Is running Android on the Vogue worth getting a new one? - Touch CDMA General

My Vogue is on it's last leg, now the touchscreen has stopped working. I'm wondering if you guys think it'd be worth the $100 to get a new Vogue from Sprint using the insurance or if I should switch plans (I'm on SERO now) and get the Pre or Hero.

dude i would just get the hero! these roms aren't bad but its not the same as the real thing

I'm considering it, but right now I pay $50 per month for 1200 anytime minutes and unlimited everything. For 1000 minutes on a plan that qualifies for the Pre or the Hero it'd be $79.99, or $360 more per year.

yeah it sux that the good phones have the redicoulus plans

There's nothing like the real thing. I'm getting an android phone as soon as Verizon gets them in.

Just to add my two cents, I agree with everyone else... get a real android phone if you can.

sounds like you have the $50 SERO plan. I've got the $30 one, and yeah I'm just as torn as you. It's hard to weigh recurring cost against coolness, just depends on your priorities. IMHO, the cupcake android builds are pretty darn good for everyday use, but they are still not perfect, people still have some problems. My plan is to wait for another year to see if someone figures out a way to get an android phone onto a SERO plan, because in my current financial situation (I'm a poor medical resident supporting a family of four on a solo house officer's salary) I can't justify the increase in recurring cost. In another three years when my salary undergoes a substantial increase I may consider dumping my SERO plan, but even then I may find the extra costs hard to justify for a phone, no matter how cool it is. Plus, by then SERO rules may have changed, there may be more cool phones like the TP2 that are allowed on it (did I associate the word cool with a win mo phone?!?), etc etc.
You've got to figure out how much the coolness and stability and full useability of the real deal (full GPS, full bluetooth, accelerometer, digital compass) is worth to you and balance that against your personal finances, no one can do that for you.

id say no, the vogue is outdated, buy a real android based phone like the hero. thats what im doing in 3 weeks.

Wait... Hero can't be used on SERO? Says who?

I switched over to a Hero. i already had an everything plan, so no change in my recurring costs. IMO, the hero just adds a bit more speed, stability and screen response to what we have on the vogue. I actually turned Sense UI off, don't use the widgets and it eats the battery pretty good. My new phone looks very similar to my old one!
But I am a geocacher, so the compass is what really made me update.

ditto. lol

I am not 100% sure but the plan that replaced the SERO isnt too bad and I think the HERO woks on it. It has the all mobile-to-mobile is free and if you go family and two phones the price is comperable.

Man, it doesn't work on SERO?! That's messed up!

except in one big area, that is price. Sprint SERO 500 $30 a month, EPRP (everything plus referral program) EP w/ data 500 is $60. The comparable SERO vs ERPR EP w/ data 1000 minutes are $50 vs $80. Yes, Hero works on EPRP, but no, prices are not comparable. This is why SERO users hold on to their plans like they are gold . . .

sprint has decided to restrict new cool phones from being able to be activated on SERO plans. Boo to them, but that's what we've got. Go read as SprintUsers, there's a lot of info on there. Interestingly, new win mo phones are fine on SERO, so even sprint thinks they are not cool . . .

How much do you like your phone?

I'm thinkin about switching to sprint from att given the the SERO rates are great given I don't use my phone that much so 30 dollars a month plus 20% discount would be great. I have a HTC Wizard. So I know this would be a nice upgrade. I just wanted to know what you guys think about it with the stock rom and with a modded rom. I'm pretty sure (99%) I'll probably use a modded rom on the phone any suggestions of which one to go with.
Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just a caution. You mentioned a 20% discount. I've been trying for a couple of months, I don't know if it's just bad luck or not... But I haven't been able to get any rep (via e-mail or phone) to apply the corp discount to my lines. So, if that's a deal breaker for you. 30$ a month isn't bad, but... Your mileage may vary.
I "liked" my phone as I am a LONG TIME PPCPE user (from the start) as it was doing everything I expected from it.
NOW I LOVE THIS PHONE after giving it the dcd 3.20 love. I feel like a kid in the candy store and the owner just told me to eat anything I want. This phone far exceeds what I had hoped for now... I did buy it knowing that I would be doing the upgrades so I hoped from the beginning for this type of success... but all credit goes to dcd and his support crew.
PLEASE DONATE TO dcd
It only takes a second, you can donate ANY amount and he deserves it.

With the price differences in SERO vs AT&T I always just remind myself that I could buy a new UNsubsidized phone every 6mos with the savings... On another note the only real difference between the tilt and mogul is the ram (well, and the tilting screen I guess). The mogul runs fine but it does run out of ram frequently...
On another note sprint offers insurance on PDAs - something at&t does not do.

Herald VS G1

Im really thinking of selling my Wing and getting me a G1
The thing that hold me back the most is that there is no A2DP support.
Overall how do you guys think the G1 measures up to the Wing ? Are we still gonna be able to use the G1 with the proxy or gonna have to pay for a data plan?
Edit: I just went through the preorder process and it requires you to pick a data plan, you think you can cancel that after you get your phone ?
I really wonna get me the G1 because its suppose to be a way faster processor, 3D graphics acceleration and a GPS but i also use my phone on a daily frame to play Music though my BT headphones. So that's a major setback for me having to be wired :/ Im probably still gonna get it regardless. I just wonna see what you guys think.
hey gizzy,
i would wait until you know more about the G1 and Android. At the moment there are still to much questions. The data plan the bluetooth problem. Wait until its out in the USA! Than you know more! Or stay with your Wing, like me, and hope that there is a way to get Android for it soon.
Iven if there is i really like the GPS and accelerometer, and the faster processor. I was actually ready to sell my wing to a friend at school n preorder the G1. But i saw that a data plan is required and taht kinda stopped me.
The G1 is sick. I sold my Wing a few weeks ago to get money for it. I pre-ordered it yesterday and will have it on the 22nd of October hopefully. The phone is gonna be great. You can't expect it to have everything though. No phone will. Just look at what it does have and what the possibilities are.

Why did the data plan stop you from pre-ordering it? What kind of plan do you have now? Like what do you pay for x amount of minutes and what do you have for a data and text plan?
currently im ona family plan with 300 min ( but everyone i talk to is T-Mo is at most we use 10 mins lol )and a special offer from about 4 years ago with 300 txt messages, and Unlimited Pucture messages and Unlimited T-Zones ( i use the proxy ) for $2.99 so paying $25 per month now will be a bit much. Im on a family plan with my parents and dont have a job atm so i try to keep the cost down. for the phone id pay myself my sellign my wing but the montly price will add up.
This is the problem I'm having I'm new here myself and trying to pick between the G1 and the Wing. More then likely I'll go with the G1 but I'm just worried about how well it will mod. Only time will tell though I guess.
Its open source so supposibely everything about it should be able to be modified. I wonder if XTC Devs will support is, it'd br great, i dont wonna have to look for another great modding community. it IS and HTC phone so my guess is it will be supported but it'll be a bog change for most developers ( imo )
i highly doubt the 5.99 proxy will still work, and once you order the phone you CANNOT cancel the order, you can either refuse to sign for it or sign for it and return it to t-mo @

i still have my wing but it's a little beat up, i ordered the G1 today after i saw that they changed the whole 1GB throttle down policy.
why?

Getting a G1 is pretty cheap compared to getting any of the higher end Windows Mobile phones. It looks like it's going to be a great phone. It has its shortcomings, but since it's open source, I'd imagine they'd fix the issues quickly and expand into all kinds of features.
agreed.
oh and gizzy, didnt you hear that there will be an update for the g1 to add support for A2DP?
There will be many updated for the G1. It's only just beginning, lol. The phone is gonna be insane.

I guess I see what you're saying if you pay so little a month. Me personally, i'm comfortable with paying $100 or less a month. I had Nextel last year and paid $95 a month for basically nothing. I had a highly overpriced plan which was like 400 minutes for.. $65-70 maybe? All I know is it was ridiculous compared to what I pay now. That and I had an unlimited text plan. So compare $95 a month with a Nextel phone that does nothing compared to having a Wing smartphone for $75-85 a month that can do a LOT of ****. I guess that's why I don't mind paying what i'll pay.
so the A2DP support is software related or are they gonna introduce it with a completely new phone ?
Yeah the proce is pretty cheap for what it does =]
I dont know maybe i'll be able to talk my parents about getting the data plan, he just changed phoen companies and everything to try to bring the monthly expenses down.

As long as it has bluetooth, it's only software related. The Tmobile MDA (HTC Wizard) that I had originally didn't have A2DP, either. But with a ROM update, it suddenly did.
Oh thats cool, then i guess the only thing thats stopping me now is the data plan.
My friend is kinda in the same boat with the A2DP. I told him just to turn his wing into a music phone until the update is released. You would be crazy not to get it. The possibilities with the GPS and open source are going to be awsome.
Yeah it will be, and there will be many fun apps utilizing the accelerometer. yeah my wing is my media phone, i got 3GB of music alone on it. I dont have an ipod or anything but y do i even need one =] Well ive seen some pretty good apps even now and when its released the market will be swarming. probably within a week of its release most things will be fixed. I wonder if i can get it and then just cancel the data plain if the 25/month doesn't fly w/ my parents.
What exactly are the prices for the plans? Are they that expensive? Right now I pay 93 dollars a month for my current plan and services.
Good thing I have a friend willing to buy my Wing for 280. That is a good price no?
Damn open source... oh the possibilities...
You think that when the G1 comes out that it's OS can be ported and correctly configured to work with other phones?
the plan itelf is not expensive, 25 a month for the data plan, but im on a familly plan with my parents so in dependant on what they say, im selling my wing for 200 or so, the keypad is all pealed off so im just trying to cover the cost for the G1

Contemplating Switching to the EVO

I have done the research, and I have been anticipating the release of some sexy android phones on my current AT&Crap Service, and am at the point of pissed off because the lack of android selection, and their restrictive android behavior.
Now, I obviously know the EVO is a better phone, here is my question. Is it worth paying the $85 Termination Fee's on my Fuze, and jumping ship to the Everything Data- 450minutes Plan $69.99 (can get company discount to make it $55.99).
Are you guys happy with your Sprint Converage, and 3G speeds? (I will be using this phone majority in 3G area (buffalo) for the next year, and then will be in Long Island (hopefully getting 4G from NYC in the next 4 months).
Does anyone have Sprint in Long Island/Buffalo, can you gimme some opinions.
Thanks again.
GO ANDROID SENSE!! 1GHZ SNAPDRAGON
I am on the other side of the country, so can't speak to the Sprint service there, but I am paying $140 to terminate my iPhone plan early to get the Evo. I already switched the rest of the family to Sprint from AT&T and when I have switched on Friday I will save almost $100 monthly. I sold my 3GS last week for $400 so the cost of the Evo and my ETF are covered.
Why are you interested in EVO? Screen size? Or front facing camera?
Have you looked at HTC Incredible (Sense UI) or Nexus One (stock Android UI - soon to have Android 2.2)?
I looked at the Incredible very closely when it was released and almost pulled the trigger. Two things stopped me...the cost of the Verizon plans and the fact that if I didn't like it I would have to pay a restocking fee for the phone. Sprint's 30 day policy is totally cost free if you decide to cancel. The Nexus One would keep me at AT&T or off to T-Mobile and I don't care for the T-Mobile service.

I'm in the same boat, the Cost of the Verizon plan is approximately $20 more with less features.
Now you reminded me about the Nexus One ATT Compatible Version, however it can not be purchased without a discounted price.
So now i have to weight my options of, switch to Sprint, be on a separate plan from my family (cause my Mom and Brother are Not technologically sound and have a 3GS and 3G Respectively). Which will be $199.99 for the EVO and $55.99 +Fee and Taxes a month.
Or i could purchase an unbranded ATT Compatible Version of the nexus one for $529.00 ......

Yea, I read that earlier, However I currently have the $30 unlimited plan, so if i stay with AT&T I would just keep that. No point in saving $5 for the chance of going over, especially if i get the nexus one, there would be endless downloading from my end.
I'm paying a $70 ETF to leave AT&T for the Evo. I also have a Fuze, and it's seen it's better days. I doubt it'll even last till my contract is up. So I could pay full price for one of AT&T's crappy phones, or I can pay the ETF and get the Evo. It was an easy decision for me..

to the OP... dont forget the added $10/month fee for EVO/Premium data charge.
I dont know about the coverage and quality of service in the areas you asked about... but it cant be any worse than AT&T.

i'm thinking about paying the ETF on 3 of 4 lines on family shared (mine is contract free since i never got upgrade phone with them); total cost will be $340 (that's what the rep told me yesterday) to terminate the 3 lines; probably can sell Iphone 3GS for about $400 and my N1 for $300-350 so that can cover most of the cost
also, i'll get 23% discount with Sprint for all recurring monthly charges
Edit: will need to unlock the Iphone first since unlocked ones sell for more (although the Ebay/Paypal fees will take a good chunk of it)

I've been playing with EVO for few days and have mixed feelings about it. I normally use Nexus One (T-Mobile's coverage is working ok for me in the Bay Area), so I'm comparing EVO with Nexus One.
Good:
- front facing camera
- kick stand. You'll be amazed how convenient it is. Everything: typing, browsing, watching videos, video calling is much easier with the stand.
- buttons are significantly better than on Nexus.
Bad:
- screen size and overall phone size. I'm not convinced about 4.3 inch screen running at 480x800 resolution. I think if Android starts supporting higher resolutions, it may make 4.3 inch screen worth it.
But for now, I think 480x800 looks good enough on 3.7 inch screen. Of course, EVO's screen is beautiful (and is much brighter in the daylight than Incredible or Nexus), but for me EVO would be too large of a device to carry around all the time (e.g. pocket is out - need to have a belt clip).
- Sense UI. I prefer stock Android UI both for the cleaner (although admittedly simpler) look and for the speed of the OS updates.

I am switching from Verizon to Sprint (Currently have the HTC Titan) you just can't beat their prices, especially since we are on a 5 person family plan. And now my wife is able to have a smart phone (She got the Palm Pixi) for less than Verizon was charging us us for only one smart phone.
Here in L.A. coverage is great, and a buddy of mine did a speed comparison side-by-side with is iPhone 3G and Sprint was notably faster. Can't speak to other areas, but uh, hey, there's a map for that. LOL!

I think they are comparable and it just depends on how you use the phone (and of course network). I don’t like my phones to be bulky and heavy, so I personally wouldn’t trade Nexus One for EVO even if anybody offered that to me. I also have no problems with T-mobile, unless I get to the rural areas, but that of course depends on your area.
For me Nexus One wins because of the stock UI (my Nexus already runs test version of Android 2.2 which I installed manually and it will have an official 2.2 in few weeks) and smaller size/weight (yet same resolution as EVO).
EVO obviously has better cameras, better screen (Nexus’s screen looks poorly under sunlight), but Sense UI + EVO’s size/weight are showstoppers for me. I don’t want HTC bugs on top of the Android OS (for example, I’ve never seen the sd card permissions errors on either Nexus or G1 while using camera app, but have seen it on EVO) and I don’t want to wait extra 6 months or more for the Android updates.

Whoops I think they dropped the ball with pricing

I see what they are going for here. They are trying to bill this as a super premium device. Their flyer "not all galaxy s phones are alike" tries to put this phone in a different league than the captivate and vibrant and thus should cost more.
I think this is a mistake. This is $50 more than the equiv iphone 4 and with the captivate selling for $50 I don't see this selling well.
If they wanted to knock it out of the park they should have kept it at 199 and that would have enticed people to get more for their money with sprint....better phone, same price; cheaper plan, more service/value. This phone will not get the adoption of the EVO and thus will not get the development. Bummer if you ask me because I think the phone looks great. Too bad the marketing people missed the mark.
I'm not surprised...for 3 reasons....
1) Sprint ALWAYS charged 50$ more for keyboard phones over none keyboard ones...
2) The retail price of all Galaxy S phones is 500$...EVO is 450$...
3) The Galaxy S hardware wise is better then both the iphone 4 and the EVO by a long shot...
It is only 50$...back in the day we paid 350$ for our TP2s and no one complained >.>

back in the day it was a different economy and different competition. for me they dropped the ball so much that i'm now looking at t-mo.
I agree that sprint definitely dropped the ball with this pricing. People will see $200 phones and will see no reason to pay $250 when the only glaring difference is a keyboard. But we all know sprint never gets it right, they chose the best of the Galaxy S line and then over price it. lol. But i understand why they priced it at that point and i for one have no problem paying for quality.
paying a one time extra $50.00 does not bother me the slightest, i mean come on, im saving lots of money from switching from at&t to sprint as is, extra $50 once isnt gonna hurt me.
I was fully expecting this phone to be 500 bucks. Us being phone geeks we know that the hardward in it is superior to the evo, but the average consumer is only going to look at the larger screen of the evo and think that is the better phone and think its a no brainer to get it since its also 50 bucks cheaper. I was planning on getting this phone off contract for 500 bucks so i am not suprised in the least. I just hope it lives up to everything i'm expecting. But coming from that POS Hero almost ANYTHING is going to be a step up
I agree sprint pricing is pretty foolish for a company desperate for new subs.
I paid $529 for my nexus, $250 for the epic is nothing.
Sent from my Nextel™ using the XDA app
It's $50. If you're that concerned over $50 perhaps you should not be spending hundreds on a cell phone to begin with?
Who cares if it doesn't generate maximum market penetration or whatever, you're not a chairman at Sprint's HQ or anything, heh. Don't worry about it. I know I'm not.
Give me the damn phone
$50 compare to the $240 in premium data charges accompanying
it is a drop in the bucket.
Sometime you guys kill me. You find any little thing to complain about. $50. Really? $50??? So is $50 going to really change your life? The epic has more features than the other Samsung S phone so why do you feel you wouldn't have to pay more? If you can't afford $50 extra for this phone then "kick rocks" and go get another cheaper phone. I was just hoping it would be around $300. I have had pocket PC phones from HTC(8125, tilt, fuze, TP2...) for the last 6yrs and they were always $500+ and they are no match for this phone. It's the price you pay for new tech. So, I will get my EPIC and you can save your $50, get another phone, and the we can see who is happier in 2 month.
Just my $.02

$50 compare to the $240 in premium data charges accompanying
it is a drop in the bucket.

Just to note, that's $240 over two years. Sure, you're signed to the contract for that long, but whatever. As many have done, I'm going to compare it to other plans on the market for what I have
My Sprint Plan:
450 minutes (unlimited nights/weekends) + Unlimited texting/pictures messaging + Unlimited data + Any mobile, any time included + 4G "Premium" data plan + insurance = $75 a month after fees and discounts (which, if you don't have a discount... what is wrong with you? One of the discounts on my line is because I bank with a credit union)
AT&T:
450 minutes + 5000 Night/weekend minutes (really?) + unlimited data + unlimited texting/picture messaging + Early nights and weekends (Standard on Sprint) + AT&T Navigator (Standard on Sprint with a data plan) + insurance= $95 a month... I'm not going to include any discounts (which, again, I'm sure you can get) because I didn't include a couple standard Sprint services that AT&T charges for.
Verizon:
450 minutes (unlimited night/weekend) + unlimited text + unlimited data + insurance = $97 (doesn't offer a lot of standard Sprint options, no discounts applied again)
T-Mobile:
500 minutes (unlimited night/weekend) + unlimited text + unlimited data + insurance = $85 (no discounts, again... no Sprint standards)
Keep in mind none of these offered free wifi hotspot capabilities and none had anything comparable to any mobile any time (T-mobile has "MyFaves" I guess...)
I am a huge fan of Sprint, but it's really the bill. $50 extra for this phone and $10 a month for "Premium" data doesn't bother me even a little. Plus, I bet if you give it a minute, you'll find it on Amazon for $100 cheaper.
50 bucks man, big deal LOL. what is that like a night of drinking?

Only 1.5 hours of work for me, but I guess if you didn't go to school and only work at del taco its a lot of money lol
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
$50 more than the EVO, over the life of the contract, is only $2 more per month. Not a big deal.
People on every forum are going crazy over this pricing. I agree if you can afford $200 then $250 isn't a stretch. If you can't scrape an extra $50 then maybe you should rethink buying an expensive smart phone period.

This kind of thinking drives me insane. Why don't they charge $299 then? It's only $1 more a week for two years, compared to the EVO!
Consumers are like fruit trees. Some need a shaking for their money to fall off the tree. Some, you have to actually climb the tree to take their money. But the big bonus are the ones that leave their wallet hanging low so no shaking or climbing is necessary.
A lot of you guys seem to willingly fit the last description
Another good metaphor is when you compare consumers to high-school girls...
Either buy the phone or don't. But don't act like your being victimized just because the phone exceeds your personal and arbitrarily-derived spending limit for a smart phone.
My issue with the price is they already plan to get an extra $10 a month for the 4g that I don't intend to use and now another $50 on top of that, I'd guess I'm not alone in this situation. This makes the total cost to switch from my TP2 close to $500 which is making me rethink this phone. I really wanted a nice dev phone but at this price I might as well buy a nexus or something else off contract, or just wait another couple months for the next phone on Sprint which hopefully won't be 4g.

Well if you decide to sell your TP2 it will help recoupe some of the cost.

[Q] Where to go now...

Well, after loving the **** out of my Leo I find myself needing to reup my contract and with AT&T buying tmobile I am not so sure I want to stick around, but so far everyone tells me they are the only two networks that would support my phone. So I ask you guys are there any newer phones that are this loved and open ended as the Leo is?
I mean this phone is just beyond words awesome and I am dragging my feet to leave tmobile cause of it. But with all these new phones coming out and dual core phones I am just wondering if someone could give me some suggestions for another phone this open and easy to flash and hack.

There is no phone like the HD2, and so far I'm not incredibly impressed by the dual-core phones. The sensation is laggy, the SGS2 is ugly and I don't need 1080p recording on a freaking phone.
I'm holding out for quad-core devices or the iPhone 5, unless I just get sporadic and pick up a new device just cuz.
I would just wait till AT&T-Mobile releases a phone that gets both ATT and T-Mobile 3G so you have awesome coverage, no phone right now can do that besides the Vibrant.
I don't know that there are any phones like the HD2 out there, but I am in the same boat as you and can offer a suggestion.
Stick with T-Mobile a little longer but don't lock into a contract. The AT&T deal might not even go through, and even if it does, you wont see any affects of it for several years.
T-Mobile has a new "Value Plan" where if you buy a phone out-right, you don't have to sign a contract and the monthly rate is a lot cheaper ($20 less per month) than if you subsidize it and lock into a 2 year contract. You can switch to this and continue to ride the HD2 wagon, or buy a new device - In which case, if you dont want to pay the full price of the phone up front, they offer a payment plan, where you pay part up front, then $15/month for 20 months. So compare that to the 2-year contract plan and you're saving $5 a month for 20 months, then $20 a month for the last 4 (and beyond). If you decide you want to leave prior to the 20th month, you just pay off the remaining ballance on the phone and you're free to sign elsewhere.

You lost me towards the end there mate, all I know is that tmob keeps bugging the **** out of me to reup and that sure as hell ain't going to happen anytime soon. My plan is still good and stuff I only pay I think 70 a month of unlimited everything.

What he's saying is the "no contract" plans are $20 cheaper than the contracted ones.
The 500 minutes/unlimited data is $80 a month if you're on a contract. The same plan is $60 a month if on the "no contract" plan.

^ What he said. Just go to a t-mob store. They'll explain it better. Hard to explain in a post.
I got it the second time, thanks. True 60 is nice but dropping the 15 more for unlimited mins text and data doesn't seem so bad...still don't see how unlimited can mean 5 gigs, but then I don't work marketing.
Mostly I was just hoping to find the next phone to jump to for a boost in specs but still having the total freedom this phone gives. I mean I can reflash any rom I want to test and then just throw out a restore if I don't like it. There isn't anything this phone hasn't been able to do for me. I am looking and starting to think no one will ever make a phone this good again.
