Hero or wait for pulse ? - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi everyone.
Im about to take the plunge with my first android based phone. I have just returned the compact 5 / Diamond 2 to tmobile as I wasnt impressed with it. Ive had windows mobile before but just couldnt get on with it on the diamond 2 and the phone did not ring anywhere near loud enough unlike the hero that I have had a play with.
So phoned tmobile today to order the g2 / hero and tmobile tell me there will be a 3rd android phone as in the pulse. Also instead of using my upgrade, I could put my contract sim in the pulse and buy it outright for 174 pound.
Bar a larger screen, hardware looks identical. I am aware the hero is a high end device, but when you look at the specs of the pulse which is supposed to be a low to midrange handset, there only looks to be the camera resolution thats different.
Any news on the tmobile firmware update as yet please as well?
Any satnav software that comes with any recommendations, and hopefully free.
Your thoughts and advice please ???
Cheers
Paul

Get the G2/Hero.
The new firmware should be available for it in a few days. T-Mobile have set themselves a deadline of 28th September to have it avaialble. I know this from official posts on the UK T-Mobile official forum.
Free SatNav? You could try AndNav2 but it's still very much a work in progress. CoPilot Live 8 is reasonably priced and a good product.

Telus HTC P4000 = CDMA Hermes?

Hey everyone,
I've decided to start a post on this cuz i haven't been about to find much on this recently released phone from telus (a canadian carrier). I currently have an HTC TyTN. However, the touchscreen is completely dead. Since this phone isn't sold by any canadian carriers, it's virtually impossible to get it repaired let alone replaced.
I've recently come across the Telus HTC P4000 which was officially launced by telus in april. I noticed the specs are very similar to that of the TyTN except for the following:
-A CDMA phone without a sim card slot.
-256 mb rom vs 128 mb rom
-64 mb sdram vs 64 mb ram? (**i dunno if the hermes ram is SD)
-a QUALCOMM MSM7500, 384 MHz CPU vs a Samsung 400 MHz CPU.
I'm thinking of selling my X01HT and signing up with telus and grabbing that phone. I could really use some feedback on this idea from my fellow Hermes owners. And could use some help measuring the pros and cons.
So far the major CON of going to this phone would be that it's slightly slower and looks to have ZERO upgradability in terms of OS, RADIO, or any type of rom flashing. Meaning no sweet WM6 upgrades from custel or jasjamming or any of the other cool chefs...
Here are some links:
http://www.telusmobility.com/content/clientcare/pcs_east/guides/htc_p4000/htc_p4000.pdf
-user manual (specs can be found here as well)
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/04/17/the-htc-p4000-for-telus-in-the-flesh/
-engadgetmobile article on this phone
Any feedback or thoughts would be great. Thanks guys...
I din't know how much money you want to spend, but expansys do a good range of phones - including the dopod 838 pro (http://www.expansys.ca/)
I think most of these are phone only, without contract etc but I'm sure you can shop around for something with a contract.
Personally for my style of useage I'd spend out on one of the Hermes varieties.
You could also try ebay - maybe pick up a bargain 8525 or an old hermes to repair yours with.
Good luck
I just bought 2 HTC P4000 for some of our work phones. One has been activated so far, and it is working great. It is allot slimmer than the PPC-6700, which I had last year. I am a newbie when it comes to upgrading these things or doing hacks etc, but I am quite happy with the phone so far. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask me and I will try to answer them for you.
thanks guys,
I passed by a telus store today to check it out. The lady was nice enough to take a brand new phone out of its box and run it for me. I got to play around with it for a while and here are my impressions which are mostly positive:
-the slid out keyboard seems to have some kind of power assist feature (not exactly but you know what i mean, think hiptop) which makes it pretty cool and easier to slid out as oppose to having to manually push up the screen till you hear it lock into place (X01HT)
-The HTC P4000 is virtually the same size except just as twelveca stated, it is slightly thinner.
-same white default htc bootscreen + a telus logo screen and wm5 setup. I doubt the possibility of any kind of upgrade unless there are some crazy chefs out there that get their hands on this phone.
-has FN and CAPS lights just like a computer keyboard!
-black keyboard, dark gray screen housing, and a bumpy pattern on the back for added grip.
-I checked out the device info screen and to my surprise, it said it has a !400! MHz CPU as oppose to the 384 MHz stated in the specs. 64 MB RAM, 256 MB Onboard Flash memory confirmed.
-From the few minutes playing with it, it seems to perform at the same level (if not better) as the HERMES.
-Doesn't show any signs of screen alignment problems.
-EVDO High speed wireless capable.
There ya have it, looks like i'm leaning towards buying it. Just have to get over the idea that i won't be able to upgrade roms (for now at least) or use sim cards...But other than that, it seems like a great phone.
Oh i just found a link to a "Complete" review of the P4000 on HF
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1153541
It includes points i forgot to mention as well as ones i didn't even know of...
Here are some of them (note these are compared to the ut starcom 6700):
"
-dual core processor??
- REV A compatible (with software upgrade which Telus has officially announce they will do)
-more buttons on face and sides
-better one-handedoperation
-bigger battery
-better battery life
-better brighter screen
-better 2mp camera with improved software and settings
-AKU 3.3 which brings with it A2DP among other things
"
P4000
Just recently picked one of these up and have had a couple of days to play with it. I upgraded from an Imate PPC (original 2003 edition) and could not be happier.
This is a rock solid PPC, only wish my GPS hardware was compatable, sigh.
I was a little unsure of Telus but after my fiascos with Rogers, i dont expect them to give me half the grief.
cool, i'll be picking one up probably some time next week...just gotta figure out how i'm gunna cancel my plan with fido and transfer the number over...
...maybe we can start a new forum for this phone when more people have it...
Who that knows as to unlock Telus or P4000 ?
HTC TYTN
ji1386, how much do you want for your broken TYTN?
TYTN
ji1386, if you want to sell your broken TYTN, I could use it for parts if unable to fix it. Send me a PM with your offer. Thanks
I have this phone basically since it came out from Telus, and I must say I am quite enjoyikng it. Best Pocket PC phone out, IMO.
This phone is upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.....however, there is no confirmed release date on when this will be. Also, checking the HTC site will most likely get you nowhere as Telus will need to configure this upgrade to have Telus aspects on there, for instance, The Telsus bootscreen, the today themes, etc.
GPS in HTC P4000
The GPS in this phone someone post what u gotta do to get GPS working on this phone in Stand Alone GPS Mode with No A-GPS.

What phone to upgrade to after hermes?

hey guys,
so my contract with t-mobile UK expires in 2 weeks and i'm due for an upgrade. just wondering - what do you guys suggest i move to? things i'd like is in-built gps, exchange synchronization, and a full keyboard would all be nice.
tytnII is worrisome; don't know about that with all the hardware complaints on it, and i don't know whether its worth upgrading to it from the tytn...
what do you guys say?

Right now id stick with the hermes and take advantage of a free standard mobile phone for a while? the kaiser seems to be REALLY good but it doesnt feel like a big enough step up from the hermes (as i would be paying fully for a HTC device) , the only device which is tempting at the mo is the nike (Touch dual) or maybe the polaris (Touch Cruise) but they don't have the hardware keyboard im used to now.
Perhaps if we see a TyTN III over the next year(s) i may be tempted to get in there early.

If you are thinking about more screen resolution, the phones to look at are:
Eten glofiish M800 (640x480 pixels) Gps, Qwerty Keyboard
http://www.gsmarena.com/eten_glofiish_m800-2163.php
the somewhat buggy Toshiba G900 (800x480 pixels) no Gps, Qwerty Keyboard
http://www.gsmarena.com/toshiba_g900-1905.php
or the upcoming Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 (800x480 pixels)
Gps, Qwerty Keyboard
wich is made by HTC and seem to be a slimmer Toshiba G900
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_x1-2246.php
800x480 pixels resolution seems to be great to browse the web and Pdfs !!!
ok up for renewal soooo disappointed by how crap t-mobiles offers are. they're either offering me £10 off my monthly bill (after an 18 month contract) for a new 12 month contract, keep my existing phone. OR, sign up a new 18 month contract and get a couple of crap phones for free, or things like the vario III for £150.
hmm.
so i'm thinking one of:
1) renew contract with £10 off and sell my vario II (ebay, 100 quid or so?), and spend £220 on a new phone on ebay
2) screw t-mobile. switch to someone else now
3) lie in wait and see what new innovations htc comes out with
4) switch to crackberry
thoughts guys?
I decided to stay with t-mobile but switched to pay-as-you-go so I keep my number (I dont like to be rushed into a decision). My VarioII handset is still good for the job in hand. So now waiting for a good handset to appear on the market - maybe the SE Xperia X1 which will be available around Jun 2008 time.
I now have the flexibility to go back on contract (with any Provider as a NEW customer = good deals) and stay on pay-as-you-go and buy a handset. Actually, I have found pay-as-you-go is great! On TMobile I can still enjoy unlimited data package for purchasing 5day pass for £2.50 if you need it....

time to update wizard?

hi. I need your opinions should I update wizard to cruiser or wait diamond or even new gen htc phones?
this wizard is getting old and slow so I need YOUR opinions wizard users!
If you can wait, wait for the Diamond. Vastly superior technology. VGA over QVGA, eGPS over GPS, HSDPA, custom UI (reminiscent of PointUI and iPhone, but good enough to mention). PhoneScoop has a pretty good review of the Diamond here: http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=193
nice article. maybe ill have to wait for diamond. 4GB limit isnt a problem for me, neither is missing SDIO slot.
only thing which doesnt seem good is that 900mAh battery, since these 1300mAh batterys run out of juice pretty fast also.
but yeah 528mhz processor, lots more internal memory than previous ones mm want that.
im afraid of european version cost, since usually when they come here they cost much more than US version.
Perhaps a vacation trip? The US dollar is so weak right now, that Europeans are flocking to the US to sight-see and shop, instead of the other way around!
found and pre ordered it when it comes from nearby htc reseller.. 550€ but they said its going to drop when it comes.
vacation trip to america would cost much over 1000€ + phone could be fun though but wayyy too high priced trip :>
will see also if there comes some other models with as nice or better specs.

Sell Me On The Xperia Please

I am hoping to live thru members of this bulletin board until my Xperia arrives. I am not expecting to get it until Halloween or just after that unless someone can tell me where I can buy one TODAY !!
I thought that by ordering the Google phone from Tmobile it would take the edge off my gadget addiction, but it didn't. So I listed it on eBay. The one thing I liked most about the phone sucked the battery life right out of it - that was the navigation / compass mode.
Any way .. Can someone tell me in their opinion - for the moment, is the Xperia the best phone / pda on the market ?? What do you like best about the Xperia ?
PS .. I see one on eBay for something over $1,000 - I am trying my hardest to NOT buy it and wait for mine - Besides, this one on eBay is black and I think I am sold on silver.
Selling 1 swedish version
Hello I'm selling 1 swedish Xperia if you are interested please reply. It's new and boxed. Price: 550 euros plus shipping.
Sell me too!
I am 99.999% sure I am getting the Touch Pro, but I always have to look to make sure I am not missing out on anything else out there. The G1 has great potential, but I already know I will be somehow running Android on the Touch Pro soon enough so that is no issue. I am curious though as to what the Xperia has to offer that might make me pause on the Pro. If it's just the look of the interface.... non issue.
I'd get a PDA over the G1 anyday. Biggest reason is Android can be ported to any device if you absolutly want it. So best to get the hardware for it! All the reviews I've seen say the Xperia is faster and more responsive then the Touch pro and that Touch flo can be ported to the Xperia. The only thing the touch pro has on the Xperia is probably the keyboard. I'm waiting for November 3rd to come around. They are supposed to annouce the release date for the US version. I can't wait.

Release Date

Uk release date for the HTC Maple/Snap/S510 is due to be 12/13th June - Not long!
I want one. How do I get an unlocked unbranded one?
If you head on over to HTC's website (www.htc.com) you will be able to see the where to buy link and it will give you a number of suppliers or alternatively you can do a google search for 'htc snap'.
All I saw was links to buy through AT&T and T-mo. Im looking for one thats unbranded. Ill start searching after the release date I guess.
Check out some of these links:

Got my snap! It really is brillinat, just setting it all up at the moment.
Tell us some more about it, or shoot a video or something !
Im not shooting video..can not be bothered.
So far i like the slim profile, and form factor, keyboard feels good and battery has lasted over a day and a half with a complete hammering on internet and constand download.
Bad bits, the back cover is a pain to get off, petty i know, but still (you need nails, I have none!). Tab key is in the wrong place, but quickly getting used to that.
Released!
