Well, this changes things. Right after it came out, Matt called the HTC Hero "tragically flawed." Why? Because the otherwise fantastic Sense UI was slooooow. HTC, presumably run by competent, rational human beings, has fixed this.
From the review in July:
The Hero is flawed, though, in ways that are truly depressing in light of its potential and how much it does get truly right: It's often sluggish, which absolutely destroys the user experience. It's a particularly unfortunate affliction as the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre emphasize speed, making the Hero feel that much slower.
This was all but a dealbreaker, this frustrating slowness. But! Paul at MoDaCo has a preview of HTC's forthcoming update, which was vaguely announced yesterday, without much mention of what it would actually do. Now we know: It's about speed. And as someone who's been using a Hero for a few weeks now, this video makes by fingers tingle, ever so slightly.
Best of all, this update, due in a few weeks, looks like it could be ready before the Hero even shows up on whatever US carrier it's destined for, by which I mean, Sprint. Now, excuse me while I go remove the asterisk from that "Best Android Phone Ever" title. [MoDaCo via Slashgear]

Can't wait. Loving my hero so far, except for the lagginess.
Rebooting helps but that's just a bit too "windows mobile" for my taste
I come from an iphone and i really like the openness.
I've got an unbranded urban brown so i should be able to get the update when they release it.
One thing i've noticed from the video is that the clock widget thingie is no longer animated but is now just a static picture.
It's very un-HTC like to actually release an update so quickly and to actually *gasp* fix things
But OTOH, they really set out to prove something with this phone, they can't afford to screw the pooch on this one.
HTC guys, we deffinately know you read these boards and all i can say is ... if this proves to be true and you keep releasing updates on a regular schedule ... i think you will win a lot of customers and dominate the android market.

and what about the keyboard messaging speed?? is it better now??

I have no problems running videos at 3 fps. Keyboard text input does get unbearably sluggish at times though.

The keyboard can get very slow in webpages I find.
I hope that this update also fixes the missing text messages issue, lots of angry peeps because I don't reply to them!

actually i meant 30 fps...LOL i made a mistake by typing 3 only...lol 3fps is supported by even the most basic video phone!

I really wanted to love the Hero (but the speed problem totally made me reconsider, having had a slow Diamond before) as the UI really is one of the best among the likes of the iPhone, and despite the fact that I am still using WinMo now I must admit that the iPhone UI is just a hell of a lot more out there. The Hero's UI is the first I see on any phone that really does match the iPhone's UI (if not exceed it).
If it actually speeds up so much with the update, it would be absolutely perfect, and I will buy one.

Agreed. I've just boxed/RMAd my Hero for return. I thoroughly enjoyed the time i spent with it but as it is now, its just not practical for me. Plus i dunno how HTC do their updates and if they truly fix anything useful or just random fixes no one cares about, which is why i wasn't willing to gamble.
If the update does improve things significantly then i'll come back or simply wait for the next iteration but in the meantime i'm returning to my trusty iPhone. Yes its UI is dated, yes it sucks at multitasking, yes the app store policy is draconian, yes battery life sucks. However the little things the iPhone does, it does well and is dependable for me.

I'm looking for a phone to buy in the next 2/3 months and if the hero gets as fast as we can see on the video, my choice is done. Otherwise I'll stick with my old phone waiting for a real Iphone competitor...

Speed the only problem?
I'd say that functional shortcomings are even worse. The speed-issue is mostly a feature of true multitasking. Don't expect good performance from a low-end CPU when it's trying to run all the fancy widget applications simultaneously. Optimisation is always appreciated though.
More important issues IMHO are:
Email not able to display messages with digital signatures. Never mind verification of the signature, but there's no good reason why the unencrypted message body can't be displayed. K9mail from the market handles it, as well as the mail-app in a stock android 1.5 dev.kit.
Email has no option to specify the path for IMAP folders. No folders other than the inbox can be read from servers which require the path to be specified.
The currently used 2.6.27.x kernel has serious issues with wi-fi (performance issues, temporary loss of connection). There are good reasons why the entire wi-fi stack was replaced shortly after (see kernel mailing-list) and we should hopefully soon see Android built with kernel 2.6.30 or later.
LEDs and trackball lights have stopped working on some units. It's been claimed that these problems are software related.
The music-player needs more consistent sorting of songs. Now it sorts songs alphabetically when browsing all tracks from an artist, while the default should be sort by album+disc_number+track_number. Similarly when you browse all albums the ordering of tracks within an album seems random. The natural order here would be by track-number.
Fade out-in between music tracks can be more smooth, as can the fade in/out of alarms and phone-calls.
Peep needs fixing so that it doesn't drain the battery when there's no twitter account configured. I don't know what it does, but it certainly can't be idle when it reduces the standby-time to 6-8 hours. Kill Peep, or give it a valid twitter user-name/password and the problem is gone.
The dialler and phone-book could do with some optimisation. This is the only place I've found where lagging actually causes a problem as it sometimes leads to calls being accidentally initiated.
These are just some of the problems I've found. I'm sure people with other priorities and who use the device differently have other issues.

I really would like that person to post a video showing the contacts app THEN we can know if performance issues have been really solved.

Hero lag can't be worse than what the Pre has in just about every program. Looking forward to playing with one in person so I can check it out for myself. Palm has done a terrible job of implementing a good idea.

Pre was very zippy/responsive when i played with it

Speaking of terrible jobs of implementing good ideas, how about the fact that despite creating a fancy new UI for Android, including an innovative widget idea, yet again HTC have given us an essentially useless music player. Why on earth didn't HTC learn from the Diamond's problems in order to implement a music player that did not skip during tracks. Unbelievable! I'm so furious about this. And before someone tells me that if I want a music player I should use a seperate player, if the phone cannot perform the most basic function of any music player, which is to play music uninterrupted, it should not be included at all; I am not an HTC tester.
I have a class 6 micro SD card coming soon, if this doesn't help, it's bye bye Hero and hello iphone. It may not multitask and have a bland UI and have a draconian app store (frankly, who cares!?), but what it can do, it does very well indeed.
As for the update, I like many cannot get too excited about this because I am with Orange and their update will no doubt follow in 2015.

My Hero never skips when playing music not that I do so that often. Its so much better than my Diamond was.

Well that may not be entirely true.

The Jones - listen more often and you will experience it. Unless of course, it's a problem only affecting certain handsets, in which case there are serious inconsistencies in HTC's manufacturing at work here, I doubt it though.

What audio formats you are using? With mp3 and wma (some are high bitrate) I use both wired and ad2p heastets about 4 hours a day and never experienced stuttering. I have a brown one from mobiles.co.uk with vodafone.
Also, while listening to music usually a few applications such as browser or news readers are being used as well.

Interesting sproxy, mine is also from Mobiles.co.uk on Orange and I get no skipping here either, listened to music loads on the phone over the last couple of days. Mine is also one of the ones with no lag, or screen gap I wonder they had a newer "fixed" batch or something?

Do you really like your Nexus One ?

to all of you who already bought a Nexus One, how do you like your phone ? I've only seen posts with questions, complaints (battery, no Exchange calendar sync, etc), but no one says "wow, this phone is absolutely incredible, I really love it !".
I switched from Nokia some months ago (I was a Nokia fanboy for many years, my last one was a N97) to a HTC Hero, and find this phone absolutely fantastic. My Nexus One should arrive next week, and I'm sure I'll love this phone even more.
What's your opinion ?

the phone, simply is awesome. Granted there are some things that are flawed, but this is hardly something unexpected when a new piece of tech is released. So far all the troubles are software and can and Im assuming will be fixed in future updates. The speed is unmatchable, even with a **** ton of programs running simultaneously. I loaded camera, dolphine, market, default browser, gmail, and that 3d tron light racer all at the same time and the phone acted as if there was nothing there, scrolling was unchanged, processing just as fast as ever. The only serious gripes that I have with the phone is the instability of its 3g signal, but do not fret, this is a software issue and will be patched soon in the future. Also that some of the apps in the market do not yet work with Nexus One, but this too will be updated soon enough. I believe I can speak for everyone on this Nexus one Thread when I say, Google is one of those companies that takes care of its consumers.
Do not believe all the negative press that has dumbfoundedly found its way ruining the image of this phone. There is no phone faster, and there is no phone that is androidier.

I dont like my N1, I love it, its so fast and beautiful. It takes great pictures, loads web pages really fast, especially xda, Im posting this from it. Battery life is fine for me. Ive never had any 3G issues, had 3G the whole time ive had the phone. This thing is definitely a beast I cant wait to see what future software upgrades will do.

It's badass.

It's a great phone. Very fast, very responsive, nice screen and lots of features. N1 torch comes in handy!
Definitely not for apple iphone followers. This is a true Geek phone.
Only complaint is Tmobile's 3G network issues, using EDGE for now.
I would like to mention that the Audio quality is very good with my headphones, no noise feed back.

While I did complain in my review, I do like the N1 a lot.

I love it. The OS handles multitasking very well. While a lot could be streamlined, I bought the phone in hopes of future improvement. I have my iPhone 3GS right here next to me. I'm not going back to it.
However, I wish I could find a 32 GB microSD card. All I can find are 16 GB ones.

Let me put it this way.... I have a Nokia N900 (which supports Flash and is a multi-tasking beast) and my wife uses an unlocked and jailbroken 3G iPhone, both on T-Mobile. I bought an N1 on Tuesday and had it Thursday.
After bringing it home my wife (who lives and dies by Apple products) said, let me just pop my sim in and take a look.
After using the N1 for the past two days she has officially declared she is selling her iPhone and keeping the N1 and if I want one I'd have to get another one. Well SHOOOOOOT....
What she likes about the N1 (as compared to an iPhone 3G running 3.12):
- Likes the way it feels
- Amazon Music Store
- Managing Playlists on the Device
- Using any song as a ringtone
- Customization
- Likes the trackball
- LOVES LOVES LOVES the keyboard and texting functionality
- Thinks the camera is quicker then the iPhone.
Her big complaint with the iPhone camera was how it had a slight delay between
pressing the shutter function and saving the photo. Where inevitably the subject would
move during that short 'processing' time and blur or make the photo fuzzy.
Her only dislike:
- Headphones. As we all know HTC has a tendency to pack in very stock headphones which have poor audio quality. She's hoping more third party manufactures will make headphones specifically for the N1. Otherwise she's in the market for a decent pair of bluetooth headphones.
There you go.
And with the promise of Flash integration for the N1 from Adobe coming in the short months she's a very happy camper.

Same here my iPhone will now just be used in my car for music and Sat Nav now(Got TomTom car kit/app)
All the 16GB are class 2 from what I've seen but I'm sure we will get bigger and faster ones soon!

I absolutely adore my Nexus One. All of my friends are iPhone users... went out last night and the Nexus was def the centre of attention. It's not quite as 'refined' as the iPhone but that's what I like about it. It's still super fast and the apps are getting better and better.

I'm thinking pair the N1 to the car, start last.fm and tell it to play stuff.. not had chance to try yet (too much snow to drive).
If it works well enough I'll sub to spotify and forget about storing music at all.

I use Spotify on my iPhone but the iPhone still has better Sat Nav apps than Android.
But I heard TomTom will be bring out an App for Android so once they hits I might sell my iPhone.

Never seen any in the UK. Play.com, Amazon etc don't sell class 6. Let us know how fast read/write is when you get it please

No Google Nav in UK. And when I tried Co-Pilot on my G1 it was outdated and TomTom had much better maps for my area

Nexus One is amazing. end of story. yes some people will have problems either due to defects or simply their own mistakes. **** happens with any phone.

Haha. When the n900 stands next to the N1, everyone laughs at it. Not because of anything wrong with it, just because... anything is laughable next to the Nexus One. The iPhone looks like a toy you get for your kid to pretend it has a cell phone. The Nexus One is not an iPhone killer. The iPhone and the N1 are in completely different categories... iPhone is a toy from a previous age. Nexus is a thing of awesome power and functionality, in a design that is, yes, more beautiful than the iPhone, by far. It can't be denied, this is just as slim (slimmer, actually) and sleek as the iPhone, but it actually has some style, versus the iPhone's simple "nothing" look of one giant button. The only thing that the N1 does not make obsolete is BlackBerry, and that's because it, too fits into its own category, an email machine. All other smartphones now look like antiques in comparison.

Long time WM user thinking of jumping to Android, looking at Milestone & Nexus...

As you can see from my sig, I've been using HTC WM devices for a long time. I really like my TP2, but I feel like there is better out there. Over the past couple months, I tried a G1 (loved android, but thought the phone was too outdated) and a Nokia N97. (awesome phone, horrible OS) I've also tried Android on my Fuze, and now on the Tilt 2.
I've also always had a hard keyboard, and can't see my self using a soft one. I've tried typing on my GF's iphone (great phone, awesome for her, but I hate em)and I do ok, but its nothing like a hard keyboard.
I am only really looking at the milestone because of the keyboard, but its getting some pretty lame reviews, I'm sure its not near as good as my TP2.
One of my huge gripes with these phones has always been lag, and slowdown/freezing. So I'm really leaning towards the Nexus. I'm just worried about having no keyboard. Also, it looks like the Nexus can be (or will soon be able to) flashed with custom ROMS. (which is why I love WM, HTC, and XDA)
So I'm on the fence about switching to Android. And I'm 80% nexus and 20% Milestone. Opinions? Has anyone here gone to Android from WM? Are you happy? Regrets? Will I miss my keyboard? Will I be cool with Android?

Hey, I recently switched from my fuze running energyrom 6.5 to a Nexus One and have NO regrets at all. The phone does everything my Fuze did and more, both faster, smoother, and sexier. It really is an amazing device. Good luck with your choice!

Thanx for the reply... one question. What about the keyboard? The keyboard on the Fuze was pretty good, and now your typing on a screen. Was it an easy transition?

the milestone HW keyboard sucks from what i've heard. definatly go with the nexus one.

just went to my local Best Buy to checkout a Droid, but they dont have any Verizons phones there. My nearest Verizon dealer is over 20 miles away, dunno if I wanna go that far just to play with a Droid...

I recently switched from my WM devices to a Nexus One and it's been very exciting. The phone does everything, easy transition, faster cpu, smoother, endless customizing, and the virtual KB is cool (once u get use to it).

I went from a sidekick to winmo(MDA - custom roms) for a couple of years to my G1 when that came out, I am a hard keyboard fanatic. So the MyTouch I got I was sure I would hate, I have 2 lines and while I still used my G1 as my main line I started to get used to the soft keyboard. Then came my decision of Droid vs Nexus or wait, I thought about waiting to see when/if they would release a version of the Nexus One with keyboard but then I decided to just buy it and worse case if they come out with one then I'll just sell it and buy that I guess. But i dont really have any complaints, the soft keyboard is actually pretty decent in landscape mode you really get used to it after a bit. In my opinion the minor concern of the keyboard is far outweighed by its overall performance. If they came out with a keyboard version yes id sell this to buy that, i love hard keyboards. However I would rather stay with this than have the droid. I think the droids pretty cool, 2 of my friends have it and I really like it but after using this beast I cant imagine using anything slower.

Well so far it seems the general consensus is I would get used to the soft keyboard, so I'm kinda over my fear of that. Now all thats left is my fear of leaving WM behind.
Also I forgot to mention, I'm on AT&T, so if I ditch my Tilt 2 for the Nexus, 3G is out the window. BUT, in my area I only ever usually see speeds around 400-600kbps, and Edge speeds of 200ish kbps. So I really wouldn't be losing all that much. I lived with it before when I had the G1, and my euro TP2. I have no idea when the evil empire (apple) will let att get any android phones, and I don't wanna wait.
Also, another thing. Email. I have an email addy with my ISP that I don't want to get rid of. Can you setup an email account (other than gmail) and have it check every couple of minutes? (like with WM)

I have a Fuze(and the hermes and kaiser previously) running the latest energyrom as well and my Nexus One will be here tomorrow. I'll report back after I play with it a bit. I can already tell ya that I'm bummed about the lack of BT voice dialing but I'm hoping they add it in future updates. I assume it will take abit to get used to the OSK, I've always told myself I need a physical keyboard so here goes nothing.
I also will be starting with the phone on ATT for a few days before I switch to tmobile. I'm hoping the 3g issue gets resolved on tmobile.

I am able set up my office email on my Magic so this should not be a problem.

i went from the dash (oldschool wm 2g phone) to the n1... wow what a difference, i feel like ive moved from the stone age straight into the iron age
i will admit i can type much faster on a physical keyboard but the softkeyboard is not bad, specially if you use landscape mode most of the time, i am ever improving... just takes getting used to

a lot of ppl here went from a 500 mhz windows phone to a 1gz android phone so of course it will be worlds apart.
try winmo on a snapdragon phone (TG01, HTC HD2) and things become so much better. Well depends what's available where you are - in the UK we get a lot of the good phones 1st simply because we have a compatible network.
I of course think I'm somebody and use two phones - a TG01 and a G1 (soon will be a N1 owner). As to which one becomes my regular phone - likely be the android phone - while the TG01 will be relegated to my media player. There is still nothng out there that can compare to the media quality of a snapdragon WinMo phone - Coreplayer players divx/xvid , streams and plays more audio formats.
Android still lacks any decent video playback and still stuck in the .mp4/3gp world. (Yes I can't be bothered to convert my vid files - why should I?)
Of course I am waiting the day when there will be the all in one phone and checking out the highlights of CES 2010 3 phones stuck out (google these):
the new unnamed Samsung running android with exact same specs as the Nexus (and with possible divx/xvid playback!)
the new Lenovo phone - lePhone running android with attchable modular keyboard CPU unknown...
The new LG phone - which I think was snapdragon - with 4.5 inch screen? More a MID or tablet but pretty sweet...
Ok there was news that winmo7 is coming end of march too but no demos..maybe at the MWC next month..

Yup... Make folder on the root drive as follows
media -> audio -> alarms
media -> audio -> notifications
media -> audio -> ringtones
If you put any mp3 on these folders, it will be alarms/notifications/ringtones respectively.
Also, they won't show up in the Music players if they're in these folders.

Had high hopes for N1 but disappointed

Long time lurker here and I have migrated from Winmo back in the day to Symbian and then to HTC's N1. Have also tried many other deivces along the way but thought this could have been it!
Unfortunately, I have been spoiled by the Nokia 5800. The sound quality from this thing is superb both for music playback and for speakerphone and I use it for both these purposes a lot. I had read about the N1 sound quality but thought the other bells and whistles would make me forget about it, sadly not.
The N1 I am sure is a great device but for now I am back to the Nokia. Perhaps with a little more time and patience I would learn to love the operating system of Android 2.1 but the hardware limitations (speaker and camera in the main) have led me to place my 2 day old Nexus One on the market.
For anyone interested, it's in the marketplace HERE for £449.99.
I will keep a close eye on Android and with MWC just around the corner, perhaps I will be tempted back when the hardware is available to match the O/S!

That's $707.25... I can buy a new on and have it sent overnight for ~$600.

IRT sound quality the speaker phone is utter crap but music is not bad if you have a decent set of headphones attached.

It sounds about right. My total came up about £441 after the VAT.
I agree re speaker sound but I'm saving up for QC 15 and I hope it will sound good enough not to buy an dedicated player.

Overall, my favorite is the N1 for customization, but there is one thing with the N1 that keeps pulling me back to my jailbroke iPhone and that is they keyboard. The iPhone keyboard is just so much easier to use. The only reason I can understand why is that it has multitouch. I often miss letters while keying on the N1 and best I can tell its when I hit the next letter before I lift my other thumb off the previous one. So I can type so much quicker on the iPhone over the N1. Why can't the keyboard be multitouch on the N1?

Why use speaker phone, and the external speaker to listen to music anyway? Get a decent set of headphones and a BT ear peace and be done. The former were never intended to be used in such a way for longer than when you have nothing better available and need to set the phone down. Its like expecting your netbook to game like your desktop, you set your self up to be disappointed.

I agree with this so much, I honestly do not know what you were expecting from a mere cellphone - even though some may have superb sound playback, I honestly never have "high expectations" for the quality of the speaker. Honestly, I never knew people so extensively used the speakerphone on a device enough to actually make them completely regret the phone.
I also thought that having a 5 megapixel camera (with flash) would make the phone an awesome device to take pictures with, it seems to me you simply wanted to complain, then sell the device - and this seemed to be the correct place to do it. I know that I'm wrong, but thats my 2 cents on the matter..

I use my N1 for music all the time, and think it sounds great. In the dock over bluetooth to my computer's speakers it sounds great. With my QC2's plugged in it sounds like I'm in da club.
The speakerphone is a speakerphone...I don't expect 5.1 out of it. What's with people???
I hate the standard OSK, so I installed the HTC-IME, and love it! Why do people quit so easily these days when we have SO many options?

So your only reason, let me rephrase, the ***ONLY*** reason you are returning it is because the speaker is not loud enough?

He's right in that the phone's speaker does leave something to be desired--Nokia phones generally have higher-equality speakers, what with them taking their "music phones" awfully seriously (I came to the N1 from the 5730 Xpressmusic: ****ty phone in every way but playback quality). It's a shame their devices aren't good for much else. Well, except durability. Those little buggers can withstand a lot of abuse.

I find it amazing that just because of the speaker he's prepared to loose all the other fantastic benefits of this amazing device... but still, different people, different priorities I guess. Myself I bought an £8 Veho360, very small and makes the music/podcasts sound like they're coming from a Hi Fi (Well, not quite... )
On the price, it is a bit cheeky he's trying to then make a profit. Mine cost £355 shipped and I may get a £60 VAT receipt soon. Having said that, there are peope on eBay asking £500 for it... I assume some idiots pay that.

Yeah, I wish my speaker was louder too (because I prefer to carry only one device to act as phone, tiny computer, media player and all) but it's far from a dealbreaker. Listening to music on it while out in public places is obnoxious, anyway, so I use the headphone.
Speaking of which, many people in countries other than the US/UK/Singapore/Hong Kong are quite willing to pay in the region of $600-800 for the phone. Makes me wish I'd ordered a few extra. Would've made a tidy profit.

I have to say this is way off the mark.
firstly the 5800 is rubbish. I had one and the earphone volume was ultra low until you pushed the case. Faulty connection in 90% of 5800's made. the OS is a nasty mess of s60v3 and touch. Sometimes you need single touch, sometimes you need double touch.
The contruction quality is poor, to be charitable.
You might be right about the sound quality, I gave my 5800 back within 2 days so never really tried it. but HTC devices normally have pretty good sound, perhaps a third party player with different codec might improve, or further roms might improve in the future.
On every other stat I wouldn't even bother to compare the 5800 to the N1

A bit unfair on the guy, I agree the speaker is silly bad, and why? Nokia can and do put some nice speakers in some phones, 5800 and N95's come to mind as brilliant, and some stinkers a bad as the N1, like the E72, N97, N97 mini.
Even the iPhone speaker from flipping 3 years ago sounds quite nice when you have no choice but to use it instead of headphones.

I really don't know where I should post this, but I really need some first hand advice about the HD2 from people who own and use the device.
I am not a newcomer to Windows mobile and have used several touch and non-touch handsets (the most recent being the XPeria x1), and I was never too overtly enthused by WinMo's multimedia capabilites. I currently use an iPhone 3GS and I want to change my phone.
My main requirements (except telephony) are:
1) Music Playback (I travel a lot and use my phone as a dedicated music player)
2) A really fluid and fast interface
3) Wi Fi
As you can see, the iphone sufficed for all the above functions, but the screen and sleek form factor on the HD2 is really tempting me.
How good is it as a music player (I've been using an iPhone so a comparison would be helpful). I use middle range in-ears (V-Moda Vibe).
How fluid is the interface?
How good is it as an all round device?
I would really appreciate it if anyone helps me out on my queries, as I don't intend to splurge a whole lot of cash on a disappointing device.

The HD2 is no iPod that's for sure, with SRS WowHD it's slightly better, but I still carry my iPod from time to time if I want to listen to music for more than an hour or so.
The interface is very nice with you have CoOkies Hometab installed, and with the LeoCpuSpeed v3 cab you can keep the processor at 1Ghz that will ensure it's super smooth all the time. (Otherwise the processor uses auto underclocking and drops the speed to 768Mhz.)
The Wi-Fi is excellent, it supports tethering and you can also use the HD2 as a wireless router to connect your other devices to a fast HSDPA (If you have HSDPA in your area ) network.

Well, depending on which cooked ROM you're gonna be using (stock ROMs, well, you know), how many 3rd party apps you're gonna install, and how exactly do you define "really fluid" and "fast".
And, first of all, what are there that you're not satisfied with your current i-Phone?

And I'm sick of salivating at the pics of the HD2 I find on the net, so I thought, what the hell, let's sell this off and buy an HD2. But its quite expensive here where I live (I live in India) so I thought let's ask the guys at XDA what they thought of the phone
I am really looking for an iPhone replacement in terms of music playback,quality, battery life and interface fluidity. The other baggage that comes with it (after all its WinMo), I could live with, and I enjoy tweaking and tinkering with phones (I did so with all phones I've owned except the iPhone). I just don't want to be let down on the road with a bad battery, freezing interface or choppy/lagging/bad quality music playback.

Well you're not gonna get a good battery life that's for sure! And as I said music playback isn't excellent because, well, it's not an iPod.

So, as I understand, I should stick with the iPhone and not dwelve into WinMo territory. I remember throwing away my Xperia in disgust once, when it hung trying to receive a call moments after I hung up from another call.
Too bad, the phone really looks ravishing, a real headturner.
Any other opinions are welcome.

I dont think you can really form a proper opinion solely based on reviews and other peoples opinions, if you get the HD2 there will be things that your like a lot and things that you dont..... as with anything........ you could always sell it and go back to your iphone.... and wait for the iphone4.......
I think the biggest annoyance you'd have coming from a iphone would be the battery life.... at least you can buy another one and swap over though....

It has a stupendous resale value, almost 90% of the buying value, and other phones don't enjoy this pedigree. And all phones here are unlocked, so there's no question of returning them to the carrier.
So, a HD2 is cheaper, and won't get as much cash back on resale, as an iPhone.
I am confused.

seriously go for the iphone 4, i saved up for a while to get an hd2, and while its more customizable then the iphone i had before, i have to admit i miss my iphone, the only thing holding me back from getting another iphone is selling my hd2, well that my 2 cents, take it or leave it haha

Dude, I've never owned an iPhone, just iPods and several HTC phones. HTC has had one bug for YEARS that absolutely drives me nuts, but nobody else seems to mind it...... If you're iTunes Library imports your tunes in AAC (m4a) format, HTC's Audiomanager will NOT be able to put the songs of an album into track order. Every time the audio manager scans your SD card it will put the songs in a different order, thus, if you want to listen to songs on an album in the order that the artist inteneded, you will have to create a playlist. So annoying. Also, no smart playlists in the audio manager, no updated playcounts in iTunes and large collections of music can take a while to scroll through.
Having said all that, I love my HD2 and the community here have done so much to make it (and other HTC devices) chuffing fab ; )
I think you need to weigh up how important the iTunes/iPhone music player experience is to you and just how much tinkering you want to do to make your device unique.
And besides, if you get an HD2 you can also use it to wake board on and fend off knife wielding muggers.... Don't ever drop it on a bare toe, side on. No really, don't, it's embarrassingly painful. You will cry.

So, bored people are easy target for gadget marketing propaganda.
Music playback, quality, battery life and interface fluidity are all the high words used by so-called reviewers that are really hard to quantify and measure. You just have to be realistic and reasonable.

Has there been any death reported in India just because one doesn't own an iPhone? So, it's all about mind control.

dont listen to the wanna be gadget pros here saying "stick with your iphone" or something. look at reviews balance facts its gonna be your phone not anyone elses

I had an Iphone which I used it for 3 years ,gave it to my wife and switched over to HD2 some 10 weeks ago.
The reason:In my advanced age,(cant tell you exactly how old) but can give you a hint,over 70!!.I was seriously worried of getting Alzheimers, so needed something customizable to occupy my time with,besides chess,so got the HD2.
so here is my oppinion if any value:
1-Music:after installing both the SRSWOWHD and the football_Audiobooster Equalizer Fix I can tell is as good as if not better than iphone,
2-watching video is a joy,after installing the Chainfire drivers and LeoCpuSpeed no video converting hassle any more with TCPMP.
3-screen size .no going back to 3.5 after using the 4.3.
4-very good camera.
5-I dont remember what was your other question but WIFI is great as it is the Opera 9.7.
IE is like shi## since the only reason to use it is for the purpose of Adobe Flash which in its turn doesnt work well due to Adobe not figuring out how to use its Flash on Touchscreens instead of a mouse cursor, and also for very heavy memory requierments.
All in all I like HD2 more than Iphone but I advice you to wait for the iphone 4 as recomended by some posters here,as you said ,because of its resale value,I was also going to add because of its simplicity too, but since the current Chess world champion is Anand from India will ommit that.
