IE, the built in one. Works fine for me. Only thing that'll make me switch is if Firefox is realeased for WM Wouldn't that be great? Oh and throw in Thunderbird too and It'll be the best!

The better one is Netfront wich allow javascript, textbrowsing and many functions.
I use it on Universal since more than one year and I installed it on P3600 with success...

Opera Mini is amazingly fast. The fastest browser I've ever used. Too bad it need to run in java so entering text there's no autocomplete.
ThunderHawk is the most similar to a desktop browser and somehow their technology manages to fit about twice as much of a page on screen while still being legible. You pay a subscription of about 5 dollars a month, but after being away recently and having to use the PDA browsers a lot I was getting a headache using Pocket IE and Minimo, and the only browser which didnt make me claustrophobic was ThunderHawk.
They really should do a trial version of thunderhawk, because i dont believe many people would want to pay them before trial so its a very bad business model.
The problems with ThunderHawk are that it tries to usurp your operating system and it isnt like a normal PPC program. So, for simple short tasks I still use Pocket IE since it is less regimental.
I found Minimo to be pointless, Opera bloated, Netfront was ok, but pricey for not much advantage over an expanded PIE.
I would like to know if opera mini is compatible with my verizon xv6800. According to the opera mini web site it is not. If it is compatible, do I need to install something else for it to work?
Yes, its compatable. Download the high memory version of Opera Mini 4 and you should be good to go. Good luck.
Verizon doesn't ship Java with the XV6800, so Opera Mini won't run natively. You have to either install a Java client (search the links here for a recommendation) or install a new ROM that includes a Java client (the DCD kitchen includes Java as an option). Once you install Java and Opera Mini, you'll actually run Opera Mini from within Java. Opera won't appear in your programs list.

To answer the question, yes opera mini is compatible after installing a java manager. I use mini 4 and 4.1 on my 6800. Works 1000 times better than the pocket ie for 99% of browsing.
I can confirm as well. I used emerstec jbed and opera mini 4.1 beta and I love it. Pages load in a few seconds, even ones with a lot of graphics (xda-forums main page with all the phone pics). I also have opera 9 mobile beta and rarely use it anymore since opera mini is several times faster at loading pages. I haven't had many rendering issues when loading pages either. There is a good thread in the development and hacking sub forum with all the files you need.
Anyone figured out how to load the new Opera Mini 4.1 with the touch of the IE button? Or how to get it to work as the default browser?
I Just Flashed a new ROM to my wizard (TNT 19213) and decided to investigate getting a new web browser to replace internet explorer. Does anyone recommend one over another? Also, how do you load them onto your wizard?
You could try Minimo. It's a mobile browser based on Mozilla.

They have an exe install you run from your pc or a cab install you can copy to your phone to install from.

Opera mini, no doubt about it
Access NetFront Browser is free, and works similar to the much lauded SkyFire browser (also awesome, but in a closed beta test cycle that seems to be never-ending). The thing that sets these apart from the remaining browsers is that they are full-feature browsers, that show the internet as it would look on your desktop. In my opinion, Skyfire is superior at rendering sites true to their appearance on desktop browsers. NF browser is a little behind, and has a hard time substituting fonts, for example. There are both advantages and disadvantages to both browsers, as with anything. The main disadvantage to both of these is that you either need a wifi connection, or an unlimited data plan, or you're going to rack up a bill quickly, downloading full web sites.
For mobile browsers, there's Mozilla's Minimo, which is nice, and opera mini, which seems to be favored on this bulletin board site, and Microsoft-backed Zumobi (also in beta testing), all of which have nice features, but won't be the "best" for everyone. Keep in mind they are all mobile browsers, which means things like flash, javascript, and other web 2.0 features might not display properly, or might not work at all. All are much easier on the data plan than the full browsers mentioned above, but that means degraded websites only. Frankly, I just use the IE browser when I'm away from a hot-spot. I'm just more selective about what I surf to...
One last thing I almost forgot: All these browsers are free, but there is a pay-for version of Opera that is supposed to be superior to Mini. Opera Mini also requires the use of the MIDlet Manager or some other Java Emulator, making single-click launching much more complicated than necessary.

someone on the developement and hacking made a cab instalation of the new opera mini browser that installs java emulator + opera mini and works best. has a dirrect shortcut in the programs folder and loads web pages extremely quickly over gprs.
I havent tried any of the "betas" floating around. Opera mobile is awesome too, but loads pages slower. works best with wifi.

I dimly remember Skyfire ... it seems to be similar to this one. I think it first appeared spring 2008.
But I never heard about it again and I just don't trust it ^^

I use skyfire. To be able to use it on he beloved HD, you somehow need to decrease resolution. Skyfire is great for flash.
Has anyone tryied "Bolt" ?
Finally, Bolt - the public version of the Thunderhawk browser that is around for a while. Tough sell, a browser that relies on proxy server-side image rendering, similar to Skyfire and Opera Mobile. So how will they make money? Data-mining usage patterns, subscriptions or ads - no one got to work it until now. Good luck, the environment is hostile to your concept...
Guys--Bitstream is a real (and real old) company in Cambrdige, MA. Started out as a typeface company. They are the Thunderhawk people, for whatever that's worth. It looks to me like Bolt is an alpha release masquerading as a beta or version 1 or something, but I'm going to try it because it's from Bitstream.

aq soft reset got it working but can confirm flash doesnt work

Just got mine.
Downloaded and tried it. Very similar to Opera Mini. Visited youtube.com and clicking on a video just opened a .3gp stream which opened up in Coreplayer. Not really any use on the Touch HD as there was really no way I could see to navigate around due to the lack of hardware buttons.
I too have the same files on "my documents" folder and cannot open, based on BOLT's install instructions it supposed to download the browser and rights stuff but nothing actually downloads to the folder....I too need help
I have an HD2 (TMO USA) ordered, should come in a day or two.
Does the HD2 come with a JVM for running Java midlet (J2ME) applets?
If so, what kind is it? Any good, or better to use one of the hacked Jbeds that are available on this site?
What would I use with it? Probably mainly the Gmail java applet? Although one can access Gmail through a browser, or via Imap and the WM mail application, I have always found the Gmail java applet to be a handy way to access mail.
I used to use Opera Mini through java, not sure how useful that is now. For one thing, there is a WM version of Opera Mini 5, not needing java. Also, Opera Mobile is now very similar to Opera Mini, a version comes with the HD2, and one can download a newer version, and it is free. (Or--do any readers still find it useful to use java opera mini, on a wm phone?)
In any case, does a jvm come with the HD2? Any good? If people prefer using a different jvm (than what comes with it), which do you recommend?
The HD2 does indeed ship with a Java Virtual Machine...but in my opinion it is not a very good one. It's an official Sun Microsystems JVM, and I personally have always hated the ones made by Sun. I use an older Esmertec JBED one that I found here in the Wizard forums from back in 2006, and it works pretty well.
Again, in my opinion, Opera Mini is kinda useless seeing as Opera 9 works soooo well on the HD2. The speed between the two is about the same to me over 3G, though over EDGE Opera Mini is a bit faster because of it's server side rendering.
The only problem with the older JVM's that you find, is that they are made for devices with much smaller resolutions than the HD2, so the text and buttons are miniscule. So thats another thing to keep in mind.
Overall, I would just stick with the included Opera 9, and don't upgrade to 10 if you wan't to keep pinch to zoom as it is not supported as of yet, and if you REALLY need to use the JVM version of Gmail, just use the included JVM. I hope that helps!

One nice thing about some of the Jbeds--the ability to create a shortcut in WM that will open up the applet directly (such as Gmail), without having to open up the java app first.
Also, with some of the jbeds, it is possible to hack it, so one doesn't get those damn permission questions about whether it is allowed to access the internet, etc.
Can the built-in JVM do those things?
As far as I can tell, no and no. I cannot make the built in JVM create out of program shortcuts, but there is a freeware application on the WM Marketplace to do just that that I use everyday. And no, I cannot make the permission messages go away either.

You mean a freeware app especially to go with that Sun JVM, and create shortcuts for its apps? What is it called?
No no, its a freeware app to work with ANY Java VM, including the built in Sun one. Its on the WM Marketplace, and its called JavaShortcut. Just like that, no space.
me, just FYI I've never been able to get any of the g-mail applets to work on the built-in JVM, so you'll at least need to try an alternative one, although I suspect that even that might not get it working on this phone.
Upgraded to HD2 from TP2 four days ago, really impressed with the speed, and do miss the hardware keyboard!
My 2 cents: it's easy to set up gmail with the built-in email client but I do lose the ability to search emails (somebody enlighten me!). I have tried using the java gmail app with built-in Sun jvm but no luck, gmail app won't even open.
As for browser, Opera mini is still my favorite. For 1 I have been using it for so long and really enjoyed the speed (and knows how to avoid all the pitfalls!). For 2 I don't have to clean cache as no cache files are stored on my phone!
But when it comes to anything requires a password, I switch to opera mobile. The auto-rotating is kinda annoying when browsing in bed

As I wrote, there is now a direct WM version of Opera Mini 5, so a jvm is not necessary for that. And it is different from Opera Mobile. It starts up much faster, for instance. The other option is the new Opera Mobile, v 10. Three different Operas one can use.)
By the way, pinch to zoom can be added to practically any app, with tweak apps such as BSBTweaks. I don't really find pinch to zoom to be such a great feature though. Easier to use the zoom scroll bar.
Regarding using the Gmail midlet with the included JVM--there is a problem with that! (See other thread.)

You're wrong on the permission messages. Highlight an applet in the jvm, choose permission settings, and you can choose for it only to ask permission the first time, never again.
One other nice thing about the Sun JVM included on the HD2--you can choose to install the midlet apps in either main memory or storage card.
The ability to go directly to the midlet app, without having to go through the jvm interface first, is important, a nice feature that one can tweak with many of the esmertec jbeds. If one can do that with this Sun JVM, using that freeware app you speak of, then this Sun JVM is looking pretty good,
Except--that so far I can't get the Gmail midlet to work with it at all!
