Start Over - Hero CDMA General

Have lots of newbie questions and here is another
I did a factory/reset from the recovery boot. I thought this would end up taking the phone back to the way it was the day it came out of the box but it didnt. It still has the Modaco ROM. ok - so now big deal but some apps are showing in my (+) soft key but not in market> my downloads. examples would be astro and apps2sd.
so Now I cant delete them.
2 questions - how would I delete those apps if I wanted to? Is there a way to take the phone back to the exact way it came out of the box?
Thanks for the help

To get the phone back to out of the box:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
Download and run on your computer the one appropriate for your provider.
Also, to remove apps that aren't showing up in the market: (from the homescreen)
Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications
Select the application
There should be a remove button (or similar)

2) i managed to find Email setup - but after deleting the files - i still have blanc shortcut in Start>Programs saying email-setup (with empty icon).
why?
can i remove only shortcuts but keep the program?
These things you wanna remove are installed everythime you hard reset. THey are programs in the extended ROM. These are customizations to WM5 that the retailer (imate, o2,qtek, t-mobile) put on the device.
If you don't want to install any of these do the following:
1. Hard Reset Device.
2. you'll go thru a series of screens:
2.1 Welcome Message
2.2 Align Screen
2.3 Tap and Hold tutorial
2.4 Password Configuration
2.5 Ending Screen that asks you to press screen to continue.
3. RIGHT AFTER step 2.5 (after you tap the screen) press the RESET hole.
This will bypass installing all the files in extended ROM which normally shown by a progress bar at the bottom everytime you do a normal hard reset.
4. Now you can Install the stuff in the extended ROM one at a time. Only the ones you need to install. To access the ExtendedROM (it is hidden) download Total Commander (search thru google) and type \EXTENDED_ROM in the navigation window and it will display the contents of the extended ROM.
I don't have O2 so i cannot explain to you what each individual .CAB file does. Just use a little guess work. THe O2Active, i believe is easily spotted. It's the biggest CAB file. Don't click on it so it won't install.
Tell me if this helped you out or if you need more clarifications.
Hola Jorge
First of all - Thanks for the great explanation !!
Although I do want most of the stuff, i already tried corporate mode (clean install) but I missed a lot of things.
therefor I installed Basic mode. (which hasnt got ALL the features)
But - some of the features i DO want to take away.
(NOT FROM EXT ROM)
only for now... programs in the Start>Program>
Lets say I wanna take the games away...
where are all the programs installed TO ??
I found some of them. but when I deleted the email setup for instance -
I still have an empty Email Icon in START>PROGRAMS>
(again i remind U - I wanna leave the ext rom as it is)
10x again !!
Some features in the ExtROM are installed in Corporate mode too, the sure way to customize is to bypass ExtROM, then install one-by-one the .CAB files you want.
Anyway regarding the Games, etc. they are part of the OS so cannot be uninstalled unless they came with the extended ROM like Backgammon that came with the JASJAR ExtROM.
To delete the ICON that is blank but still has text, go to \WINDOWS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\GAMES
You'll find the shortcut there. Or just to \WINDOWS\START MENU to see all the oter shortcuts in case you wanna remove other stuff.
The games are installed in WINDOWS and a shortcut is created to the Star Menu Directory. Just delete the shortcut.
What does "10x again !!" mean?

newbie : how to uninstall "standard" programs

hi,
i am a former palm user and proud new owner of a spv m600. i have been surfing around but still am a little lost.
how does one delete one of the standard programs delivered with the device. for example, orange has delivered internet explorer or zip. i would like to delete them and add a different program, but i do not see them in the unistall list.
how is it done ? thanks in advance,
scott
u cant, those files are in rom and belong to the operation system.
You can possibly
Check out this link. You have to do a hard reset first
http://wiki.howardforums.com/pocketpc/index.php/Selectively_Bypassing_the_Extended_ROM
Device manufacturers are beginning to place unnecessary third party software preloaded onto PDA's, the same way computers come from the factory. Unfortunately, this new software is often buggy and of questionable usefulness. Also, there is no clean way to remove some of this third party software once it is installed. The best way to keep it from making your device buggy is never to install it in the first place.
Unfortunately, since many devices have no way to edit the Extended ROM since it is locked, we need a way around it. This How to details how we can get around the Extended ROM by soft resetting before it gets a chance to install and then selectively running the cab files with a nifty little program called Total Commander.
1. The first step to selectively bypassing your Extended ROM is to download Total Commander from here:
http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.cab
You need to take this file and place it on a storage card on your device. You can do this by syncing your device, opening up my computer double clicking on mobile device, double clicking on My Windows Mobile-Based Device, and then Double Clicking on the Storage Card. Copy the CAB file there, but DO NOT INSTALL IT ON YOUR SYSTEM.
2. The next step is hard reseting your device. Since all devices are different, I can't explain how to do this precisely. On my Windows Mobile 5.0 device, I just goto Programs then tap Clear Storage, and watch the device reset. After it resets, the Windows Mobile menu will come up and ask you to align the screen, teach you how to copy and paste. When it ends, a Screen will come up and tell you that configuration is finished and tell you to tap to continue. Now pay attention, timing is crucial. As soon as you tap to continue, you need to soft reset your device before the device customization menu gets a chance to install. You don't want the extended rom to begin installing.
3. Now after the device hard resets, you should get the today screen. If you don't and you're back in the align screen section then you should complete it again and soft reset a little bit later than when you started. If it says device customizing then soft reset immediately, before anything gets installed. From the Today Screen you need to goto Start>Programs>File Explorer. In File Explorer, navigate to your storage card and run the total commander cab. Total Commander should now install. After it's installed, goto Start>Programs and open it.
4. Now type "\Extended_ROM\" (match exact case) into the location bar of total commander to make your Extended_ROM suddenly appear. From this screen you will see the cab files . Choose the CAB files you would like to install. You have now bypassed the Extended ROM. You have some choices now. If you are like me and don't want specific programs to install such as antivirus, skype and backgammon. Run every cab, but those specific cabs. They won't install and muck up your system and you will be all set. If you want to do research and only install the cabs you need you can do that too. Sites like XDA-Developers often keeps lists of all cab files found in device extended roms and what each file does so you can decide what you want and what you don't.
Hope this helps you out

Help removing an stuck item from start menu

I recently insatalled a slide tounlock and pinned it to the start menu. Didn't care for it so I deleted it. I didn't remove it from the start menu so It stayed as a dead shortcut. I tried reinstalling it and then removing it. It became active agian but there was another one as well. No matter what it wont let me "move" or get rid of that item. Any suggestions?
go to the windows folder
-> start menu
-> delete the shortcuts you dont like ;-)
problem should be solved... otherwise (I don't know what you exactly mean) go to settings
->personal
->menus
->tick the ones you like
For some reason that wasn't working. Kept giving me an error message "cannot move that item" . Wierd, like it was pinned to the menu perm. I appreciate the help. Total commander took care of it. Dont know why I didn't think of that before. I love that app.
If you use File Explorer you should be able to remove it. I used Resco File Explorer but had to tell it to show me .lnk files. That did the trick for me. I had the same problem.

Deadlinks??

Sorry as I surfed the whole forum and was unable to find any threads in regards to my problem.
So Memory card died yesterday for no reason. Went out bought a new one and its working.
Now as I previously had installed some programs on the Memory card, Opera being one, I have several dead links in the " Start Menu" "Programs" page that I can't seem to get rid of.
I have gone into Settings/ System and did the remove programs function on whatever I can, but the dead links are still there. And as for Real One Player, I can't seem to remove it from the remove programs nor the dead link in the Programs folder.
Wondering if anyone had any ideas in regards to helping me out with this issue.
Thanks
you first should start/settings/remove applications (or whatever it's called in your language, dunno mine is in italian) and try to remove the programs from there.
if that does not work, you should, with your file explorer, goto /windows/start menu and manually remove the deadlinks by longpress on the icon you want to remove and select delete from the popup menu

Reinstalling programs after hard reset.

Yesterday my phone locked me out, after charging it wouldn't accept my password & I had to do a hard reset.
Most of my utils/progs etc were installed to my memory card & I can use file manager to locate them & run them by running the exe file.
Is there any way of getting them onto the main screen without having to delete & then reinstall them - it looks like it's just the program shortcuts which haved been deleted.
Is it possibe to make new shortcuts & place them on the 'start' screen?
I read in a similar post that pocket mechanic might do something like this - would it, or is there another way?
Thanks.

future tip:
get spb backup application, and back everything up every week or so.
Nice one, thanks for the help both of you.
Search the net for a free program called shortcutcreator i think i got it from one of the pocket pc freeware sites. It does what your looking for scans your card for applications then creates shortcuts in your program folder.
