Cliq Update.zip - Android Software Development

Anyone who recently baught a Motorola Cliq and it was not fully updated when you baught it. Check your /download/ folder for an update zip. If you have one email it to me. I'm working on a root
Mods you can delete this if you want but this is the only place I can go for xda devs that got cliqs.
*Edit* I got a website devoted to the rooting of the motorola cliq, **NEW** Link

Moved to the appropriate location.

Was there EVER a cliq that wasn't fully updated? And I'm also trying to root the CLIQ... I added you on Google Talk if you want the recovery keys...I don't have the time to compile or test them right now....

By mail? Here I got my hands on the "DREAIMG.NBH" of BLUR....gonna see what I can do....RSD Lite(Still have it from my RAZAR days) reads it,but doesn't see the CLIQ. I'm "flashing" it to an emulator to see if I can get the contents and repack with root.

Does anyone know of an ongoing effort to root the Cliq?

I'd like to toss my hat in the ring if anybody needs a guinea pig.
I've tried asroot2 and some of the other Behold2/etc. rooting guides, but when I run this:
./data/local/try3 /system/bin/sh
I get this:
[1] Killed ./data/local/try3 /system/bin/sh
And nothing seems to work.
thats the same thing we get on the droid with this. Might want to check other forums, as most people that get the cliq are not gonna check xda, at least i wouldnt think they would. The owners of the Droid have our own forums now, as well as a couple Google waves on the subject of rooting our device and an irc channel.

was going to start a thread to put the link for the source code, but since you already have it, i'll put the link here for other people to stumble across.
https://opensource.motorola.com/sf/frs/do/viewSummary/projects.cliqdext/frs
I'm not to familiar with linux or source codes and such. But someone had mentioned in another forum I came across that the source code may have a clue about gaining root. Maybe its in how the programing would interact with the SPL? Does the O/S need some kind of permission from the SPL to run with the hardware? It is the SPL that is blocking/locking down root right? So if the OS needs ROOT to be able to run, then shouldn't there be some code in the source that ask's the SPL for permission for root? And if so, once we have that lil' bit o' code, it can be ran via a script and/or ADB? Like trick the SPL into thinking its the O/S asking for ROOT?
Many of us do have the CLIQ. I would be more than happy to be both a guinea pig as well, and donate $ to whomever can figure this out. The extra RAM on the CLIQ and the glass screen make it so much nicer than the G1 + MyTouch, pending it ever gets rooted...
http://droidle.org/?p=208
I've been trying to follow the CLIQ root as closely as possible.
Drew
im so with this guy i need apps to sd on my click lol i think we all do my internal memory is [email protected]!!!! im excited to read on !
state of the root address, AFAIK
A guy has an image the equivalent of the dreamimg.nbh used to root g1s recovery mode looks for this file and will apply it if found automaticly.
He said its rooted and ready to run, the difference is with the g1 we had the developer keyset which we replaced the original one on that came with our phones so they would ignore OTA updates (since the keys don't match) and so they would take updates that are signed with the PUBICLY available keyset the OTA keyset we don't have...
So to get to the problem, the rooted update can't be applied unless the "moto keyset" gets leaked or a developers keyset exists and it is possible to change it with the secured version of fastboot, which it seems is also the reason goldcard exploits (and others) didn't work.
Does Moto offer a "developers" cliq? Id assume not or we would have the keyset, but I dunno if the keyset is unavailable or if there is a problem in using the key to sign the package?
Anyway that's how I see it with all the searching I've done about this topic, I would also give up all the blurbloat for a stock cyanogen googglyfone.

I've run into two people who have rooted thier cliqs using this guild. one attempted to unroot to enable OTA for the 2.1 release, the other rooted and tried to update the radio via the moto update.zip
both involved the moto update.zip
reroot your cliq, defang the moto update.zip by removing recovery.img and boot.img from the zip file before flashing, all worries should be gone.
new radio witch addresses the clock conflict and keeps your cliq rooted with recovery

we have now had a few users out there who have rooted their Cliq, and apparently there are a few ways of going about the process. the link below will take you to theDudes post, and im sure you will find other individuals with other methods if you search through the thread.
good luck to all who wish to root, and happy holidays to all!

As i do not have a moto cliq in my possession i would not be able to tell you if this is true or not. but to any users out there that DO have access to a Cliq, and are willing to test this. (just in case someone out there hadnt seen it)

Its true. I have a Cliq and I rooted it last night. There are two methods to root. One is by Demoshadow and one is by TheDudesAndroid. Both seem to be based on the same idea. They came out about the same time. TheDudesAndroid is actually a little easier to do and the files can be downloaded faster. You posted TheDudes version here. Here is Demoshadows verison just to be fair. Demoshadow's Root
Wonderful news for CLIQ users, I hope milestone will get rooted soon
Yah, its true, and apparently it will work with the Dext as well. Its STILL very raw though. And could possibly brick your phone. May be best to wait a a few days for it to be cleaned up and tested more. Still some risk with it. No flashable update.zip as of yet. Also, they are working on porting Cyanogen's Rom to the cliq and a Nexus One rom. And someone got the NexusOne boot screen running on it.
awesome, so its official. now we just wait for the genius' in the android community to "fancify" it, as they always do. props to all who tried this, and thanks for giving us a 100% positive answer.
does this also mean someone can port motoblur to the g1/mytouch easier?

This root proccess is different from what we are used to. I actualy rooted mine last night. Spent some time following the M3 forum for awhile and it was no easy task. If we were all "genius'" here why weren't we able to do it? I'm not trying to bash but we need to work together on this and not make anyone feel inferior.

The root process is quite different - and I think that there is a lot to learn from the original thread http://modmymoto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=525915&page=35 starting ~page 35.
The method to flash a custom image was put together by Skrilax_CZ and was the crucial breakthrough for the device. TheDude got 'su' working.

update firmware, OS to froyo for moto cliq
Hi good afternoon, i would like to know something about the upgrade of the moto cliq whit 1.5 to 1.6 or froyo 2.2, please somebody. Help me with that. Thanks in advance.

We Need to Port the Desire ROM (once rooted)

I hope that once we have this rooted, we will be able to flash the Desire ROM. I'm sick at my stomach knowing that we are missing the wonderful News (RSS) widget and even a few others.
The desire is not a CDMA phone.
Make more sense to just port the app you want and much more realistic.
sure. if someone can port a widget.
Could you modify the ROM to work with the Qualcomm CDMA processor?
If you root it you won't be able to get the FROYO 2.2 upgrade. Can't be installed on rooted phones.

If we had root, and if we could write to /system/, then we could push the widget to the phone and be done with it. It should not require a whole ROM port to accomplish. We already have the file (com.htc.NewsReaderWidget.apk), however we cannot install/push it to the phone.

A rooted phone might be locked out from an *official* update to 2.2, but the community would have that sorted out in a matter of hours once there was an official update to build off of. Anyways, until we do get root, that discussion is pretty much moot.
Thank you! Can't wait.

If there's an apk floating around, why couldn't it just be installed?
Also, rooted phones can run 2.2, I have no idea where you're getting that from.

Because you cannot install some .apk without permission to write to /system/app/ which we do not have. Want to try? It's attached. You will get "Application not installed" and if you try to adb push it, well, where are you going to put it? You cannot write to /system/app/ and you cannot write to /data/app/, so if you know another way...

Of course they can run it. First of all, it was another poster who said they could not -- and they didn't even really say they couldn't 'run' it, just said unambiguously that they couldn't install it -- which in hindsight was probably referring to the same manual update engadget discusses, linked below. Second, my suggestion that the upgrade *might* not be *officially* supported on a rooted phone was just a logical possibility in my mind when I said it, but may have actually turned out to be the case:

Does a simple root allow the user to uninstall applications?
Here's another one.
Does the latest OTA root method require a previous root.

A. If you're referring to unrEVOked(2) and the preinstalled sprint apps, then no, i don't think it does. Sprint apps are not in "user-land" and i believe require NAND unlock (full root) to uninstall.
B. No, you can do this with a stock phone with the OTA update installed.

Its the fact that the OP said "HTC root is finally here." Its not finally here, its been here for a long time.
No one is passing judgement, we are just saying root is not new...even for .7. That app might be new, but root is not.
P.S. if those 100's of Hero users running .7 had read XDA, or done a simple Google search, they would have known you can root. .7 hasn't been out for 6 months, so you could have used Androot.
At any rate, enjoy your rooted phone.

Exactly. I've been playing with rooting devices since I had a HTC Mogul running WinMob.
These one-click solutions are nice and all but are usually the polish to an otherwise multi-step solution that has been around for quite a while.
But it worked with the ROM you would have had 6 months ago when you said you started searching.

if so i would say go to theimpaler747 thread for cyanogenmod Q&A, the OP is VERY helpful. I used regaw's root and my freind as well, worked fine for our heros, reread the steps just to make sure you didn't miss anything.
I tried all these one click solutions on mine with the .7 upadate and they didn't work. I looked around for hours like most noobs do before they post... and the only thing that worked for me was to run the RUU to get it back to basics.
So my little first contribution/suggestion, if it's worthy, would be to note in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572) where it says .6 underlined, to read .6 and above .7.8.9..ect.
Good luck to the OP.

There is the Easy Root thread, works with .7 and takes 5 minutes.
I ruu'ed back to 2.1 and then accepted all the updates and used superoneclick it worked.
None of the one click stuff worked for me. Trying to get http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 to take and everything worked accept the "Superuser Permission". I'll try from scratch in the morning. Point is, for me, the one click stuff didn't seem to work. At least the manual way is a step in the right direction. Remember to load the older 2.1 in the second thread.
Good option though FISHVENOM
