General rant - G1 General

I'm an intermediate (Windows) PC user and slightly more technically inclined than most of my friends and family. I bought the Dream because of it's tight integration with GMail and the promise of untold useful apps. I have some awesome apps such as 4 Timers, My Tracks, Wireless Tether, which are useful in my everyday life, and they were all free (although I donate to developers when i think its justified).
My Dream is a vastly better phone in many ways than my last (Nokia N85) and at first I enjoyed flashing new roms and the ability to change my phone in different ways.
I'm currently running Cyanogen 4.0.2 which is a great rom, but to get the most out of it and actually have a sweet running phone it seems almost required to keep up with the changes on the Dream Dev forum, read hundreds of posts, learn how to install scripts and tweek settings, add ext partitions on your sdcard for swap files, know what compcache is, etc etc.
I realise that the devs are doing everything they can to give us the best performance from our phones, and i am very grateful and applaud it. I just wish it was a little easier to keep my phone being the best it can be.
What I am really getting at is that the Dream has its obvious hardware limitations (lack of RAM and rubbish battery life being the most obvious) and I'm kind of getting to the point where I want a new phone that doesn't require so much work.
None of the recent Android phones that I have heard about offer a full 5 row qwerty keyboard. That's what i want, along with perhaps a flash on the camera and a battery that lasts a couple of days with moderate use.
I will not jump ship and go elsewhere, as I love Android, but i think a manufacturer would clean up if they released a phone with the above specs and perhaps 512mb RAM - I know i would buy it in a second, and at any price within reason.
Anyone else feel this way?

You can always just load a rom that is stable and one you like and leave it. Your not forced to always update. If you always want the newest and greatest then you have to update, we all knew that when we started doing this.

The unfortunate thing is that ALL roms i've tried have problems with them - things that dont work, bugs introduced when things are changed. And the devs fix some of the probs in the next release, but then new bugs become apparent.
I know this is the nature of development, and I understand this is only way devs can work to push things forward. But it means living with bugs or upgrading the rom to the next version.
I've not found a rom that has the stabililty/simplicity i really want to just use the phone, and not have to mess around with it all the time, or get annoyed because it wont keep programs like the browser running when you change to do something else, or put up with not being able to rely on the phone for its core function of making and receiving calls and lagging left right & centre.
I think that Android's true requirements are beyond the Dream's hardware - and much as devs try, they will never get past that fact, they will just find progressively better workarounds which "sort of" do the job.

If I were you I would go with an older build instead of a newer one that still has bugs. I'm still on Cyanogens 3.9.5 and have no problems with it at all, no bugs or nothing and happy with it. There is also old dude's builds that I use to be on a long time ago that was stable with no bugs also. But of course since those are older builds it might be hard to find, but if your wanting to take a step back and go to something stable and no bugs let me know I still got all roms on my pc at home.

I am running cyan 4.02 and have no problems whatsoever from it, you really don't have to stay on top off it at all times since you are more technical than most as you say, you can turn around and read the first post and the change log and have a good idea of what is going on. You might have a problem with the costant devolpment but I find it great that people are taking the time to get the android platform better than it was in the beginning, don't be suprised if people from google are on here taking ideas and hard work to make the general source better. The better android gets will only get better with more devolpment, remember the magic and hero just came out still basiclly running the same base as we are. Oh and some of us just got into new contracts and just got their phones and don't want to run out and buy a new phone just cause it has better specs, I want my phone to live up to it's upmost performance possibe by these work arounds so that the next android phone that I get will be 100 times better and more efficent on that hardware

supremeteam:
I think you're right - I've just restored my cyanogen 3.6.5 backup and I forgot how decent it is, using swapper it does respond quite well. To be fair, the only reason i upgraded past 3.6.5 was because I was always having a problem with the HTC_IME - it would never stay on "phone keypad" rather than "qwerty", and it also interfered with my physical keyboard by turning on the "enable prediction for qwerty keyboard" option. Other than that I never had any problems with it. This problem is a BIG annoyance though...

Oh - and the fact that the phone rings (silently) about 3 times before anything is shown on the screen or a ringtone is heard. Forgot about that one...

Also, I'd just like to add that I am in no way bashing cyanogen - i have found his roms to be the best/fastest/most stable out all i have tried, hence why i am using them. I have used a few other roms that were just a joke, with force closes all over the place, and much more serious bugs/errors than i have mentioned here.
Overall, for me, i think cyanogen is the best dev out there, consistently pushing the boundaries of performance, and regularly updating his rom. That much is obvious from the popularity of his roms' threads.

update withdraw
I agree with you that cyanogen is a great devolper but so are jac and drizzy and those other guys that are putting a ton of work into hero, maybe soon we will have a good working rosie but in the mean time I could rant how those are buggy and lag a lot, but even with a cupcake rom you have to break a few eggs to make an olmet and that are the bugs that we are gonna have to live with, truthfully I am addicted like a drug addict to all the constant update from cyan to see what is next to come, just the fact the I have been on 4.02 for a couple days is making me go through update withdraw, I flash a hero rom just for the hell of it just to see the progress, it was on my phone for maybe a whole 10 minutes before I booted my nandroid backup of 4.02

I do appreciate what you're saying - that i want to have my cake and eat it! I suppose that's true in some respects. I can honestly say that my Dream is the best phone I've ever had, and the efforts the devs make to push the envelope are just amazing! Their knowledge and skills are something special - and to do it all for the love of it (and of course the respect of the community!) is definitely to be applauded.
I do also hope that google devs do read these forums, and incorporate the work into the official roms! I think they should pay the devs on xda, as they clearly do a lot of work that google ought to have done!

I hope that google does donate to these devs because they have done an amazing job with what they have to work with, I just wish I understood programming better and had the patience for it, I think my phone is better than my computer now, wait anything is better the my computer right now since I burned out my power supply. By far this is the best phone I have ever owned and now I am a android lifer because of the devs. When I first got my phone, it was worthless to me before I rooted it, good thing I found xda back when I had my wing so I knew right where to go and by the end of the first day I had it, it was already rooted

If google pays the devs or give them jobs then we will have to wait long time for our update and cool stuff, they need to just donate lots of money to them so they keep hooking us up first at xda and not the general masses all at once, I don't think they could handle the general awesomeness

When do you think the G1 will reach its end of life?

Considering its limited memory, I was wondering when everyone thinks the G1 is likely to reach the end of its usefulness.. especially as android develops and requires better hardware to power it.
Any ideas?
I know for certain this topic has been discussed in this subforum atleast two times. Maybe you could join the discussion in those threads?
I know you weren't looking for an answer like this but I suppose it depends on the actual user of the phone, when I had my LG Vu (I know its not a smart phone) I loved it for about a week and absolutely needed a new phone, while my father has his LG Vu and uses it all the time and doesn't even think about getting a new phone since his does the job.
To me this phone will be good for a year or two before I decide to move further, unless I'm influenced to get a different phone which I probably would be
I'm hoping that Android in develop and improve in such a way that it will optimize the use of the current hardware. Optimize the hardware drivers, improve the coding, etc.
Considering that the Dream, Magic, Hero all have the same CPU, I do hope they make more progress on optimizing it for the CPU.
As long as there's a single dev still doing something for G1, it will not die. And after that it will still take some time.
Just go to the forums of some of the really old devices - they're still active.

True, I still visit the Tmobile Shadows forum on this site and there are still roms being cooked for it.
I change phones almost every year if not 2 times a year....but havent changed my phone since I got the G1 because...and it still impresses friends almost every week....

This is so true. I first found this site when I got an HTC Wizard. When I got it the model had long since been discontinued, but the developers here were still active. With what I got here it managed to put an old phone on par with many new models.
Personally until an android phone comes out with a significantly better processor, screen, camera, and with a physical keyboard, I'm probably not going anywhere.
G1 will die when someone releases a phone with twice the processing power, hardware-accelerated 3D, a decent camera (5+ MP, autofocus, flash) true multitouch screen, and at half the power consumption.
it may never truly die
Just Google "nanoloop" to see how long a cult object can outlive its perceived consumer life cycle. I see the G1 as having great potential for achieving cult status, due in part to its homely chin.
Like those above have said i honestly don't see this ever dying out. This was and is the first Android phone and for the fact i see it always being around being worked on.
The G1 will die:
1. After the iPhone dies
2. After all the devs stop developing <- highly unlikely
3. When T-Mobile makes a huge mistake
Just my two cents.
Cult Status probably not but long lifetime
The G1 in my opinion does not have that much of a cult status potential since today the lifecycle is wa quicker than in 1989. I mean the GB was produced for like 8-10 years! Mine still works and would never sell it or give it away.
I know that I will want a new phone in probably a year (or whenever the next nice android device WITH a hardware keyboard and a better camera + batterylife) will come out. But even then I will keep my G1 as second navigation device? GPS dataloger? Mobile Router? Remote Control?....
there is so much great softwware that works great on the G1 hardware and unless you dont want to run som stupid 3D UI or game on it I dont see a reason to get rid of it.
with all my respect to all those who love their G1: i would like to give my opinion;;;;;
this phone (G1) is a complete crap, it does not worth a penny, and it is a BIG failure for Tmo, Google, and HTC. it is nothing but a piece of sh***. they should have done a lot more development and testing before they released it to the public. they did not give it to us for free,, we paid a lot of $ for it. and it DOES NOT WORK.
sorry for the language but honestly i consider my G1 as the worst purchase i have made in my whole life. it is a FRAUD and is AREADY DEAD.

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man." Haha. But on a serious note and I mean no offense by this but if you have so much hatred for the G1 why are you on this forum? Some people pay way more for a phone that does less and is way worse than you believe this phone to be. Granted everyone is looking for different things. Perfect example a co-worker bought a blackberry bold and hated it with a passion, his son however loved it (me I would never consider paying more for what I deem an inferior phone). So it is all personal preference, but I don't see this phone dying anytime soon unless another phone with better specs and a full keyboard comes along.
dear BSDADON and all:
Iam here on this forum trying to find solutions and fixes for things and issues of the G1 that should NEVER have been issues to begin with. example: apps2sd;;;;; how come Tmo and Google sell the phone without this feature and with almost no internal memory????? and what is more funny is that they give you the market app??? where are we expected to install apps????
another example is the email client: they shipped the phone with email that does NOT work with exchange servers,,,,, and even when you find a server that is supported (POP3), then the only way you can empty the trash is to uninstall the application.... WTF ?????? isnt that a FRAUD????
the basic functionality of the G1 is compromised FOR NOTHING..... there are many times when the phone fails to wake up on incoming calls....
all the things that people are looking for here are things that should have been supported by the first release of G1.....

Man... you should probably pop a valium or something. It's a phone, not genocide.
- internal memory. This is obviously a weakpoint, but it doesn't affect everyone equally. For example I only keep about a dozen apps installed at any given time. My guess is most users who have hundreds of apps installed are not using them all on a frequent basis.
- exchange email. First, you have to understand that the G1 is targeted firstly as a consumer device. Most consumers do not need exchange mail access. That said, there is nothing keeping Android implementers from adding exchange support if they wish, which is exactly what we're seeing HTC do now on some of their self-branded phones.
- incoming calls. I've never had my phone fail to wake or ring on an incoming call. Perhaps this is a network issue or you have a custom android build installed? Generally speaking the "stock" builds are very responsive to incoming calls. There is a thread in the dev subforum that roughly compares various builds and their incoming call alertness.

Too bad you have so many issues with the G1.
How many apps do you have installed and how many do you actually use? I doubt most people have more than 30-40 apps installed that they used more than a few times. It has enough space for at least that many and probably more.
Not all phone support Exchange, in fact most don't. Even iphone didn't for a long time. Android does have the ability to use Exchange now if you have the right official or custom build. It is not 'fraud' when a feature is missing or overlooked. If you go overboard with how you describe issues, people won't take you seriously.
I have not read any issues with G1 being unresponsive on receiving calls on the official build. If you are having unresponsive functionality while using a custom build or any app that may be conflicting, then it is not a problem with the G1. I've experience slowness when I used the overclock app, but I had underclocked it to 128mhz. That was MY fault. If you are having problems with the official G1 build with no apps installed, than maybe it's time to talk to T-Mobile and get it replaced since nobody else has that problem.
In an ideal world, everything would be perfect on the first release. It's almost never that way. There are very few exception to this, but they are probably never always perfect either. I suppose NASA or Dept of Defense could get the first release to be perfect.. but DoD has over $700,000,000,000 budget. Also the phone would cost more than what most people would want to pay.. also it would take a long time to before it got released..
For me, as long as the is still workin its useful until something else catches my eyes.. but nothin haven't yet and there so much u can do with the g1.
EDIT- yea if there is atleast one dev still grindin the g1 will never die
I'm not going to answer certain inane rantings (see above), I only feel the need to say the following.
Look at the forum for the HTC wizard. It has seen very little traffic since 2008. On the other hand, I would advise people to keep their wizards rather than buy a newer phone, because of what we do here on XDA. It's making the software do incredible things that makes hacking what it is. It's what makes open source glorious. Personally, continually buying new things just because the hardware is better only supports the standard microsoft/apple/ibm/everyotherestablishedcompany method of releasing new hardware with primitive software implementations. Just look at what we've done with the dream so far:
Apps to SD
Media to SD
Root Access
Full CPU Scaling
VPN Access
Themes
Scripts
Volume Hacks
Faster Charge Times
Better WIFI and Bluetooth system integration....
the list goes on. And as long as the Dream remains the easiest android phone to root, it's going to keep extending.

The state of Android homebrew.

When the G1 came out it was the only Android powered device so modding it worked for everybody. And it was just one brand, HTC, so this forum was a one stop destination for modding our phone.
However, things have changed, now there are multiple phone with incompatible hardware from different manufacturers. Now a custom rom made for the G1, won't work on a DROID for example and vise versa. This complicates things quite a bit.
Right now Cyanogen mods are the best thing for our G1 and maybe the best thing for Android as a whole. I'm used to the build in tether capability and apps to SD and compcace and the other perks of a modded rom. But if I wanted to upgrade my phone, I would lose it all.
There are no Cyanogen mod for anything other than G1 and myTouch phones as far as I know and if I were to upgrade to DROID, I would lose root, lose tether, lose apps to SD, lose everything about my phone that makes it my phone.
Everything I wrote may not be facts, I don't really know what goes on at other forums, but I know that we don't have roms build to run on the DROID and we don't have them built to run on the HERO hardware, it's all for G1 and myTouch, and it seems to me that if I don't ha.ve on of those phones, I lose everything.
I do understand that this forum is for HTC devices which DROID and a few other's are not which is why I don't see homebrew for them. Is there a another website similar to this that supports all Android hardware?
These are thoughts that have been running through my head lately. If I am totally wrong here, please let me know.
I would say check out websites such as androidcommunity.com, androidandme.com, phandroid.com. The developers might not be on there but you can probably find links to where there are custom roms for the phones.
And you are right about different phones having different development oppurtunities. I thought about this today and realized that the next android phone I get not only has to be what I want but also be a popular phone that will attract developers such as cyan, maxisma, jac, manup and everyone else. My best guess and hope is that it will be a snapdragon android handset, hopefully for T-Mobile USA.
What we'll end up having to do is pick our phones based on it's community support and what kind of home brew is available for it.
The reason I love the G1 is the fact that it's rooted and has a large community. This phone is the best on the market, all things considered, because the rooted OS allows so much.
If and when the Droid is rooted, when a GSM version is released, and when it has T-Mo's 3G bands, I will move to it. But all those may not happen for another year or more. If you haven't played with a Droid yet, do so. Incredible speed and the best screen I have ever seen on a phone. Till then, G1 all the way.
The man is right, we have a problem on the dev side.
I think though, once 2.0 gets standard, we'll only need root for a few things like tethering and setting the CPU clock. Really cyanogen's only advantage is optimization, but once 2.0 and snapdragon rolls around, who cares? We'll always want to tinker, but it won't eclipse getting the phone you want.
The big problems right now are that the market isn't getting what it needs. Nothing compares to the HTC widgets, yet instead of cloning them on the market, we try and run a ROM that doesn't even work on our phones! We still don't have BT in Hero and it may just never happen.
2.0 will be what we need as a base, but the market needs our help now.
I'd contest the cyanogen are the best rom's.. maybe for someoen who wants to flash an upgrade every 3 days.. but for the majority of users.. Dwang is the way to go. Lengthy discussion about this, is over here..

Thanks but this thread is not about who has the best rom.
The point is, when you get a new Android phone, your rom of choice won't be available for it. So what do you do?

I think we all get it already, YOU are dwang's biggest fan
But, to stay on topic. My G1 is the first HTC device I've ever owned and I've only discovered XDA since I've had it, and I think that because of the community involvement here and the custom roms that have come out, I will definitely lean towards another HTC phone when I look for my next upgrade, and it will definately be an android phone.
Also another thing to look at is the availability of the phones that are out to actual dev's. Unless people are donating phones, I doubt everyone can just run out and pick up all the latest devices, and network restrictions/preferences that come along with them.
I think the easiest solution is as follows:
1. Find the dev you like best.
2. Find the phone you like best.
3. Buy phone you like best.
4. Buy/Create a donate link to get said dev the same phone.
Assuming said dev doesnt turn around and craigslist the phone you bought him/her, you have (hopefully) ensured said dev will migrate and develop on your favorite hardware.
Not the best solution but probably the most reliable.

For real.
Alec, you're like the little annoying brother that no one wants to be around.
Grow up, let your balls drop, and enjoy your phone, your life, and whatever rom you want.
But, you don't have to go around dissing well-respected devs.
The Droid hasn't been out long enough for a community to gather around it. Many of the Android big names are waiting to get GSM versions before tinkering.
Also, remember that the HTC Dream was in circulation well before it launched last year. The Android development phone is identical to the Dream, with the only difference being some swish art on the back cover. The hardware and software were free-flowing long before it landed in our hands. In contrast, the Droid was a much more secretive launch; we've only just got Eclair source code, and the SDK was kept under wraps by a non-disclosure agreement (probably to conceal the nuclear bomb that is Google Maps Navigation).
I find the cracking of the Droid to be inevitable. The poor thing is going to be broken just as much as our Dreams were. Just give it time.
As for ROMs being available over a span of phones, I'm not sure that's even a good idea. Android variants like XROM, cyanogenmod, The Dude's ROM, yadda yadda... they're all about maximising the capabilities of the Dream. Not the Droid, the Dream. Adding in features that the hardware can support, changing CPU frequencies, Apps2SD, all that jazz. Droid ROMs will be built around adding in core features, like Apps2SD, and whatever else the Droid has tucked away. Likewise, speed optimisations may not be portable between phones, as what gives the Dream a boost may hinder the Droid.
For me, features of a ROM are not the best part of homebrew Android builds. The best part is being able to upgrade your phone outside of the carrier's say-so. If T-mobile have no plans to push Eclair to Dreams, I will install it myself. I am not tied down by the say-so of a room full of suits three thousand miles away. If T-mobile don't include an app that I like, such as the IM app or the Amazon MP3 store (which T-mobile UK don't), I can get ROMs with them myself. If a carrier would rather I didn't tether without paying for my bandwidth twice, I can do it anyway, so long as I'm not an idiot.
You may have guessed that I have a very dim view of cell carriers.
With root, we are free to do as we like. This is the real killer feature of homebrew, and the Droid will benefit from it too.
Anyway...

You seem to have almost got my point but not quite. Of coarse DOID doesn't need Cyanogen MOD specifically. But would you buy an Android phone if there weren't a mod that lets it do the things that we are used to and have only become available by modding? Apps to SD, tethering, themeing?
Sure DROID might get all these things though a custom rom but we won't see it on this website. The problem is that things will get too spread out and hard to find with all these new hardware options.
What would be nice is a rom that works on nearly every Android device that just adds root access to the phone and some basic universal packages like A2SD and tethering etc. That way you can buy any Android device you want and still have these basic privileges.
Do you think something like that would be possible?

Beats me, man. I'm not a developer. But I think it's unlikely.
For the DROID (and other/future android phones) is Apps2SD really necessary? The only reason why we need it on our phones is because of the pathetic amount of internal space the G1 has, the same goes for Swap Partitions etc.
As long as people buy the phone there is always going to be someone who is smart enough to work on rooting it IMO. And even without root what do you really lose? The only things I think I would really miss are Wireless Tether and Bluetooth File Transfer (Which I THINK is in 2.0 anyway).
I'm not buying a new phone until it's rooted and Cyanogen has it too.
My biggest requirement for any android phone..and any cell phone in general is the keyboard. I bought the G1 because of the keyboard and lucked out with the high number of developers available for it. I didn't find this place for several months during the time when the grandfather of the G1 mod program was still active =) JF!. I enjoyed all the modding and updating because I personally feel that the phone is, well mine. And I should be able to do what ever I want with it. I had picked up the V3C Razer because it could play MP3's. I get it home and then discover that the Verizon Nazi's completely locked down that feature so you where forced to use their service at an additional cost. Of course the motorola dev/repair/store software allowed us to get in a enable the various features that Verizon required to be locked. I also love the Aps2sd. No matter what phone you have, the internal memory will never be enough. And with the Cliq supporting 32gig sd cards, a full keyboard, and NOT verizon was enough for me. I'm patient and confident it will be rooted eventually. If not, I still have my G1 and I still do Cyanogen updates and play around with it. And when my contract is up with Tmob(renewed for the Cliq), I'll see who has the next most popular rooted phone with a keyboard and switch over. I just really hate people telling me how to use a device I own. Its like going to McDonalds and having them dictate what condiments to put on my BigMac and Fries, and then telling me I can only eat it a certain way and which hand to use. If Cyanogen was down with the Cliq, or interested in it. I may be willing to ship him my phone to see what he can come up with.
As far as a universal O/S for all phones, isn't that just the core Android software with specific drivers provided by each manufacturer and custom UI? There should be a way to make 1 O/S for all android phones, then have update packs with the drivers and UI enhancements and add-ons for each android phone released? Not sure of the SPL locks though. Thats a bit beyond me. But i wouldn't think it would be to hard to run Cyanogen on the Cliq or droid provided the correct drivers and such where bundled with it. Kind of like slipstreaming a service pack into a bootleg Windows OS . Each phone eventually has to release the source code which contains the drivers for that phone. Thats how we get the Cliq's OS onto the G1, should work the other way around too. Sounds easy, but Cyanogen's Rom should run on my Cliq, provided the drivers are slipstreamed into it for the Cliq...right? Only problem is root.. :/ hehehe
and there he flames again...alec.baldwin, no one has the problems you have with cyanogen's latest. actually, lets delve into this...what exactly are your "problems" with 4.2.5? PLEASE, answer this question so cyanogen can dutifully fix the "problems" you are having.
You might check out some of the Q/A threads to first learn how to properly flash cyanogen's ROM. It is slightly different than Dwang's because Cyanogen uses the legal method. In fact, check out www.cyanogenmod.com and you might find a ton of useful info on getting cm to work on your phone.
Best of Luck,

Convince me to stay....

I have had the HD2 for a week now and as much as i love it, i am leaning towards returning it for the simple reason that it has windows underneath the hood.
I have had so many problems with trying to keep the data connection alive and setting up synchronisation etc - how i wish this phone had Android-like always on possibilities!
i downloaded the skyfire browser today and was blown away by its ability, but no so much when it tells me you dont have a data connection regularly!
i am sad sad sad today because when i moved my eyes from its ginormous screen to my measly ipod touch i was really unable to browse! the wifi router is brilliant too, when it works
so anyone with pearls of wisdom...convince me to stay
my biggest gripe is that out the box, i have to fiddle around with it so much just to get it to do what every consumer would like it to do - for example the missing task manager, pinch to zoom options etc
if HTC were going to make a phone of this calibre, i wish they didnt feel the need to gag it with winmo
help?
Your first impression is mostly the right one. If you like android more, return your phone ASAP as you've bought a windows phone. Misstakes happen !

I agree with lucid. Sounds like this simply isn't the phone for you.
Since there is task manager and pinch to zoom abilities available, it's not winmo that's gagging the phone, but HTC.
Just want you to make sure your gripes are directed at the correct place.
I have zero issues with my data connection.
I am so tired of everyone wising the Leo had shipped with Android instead of Windows Mobile. I was bored this morning and reading the rather negative reviews of the HD2 on Gizmodo and Engadget, and every other comment on those reviews is about how people love the HD2 but wish it had Android. Well, it doesn't.
I understand you actually have experienced problems with your phone, as opposed to those others who seemingly were hoping by some fluke the HD2 would come out with Android instead of WM as advertised. But then you tell us to convince you to stay with the HD2... if you really have a problem then ask for a solution. If the data issue really annoys you then why would you want someone to convince you to stay with something that doesn't serve its intended purpose for you?
I'm guessing many people bought the HD2 on a whim upon seeing the impressive spec sheet, without ever stopping to think that it ships with Windows Mobile and whether they even liked the platform. Were you one of them? Because you can just look for a solution to your data connection loss problem, instead of trying to get us to list for you the reasons why you should stay with the HD2/WM. The pros and cons of the platform are a just a Google search away.
Edit: Also, you want better pinch to zoom support, eh? Then make sure you stay away from the current latest and greatest Android handset - the mighty and revered Motorola Droid. Yeah, it has no pinch to zoom even though it has the hardware for it. See, HTC aren't so evil afterall.
Personally I think the HD2 is awesome, I know its been annoying with so many problems but there is always a fix. I haven't had any problems with the data connection or sync.
I know HTC should be the ones to sort this out instead of us, however everytime I try a new tweak it sorta makes the phone new to me again.
BSB tweaks is amazing btw, I think it should sort out everything you need, pinch to zoom and screen rotate as well as camera tweak and screen sensitivity all in one application.
Im still on the .143 Rom and theres a .201 (or whatever) rom coming out.
Its getting better and better.
I am waiting to see what the google phone has to offer but the HD2 should be able to hold its own especially since wm7 is coming out...whenever that is.
If you are really hating the HD2 then return it and get an android, winmo isnt that bad. Definite improvement if you remember the older models.

Haha true, I heard the new nexus one doesn't have pinch to zoom either. Actually saying that, they may add it in since it hasn't been released yet.
Everyone bangs-on about Android but has anyone actually lived with an Android device for say a year? No. Who knows what issues and annoyances the platform holds. If it takes off as it appears it will, with everyman and his dog seemingly wanting it, no doubt I will be trying it myself on a handset in the future but right now Win Mo holds no problems for me. The HD2 itself does, but that's for another thread.
First try to be patient and see if you can make the phone work the way you like with the all tweaks around. Have you tried BSB tweaks? most of them are there. For task manager I recommend Showcase, a great solution.
Yeah, there maybe lot's of little issues but most of them can be remedied. If you got it working right, make a full backup with something like spb backup so that everytime something goes wrong and you have to hard reset, you can have everything back in a minute.
And ofcourse better roms will surely come and htc is trying to improve the HD2. Many of the bugs are fixed in the 1.61 rom, have you tried it? not to mention we're so close to custom roms now.
I don't know how familiar you are with windows mobile. If it's your first winmo device, know that one major advantage of winmo over other OSs is that you can tweak and change a lot of things, so there's always hope for better tweaks and better software.
Lastly, if you have tried all I said and there's absolutely no way you can cope with this device, well, I guess it's just not the right device for you.
thank you to everyone that has replied
point taken about leaping without thinking, and yes i guess most issues are resolved by installing tweaks and updates - like u say wotsreallygood, its always getting better and it really is - only today i saw how brilliant it is with flash sites, after installing skyfire browser.
i guess the reason i said convince me to stay is because i want to see light at the end of the tunnel: though there might never be a stable usable android platform on the HD2 i would like to think that most of the creases with the current OS can be ironed out substantially!
and winmo6.5 is a drastic improvement from previous versions - i used to work with old winmo from the times of mda compact III - slowwwwwwwwww in a word
i totally rate HTC as a good phone manufacturer, and i would never buy a motorola even if it had diamonds for keys lol
comments appreciated though, a lot of food for thought!

hi mightmn - thanks - yeah i tried the 1.61 and it seemed to make the device a little unstable for me, so i used the goldcard method and now am using 1.48 - i am yet to install bsb tweaks - i finally managed to work out how to keep my contacts synced but i think that was a problem with my outlook (version 2010 beta apparently this is a known issue and ms will not be supporting winmo sync or something like that?)
i am about to install the BSB tweaks, i think i will keep the phone and worse case scenario for me is that if i do get tired of constantly tweaking and tweaking i shall just sell it lol
And ty for advising on using spb backup, i shall search for that now and keep a regular back up thats very sound advice
Immyl,,
Keep going if you can with all the hints and tweaks on here plus BSB Tweaks. However if you are not getting on with the device then cut your losses and go with something else instead.
I managed to get a 2nd play on the HD2 today and it certainly looked impressive. I have yet to use one on a daily basis so maybe once Father Xmas has been and I get to use one on a daily basis I might well take a hammer to it!
Xperia X10 perhaps?

The winmo OS itself is so massive compare to newborns like Android and iOS, that's why it takes time to get around and even more time to get yourself situated in a comfortable position (even if it means countless tweakings). With every tweak and fix, you're suddenly opening up yourself to a whole different level of usability, way more expansive than the other aforementioned OSes. As a child, you start out with tricycles then graduate to a bicycles and at last, automobiles. Each one of those stages has their conveniences and it takes time to ease into them.
If you think it's so hard to handle the OS (or HTC for that matter), take a look at the themes and applications forum and see the countless of people in there happily using their phone through personal customization and tweakings. You can't tell me that all those additions are easily accessible with other OSes (it's possible, but arduous). What I'm trying to say is that, it's a challenge when face with obstacles, but with the help of XDA, the light at the end of the tunnel is just a few clicks away.
With that said, if you still think winmo is the root of all evil and is too complex for you to even maintain data connection (though that sounds more like a service provider problem than the phone itself), feel free to return it and get whatever phone you want.

i think in hindsight i do agree, winmo is a lot easier to manipulate than other OS's - and even though its not always ideal, you cannot deny how powerful it is with quite a wide compatibility list
i am sticking with it for now and shall see where it goes, especially since i here there is a new ROM due soon
You could wait for the HTC Bravo.
BUT
- it maybe won't have multitouch at all, or lagging multitouch like the Hero
- it will lack a bunch of features that you get with Windows Mobile
So what you should do is: Instead of just complaining about shortcomings of the HD2, think about whether other devices would really make it better, or maybe have even more shortcomings - then decide what to do.
I also sometimes get annoyed with the HD2, but then I think of all its advantages over other devices like Android ones ot the iPhone, and in the end I always come to the conclusion that, though the HD2 is not perfect, it definitely is the one that comes closest to perfect for me, so it's the right choice - for me, at least.
The title of this thread is maybe not the right thing to put lol
Nooone needs to convince you to stay mate, if you wanted peoples opinions then thats one thing but if you arent getting on with it and would rather have a different phone or different operating system then thats totally your call and I hope you find whatever combination makes you happy.
Theres plenty of threads stating what people hate and like about the phone and how to tweak the phone and make it perform better so have a read around and then you can decide what you want to do.
Good luck
Stay
I am humbled by the moderate and patient tone of the replies in this thread.
My first instinct is to flame an attitude of 'convince me to stay'.
As it has been eloquently put, winmo is a feature not a drawback.
Too many people seem to have been caught in the crossfire of Giz-shmodo & Enfadget anti-winmo diatribe.
The way I find solutions to any problem is to STAY.
On winmo there are always many ways to skin a cat.
It would be a pity to be on a platform where there is not the possibility to solve problems other than to complain, which rarely works.
I have been using Winmo for many years and the following are my personal opinions so please don't flame me. Truth be told, were it not for the talented developers, chefs, XDA & forum users (XDA & others), I would have moved on a long time ago.
The bigggest problem, imho,is that MS focussed on developing the Winmo OS, handing it over to the Handest maker for a few dollars and thereby "hoped" that the software & hardware would function as a unified solution.
The second issue has been that MS lagged in improving the OS and providing a viable marketing platform to developers. Their are tons of applications available for Winmo, however until recently their did not exist a single unified place to browse, purchase, review and simply install them. As a result Winmo was and to a great degree still is seeing by some as a business OS, one that was driven by how well (or not) it integrated with MS Outlook / Exchange, included office etc. MS has always traded on this perception
As a result of the above, we saw the rise of blackberrys & iphones. Both companies focussed on a single soultion where hardware and software were manufactured as a single unit. Both also focussed on specific solution points, BB on easy, secure access to email / apps and Apple with their product packaging & appstore /itunes integration.
So I ask myself why did I not take the plunge and move to either of these 2 platforms. Simple:
I like the choice I have with Winmo. I can flash Roms, try different radios, install apps from all over, play with the registry etc etc etc.
The HD2 is the first Winmo phone I have had that I can live with as is for the next 2 years. yes it has some issues, however none of them are a real deal breaker.
Until then, I wait patiently for cmonex /olipro and the rest of the team to complete SSPL and for our talented chefs and developers to give us the tools to enjoy our devices that little bit more! So if I were you I would be patient, look beyond the niggles and STAY.
Until Winmo 7 is released and then the fun really begins.

Want to get on with your life? get Android!

A parting shot here
A great forum, learned a lot, some very clever and helpful people here ( and some prima donnas)..but what I found out is while using a Windows device I was spending countless hours updating Roms, making stupid pointless cosmetic changes to my HD2 (usually resulting in making UI more ugly and messy - some theme designers here seem to have been on crack when creating themes - others very good), when in reality I was craving for a good selection of valuable everyday apps that are logical and simple to use.
Enter Android...Since buying a Motorola Milestone I am now using the phone only when I need - as opposed to constantly tampering, I have downloaded all apps I need, layout looks good off the shelf - a simple wallpaper change is enough, finger friendly, good hardware and away I go.
Looking back I don't understand why I got a WM device and really don't know why you guys are sticking to this dinosaur.
Over and out.
Isn't that fun?
Making slight changes to your phone WHEN you feel like it?
If that's what you're using the Android for, why not get an iPhone?
And btw, I like dinosaurs.
What is a phone supposed to be used for - to analyse the Hadron Collider?
Haha. that's funny.
But back on topic, you say what is a phone supposed to be used for? isn't it for communicating with others? via Phone calls, SMS, MMS, e-mail, social networking sites, forums on the internet, etc?
This phone does it all well, and excel in some areas like internet.
So, what.

android is definitely better for a day to day phone. ive only had the hd2 2 days and ive already switched back to my nexus. the hd2 is a beutiful device but wm 6.5 is definitely its worst attribute.
1. you spent a lot of time updating the phone
2. you wasted your own time doing cosmetic changes
therefore
3. the HD2 is a dinosaur.
not a very cogent argument now is it.
I dont play with my phones layout, theme nor small cosmetic changes. I only update the rom from Duttys, so once every 3 weeks or so that takes 20 minutes of my time to do so.
Shoo, and go play with your motorola.

I have to agree about wasting time with WM 6.5 and with WPS 7 coming out, WM 6.5 is a dinosaur; but It's about self control.
I have a small dog, she's healthy because I don't over feed her, while I'm overweight because I can't control what I eat, but I don't wish to be her in order to be healthy, instead I try to better my self control.
So no, I prefer not to eliminate my ability to choose by getting other phone like iPhone. This is my first custom ROM and I hope to exercise my self control

In terms of our Sense/WM devices, if you go by 'official releases' or forget official, lets talk 'big jumps', you'd be flashing maybe roughly three to four times in a year. Once a quarter! (1.4x, 1.6x, 2.1x, Sense 2.5.20x)
It is our -own- choice to jump at every incremental update (OH BOY 23545 IS OUT, GOTTA GET THAT!!!) and we reap the benefits AND suffer the consequences of using this non-final code.
There are plenty of people still running 1.66, their next update? Whenever 2.10 comes out! (Or whenever their carrier decides to screw them with an interim update - think I saw a 1.72GER floating around )
So you tweaked a lot of stuff on your UI and that made you give up on it.
Ok.
My HD2 does not need intensive cosmetic tweaking to the UI. Spooky!
Maybe you're just obsessive compulsive...just saying.
Not one freeze in one month of heavy usage (meaning it runs stuff I half bake...I mean compile and execute on it) and some initial tweaks with Cookie's mod and control panel made it look peachy (btw you folks rock).
As for the process of jumping from premisses to a logic conclusion, even Android can't fix that. So good luck using it. Just don't go declaring something to be an extinct life form when all you have to go on with is: "I tweak and flash a lot". That is more telling of how much you are unable to appreciate and use something then of the intrinsic value and quality of the object you judge.
I'm actually interested in going to WM from Android.
Android doesn't support the things I want to do. Mainly video/audio codec support for most files.
got my Desire on pre order. I love the big screen of the HD2 but ive come to the conclusion that im something, of an app fan. I dont want to move back to an iPhone and Android is something I have experience with.
For me Android offers MORE potential for customization, and by customization I don't mean making the home screen look a bit different but real CORE app functionality. I'm a big texter and on Android I recall a number of SMS apps that one can REPLACE the built-in messaging client with - Chomp, SMS Popup, Handcent...to name a few. These apps offer the facility to quick reply from within any app via a popup window, and also to initiate a text message whilst in, say, Google Maps...and they all have a different look to them.
The only app I can think of that has any similarity to this on Windows Mobile is made by Vito, is ugly as sin, and offers very little other than a clunky looking popup.
This is just one facet of a number of other things I have found Windows Mobile to be deficient in since moving back to it from Android. Just simple things like Twitter clients and IM applications - even from the SAME companies - look, feel and work ten times better on Android.
The fact that the HTC Desire will be receiving support for 720p DivX and video recording sells it to me. I'm positive the younger OS will take advantage of the Snapdragon processor a lot better than WinMo, considering how much more stable the Hero was than our HD2s, despite its sluggish processor.
I'm going to be sad to leave the Windows Mobile world to a degree - I will also be sad that I have no chance of getting more than £300 for my pristine unlocked HD2 despite paying £499 only a few months ago, but fortunately my contract with T-mobile expires on the 5th of April.
The second hand price drop is a lot more severe than I've seen for most other devices and perhaps tells just how much faith people have in the devices future.

Agree 100%. Oh, and I am one of the plenty on 1.66
I have been doing quite some tweaking on my HD2 since I got it just before XMas. Most of the times I did it just for the pleasure of playing around with the thing rather with a real usability or aesthetics objective.
When I bought the HD2 knowing that I could "get my hands dirty" was one of the (secondary) point in my decision making.
Most of us people here like to play around with our devices. The problem is if we get carried away (like with many other things in life).
And when one gets carried away - often one of the most effective solutions is quitting altogether. No shame in that (on the contrary - I believe it's a very responsible decision!!).
Those who do not get carried away, let's keep in mind that we *could* - so let us not criticize those who quit.

This is XDA DEVELOPERS FORUM, after all!!
: D
lol.
"I tweaked my phone and now it's ugly, so I got a different one"
Troll++
Well I have tried Android numerous times, and personally, I hate it. It's so ugly that it looks like some china-low budget crap. In the HD2 with it's amazing Sense, I get all that I need for everyday use in a way that I prefer - and the Sense UI is stunning beautiful.

A general discussion about an idea that makes perfect sense...

Now, I appreciate everything that these devs have had to offer. I've tried different Custom Roms (With Core Cell 3 being the most stable I've experienced, outside of the annoying Opera Mamory bug)...Android builds...and all that great efforts you guys Put forth.
I look at all these threads and Roms and see the same thing over and over...bugs...bugs....and more bugs...
The most stable Windows Rom I've truly experience is the stock one...lol...not being a smart a$$ at all. Everything just works. Take a registry editor to it and it's provided the most stable platform with Core Cell 3 a hair away from it.
Now, with Android, I see constant bug reports. I mean, people seem to have a great appreciation for the builds and love them, but it always follows up with a major bug...or even worse...lots of little bugs.
What I don't understand is why don't all you devs get together and build the "XDA" Custom Rom or "XDA" Android build that gets undiveded attention and all resources so to make it truly BUG free? Once that has been accomplished...then we can go ahead and try these test builds and play with them...
Now, I say this with a great deal of respect, having worked with developers before I know how fragile the ego's can be
It's also my experience with those same developers that taught me complete focus of resources surfaced the best result.
I mean, an effort like that is something I would pay...eeerrrrr....donate too.
Android seems to be the future for the HD2, at least I think so...some may have a different opinion...that's cool. But as much as I actually like WinMo 6.5...and WinMO 7 showing signs of being a demo at best on the HD2, Android has a future.
I think it would be a great idea for you guys to focus on one thing at a time until it's at a state you can consider it marketable...not that I'm saying that's what you should do...sell things and all.
I would even think it would be cool to take WinMo 6.5 and change it into something completely different and better than what Microsoft settled for...I always promote making Big Brother look silly with a superior view of their own product.
My point is...no matter what platform or approach...get together on it...I bet the result would be far more productive.
I fear though that this idea...no matter how much sense it makes...will not come to fruition...WHAT THE DEUCE!
Looking forward to your thoughts.
well i came up with this idea http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902534 and would need a thew devs to work on it,about having our own unoficiall Android Rom,Something wich we can say is our own HD2 rom not direct ports if you know were im coming from and pretty much bug free and stable and fast.i know a thew devs came together to create nand so why not do it to create a rom
Thew?

Hah, bug free... That's an interesting idea. The last bug free thing I saw was my Nokia 3210. Since then even my microwave ovens get bugs.
The devs do work together for the most part... different problems get solved by different devs, and they credit each other. I think its amazing what they've accomplished. You should be more than happy with how well we have a port working. I never thought it would get as good as it has, especially as quick as it has. Just look at the Raphael or blackstone... they've been working on ports for those devices for years and are nowhere close to where we are, and might never be.
The devs are doing what they can. This is their hobby... they're gonna work on what interests them. You can't expect them to all work on what you want them to... they would lose interest and we wouldn't have so much innovation. Plus a little competition can bring the best out of a person.

Well most of the bugs in Android are at the kernel level, and there is already a group of developers working on that same piece of software together.
You also have to keep in mind, as other users in this thread have already said, that no software will be without bugs.
I guess...I just know with absolute confidence this idea will work best. Nonetheless, I understand. Also, it's not what I want?...its about completing a task these forums have already put in motion...just at a more effective manor.
i want sense build base on desire hd or z
its will be lite enuf to run from RAM and boot fast
the Data.img will be backed up in the nand but will work from SD card for better performance
that's what i think is perfect to me
RAM gives boot time and less battery drain
data.img on nand and sd card is for better iops and for backuping ur info fast with CWM
u can remove anything u dont use cos it wont be in the RAM
all most important things like email / messages / people browser will run from RAM to get the speed-est performance
As has been stated, aren't most the bugs pretty common to all builds in one way or another therefore indicating that the problem is at the programming level rather than the rom developer level.
IMHO find one you're happy with and take the bugs with a pinch of salt - the HD2 is still one of the most exciting handsets about and to have the ability to experiment with all this thanks to the ROM guys and the tools developers on here is just blooming fantastic!
Stop moaning and appreciate what we have here!
Personally, I think this is a bad idea.
I'm very happy to have multiple developers all working on different projects and supplying us with different ROMs. For example, I hate HTC Sense and prefer stock Android, but lots of people disagree with that and think Sense builds are superior.
If all the devs worked on only 1 ROM then that's all we'd have. 1 ROM. My phone would be the same as yours, and yours would be the same as every other person on the forum. That would be pretty darn boring! If you ask me, more choice is better.
"If everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other."
I never said stop working on different flavors of Roms. Just focus on an XDA Rom. Once refined, let the flavors flow...right?
You know, I approach this topic from a respective and open discussion approach with an expressed curiosity at most and the best you can do is confuse it for moaning?
It's guys like you that start all the flaming, when you have people who are simply exchanging ideas.
There's always a few out of the bunch that can't resist being abrasive aka a$$holes while others are just chatting.
