Hi folks. I have a USB Mobile Internet dongle with an o2 Sim card. Its a pay as you go sim and I'm really happy with it, but sometimes I just need 5 minutes connectivity.
Can anyone tell me if I can use the Sim in my Wizard so I can do basic internet stuff without having to crack out the laptop?
If so, what are the settings I need?? I have tried, but I get a server error in Pocket IE.
Thanks.
I used a 3 sim from an usb dongle in my phone without any problems
about what apn then I would search the forum or google it
Ok,thanks for the reply. I just wasn't sure if it would work at all.
Does it work as a data sim? i.e. go to the web page and top up either £2, £7.50 or £15
Or is it topped up as per a normal sim with the higher data charges?
the 3sim I took from the usb dongle was a normal sim didn't try to make a normal call though
but worked on the internet
flat rate price so no usage price just a monthly fee
Excellent. I now have it working.
I discovered I was entering the allowance payment page address wrongly.
I put some money on it and BINGO lol
I drive for a living and now I can quickly update a travel page without trying to stop the laptop from whizzing all over the lorry.

Hello,
It's been about a year since I purchased my O2 XDA Exec from O2 and my contract is soon expiring. I am not a business customer, I simply want access to the internet to manage my website, stay in contact through email and using the internet for general purpose, such as reading news.
In advance, please forgive me as I am quite a newbie in the phone area when it comes to things like services and sim cards.
I am currently paying around £40/m for my O2 XDA Exec and Data Max (120mb). It seems now, that O2 have removed data tarrifs completely from non-business users. Previously only the bottom 3 were available, now they are all business only.
My main problem stems from the fact I don't use my exec for the internet often as I usually have some other access to the internet at home or at work or a dialup line. However, when I am away from home and work, I use the internet an awful lot (thus a tiny 5mb plan or so wouldn't be enough) and for things such as Logmein (eats up megabytes).
This leads me to wonder what my best option would be. Is there any general non-business options open to people with a lower monthly cost than £40/m but with more than a tiny bit of data (20mb+, ideally 75mb+).
Which leads into my second question - is there any way I can use any of these services on my XDA exec, or will I have to buy a new phone? From what I have read, I understand you can buy a different sim card and put it in the phone and use that service instead.
What looks the most perfect for me, is T-Mobile. T-Mobile seem to have very good internet data plans, and they seem to acknowledge that non-business customers actually do want access to the internet and not just a tiny amount of data. Their Web 'n' walk Plus (12) for £29 a month for unlimited access and allowing laptop access. They also seem to have a service where you pay £1 and then get internet access for the day. This would be even more perfect for me, where I need lots of internet in one go, but then no usage for other times.
My next question would be, do I stand any change of using either of these services with my XDA Exec, and if so, how could I go about doing it? I have done my best to search for details, but have found conflicting reports and a lack of details about how to go about doing these things, especially for a newbie like me lacking in knowledge in this area.
I would really appreciate any help anyone could provide,
Thanks in advance
Firstly, I assume that your Exec is unlocked and that you can use any sim in it. AFAIK, all O2 Execs came unlocked, but it might be worth trying a friend's sim in yours first. If not unlocked, I would guess there is an unlock tool somewhere on this forum - haven't looked myself as haven't needed to! Otherwise, there is no reason not to use your Exec on another network - mine is on t-mobile.
Secondly, and somebody may be able to offer advice on this, Three also offer decent unlimited data services but as far as I can see they don't offer sim-only pay monthly deals.
What you don't say is if you use your exec for voice calls at all and how much. On the (big) assumption that voice is not important to you, t-mobile offer two options:
1) pay monthly sim-only - £7.50 gives you 50 mins voice per month per month (15p per minute). You can then add the £7.50 web'n'walk option (unlimited data, but no modem, voip or streaming use). I have read elsewhere that it can be problematic getting this package from sales but I am using it myself so persevere! I assume you can also add the web'n'walk plus instead.
2) Pay as you go sim - 12p per minute plus 0.73p per KB, capped at £1 per day but the t&cs seem to say no modem use so may not be for you.
If you really don't want data approaching 1GB per month as offered by t-mobile, Vodafone's deals may be better - don't have much knowledge of them but they offer 15MB per day for £1 on PAYG (although it seems that it is £1 for the 0.5MB and then free to 15MB, so it may be more expensive than t-mobile - haven't done the maths), or 120MB for £7.50 per month if you're on a sim-only pay monthly contract. They offer 150 mins and 500 texts for £20 per month so this is a marginally better deal than t-mobile if you want to use the Exec for voice. Also, reading the t&cs, they don't seem to preclude modem use as with the basic web'n'walk. Someone may correct me on this.
I did (almost) exactly the same thing when switching from Orange - went onto one of T-Mobiles 'Relax' packages (combined calls and texts) plus web 'n' walk unlimited internet, and I only pay £27.50 a month now and tend to use the internet a lot. I also got a free Nokia 6233 as well, but put a payg sim in this instead and put the contract sim in my uni...
As far as configuration goes, once you join T-Mobile, you can register on their website, which allows you to access an interactive manual for your device - mine was initially set to the Nokia, but you can change it to the MDA Pro (same as the exec) and it then explains, very clearly, what you need to do to configure gprs/3g connections, etc.
One word of warning though, gsm internet access (which is set up to dial a number) is not included in web 'n' walk, so if you use activesync to sync outlook mails and a gprs/3g connection is not available, it can potentially dial up a gsm connection and stick lots of call charges on your account. This happened to me, and about £150 of extra charges were put on my bill - I managed to get them removed and now I don't have a gsm internet account set up on my uni so it doesn't happen again.
Hope this helps.
good info.
I ll do the same.
O2 is not that good for internet. but good for minutes
T mobile internet is cheap.
I moved to three not so long ago.
I'm not sure if the offer is still there but i'm currently paying:
£17.50 line rental
£10.00 X-Series
£27.50 a month total.
I chose the worst phone(dont use it (LG U300)) from their tarrif to give me 18 months half price line rental. Gives me:
300mins
1000txts
£5 downloads a month
50 video mins
25 MMS
X-Series Gold gives me:
Slingbox & Orb usage (80 hours a month (about 2 hrs a day))
5000 Skype minutes a month
Unlimited MSN Messenger
Unlimited Internet (1 gig before they start throttling)
Signed up for X-Series gold for 12 months (in shop) and they give you a free slingbox (worth about £140) not bad at all!!
Pretty damn good deal. I must say I love three, not had any issues at all.
You can also get x-series silver which is without the orb & sling stuff for £5 a month.
I doubt you'll get a better deal from another mobile provider. The slingbox is just sick, watch your sky tv on the move, i've not tried it yet as it will involve some additional networking but I can't wait!!
worth a look...
Thanks a lot for all the replies, some really useful information and I very much appreciate it. I apolpogise for the lateness of my reply but unfortunately I have been inundated with work which has put me back looking into this.
What seems to be the most perfect for me, is this plan from the T-Mobile site:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/mobile-internet/on-your-phone-and-laptop/
Web'n'walk Plus for £12.50/month on top of your voice plan
It says you can use it on your laptop and on your phone, and includes the data allowance (but no VOIP).
However, I'm still a little unclear - would it be possible to get a sim card (withouta phone) for this plan from T-Mobile as it doesn't seem possible from the site? If so, would I get the sim card, configure my Universal with the required settings and then be ready to go?
Thanks for your time,
Quboid.
You can get a sim only monthly plan from T-Mobile, but it only includes 50 minutes of calls and is £7.50 a month and there doesnt look to be any sort of scale of charges associated with it. It also doesn't see to be available bundled with a web n walk plan, so the only internet you get with it is max charge of £1 per day for using the internet.
I would pick a decent handset to get for free, to use as a spare or if you don't want to lug your Exec about with sometimes, and go with your initial web n walk plan.

Thanks for your reply,
Is it pretty much impossible then to be able to get a sim to use in m Exec without having to get another phone? It seems somewhat furstrating if I have a compatible phone and such to have to get another in order to be able to go with T-mobile? Is there any hope of getting web 'n' walk without having to do this?
Thanks a lot
Try phoning up their sales department. They'll be best suited to give you decent info, i'm sure they want a sale.

Hi all , just got a spv m3100 and am gonna upgrade to WM6 and unlock the SIM/CID , now then.....
In the UK which is the cheapest/best data provider on PAYG , anyone offer free browsing on evenings/weekends? Do all use HSPDA?
How do i go about setting up 3g or even where to buy a 3g sim?
Also WIFI is free if i connect to my own wireless router isnt it?
Sorry for being so completely thick , and i have googled around for data tariffs btw but cant really work out half the hidden charges etc
i dunno about cheapest/best data provider, but for sure noone offers free evenings.
3g service is a capability built into your phone, and a "3g" sim card is just a normal sim card. there really is no such thing.
Wifi IS most definitely free if you connect to your own router.
Thanks for the responce , I know Orange do free evenings....
"Get up to 1000 free texts to anyone every month
and free evening mobile Internet browsing"
http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/sim/payg_sim
Apparently the most you can spend is 1 pound a day (on most providers) , is this for 3G as well as / or only for GPRS. And are there any hidden charges?
How have you guys found browsing on your PPC's/PDA's etc?
Also which provider should i choose , who provides the best service in your opinion?
cheers
roy
as i understand it, 100p = 1 pound, right?
It shows that each area/region code has different going rate.
It seems like a reasonable deal, and orange i believe has 2g services (EDGE)
I think it says that the REGISTRATION fee is 1 pound, and the most you will end up spending for data is 2 pounds a day. This works like any prepaid card, you add money, you call people, money gets taken off the card.
It seems like a good deal, but orange has a history of sneaky language.
For example, their "Unlimited Data" actually mean "At 3 gb, we start watching you"

I think the 3 network is the best , 5 pound per month for 2 g data . it is very good at the moment , I use it for some months and the speed is ok so if you want to use the net on the go you should try to give it a go
buy a 3 simcard
install cap file on your spv m3100 which is all setting for internet
click start/setting/connection
click connection/manage existing connection
click Proxy setting/advanced
stick this network uses aproxy server to connect to the internet
click wap under server enter 192.168.71.35 under port 9201
click ok 5 times
topup 10 pound PAYG and then use your spv 3100 go to http://mobile.three.co.uk/pc/Live/pcreator/live/mwsun
go to my 3
from there you to buy internet add-on 5 pound p/m
you should only go to internet after bouth add-on because if you didnt they will charge very expensitive
Hello,
Can anyone tell me if on the exec when browsing sites you can hear the music on myspace profiles?
also what is the best way to get cheap internet as i will only be buying the exec for mobile internet so need something as cheap as poss! the phone is a bonus
thanks
anyone? please
I haven't tried this (yet) so can't comment on quality. 3 pay as you go has the option to buy a months unlimited internet for £5. I don't know if that means data or is specific to port 80 access only.
Ian
I think its possible and I know internet radio is possible with the tmcp player. even youtube.
Hey,
The Exec does not take 3 'contract' phone sim cards does it? So that kicks that £5 per month internet thing?
oh yes it does. ive unlocked mine and have a "3" sim inside it, i get unlimited internet for £5/mo on payg
to answer the other question, some ports are blocked but personally i have a vpn running across "3" mobile network to get access to all services, even voip
it also works as a modem, which your not supposed to be able to do, but it works
Very interesting Phycho.
At the risk of asking the "bleedin' obvious" is that with WM6?
I would be interested in a run-down on the settings for "3" as I am just in the process of purchase from them.
yes. just use the network config wizard set to 3, it just works.
When I purchased this I was told that the device would work with a voice and data sim. Just that you wanted to be careful with how much data you might use. I have a AT&T sim with a corporate voice plan and unlimited data for a pda phone. I am not currently in a 3G market, but it is coming online soon, and can't seem to get connected with that sim. I have put in a data only sim from AT&T that we have but it is our emergency backup sim/card for our pos computers in our stores. I don't really want to have to purchase another $60 a month account to have a seperate sim as well as my $40 a month data plan on my pda phone, which I am not willing to give that up either. I would bump up my pda plan to $60 a month with voice if it would work that way but I just don't want to pay a $100 a month to have two seperate devices.
Basically when I am in town I can use the sim out of our back up cellular router but when I go out of town or on vacation I have to leave it behind and would like the option of putting my sim in the Shift and using that as needed.
Any ideas.
One last note. The weather will update with my sim but that is it. No email and no vista connectivity. It does say that it is connected but when I fire up explorer it beeps a bunch of times and then the red X goes infront of the network connection and it fails to load anything.

Can you try to setup a proxy on the WM site?
Maybe that will help you
set up new connection
i had the same problem. htc support solved it. you need to set up a new connection in snapvue. vista only recognizes a MEdia Net connection. go to settings in snapvue, open connections, add new modem connection, select media net with default settings, save
when you open vista the sim will be working for a connection
mine is working fine in winmo and vista with isp.cingular.com not media net, ill be using no proxies over here
Everyone thank you for all your suggestions. I should be able to do it with these ideas. I should have thought of some of these myself. Thanks again
Update: It worked, thanks a lot. I have not had to do this since I bought my imate K-Jam at over two years ago. Thanks again one more time!!!!
I read about this somewhere, but i can't find the thread.
I know that normal T Mobile firmware requires you to connect to the web through T Mobile Web n Talk.
Well my firmware is now flash to 1.66 WWE and my phone is now unlocked.
I bought a O2 sim and a Vodaphone sim with 3GB and 1 GB prepaid data credit.
Whenever i open a browser app or go to setting> wireless controls > data connections i get this error message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
Cannot connect for unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacture's documentation and try again.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Hi
I have done the same to my phone and it works fine on O2.
I assume you did a hard reset after the debranding operation?
Once my phone came back to life after all the software changes, I went to Start/Settings/All Settings/Connections/Connection Setup. Tapped the operator button, selected O2 from the drop down list and the phone connected and got all the necessary settings for GPRS an HSPDA connections. You will need to setup a WiFi connection first (I think). It might have downloaded the settings via SMS.
However, if you want to set your phone up manually, try this site first, filesaveas.com/gprs.html
(as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet, so you will have to add the url to the beginning of the link).
it is full of great advice for UK mobile Phone Operators WAP/GPRS/HSDPA/Email settings.
Cheers

um...
I'm not sure if i did the hard reset or not.
I'm going to test it on another Sim, as there is a chance that i don't actualy have usable credit on these Sim's so i'm going to try on a 3 Sim which gets 150mb free with 10 pound top up and is definitely for use in 3G phones.
My sims might be for wireless modem only, not too sure.
If that fails then i'll start look into other options.
How much of a problem would not hard resetting be?
Hopefully i did and that's not the problem.
Good to hear others have had success with T-mobile unlocked.
What is the worse case scenario? Re flashing and hard resetting?
Thanks.
if you were still on your tmo sim when you flashed to 1.66, then you probably still have the tmo settings for mobile data set as default. A hard reset is a good idea, and let the phone pick up the settings from the sim automatically, or at least make sure all trace of tmo is gone.
look here
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connections - manage existing connections to see a list of currently configured mobile networks
I use both a 3 SIM and a t-mobile and the HD2 will pick up their use, configure the settings and store them both at the same time and all automatically.
You shouldn't have the problem that you are experiencing. And its nothing to do with setting a WiFi connection.
Who unlocked the phone for you?

I haven't seen a phone SIM with prepaid data credits. If your phone is set for the right operaror, my guess is that you can't use this data allowance through your phone. You might try the router feature or connect a laptop to use the Web via your phone. If you're in the UK you might try T-Mobile and see if they still offer the PAYG SIM I have. 'Unlimited' data and texts are included in the month after you top up with £10. If you top up in April, data and UK SMSs would be free in May. Top up in May and browse and text for free in June. The £10 top up remains for calls. The offers change but this one suits me.
I use my laptop to connect to the Internet via my HD2 router. T-Mobile say this is against their rules. If they can tell the difference between phone and laptop use, perhaps you can use your data this way and so my earlier comment. They haven't said anything to me yet so I doubt it. I think you'd need to install the router; it's been removed by most operators.

Like I said I have the same SIM as the OP and of course it works in the phone. Its just a SIM with credit on it and I also use it in a mobile broadband USB modem through a 3 WiFi router without any problem.
Some of the prepaid 3 payg boxed deals are preloaded with bundles of data access thats what the OP must have, but there shouldn't be any problem with them connecting in a phone.

Well the O2 and T-Mobile sims that i suspected were modem only i used did not work, but the 3 payg sim i am now using is working perfectly.
3 offer 150mb free with every 10 pound credit topup.
The sims i got were not payg for phone use but modem use i believe.
In anycase it works now.
Where might i find any payg sims with preloaded data for mobile phone use?
Thanks.

I have a T-mobile PAYG SIM in my HD2. When I top up with £10, I get 'unlimited' data and UK text messages in the following month. The definition of unlimited varies but I've used over 1Gb without T-mobile becoming upset. It's not pre-loaded data but amounts to the same thing. You might need to check that the offer is still valid.
