3g? - Hero CDMA General

sorry for the noob question, i posted this in the non-cdma hero sub-forum (mods please delete other thread) but i tried to search for this question so sorry ahead of time.
does the cdma hero have 3g and if so how do i use it?

3g as in the data service?
sprints 3g is called EvDo, and by default its always on..

yes the Sprint version has 3G if you are in an area that has 3G service. Its not really called "3G" by sprint it's EVDO REV.A
You dont have to do anything special to use it unless you have it turned off. Do you see a 1X or EV in the notification bar?

thanks for the reply. again sorry for the question. yes i have the 1x or Ev

just another tidbit 3g stands for third generation

3G instead of EV on Sprint

Looking for a simple way to replace the EV with 3G on the task bar icon.
Any help appreciated!
Go into a 3G zone and it will say 3G
All the icon files are acually in your phone.... meaning the 3G one is in there as well. I would assume you could just copy and rename the 3G one to whatever the EV symbol is to replace it... I could very well be wrong though.
Question though, if your EV says 3G how will you know if you're in a 3G area or not?
On a CDMA device, 3G is EVDO. Whenever you have EVDO showing, that means you're in a 3G area.
By default, it will not explicitly show the 3G icon.

Mobile Network Settings?

I was going thru my girlfriends phone tonight and i was curious under that mobile network settings. what is the difference between "Hybrid"..."EVDO-Only"...."1x-Only"?? Just wondering what should i have it set on and the difference between them? thanks and the phone is rooted with modaco 1.1 ROM
evdo is data and 1x-only is voice i think keep it in hybrid
Noo... Ev-DO is like 3G speeds... 1x-Only is kinda like GPRS speeds... if you have it in Hybrid that means if it doesn't have an Ev-DO connection, it will fallback to 1x speeds. If you have it in 1x-Only, you won't get Ev-DO even when you are in an area with Ev-DO. SOrry for my explanation nif it's crappy... it's like 12:30 P.M right now (or A.M/ idk im really tired i can't think )

So my 3g doesn't work...always switches to HSPDA and then works.

Title says it all. When i have NO HSPDA I become screwed and I have to revert to EDGE otherwise I have no data connection. I haven't tried it out of town yet, but it's ridiculous. It says I'm on 3g, but then switches when I start a speedtest. Is that just because I'm always in HSPDA? Any ideas?
I'm on the Desire ROM. I don't think it's the rom though, because this happened on Cyanogen.
HSDPA is only on when necessary, when it isn't, your on 3G. You're in an HSDPA area, so when you use data your carrier bumps you up to HSDPA.

Assuming you're in the U.S. and on T-Mobile, this thread covers your issue:
3G --> H Data problems

Ahh much thanks. So in theory if I leave the HSPDA area my 3g will work because it isn't trying to switch?

If you leave an HSPDA area and only UMTS (3G) & EDGE are available, then in theory, yes. The data will transfer over 3G or EDGE. It's normal for the N1 to "idle" with the "3G" icon, but when you're actually doing data transfer, it'll switch to "H" if it's available.
In other words... nothing is broken. =)
Most people are confused by the "H" because on the *Stock* ROM, the "3G" icon doesn't differentiate between "UMTS/3G" and "HSPDA"... It'll always display 3G with either technology. The *Custom* ROM's differentiate which technology the handset is talking with the tower in regards to HSPDA and UMTS.

[Q]How to distinguish 1X or Ev-Do service we get on Epic?

I'm trying to flash epic to another carrier(in china). I've already flashed the imsi, esn, akey, aaa userid, aaa passwd. Everything seems to be fine(calls, sms...), except the data service.
The connection is extremely slow(got about 125kbps down and 120 kbps up), it seems the epic is using 1x not ev-do.
When i set "HDR/1x Selection" in ##DATA# to "Evdo Only", the "3G" icon is still there. I dialed *#147852#, selected "Testing" then "Phone information", i found that the "Network type" is "1xRTT".
WTF, I'm really confused by epic.... Since there is absolutely nobody talking about Epic 4G in china and I know that no one could know more about this phone than you guys on XDA, I really need your help!
Sorry for being a noob and sorry for my stupid english, but i just want things to be done, PM or posting welcomed, Thank you!
Put the phone in airplane mode then bring it out to have it update the EVDO Only.
You also need to use CDMA workshop and copy NV Items 465, 466, 1192, and 1194. That will get you 3G speeds.
I believe you can also use QXDM for the NV items. But CDMA WS is way easier.
While on this subject,i read somewhere that there is a way to force Epic and Evo to use Verizon network without roaming charges(since sprint and verizon share same towers),im upstate ny and sprint 3g service is not that fast,i would like to try verizon and see if I get better speed. If anyone knows how to do that please post it on here.

thank you for you remind, i had a reboot and with no luck... i wonder if there are other NV-items than 465 466 1192 and 1194
This is not development. Remember everyone, post questions in general section, not development!

Nexus S only shows 3G no H in Taiwan

On my news Nexus S I am only getting and showing 3G with poor connection whether I use Chung-Hwa Telecom or Taiwan's Far Eastone. On my HTC Desire when downloading or uploadinging it would show an "H" up on top and show "3G" if connection was not all that great but with this new Nexus S all I get is 3G. What's up with this? Reception is also worse than the HTC Desire.
Because nexus s only gets 3g
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Here I see it showing it gets HSDPA.. From what I understand is the 2100 Band in Taiwan is not just 3G
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3620&idPhone2=3077
It gets HSDPA also, it just doesn't change icons like cyanogen or like the static H on the G2. It wasn't a widely used icon in america until the networks (T-mobbile and AT&T) upgraded to HSDPA or HSPA+.
It is capable of 7.2mbps download.
You could always check the status of the phone under settings to see what connection you have or wait until cyanogenmod comes out for the nexus s, not just the alpha version.
ya HSPA is still 3G with a max download speed of 7.2 HSPA+ depending on device ranges from like 14.4 to 42

Q: The Nexus S only gets 3G? Omg, I only see a 3G icon!
The Nexus S gets UMTS and HSDPA, which are both technically 3G. Your phone idles on UMTS 3G, and when it starts downloading/uploading, it'll flip to HSDPA after a few moments. You can see this by typing *#*#4636#*#* into your Dialer, going to Phone Info, and looking at Network Type while downloading something. The ability to switch the icons on the notification bar is something that was added in custom ROMS, and is not supported by the stock ROM. Rest assured, if you are on a network that uses the 3G bands the Nexus S supports, then you are recieving HSDPA regardless of what icon you see.

WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best. (Maybe the Samsung Galaxy S will take advantage of this???)
Unknown - If none of the above fit or the phone is acting weird as far as connecting to the carrier, you will see your preferred network type is set to this

Still sorta understood all that, so should I just leave it where Im at, i mean it is what came with the phone stock after all
As was stated, when an active data connection is formed and there is activity then the status will change under settings. I have an attached screenshot for your viewing pleasure.

PRL is preferred roaming list, iirc. When searching for a network, it'll get preference to those that are on the list over those that aren't. Supposed to be battery savings.

fair enough
I'm noticing this too. I get full HSDPA in the US on AT&T, but when I came to Taiwan and plugged in my prepaid sim for Taiwan Mobile which clearly has 7.2mbps HSPDA in this city, I only get the "3G" icon.
I did do the *#*#INFO#*#* to set my band to Euro which was how data kicked in. But otherwise it only shows "3G." Readingt he posts above, people say it idles on UMTS, but I have AT&T at home and it always shows the H icon. I can never the the H icon in Taiwan.
I have the 9020a which has 850/1900/2100, so I'm not understanding whats going on... Is the lack of 900 3G band hurting me?
Edit: I've been using this phone for 7 months on AT&T now and I just arrived in Taiwan last night....
