Answering speaker - Problem - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 General

Hy guys.
I bought this nice HTC Magician and it has a little problem. Speaker at the back of case works very well( I can play music and all), but the small speaker at the front panel( above the screen) for answering the calls doesn't work... You can't hear anything...
When I turn ON Speaker(back side) I can hear the caller, but and everyone around me....
And I can also normaly use it when headset is on...
In the mobile service they said that they have changed front speaker and that problem is somewhere on the motherboard...
Is there any salvation for this...

Assuming the service centre have changed the speaker for a good one, and they have cleaned the contacts on the motherboard, then they are most likely correct that it is a motherboard fault. Quite an unusual fault as normally earpiece speaker problems are either poor contact with the board or a faulty earpiece speaker.
If it is the motherboard, then a repair is not economic and could turn out to be impossible in some cases. Clearly the sound circuit is OK in as much as you get output using an earpiece. However, there could be an amplifier fault or a simple crack in the board connections. Without testing there is no way to know.
You could dismantle and check the connections (often the speaker has springy contacts that touch onto the motherboard). You can tweak them out a little and claen the motherboard contacts. BUT, if you trust the service centre then it would be a faint hope. If you don't trust the service centre (sometimes they give excuses because the job would take too much time for the amount they can charge - particularly on older devices), then you could dismantle (Always risky - unless you are familiar with this kind of thing - it could end up worse than when you start!!)
Mike

Mike, thank you very much...
I supposed that they probably didn't check everything as they should. Because hey're not officialy service or even to have experince with this devices. When servicer saw Magician he said " Oh this is complicated"... That's why I think that they even don't know how to fix the speaker or that they have put ther right one speaker. I didn't want to give them device to testing because I saw that they don't have experince as I said.
So I'm taking it, nesxt week, to service where I know that people are professionals...
I'll give feedback what i've done..

Bad sound quality

There was a thread here about that the voice from the earpiece is distorted. I experienced to have a similar problem. From the first day the sound was excellent but in 2 months it changed to distorted and then become very-very weak. At the same time the sound was good if a loudspeaker is on or if the hands-free is connected. Thus, I supposed that the contact becomes bad. To fix it, I disassembled the device. The *.pdf-file how to do that is included (33 megs). When the contacts were formed so they touch firmly the corresponding places on the printed board and the device was assembled, I heard nice voice from the earpiece.
So, in some cases the problem with the sound may be due to weak contacts. I suppose the contacts may become poor because the material for the outputs on the earpiece is not so elastic plus influence of vibration from the vibromotor plus influence of humidity.
Backup the system before disassembly because during this the backup battery may discharge completely!
Sorry wasn't logged on...
Thanks a lot I got this problem long time ago but I don't know how to disassemble it so I always try to shake it to fix ......
Great ! Very useful
Thanks
thanks for the guide..... very useful
Where can I find the 33meg pdf? I need to disassemble the device too...

That is what I thought th first time I opened my MDA Compact! Believe me I am the very first one I did when the device first came out! After lots of research let me tell you this:
IT IS NOT THE CONTACTS! IT IS THE SPEAKER! The membrane is of low quality when you open the device and "fixing" the contacts it will only make it to work for a few phone calls up to a couple of days at most! The speaker is burnt by the high amount of volume the motherboard of JAM gives to the speaker! If you want to solve your problem then you ll have to find a Nokia Center and buy a speaker for a Nokia 6610! Nokia 6610 and HTC Magician have exactly the same speaker! The only thing you have to do is to change nokia's black cloth ribbon on the top of the speaker with HTC's black rubber get it into your magician and there you are! You have a perfect sound again! My only advise is to use the call volume just a click less than the maximum volume so you won't blow away your new speaker!
I dissasembled and reassembled my MDA compact more than 11 times trying fixing the contacts with no permanent result! After replacing the speaker with a Nokias's 6610 speaker everything seems to work like a dream for at least a month now!
Its much more easier to get Nokia's spare parts than HTC's! The speaker cost me 18euros!
any chances you could post us nice pictures of these manipulations ?
I would love to do that but please I don't think that my magician could survive one more disassembly! In case of replacing a friend's speaker next week who has the same problem I will make sure I get those pics! Magician is extremely easy to be taken apart! The only hard parts in the removing process are the upper backplate which has to be removed very carefully in order to be fitted back in its place afterwards and the front faceplate where you will need something very thin like a thin knife or even better a razor to take it away from the black plastic on the sides!
where is the link to the pdf
Hey guys,
I cannot see the link to the pdf. I need to disassemble my Jam too.
Thanx, Martido
Sorry, I found it. Just woke up....
Oh, thank god, I'm not the only one, with this problem. But first i have two questions? Will i loose my warrenty when i open the device? Can O² discover that i opened it?
Did this contact fix solve the problem entirely, or not? Because katsj says the problem is the speaker!
Thank you in advance, such a great community!

Edit:
I read the PDF File and i have to say .. this is simlply impossible! You can cause so much damage .... i dont know where to begin. One small mistake and you can't forget your PDA. I think this is highly to dangerous. Is there no easier way to solve the problem ... some ideas??
Or do the pictures lie and it isnt that complicated??

My sound disappears during call...
Strange, during a call after a few minutes my sound disappears. I can hear the other caller, the other calleer can't hear me anymore...
But now I found a strange solution: when I pull up the volume button n the left a few times (it was already at maximum!) my sound is back!
Has anyone the same experience or a better solution?
I think when you pull up the volume there is this small tone and you hear this tone from the loudspeaker.
After you hear the tone, you cant here anything again, right?
I'm driving really crazy, i loved this XDA Mini since this prob occured and i want to find a solution as soon as possible ! I really dont know what to do
When i push against sd-card slot from inside, i hear everything .. again, so this is just a really small prob ..
I hope sb. find a solution quickly otherwise ... i dont know

I think it's a contact problem, so maybe the problem isn't that small... I don't want to open my device.
I don't think it has anything to do with the ROM or with the software.
(I wish it would, then there would be a solution in the end)
I had this problem too and found a fix:
I assume that while you are making a call, there is no audio from the earpiece. While on the call, adjust the volume up or down with the volume slider button. if you hear faint beeps and faint audio right after the beeps, your earpiece is working but there is a software glitch caused by the headphone jack.
Reset your device. Make a call (i.e. to your voicemail) and make sure there is audio incoming. Connect the (wired) headset. Disconnect the headset and you shoud now hear audio from the earpiece. You may have to reconnect/disconnect the headset a few times.
thanks
thanks for the pdf. ill check it right away!
U ROCK
THX GUYS>>>U ROCK...........I was soo worried.....
thx again..
Thanx dudes for the nokiaspeaker tip!
Just received my on ebay ordered nokia speaker and within a few minutes I fixed mine magician thanx to the pdf & already gainted knowledge on this page!
I bought this phone a year ago for a very nice price because of the damaged speaker and now at last I repeared it just for €3,- (instead of sending it to Orange risking over €100; I`m Dutch ya know )
hi guys...pulling this one out from the past....my magician has all the symptoms above, but with no luck, the replacement speaker did not do the trick...any other ideas/details/downloads....anything to get the audio back???\
BTW, i can hear glitches of sound if i play with the volume tab. That is to say, if i push it up, i hear the tone "ding" and i can hear the voice on the other end for a split second! So i must be close, no????

Can't Hear A Thing -- Pls Help

Problem is that, I can't hear a thing when answering calls on my I-mate JAM so I have to connect the earphones everytime. Please advice me on how to fix this problem. Mobile phones repair centers abound here in Manila but I don't want to bring my PPC for repair to just anybody. Would you happen to know of any service center that I can bring my i-mate JAM to here in Manila, Philippines? It's really difficult for me to connect my earphones to my unit everytime just so I could hear the person on the other end of the line.
Thanks in advance for the healp.
My wifes mini does this everytime she drops it. The ear piece area needs to be flicked with the finger to restore it. Somehow the speaker inside looses contact when the phone is banged around. Mabe you can try it. HTH.
Mine (MDA Compact 2, aka Charmer) gave me the other slightly 'better' problem. Instead of the small speaker being dead, the big speaker (that is reponsible for all ringing and speaker phone) is dead. I did drop it (with full leather casing) from knee level onto a wooden floor. It doesn't have any problem for a day or so until the sound disappear as I'm using the speakerphone mode. Now looking for ways to repair it.

earphone problem

ok this is a bit funny
handsfree earphone works,,,but the ear phone in the mda compact doesnt work
the normal sound speaker works,,just not the phone speaker
ok it works stuttery when i press up on the slide switch and i can hear the caller kinda stuttering
wierd software rpoblem i think
its not hardware problem as the slider makes it work,,if i constantly press up o the slider but then i hear the caller and the beep beep it makes to tell you its at full volume
My qtek s110 is doing the same thing after i dropped it, could i have knocked the contacts?
Can anyone explain why the volume slider would make it work.
Cheers
I think its a hardware prob only! Cz if the volume slider is getting the sound volume increased, you guys still couldnt get the full volume right? If so, its probably the speaker or its contacts getting the problem!

solution for no noise problems
Hey guys and girls, I also had problems with “no noise from the earpiece only.. and were puzzled with the problem for few days….until found the reason behind it.
As I am a lover with high-tech devices, I really wanted to fix this problem by myself (not prepared to pay few hundred dollars for repair from technicians).
I also want to contribute something on this site, as I have read great information’s from this site.
Here it goes.
I had this "no noise issue" problem with one of my device (have 2 sets of o2 mini) had no sound on the earpiece only (meaning speakerphone, hands free mic all works perfectly).
Now, to make everything short, I have done a great research with few personal technicians and even official technician from O2 Company and found the answers for this problem.
The fault actually lies with what is called the "Audio Daughter Board". It is a removable internal PCB that the speaker contacts to receive its audio signal from the phone. The board has a connector that is soldered to it which sits on another connector that is soldered to the main board. Both of these connectors can become removed from their respective solder connections usually as a result of a fall or physical impact. Usually all that is needed is a touch up of the solder points.
This Audio “daughter board” is connected with black connector at right hand side only, and the rest of the board with double sticky tape.
Most likely, the black connector has been disconnected to the “daughter board during drop of the device, as you need to solder the parts back (black connector has 14 legs, 7 on the left and 7 on the right) to get your earpiece sound back to normal.
I have done it, so can you (very small legs, so has to have delicate hands).
Now, mine works like a charm…. So happy…
After all, it was neither the programs, nor the legs of the earpiece, but the actual connection between the boards itself.
Hope my information helped.
Cheers
PS: I have updated my device to 2003 second edition with radio 1.13.00 but have no idea where to get pda programs. Can anyone let me know where to find such good programs?
It works!!!! Thanks
Your a genius
Hi im so happy it worked. I bought even a new speaker but this was noit the problem.
The internal speaker is now working but i found another problem with the ring tone liudness which i have to clarify now. So the serach will start again for me.
Again thanks.
Hi need help from all of u.
Hi my o2 mini have this problem, i can't hear anthing from the caller but they can hear me.may i know how to get the problem done, hope all of u can help me thank You.

You really rock m8.
I was very doubfull that this would work. I have tried everything else people has suggested to no avail.
BUT I thought I have nothing to lose in trying you suggestion.
And it worked. It really worked.
Thank you very much.
Sorry for what am i going to say, maybe i did not get things clear...
How on earth can you solder the black connector both on the main motherboard and on the audio daughter board? Am just asking cause my magician had a broken earpiece and when i open it to replace it the phone died. Strange thing is that when i remove the storage card it comes alive again but no sound from the earpiece. So this solution is great although i had to make the question just to know how to handle things.
Thanks guys
Got it guys, the one connector on the main board was detached completeley and got stuck into the other. That is why i thought that it was one piece.
Man , i said to myself how come these people got it soldered , they must all have personal nano robots lol
Update:
Burned the small black connector tha sits on the main rboard
Any chance for someone to know what sort of PCB is this so i can purchase one?
Firts of anything sorry for my inglish but i´m portuguese and my inglish is a litle rusty.
I known there are a lot of people whith this problem and i had to. I tried a lot of things and i find a solution. The major problem of the this is that the black conector don´t conect very well whith audio bord, and i do a trick, so i thake a litle peace of cotton roll in powertape (like one that is on back of keybord) and a put it as way that when e close it make pressure in de audio border conector(in left of earpiece) agaist de front cover.
I hope I can help

i have the same problem, and i will try to do as instructed. if it succeed everyone have a drink on me
Hello.
I have the same problem ina Qtek s100 but , like I dont know very well how to do look for the hardware piece that you send me the picture file because i cannot download it from XDA, it dont appear. If you send me to [email protected] I will be gratefull.
Thank you

no sound is coming out of the speaker - QTEK S200 - and a tip how to fix

problem: i discovered that my qtek s200 doesn't ring so i missed many calls. then i did find out that the speaker only work sometimes. i don't wanted to send it back for repair because i need a phone. and i don't want to loose the warranty
for everyone who have the same problem and want to try repairing the qtek s200 speaker quick and easy without loosing warranty:
i removed the case in the back/top where the camera is behind. just open the clips and remove it. there you can see the speeker in the left fixed behind a plasticcover (don't remove it - you will loose warranty).
take something like a janky or cotton and put it on the speaker. look out that the speaker will not be damaged. with only a little bit cotton now my speaker works perfectly.
i find out that many pocketpc's and windows-mobile-phones have problems with the speaker-contacts. i hope this tip can helpsomeone in the future!

Speaker Issue
Thanks for the feedback (a little search would have helped you to find the correct thread where this comment would have suited better instead opening a new thread). But I think the speaker issue is something that should give HTC some serious thinking. It's their fault of bad quality assurance, bad engineering and weak components. It should be their problem to fix the phone for you and not your own problem. If we all head out and fix the stuff that HTC has failed then where will this end ? We would accept all the crap they give us. This is in-acceptable.
Mine broke a second time after going for repair. I eneded up doing what you have done - with a bit of sponge.
you are right. the companys who are doing this small computers really can do some things better. but otherwhise: this little computers are to small and it is a wonder that they are working. and look at all this functions they have. think back in the time of 386 computers. the mobile phones today are very much faster and very much smaller and for this you have to accept some little problems like this contact problem of the speaker. and this 386 computers also didn't work right.
and remember, a 386 computer had problems just if you want to play a wav-file.
my tip just is for this people who don't want to spend to much time with waiting that they get their phones back from repair.
the problem is actual and it don't will help any of the people who have this problem if we talk about the producercompanys who should do the things better. they never will change this problems to save money in the production of the phones.
be careful with using a sponge. if it is to hard, the speakermembrane could get damaged. i done it this way: i tested out how much cotton is needed that the speaker is working right. if i take to much cotton, the speaker gets to quiet or if the pressure between plasticcover and the speaker is to high, the speaker sounds very nasty and can get damage.

Hi Schildzilla!
Thank you very much! I've fixed a problem in 3 minutes =) And it was even a fun. I was searching in the web for the solution and found many people having similar problems. What I really like is that solution does not need any techical skils. I used only stylus and cotton.
Thank you once again!!! =))
Thank youuuu for this extremely helpful tip... My O2 XDA Neo was on vibrate mode for the past 2 months...I thought I would have to spend some cash on geting a new speaker .....But thanks to you guys I was able to fix the problem with a small piece of newspaper Now The speaker works like before ...Many thanks again
How to open the backtop cover
Could you please explain step by step (pictures could be beneficial) how to open backto cover of QTEK S200 I tried pushing the little clips in the middle after replacing the battery but I didn't want to force it.
Is there any trick?

Thanks
thanks for adding this thread...i fixed the problem in no time!
Tks its help me. You save my money....
I used this method for awhile, but eventually doesn't work anymore.
Same here, I used the above method too, but after a while the problem came back !
Works like a charm! Thank you so much!
thanks man x 1000
this trick works, but after a while, your speaker will not be working. it happened to me. 1st u can just touch the membrane anywhere & there would be sound, then only when the top half is touched there is sound, then no sound at all when everywhere is touched...
waiting for my replacement speaker & hopefully it will last... my speaker lasted for about a year before this happened

Well sounds like it might be hardware. If you've done a few hard resets and tested before installing any software and the problem is still there sometimes, then I'd say it's hardware.
The m/board on the Hermes is not one that you can really work on with ordinary soldering tools. A repair shop could check by using a heat gun to check the contacts on the Mic. If that fails then it's likely either the mic coil or a problem with the contacts at or coming from the USB connector.
Mike
I say something more. Now i hear myself on voice note but really quiet like 1/10 normal volume.

Yes, but even with an open circuit / damaged coil, cracked connection, you can sometimes have sufficient leakage current to get a faint response from things like microphones and speakers. I still think it's probably hardware - but thoroughly check all the software possibilities eg clean install, stock ROM etc.
Hm i open hermes but im noob in that stuff so everythink look fine for me with microphone. I clean that think to protecting microfone. The problem of couse dont disappear. But.. its look like always when I plug in usb to spv, microphone start working fine.. Not always but moust of time it is solution.. If it is a hardware what i should to recommand to replace in service? Microphone?
ignore me, re-read what you put and decided i was a nab
