Hero Donut update = awfully silent - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hello,
Does somebody has heard news regarding a Donut update for the Hero? I need a VPN connection to my company.
I have an unrooted Hero upgraded with RUU to the latest ROM.
Thanks

"Donut" has only just been released by Google, and is currently only available for the Dream and the Magic. Importantly, Google was responsible for the OS builds on both of these devices, whereas HTC was responsible for the build on the Hero. There's probably little point trying to ask HTC as the people in "support" don't seem to know much, and at this point no one can even tell us when the Hero kernel source will become available.
My guess is that we'll see the kernel source released long before an HTC Donut release for the Hero. Once we get that I'm sure someone in this community will cook up a Donut ROM for us, again long before HTC does!
Regards,
Dave

hasn't htc already released donut for some developer g1 devices on their webpage?

Yes... for the Dream (aka TMobile G1) and Magic.

Donut on G2 Touch
Apparantly HTC has released a new ROM for the T-Mobile G2 Touch.
http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=SOFTWAREDOWNLOADS&tab=2
Can anybody confirm that this is the Donut update for the G2?

No it isn't "new". It's just the T-Mobile UK version of the 2.73 ROM that most of us already have.

Dave

Official HTC response
I send an email to the HTC customer desk asking about this, this is the response I got:
"
New Response From [ Pete (Europe Support (Tech)) ]
It will be released at some point yes, but we need to test it and possibly update the applications on
the phone to make sure they work on 1.6 before it is released for the hero. i am sure it won;t be
long.
best regards,
HTC Europe Support
"

So it seems they want to make sure that Sense and their MS Exchange etc integration will work smoothly on donut b4 relasing it to the masses.

That is good news. Apparantly there are some issues with Donut on the G1. A friend of me has a lot of 3G connection problems and can't seem to make a VPN connection to an Astaro firewall.

seeing as the usa sprint hero has 1.6 preloaded i guess it will be here soon for us europeans

The Sprint Hero will ship with 1.5 patched for CDMA support. We are all in this together.

People aren't knowing what they are talking about...the Sprint ADP page states that it ships with 1.5...not 1.6.

i picked up the sprint hero today. it shipped with 1.5

well the tattoo comes with 1.6 already installed, so it is feasible that it won't be long. I guess they just have to re-write some of it for the chipset in the hero, cos the tattoo uses a different qualcomm processor.
i really can't imagine it will take too long.

The reason there is a difference in release time is because the G1/Mt3G/G2/Magic, etc are all "with Google" phones while the Hero is a custom Android device from HTC which means we must wait for HTC while those phones get their updates from Google.

According to htc via twitter (http://twitter.com/htc), it says:-
I know many of you want more info on a 1.6 update for the Hero. I unfortunately can't say anything...yet. I will update when I can. Promise!

So, at least something is happening and could be having a rom update with 1.6 rom soon. Fingers cross!

The G2 is a Hero - not a "with Google" phone.

Android 2.0 Screenshots

This might be old news to most of you, but this made me REALLY happy!!
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/16/android-2-0-screenshot-walkthrough/
looks nice, but they still kept the same horrible android keyboard.
Why is it that 32a users still havent gotten 1.6 and now we are already waiting for 2.0?
HTC you suck....
Ancdroid 2.0
The real question is when the carriers are going to push the upgrade to users. There doesn't appear to be any incentive for them to do so, so I would resign myself to:
a) waiting a long time for your carrier to upgrade
b) doing a custom rom (from this forum)
In Denmark the phones are not related to carriers like in USA. HTC magic is 100 % free of carriers footprints in DK....
I even bought this phone without any carriers or contracts...
Is this an update coming to the MT3G? or is it the interface of a Verzion Android phone?

It's the stock interface for Eclair supposedly, so everyone will get in when they get 2.0 via either HTC's site, OTA from their carrier or, of course, XDA (someone already upped a supposed dump of the Droid ROM on the Dream dev forum).
Google may be delaying officially releasing it to manufacturers and whatnot until the Droid is released (which is in November some time from memory) so as not to piss off the carrier that's releasing it. I guess they'll have to release it for everyone from then on, as you can't morally make a whole build of the OS exclusive to a single device (or can they?).

Ahh, I see, thank you for explaining that for me.

HTC Announces that they are still working on OS update for Hero+Sprint News

HTC on Twitter:
Believe it or not, I STILL can't say anything more about Eclair coming to Hero. Working as fast as we can, promise!
2:18 PM Dec 8th from CoTweet
Sprint Admin via Sprint Community:
We can't acknowledge an upgrade until HTC confirms one - and they're still being coy:
http://twitter.com/htc/status/6476826589
The process is:
Google -->> HTC -->> Sprint -->> You. Google is done, now HTC has to write the SenseUI overlay and test the CDMA radio. Then Sprint has to certify the update and schedule it for release.
It hasn't even gotten to Sprint? I was hoping to have a release before Christmas.
Still, this is great! Even though it hasn't yet gotten to Sprint, something in the works means we WILL be getting an update.
Excellent!
Of course we will be getting the update. We are looking at something close to the Jan 11th release date of the Eris 2.0 update.
Regardless of what Sprint does once the Eris gets it we will get it shortly after. It will be all over these forums without any need for Sprint to pull its thumb from their ass.

The skip from 1.5 to 2.1 with no 1.6 update concerns me. I predict many bugs. Pray that I'm wrong. That being said, YAY! Gooogle NAV! Finally!

The whole reason they have a newer version (ex. 2.1) is to fix bugs, right?
The 1.x Android and 2.x Android development lines are VERY different. I don't think skipping 1.6 makes any difference at all. If we were going from 1.5 to 2.0 < notice the 0 there, you'd have more to worry about.
1.x Android didn't have built in support for CDMA that both Sprint and Verizon use, so HTC had to add that code into 1.5 and if they were migrating to 1.6 they'd likely have to adapt the code a bit again.
2.x, since it has the CDMA built in HTC will have to verify that it works properly, tweak the code possibly. Their biggest challenge is going to be the SenseUI add on along with trying not to repeat the problems with SenseUI and other app issues that hit us with the 1.5 release.
Myself, I'm going to wait for the new version to be rooted before loading it on my phone! Patience required...

I know how this is going to sound...A friend that I work with at Sprint blah blah blah, but here it goes. My friend at Sprint that works with verifing the ROM's for HTC devices has told me that there will be an update for the Sprint Hero in Janurary. It will be 1.6. Not sure about Android 2.0, possibly later on in June.
note...please take this for what you want. Just sharing that I have access to.

Sure hope you are right.
Work for Sprint as well. 1.6 isn't gonna happen and 2.1 has no ETA communicated to the stores yet. Won't be installing it until its root safe.
I'm losing my patience with this phone and the company.
I'll be returning mine unless they fix the issues before the date I can return it.
Part of me feels that this is all just a ploy to stop people from returning the phone and that once they have the sales in the bag they will drop support (which they may have already done, for all I know)

I think you may have this backwards. Only the kernel has been released from HTC and it is available: http://developer.htc.com/ they won't release anything else most likely. The especially won't release SenseUI since it's not GPL. AFAIK only the Linux kernel is GPL and the rest of Android is Apache licensed which means they don't have to release modifications.

Interesting
I've got a feeling it will only be out in April. i think this because HTC are releasing new handsets at the end of march?.. so i think they will only release 2.1 for hero after they are out to stop people taking the cheap way out and just buying a hero with the new software rather than the new handsets maybe??
It is saying that HTC will most probably revealed when Hero can upgrade to And 2.1.
However, they are still unsure whether to let HTC Magic and Tattoo To get the same upgrade.
Rest are mostly users of the 2 not confirmed models users grumbling.

I am sure that it will, given that various Rogers spoke persons (including RogersMary) have promised this upgrade. Also HTC did say so too: http://androidforums.com/rogers/10647-rogers-dream-1-6-update-23.html#post235970
The only caveat is that it will most likely come with another perfected SPL. As shown with the latest Sense upgrade, it seems no developers are willing to spend time trying to find a way to root the phone once it has the official rom. I advice anyone who has a rooted phone not to upgrade to any future official rom, but wait until a chef provides a rooted version.

We will get 2.1 + Sense UI. If we don't Canadians will probably have an outrage for being lied to again.
This is hear-say, but after visiting the local TMO Store last night, the HTC Rep had come in and said there was going to be an Eclair update for coming at the end of Feb. This was said to be a 2.0 OTA Update and no mentioning of 2.1.
Personally I don't believe that site. Why would htc abandon a product they launched 6 months ago? They kept updating the G1 for over a year.
We know for sure the Hero will get 2.1 (HTC tweeted it today)
http://twitter.com/htc/status/9197263393
They haven't tweeted about the Magic but other news sources have indicated the Magic will receive 2.x in Q2 this year.
If we don't get an official release (which I think is unlikely) then I bet we could use bits from the official rom to improve the existing AOSP roms, since the hardware is so similar.
Lets not get too upset and all go and buy nexus ones just yet ...
Maybe they are talking about the US 32B version of the Magic? Rogers 32A version has almost twice the memory as the 32B.

50% more actually not double.
Again, like I was saying HTC themselves promised Android 2.1 + Sense UI for the Rogers HTC Magic.
At least from that you can expect everyone else with a 32A device to be able to use a cooked ROM based on that official RUU.

Sounds good to me. Time to call retentions and see whats up cause I only extended my phone on the promise of 2.1. If it isn't coming time to get them to cancel my account.
Ah, OK, so it makes sense now. Seems like Rogers 32A will get the update and all the rest with Vodafone 32B will have to start thinking about N1 if we want 2.1....
So sad...
Well not really, when the 32A gets the official update we'll be able to port those builds to the 32B, as they are the same inside apart from the RAM differences. The drivers we need to get eclair running nicely will be in those builds so we have nothing to worry about. The best roms are always on XDA anyway, rather than from the network providers.
Anyway besides all that I still think we'll get an official update for the 32B Magic.
There were a lot of stories at the beginning of this year about the Magic getting Eclair.

Straight from HTC
@xyq105113: Please get your facts straight and your charm polished.
First of all: if you never been promised a 2.1 update for your magic i don't see what this complain is about. What will be next? That you want the 3.0 as soon as that will be released. You can't expect that old hardware will support or get updated software just be happy if you do.
Another thing is: welcome to xda developers who actually makes this update possible for you already unless you got an unhacked spl. If that's your problem then maybe a little research before buying or updating official software would have been a good idea.
My guess is that since HTC already announced update for the Hero and for the Rogers magic it will most probably come to all non-google branded magics.
But again i don't get why everyone got that attitude cause they haven't got any updates for their older mobiles.
There is several reasons for not giving updates to everyone.
1) More sales.
2) Less work making new drivers
3) Less support cases cause of people who can't figure out how to update.
4) Less phone replaced cause of people ****ing up under update.
5) Did i mention more sales ?

thank u for explaining, but there are still several bugs in those roms, right?
Plus since magic been published did htc ever update our magic once? Even Tatto have its 1.6 sense UI rom, why not update our magic, due to magic is still for sell, it seems no reason not to update magic. What I want is just a official 2.1 rom for my magic after this long time since 2.1 been published.
P.S. I do not consider my magic as a too old hardware to be updated, my BB 8320 still get new roms........

Many countries got an update for their magic just not an android update but update with Sense and Android market for those without. Think we all would love an official update with the new Sense and Android 2.1 for easy rom cooking to Magic. But i would think twice before updating the RUU if it comes, cause it might be impossible for root it for a while after if it will ever be possible after that update. I wouldn't consider it old yet either and hoping for the update as well. But i'm just happy that i got xda where i can get most of the things i need. But the mobile industry is moving really fast at the moment and i think that HTC decided to put focus on getting market share instead of pleasing their existing customers. Then we can discuss what the smartest move is in this case, but somehow i think HTC know what they are doing at the moment. But again i actually think that non-google branded HTC magics might get the update now that its official that Hero and Rogers magic does, cause with that done it wont require much work to release it for the rest of us.
But maybe they wont cause of the reasons i mentioned last post for not giving us the update. For now we can only hope, and enjoy the work the developers does for us to make it possible to have a good and stable HTC sense rom running Android 2.1

as long as i'm using 32a, regardless of any carrier, will i be able to use that official rom on any htc magic 32a?

All US android phones to receive android 2.1.
HSPA has nothing to do with ROM version. It's a setting in build.prop. I have HSDPA and HSUPA working on Donut, as do many other people. It's on by default in CyanogenMod and probably some others.
Look in this thread for how: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595108
are we another day closer to 2.1?
