovery, then I would suggest contacting sprint on this issue. It should at least go into the stock recovery. As for your rooting issue...you can't do anything untill root is provided for the update.....best of luck to you!

If I member right once in stock recovery you push vol up + power button to get the menu up.

9.then go into adb and type fastboot oem lock
By this time you shouldve completely returned your phone to stock.
Unrooting is not needed to receive OTA updates or anything. The whole phone works just as before when rooted, except you can give select applications system access.
I had my phone rooted before it broke, and I received all the updates on schedule.

I don't know if I can post the link, but you can search for the Cescomn Nexus Tool (google it). It's an automatic tool that does everything for you (unlock bootloader, get root, get stock again etc) just by pressing a button

The Nexus series is a developer phone, that's why it includes UI features not found in the normal series, such as displaying UI refreshes, touches, etc. Warranties, or at the very least, T-Mobile HU warranty, takes this into account, and covers damages even if the bootloader is unlocked, the phone rooted, and CyanogenMod installed in place of the regular OS.
There's no reason to unroot the phone for servicing.

So if I somehow break my phone and the warranty can help me it doesn't really matter if it's rooted, with bootloader unlocked etc.. ?

I can't speak for any other provider, but I'd think that's the case.
To be sure, I'd take it to a Samsung official repair shop, not back to the provider. They didn't complain about the modifications, but the first thing they do is slap back a 2.3.6 on it.

I'll phone all the Samsung official repair shop in my city and then I'll give a feedback. I hope you're right, I always had the fear to break something at hw level so..Thanks for your answers.

Since you're flashing an entire ROM, that doesn't matter as long as you can get into recovery (ICS made some changes there, you'll need the new fastboot binary).
But like it's been said, it's not necessary...

Thanks for the info. As far as i knew you had to deliver it back as stock. I was just putting what i thought was useful info on the board!

I'm sorry about my bad english: I'm from Italy, you know..Is that post so difficult to read and understand?
Never once did I think about reverting to stock ROM... Third party ROM's are hella powerful.

3.Install it through recovery (CWM)
4.Restart system
5.Reboot phone into bootloader
6. Hit recovery and once you get the lil droidy and the !, Push Vol up + Power until you get blue menu
7. Go to wipe data/fact reset
8.Reboot to bootloader
9.then go into adb and type fastboot oem lock
By this time you shouldve completely returned your phone to stock.

sorry for seeming thick but there are some bits I dont understand.
does rom download on sd card need to still be a zip file?
3. install through recovery CWM ? I assume you mean clockworkmods. I don't know how to do this?
9. Go into adb? Having trouble getting this to work.
I'll play around a bit and try again.
