HTC Snap (Sprint) Re-mapping Internet & My Circle shortcut keys - Dash 3G, Snap General

Hi.
I was curious if anyone knows a way to re-map the internet browser shortcut key that is on the bottom right of the Sprint HTC Snap. I would like to have it open Skyfire instead of IE. Skyfire is set as my default browser but the button still opens IE. Also, do the same thing with the Mycircle key but change it to open Task Manager.
Thanks.

The file is in \Windows and it's called short_circle.lnk. Just make a new .lnk and call it short_circle.lnk and copy it to \Windows overwriting the old one.

Hi I got the Inner Circle key remapped using both short_circle.lnk and long_circle.lnk.
I am still having trouble getting the internet key to remap to Skyfire. I have tried making PIE.lnk, short_IE.lnk, long_IE.lnk, short_PIE.lnk, long_PIE.lnk. None of these seems to do the trick. Any ideas?

That key may be hardware coded into the keyboard driver. Not sure.

Christian, instead of editing the Short_circle.lnk file directly, try as follows:
1. Copy the TaskManager.lnk file from your Windows/Start Menu to another folder (i.e /Storage Card)
2. go in /Storage Card and rename TaskManager.lnk as Short_Circle.lnk
3. Copy this file into /Windows
This should work..at least it did for myself.
Regards

Hello,
thanks for your reply, but it doesn´t works.
The InnerCircle Key always start the Inner Circle Applikation.
Greetings
Christian

1) use total commander or the likes,
2) change the read-only attribute on the short_circle.lnk.
3) then replace the shortcut with whatever application you'd like to run and save it as short_circle.lnk.

Thanks! This worked for me.

Hi there,
Do you have more info on that ? I have a S521 (Frenchy ass, fruity ass), and the so-called internet key is for Live Mess-enger. I would be really interested in mapping a different function to that key.

Hi,
is it possible to re-mapping also key dedicated for Live Messenger? I try it in the same way, like for Inner Circle (which work correctly), but without effect.

I know this reply is late, but for anyone still playing around with HTC SNAPs:

Yep I managed this one:
do the same for \Windows\Start Menu\Messaging.lnk
I Used Total Commander, edited Short_Circle.lnk to be non read only
Found the shortcut i wanted to use, edited the file and copied the shortcut link (do a select all), then edit Short_Circle.lnk, remove the old shortcut path and select all and then paste. Enjoy your Custom single Button shortcut key
I have Telstra Branded Snaps, and i had to remove the security off the phones before i could untick the read only attribute on the Short_Circle.lnk shortcut.
To remove the security:
Install "Clear Security.cab"
Install and Launch Microsoft’s Security Configuration Manager on your PC
Select Security Off from the drop down menu and click the Provision button, the program will install a file called Tool.cab on the mobile device.

can you explain further what you wanted to create shortcuts mate? is it the soft button(left and right) at the bottom. If so, just use the built in soft key customizer in the ROM.
hi brian
i use the key customizer, but when i change it, it's say "error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename"
what should i do ?
thank you

do it this way, lets say you have installed htc action screen and wanted to create a short cut on the left soft key.
open soft key customizer, then select customize.
label anything like NEW or HTCA or anything that you want. (In my case I use new) click ok
Then select the correct path with the .EXE e.g. /windows/HTCActionScreen.exe (I believe it should be written precisely if it's upper case or lower case so correct me if im wrong hehehe)
You are almost done! just select anything you want on the right softkey.
Yes on soft reset, presto! a new short cut on the left softkey!
Hope this helps
ow, i see how it works now, thanks brian
oh, i forgot to mention that calendar, contacts, messaging (in the option) don't work, if i select it then tap the key, it say "error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename"
how can i fix this ?
is there anyway to deactivated the softkey customizer ?
i mean to change back to the default setting
thank you

all the options worked for me. calendar/contacts et al. I personally use it to assign htc action screen on left soft key.
If you want the default ones, just run soft key customizer again then select what was the default key before then soft reset.
that's the problem, the calendar, contacts and messaging didn't work, so I can't select one of them for the right side softkey
Oh well, this is my first problem with this ROM, overall I like this ROM
Thank you

remapping the 'internet explorer key' to 'ok key'

I find the ''internet explorer key' quite useless for me. On the other hand I need to be able to send 'ok' command to my touch dual through the sliding keyboard so what about remapping the 'internet explorer key'? Does anyone know how to do that?
coool idea. very convenient and practical. comparing a samsung sgh-i780 to the touch dual, the fact that the i780 had an OK button was one of the very few advantages that the samsung had over my htc. hope someone can reply to this with a solution......
I would like to make the internet button a return key which enters moves the cursor to a new line when typing messages etc, I can't find an easy way of entering a line return when writing using the 16 key keypad.
have you tried AE-Buttons?
AE Button Plus works not as good as I hoped: it's starting another application when I remap it but the Internet Explorer is still started afterwards!
I think the solution could be found in the keyboard driver itself ...!
yap i hope someone could make this, i don't use the internet explorer button changing/remapping it to ok/close button is a very good idea. as for now i change the camera button to ok/close but quite hard to push because in the side corner.
Is there still no solution for this?
i never use the "internet" and "messaging" keys from my keyboard and it would be nice to change them to "OK" and an other program..
bump! i hope someone finds a solution for this..
I found following Registry:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/internet explorer/KeyMaps
Does anybody know if this has anything to do with what we're looking for???
I think I was able to find a workaround for this:
1) make a copy of iexplore.exe in the windows folder to iexplore2.exe (can anyone upload a copy of original iexplore.exe, i can't seem to make a copy of it)
2) Download http://www.vijay555.com/?Releases:VJOkButt
3) from program files of vjokbutt, find the exe and rename it to iexplore.exe
4) copy the vjokbutt that was renamed to iexplore.exe to \windows and overwrite the original iexplore
optional: open a registry editor and replace all iexplore.exe to iexplore2.exe, otherwise, internet explorer might not work..
It would be better if anyone can transform the Messaging and Internet Explorer key into Hardware Softkeys ...! It would be much better because of increasing usability in some fullscreen programs!
I really miss these Hardware Softkeys in Esmertec Jbed!

Remapping Inner Circle and Messenger key?

Are there any tools or registry hacks available to remap the Inner Circle and Messenger keys?
I can think of more usefull programs to map to a dedicated hardware key instead of these...
TIA
Do you actually need to use the Inner Circle and WLM functions on your device?
I ask because the only way so far which I have found to remap those key buttons is to create Mortscript .exe files called InnerCircle.exe and WLMMessenger.exe, each pointing to respective InnerCircle.mscr and WLMMessenger.mscr scripts which run the programs you want. You would then drop these into your \Windows folder, overwriting the original InnerCircle.exe and WLMMessenger.exe files (having first removed the Read-only / System etc. properties from the original files using Total Commander or Resco Explorer). Clearly this will then render the Inner Circle and WLM functions inoperative on your device - not too much of a problem for me as I have no need for either. If you want to regain their functionality you simply need to delete the two .exe files you created and the originals will regenerate from ROM. Note that I found I needed to use Mortscript to get this to work. Simply copying a renamed .exe file of the actual program you want to assign to the button did not work.
I know it sounds ridiculous but none of the "regular" methods for changing hardware key assignments seem to work - I even tried editing the keymap. There is a "Short_Circle" lnk file in \Windows - changing the target of this seems to make no difference. The various registry entries which I have used successfully in previous devices made no difference. It's as if there is some sort of ROM-level hardware association between the Inner Circle key and the InnerCircle.exe file (same deal with WLM).
If anybody can come up with a more elegant solution to this it would be welcomed - I'm a reasonably adept WM user but I'm pretty sure somebody more knowledgeable can do better. If you don't have a Snap then please be a little cautious about being gung-ho with suggestions (!) - I know this is fairly well-trodden territory on xda-developers but the setup with the Snap seems like it might be a bit different. Cheers
P.S. Don't be tempted to delete or disable the Windows Live key from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Services - this will prevent the Windows Live service from loading, which might be good in various ways, but it's needed for the Windows Live key to work (even if the WLMMessenger.exe which is being executed is running something else).

Thanks for the extensive reply. I've been using my Snap for a few weeks now and still don't understand what the marketing-fuzz of InnerCircle is all about.
The InnerCircle app I don't need, at all. It does nothing that can't be done with a server-side rule. So no issue that it is completely disabled in the OS. Messenger is a nice to have for occasional use, but a dedicated button is just a wasted button IMHO.
I'll check out your suggested solution.
A link to the task manager instead of the inner circle prog would be cool.

Can you explain how you did this? I tried the following techniques (which have worked with previous WM phones) and none of them worked:
1. Changing the target of Inner Circle.lnk
2. Changing the target of Short_Circle.lnk
3. Fiddling with the keymap file (although I'm not sure I exhausted this fully).
4. The situation with HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Keys doesn't seem to be the same with this device as with my previous WM devices.
It's almost as if there is a direct rom-level association between the button and the InnerCircle.exe file - perhaps this is not the case with some of the other Snap ROMs. The only way I was able to "remap" the button was using the Mortscript method I explained in post #2 of this thread. I recognise this is an inelegant solution and would welcome a better method (although it doesn't really cause me a problem as I don't need Inner Circle or Windows Live Messenger - in fact I'd rather they weren't even on the phone, I'm sure they will be removed when we start seeing cooked ROMs).
Im kind of a noob to WM.. so is it possible to explain it slightly more detail what needs to be done.. such as creating a mortscript exe.. i just want to remap the inner circle key to the task manager btw
Hi, I am a newbie to WM. Would like to find out whether there has been any other ways of doing this remapping? Thanks in advance!
hallo i'm using omnia pro and having the same problem here, need some expert advice.
I already tried the AE Button plus but it's seem to not recognized the button I want to re map (PIE and WLMessenger button)
i got the same problem with my htc snap. anybody knows how to change the wlm and innercircle keys?
maybe some of the rom cooking experts can write a rom or cook into next rom?
Custom ROM already has it, in parts
Guys.
ookba has done some button customization on his roms.
Long-press power button will bring the Quick List menu.
You can change though settings:
- Press Inner Circle: default is CeleTask.
- Long-press Home: default is Quick List
Check the ROM here:

I'm waiting for a version where we can change the Messenger and Mail/SMS key also.

For some reason I cannot set (remove) the flags "Read Only" and "system" from InnerCircle.exe....Either with Resco Expolrer and Total commander, both applications seem to properly change the property flags, but when I check again the file properties, the "read only" and "system" are back.
So I am stuck with remapping the Inner circle button.
If anyone has some advise, that would be great.

Bump! (I know it's an old thread). Anyone find a way to remap the messenger key??
It seems to me the messenger key somehow is hardwired to launch \Windows\Start Menu\Messenger.lnk. Let Messenger.lnk point to your favorite application and it gets started by the messenger key. This solution is not that elegant since it clutters the start menu, but at least for me it works.
Have fun,
Erik
Hi,
how exactly did you update Messenger.lnk? What did you wrote as a path? Some special characters?
EDIT: solved, I forgot to put double quote. Now it works also for me.

Assign HD2 Task Manager to Hardware Send Key

Hi, This is my First Post to XDA. After using TP2 for 2 months, I just got my new HD2. Its a great piece of Hardware but I immediately notice following things:
1. The Standard Task Manager that used to sit at Top Right Corner is no longer there.
2. All Settings->Personal->Buttons does not have any Button Listed. So, I cannot assign a Task Manager to Hardware Key.
After investigating, I could find that the Task Manager that find from "Settings"->"Other"->"Task Manager" is located in \windows\taskmgr.exe
This is not a Bad Task Manager but I needed to assign this to a Hardware Key.
Following Registry entries will allow you to bring up the "taskmgr.exe" when you perform a Long Press to Send Key (Left Most Hardware Key on HD2):
Go to in registry:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\
Create a new Key: Keys
Inside "Keys" create another Key: 40C6
Inside "40C6" create following Registry values:
1. Name= Name value= Send key(Hold) type=string
2. Name= Icon value= \windows\SendKeyIcon.exe, 0 Type=string
3. Name= Flags value= 0 Type=dword
4. Name= default value=\windows\taskmgr.exe Type=string
Now restart. This is working great for me.

I don't know about assigning it to keys though. May be something in the registry to assign buttons?
A much simpler way to run something from a long press on the send key is to make a shortcut to the app and rename it to "long_send". Then, copy it to the windows folder.
Hi all,
I'd like to map another key for a long press. For example the Windows logo hardware key. What is the code for this ? I only know 40C6 for the call key.
Thanks.

If "long_send" exists, I cannot answer incoming call with this key.
Is it possible to assign a long press action to "home" or "Windows" key? What will be the right filename? It seems not possible with HD2 after seraching the forum.
Thanks.
Thanks!! This registry tweak works like a charm!
Trick with long_send.lnk doesnt work for me...
Another keycode is 40C7 for Endkey.
Does anyone know how to make this work on a bluetooth headset?
I'm trying to get cybertron Voice Commander to fire up on a long press of the send button on my bluetooth headset.
I've put a link to the app in /windows and named it long_send. The send key on my HD2 opens the app but the headset key doesn't?
Any idea why?

That is great!
Any other shortcuts for at least one of the HD2 keys (Home, Back, Win)?
Since I just ran into a problem with the long_send way of doing things, I thought I would add what I encountered.
I have just bought pocketshield, and wanted to have a task manager on a long send key function. Changing copying a shortcut to \windows and renaming it long_send worked great, until I power cycled. At that point the long_send disappeared, and I had to redo the shortcut trick.
I figured something was deleting it, so I used total commander to change the shortcut properties to a system read only file. This worked for the long_send function, but it broke my task manager...
So, I deleted the long_send shortcut, rebooted, and the task manager worked again, so it seems there is a conflict. I ended up using the registry hack from the first post to get it working.
Cheers!
An easier approach... You can assign any volume key long-press to the task manager(or to any program), with Volumex software
Volume keys are easier to reach as they are always next to your thumb(left hand) or next to your index (right hand). Especially on the HD2 which is big and HW keys too far below...

Well, I wonder how HTC could miss this point about assigning buttons and bluetooth stuff as flixibility is probably the most important thing that wm users want.
For me, I have tried the long_send.lnk trick with MSVC, which works , but I can't receive call with send button. Now my main problem is the call button on my headset that when I long press it, it doesn't start any application, but after I install Cyberon VSD, it starts. There should be somewhere that we can configure the file location in which this long press function triggers, but still can't find it. I even can't find the Cyberon exe files.
Any idea, guys? Thanks in advance..
