At&t's "Pure" and original Touch Diamond 2 differences... - Touch Diamond2, Pure General

I've spent the last month falling for the Touch Diamond 2 and admiring its sleekness and look. I was wondering when or If it would EVER get a US/canadian release... until today, when i found out about the ugly Pure.
Why, oh why did our release get the PURE instead of the beautiful original diamond 2???
The reason I'm frustrated is because i like everything about the original diamond 2's design and hate the Pure's look. But i find out that the Pure has the 3.5 mm jack, AND 3G since its a US release.
Are there any other differences I should know???

Hmm are you sure the Pure has a 3.5mm jack?
You can see all the specification differences here:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone2=2956&idPhone1=2689
The Diamond 2 has a front video camera which is useless in the States because no network supports video calling; the Pure simply omits the camera.
Also, if you're going to get a new contract w/ 3g data plan, the Pure is a lot cheaper than the Diamond 2 right now:

Ahh, it doesnt have a 3.5mm jack either. thanks for the link.
Form factor, style, and look is a big deal for me. But I realize that the price difference between them is pretty large, with Pure being quite cheap. Which means if I bought the diamond 2, but I would be paying MORE just for the appearance and HAVE lack of 3G. Ugh.
I'm not going to be in a data plan anyways; but im worried that in the future that I do add one, I won't be able to use it.
Also, does anyone know if the actual Touch Diamond 2 will EVER come to the states/canada? or do you think the Pure will be it, and take its place here for good?
In the latter case, I'll probably buy the Touch diamond 2. I cant stand the Pure's look.

There was an initial advertising of the HTC Warhawk, which is supposed to be the AT&T version of the Diamond 2 but I don't think that'll be released. Also, the $0.01 price only applies if you get a new contract with 3G data plan; otherwise it's more expensive.
I think the Pure looks bad too So much glossy black plastic gives a generic and cheap look.

The Warhawk is the Pure. The Warhawk was AT&T's internal name of the phone. I have the Pure and I like it alot. Sure I think the Diamond 2's original body was sexy but I like the Dark/Blueish tint of the Pure.
The ONLY thing I really hate is the stupid USB connector cover. It's annoying and always restricts my USBs from going all the way in.

I like my Pure a lot too. Only complaints are that the stock ROM could be a little better (par for the course though, right?) and the screen protector AT&T ships with the phone is...sticky? Slows me down and makes some of the gestures harder to use (again, par for the course I think).

You probably have the Screen protector backwards. The "sticky" side is supposed to face the screen. The smooth side is what you use. No problems here with the screen protector.
The Stock Rom was crap, as always. First thing I would do is flash the official HTC WM6.5 Firmware.... or a custom one. I always recommend using an official firmware for a while on a new device.

I think the Pure is an excellent piece of hardware. You have to see it in person to appreciate it. I would find somebody who has one and hold it in your hands before you decide you don't like it. It is really very nice hardware.
If you don't like the colors of the housing, I'm sure there will be third-party housings available soon. And maybe even one that looks like the TD2 if that's the look you like.
I should also point out that the phonecanvas that most of the ROMs here on XDA use are incompatible with the Pure, because the Pure does not have a front video camera. You basically want the Leo phonecanvas, not the standard videocalling phonecanvas.
It's unfortunate because, contrary to popular opinion, the Pure DOES support video calling, just not with a front camera. AT&T has an option to sign up for this feature, but none of the videocalling ROMs I've tried actually work with the Pure.

You could always switch the pure's housing for that of the TD2. But you would also need the buttons, new digitizer, and maybe a new screen(They use different kinds I think) And it definitely has no 3.5mm jack

My Pure is all black (ATT)
I just got the Pure (not blue...it's all black) Saturday and must say I'm pretty impressed so far. I loaded SPMobile 3.51 and it really makes the phone much more finger friendly and quicker to do things with than TF 3D -at least for me... highly recommend checking into SPM. Other than a little laggy at times, I'm quite happy. Last phone was the IPhone 3GS.

I find I like having the front facing camera eventhough I can't use it. I'm sure that if the phone did have US 3G bands you would be able to use it. Only thing is the people ur calling would need a FFC also. So useless but not for taking ok pics of yourself.

Really that strange. Cause all of them I've seen are a Dark Midnight Metallic blue. Look at it in the daylight. I need pictuere proof.

No not really. If you manage to scroll the phone animation to almost the second dot. (1.5-2) Where you see the back of the phone you can see the blue. Yes from far away it may look black but it's blue.
Are you color blind? You should get your eyes checked.
Just noticed that it says black on the right corner. Unless they changed it from what it was it's still blue. It's dark and has blue highlights. Don't make me have to go into an AT&T store and ask to take pics of one for you. Cause I will.
Oh and I'll link some pics off google. I'd like to add that you can only tell in picture if the lighting is right. In person, well, I don't know how you can miss it unless you use ur phone at night and in dimly light places.

OMG Look at the back highlight BLUE
And they'll ask what service I have and I'll reply T-Mo. Then they'll ask how much you pay. And I'll be like $50. Then they'll say what phone and I'll repy TD2. They say, And you pay $50. I say, yep 500 Whenever min, free T-mo to T-mo, Unlimited txt, along unlimited data. And they'll think to themselves. Damn why did I get AT&T and why do I work for them. Then after taking the pics I'll LOL out of the store and come home to post them up.

lol...whatever dude...it's black and my eyesight is perfect. You seriously need to get a life.

Ugh that blue tint makes it look even more lame.
I'm gettin the original touch diamond 2 regardless.

Why argue when you've been proven wrong? It may appear black but put some light on it and it is indeed blue. I have purchased 3 Pures(One for my wench, my rugrat, and myself) from 3 different places and they are all the same color. They appear black but when you get some light on it there is a very heavy blue metallic hue to it.
Also someone mentioned the warhawk name previously, if you have a pure open the back cover, remove the battery, and read the sticker. I'll give a hint, it says HTC Warhawk (ST6356).
edit,
here's a pretty clear pic from http://www.smartphonemag.com/cms/blog/414/review-att-htc-pure-part-1unboxing

Time to man up here... you guys are right... after more careful, close examination it really is the dark blue. My bad! Guess my eyes are not as good as they once were. Sorry! I honestly thought it was black - as advertised by AT&T.

Well thanks for manning up. No hard feelings.
I don't know why they advertise it as black. It should be asdertised as a Midnight Blue or something. Or Starry Night or Nght Sky or whatever color they want other than black.

Vote, if both had 3G in the US:
Touch Diamond 2
Pure
?

I have both TD2 and Pure
I bought the TD2 for myself a few months ago, and the Pure for my wife this week. So far, they are both great. I like the pure better in the USA for the 3G. The USB cover is a pretty bad Fup on the part of AT&T / HTC. There is not 3.5 jack, but the one I bought came with the adapter (the one that also lets you charge and listen). Skip the ATT clear clamshell case, it kills the touch screen's sensitivity, and makes the edges of the screen totally non-responsive.
The ATT ROM is pretty slow, but so was the stock TD2 ROM unbranded with WM 6.1. I am getting ready to flash it to a Tom Condon ROM. His ROMs have been working great for me for a several years. My TD2 has his WM 6.5 released on or about 8/15/2009, fast and flawless. I ran his ROMs on my Trinity too.
If you are in the USA, the Pure is your pick. There is no reason to waste the money on an EDGE smartphone when you can have the same 3G cheaper. No Brainer, end of discussion.

Bye Bye Wing :(

I love my wing, well, did. It is malfunctioning now and instead of buying another one, for nearly the same price you can pick up a Hermes.
I'm not all that familiar with all these phones, but the Hermes seems more powerful, faster. Was curious if this is a good idea to switch or not...
Is there anyway to use Open Touch on the Hermes that you know of?
Thanks for the suggestions, comments.

No. OpenTouch is a Herald ROM only. The Hermes DOES have a few good ROMs, though as well as the ability for bigstorage roms. (60-80+ free mb of space.)
I guess you'll be hanging out with the Hermes folk now ...
Maybe go by their forum and check out some of the ROM's over there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=254
I don't want to go to that forum. lol.... The short time I've been here, I really like the couple people who keep this place alive!
I'm going to call HTC today sometime and get a price to fix it, TMobile said basically "too bad, so sad" because I didn't buy it from them.
Maybe if it's reasonable, I'll get it fixed and sell it... actually in really, really good condition besides malfunctioning button.
But the question still remains, is it a good switch? Or are there some negatives to going with that phone over the wing?
You should probably ask the people in that forum... I'm sure they'll sell you on it.
I guess you can look at it, like asking your current girlfriend why you should leave her for another girl... hahaha
Good point. I have a really bad taste in my mouth about HTC and T-Mobile right now though. T-Mobile won't do crap to help me, and HTC wants me to send it in then they'll tell me how much to repair. If it's a $200 repair bill... I'd buy a new one, but if I don't have them repair it, they charge you $40 to "look" at it. Unbelievable. Spending hundreds on a phone and 4 months later you got a brick due to poor manufacturing.
Ugh, sorry for the rant... I'm just a bit pissed off at the moment.
Ok well I took the plunge and got the Hermes. I ended up getting a SquareTrade warranty with it for $30, covers the phone for a year with no deductibles.. way cheaper than tmo's phone insurance too.
Anyways, I may sell the wing to someone here if anyone wants it (still works VERY well except for button issue that is probably software fixable/patchable).
It was very nice meeting you all, thanks.
Good luck.
Depends on how much you're selling it for. Also, post pictures of it to see what kind of condition its in.
Double Post
I won't be selling it until I get squared away with the new phone.
I'll definitely post up some pictures. The condition of it is Good. A few normal wear and tear scuffs but barely noticeable, no major scratches, screen is perfect condition (had screen protector on it). No wear on the buttons. I mean, really, if I had to rate it's condition on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd say it's an easy 9.
HTC said they would do repair, so if you can't fix it yourself, that may always be an option as well.
What seems like a fair price?

SOLD!!!
I'm really tempted to "sell it" to a "friend" through ebay and have him get a squaretrade warranty on it, then send it in "broken" in 3 months. then I could get it fixed for a whopping $30
But I can't get myself to do it, I'm too honest.
The Hermes can do TouchFlo. Check this ROM out:

see, you have to look at it like this.... you got screwed with retail pricing on that phone ... so its not an issue about karma. it's totally fair.
Just out of curiosity what is this button issue your having?
My camera button stopped working and gave me a scare as i couldnt get into the bootloader after a bad flash.
theformula,
The phone has a mind of it's own, The d-pad button (right and sometimes top) just start "pressing" even though they aren't pressed, imagine trying to do something on the phone, writing email, messages, etc.. while someone his holding down that button. It's unusable.
I just got my 8525, and although the form factor on the wing is a bit better (barely different), I must say, the 8525 is a substantially better device. Not trying to talk trash, I loved my wing (and this community), but it just is what it is.
How is it better?
I feel like a jackass getting into it, lol... like "your wings suck" and I don't mean at ALL to come off like that. I still love my wing and it's getting fixed soon!
But.. why is the Hermes better?
- better battery cover, doesn't slide up during normal usage
- camera takes better pictures- better color handling, plus has FLASH
- SUBSTANTIALLY faster unit, it's a 400mhz processor and it shows drastically, just sliding S2U2 slider, or pressing the "end call" button and how fast it responds, opening apps, it's insanely noticeable, and my wing was OC'd to 273mhz. The Hermes just operates way, way, waaaaaayyyyyy faster - opening htc photo album is way faster, using gestures is faster, just everything
- Less hacks, no keyboard hacks or anything to use with ROMs
- No need for battery status software
- Cool software like "flashlight" that turns the flash on to illuminate
- The ROM's are more solid, better management software - has a manager that removes virtually all need to make registry tweaks (set IE cache/cookies, remove icons at bottom of today screen, etc.)
- Keyboard works WAY better, buttons are bigger and just incredibly easier to type on, never have to re-press a button or press harder for it to recognize keystoke... this is a selling point in and of itself.
- Has 3G capability (if you ever need it)- and certain models have front camera for video conference (need 3g i think)
- Has a scroll wheel on the side as well, that is a select button as well, so you can scroll down webpages and select links, scroll through contacts, etc.
- Has push-to-talk feature - if you ever decide to switch carriers, it's more than capable.
So thats what I can say for now... really, it's just a few milestones ahead, and I can't get over how much faster it is, previously daunting things on the wing or not an issue at all anymore.
to be fair, I'll mention a few things I like better about the wing
- the rubberized grip (looks less professional, but feels better)
- spring loaded slider
- cover for micro sd card slot, the Hermes' isn't bad, but the covered one is better
- slightly smaller form factor
- better button placement
- The screen colors are a little more vibrant on wing (although hardly noticeable)
Basically, the form factor and design of the wing are nicer, but hardware (processor/camera/keyboard) and software are much better on Hermes.
But as I said, I'm NOT trying to dog on the wings - so lets not turn this into a flame xbox360 vs ps3 style war.
I take it you have sold the phone?
I hope you haven't. I have a P4350 and I need a LCD very badly. Mine was smashed a while back and I have really started to miss my phone. Right now I am using a Nokia N95 and it's great but it wasn't a Herald.
Well I haven't sold the phone, I'll have my hands on it for another few months unfortunately. Unless you are willing to pay $180 for it... it hasn't been fixed. Everything works perfectly except the d-pad seems to have a mind of its own (I THINK it's the dpad) -- condition is an easy 8.5 - 9 out of 10.

Onnia 7 QC issues?

(why is there no omnia 7 forum?)
I've just been told by t-mobile that the Omnia 7 has QC issues and their deliveries yesterday were returned to their suppliers, anyone know what these might be?
I just picked one up today from Orange!.. I wonder if mine is affected
I heard from vodafone store that their delivery of LG Optimus (Win7) came in and had to be recalled immediately without sale due to a bluetooth issue.
The build quality of the Omnia is one of the things that worries me after reports like this and the issues with the Galaxy series.
Evilanglic, since you now have your hands on one, what are your impressions of the device? Does it seem solid?
Much more solid than I was expecting. I thought it would feel like a light plastic shell like the Samsung Galaxy S.
It really is very nice, no creaks, just a solid slab of deep black technology! Good times.
The back is actually wrapped in metal to the edge of the screen on the sides, it is only the top and bottom of the device which are solid plastic sort-of-cap/ends of the device.
You definitely can't call it a unibody (or can you?..) but as I say... sort of mostly 'wrapped' in a sheet of metal.
It was a close call between the (SAMOLED) Omnia and the (very nice crisp LCD) HTC Mozart, the latter fits the hand better of course due to size, but in the end the slick all black face of the Omnia, adorned with its high contrast SAMOLED screen, just made it worth it despite the low actual PPI!
It would have been nice if the rockers and camera buttons where more metallic or... metal, but instead they are old school black plastic. They work well nonetheless.
The home button is also not the most premium of push switches (compared to iPhone of course) but it is nice to have a soild key!
I would urge you to get both of these devices side by side in the store if you can, but be careful because it took me at least 20 minutes to tell the man which one I wanted to take out lol...
Here are a few pics of the construction as links:
I'm jealous. I have about 2 weeks before WP7 comes out in the US. That and you guys got the better selection of phones (minus Micro SD expansion). I am definitely getting the Focus though. Best choice out of the options available in my opinion.

Yeah. I wont touch a single Samsung phone after the trouble the Vibrant gave my stepmom. It's not fun trying to give tech support to someone 1500 miles away, over the phone with the issues, to a lady with no clue about technology.
EDIT: It reminded me of the time I had to help someone with Windows ME. They didn't know where the "desktop" was! As you can imagine, that was a loooooong phone call.

I've owned a few samsungs in the past (years ago lol), and they didn't give me any trouble. I suppose it was before the major smartphone race of the the last few years though haha.
I only went for the Omnia after holding it myself, there was no way I was going to order a Samsung phone without getting into a store and exploring it - but it was more solid than expected.
Hopefully if there are any support problems in the future, I will just take it to the high street store I got it from and play super dumb and demand a replacement or different phone lol... no harm done.
It seems like a negative thing to say but keep in mind that the phone really is good right now, no problems at all, everything works perfectly so far.
Note for those not in the know: the location based issues of Android Samsungs are not present here! On maps it focuses down with GSM triangulation and GPS pinpoint kicks in a couple of seconds later, super speedy!
Well that's a relief. I suppose the biggest factor that makes it feel so much better is that it's got some metal, right?
Mine's just arrived.
First impressions are very good. It feels very sturdy with no creaks and the metal casing is nice. It feels much more solid than my HTC Blackstone, although I am worried about such a large screen getting damaged!
It's going to have to stay off whilst the sim card registers. Annoying wait ahead!

The screen quality is awsome by the way. The device also looks way better in the flesh. It seems it may also have Cornings gorilla glass which would be a welcome addition!

For web browsing I might have thought it possibly more comfortable to use the Mozart's SLCD with RGB pixels (higher subpixel count) if you have good eyes that is lol.
I just cant get over how amazing the 4" SAMOLED looks though...
Because of the all black screen surround, and the nature of the WP7 text laid out to the edge of the screen, it sort of looks like your phone is just one massive display, which a lot of it is... lol
The blacks of the SAMOLED just merge with the black surround! So cool.
Where does the screen end?! lol

I am a happy omnia 7 owner. Just like what the other said, solid construction, beautiful screen.
But the build in app is sub-par (vs lg optimus) and I hope I don't regret choosing a device with 8GB of storage.
Cheers
A user over on MoDaCo forums is reporting that their T-Mobile account manager has told them that the Omnia 7 has been temporarily pulled due to software issues.
I've been waiting on one of these for some time as well, and was told today that their most recent update for handset stocks (issued internally today) did not include a new batch of Omnia 7s. The CSR I spoke to wouldn't be drawn on any specific problems with the handset, except to say that "there have been a few issues" with the ones we've received, and that I would be receiving a call in due course to let me know when mine would be delivered.
Does anyone else know anything about this?
gcaw - apparently they have dispatched Omnia 7's now on T-mobile, so I'd get on the phone ASAP.
risq - many thanks for letting me know about that. As it happens, fifteen hours after I'd made my previous post, I received a call from T-Mobile to let me know that they had stock and confirming delivery later today, but I'm grateful that you informed me of that - and hopefully others will have taken note of that information and successfully placed orders themselves.
I was also pleased to hear from the CSR (the same one I spoke to yesterday) that T-Mobile is extending the same deal to new Omnia 7 owners as it offers to Android buyers, giving 3GB of monthly data usage at no additional cost, rather than the standard 1GB offered under the fair usage policy for other handsets.
Compared with the rather pitiful 500MB offered on O2's contracts, that's a pretty awesome deal.
QC seems top notch!
Posted this on another forum. I'm happy about the build:
Well it had to happen sooner or later, in under a week I've dropped the Omnia 7 while lazily trying to hit snooze just moments ago (typing this message with my phone now lol). Dropped from about table height, and while it was dark, sounded like it landed on a corner first... Picked it up in the dark and dropped it again, this time hitting face flat on the ground.. My floors got a wood finish on top of a normal concrete slab so its pretty solid. Shocked and not feeling so lazy anymore, turned lights on, inspected phone, and absolutely no scratches to be seen...i think this is due to the matte looking polycarbonate plastic they use, plus the color looking like its been amalgamated with the actual plastic, I say this because I remember on my htc touch HD the bezel would scratch/chip so easily because all it was was some cheap paint over plastic/metal? As for glass, i read it's gorilla glass, whether or not it is, I'm glad it isn't scratched... My screen protector can't come soon enough,
Either way, I'm glad to know the Omnia7 is a solid beast . Though in truth, after dropping it, my excitement and feelings of it being a new toy has slightly washed off... My feeling now is 'it might be damaged somewhere'

Atrix owners question

Just wanted to know if this phone is an upgrade from the Captivate (prefer a former or current owner of both phones to chime in...)
I know the screen is not as pretty, and there are issues with the bootloader unlocking time will solve that I am sure =).
next month my contract is up so I am looking for a cappy replacement.

I had it but there were just too many issues (you can search these threads as there have already been plenty of them pointed out) so I returned it. I am waiting for the summer phones to come out. If you don't care to have a custom kernel / full fledged ROM then it may be a good upgrade for you. I however would like a bit more control over my device
I jumped from the captivate to the atrix. I personally love it. Its gps among other things work out of the box.

I came from a captivate to the atrix and I like it. I flashed a new rom on my cally like every third day hoping to fix its issues. The atrix doesn't have any real roms yet but every thing already works great on the atrix so I'm content. I'd be happy if I got it to OC and enabled hsupa.

had cappy now atrix.
everything about teh atrix works better and faster.......even with atrix being stock VS my cap with custom rom/kernel and overclocked.
im annoyed that the bootloader is locked, but when it comes down to it, theres not a better phone on at&t at the moment.
My wife loves her Atrix, but she is new to android. I am going to keep my Atrix so long as I don't have any problems with this one. My first one would shut down on its own with 60% battery still.
Someone above mentioned returning theirs because of problems, but seriously I think its a select few with different problems. I dont see many people popping up with the same problem. Obviously do some research before buying it. If you enjoyed flashing roms on your captivate because you liked to tinker with it, then dont get this phone. If you only flashed roms because your phone didnt do what you wanted to, then I'd say give this phone a shot. I love the webtop and the car dock for this thing. The comment that made me want to keep mine was someone in a similar thread saying "2 cores and 1 gig of ram vs 1 core and 512 meg of ram..." eventually the software will be able to bring this thing beyond the captivate, and in the mean time it is running at least as good, if not better, than the captivate.
oh and for all the qHD complaints, I just took my screen protector off and the screen looks better and responds better now. I already have a parts teardown guide for this so hopefully if I need to replace the screen it wont be too difficult.
just my 3 or 4 cents
Yeah I am not too concerned about how locked down it is, as long as I can root it and install what I want I am happy with that (bootloader will be hacked in due time or openly unlocked by the MAN), my main concern was the screen quality, and if there were more or less functions than the cappy, Note: not that the captivate really fully functions as all of us gps users know.
However the cappy has such a nice screen and coming from a 3GS to the captivate even with its flaws was an upgrade.
I just want to make sure that going from the captivate if I sacrifice the higher contrast nicer color/responding touch screen to the Atrix's higher resolution but less fancy screen that its not going to be a deal breaker. In the end it comes down to function.
Thank you guys also for getting back to me your input is valuable.

I had the captivate before the atrix as well, and at first i was nervous because i read these forums sayin the screen quality was pretty bad on the atrix. However, maybe i'm blind or have different tastes but i find the screen to be much more natural. When i place the cappy next to the atrix, the cappy looks like it's trying to induce a seizure with all the poppin colors.
The only thing i don't like (probably easily fixable), is the stock keyboard. It seems the harder you press the less responsive the keyboard is. Instead of downloading a new keyboard (i will in due time) i just turned off the vibration and it seemed to help a bit.
I will not be giving up my cappy though, but it will not be my main phone. I will use it to flash the bajesus out of it, cause lets face it, that's a great hobby
The only thing I would add is that you will want a new launcher. The screen resolution makes the icons small. I bought ADW launcher EX as it allows for resizing icons. I do not miss my captivate - no lag and better email and calendar on Attic.

I will say if you sit the Atrix next to an iPhone 4 it makes the screen on the Atrix look 10 years old. Say what you want to defend that but it's the truth. The qHD screen doesn't even belong in the same league and I am by no means an Apple fanboy.
The phone was about 80% plastic, although it was very light to carry.
Now that is just my opinion and I would suggest you go look at one for yourself before making your decision.
Edit: Also there were a lot of small things that I didn't like, design wise. The ear piece speaker looked like it was just stuck on there quickly, wasn't aligned. Same with the camera hole, it was not aligned with the hole on the case, etc. You would never find these "flaws" or whatever you want to call them with a well designed piece of hardware. Overall it felt like a cheap built phone.

The AT&T store had a custom fitting screen protector that made the screen look like an old crt monitor. When I replaced my phone I didnt buy another screen protector and the display is pretty nice without it. I cant be sure that its more responsive without the screen protector as i have not put one on this specific phone, but its more responsive than the one I replaced.

Overcome owned a captivate and now own an Atrix. I loved my captivate and would probably still have it if it weren't for the battery life. It couldn't go longer than like 6 hours for me, the Atrix om the other hand has gone as long as 14h for me. I miss my captivates screen but ill trade that for battery life. And motoblur has been a non factor for me. But If you have a captivate and like it, I probably wousldnt get the Atrix.

See thats the thing, there are so many things wrong with the captivate including GPS and Battery and to be honest the reception is not all that great, and neither is the speaker, or speakerphone so I guess I have one of two choices get the Atrix or wait for the S2(and there is no guarantee Samsung will get their act together with that model either..)

i couldn't find a screen protector for mine
I'll chime in again. I said this on the forums for the cappy.
I would rather have a phone that works out of the box and is great than a phone that could have been great out of the box but was broken and required custom roms in order to make it just good.
The atrix has its issues, but compared to a captivate, it is solid and useable. I've given up my iphone 4 and my captivate for this phone and while it took some adjusting to daily routines, I am happy with the choice.

Coming from an XDAndroid (WinMo phone), to a Dream (G1), then to a Cappy, and finally to the Atrix- I must say I actually really like this device.
The email and calendar is actually really nice. It literally blows the captivate away. I am a business user, so exchange was a big one to me. The craptivate had really bad email and calendar support. The emails were plain text, non formatted, and replies were somewhat lame looking. The Atrix is legit in this field- it has HTML and RichText support. It parses HTML too so the emails come in properly. Very good plus. Also, the Blur sucked in my exchange info the first time and did it properly, which the captivate never did (always had to manually do it).
I went ahead and rooted and deodex'd, sideloading enabled, tether and webtop enabled. The webtop, I must say, is completely OVER RATED! I got it on there and was like, "wow glad I didnt drop $500 for that!". Even with as little support this phone has in the way of Dev (ATM), I must say I am really satisfied. I still have the cap to flash with if I want and I think the G/F is getting an inspire so that should hold off the itch...
The overall performance of the phone is very nice. It's snappy and I havent really found all that many bugs. The one thing I have noticed is occasionally the home screen will look like its in 16bit mode, but a touch of the home button it comes back to normal.

FWIW - One of the Atrix Reviews said the glass on the Atrix is Gorilla glass. If so, then no screen protector would be needed. Check the Corning website on gorilla glass - its is so tough that you can't scratch it with a coin or pen point.
Went from iPhone 4 -> Captivate -> Focus -> Nexus S -> Atrix. Atrix is my favorite so far. Just dont let all the nay sayers on the General Atrix section discourage you, 80% are trolls.

Although I admit the iPhone 4 screen is much nicer, the added size of the Atrix screen makes up for it in my opinion. I would rather have a SAMOLED over both of them, but I enjoy the Atrix more than my Nexus S and Captivate. I wouldnt call it 10 years old.

Thats a 10 year old cell phone

As was the iPhone 3g / 3gs

Im not sure about this either. my camera lines up perfectly as well as the speaker. While its not the iPhone 4 as far as beauty in build, i would put money on the Atrix being more durable. Its not two slates of glass, and with the gorilla glass its an added plus. On top of that the Digitizer isnt fused to the screen like the iPhone 4, so if you did crack it you dont have to spend $150ish for a new entire front assembly.

did you get it at a Best Buy in NYC? If so, which one?!?
Very nice ,that is a plastic shell still right?
yes at the Best Buy in NoHo. seems to be the only Best Buy around here that has the grey one right now. the back is indeed plastic, but it is a nice quality.. it almost does have a metallic feel to it with the texture. the rim around it is metal. build quality and display are excellent.. no creaks or looseness at all.. backlight is very even.. no leaks at all. blacks on the screen are nice and deep. and the screen doesn't seem to attract fingerprints much.
let me know if you guys have any more questions
ah you got the 16gb I believe...I am looking for the 32. Slim pickins for that model in one of the biggest markets on the official launch day. cant make this stuff up.

You haven't been paying attention to Apple over the past few years then. It's all about hype. I'm 100% convinced, shortages and delays are on purpose.
Look for lag on websites and using the keyboard on other sites/apps
Any loose panel near edges (Glass seperation) ?
Did you get the usb adaptor yet ?
Battery life ?
Any heat issues with back of tablet ?
WiFi issues if any ?
Connecting to computer issues ?
Best Buy at Columbus Circle (Broadway & 62nd) have the grey metallic back one, though I didn't check if they had 32gb too.
The grey metallic is absolutely sleek. I like the look and feel of it much better than the white (which I purchased last week and exchanged to grey today).
One small feature not oft mentioned in the grey is that the metal rim on the grey model is matte grey, not the shiny silver of the white. It's a small difference, but makes for a much more subdued and professional look (read: not ipad-ish).
The textured back (though plastic) also makes it feel better when you hold it in your hand, since you have the ever slight friction from the brushed pattern. Also, of course, grey less flashy and more serious (reminded me of other Android tablets like Xoom, Flyer, but of course, way way lighter!)
Form factor-wise, I don't think you can go wrong with the grey GT 10.1!
you think the grey looks better than the white after having both. i got the white on the 8th and really like it, but i'm returning it, and will be getting the grey from costco(only color they have). It looked sort of plain in the pictures and i tend to like a little more flash in things, hope its as nice as you say.
I got the grey version as well. The store gave me a white one by mistake. Good thing I checked it before I left.
The back is textured so it doesn't slip and slide around in my lap like the Acer did.
I also do not hear any squeaks while holding it.
Just called my local BB and they do have them in the store, but will not be displaying them until Sunday. Kind of a weird delay considering that it is supposed to be a hot new release.
Got the 16 grey one today. It's nice. My 6 year old want let me touch it. He's gaming.

i haven't experienced lag yet, and i've been browsing Engadget, XDA, New York Times, Facebook, and various music blogs. i did see a bit of slow down when i was on the Netflix site, scrolling down through my queue.. but that's only because i have about 300 movies on there.
i did notice when i was on the Market.. when i was trying to click on the Search, the keyboard took a bit to pop up. maybe about a 3 sec delay.

there's no glass separation or any looseness or creaks. my coworker has his Transformer here, and he's gonna return it after trying out my GTab, as his has creaking on the right side. he also noticed that scrolling through YouTube's home page was a bit faster and smoother on the GTab. everyone here at work is impressed with the build quality.. even iPad owners.

i originally wanted the 32GB, but they are nowhere to be found in the NYC area, so i just got the 16GB. having had a netbook previously, i only used up about 8GBs on that, since my music collection is about 24,000 songs - i have them on my external. so i really only store documents and photos in the internal storage. i haven't installed that many apps yet, but those shouldn't take up much space also. i just started using Amazon Cloud, so i will be testing that out to see how i'll go by day to day with it. i'm also looking into wireless externals as i've been meaning to get a 2nd backup for my music. Seagate has a very nice one. i figure, i could use that to connect to my GTab as well without the hassle of dongles.

Got a 16 GB white one today morning from BB.
Browser laggy on FB and other javascript heavy websites.

Not bad. Need to spend some more time to estimate battery life.
No
No issues. Wifi connectivity is actually very good for me.
No issues.
Got mine too.
Kind of fat, heavy, dull screen,...
...oh wait, that was my iPad
This thing rocks!
Got my Metallic Grey 16GB Tab. Loving it! My bestbuy had about 20-30. All models. Bestbuy wasn't displaying them though. Claimed they didn't know where to place them, even though they had a tablet section with just the XOOM and Iconia.
Anyway, I had a XOOM then an iPad 2, then an iconia, then an iPad 2, and now a Tab 10.1. And I think it's a keeper!
Thanks radiohead14 for the answers given. Return as soon as you can to post more information
more thoughts - the speakers are surprisingly pretty good for their size. and I recommend everyone to get Thumb Keyboard. IMO.. much better and convenient than stock. it splits the keyboard so you could easily type with your thumbs. I also prefer Dolphin HD browser - seems to be more stable than stock.

Nexus One - Coolest Androind Phone, One Year Old

Why does this phone have to be so cool? So many features most android phones nowadays don't have. Multi-color trackball, LED notification, sexy design... Gosh why does it have to be one year old I have a samsung vibrant, and while people say it is better, I disagree completely. I am hoping to pick a Nexus One up on craigslist for 180 (good deal?). Don't care what people think, this phone is rad.
HTC, Please make the Nexus 3, and please make it like the original Nexus. Beleive it or not, some people do want a multi-color trackball and LED notification. I would get the Samsung Nexus S, too bad it is too plasticy and is missing key features from the first Nexus.
Anyone else agree with me?
I agree completely.
Yea I completely agree ...
The trackball is one of my favorite features...
plus it feels to sturdy and it can handle a good beating!
I used to love watching the nexus videos on utube .... the nexus S came with nothing much.... no trackball and cheap plastic ...
It's annoying HTC doesn't put the trackball on any other phones now. I know a lot people don't want it, but I would love to have it Imagine the Sensation with the Trackball
I love my Nexus One so much I have no idea what my next phone would be. What I'd really like is for my next phone to be identical to my current N1 but with updated specs. It's now 1 1/2 years old now and still going strong.

I like the Nexus One is a very solid device here are things I hate:
1. Outdoor visibility screen just doesn't cut it on a sunny day.
2. Screen sometimes just doesn't work (nothing too serious but annoying)
3. Battery just gives up in 8hr (Like most phones )
4. Camera is nothing to die for, my 2008 Nokia takes better pics (personal preference I take alot of Pictures)
5. Internal storage sucks especially if you don't root or use alot of apps
6. Speaker isn't the best either.
I think for 200 buck is a super good device but you can find a G2x for 350 or less might be a worth it of a big rooter.

I mean do you ACTUALLY hate those things? Or is it just because the phone is dated and there is a newer (better?) standard?
Also, at this point, I'm not even hoping for a trackball-- I'd settle for an optical trackpad (if they'd even give us that; notice how newer phones *cough sensation* don't even have that?)!!
Although, a prominent and customizable multicolored LED is still an absolute must, whether it be around the trackball (g2) or separate from (i don't like that little tiny green hidden dot hidden in the speaker grill of the sensation- it's not noticeable enough.)
nexus 3 by htc..
second gen snapdragon
everything that the n1 has
qwerty keyboard
physical buttons + call/end-call buttons + camera shutter button
now that would be something..

Those are my main issues but I really really hate the memory space, battery and screen visibility especially on a sunny day.
Don't forget the Antenna. It sucks also. In my office I get the worst reception out of everyone. Overall I like the N1 alot and plan on getting the N3 when it comes out.
I get the best reception in my office, which I like to remind the fruit phone users about... xD
Reception is based on so many things through, that it's hard to pin point the real problem...

Well HTCs antenna technology sucks compare to Nokia and other companies. Having a HD2 with horrible antenna issues trying different radios/fimware/updates etc nothing help the poor HD2. the HTC wing way back in 2006 same issues and now the Nexus One has a decent antenna but my Nokia E73 gets solid 3g where my Nexus one fails miserably.
I love the trackball. At least the LED notification part. It's awesome to know if I have a text or a email just by glancing at my phone.
Too bad the Nexus 3 (Nexus 4G also) is going to have no front buttons at all, haptic or trackball.

Most likely the next Nexus. ICS will most likely get rid of all hardware buttons, like a honeycomb interface.
The texture of the Nexus One is the best. I dropped it plenty of times, forgot the phone in a washing machine once, had to replace the power source for it and didn't get the case to completely close. Yet, I'm still sticking around with it. Hopefully Google will do something right for Nexus 3 and get a similar phone out.

That's a Nexus S
I have had myN1 since the day it was released but it was replaced under warranty with a refurb a year later. I love the phone and haven't yet found one I would upgrade for but I do have the following issues:
1. The touch on the screen is still erratic making typing much harder than it should. I often have to power the phone off and on again to get it to register properly
2. My pictures, even on the replacement phone, still have a pinkish tinge to them. I am not sure why.
3. The power button is a bit flaky. Mine failed after the warranty had expired (of course) and so it cost me $55 to get it repaired.
I am hoping the N3 will be as good as the N1 but fix all those ills and be faster and more robust.
The amount of unofficial (and official for that matter I guess) support is what has made this phone amazing for 1.5 years for me. The screen sucks outside, and if I change between E and 3G anywhere in town while calling it is an auto dropped call, but there is not another phone that I've seen that's remotely tempted me. It has definitely been sturdy, dropped it so many times and only a slight nick on the top (no case or screen protector). And I still get questions from people when they notice its a N1, always with the follow up that they wish they had one.
I got the N1 when it first came out, rooted and installed CM right away. Been using CM since.
But lately, the phone is starting to show its age. I don't know if it's the phone or CM7 but it's been acting up more and more lately. I'm getting tired of it.
First is the multi-touch or lack thereof. I didn't care when I first got it but now, with more games available on Android, it's becoming a real problem.
Second is the random "crashing" where the screen would go black and the only way to see anything is hitting the menu button or go back and forth. Or just restart the phone to clear the problem. Really? is this windows or something???
Maybe it's CM7 maybe it's my phone but I can't wait to upgrade. Too bad there aren't anything good out there right now.
I really wish the Nokia N9 supports Android.

Is this a common problem with the N1? Because I've honestly never encountered this even once with 2 N1s.
I wish a new Nexus would keep the trackball, but they could update it to a virtual trackball like the Desire/Droid Incredible, but add a multicolor ring light around it. I think that would look pretty darn cool.
I'm having trouble sticking to android I love the features, apps etc but I been so paranoid of just buying a new android phone and a better one comes out a month after just sucks. I'm holding my money until I see the Nexus 3
