Sense UI? - Nexus One General

I'm nervously awaiting the delivery of my N1. I'm using EnergyROM with Sense 2.5 on a Fuze and love it! While the N1 is an impressive piece of hardware, I'm not very impressed with the UI. Will it be able to run Sense on it? Or is there already a ROM that I can use?

If they can get Sence UI running on the G1/MT3G then there is no reason to think that they would not be able to get it on the N1. Besides what these devs are capable of is astounding to say the least.

Is there anyone else out there who can't wait to root this phone and get Sense off of it?

I went from liking it, to hating it, now I'm back to liking it agian, but that's just me.
Simple solution, disable it, if you can't disable it, get a homescreen replacement from the market. As for the other apps like the keyboards and messenger apps and stuff there's alternatives for those as well.
Other than modifying or adding internal background stuff (editing the kernel or low level services) I don't see any reason why you really need root anymore. At least not for my needs anyway.
I am a big fan of AOSP but that seems like it's the only advantage in my eyes to having root nowadays, everything else can be done with crafty market apps.
Talk to me agian after the next upgrade to android is all the rage, you will see me with my foot in my mouth for sure =P
I can see myself turning off many of the gizmos and widgets in that Sense thing. Too much junk running.

I take it that you haven't played with the hero or anything like that?
go to a sprint store and try it out, finding ways to disable it is much easier than trying to add it in if you want it. Those that don't have it pre-installed want it, those that do have it want it gone.
The problem most people hated it was because it slowed down the hero, it runs at half the speed and half the ram approximately of the evo, it really shouldn't be a problem and it's just eye candy, and the benefits of having it outweigh the problem of it being on there by default. It's mainly just a grass is greener thing mostly.
The widgets can be easily removed from the home screen by a simple one time hold+drag.
I'm not the only one in these parts with an HD2, but I assure you WinMo 6.5(x) runs sense fast and smooth. If Android is as fast as I believe, sense will not be a deal breaker....or as previously stated, just turn it off.
No idea what you hate about it. What do you all think is running in the background that you're all so concerned about? The widgets? It's not like stock Android doesn't have them either.

I love Sense UI ...
I like it. It makes SENSE
I love how some quantify something they haven't experienced on the actual phone itself yet.
It's like saying I hate playing a 3D game that runs on a 2D graphics card with a slow experience and lag. WELL DUH!
I have the new sense ui on my nexus one and its 10x faster then wm version.

I'm with you on this... I too have an HD2 and it runs Sence as smooth as silk.
My Brother has the Desire and it too with Sence slides along very nicely.
I'm not saying I hate sense UI because when i've used it it ran slow or because i couldn't figure it out. I don't like it because of how it's layed out, the configuration of it does not fit me. If I can change it or disable it, I will be a happy person.
Personally I couldn't care less. Sense or no Sense. I think it looks nice and all but I'm a hacker bred from the Cyanogen camp. I love speed and Sense just slows things down. I am sure on a 1Ghz device with 512MB RAM it should run without any lag. I'm still an AOSP fan however and hope we don't run into the kernel issues with this device as we are with the Hero. On the Hero we are still running .27 or .29 for those who want the canmera. I feel ancient!
I have the hero with Android 2.1 ROM
It has weaker hardware.. less memory.. slower CPU
I have sense and live wallpaper running at the same time
It is perfect.. smooth... fast.. beautiful.. everything works.
I can not imagine the evo having any issues with sense or any software!
I love sense and all it gives me

But stock 1.5 isn't exactly smooth, even the 2.1 isn't quite buttery smooth, the custom roms are, but I don't think with that much power behind it that it will be a problem, and just think what will happen when xda gets their hands on it

hope the whole camp jump's on this one i prefer aosp over senseless anyday of the week i install the widgets i want on my device don't need htc or sprint's bloated ****gets taking up valuable memory space
The reason sense slows things down is because they have been stuffing it on two year old devices with barely an acceptable amount of storage and ram. The new devices from the evo and incredible don't see these issues because the extra ten megs is nothing where on the regular hero makes a big difference as you start opening up more and more ****.
It will be a non issue on the evo. If you prefer asop all the more power to you I also like it but the largest complaints against sense are going to be obsolete soon enough now that devices actually have more horse power and memory.
i looooovvvee sense ui..had it on my g1, htc magic, hero, nexus one, and soon to be evo 4g
AOSP
Lets hope one of the first custom roms is for AOSP. I am running an AOSP build on my hero and I LOVE it!
I'm looking forward to it. I love it on my buddies hero. Just makes android that much better.

Custom ROMs - - Sense or AOSP? What's your poison?

Firstly let me just as I give a MASSIVE congratulations to the guys in #g2root for all their hard work in achieving permanent root. I'm not going to lie, I thought Christmas time was an achievable target when it came to breaking the eMMC lockdown on the G2 and DHD but to do it in early November? (applause)
Anyway, my Black Ops addiction forces me to keep this short and sweet, as time is of the essence and I must earn some COD Points before work!
My question is, when we start seeing custom ROMs, will you be sticking with Sense or moving to an AOSP ROM? I'm interested in your reasons and also wondering whether there are any users who were fans of AOSP (Stock Android) and have been converted by the new and improved HTC Sense 'experience'?
Things to consider are speed, functionality, looks etc.
I'll weigh in with my opinion later on.
Please don't start flaming each other and turn this into some kind of epic fight between the OS and it's illegitimate shell UI of a child!
They both have pro's and con's.
Regards.
I much prefer stock android. Sense is nice, but i just don't really like the look of the dock (even though you can change it). Stock android with the transparent dock at the bottom, and all fancy animations for opening/closing apps, keyboard sliding up etc just looks awesome!
Also gingerbread im sure will probably have more eye candy, but again HTC might cut these from their roms. So i'll be sticking with stock. Cyanogen maybe..
No I couldnt get to grips with sense it looks really flash, but maybe it's because i came from the Magic that the system overhead of running all the ui effects worries me, so I have disabled it all and am waiting on Cyanogen
What counts more?
To me its not the UI that counts but the android version, in other words if i had a choice of CM 6.1 or my current sense rom id go for sense. Don't get me wrong CM is amazing but both being 2.2 id rather take the extra functionality, looks and ease of use of the new Sense roms than an AOSP build. However if i had the choice of CM 7.0 (ie gingerbread) or sticking with sense 2.2 i would move over to AOSP without a second thought!
After coming from the Hero and the amazing FroydVillain 1.5. I cannot wait for Hacre to start cooking ROMs for the DHD. So my choice is firmly in the AOSP camp.
Unless a custom rom offers something i dont have ill stick with sense. I like it graphically and much prefer htcs widgets.
Only phone ive loaded custom roms on before was my htc hero but that was because it fixed a message notification problem.
So far ive no issues with my DHD so see no reason at the moment for a custom rom.

Im fully aware of the benefits of CM but being mostly a business user the utility i gain from sense is far greater than on AOSP, however the geek in me just cannot live with not having the latest and greatest OS. Simple as that.
Given the choice of a same version Sense UI and a CM ROM I'd likely stick with the Sense UI version. There is a lot more integration than normal flavour ROMs offer and it's one of the reasons HTC have been praised. Small touches like basic Facebore and Twatter integration without needing an app specific to them is nice, as it the browsing of Facebork photo albums as if they're on your device.

It depends on what you call real functionality. As I just said above I love the extra touches that Sense UI has such as the Facebork photo albums, cross-account linking with updates from social networks in their contact profile on your phone and for me the best implementation of copy and paste outside of iOS. It's basic things, not massively important but those touches are missing from stock Android.

me too, i completely agree
I'm really torn between HTC Sense & AOSP. There are positive things for both, as this phone was supplied with android 2.1 and HTC Sense. So for me my first introduction to android was via the Sense UI so once I had rooted the phone and applied s-off I was keen to see what was difference for the user interface (ease of use) and to compare the battery life etc. I'm currently using cyanogen nightly builds, and I'm most impressed with its performance, I do miss some of the HTC widgets, but I get by! now for me my comparison between the two is like comparing kde vs gnome!
Currently my preference is with AOSP, but only by a slim margin as to some degree Sense is (for first time use) easier, but is quite taxing on CPU...
so there's my 2 cents worth!

AOSP !!!
I dont use any Sense widgets. I prefer the speed in a Senseless ROM
I prefer Sense ROM most of the time.. i will try to play around with AOSP once in a while but when a higher version of android is out but still no official sense rom is out yet, AOSP is a must.. this applies to Gingerbread and higher xD
How about that sense browser with the translate feature on long press, can't get that anywhere but sense, and LPP has similar widgets

I'll be sticking with Sense, at least for a while anyway (until I get bored!).
It's nice to have something that just works. Coming from WM6.5 it's such a breath of fresh air to just have a phone that does what it's supposed to when you want it to.
I have a Kaiser flashed with CM6 and a Rhodium with AOSP if I ever want to play with that, but right now I just want a seamless environment, and Sense seems to provide that for me quite nicely.
Sense without any doubt!! The only setting I would choose AOSP is if Gingerbread comes out before an official Htc rom with Sense, as said by many. That would be the only scenario I would choose that, and then decide what to do if/when Htc comes to the upper Android version too. I really feel good with Sense, love it!
I'llstick to the first Sense rom "without all the Sense crap" I will see. Why?
The sense phone dialer is unbeatable, so useful! I don't need the clock, Fancy widget takes care of this. I don't need the news and weather stuff and all Sense crap, but because of the dialer, the contacts management AND the music interaface, it's worth having. In the Desire Android development thread, there was 1 rom like this, but I stuck with a AOSP rom because it was better. This sense rom was ok, but still, too many crap in it. The AOSP was ok, but with an update almost everyday, I could merely keep up. So I gave up and sold my Desire. Now I'm back again on the Android scene, let's see what it brings.
BIG THANKS AND RESPECT TO THE G2 TEAM WHO MADE A DESIRE COME TRUE!!!

CM/Stock Android vs Sense

When I started using Android on my HD2, I hated stock android builds and was huge fan of Sense Builds.
However after using it all (Stock Desire, Desire HD ROMS) and trying out stock Android builds...i've started to like stock android/CM much more...
Even though HTC has done a great job and sense has the best out of the box experience, but with few additional softwares, widgets Launcher Pro and Dialer2...stock android is just as functional as sense and feels much more smoother/faster too...Animations also seems much more elegant..
What you guys think?
Also I don't know what CM7 gives over stock Gingerbread, stock builds are just as much functional and feels more light too?
my 1st try on android was shubcraft, very simple but later its annoy me of launcher pro unintend 'widget resize' reminder to get full purchase. Then, Iv try the Nexus base which has bland milky white menubar which make me boring. So I skip to Desire and Evo base rom. I think Im liking to use more because Sense is is very usefull with instant result widget like, message and people widgets, so handy without necessary open main program
But once getting to Desire HD, its like full of colors while other build stay sorta black and white. But I do like to MIUI and Gingerbread too, better than before

Sheep Mentality

No offence intended by the title of this thread, but I've noticed that all of the latest rom releases are all pimpin out sense 3.
To be honest, I find the lack of current development on sense 2 roms disappointing. Im currently using the last version of Leedroid 3.3.3 and occasionally switch to ARHD 5.2.6 as these were the last x2 sense roms which I enjoy.
I realise that sense 3 is the latest from HTC but in my opinion its bloated and sluggish with annoying 3d scrolling and a lack of scrollable wallpaper.
So my question is this... why the mass exodus to sense 3? Does anyone else feel the same as me?
Honestly, sense is pretty useless for me. Laggy, a resources hog and huge performance loss.
CM7 rules.
I also find this very disturbing/slightly annoying. However since I'm not a dev I'm still grateful for the wide variety of ROMs available.
That being said I found the stock Sense ROM to be awesomely quick but in my "the grass is greener on the other side moment" I removed it and put on some others... I'm now on CM7 and waiting for ICS AOSP for the DHD.
I guess it's just because everyone tends to build on the newest base available. Once some Gingerbread RUUs leaked everyone started building with them, and it wasn't long before the remaining Froyo builds stopped being actively updated. Same thing has happened now with Sense 3 - test builds have leaked and people have moved on, and if/when an official update comes out you'll struggle to find any actively maintained ROMs using earlier versions. The same thing will happen with Sense 3.5, then Ice Cream Sandwich, then who knows.
You can't fight progress.
Well...
At first I thought the sense 3 ROMs were pretty laggy in rosie, but with the super smooth and liquid smooth patches, and all the work done by others, I feel that they're now as smooth as they were always meant to be =)
Apart from that, if you want super silky smooth over nice transparent looks and still be very functional, I'd suggest MIUI with a nice theme. I went to the SCI MIUI ROM a while back and it's amazing, although for a change now and then I do go back to a sense ROM for a week or so and I'd recommend looking at the liquid patch.
Sense for nice looks, along with whatever patches our amazing devs come up with for speed and functionality.
MIUI with custom launcher for a fantastic compromise between AOSP speed and looks, along with that fantastic pull down and battery (and did I mention the speed?) (Also, I think I might be bias towards this)
Cyanogenmod for pure speed and battery
But anyways, that wasn't the point =/
Sense 3 with the patches is as smooth as sense 2 was, and most things like the 3d and bloated-ness can be got rid of or are the same as sense 2 =) Plus you can activate the scrollable wallpaper in some of them
Edit: Sorry that is a rant and a half.

The current sense 3/3.5 ROMs are indeed super smooth. I would get bored in a day every time I flashed a new Sense ROM, but what brought me back to Sense is the new RCMix3d Runny v3.2. Once you use Sense 3.5, its difficult to go back to even Sense 3, so I'd been waiting for this to stabilize a bit. And I must say, the RC team has made this ROM buttery smooth. Its perfect so far. Falling in love with Sense again.

The main reason alot of developers are going with the new sense is that they know all future updates will include it and the old coding for the older sense will no longer work when making and configuring roms.

ARHD 5.2.6 is my all-time favourite ROM. It's stable, smooth, fast and has amazing battery life not to mention it works with PureBlackEspresso skin (was never updated for Sense 3.0).
However, seeing all the new bells and whistles which are included in Sense 3.5 I tried Runny v1.5 when that was the latest release. Whilst I was impressed with how it looked and the cool extras like RCTweaks and Beats Audio (I've since decided SRS is better), it just didn't impress me with performance or battery life so I went back to ARHD 5.2.6.
Anyway, last night I decided to give Runny another try and flashed v3.3. All I can say is WOW! What a difference now... it's actually runs as nice as it looks. So fast and smooth, and appears to be very stable too. It's too early to comment on battery life but so far it seems acceptable.
My only gripe with Sense 3.5 is that you loose scrolling wallpaper in favour of the 3D Rosie. I do prefer scrolling wallpaper, but hey... you can't have everything and it's a small price to pay for all the other cool stuff you gain.
I still have ARHD 5.2.6 as my main Nandroid though... it will be a cold day in hell before I get rid of that!
From my last comment...i was talking ****e,now running runny 3.3 honey sense hd on board and nexus boot with customized uot kitchen bits. Uv scripted. Sweet

HTC says Sense is bloated

Has anyone seen this ? http://gizmodo.com/5889560/htc-sense-ui-was-bloated-and-cluttered
I take this as a big, Big, BIG chance towards a fully functioning, and most importantly - SMOOTH Sense One V port for our precious Desire Z which we all love.
What do you think? Do you expect awesomistic difference in performance compared to Sense 3.5 or do you think the difference will be minor, if at all?
I for one am very optimistic regarding this!
Huh that's interesting, good post!
yeah, i saw this before coming here, was going to post the same thing, lol. I agree with OP, i think this should make for a very nice and smooth port!! Looking forward to it
So, we should have a smooth one s port right? Since its debloated and runs with hardware acceleration, it should be smoother then sense 3.5
I think probably anything could be smoother and more usable than Sense 3.* on our devices xD. Sure, the UI transitions and animations and scrolling might be smooth, but no matter which Sense ROM you choose, there will always be a great deficit in app performance in comparison to AOSP, CM or MIUI ROMs.
Either way though, i'm still hoping that we can get a smooth One V port *fingers crossed*
As HTC said, Sense 4.0 is more about „personalizing” the devices, not about removing everything AOSP and redrawing it Sense-style.
I love HTC's new simple market strategy. From hardware to software. It really does justice to their motto - „Quietly Brilliant”!

Sense 4.0 on DZ
I really doubt Sense 4.0 will run smoothly on our DZ. Even when i used many sense 3.5 roms on my DZ it starts lagging after some amount of time. Used SDcard swap, supercharger and all the tweaks but was never satisfied with the performance. But as per reviews HTC has really toned down Sense with ICS so lets hope for the best.
Well, I believe theoretically it is possible and I hope soon HTC will prove us again that it is possible even practically.
cant wait
What would be nice is if they would nix all remnants of that sense crap. It doesn't add anything, it was 100% pure pain in the ass. Death by fire is what sense deserves, and everyone who promoted it, worked on it, or was in any way involved in the decision making regarding it, should be included.

Don't be so harsh. I for one get why some of you love AOSP, but seriously, until ICS, AOSP sucked UI-wise. Although 4.0 solved many of the look problems, Sense still adds some cool functionality such as the configurable shortcut lockscreen, a cool music player, and the overall HTC feel that I personally love way more than AOSP or Miui or any other interface.
And believe me, I have tried practically each and every single ROM that I could get my hands onto, and I found myself going back to Sense, in any of it's incarnations ( 2.1, 3.0, 3.5) each and every time.
True, Sense 3.x feels bloated, but HTC said that they are basically going back to v2 with Sense 4.0, so I am looking forward to the new interface.

Seriously. With custom ROMs, you can get what you want, whether it be Sense, AOSP, or something else. And plenty of people like Sense. No need to get your panties all in a tangle, if you don't.
