Backlight Adjustment sliders(manual) are GONE? - HD2 General

Hi folks.. i'm a longtime reader here but i never needed to post.. everything was provided( Thanks for that BTW). But now, i own a Leo myself and came across a problem i didn't find answered( or even asked) yet.
My backlight adjustmen sliders ( Settings->sound&Display.->Backlight) have dissaperead. You know the ones, one is for On battery power and the other On external power. Well, they are just GONE, and it just says "Bright" in each category. I installed a bunch of tweaks, and probably one of them is the culprint, but have no ideea which one and i'm not up for a hard reset/take'em one by one just yet, after spending 4 days tweaking it to my liking.
So maybe someone knows the answer to this..
My setup:
Rom: 1.48
installed:
all 4 hotfixes, Bsb Tweaks, Duttys task manager, resco explorere and reg edit, LEd notification enabler, grzegorz B4all+20 shortcuts, .net 3.5, touch x longpress sendkey Alttab, touch x powerbutton actionscreen, touch x remove topcurtain, touch x speedup landscape album, smaberg 1% batt, touchx power management on, g-alarm, Ms reader, WMlonglife, Skyfire, JWMD Icon changer, SPB backup, Heartwolf lockscreen fix v4, tccm settings( no ideea what this one is really, it was preinstalled), and also htc IME_EastEurope( also preinstalled, also no ideea what it is).
I didn't notice the sliders gone until yesterday, and by then all this was installed.. So any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Edit: POSSIBLE FIX BY MattOG:

For a quick fix, (not sure if it'll last, though it survived a soft-reset, so that's promising)
Goto HKCU -> ControlPanel -> BackLight:
Change ACBrightness to 10
Change Brightness to 10
(Can be anything other than 0)
(These work on power of 10's, so 1=10%, 2=20%, etc)
Now the sliders are back and you can adjust manually. Still not sure what changed them in the first place though.

so, apparently i am the only one with this problem? still haven't found the cause..

Well I have the hotfixes, bsb tweaks, duttys task manager and .net 3.5 installed and no problem for me, so you can scratch those off the possible problem causer list. You seem to have a few power management apps on there which may be taking this into their own hands - try removing them first and see if it comes back?

I have the same thing,
Off your list, the things we have in common installed:
4 hotfixes, bsbtweaks, resco file explorer, resco reg edit, 20 shortcuts, .net 3.5, smaberg 1% battery, g-alarm.
I've always had mine on auto, until I wanted to look at improving battery life today...

Oh, hello everyone by the way, this is my first post!

i somehow reverseed the condition myself, and came here to post, only to find MattOG allready found a fix.
What i did was, following ftr2k8's suggestion, unistalled touchx powermanagement on, also disabled power management from BsB tweaks, then softreset, then reapply power management from BSB tweaks. I did not check immediatly after that, did a few other things, like add pinch to zoom to IGO with BSB, install flashlight, fingerkeyboard, clear ram, and played around with them.. did a few softresets..
when i checked, the sliders were back. I suspect powermanagement was responsible.
No way to test MattOG's fix, but i think it's a more reliable way to try then mine
Thanks guys, cheers!

I have just had the same problem on mine
(I adjust brightness settings everynight as i watch tv eps in bed)
and the only things I had done were
update to 1.66 firmware
re-install
resco explorer, photo manager, live, opera 10 beta, skyfire, office mobile, opnmarket.
I've had all of these on before the flash so not sure why it happened.
I've done the reg fix and that's brought them back

Slow, slow, sloooow

Hello,
I believe many of you are (or have been) having similar problems - I wonder if there's a solution for this?
The problem I have is that when the device comes back from sleep (that is, when I open it after not using it for a while) the screen lights up immediately, but the device is extremely unresponsive. Trying to click the Start menu (or anything else on the screen for that matter) will appear to do nothing at first - then when the device finally comes to its senses (10-30 seconds later) my clicks are "played back" at lightning speed. From then on the device is usable, but this delay is infuriating.
I have ROM 1.13.53 WWE (from Sep-23) with radio 1.03.01. My notifications database is small (15 entries) and I'm not running a lot of apps (I have PocketPlus installed).
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a solution?
TIA
Are you using any Themes? Try switching back to the standard wm5 theme. My m5000 gets very glacier-like as soon as I try any other theme.
Try this.
Thanks for the replies!
I'm using the default theme. As for this Uni-Turbo thing, what does it do? Just so I know before I install it?
it will speed u your processor, after istall u will find the changing botton on Start/Settings/System/Power/Processor it works but using more power.
Im using this, it works Great ... i think its free, but
It essentially places a control panel file in \Windows which 'replaces' the power control panel item. The replacement is from another device, which has a Turbo Mode. So this gives you the ability to activate the turbo mode on your Universal. I've tried it - its safe to use and removing it returns things back to normal.
Try it and see if anything improves. I can guarantee though, that you'll see far more improvement by hard resetting (use Sprite Backup's free beta to backup emails, contacts, messages, etc).

If you have some Today plugins installed on your device it might slow down the response after turning it on.
For example:
I've got the Resco Explorer installed with it's Today plugin, and my device comes back with the plugin displayed in 15 seconds after opening it.
But when I turn off displaying Resco Today plugin it comes back immediately, after opening... (0,5 secs)
HoPe
My Uni works very well, but then I use it for next to nothing, but I keep memory clean with VJOkButt and stay away from memory resident stuff.
Although not exactly for this question, installing the extended rom dialler had a dramatic impact on speed on mine. If you don't need the pretty buttons, I highly recommend the stock MS Dialler.

Start button slowdown on first use
On the issue where the start button doesn't seem to do anything for a while after a suspend or soft reset:
The reason is that an application is listed in the Start Menu which resides on the SD card. What happens is that the Start menu tries to load the icon of the application from the SD card, which first has to wake up, causing the slowdown.
Same thing happens when you're browsing through the Programs folders (Start -> Programs), and there is a pause while loading the application shortcuts.
It's quite annoying, and I think it may be related to one or other registry hack.
Use SmallMenu!

is there any way to uninstall the extended rom dialer? it's neither listed in the list of installed programs (in SKTools) nor in \Windows\AppMgr :/

BeyondTheTech has an interesting article somewhere on Skype with this issue.
I just use SmallMenu, the normal StartMenu is useless to me.
Uninstalling the extended rom - i don't think so. You can probably manually delete the files it installs, but it'd be incredibly tedious and perhaps inaccurate/unstable. Best is to hard reset and setup again, but that's also tedious.

So how come then I have the same thing when browsing anything for the first time after the soft reset even when I have NOTHING installed on the SD card?

If you are using SPB Pocket Plus or any other similar software and allowing the SD card indicator on your today screen just remove it and you will realize the difference.
Also avoid to use any battery indicator on today screen as it will slow the device as well.
My last advice to you if you are using SPB Pocket plus is to un-install it and use any other similar program like Resco today plugins.... this will also speed up your device becuase the available version of SPB pocket plus is not completely compatible with WM5.
Regards,
I am using SPB PP (beta release) and its fast, but I didnt have a real problem with the earlier releases. I also use SPB diary and SPB Weather, and still no real problem, slightly sluggish but not intolerable.
My device wakes up perfectly immediately every time, and rings at the beginning of the second ring.
1. Remove SD card and battery monitors
2. Disable some of the additional SPB plug ins that you dont need like safe mode boot, PIE plug ins, battery monitor etc
3. Remove the antivirus software
4. Disable error reporting
5. Disable auto receive beams
6. Try disabling SPB altogether and see if it is still sluggish and unresponsive
7. Dont have anything on SPB or other that is immediately directed to the SD card as the SD card takes longer to recognise on wake up
8. Consider not switching the device off. I never turn it off, at all, wind down screen brightness, disable auto off, but auto off the screen only, close the clam shell switches off the screen but doesnt switch off the machine. the screen sucks the battery, not the processor.
Let me know if you have had any luck with this.
Perhaps you could also:
1. Ensure you have the latest rom from the website
2. Dont allow the extended rom to install (hard reset, and press reset when it says customising device), then use total commander to go to the extended rom and selectively install the items you need, this forum is full of information for this.

I just tried it and I have to admit I already like smallmenu. One question please: How do I customize smallmenu?
It seems to me it is locked at the following list:
Today
Programs
Favorites
Commonly Used Programs
Settings
Suspend
SmallMenu
I reset my device before any of the crap from Ext.Rom could install. I now have a speeeeeedy device. Oh, i am using an i-mate Jasjar btw.

I disagree, try to power off the device every time you close the clam and power it on when you open it and you will see how much the battery life will improve. It really makes the difference, I just can't be bothered and am too lazy to do it  I charge it every night anyway.

Curious behaviour after hard reset

Hallo community,
my Ameo showed some problems since yesterday:
The Screen brightness when running on battery couldn't be adjusted anymore. It stayed always to lowest level.
Soft reset didn't work, had to perform a hard reset therfore.
Now there occured some curious things:
When choosing "Einstellungen (settings) - System - Beleuchtung (Illumination ?) - Helligkeit (Brightness ?)" I can only adjust "Energiesparmodus (Energy saving modus ?)". Until hard reset I had had two settings "Battery" and another for a connected modus.
Another thing:
When choosing "Einstellungen (settings) - Persönlich (personal ?) - Menüs(menues ?)" there are some menu items twice. It is "web'n'walk", "Nachrichten" and "Tray Display". "Web'n'walk" and "Nachrichten" are both ticked and I cant untick them to remove from startmenu.
How to remove these double items from the menu and how to untick these unnecessary items ?
Dieter
Sounds like a good time for a second hard reset.
Did you restore settings from a backup thew first time? That could be it.
I did have some "baby growing up" issues with my Athena the first go around. I tested, re-tested and generally <censored> around with it.
After I had to hard reset, and I tried to remember what worked, and what didn't.
Keep in mind, nothing works perfect but things can be worked around.
Had the same problem and this post from Daryl Mushtaq solved it for me!
-----------------------------------
hi Devany
not sure if you managed to find a resolution but i too had a similar problem.
i think mine was caused by phonemanager (which i have since uninstalled)
i found that when on battery power the slider in backlight settings did absolutely nothing. the only time the backlight would become brighter was when the alarm was going off.
searching throught the registry i found the solution.
navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\controlpanel\backlight
change the onoffbat key to 1 (mine was set to 0)
once done press the power key down for ages to reboot.
my slider now works fine.
hope this helps

Sorry - is a Newbie question:
how can I search the registry on a mobile device ?
how to navigate to the HKEY ?
Dieter
There are lots of registry editors for PPCs I use resco reg editor because it came with resco explorer but there are plenty of free ones.
As always with registry editing BE VERY CAREFUL you can easily brick your machine if you don't know what you are doing.

Add ons and fixes for Mogul

I know there are a few threads similar to this, but most of them quickly get off topic and are not all that useful. I was thinking about having everyone post what fixes and add ons for people have, and their overall experiences with each. Then we can have a single source to see which dialers work best, if any of the so called fixes actually work... all without searching 10 forums on 15 different sites.
Heres mine
Sprint Mogul
Pocket CM 0.15
jpl4 touch dialer
xda-developers power bar
the 8 button comm manager
spb mobile shell today add on
sms text sent notification disabled
I have noticed that my mogul is slower... especially when changing to landscape to use the keyboard, but i feel like this is pocket cm... please make additions... i think i am not the only one sick of looking through at least 5 different forums
I did away with PocketCM as it has some lag when opening. I switched over to iContacts and love it. Loads fast, does what I need which is to find contacts one handedly and when i hit OK or the top right X it closes it out completely. PocketCM stays open and running which can slow device down.
i meant to mention, right now i can't get redial to work properly with my dial pad... i have to go to call history and hit the hard dial button. Other dialers have worked, but i like the setup of this dial pad best... not sure if i'll change back to the mogul big button or not.
x button 2.0
todayAgenda (MT software)
tomtom navigator 6
total commander
lordsmiff battery level
all works
sms text sent notification disabled
How did you do this... I have been searching around and havent had much success

if you do that you will also disable your vibrate function. There is a cab file that will stop the notice.
Here's one:
http://www.trianglepowers.com/PPC/ViewApp.aspx?ID=54
so i changed back over to the "mogul big button dialer" which i don't like the looks of as much, but it works perfectly.
Also 2 days ago I installed the task manager 2.0 I found over at the hermes forum... suddenly my battery doesn't need to be recharged!! More like I unplugged it yesterday morning and a full 25 hours later it said 80% charged this am... maybe just a fluke. Anyone else get better battery with this addon? (Task_Manager_2_0_30487_2.cab)

I like the concept
I've been looking for a thread like this for a while. If I could make a suggestion, could you please list or attach the freeware files along with your posts. I'm having to do just as much searching to find out what a certain program does and download location as before.
I got rid of PocketCM... way too slow for me.
I'm running:
PIEPlus
10 button CommManager
WkTask
SPB Mobile Shell, Phone Suite, and Backup
Arcsoft MMS
dcd's touch dialer
Disabled SMS Sent Notification
Plus a bunch of other irrelevant stuff.
I notice lag sometimes when I go to send a text message and pop out the keyboard. Seems to have some lag going to landscape, and lag opening up the new text message window. Other than that it's fine for the most part.
I've used the following registry tweaks and gotten dramatically better battery life:
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=127164&highlight=registry
A couple of us have tested this and found a nice increase in battery life. On my Treo 700 it seemed to do nothing but on the Q it greatly helped (I ran for 12 hours yesterday push email in a low signal environment and stayed at 4 bars battery--normally would have been at 2 or 3)

(Again, use at your own risk -- I disclaim any liability -- except to say I've tried the above and it works well for me with no apparent downside).
On memory use, I found that people have tried removing the HTC_CM_Guardian and dddaemon from the \Windows\StartUp folder. I personally moved them to a "save" folder so I can restore them if I run into problems. One of them loads the voice dialer function and the other prevents certain changes to the system --- both appear to be memory hogs. I don't use voice dialer (I think even without this program the voice dialer will loan on demand anyway). Removing these two has improved my memory usage.
I use tMan as a task manager --- very handy and fast to close and manage running processes. Also very lightweight and easy to use.
Another REALLY useful tweak, the FlashVideoBundle along with the TCPMP player --- enables full screen YouTube videos launched from PIE. Is not compatible with the Flash plug in however, you can only have one or the other installed. See here for details:

Opera closing after flipping!

I hate to waste space and start a new thread .... but searching for this fix isnt working.
Backdrop: I used an Opera tweak located on the Tweaks for HD thread. Did the copying so I can speed up the Opera. .... Okay!
I'm not sure if this is related, but everytime i start Opera then flip it to view/navigate in landscape, it closes/minimizes Opera. Why is that? I had to reset it to make it stop. Once I use Opera and close it out....the problem comes back.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix without hard a reset?
Thanks in advance!
BTW...I got an HD...please ignore the avatar and "Device" below.
I dont have a fix, however I can confirm I have the same issue. Rotating thru 90degrees seemed to start Pocket Informant, causing Opera to minimize. I have also seen it trigger the Volume app, which strangely also rotated 90 degrees?
Im sure its a problem I've caused, tweaking the touchHD with lots of apps (and sometimes removing the tweaks) so Im currently doing a hard reset now I know what tweaks I want to use!
I had this to after changing some settings with 'advanced config'. I reset most of the settings and it stopped doing it, but im not sure which ones fixed the problem.
Well that sounds like a problem easy to reverse engineer then, if you already concluded that changing some settings caused the problem.
@Kenjari: what tweaks did you apply?
@rovex: Can you change back the settings you did in ACT one by one, to find out which one caused the bugging?

I had the same issues; within Opera, watching photo's or playing movies with Coreplayer. I think it's more Gyrator related, because the applications Opera build-in photo viewer and Coreplayer have those functionality as well. Together with Gyrator 2 it can get confused after a while... however it sounds odd, because after a restart it seems to work perfectly, but after a while it comes back again. Just shut-down Gyrator and start it up again will work. Still have to see how to exclude those apps from within Gyrator though...
@Kenjari: you have Gyrator or Gsen installed as well?
GreenFrog
I think it is Gyrator related, but ive removed my copy and it still does it sometimes, so i think something in the registry is messing things up.
I dont have gyrator installed.
Only think I installed and changed was the Ssmpsa change for the Home tab. From the there the problem started. Oh...I made the tweaks; cache size, file cache etc. A while back but it didnt start then.
Just noticed something else, if i open a link from within the RSS reader or the RSS reader is open Operas flipping fails, but if its closed it works.
it's gotta be app related (based on my experience); i did a hard reset reinstall half of the apps i had before and it's working (for now), lol.
Yeah I'm certain its an app or a tweak. The next step is identifying which one so it will stop.
Hi,
I had the same problem, i desactivate all option energy saver in advanced config and it works again. But I don't know which one is the one.
Hope this will be helpfull
Sorry for my english
i have this problem if i install microsoft dot net framework 3.5 compact
for gyrator
same problem here...
I also think it's something with Gyrator 2.
I hope we will find a solution soon.
Same problem here. after soft restart it looks OK. I don't have gyrator. Looks like it is not working after I installed some clock skin.
Same here, gone back to basic build me...hard reset, my money is on gyrator 2 or .net
seems ok now
OK, so far i've only installed after hard reset
sdkcerts
coloured top bar
skype
And i get the flip, lose focus thing too. I guess its not .net 3.5 or gyrator
Was it like that in the original build...hmmm

I have all 3 of those and I think it happened after installing skype. Besides I had to reset it because skype crashed when run for first time.
i removed the colored icon bar and installed the latest version of Opera.exe and OperaL.exe and no more issues with opeara when flipping to landscape.
EDIT: as a test i reinstalled the colored icon bar and (so far) no flipping issues in landscape.

Few gripes with the HD2, can they be fixed?

Hi,
Only had my HD2 for a couple of days having come from iphone and have a couple of gripes with it. Maybe it's just me though as never had a windows phone before.
When using opera internet browser you have to zoom in quite a bit to press links, which I find a little annoying. I've tried skyfire which is much better, but you can't use pinch/zoom. Is there a browser that has the best of both worlds?
Is there a quick way to turn bluetooth on/off without having to go into settings?
Is there a quick link to profiles? I know if you hold the end call button you can select between vibrate or ringer, but not silent. I must admit, this is one thing I liked about the iphone, there was a simple switch to change from silent/ringer without having to turn the phone on and press buttons.
When making/receiving calls sometimes the screen comes back on and my ear presses other functions, or disconnects the call. Has there not been a fix for this issue yet?
The call quality isn't great, sometimes the caller distorts on certain words/letters
And finally, is there any way to change the vibrate? Can it be set to 'pulse' rather than just a continous vibration. Can it be set just to give one or 2 pulses when receiving a sms/mms message, rather than vibrating for the full length of the message alert? (I've personalised mine and goes on for about 10 seconds)
I think the phone is great, and these niggles aren't the most major of things (accept the screen turning back on during calls) but it would make the phone more of a pleasure to use.
Cheers
There are fixes or programs for most of your niggles, but they may not integrate with the HTC Sense interface! That's one downside of such a deeply coded front end, and one reason why I personally have stopped using it!
There is a file available which can allow links in Opera to be clicked when zoomed out- sorry, but I don't have time to link to it at present!
For profile and radio (BT/WiFi/Phone) switching, I'd recommend SBSH Phoneweaver . OK, it costs $15 but you can set any number of profiles with switching based on time, location, busy status etc, or manually. The pop-up menu also has a set of switches for the various radios. It can be launched via one of the 3 Program buttons on the front page of Sense, or via a small icon in the Taskbar. I'm, not sure if it can have the vibrate times defined or not!

Thanks for your response. What are you referring to when you say radios? Please forgive my ignorance, I'm still learning
You say that you have stopped using the HTC sense interface so what do you use instead?
Just having a look at the phoneweaver, can this be used with the sense interface? Does it overide the phone settings?
Radios = WiFi, Bluetooth and Phone Radio. These are the things you see in the Comm Manager with the little green On/Off sliders
I'm now using a 'Light' custom ROm without the HTC Sense stuff. I prefer to use a plain 'Home Screen' (which you can achieve by going into Settings/Home (or Today) and selecting the Items tab. From there you can turn on or off any of the Today items or Sense itself.
A lot of the programs I use have their own Today screen plug-ins which suits me fine- Resco Contact Manager, Elecont Weather and Chronos clock/alarms, plus I use a Launcher program called Launchpad by Panoramic Software that is opened by tapping the top left of the screen; this has 40 definable 'Favourites' links plus a full set of Programs/Settings links.
Back to work now!

It can take over all the phone settings and can be manual or scheduled, plus some other useful switching options. You can try it free for 15 days!

Thanks for that thread, the trouble is I'm not a real computer/phone buff (yet) and so a lot of it goes right over my head. I don't even know what registry's are, and wy you need to edit them???
Ok, the concept of registry is quite simple. I'll put in a way so anyone can understand. Its a repository of stored key/value pairs.
Imagine a folder like structure, when you open a folder you will find a series of keys which, when opened, reveal the value.
Every key/folder is used by the OS or by some application. Its where all the back door settings are stored. So if you wanna make an app or the OS behave in a way you need to change the settings.
Using the registry is easy, but you have to make the first step... so what are you waiting?

Can I bugger up the phone if I don't know what I'm doing?
You can always make a backup of the registry you are changing. In resco registry editor tap and hold and press export. If the changes you made are not good, go to the folder where you exported the backup and open it. It will automatically imported and problem solved. But if you follow the instructions you won't have any problems, just don't change the registry for something you don't know or never seen in any tip/suggestion.
You could affect stuff if you dont do it right... but if you follow the instructions carefully without any typing errors, you will be fine...
Use this to Turn off BT easily.... it also does a lot of other stuff... basically, your bottom left softkey will become an "action" button... prssing that will bring up the screen shown in the screenshots. Works really well for me... also give you soft reset options without opening the back cover or powering off
