WM 6.5 Start Menu query - Touch HD General

After loading a number of apps I have tried to tidy up and reduce the number of icons on the Start Menu by making a few more category folders. This I can do but when I switch the apps into folders the icon also remain on the same page as well as in the new folder - which rather negates the point of the exercise. Oddly moving apps out of folders works fine.
Any suggestions out there? And I not sure whether this is a particular quirk with Dutty's ROM (Holy Grail) or just WM 6.5.

Create your new folder in /Windows/Start Menu/Programs for example a new folder called 'Tools' would be /Windows/Start Menu/Programs/Tools. Copy or create your shortcuts into this folder. Once in this folder check you have no duplicates in /Windows/Start Menu/Programs.....if you do, delete these

Fallen Spartan. Thanks for the quick response.
I think that is what I am doing but I end up with icons in both the main Start Menu plus in the new folder. Looking in file explorers the moved apps are only in the new folder not still on the main menu. I was hoping a soft reset might clear any "ghost" icons but they are still both there. Any further suggestions? Thanks

Dont copy them, make your new folder then cut and paste the shorcut you want from the root of the start menu folder to the new one

Raymond try this app sk shortcut manager, you get a free 14 day trial, if you still want to use it after that time you will have to buy a licence from here
http://s-k-tools.com/

That's fine now. The originial icons are disappearing from time to time - and not coming back. Bit odd really. (have realised that the phantom icons disappar from the mainstart screen when you you try to move them up or down ewith the context menu)
Second question if I am allowed that in one thread? No I have new folders anyway of customising the look of the icon?
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere the forum is so big it is hard to follow current posts let alone hunt for old ones.
Thanks again

RE-start is a good app to customise ur start menu icons/folders... check this thread for more info

You should have two programs in your \Windows folder, one called "htcPrograms.exe" and the other is "htcSettings.exe" These programs open the folder that is implied in their name, so if you create a shortcut to these programs it should work. Thay are down a bit.

Any Help
Without that htcsettings file I don't think anything will work. And I also don't have that file. I just know that I've tried making a shortcut to the "settings folder" before and no one seemed to know how. The problem is its not actually a "folder". It's something else. You can make shortcuts to the individual .cpls but not the whole "folder"... The programs folder is actually a folder so you can just make a shortcut to that but the settings is a whole other ball game. If you figure it that that'll be great!
Do you have the file \Windows\folderview.exe? If so, this works on my Touch XL to shortcut to the programs listing - icon list, just as if you press programs in the start menu.
Hey guys, these two shortcuts exist. Go to windows, it's not in a folder, but down below the folders. Use your sidebar and scroll it half way down. Start looking for those two. Their about 3 to 4 files apart from each other. Roughly in alphabetical order. After you find them hold down on them with your stylus and copy them to whereever your like to create a shortcut for them. i copy them both to my documents and had no problem creating shortcuts to both of them. Hop that helps. I tried posting a picture. I just can't get it to copy in this bo

what WM are you running?
am i missing something here, or can't tmz just post those two files from his/her windows folder? it'd be much faster than going through asking people what ROM they're running, etc.

I'm some what new at this. I don't know what you mean by "post the files." I thought the picture showing the files in windows is what you were looking for.

Number of icons per row
Thanks - great applications.
In my regular settings, I have changed registry settings so that I get 4 icons per row (Horizontal icon spacing, vertical icon spacing). How do I do that for these programs? Is there a parameter I can pass to them? Or can your program read those values from the registry and adapt the display accordingly?
Hi, Guys, if you don't want to add any additional apps to your phone, here's the pure-shortcuts way:
Please check these two threads for more info:
In this thread ([Guide] How to create .LNK files and use parameters) you'll know how to make a full set of shorcuts for all control-panel settings items, and a ready-made set already there.
In this thread (Control Panel links and icons wm2003se and higher) you can also know how to associate those shortcuts with system icons.
Hence, for 'settings', just creat a new folder in \windows\start menu\programs\ named 'settings' and put inside all the control panel shortcuts.
Edit: The advantage of this wayis: You can map any single item of settings into the softkeys or a hardware button. So shortcuts become shortcut to your target within one touch.
For 'programs', just create a shortcut for the folder \windows\start menu\programs\ inside the folder itself.
Thank you egoist6 for Files
You saved me from HardReset
My problem was crushed manila and no settings shortcut in ROM, there is no htcsettings.exe , no settings.exe , no cplmain.cpl
thank you

small start menu

Hey, some time ago i changed some things on my HTC HD and one of those things is my start menu. When i open the start menu i see a list of smaller icons than you see in the standard start menu. In the beginning you only see the 7 programs that you want your start menu to show. But somehow i've changed my start menu which shows the following now:
Agenda
Messages
Contacts
Internet Explorer
Notes
Telephone
-------------
//Recently opened apps
App1
App2
App3
...
-------------
Programs
Settings
Help
The problem is, is that i forgot how i did this... So i was hoping any of you could tell me how i did this.. If i get the chance all also try to add a picture of my menu and the default menu, so you get a better picture of what i mean.

Using a file explorer, you can add or delete new folders to your 'Start Menu' folder. Name them like: Web, Travel, Utilities, System and Media. Copy relevant shortcuts from you 'Programs' folder in your 'Start Menu' folder to each of these new folders. You will need to use a 3rd party file explorer to unhide system files and rom files to see the pre-installed icons to copy them to your folders. These icons are '.ink' shortcuts. Also copy the entire 'Games' folder and 'Office' folder from your 'Programs' folder direct to your 'Start Menu' folder. Finally uncheck all checked boxes in Menus in Settings page. This will allow all 9 folders to show in your Start menu on your home page, where you can access specific apps much quicker. Remember each time you install or remove a program/game, you have to either copy the new 'ink' icon to your category folder or delete it.
You can also use utility apps like HDTweak & Advanced Config to change size of Start Menu
If you go to Start/Settings/System/TouchFLO you also can change Start Menu size

WM 6.5 Start Menu Utility Request

Maybe an app already exists that does this, but searching hasn't revealed anything, so...
It's easy enough to add new folders to to the WM 6.5 Start Menu by creating them in
\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
From there, one can copy/move individual .lnk files into a folder so that everything of a type would be there.
Is there a preferably finger friendly app that will allow us to create folders then sort .lnk files easily? Right now it can be done using Total Commander, but it seems quite laborious, especially if one is in the habit of installing new ROMs every couple of weeks.
An added bonus would be something that let us pick icons for these folders.
HComber is a WM6.5 app that does this. It allows users to change icons for different shortcuts/folders but doesn't allow the rearranging of shortcuts.
If you want to change the icon folder just place a .lnk to the icon/dll. For Example you have a icon in a dll called shine2.dll in your windows folder you would use this for icon number 18:
Code:
1#Shine2.dll,-18
Just use notepad to edit lnk files. Theres a tutorial on the forum somewhere if you want more information.

Customizing Start Menu?

There's so many icons in the start menu that it's almost impossible to find things quickly, is there any way to delete icons or reorder them? I went through a file explorer to look at the start menu folder and everything is organized nicely into folders, but when I go to the start menu on my phone everything is just thrown together.
I completely agree. The new start menu's in 6.5 are terrible. Everything is all over the place at least Windows 6.1 sorted it into alphabetical order. Can't believe you can't customise it apart from moving things from the top to the bottom and vise-versa. I'm thinking over going back to 6.1 just for this reason alone. Unless I'm missing something
yeh I just got spb mobile shell 3.5 running on 6.1 and it's great that you can override the start menu... a few have it running on 6.5.

Unfortunately only method is to press and hold on each icon and move it to top or bottom of start menu which is a major oversite by Microsoft and a pain in the a**e!
I do however believe there was a thread or solution to this by modifying a certain path in the registry. I'll see if I can re-find it and post it later
This is a bit long-winded, but it really does help.
Open file explorer and go to...
\\My Device\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
In there, create category folders, like "Internet", "Utilities", "Media" etc..
Then, cut and paste the shortcuts into those folders.
It ain't perfect, and it takes a while, but once it's done, it really does make a big difference to that pile of poo they call a start menu.
Because of the fluster cuck of a menu, I decided to just go with wisbar's cascading and expanding start menu...What I really like about it as well is that it gives me a battery bar at the top, so I never have to guess what % I'm at...
I know that Energy ROM organize the StartMenu very well.

Start Menu Icons - Location

Hi All,
I've added a couple of folders into my HD2's Start Menu and sadly they resemble the old folder icon from 6.1.
Is there a location of the images for the stock folders? I noticed there is an "icon.ink" in the Games folder, pointing to:
"shellres.dll,-8229"
The other folders don't seem to have this shortcut in them, but they have the 6.5 (or Sense?) style icons also.
Does anyone know the location, physically or within the .dll mentioned above for the other folder icons?
I'm using Total Commander, so if that misses the other folders' icon shortcuts, please let me know.
Custom icons of folders and files in Start menu are assigned with string "Icon" in corresponding keys here:
HKLM\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start

So if there is a stock icon in your start menu, you can look its location and copy it for your new folder.

Right, Ok.
All Icons changed and a few menus reordered. Thanks for your help!
I forgot to mention that you can also use software to make it easier. I use JWMD (search it here, I can't post a link) to reorder the icons. As for icons, I saved my customization to a .reg file and import it every time I do a hard reset.
By the way it is very comvinient to gather all the preferences into one .reg to easily restore custom settings after HR. I dump entire registry before and after changing some settings and compare the two .regs with my svn client which has a good tool for looking difference between two text files. Offtopic, anyway, but I'm happy with my "idea" and hasten to share it.
Glad my reply helped.
