[CLOSED] ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2:) [NO MORE ACTIVE!!] - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Im not going to update this thread anymore.
It has been a terrible experience here.
All the updates from now on will be on irc channel ..
I hope everyone will be happy and excited about this closure.
Cheers.

Cant we have dual boot on the HD2. it will be cool to have android 2.0 and windows 6.5 on the phone, it will surely kick some ass. and do you think that this phone is upgradable to windows 7

Only possible for dual boot as you need to run harret to get it to boot into linux - android stuff.

Acer Liquid, coming on november will bring Android powered by a Snapdragon processor and wvga screen, I don´t know how it works but maybe it´s rom could be ported easier to HD2? and adding the Sense ui from Hero? I´m sorry I know it´s not easy, but since I´m not a developer I just can see these steps inside my head

Cool! I like WinMo, but I would prefer to try Android, and since no hardware is better than HD2´s, and new possibilities to port Android successfully are coming, I think a new monster could be born here

yes, i`m definitally for this thing.... there will be no problem if leo won`t support wm7, if it will be able to run android...

In fact it will support wm7, but thats up to the OEM's if they want to release a wm7 test rom for these cortex 8 devices =].

HTC have says no to android on HD2, so if its going to happen your going to have to do it yourself.

What would be required? Android 1.6+ supports other CPUs including Snapdragon so what else is required to get it to work with Android? Would be very neat.

that would be great, but what makes you so shure??

who wants andorid 1.6 on the hd2. what we want is the full version of android 2.0

Definitly 2.0

maybe the release of a htc android device with the same hardware as the hd2 will make it easier for developers - but better off getting in the mindset that it won't work
the hero has the same processor as the hd1 doesn't it (and android development on that seems very difficult and slow)?

yeh but look at the possibilities of where we were and where we are today. progress is being made every day now, i hope you go throught the irclogs if so, and it takes time to achieve every goal. a seed doesnt grow into a tree in a day, it takes time and thats whats being talked here. so it wont be hard enough for us to get to the deep of the phone when it comes. cheers.

it would be good to see the progress.. I have read the last few pages on the blackstone and haven't seen anything from the developers. Last update was the 18th where it went back from v1.6 to v1.5?
I can't see why time is being devoted to 1.5, surely the focus should be to work on the most up to date version of android than taking a step back.
Obviously i'm not a developer for the android project on the hd1, but if one comes to the hd2 I will donate to a project with quicker progess on android 1.6, preferably 2.0.....

I have one of these HD2's on pre-order just for this reason I hope I can get something accomplished, and am willing to work on flashing and dumping things
if anyone so asks, as soon as I have it in hand.
Ill be working on it myself too.

Are we going to see a push for an Android port for the Tmo HD2?

Are we going to see a push for an Android port similar to what they already have working on the Touch Pro 2? I was curious if this is already in the works, or if we're just going to have to wait for the EVO to come out and have someone port that over.
Android question
Dude to answer your question Android is the same for Europe, Australia, US, and China. It utilizes the same drivers so bro so no need to port, it has all ready been done.

not to be rude but he asked are we going to see a push for android to hd2. Obviously android will stay the same throughout other countries..other than language adaptations. N to answer the original question...yes there will be a push, im thnknin when the evo comes out we will have a better chance. N if there was a fully working android port to HD2 i would have it, i pray the day comess soon
I hope so, because its the only reason i got the HD2 to be honest, and that way i can get rid of my Nexus because WinMo isnt cutting it for me (
In the main HD2 forum there are a couple of Android Discussion & Dev threads. From what I have heard they are working on it but with the current available info it could be 6 months to a year before we see a working port, now that may or may not change when the Evo is released. You have to realise that even though the hardware is similar, the drivers and Kernel are much different so it's very difficult to make a port.
But that's pending the release so we will see.
Can i run Android on my HD2?
..And if so which one should i use?
Im already missing Android, this Winmo is making me want to pull my hair out..
Are there any with Sense UI that run 2.1 Android?

If WinMo makes you want to pull your hair out, maybe you should go back to an Android device?
No, there are no fully working ports, and there probably won't be for a good year.
Why you'd want to castrate a phone like the HD2 with Android is beyond me though.
dude if you like Android why in the world would you buy the HD2? You already know this is running winmo from the start. if you're still in the 14day buyers remorse then return it. cant be that hard....... heard the desire is coming sometime this year to tmobile so save yourself from trouble and from pulling your hairs..... i myself is gettin' bald from people asking bout androids and crap for hd2.... lol
The HD2 is not that different from a desire/nexus 1, why not just buy that instead of buying a WM device then posting in a WM forum hoping for an android port? Seems simpler and you get a FULLY working device.

Truefully I'm happy with the HD2. I sold my Nexus cuz I love the screen on this thing and you can't go wrong with snap dragon on this device but until TMO gets their own version of a the Supersonic um good for now.
I think this phone would be a beast with some form of Android on it.
This is probably the 20th thread created asking the same question... please search before starting new threads. They have been working on an Android port for months now. The EVO might help a little, but it will still be a long time before there is a decently working port... at least a year.
I dropped my G1 for this phone, I love Android and all, but the screen size and speed was worth it. I do hope someone gets Android running on it, because that would be just awesome. If not, it's no biggy.
Also, are there any partial ports of android? Like ones with no Wifi etc? I haven't seen anything, but I may have looked in the wrong places.
No there is nothing working yet, partial builds will be the first that we get and then go from there. But like said it may be up to a year before we do.

The *hope* is to dump the kernel from the Supersonic on Sprint when it comes out this summer. That *might* help a bit with drivers and whatnot, but even then, it is going to take some work.

No, there's no definite anything. Android may never get ported. WM7 may never work. There's some talented people out there but that doesn't guarantee a damn thing.

By that time Windows Phone 7 will probably be ported over to the HD2.
Why buy a WM phone and wish for Android? Why not just get the N1? Android and Windows are made for two different types of people. Those who just want to press a button and those who want to see how the button works and change it to do other things.
From day one, WM was never meant to be an "out the box and work like a charm" device. It always required a little tinkering. Hearing all this "I wish it had Android" makes me wanna puke!

Is there still an progress of the Android port?

Hey all,
Im quite new and I was wondering if someone knows if there still is a progress of the android port to the HD2.
I've searched myselfs lots of times but I didnt find anything except in the [CLOSED] ANDROID/MAEMO/LINUX on HD2 [NO MORE ACTIVE!!] thread (CANT URL THIS IM NEW!!!)and its closed...
So my question was... Is there still a progress going on? and how far is the progress? Please reply.

They're still working on getting Linux on there and from there Android will go on. It's going to take a while (many months).

Yeah, there's no way to positively say how long it will be or even if it will ever be done.... right now they are stuck on some kernel issues that they have yet to figure out. They haven't made any more progress for a couple weeks, I think. But I'm remaining hopeful.... I think things will work out eventually. I'm in no rush for Android.

Am not expert when it comes to this but am guessing things might get a little better when the evo comes out as they have both got simmiler hard ware so they might be able to use the drivers etc.

The drivers aren't the main issues.... they already have a lot of the drivers. The main thing they were hoping to get from the evo is the touchscreen... but it uses a different touch sensor than the HD2, so probably no luck there. The evo might help a little, but probably not any more than the nexus one did. It's just gonna take time to work out the kernel issues.
With so many android phones coming out with specs similar or even better than the HD2, this is a futile attempt.

This is the worst kind of news... I mean, baby steps are fine, but no progress makes me worry.
... not wishing to bash the people who are working on this, just stating my worries here.
BTW, I'm sort of amazed that hardware manufacturers would rather side with software developers rather than the community. IE: Throw down the specifications and then porting one phone OS to another phone won't be such a problem, right? Instead, they keep the specs hidden and only one software company gets them (in this case MS). If software could be changed, it would force the developers to put some more effort into it.
Alternatively... are there any phones with Android and Snapdragon-like CPUs coming out sometimes soon? I bet that'd help.

Why is it a futile attempt? It was known from the start that there will be just as good or better android phones by the time it was finished. Thats how it was for all the android ports to WinMo devices in the past. I dont want to use android full time... anyone who does should have gotten an android device instead of a WinMo device. I want to use my WinMo most of the time, but have the ability to boot into android on the same phone and use that if I want to. Android or Linux ports were never being developed to completely replace WinMo... just get an android phone if you want that.

HTC HD2 & Android

To all the gurus here at XDA I am getting the HTC EVO 4g tomorrow, but I really don't like the carrier for this amazing unit so I am considering bring it back since I like Tmobile better. My question is, if I purchase the HD2 and root it will i be able to load Android 2.1 in it?
Please advise
Thanks to all of you in advance
Please read the forum posts for this.
at the moment u cant load android on the hd2!
dcordes and the other guys who r working on the "linux on htc hd2" project made a functional kernel but there isnt a working android version yet. it will take a while until they will get android on it. i really dont know how much time it will take but it could take 1 year more or less i think.
It could be a very long time before there's a port thats as functional as a phone made for android. There still isn't a perfect android port for any winmo phone yet, and some of them have had android being developed for years. If you want to use android full time, get an android phone, not a winmo phone. Even if there's a bootable port soon for the hd2, it won't be very functional and wont be able to use some of the phones hardware (bluetooth, wifi, camera, etc). I'm not expecting a fully functional port for a year or 2.... if ever.
Sorry for my ignorance, what will i be able to do by rooting this hd2, i really don't like windows mobile
do some research!!!
Going to start swearing at people soon,
Surely if Android had made it on to the HD2 it would have been all over the NET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You can somehow manage to put your new EVO hardware into a HD2 body and there you go you got the first full funciton running Android HD2.
Not even if you search here you could get answer but you could even google and it will direct you here.

You are confusing a lot of things here. You can't root a windows mobile phone the way you mean for Android. What you can do is to install an SPL or Hard SPL that allows you the flixibility to load up customised roms, ie customised windows operating systems, onto your winmobile device, ie HD2.
You have got a lot of reading ahead of you before you can make any sort of decision and start to do things to your phone that could seriously injure its health! The first decision you need to make is whether you want to go down the Android route or Winmobile.
Once you have the answer to this you can start to do your research and learning in the appropriate fora.
Hope this helps.
Moving this to General/Q&A.

Update on Android on HD2 - New Article

Hey all,
I have been waiting for news on this and it has been May since there has been any word on the Android OS being able to run on HD2s. Supposedly they have gotten over most of the major conflicts with this anticipated pairing. Check out some of the information from this article below:
Title:
HTC HD2 Android Port Makes Strides, Nears Release [Community Overcomes Problems Plauging HTC HD2 Android Port, Hopes to Have Public Release Available Soon[
Info:
With Windows Mobile dying a slow and painful death, Windows Phone 7 right around the corner and Android gaining a considerable portion of the smartphone marketshare along with buzz, the HTC HD2 remains a device lingering in limbo, begging for some attention. Regarded as one of the best Windows Mobile 6.5 powered handsets with a 4.3-inch capacitive display, 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 576MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera, microSDHC slot and WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/3G the HTC HD2 lacks no where in terms of hardware, but arguably everywhere in terms of software.
...
Apparantly, the port was plagued with problems regarding the HD2′s processor along with the Linux boot tool dubbed HaRET that would be used to actually make the Android port. Luckily, those problems have been overcome giving the HTC HD2 Android port the much needed kick to near public availability. Be sure to check back soon as we track the port’s progress.
If/when this port is made available, will all of you HD2 owners out there make the jump from Windows Mobile to Android? If not, why?

I also have heard that someone actually has a working Windows Mobile 7 on a HD2, its in the development stage, can someone post on that if they know more. I am hoping for a dual boot so I can use both and have the best of both worlds.

hey theres a pretty cheezy app in the omarket that looks like android its basicly like the sbpshell i guess but its kinda cool to mess around with =) and i cant wait for andriod i check up on it every day haha i hate this winmo 6.5 crap
Keep in mind we are still a long way from a fully functional port that you would actually want to replace winmo with. I wouldn't expect a fully working port that can actually use most of the hardware (bluetooth, wifi, gps, camera, etc.) and that works like an actual android phone for at least a year... and I would consider that fast development. Look at all the other ports for other winmo phones... none of them are fully functional yet... they all have missing parts and bugs. Great progress has been made in the last week for the hd2, but theres still a long way to go.
guess if you could do a dual boot with windows and android..would that make it the first hybrid OS? maybe call it WinDroid..or has that already been coined?

There are several other WinMo phones that can boot into android... this isn't the first winmo device there working on this for. That's how we pretty much know what to expect with the port and how it will take a long time to get it fully functional... They'e been porting android to winmo devices for years... even before there was an android device released.... but not one port is fully functional yet like a dedicated android phone. These android ports are fun to play with and if theres specific apps you want to use its nice to be able to boot into android... but they usually aren't good enough to replace winmo as your daily phone os for a long time. So don't expect your HD2 to become as functional as an EVO or any other android phone anytime soon.

Like I said earlier... the android port is not going to be as good as an android phone. Your not going to want to use it full time and replace windows with it for at least a year. You shouldn't have gotten a HD2 if you don't like winmo, because thats the only os that will run well on the phone for a long time. The android port will be nice to play with, but its going to be very buggy and not very functional for a long time. Look at the android ports for the other winmo phones... and they've been under development for years.
I don't know about that...I've used the port on both the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 and both are REALLY good. Really...the ONLY thing that stops me from using the TP2 port in everyday use is the "no external speaker". It's usually not a big deal durring work hrs since it's on vibrate all day anyway...but when im home and stuff gets loud...vibrate doesn't work for me. The only other things that don't work I believe are camera, bt, and gps(which KIND of works). None of those 3 would stop me from using a phone every day. The Android port for the TP2 is blazing fast compared to other devices with the same processor(i.e. g1/mytouch) and offers you that beautiful wvga resolution(480x800). if and when the HD2 gets to that point...i'd use WM durring the day for work, and Android by night lol
Is triple booting possible?
I thuroughly enjoy the freedom that the HD2 allows us. If you know how to us WM propperly, there isn't anything that this hardware can't handle. Adding the ability to boot into Android, or WP7 for that matter,is simply an added bonus. Will I install it on my phone? Of course. There isn't much that I haven't installed on my phone. But did I buy this in hopes of a port to another OS? No. I would have bought a phone that came with said OS if I needed that.
Thank you to all the developers who have worked tirelessly to make our phones so much fun. Keep doing what you do for those of us who can't.
^i agree wholeheartedly. I bought this phone after having a G1 and before that having a Wing, MDA and SDA. I am used to WinMo and Android and though I love Android, I can't say I'm dissatisfied with WinMo at all. I love the freedom to flash roms and all the different sorts of customization options I've got. If Android is what you want, I'd say don't get the HD2 from the start.
Speaking of Win 7 I hope the developers are working on it for the HD2. Rumor was that it will not be able to run on it.

Why even bother if it is soo buggy and not fully functional? Just for fun? I don't get it if it is sooo far away from a fully functional port why is everyone so excited. Sorry but your statement makes me feel like this android port is a big waste of time. Im sure next time I get a new phone I will try out an ANDROID phone.
The reason we are excited is because it brings new life to our phones, it allows us the freedom of choice. I love Windows and I love Android and the prospect of getting WP7 makes me excited because I don't have to shell out money for a new phone when I have a phone that I love right here, to do whatever I want and make my phone what I want it to be. It isn't a waste of time, it is a huge step to the development for a Android port to an original Windows phone. Saying it's a huge waste of time is like saying cooked roms is a huge waste of time, it adds another spectrum to our devices allowing us to customize, mod, hack, and personalize as we please.
I just booted Android on my HD2 and I can not wait till it's stable and I can play around with it even more. I got to the Set Up Device screen and played with the menu ! I'll post a video soon!

HD2 or Desire

I know u ppl got tired of this question , but since I'm ordering new phone these days , I dunno which one to choose.
My vote will go to HD2 , since I heard there will be Android on it aswell (that was my main reason why I even thought about Desire).
I hope you kind ppl can help me solve my "problem"
Cheers,
Alex
Just get a Desire, the HD2 will never run Android as stable day-to-day as phone a designed to run the OS.

Like I thought so, thanks for your reply.
EDIT : Also , other replies are welcome too
depends on what you need most, big screen or android.
Both , but Android on 1st place.
The Desire HD or HTC Ace is due in October basicly a HTC EVO for GSM, it may be worth waiting till that comes out before you buy...
Personally, I will jump to Android when this phone arrives, I'm done (after many years) with WM ...
Thanks for reply , I just can't wait 'till October , but thanks anyway.

if android is your top priority, why is this even a debate???
There has not been one instance of Android as a primary OS on any WinMo phone to date. And that is after, what, 2 years of trying.
Don't let the aesthetics of the HD2 fool you. If your main concern is the OS, then go ahead and get the Desire. No question about it. Android will never be running 100% on the HD2 and if you're not accustom to winmo in general (which mean countless head-scratching as you're trying to make it work), you're screwed.
Then I guess imma buy Desire.
Thanks for feedback.
Actually I'm using desire ROM on hd2, working fine, they made Android really batter in a few days.. think of the advantage of a dual boot

Hmmm , does it have any glitches / bugs w.e ?
Cuz I don't want my phone to freeze or something , and its brand new.
You bet it does. I am an ex-owner of an HD2 and I swear to God that if the guys from the service center will give me a new HD2, I`ll say "no, thanks... what about a desire?" without having any second thoughts.
Personally, I`m done with the HD2. Full of bugs/freezes/etc, and I might say that I`m not quite the average apple fanboy who wants everything to work out-of-the-box. I love tweaking and hacking, but only to an extent.

my girfriend has the htc desire. in my opinion it has only 2 advantages over my hd2: better screen sensitivity and a brighter/more colorful screen (which i find not very natural anyway...).
the hd2 can run android now, it has a larger screen (with more natural colors) and i'm not willing to give up on wm just yet. android is very finger friendly, tons of apps and a more "secure" future ahead but i got bored with it very quickly.
so to make things short, i recommend to go with the hd2 or wait for something else...
oh, forgot to mention - your experience with the hd2 is highly dependent to the rom/radio/location "trinity". i am very happy with mine
I really wanna say: get the HD2.
An Android ROM should be made available in another month or two and with all the development behind the HD2 (on XDA of course!), it might even run Android better than the Desire some day. And who knows, the HD2 might be ported to WP 7 some time next year.
How about them apples?

I serverly doubt there will be a flashable ROM for the HD2, read here, Zarathustrax has a good knowledge of Android ports.

I haven't a clue my friend, Zarathustrax is the man to ask.
I think you should get the HD2. What can the Desire do that that the HD2 can't? And that massive screen dweebs out any other phone on the market. Plus the HD2 is cheaper than the Desire.
If HD2 will get a Stable and fast Android rom.....go to HD2....you will have two SO on a big, big screen.
but just if will have android stable...in contrary....
