6.1 Topaz units for the UK - Touch Diamond2, Pure General

Many, many online stores are still receiving 6.1 OS Topaz units despite 6.5 being out. Only Clove.co.uk claims to have the upgraded models. Can I believe this claim considering no one else has ever seen the new units?

Consider that 6.5 has been out for only a few weeks, and that large suppliers will have stocks of popular devices.
6.5 WinMobile devices would only be brought into stock and sold when 6.1 has been fully sold out, otherwise people would try and claim a discount for having "older models" despite there being absolutely no difference between them that a simple software upgrade wouldn't fix.
It's all about the money

Yes, make perfect sense for business. For us consumers, this delay is holding up choice as to where to shop for the best price.
I know is easy to upgrade, but if getting new, why not start with completely new and to me, waiting any longer is starting to feel like a lifetime!
Cheers.

The upgrade gives you the same phone, it is hardly a delay to shopping for one that they don't yet come with 6.5.
Perhaps Clove is opening the box and upgrading them?

Where I can buy a HTC Shift, new in box?

I'm in China,I'm gonna buy a new shift, but it doesn't release in Chinese market yet.....Someone could recommend somewhere I can buy it?I can pay it by paypal.
And I have a question about the GSM,is it possible to make a call via.HTC Shift?
Regards,
Brose
the shift seems to be unreleased yet ... but could come very soon.
I have found a new piece of information on the Expansys site :
http://www.expansys.fr/p.aspx?i=154231
It seems the it will comes at the end of the month ... and I think that France will be the first country to get the Shift. I'm waiting here in Belgium and all the stores do not have any information about the release date..
About the phone options .. if you look at the HTC site in the Support tab, you'll see that SMS are working but not the phone (by default). But here we are pretty sure that we will be able to make it able to make and receive calls... but we have to wait to get some devices to be sure about it.
I hope I have fully answered your questions.

In fact HTC Shift is already in some countries. But they are kept with the distributors they are not allowed to pass it on to the shops yet. The reason is because they wanted other shops around the world to compete fairly, rather than speculate on it.

Just like all of us they have been very optimistic in their assumptions for a delivery date.
And time after time they delyed it...
But as you mentioned, we will see...
on expansys, the release has been push back once again, man.....i guess i will need to contact my HTC contact to find out when they are really going to release the Shift.
It's not that they are spoiled by unrealistic delivery date provided by expansys. They are actually lying every month by saying this thing is available now... from official PR! and since last october. I understand a company meeting a last minute problem before going on the production channel, but this announcment where done knowing the production was not going, as there is an estimated 2 weeks between the first unit produced and the actual delivery.
That or we have some kind of war going behind the scene between HTC and some other company.
great work ! they lying again! it's ok for me ...i buy an asus r2hv , i can't wait .....time is money , no? for htc maybe not. stupid company!
I can hardly believe that I too am falling into the trap of posting about HTC Shift availability. But here I go.
Clove technology www.clove.co.uk a company who have been trading since Psion days told me that my pre-order of the HTC Shift can now be executed and that first stock is due Tuesday march 04th 2008.
Well since I've waited about 1 year now since the CES display I figure I can wait a few more weeks and see what the reports from this forum will tell. Personally I feel that unless it shows all of good performance, full WM6, GPS, and usable data via SIM we might all be better off waiting for the HP2133 (see http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/hps-umpc-2133-revealed/ ) a product that is surely not going to be a year late.
Hey i found this on the internet, i don't know if it is true or not but the link states that the Shift is now for sale in the UK

Just got confirmation that my Shift was shipped (from Devicewire)

Dear All, i am glad to inform you all that the HTC Shift is finally in stock for order, looks like the wait is finally over. I am getting mine tomorrow, hope you all get yours soon !

I am hesitating so much between the Shift and this, above mentioned Fujitsu p1620.
The short battery life. No entry in WM without a SIM card (not even WIFI?). No WM that can use the harddisk or SD slot.
The whole WM seems so useless now. I wanted it for long battery life.
Hardly any harddisk space left to bring my favorite films for looking at in the plane.
The P1620 on the other side may take another x months to wait for and is much, much more expensive. And SD cards to carry my films become bigger and cheaper.
My Bucharest dealer just sent me an interesting offer (4397 RON = aout 1170 Euro all in)
I could pick it up tomorrow!.
PLs help me with my decision.
I am a frequent flyer in the cattle class, so I NEED a small tool/toy. I NEED long battery last, but could buy two of course.

P.s. I think that I buy the Shift now and sell it on this forum cheaper if I go for the Fujitsu later. But still.......

B"H
The Shift is now available in the USA, here:
www.onthegosolutions.com
Also, it can be shipped internationally, too.
I wasn't quite sure what you meant that it would take x months for the Fujitsu, the 1620 is available, and has been for a while I think. The U1010 is the one that hasn't launched yet.
If a lot of your use would be on the road, you have to think about battery power for sure. I think the HTC Shift has quite a few drawbacks, but I'm personally buying it because I have fallen for it, and I gotta have it :-D I hope there would be an extended battery eventually, but HTC's choice of battery pack and implementation is going to make it hard (I'm sure some third party manufacturers won't miss the chance and would come up with a new cover etc.) I have a 32GB USB and a 16GB SDHC, so hopefully with these two I could remedy some of the issues with low memory capacity on the Shift (I'd rather move the backup to a USB stick if that's possible, but should be).

I'd reply and tell them that the standard Shift does not make phone calls, and ask them what has been changed on this one to allow it.
Edit - I've just seen they are offering them for US$ 415, that alone should tell you not to go near it.
i already did, and am waiting for the reply, see i have seen iphones made in china that looks exactly like the original but with cheaper branding quality, otherwise functionalty is similar with motion sensore and everything, by replacing the battery cover which has the bad quality branding no one would know ots chines except when u go to the games and find a game called sushi and its all in chines , my point is those people are more than capable

I know this Iphone clone you are talking about. Its called HIPhone. I totally disagree here, its a piece of junk.
As pantaloonie said, dont go near Chinese stuff...
Btw...the hiphone is very limited, doesnt feature 3G and the motion sensor doesnt work. Internet is not supported either...you can buy them here in Japan for 200 bucks...if this Shift is a clone (which i hope its not), then I hope they call it S*H*I*T
anyone brave enough to order one from that site? =D
forget that, the guy disappeared after i asked about more details but what about a solution of gsm modem than can dial, wouldn't that solve the problem temporarly, i mean u will then have to use vista side all the time but i have seen gprs modem that can dial
Dont buy chinese phones for actual, buy it for novelty. I bought a "hiphone" and it sux. its 20% of what the iphone is. The icons does not respond as well as the iphone, no 3g support, not much functionality. All it is, is a working toy phone. Its cheap.. I bought the mini hiphone for $75, BUT STILL NOT WORTH THE MONEY. Plus the 1 year warranty does not work, they will have you pay for shipping round trip and if their post office lose your plackage, they wont pay for it. I sent one back and I had to complain to the Chinese government for this fraudulant trade practice.
hehe, funny stuff. There're no fake shifts in China. The demand for the real ones isn't great enough to warrant a fake one. I will however state that Chinese business is very much "tell you what you want to hear" and then let you complain about it after the sale is made. So, if you ask if something is exactly the same, they'll tell you it is, because to them it's what they call "cha bu duo" which means "pretty much". But of course, what's pretty much to the seller is far from for the buyer.
I hope that gives any future buyers a realistic picture of how things work in China. I live in China, and I know that if something sounds too good to be true, it's because it IS too good to be true. You get what you pay for in China, just like you do in another country.
Now memory cards on the other hand... well, get those in China, they're cheap, and they REALLY are what they seem to be.
Caid.

hi...just an input....if u wanna buy from www.made-in-china.com ,
make sure you are buying from a platinum/gold seller. i have bought stuff from there in bulk.. i must say that if they say its original it is... for the first shipment. second /third shipments will have some problem sets. alot of major companies either make sets there or does trading there as as certain parts of china are sort of like trade hubs.
this is my honest comment on them.
but i feel that they have made a big step forward in the sense that they are improving in the way they do business..(if you compare 5-7yrs back and now).
be it the merchandise quality and trustworthiness... NOT ALL but some
btw i am not from china nor i work for www.made-in-china.com
i am not even chinese
cheers!
it really was.
i have got a shift on July. it can make phone call by speaker.
but regretfully, it can not make a video call. i tried to install 3G videoTelephony, but it is not used.
And SD reader can not used in winmo yet.
The GPS can not used in win7.
i can not read the disk in winmo.
The ROM is windows mobil 6.1 professional 5.2.20764 (20764.1.4.3)
I think that you should verify the company and buy your product. Because few days ago I was buy some electronic product from Chinabuye.com supplier and has great facility and free shipping service. I have checked my all product than It was ok for me.

To Caid444 "There're no fake shifts in China." (sorry I can't manage to include quotation here).
Just now I'm playing in "chineese roulette": I have payed 103$ for a Chinese HTC Shift and I'm waiting for a delivery. I guess that for such a price there should be a cheap mobile navigator in a Shift box (photo shows the original Shift!), but I'm still mysified.
I have an original HTC Shift and I hope that there should be at least some compatible spares like screen, keyboard and battary.
If anyone is interested I'll compare the fake with the original sample and publish here the results.

I bought a new HTC Shift from a GSM Shop in the Netherlands for 100 euro's in 2009. They are not that expensive anymore as they were and all stock are leftovers that the shopowners want to dump.
Now I expect it to be even cheaper because of all the tablets that have arrived that are more powerfull then the Shift, have a more modern OS and enough memory to actually run software on it.
I order my products with Chinabuye, much better than with what I experienced with made in china. they have on time delivery and easy payment via Paypal.
no no @ say no to made in China
Made in china isnt reliable site when you are going to buy something big in price and size @ i mean scams and worse shipping service !
instead of that i use Chinabuye for better products' quality !

well, you get all kinds of suppliers at made-in-chine. i guess it beats alibaba.com anyway, 'cause when you google the page name you get nothing but scam warnings and stories about people who 'bought' the new iPad for 19.95$ manufactured in China... and got a set of toothpicks instead.
but I would recommend using business searchers like momoway.com who offer the same services but seam to be more reliable.

HTC HD2 breaks free in the T-Mobile USA wilds $199.99 on contract ($449.99 unlocked)

found this What do you think" here is the link.... http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/08/htc-hd2-breaks-free-in-the-t-mobile-usa-wilds/ and here...http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/02/htc-hd2-and-moto-cliq-xt-pricing-revealed-in-t-mobile-database/
Ok, so
I've been a WM user back since CE 2.0 and currently am carrying a T-Mobile Dash and a Toshiba E805, so I'm ready to upgrade the two of them into a HD2, but am curious about the potential for this thing. I don't want to be locked in to a EOL (End of Life) item from the start, and am willing to wait a few months for WM7, but in reality with all the purchased software I own I doubt I'd be happy losing it all and starting fresh with WM7. I'd tend to go with a different platform, maybe a N1 or an (gasp) Iphone but my problem is I'm a hopeless tinkerer and techie so I will definately NOT be happy on a closed platform.
Although I'm not a fan of M$ the CE/WM platform is amazingly open and compliant to my wishes, although the 32 process limit has been a nightmare, I've been pretty happy with it. The E805 with 640x480 looks and performs great, I have a larger battery so I can run it pretty much all day.
Oh, I'm currently using T-Zones and really don't want to pay $30 for Internet on whatever I get.
So my question to you folks who either have a HD2 already or know more about this than I is should I get the HD2 at the end of the month and live with the platform for 3-5 more years, possibly with vendors limiting support, seeing lots of new stuff come out for the newer platforms that will be there, or should I wait for this market to flesh out and go for a new architecture?
Thanks,
Marc

you're thinking about it when it's sold at THOSE prices?
I am deeply offended, admitting the news are real.
I cannot tolerate that on 21st january I had to spend 440€ on this phone, one-month used by another person (plus everything else I had to buy on it, totalling 500€ roughly), while it's being sold NEW in the US, unbranded, with 1GB ROM, officially supported 576MB RAM, an included 16GB microsd, for what is the equivalent of less than 330€.
It's like stepping on users' money.
I am not among those complaining about "newer hd2 with more rom", but I am sure as heck furious about it being sold, new and with better bundle, for roughly 25% less than what I payed my used phone less than couple months ago.

well, that is just the nature of the beast. you don't even want to know what i paid for an xperia x1 when it first came out and what it sold for 3 months later. or my iphone and what it sold for 3 months later
nothing you can do about it. either buy it right away at the higher price or wait it out. what you are paying for is the early usage of the device, sucks but that is just how it goes.
I guess my main problem with this is with the announcement of WM7 support for this beast will wane. I can get a N1 or an Iphone which AREN'T new platforms, will have lots of support, and likely get updates for a long time. The HD2 (which I've been waiting for almost a year for) has great hardware, probobly a bit better than either of those other two, but is it worth it to lock my self in to obsolescence?

Just wondering...

No important question, just wondering if anyone knows what happens with the unsold phones?
I guess not every X10 or other manufactured phone is sold, so what is SE doing with the remaining phones, and i think there are a few.

They are warehoused until a store runs out of stock and orders more.
that is not what i wanted to know.
now the x10 is a great phone but lets say in 1 or 2 years no one will buy it anymore, and i think that in the WAREHOUSE there are still quite some mobile phones left. I doubt that Se or any other mobile phone producer can make the exact number of phones they can sell. So the question is :
when no one will want to buy the mobile phone what will happen with the Phones in the WAREHOUSE?
- destroyed ? not likely ,pretty stupid idea
- gift to the poor people ? not likely,
someone?
Any device will only be produced in limited numbers unless they need more. That's why some places run out of stock and have to wait to get new stock in. The warehouse itself will only stock a certain number of units at a time and will distribute them accordingly.
Retailers will sell any device until it runs out, that's why you see "discontinued item sales" all the time. Once an item is discontinued from production, the warehouse will no longer be able to order it. Then they make sure they liquidate the leftover stock ASAP by offering rebates to vendors who order from them.
The short answer, the warehouse will likely never have phones left over that don't sell. They will just supply what's left until it's all gone.
thank you.
it is good to know

Lost my phone. Advice on new handset (insurance).

Hiya,
I lost my phone over New Years and am claiming on my insurance (which covers loss etc. I've read all the policy).
Just wondering if the HD2 is still available to purchase as this is the handset I lost. If it isn't I'll require a similar spec handset. Due to the 4.3" screen on the HD2 I think I'm pretty much limited to the HD7 or the Desire HD.
Don't know if I'll be able to get any of those though as I am unsure of the proceedure once the claim has been approved.
So my questions are:
Is the HD2 still available. If so, where from? (UK)
The screen size was the main requirement for picking the HD2 in the first place, so what else would I get with a similar spec?
Would the insurance company, in your experience, pay out for a handset of that value? I appreciate it depends on the company and what-not, but I'm pretty sure that I would get something of equal or above specification, right?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
I lost my MDA Vario III years ago and claimed on insurance, was a little disappointed to find I had to have another Vario, no chance of an upgrade. You may not get any option. If you are looking for a 4.3" screen, I would vote for the HD7. The WP7 OS really is slick and very reliable on my Omnia7, I assume the experience is pretty identical on the HD7, and it will only get better with updates later in 2011.
If you get another HD2, its no bad thing, Cotulla's new NAND Android Rom is fantastic, plus you would still have the option of sticking with WinMo or seeing what happens with a WP7 Rom port.
Too many variables to account for on this one but if the new device has to be of a similar spec or value you can include the dell streak in the listed options. It has pretty much the same hardware as the Leo but with a 5 inch screen and it runs android (let down for me but we're not talking about me)
There is every chance your insurance company will stump up a refurb HD2, that seems to be the norm in the UK, check the small print
Thanks for the replies, everyone.
If I do end up getting another HD2, I'm not going to be bothered. It's still a great handset and should do me another year until my contract ends. I was kinda hoping I would get another OS device though as my experiences with Android on the HD2 haven't been amazing (mainly the battery life and my lack of wanting to learn how to sort it out) and feel it would be a lot better on a native device.
We shall have to wait and see what Mr Insurance Man has to say.
Again, thanks.
