Games on the HD2 - HD2 General

A key feature that I'm hoping the HD2 does well is emulation. Running morphgear on my Touch HD worked alright. You couldn't really get audio to sync or work right and framerate wasn't that great either. Now with the HD2 you got multitouch support and better hardware, so it should be an awesome experience. Has anybody tried running any emulation apps on the HD2 yet?
Also the TG01 plays PSX games flawlessly check out these links:

Anybody test this out on the HD2?
I dream of being able to play PSP games on the HD2

FpSECE should run like a charm on this monster (also without any bluetooth gamepad due the enourmous screen size). I think there are going to be alot of capacitive-scree-like-games for windows mobile now also. Pfff can.t wait to get my hands on this baby )

If you think that most of developers are going to make capacitive-like-games for windows mobile when only one device support it instead of putting their efforts on games for the iphone and android, you are going crazy.

^^ Second that! Don't keep your hopes up for any Multitouch based games for atleast another year.
Windows Mobile 7 might change that. But till then, its no use dreaming

I remember when xtract (or whatever it was called was released), this was such a fantastic game and showed what could be possible on the WM platform.
sadly, the popularity of the iphone means that most developers are working on apps for that phone instead. The main reason behind this is that every developer knows almost exactly what he will have to work with on an iphone. With WM there are too many variations of screen resolution to consider, memory restrictions etc
in addition, the relatively high cost of apps on WM (compared to the thousands of 0.59p for iphone)means that they don't sell quite so many and the demand isn't there.
it's sad, but this is perhaps the reason that WM is dying as a platform.
I saw an article the other day that said that itunes had hit the 100,000 mark for apps. I think that's an increase of about 25,000 apps in a single year. WM cannot even get close to that figure..

Well, out of those 100,000 apps 99,900 are useless fart apps and such, not the kind of games we are talking about here. App Store allows you to sell whatever you want and since there's no return policy you can have people paying for your app, no matter if it is good or not.
This is not to say there are no great games for the iPhone of course! Yet the mere number of apps there isn't really an indicator of quality.

you're right ( I question your accuracy though )
but the point is, that people are spending time creating 'useless' apps for the iphone....very few people are creating anything for WM

I think we do need to make some difference between a big number, and quality programs... How many programs are not just total useless "fart" and other idiotic crap programs.
Its easy to claim that they have 100.000 programs, when most are close to useless.
SnooPPP:
You forgot to post a more recent one. This one showes the touchscreen in action on the TG01, with the overlay:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MHCQiT6e54
Its actually kinda playable just using a Single Touch Resistive screen.
A quick look at the forum of the FpseCE emulator shows that people are interested in the HD2.
People here question if its useful for developers to create games for a single platform. But, the specs for WM7 are know. They know that every device in the future will have at minimum, the same specs as the HTC HD2, to be compatible with the WM7 OS. So, for many developers the HTC HD2 will probable be a nice development / testing platform for the future.
Also, when looking at the PSX emulator, that now on a Snapdragon can play about every PSX game... This is a game library of? How many hundred games? Including hits like FF7, etc ...
What about the N64 emulator that they are porting for the openPandora project, on a TI OMAP 3430? When the source is released and recompiled for WM, you can expect to also that game library...

This is what im really excited about, FpSECE on the HD2 will be amazing, it just needs either multitouch support or we need a controller we can use with the HD2.

Well, why wouldn't they spend time? If you put a fart app in App Store, chances are, somebody will pay for it by mistake, and won't be able to claim money back.

In fpsece 0.1 there are overlays so no need for a controller(and it supports multitouch if I recall correctly).

Meh, regarding an entertainment perspective, I never really understood why games should be on phones. Sure the usual, patience or bubble breaker is nice, but if you really want to play games, I suggest getting an xbox360 or ps3, it's what I use mine for anyway.

Meh, when I travel, I don't mind carrying another device with me. Playing games on your phone only drains the battery even more, leaving less juice to make business calls.

That's a bit like arguing that there's no point in putting a camera into a phone because, when you travel, you don't mind taking a camera with you. That may be true as far as it goes; but having a camera in your phone becomes useful in situations where you didn't know in advance that you were going to need a camera and then suddenly realise that you do - conveniently, you just happen to have one with you because it's built into a device that you automatically carry with you at all times. The same applies to gaming on a phone: it's useful in situations where you didn't know in advance that you were going to want a gaming device.
You also have to ask: even if you are willing to pack a separate portable console, are you willing to pack a portable games console, a phone, an MP3 player, a mobile web browsing device, a mobile email terminal, a dedicated satnav device, and a portable video player? That's quite a lot to fit in your trouser pockets. There's a lot to be said for combining multiple devices into the same box.

You forgot to mention all the chargers too

It's not like chargers take that much space... it's just one small bag. Besides, nowadays there are these universal extensions and what not if I'm correct if you really mind taking multiple chargers with you. Furthermore, if you have one device which you use for everything, you're gonna need to charge it more often, while this is not the case when using multiple devices, just to make clear that having an all-in-one device is not as heavenly as it might seem (or you're gonna have to take ALL those multiple batteries with you ).
Also, comparing taking a picture and gaming with and on a phone is not entirely just, because when one wants to game, he/she has to sit down and put time into gaming, while taking a snapshot is almost instant. What I'm trying to say is that when someone is playing a full blown 3D game (which is what is actually discussed here instead of patience, minesweeper or whatever), that person wants to put in time to focus on the game. In this case it's much better to use a dedicated device and not some emulator on a phone to play ps1 games while draining your battery life. And yes, if someone wants to take beautiful high resolution pictures, that person will take a quality camera with him/her.
Eventually it all comes down to preference I guess...

No effence on the people on this forum who are making such nice apps and games.. Cause you guys rock!! and make my diamond look more amazing!!

iphone the world talk about. That's why it going to get more games than htc diamond. htc diamond is more for insider for fan. I have iphone and htc diamond. I use most of the time htc diamond. But I think iphone is better. Just htc has win mobile. Which I can have more prog than iphone. but it will change.

Irony...I love it!
Sorry but i would never pay for a WM Game. They are really crap. My girlfriend has the 2g iphone and i've got the diamond. I was rubbin it in her face that i was getting the best mobile phone(Diamond).I Was Wrong. But to be honest i'm really thinking of getting rid of it for the 3g iphone.
The games and apps on iphone are far superior. Graphics and gameplay! Plus there's loads.
No video calls on iphone. So what, video calling is probably the crappest invention. I don't know anybody that uses it.
Iphone has gps using Google maps which aint too bad.On the Diamond I have had a gps fix one and i've tried every Radio version. Could be where i live but iphone works here.
Diamond has a better screen resolution. GREAT! No not really. Crap how small is the screen. Besides the iphone looks miles better quality.
Don't get me wrong i love both phones. I'm not a h8r.
Just stating the facts.
One more thing.
If the Diamond was as stable as the iphone. People wouldn't have to spend all there time cooking roms instead of using there time to make Brilliant games.
Thanks for reading just wanted to have my say. Plz don't think i'm starting an arguement
You're entitled to your opinion doinbox and I respect that, but having tried both the iPhone 3G and HTC TD I'm sticking with the TD. It can do so much more than the iPhone. Here's just a few of its advantages, IMHO
Sync with my office documents,
Picture messaging
Video
Cut and paste
Swappable battery
Bluetooth stereo music (A2DP)
Has a higher, sharper screen res, which helps me big style.
A better camera
Physically it's also noticebaly smaller and fits easily in my jeans pocket,
the iPhone is quite big by comparison.
If I just wanted to play the arcadey style games on an iPhone I'd buy a PSP instead.
Blah blah blah.. iPhone vs Diamond again.. But you all are right. We need better games for our Diamond
Iphone
Hi there,
I don't see the issue of the initial poster here. There are far more games/apps (and by god better ones) available for Windows mobile and there always will be.
The IPhone is a peace of crap in a nice jacket and with s*** loads of PR thats wy it's popular but it doesn't make it less crappy. They make you pay for every little thing and in the end they will make you pay even more. If you want that then thats fine, i don't.

I hate to bring this to you because this is a straight out lie.
People make Roms because they like to fiddle around with OS stuff and to twink the hell out of it for fun, they don't do this because the Diamond would need it, a 1.93 stock rom runs perfectly stable and fast.
It is time for you to wake up and get ur facts strait. The Touch Diamond beats the Iphone in every way possible (hardware/software).
Just the fact that we lucky bastards can even change our own OS makes the Diamond superior over the IPhone in my book.

I'm Quite sure the biggest htc diamond fan in the world would admit its not perfectly stable and fast.
Didn't You read my post properly. I own a Diamond so i know from my own use its not stable. Funnily enough i just had it replaced today because it kept crashing on me. Even with l8st firmware.
I like the Diamond but i have paid for games and apps and none of them are better graphics than iphone games such as monkeyball or crash bandicoot kart or the fish app the water looks so real when you touch it. You post a link here to an app/game with graphics that good that would run on diamond and i'll hold my hands up and say i'm wrong. But i've seen and tried every game on wm6 and i know i wont be seeing a link from you.
Stop being so defensive over the Diamond everyone knows its full of problems. Well maybe not on the Hardware side, but WM6.1 is Terrible and nobody can deny that.

I won't go into a flamewar with you, if you like IPhone thats fine with me. I love my Diamond and i think its way better then the Iphone maybe the right software for it is getting there a bit slow, so what ....

guys, guys, what's the point arguing?
we all know there are people who adore iphone and there are people who wouldn't trade their touch xy for the world. these two phones are simply aiming each at a little different clientele, and let's leave it at that. otherwise it's just an ideological discussion...
as for the games, the thing about the wm games is that there are thousands of them, some better, some worse, but because (naturally) the majority of them has been developed for the wm 5 or even 2002/2003 editions, they're simpler than the new ones, with simpler graphics, worse resolution etc. and all iphone games are developed to utilize the iphone fully.
so just look for the newer wm6 / diamond games and stop complaining about the old games being crap. and remember, games are developed for wm platform, meaning also for weaker devices, not only for our diamonds
personally i know of multiple cool games for the wm6, e.g. teeter, ccsnake, worms world party, tennis addict, open transport tycoon deluxe, resco bubbles, bubble snooker, pocket bowling, etc...
doinbox, yphone has better apps & Games? Really, where? GPS is using google maps? Yep and that thing is actually completely useless compared to Tom Tom, iGO e.t.c. I wonder why apple included GPS in the first place.
Apps? There are none. And with the power of pocket informant, One Note Mobile, Word e.t.c WM beats iphone hands down.
As a phone WM platform is much more convinient. It takes less keystrokes and time to call somebody or send SMS|MMS\E-Mail.
The only thing where iPhone really shines is the web. Big screen+Safari is a perfect solution. Diamond and Opera don't even stand close.I don't thing even Touch HD will help. But unforunatly there is no stable ICQ client for iphone, yet.
So the only thing left out - games. But if u open your eyes and look around you will find enough high quality games for WM which use 3d accelerator. Just an example http://www.clickgamer.com/products/pid_5660/screenshots/ppc/large/ss2.gif
Anyway stop whining here and get an iphone

Hope Someone Can Answer This : Why?

an iPod Touch/iPhone can play 3d games, utilise the g-sensor and run smoothly - for example racing games. Tilt the iPhone, the car turns.
Why can't our phones run these sort of games? Or is it just the case they haven't yet been produced?
From what I'm aware a Diamond is more powerful than an iPhone therefore these games "shouldn't" be a problem?
Shoot me down in flames if I'm wrong, just kinda thought there should be iPhone-esque software for these phones now.
I am right with you, i keep thinking the same thing.
Because Apple has crazy fanboys and they provided a simple infrastructure to facilitate payment and downloading (appstore). They also gimped the iphone out of the box so as to pretty much require people to sign up for the appstore if they actually want to use it, ensuring that they have the user base they need for it.
Now the iphone has several million users - how many Diamonds do you think are sold? Windows mobile itself is bigger, but the capabilities of the phones running it vary too much that profiting from making advanced games is as feasible.
I have wondered about this as well. I think the problem is 3 fold
Firstly, the Diamond has 3d and graphics performance issues for sure. Sometimes my Diamond will slow down terribly when running some simple animations. I have read that HTC are notorious for providing poor graphics drivers and this could be part of the reason.
Secondly, I actually dont think Windows Mobile is capable of doing what the iPhone UI is capable of in terms of interactive gaming.
Thirdly, Apple provide your at home developers a great business model to go out and develop great games and apps for the phone. Plus with the Appstore they know that if they develop something good, people will see it - there is only one place to get apps from - and the developer will make money.
For me, the iPhone is not the right phone, but I would love Windows Mobile and HTC to be able to do what the iPhone and Apple can do.
The iPhone has v-sync, so the 3d graphics are drawn smoothly with no tearing and sadly win mo just does not. At least that is what my mate said who is a games developer. The power is there but you just can't get it to the wheels! This just makes it fundamentally unappealing to a lot of developers.
yeah totally agree, i love the diamond, but i've been using windows mobile for years now, and each new model HAS generally got better and better. however the iPhone is just something else.. for people who aren't nerds and into mucking around iwth their phone etc, i could never recommend a windows mobile over an iPhone. its just so much more polished compared to the diamond.
i'm an AMD fan too, godamnit why do i always have to back the underdog
Yes, even though i have a diamond and have had great fun tweaking it, i still can't help but envy the iPhone users for their graphically superior games and video playback prowess .
Another explanation would be that iPhone games are developed solely for... u guessed it, iPhones! ...whereas WinMo games have to be developed to run across many different devices, with (or lack of) accelerometers, touch screens etc. Therefore, to achieve this interoperability / compatibility across the many different devices, compromises have to be made.
That said, there are still gd games for our beloved devices, my favourite being PDAMill, whom develop aesthetically pleasing games with intuitive controls, and they're cheap too.
Nudge.
So all in all, will it become possible? And what's vsync? Portable to diamonds?
I think V sync is something to do with the way images are drawn to the screen, and it is just not implemented in win mo, I don't know if it could be written into the drivers or of it is a hardware thing, but then I don't actually have a clue what I'm talking about! Can anyone confirm this?
vsync actually makes bad performance even worse since it forces the back buffer to wait until right after a screen refresh before it copies its data to the frame buffer.
it's great if the device is capable of rendering an FPS that is higher than the refresh rate, but in the diamond case it's just another fps thief
if you want games like iphone get an ipod touch. The diamond never advertised gaming as a capability. Think of it this way: The iphone is like a mac with mediocre hardware but also comes with a mid range video card. The diamond/touch pro are like PC's with raging motherboard/cpu/ram combo, but bottom entry level video card. You can get a lot done with the PC, but the fun factor lies in the mac.
Go buy virtual pool mobile, it runs great and it's very fun. Its the best pool video game ive ever seen actually.
Simple reason
The reason to me is simple: Apple cares about user experience. Just look at win mobile contacts, or explorer. Do you think this software is made for 2008-2009 hardware? Now look at iphone's ones... Seriously, Microsoft has the power to make good things for mobile users, but they released win mo 6.1 one year ago, which is mainly the same OS that existed in 2003.
Silly we when we buy pocketpc running on windows mobile.
Just to revive a dead thread for quite a good reason..
I've seen a few videos on Youtube and also a few write ups on the wonderful Tinterweb in relation to Windows Mobile devices running and successfully playing iPhone games through emulation.
Is this just simple hear-say or fake ? I've been thinking for a long time about focusing simply on making the graphical capabilities of the diamond better through customising the graphics drivers. That's the main flaw for me.
According to a few posts the graphics card has 64MB dedicated memory.. is this right?
If so, these things SHOULD be capable of running bloody good games but the drivers are just nowhere near good enough. I did hear about changing to ATI drivers - is this right? If so, where can I find the info on this cause I would like to maybe bash at hybrid-combining the drivers and modifying them a bit as to allow maybe a bit more fluid graphics. If you check one of my other posts on the Diamond, I've been complaining about split-graphics. It's really getting on my nerves as I'd rather just see a full picture move around my screen fluidly. None of this "split it up" rubbish.
Cheers

Stuff that should have been released last year. The only reason Apple is releasing it when they are is because people's 2 year contracts are starting to expire, and Apple wants to try and persuade them from leaving by finally giving them features they've been demanding from day 1.
Honestly, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I knew Apple would do that.
Heres my question:
Smart phones and windows mobile operating system have been around for something like, oh, 15 years now. Why is it some EMO company like Apple releases a phone (badly I might add) and it becomes THE Benchmark for mobile devices? Its just purely unbelievable to me that so many people obsess over "well the iphone can do this, and it can do that.. I want my ______ to do what the iphone does..." If you like the turd and all its glory so much, why don't you just buy one and get it over with??
the iphone is so easy to use, thats why so many people bought one. when everyone has something, it becomes the norm to judge other things by. think of the model t from ford
Model T?
Confused.com. Is that the foreign (for me) Focus? lol
Anyways, I've looked about and the ATI drivers have given me the power boost I'm happy with. However - My images are still split on the screen.
Still trying to get this fixed...

the phone is expensive, and it seems that it's equiped with good hardware specs, but its performance is just sucks imo.
these are the things that disappointing me....
1, there is siginificant lag with regard to its screen responsiveness (and almost everything)
2, its camera function is quite hard to use, it takes about 3-4 sec to get a shot, and the picture is easily turns out to be blur if the phone/focal slightly moved/not in steady condition by the end of the shot.
3, the phone is also very easily to get overheated.
4, games for wvga version are really few as well as software; the only emulator works good for this phone is morphgear, but its fps is too low while playing gba and snes games and that is when sounds turned off... on the other hand, due to the fact that wm 6.x does not support multitouch, so there is really no point to use such emulators, cos even rpgs requires multitouch.
in additonal, I still remember that my original 8 gb sd card died after 2 weeks since i bought it, and the customer adviser told me that i have to wait for monthes in order to get my replacement which was really pissed me off.
actually, I have considered iphone as an alternative before i bought this phone, but at the time, it seems everyone owns an iphone and I want something different, so I finnally bought blackstone.
i'm not some crazy iphone fan but blackstone has been easily beated after I compared my phone with my friend's iphone; games on iphone look great and they have tons of 3rd party software and games, its gba emulator which is called gpsphone runs pokemon between 150fps- and 225 in full speed and when sounds turned on and etc....
I know there are certainly something good about blackstone(maybe wm device), but for the price, i think i will only rate blackstone 6 out 10.
whatever, I feel grateful to these chefs who cook ROMs for us, my phone has already improved a lots because of them, and I really appreciate that!!
but for me, I think I won't buy htc's phone anymore.....

why dont you try android there is alot of stuff for it
TC,
Based on what you're telling me (with gaming being a strong criterion), I strongly suggest you just get an iPhone or wait for the GSM-Pre which should be coming in about a month or two (assuming a next-week announcement).
I've been using the TouchHD for a while, and I can agree that the phone gets warm, but by no means hot, so how hot are we talking about here (I understand that the perception of heat is indeed a subjective one)?
And what exactly do you mean by "significant" lag on screen responsiveness? I honestly have not experienced that. Have you installed programs to the brim on your phone on the device memory? Do you actually close your applications? (If you have too many programs running, it'll turn into a tortoise). For the first week, my roommate had no idea that the X-button was not close, but a mere minimize on his Toshiba. He had a constant 10 ~ 11 applications running in the background!
Cheers.
Honestly, i would not buy an iPhone. it's a good device but it's for kids!
have you considered flashing a cooked ROM?
there are plenty out there in the Roms Section of blackstone, personally i prefer Dutty's ROMs, try few of them as most of them have updated Video Drivers which gives you a better graphical and more enjoyable experience.
let us know how things will go

Ozmoran,
I believe you quoted the wrong person. Lawl. Having said that, well, if he wants to have a gaming device and a phone in one, I guess that he is entitled to his own. But yes, usually, I'd say that Windows Mobile is for business/professional use. I highly doubt it was built for gaming.
Cheers.
everyday we have new roms, how about iphone????? i think hd has its own attraction. good luck!

oops LOL my bad.........
Just finished working it was only 4am in Thailand
It sounds like iphone is more suited to what your needing a phone for.(op) I agree that wm is more a business device with gaming as an after thought. I do like teeter if I'm stuck someplace and need to kill a few min.
The sheer number of awesome cooked ROMS and the options that brings to the table is what keeps me going. Never boring!
that's not my first intention to bring you down on blackstone, and I admit that gaming is 1 strong part for me, and I still believe that there are a lots of people out there have the similar feeling as mine.
cos I think generally, if a phone has good performance on gaming, than it should also perform good on many other things. e.g. with regard to pc, gaming pc can do everything that normal(i don't know whether it is the correct word or not) pc can do, cos it got better cpu and gpu and other hardware components.
and i think same things apply to a mobile device as well; people compare hardware specs carefully before they bought a new phone, what they do that for? i can't think of other reasons apart from gaming and strong performance, and I think they are always closely related to each other.
maybe i'm wrong on this opinion but before somebody refering me as kid or childish, show me examples of what gaming device can't really do in comparison to other business or professional oriented phones, and what the difference?
I complaint about htc is becasue I feel they contributed very little to my phone after I bought it, cos all the improvements i got are from these chefs who cook roms for us, and i already mentioned that in my first post on this thread.
on the other hand, neo2007 is trying to develop graphics driver pack in order to improve the graphics performance for our phone, i don't knwo what's the final results gonna be, but at least he is trying atm.
we paid alot to this phone(at least for me), however, what we get from htc?aren't the apps and games on iphone make our phone look stupid, they already got more than 10000 useful things in their app store(maybe even more) to make their phone better, but what we got? there are still a lots of software and games don't fully support wvga and etc..
and that just makes me feel that microsoft/htc does not pay great attention on our device and their phone users.

to some degree i agree with u...
for the price paid for this phone, it does NOT measure up to its 'standards'...
i initially was irritated all the time, but have gotten used to it now..
it's actually not dat bad at all... has good hardware, can be used to do alot of things with..
but not many good games are out there for the HD...
one thing that REALLY dissapointed me was the camera not having a flash.. cuz with the amount i paid for this phone the LEAST they cud have provided me with on the phone is a flash (which actually aint that much of a request to ask for, for such and advanced phone).. and of course the video taking.. both camera and video recording in the dark suck.. but otherwise i am satisfied with it...

[Q] Is the Xperia Play worth Getting?

I am very hesitant in getting that phone, I've heard alot of good things and alot of bad things
I've seen specs and I've seen reviews, but I want to know people's personal opinion as they have the phone for full everyday use and not just reviewing it.
Is it worth it?
My advice do not go for it,you have better options for the same price.even if you are into gaming do not go for it...you can wait for NGP later and get dual core mobile now like galaxy s2/sensation/optimus 2x
I say go for it 4 sure. If you're like me who loves Zelda OOT, buy it! There is nothing like sitting on the subway while kids are playing their angry birds on their iphone while you sit there with your play and play Zelda or tekken 2 It's totally worth it!
everyday phone? Oh yeah! It works great!
Don't listen to that guy talking about dual core. You don't need it on a phone!! seriously, WHY would you need dual core? Everything i've tried on my play works like a charm!

Yeah, get a dual core mobile now so you can play the exact same games you can play on the Xperia Play, only with worse controls and worse battery life.
Then get an NGP later so you can carry around two devices for ultimate portability!

^^^ I'm being sarcastic in my last post, in case the OP didn't catch that.
I'm very happy with my Play as a gaming phone and everyday phone. My wife has a Droid 3, and there isn't much difference at all, if any, in app performance and daily phone use. I have much better battery life as well. She has a better camera Maybe eventually apps will start taking advantage of multiple cores, but it's going to be a while.
You can't play this game on a touch screen very well...

It is very simple. How much do you value playing both Android-native and emulated games against the rest of features in a phone? If you really want to play games in a phone, this is your device.
If you don't value playing games over dual core CPUs, slick designs, gorgeous screens and feature-rich cameras, you're not the target for this device. It has a very specific niche, which Sony Ericsson has spent millions in digging out. It's a love-it-or-hate-it product, with little middle ground.
Oh, and it has an astonishingly precise GPS.
There are bad points about this phone but show me a perfect phone.
The best 2 things about this phone are obviously the control pad for 1 and the battery life, which has amazed me so far.
The only thing that I find annoying is the lack of decent games taking advantage of what is a great phone.
But I have to say I have started using emulators and they are quality, n64oid and fpse especially.
So to sum up its a great mix up between a gaming device and a smart phone. It is let down on the development side.
It all just depends on what you want if you like gaming I dont think you will be let down in purchasing this phone
Thats my two pennies anyway
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I have an xperia play and a few of my mates have dual core phones (SGS2, Optimus x2 e.t.c). I would not swap the Xplay for any of them.
As hairdewx has shown if you plan on playing anything with FPSE or emulators it is pointless on anything other than an xplay. The emulators alones let you play thousands of games with proper controls (makes it a 1000x better)
The speakers are the best on any phone. And the battery life is amazing to say this is a gaming device. Just using it as a normal phone it is as good as the rest.
I would recommend you get this phone. I think it will be hard for me to upgrade to a newer phone @ the end of my contract, unless it has proper gaming controls . (Xplay 2 hopefully)
Thanks guys I don't know I just might get it the only setback was the lack of an HD screen and the core issue but seems that the people who have the phone are enjoying it, I will see
Just wanted to give a perspective from someone who just bought the phone yesterday.
Waiting in the Verizon store I got the chance to mess with a few other phones. I actually played a couple games on some as well and just took an overall look. So to start lets forget the coolness of the control pad, and also that IMO playing games with motion/touch controls aside from something designed for it like Angry Birds absolutely sucks. Its why I seriously have not been into mobile gaming until now and I'm a big gamer. Just can't stand those controls.
Most of these new 4G dual core phones are huge. Seriously I was playing with one of the new 4G phones and the damn thing was like a doormat it was so big. Meanwhile the Xperia Play dimensionally is almost identical to my OG Droid, but space wise is designed better so that the 4" screen pushes to almost the edges of the device which uses space very well. Fits in my pocket WAY better than those 4G devices with a screen thats only 0.3" smaller.
Next up is speed. The OS is just as responsive on the Play as any of the 4G devices, I'm honestly not sure how much a dual core processor can help on a cellphone especially for normal every day tasks, with an OS that while multitasking, is not like a PC where you can physically have 2+ windows on screen at once. The way Android prioritizes memory, if you are using multiple apps at once, I just don't see there being a possibility of an everyday advantage. Needless to say, touch them side by side, there is NO difference in speed. Which brings me to games. I played a couple on the newer devices, they looked and played the same as on the Play, no faster, no better graphics, no nothing.
Finally would be features, ok so the camera is ok but not as good, 4G where available, is REALLY fast so thats nice as well and if you're in an area its common, and you have a need for that kind of speed, well then its something you should consider. And HDMI out, not on the Play. I personally have no use for it but if you do then theres another loss. So this comes to opinion - IMO the camera is good enough, it does the job, its a cell phone not a Canon. 4G? I live in the NY metro area basically where 4G service should be mostly available but its spotty, meanwhile WiFi is everywhere, and everywhere I'd sit and use it I have WiFi (my home, my folks house, my firehouse etc), when I travel I book hotels that have free WiFi, also my ISP provides open WiFi in many areas. Also I have no shame I use peoples open WiFi signals if I have to, so honestly I don't miss the speed there. 3G really isn't THAT bad either, however its a compromise, and I'm sure outside of this area it could be a problem for some. Then HDMI out, I bet I'd try it out for a novelty but I'd probably never use it. I have a PS3, I watch movies on my big screen from that or my PC with HDMI out.
And 2 things I've said above become an advantage for the Play, no 4G and no Dual core = better battery life.
So all in all I don't for a second regret the purchase, you get 95% of the performance of a 4G phone, with the advantage of better battery life, and the completely awesome built in control pad. If you want to game, its a no brainer.
When I saw the title of the thread I opened it to give my opinion about this phone. But when I read the previous answers, all that I wanted to say had already been said, so I gave up writing a big text because I don't have anything new to say!
Then I'll only say that it's an awesome phone, buy it without any fear, you won't regret it.

WTF! did you get a stable enough N64 emu (not to mention enough ram to run the rom) I have a GBA SNES NES GameGear and Genesis, but i cant find a good (preferably free at least till applanets back up) 64emu anywhere....and how are you running tekken two though all the psx emus crash cause of sony releasing this phone....oh and as long as you plan to plug the thing in everynight for like 8 hours (although 2.3.3 update fixes that a small amount if you dont game or browse or call or well pretty much emulate any sort of energy from it) than dont buy this phone really takes a commitment, i hate that i bought it then found out motorolla is releasing the droid 3(name changes between SP's) with HDMI out 1Ghz process 8mp cam rear and ii believie dont quote 3.2 front (might have been 2.3 or somewhere goin on memory of specs) THAT IS THE PHONE YOU WANT IF YOU ARE STILL LOOKING but release does depend on SP Bell got it first! havent folllowed up on it much just pisses me off that i bought a damn sony product over a 3ds.......oh and sorry if i repeated anyfacts
It is my favorite device. I just put in 2 hours of Beyond the Beyond without any awful on screen controls or bluetooth shenanigans.
Sound quality is spectacular too, as is the battery life.
The only thing that could use some improvement is the camera.
If you enjoy games more than just casually and really enjoy emulation, there is no other real option IMHO.

K Sound Agreed, Battery however i would like to know what miracle device you are using to keep it powered cause even with the 2.3.3 update which i wont le improved battery life significantly, i dont find its able to keep up with the demand especially noticable when streaming data i.e. skyFM or TuneInRadio(awsome app by the way for a phone with no FM reciever any radio station you could imagine....from all 7 contenent...yes there is a sat radio station based in antarctica for the 12 people that are ever there at one time, sheesh im Canadian and i say no thanks to that lol sorry off topic tired and ranting), and camera is decent quality 5.0mp front is only1.2 so self portraits are a little grainy i find, but none the less i have to agreee it could use more features to the actual cam its self

Anyone interested

Haven't you pissed on this guy's thread enough? Then you come into a forum with people who are obvious playstation and Sony fans and say the Xbox360 "wins in every department" which is so untrue its not even funny but I'm not getting into that flame war here.
You don't seem to like the phone much, and you don't seem to like PS much, door is to the left, go buy another phone then.

Then and Now

This is my opinion about Xperia Play's rise from it's announcement until now.
Then:
Xperia Play was at the time of it's announcement the long-expected "PlayStation Phone", the phone that could also play PSP games. Unfortunately, it wasn't like that, so most of the people who were excited about this phone had lost all their interest. Only a few remained interested in this phone at it's beginning and so it is that XPlay's popularity has been so low on the first three months. At that time it was seen as:
- A phone with the last Android version that time - 2.3.2
- It had just a few optimised games, already known by others
- It had only a PSX game
- A thick phone with a bad design
- It was almost as expensive as iPhone (between $750 and $800)
Now:
Although no one could imagine a phone that was already labeled as a dissapointment could be 10 times better after some months, it changed a lot. At this point I would say to others that you can't even compare XPlay with Vita, because it's far much better. More and more people are becoming interested again and it's popularity is rasing to the top. It was the work of SE company and developers that brought up this phone's popularity and awesomeness. XPlay now has or will have:
- Android 4.0 (upcoming)
- Ability to fully play PC games with OnLive
- Lots of software changes made by SE through updates (like the 720p filming)
- Lots of mods which made our lifes easier made by devs D)
- Ability to play PSX titles through PSXPeria and FPse
- Ability to play PSP and PSX original games through PlayStation Pocket (upcoming)
- Over 200 optimised games
- Some games were for a period of time XPlay only
- The price went down a lot (now it's between $380 and $420)
Also Merry Christmas everyone!
This is true... however I always had faith in the phone getting better.
There were just so many people who were impatient and wanted to throw their toys on release day and have a cry and then sell the phone... Obviously weren't real gamers to begin with.

But the phone was marketed to them. Sony didn't really try to push it for gamers only. look at the advertising, Kristen Schaal playing two roles, the slogan "Everything you need and the one thing you want"... None of that is designed to appeal to hardcore teen gamers, but to a more adult audience.
To be honest I wasn't disappointed with the phone when it came out, I was just stoked I could beat the first level of Super Mario 3 without wanting to throw my phone in anger.
But like a fine wine it got better with age.
$380? Its going at around €200 in the EU. Got mine for €160 unlocked myself.
Also the phone has flaws, and networks seem to be dropping it. Not worth €500 IMO. Worth €160? Id happily pay €240 for it tbh

Haha, its happened to me before, weird theres no take back eh? Gave you one to make up for it anyway. Yeah no such thing as a perfect phone. And no, the flaws are far from terrible, and its certainly an excellent device

He hasn't said that..but this phone was never worth five hundred euros. At its current price It's probably the greatest bargain in terms of price-quality alongside with the now defunct Xperia Neo. I'm yet to see a better bang for the buck ratio in any other brand.

Exactly - it was worth maybe €450 at a push on release. But at the current price, its amazing value, I mean you wouldnt get a Nexus or Desire for that, and they are far worse devices.

I know right? I've done it a few times now =P. Thanks for the thanks back, heheh.
Its been one of my better phones, that's for sure. Not sure I could trade it up for a non gamepad phone now

Far as I'm concerned, it is perfect.
I've always wanted a device that's truly all-in-one. I'm talking about something that navigates, plays music, plays movies, sorts/views pictures, checks my e-mail for all my accounts, can stream all sorts of media to and from the device, takes care of all my office needs, records video in HD, allows video chat, social networking, group chats, provides a prime web browsing experience, allows me to check my bank balance, lets me take notes, record lectures, does all the phone basics, allows true voice control, lets me quickly jot down notes, allows easy access to the file system, AND plays games with a sense of tactility, responsiveness and precision... without any kind of ridiculous external controller that must be separately charged, assembled and/or paired.
No other phone or game device does that. None.
This does all that... with smooth operation in everything from games to day-to-day menus, great battery life, various UIs that are so infinite in possibility that I switch them roughly every week, simplicity, enough ability to customize so that the device works itself around me (and not the other way around - hear that Apple iOS?) and a level of consistent competence that makes me wonder if there's any point in a phone stronger than this.
I started off very critical, and this thing has passed at everything I've thrown at it with flying colors. There is absolutely nothing else on the market that does this as well as the Xperia PLAY does. Other solutions bring physical controls to smartphone gaming, but they ALWAYS have **** support outside of emulators... not a single one has over non-emulated 200 games, and not a single one operates without all that pairing nonsense.
I could complain about the 400MB of memory, but with the ADB trick I've hit 183 installs and still haven't taken up enough memory to make it say I'm running out of space. I could complain that it's not a dual-core, but the only people that'd really complain about that are the entry-level G4TV-watching tech-newbies who don't know how a good GPU/RAM can change the tides when processor strength initially looks small... with games like Dead Space running so smoothly, seems like tossing in a stronger processor would be detrimental to the battery life before it actually does anything useful.
So yeah... I'm satisfied
I actually agree. It gained its hype although no one really noticed it during its launch. But since the price has gone down to £160 im sure it's going to get alot of attraction now

This!! Back when I had my HTC Hero, I always wanted some sort of bluetooth controller so I could control emulators more easily!

I feel ya. If the sexplay 2 gets cancelled I may just not upgrade. There's not been any other phone out there that's made me think that. I'm usually the latest tech whore, but why have all that power if you can't really use it properly?

But the phone was marketed to them. Sony didn't really try to push it for gamers only. look at the advertising, Kristen Schaal playing two roles, the slogan "Everything you need and the one thing you want"... None of that is designed to appeal to hardcore teen gamers, but to a more adult audience.

TBH if it was marketed to teen gamers there would have been no way in hell I would have bought it.
I am an old school gamer and wanted a good mobile for work and for gaming.
The only 2 things I wish the device had was 12mp Camera and an HDMI port. But will be definitely be buying the X Play 2... But now that Sony has taken over the mobile division it is more likely to be an actual "PlayStation phone".
i do agree , i think we all agree
imagine that you have a phone with 8 core (( CPU )) , how you can enjoy with your phone when you have to touch screen for play games ?!!
beside how can you see your screen when your finger is on that !!
any way ,
i think it xperia play have very good design whit good hardware ...
but now
i think we all need sony's exclusive games , not android global games , just imagine great games on xperia play , like " god of war - resistance - locoroco - little big planet - patapon - uncharted - grand turism..." and other company's games " like silent hill ... "
it's time for sony to show its ability on games world .
i don't know guys , are you agree with me! but i want to say : SONY,WE WANT YOUR EXCLUSIVE GAMESSSSSSSSS
