G1 F-ed Up - G1 General

Sorry about all the posts I'm making but this is probably going to be the last one I make for a while because this is where I'll list all the problems I couldn't find with Search... so everyone chillax, I searched before I posted! =)
1) My Apps won't install... they download fine and all, but after a little bit it says 'Installation Unsuccessful'... someone gave me a code to use but it gave me a message of something like 'No Existing Item' it wasn't item but it was something like that.
2) I'm running Cyanogen 4.0.4 with the xROM theme... there is no settings icon and when I hit Menu and Settings on the Home Screen it Force Closes. I don't know what triggered this but its making me mad.
3) JACxROM keeps Force Closing on me. He had something posted on hid thread for the ROM about this but I just don't understand it.
Thanks! =)

Reboot and enter recovery
Enter console
#parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
rm 1
rm 2
rm 3
#print (this is to find out the size of your card)
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 #### (replace #### with the info from print above)
This will remove the ext and swap partitions thus removing A2SD and swap as possible causes to your problem.
Now put your sd card in a card reader and format with a PC. Download CM 4.0.4 and put it on the card.
Now Reboot and enter recovery
flash the zip file for cm 4.0.4
reboot and test

The reason the code gridlock gave you didn't work is because it was for wiping your ext2/3, and you didn't partition it correctly, hence the no item existed error. you are doing SOMETHING wrong when partitioning which is why you are getting install problems. You need to double, and triple check EVERY letter/number you type when partitioning.

While I agree with crpercodani, I think the best course of action is to repartition and format your sd for fat32 only, get the phone working normal, verify that there isn't another problem, THEN we can go over partitioning for A2SD and or swap.

I agree with what the kind sir above me has said. If we know it is working a-ok WITHOUT a2sd then we will have a much much better idea what the problem is.

Oh forgot to mention...
No themes just yet.

Hope your "developer" friends help you if you even get a response from your other thread. I'll spend my time helping someone who listens and provides feedback. Then again maybe us "other" guys in the help forums aren't smart enough to give you advise.

Are we taking one problem at a time? If so, the first time I tried to Partition I messed up and pulled out my battery. Then I retried and I think I did it kinda good...? So yeah.

enough already
This is your third thread in a week, with the same things in each one. We have all covered possible ways to help you with your problem but yet you have failed to take the advice that has been mention to you like a faulty sdcard, wiping, reflashing and removing your sd, than booting to verify if it is an sd issuse or have not tried another process to try reformating like gparted or ubuntu or even paragon

I don't get it damn it!

Faulty sd card - get new one
Wipe, reflash, boot without sd card - pull your freakin sdcard out
after reflash and boot it up
Try different method of partioning - there are several different ways to do this
Check supreme' sig for doing it in ubuntu
Or read the sticky's
Stop posting new threads - continue in one thread not 10
Or do what a lot of us have done and read damn it
Try the damn search <it's google!!!!!!>
Was that clear enough in simple english to get?

That should be clear enough. If GridLocks instructions here aren't clear enough than I would stop trying to do anything to your phone.

You could always try throwing it against the wall or running it over, than can solve all your problems easily.
How bout this, you can ups the damn thing to me or someone else here, they fix it, send it back to you and you never mess with it again.
Or revert it back to stock
Or sell it and buy a basic phone that requires no work to make it great

How can you do it "kinda good"?... That sounds like you feel you may have done something wrong, so why not just do it again. If you have Cyanogen's latest recovery partitioning is very easy to do in parted.
Nice name also.

Application Data Space Low

I keep getting this notification. I have installed a bunch of apps and have over 3 gigs of internal memory free.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Go through all of your apps and look for one with 99mb of cache... Then clear that cache.
First apps that I would look are email apps.
I don't have any left with that much. The most is gmail with 61, then flash with 12. Can't clear cache in gmail.
.......so uninstall some apps. did you really need to make a thread about this???
Uh yes because iud you could read you would see that I installed apts and have around half the memory free. No need to be a jerk
This happens when your /data/data partition gets full. The partition is only 150 Megs. This requires you to monitor program caches and data storage. It sucks but until a work around is found it's something that has to be dealt with. I found that stored text messages are a huge data hog. What's more, the Barnes and Noble ebook reader has a 10 Meg file it stores in the data/data partition. Removing these alleviated my issue for the time being. Best thing is to be selective about what you install. I mean really, do I NEED three GPS speedometers?

This issue is a real nuisance. I'm glad a thread was opened about this because Smabbage had a great explanation. An explanation I haven't seen at that level of detail.

Since the /data/data partition is so relatively small, I just wish more app developers would store their applications data on the SD card by default. Some of the newer apps do.
Dumping all my old texts seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the tip Smabbage!

wait- not resolved
oops- the data space message is back. I do have a lot of apps. I tried uninstalling a couple of the largest but no go. I installed cachemate but when it runs it says there is no cache to delete!
Is there a way for me to manually inspect the data space to see what is hogging it?
I used Root Explorer and bounced in and out of all the directories in the /data/data folder until I found the main culprits. For me, Barnes and Noble Nook app, Pandora Cache, Double Twist Cache, Amazon Kindle, just to name a few. Your mileage may vary.

I really wish this is something either htc or google would address... Its pathetic to have a phone with so much space in it and have to delete my text messages periodically to send a new one. So what if I have useless apps, I recall buying a phone advertised as having 8 gigs internal storage, and 1 gig onboard memory. Come on HTC, get on the ball and fix this low space issue...

From what i understand this is not a device issue that HTC has control over but rather a software issue. I too was excited to get 8GB on the phone and hoping to not have a need for an SD card. When the Incredible came out, almost nothing had support for accessing internal storage, now there are some.
I just got this message for the first time last week. Deleting some 1000 sms made the message stop.
Sent from my Incredible
Heh. We need a partition manager for rooted phones. Then we can allocate more space for the /data/data folder and Bob's your uncle, no more worries. Of course, it hinges on whether it's even possible.

One culprit for me was Swype Installer which after clearing data cleared up about 3-4 MB of space on data/data. I think it might've been from an install that didn't complete properly so it cached the program. After uninstalling and reinstalling Swype, Swype Installer now only shows 28KB for data (instead of 3-4 MB).
So, I was getting this error message for a couple weeks now - but (like everyone else), my phone showed I had PLENTY of memory! It did't get annoying until things stopped working in the past couple days:
- updates wouldn't download
- new downloads wouldn't download
- Google Talk stopped working completely
- gmail wouldn't update my inbox or download new emails
- screen touch response was getting more flaky
among other things.
So, I tried all of the things mentioned here and on other similar threads to no avail. The problem didn't get any better in spite of my best efforts.
I went into my Application manager prefs and viewed them by size instead of A-Z. One of the larger ones was Flash, which I downloaded and update for not too long ago. On a whim, I decided to uninstall it and reboot (again). Guess what...
Problem is gone.
No more error message. All of the problems I had above are gone. Everything is working as it should - except for Flash of course.
I'm curious to see if others that are having similar problems would try this (deleting Flash) and seeing if you have the same results. I would like to know if it's really Flash causing the problem, or simply the deletion of one of the larger apps that's fixing it. Because if it's Flash, that's a big deal.

i honestly don't know, well have to see though, we need someone to void their warranty. but it could fit in there, comparing the micro sdhc card dimensions and a sim cards dimensions. but we'll see in due time.

I already popped the sticker (which does say VOID)... and it is back there. an 8 GB for me...
Does anyone know how to hard reset? all the other SD cards i tried are not seen or used... Phone boots up to 15meg space... and even a reset through phone does nothing...
Oddly, when i put other card back in (even when using reset function with a different card ) everything is still in place and good to go... no lost settings or anything...

I have two different branded SD cards, one is class 6, the other class 4. I cleared all data off and even wiped all partition info ( both are clean as a whistle ). No Go.
Also, taking the card from the dell and slapping it into the pc shows something, but no data block for creating (or deleting ) partitions.
Hmm. My sticker doesn't say VOID on it anywhere, it's just a piece of black tape. My coworker had the same thing. He removed the sticker but can't figure out how to remove the card from the slot since there is no spring assist and nothing to grip. How did you remove it? I imagine the filesystem on the SD card is unique to WP7 so the next step is to find a way to format a new SD card properly, I would think.

SD card? Im a Dunce

Okay first post and sure this is off to a great start, because its probably like the lamest question ever....
I see the SD card partition on the Nexus S and for the LIFE of me can't actually figure out what its for.
If USB storage is for holding media and info then what is the SD for?
At one point i was getting memory errors from apps and it said SD memory at capacity or something like that and the limit seemed VERY small. I ran a cache cleaner and removed some clashing apps (i believe) and it seemed fine after that.
Is the SD the internal RAM?
feel free to call me any derogatory name you like as long as you give me a wiki or explanation. I tried searching the forum and google but it just brings up posts where people already talk about SD with knowledge.
thanks

The SD card is a non removable flash storage device. It's the storage you see when you mount USB storage.
Apps will cache data to the SD card, this is where any downloads go, any picture s or movies you take, etc. It is 16 GB of general storage (separate from the 1GB of internal storage).
Think of it as 'built-in'. For all practical purposes, there is a sdcard, which behaves just as it would on any other android, but you can't remove it. I'm not sure if it is physically part of the internal memory or not. I suspect there is one 16GB chip that is partitioned for internal and /sdcard.

i am a bit stumped then. when it gave me the sd capacity it was NO WHERE near 16g's. it was like 800mbs or something. this is why my slacker kept crashing out and giving me a memory error.
is there a way in the OS to see the SD capacity? I had an app that told me but got rid of it cause i think it was also part of the crashing issues i had.
so is what your saying the SD is what you see when you USB your phone to the computer? its that root DIR. In clockwork i can see a USB and SD dir separately i believe but ill have to check again
thanks
on a side note does anyone else have slacker issues. this is how the entire subject came up to me anyway

Slacker works fine for me, always has (outside of it's poor ability to precache the next song).
For Storage go to Settings -> Storage. USB storage is the SD card.
What space you see when you plug in the NS to your computer's USB is the SD card.
It is not the root folder of the whole phone.
Under the "Settings -> Storage" window on your phone, the "USB Storage" is we are calling the SD card.
The Internal Storage is what the phone needs itself.
Here is mine:

Because of all the music on my NS & the fact almost all my apps are there too, I am sucking up approx 3 gigs of SD or USb storage space.
The NS is sucking up approx 800megs of space, of the 1 gig available to it.
As for your Slacker issues, Although I am not familiar with this application, have you tried just reinstalling it.
Heeter
cool thanks guys.
just couldnt figure whyd they name something twice.
As for slacker i beleive it was a mix of
juice defender (which i may try again solo to see if its really that good)
ad blocker (which was jsut something i tried but never really needed, good riddance)
and like these two cleaners which i dont remember the names of.
Now i have NG cache cleaner which is nice and my slcaker seems to be normal again
wasnt sure if the adblocker was seeing the commercials in slacker as ads and trying to block them out causing problems so i got rid of that first.
as the other guy said the pre chaching was HORRIBLE at times making me think the app locked. but after those removals it worked fine with occassional lag betweensongs

Why does Android clutter up your SD card?

Why does Android clutter up my SD card with so many folders and crap. I have a class 10 16 GB card so space isn't an issue. I'm just a bit OCD and when I connect my phone to my computer I see 20+ folders from different apps and what not.
Basically, why doesn't Android better organize all this stuff into one folder? Sure I could make them hidden but I don't see why there needs to be so many folders for so many different things. Where does it all go if you don't have an SD card?
Hopefully someone can offer some insight into this madness.

Agree with OP. I spend a lot of my time on my phone in the SD via root explorer. And the amount of folders NOT created by me is dizzying. And I've wondered the same about what if no sd'. Maybe that's why the the android devices before froyo performed sooo poorly. Froyo was the first iteration of android that supported move to SD. Maybe before froyo, all of that crap went to the /data partition of the painfully memory-limited devices of the time. Thus the poor performance.
Just a stab at it. Dunno. Thinking out loud - but that's what General is FOR.
But yeah, I wondered about the no SD thing before, too. And I came from winmo, where I kept a really organized SD.

It would be nice if it wasn't so bad. But for the most part it is not androids fault, its the apps you have used, I have had to get rid of so many, but now im built back up over time and trying new apps out.
Agree here also..hell ICS adds a bunch of folders I don't use..
Alarms,pictures,podcasts,music,notifications,ringtones to name a few..
It's not Android, it's dip**** developers.
All app data is supposed to be stored in [sd_card]\Android\data\[name_of_the_app]. To make it really easy they provide developers a method that gets the directory for their app called getExternalFilesDir().
Email the dip**** devs and tell them to start using getExternalFilesDir. I can tell you that TitaniumBackup and a few others have point blank refused to use that directory, as I have already emailed them.
NewsRob and a few others indicated they would look into moving to that directory during the next major release.
Thanks for the info.

I have become so accustomed to reinstalling OS's after dealing with annual re installation of Microshaft OS's it doesnt bother me anymore.
Hell they are closed source, I pay big $$$ and have just as many issues just like another unmentioned OS.
I will take open source (Linux, Android, FreeBSD.. others) and the ability to create, not to mention share at no cost, unlike those others who charge $$$ any day of the week.
Lol, couldn't agree with this any more. Files and folders are about the only thing I'm OCD about and it bugs me to no end.
Yup, android and android developers ought to do something about folders cluttering mem cards, I also came from windows mobile before I started out with android, windows had a dedicated folder for application's data called program files, android or atleast developers should stick to the default android folder on sd cards to minimize the clutter

Fix:Enable Windows Explorer thumbnails by removing MTP permanently GS3(screenshots)

Hi guys.
I inadvertently found this out by mistake when I have been trying to get my damn phone to even connect in Windows 7 64bit. Man it's been giving me the sh!ts.
I will quote my post from another thread on the forum. And see the evidence in the screenshot below.
It turns out that we don't even need MTP drivers to do any sort of transfer in Windows. What a load of bollocks we have all been fed.
My device manager shows no trace of MTP anywhere now (thankfully) and my Phone appears as a portable device like it should.
Enjoy and Merry Christmas

Ok guys,
just updated to 4.3 and have had no end of issues with this MTP problem. I have searched for weeks for an answer and nothing worked that was suggested. I think I have done like 10 - 20 factory resets on this F%#*ing thing, and it was never the phone's problem in the first place, definitely a Windows problem in my case.
I tried a combo of things for my last try right this very minute and I have success.
I searched for the MTP driver in the registry. Note: Make a backup....I didn't I f*%#ing hate this piece of sh!t so I went ahead and deleted it. You can do as you please though, I am mighty angry so I didn't care.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{EEC5AD98-8080-425F-922A-DABF3DE3F69A}
Instead of looking for upper filters I removed it totally
I had to change permissions on that object to do so, then inside permissions take ownership and tick child keys and subkeys
Uncheck inherit from parent
If it pops up a dialog pops up choose add from the options
You will have to do this for several tabs in this permissions of the registry. Once you delete this, unplug your phone and plug it back in again. You will get the warning of failed MTP drivers as I did.
Now go to Device Manager and instead of uninstalling the failed MTP driver yellow Icon, this time scroll down a little further to another section that says ADB Device. (See attached picture Fix_MTP_Error1.png)Now click uninstall on that driver, check the box that says "Would you like to delete this driver" click yes. Let it remove.
When it is removed a Windows pop up Warning appears telling you you need to reboot. Don't reboot. ignore it. Look down at the system Tray and you will see your little installing driver swirly thing doing it's business for once.
When it finishes, Open explorer and you will notice another thing different. Your device will be sitting in My Computer, however it will have a new Icon and it will now say Portable Device and NOT the device name like GT-I9305 in my case (See attached picture Fix_MTP_Error2.png)
At this point I clicked on it anyway cause it obviously registered something, right?
Yoooou beauty!!!!!!!!! Hoooraaaaaaah Merry Christmas too me! Merry Christmas too me!!!!
What you will notice however is that the name that you thought disappeared is still there as the device label when you check in the address bar See attached picture Fix_MTP_Error3.png
Edit: By the way, the device name I just noticed now corresponds to the name that is put in as the name of the device when you are in the setup wizard when you first boot up; unlike before it retained the same device name as 4.1.2 just plain GT-I9305 and no full device name, I called mine James' GT-I9305

Guys..... you are not going to believe this!!!!
Check it out. I now have Explorer enabled thumbnails. Man MTP was pissing me off for months when I first got this thing. Do you know how debilitating this is when you don't know what image is what saved on your SDcard. Man it's frustrating.
Hope your guys like this solution it works well :victory::victory::victory:

Some other benefits I am just noticing is that I can now transfer files with the screen completely locked. No need to have the device stay away for 10-20min. Transfer speeds are now super fast and no more pop up errors asking if I still want to transfer the file even if the device doesn't recognise this format. All that BS is gone.
You can now permanently organise your files like you would in Windows Explorer. No more track title, Track number and Rating [email protected] in the attributes section either.
All right click explorer context menus are standard menus.
I will take more screenshots later
I am a very happy camper now
I now no longer have ANY drivers what so ever try to load in the taskbar when i connect my phone. My phone is available instantly. I can also copy multiple files at the same time into different parts of my SDcard and not get the 'Device is busy' error.
More and more things to suggest that MTP is a crock of sh!t that Micro$oft and $am$ung want us to believe to support DRM. Thats what all this is about, it's got nothing to do with what ever BS they have fed us.
Man what a revelation.
I have figured out why this has all happened to each and everyone of us. When we pug in our devices, Windows detects that it is an MTP device, Remember all those Galaxy S2 users out there where we used to have UMS Mass storage and then a few updates came and we were forced to go MTP again. Well that is only programatically in the Android interface telling Windows we need to have an MTP driver.....BEFORE Googles ADB driver can be loaded. Once the MTP device is flagged, MTP drivers are loaded and different ADB driver is loaded instead of the Google one....the one that enables all the traditional Windows Explorer like functions on the device. Nothings changed is what I am saying, only our belief that we NEED to run MTP drivers.
Removing the registry entry for the whole MTP driver meant that it can no longer be called to load no matter what. At least it is failing for a reason I say. Now the second part where you are asked to reboot to unload the driver.....that part there is a complete lie told to our faces. What that is is a white lie. A lie we believe most of the time. What it means is that yes we need to reboot to unload and reload "their drivers" and we click yes, because the Google ADB driver never gets to finish installing. Clicking no allowed the original proper driver to load and register. Once registered, I now no longer am asked to install any sort of drivers. When ever I plug in my phone it works straight away. Ever waited impatiently for 10min for the MTP driver to load? Yeah well not anymore. Force unload it, get rid of it, seyonara forever MTP!!!

Surely can. I can actually access both even faster than ever before.
Why would I loose connection to the device internal storage? Has this been an issue for other people before?
