HTCs response to Hero not compatible with Voda UK and Screen gap Issue - Hero, G2 Touch General

The great thing about the Hero is the cool widgets and the Facebook/contacts intergration. Not all of these widgets and features are compatable with Vodafone UK. Also many have commentend about the gap between the screen and the casing. I asked HTC about these two issuse. Here's the response:
New Response From [ Pete (Europe Support (Tech)) ]
I am afraid that the vodafone rep is wrong about not blocking ports. everyone using the Hero on vodafone UK is reporting the same issues with the widgets so they do indeed have other ports blocked. in fact i know for a fact that there are more than just that port blocked as they also block the common VPN ports, the WAP ports and certain others to prevent things like MSN...
as for the screen issue, i have heard of a couple of other people that have this, and it seems that the seal may not have fitted correctly. That would be best to send it back, or i am sure that we could fix it later as well.
best regards,
HTC Europe Support

What are we going do now about the Vodafone issue? I might call Vodafone and ask them.

I spoke to them, they don't recognise it as an issue. They'll probably say its not a supported handset so bog off. Give it a try though Mansn you never know. Tip for ya, when you call 191 select the option for blackberry. That'll get you through to the propper geeky techs with beards and all! Any other option and you'll end up talking to a Pat or Maureen who will struggle to understand what the heck you're on about.
If these things don't work then there is no point in even owning a Hero. Might as well by a Magic for half the price.

I just called 191. Where is the crackberry option?
1. Balance, Bills, PUK code
2. Lost stolen, making and receiving calls
3. Help with broadband and landlines
4. Less than 7 days, want to return it

I was told by the last guy i spoke to to select the blackbury option. You're right, there isn't an option. Anyway, just got through to a Maureen who has put me in the que for a tech dept.. 20 minute delay apparently.. Maureen did say "that phone is not supported, we can't help you"
I think the only way round it would be another VPN from Voda to bypass the blocks. O2 do that for getting round the data compression.
Will they provide an alternative APN so we can use the Hero to its full potential? might find out in 18 minutes........ TBC

Just spoke to the beards at Voda.
They have contridicted the HTC comments and say they do not block ports. Bottom line "this is not a supported handset. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"
I've discovered a half work around. The default APN is "internet" with username web password web.
Change this to APN wap.vodafone.co.uk (overwrite the word internet)
password wap, username wap.
Now the facebook and flickr pages load. All is good apart from the twitter app. That still doesn't work. I've found the internet speeds so much faster. On the internet APN I got half a meg, now on wap.vodafone.co.uk i'm now getting nearly 2 meg! Both APNs use the inclusive 500mb BTW.
so.. we're getting somewhere, just gotta sort twitter, there are other widgets on the market place which do work in the meantime.

that's nice of them.
Basically "you didn't buy it from us, bugger off!!"
i suppose that they may have changed things, but when i used to work for them, they definitely blocked some ports on the internet APN. 500 and 9201/9202 were definitely blocked at least, and port 80 was blocked on the business VPN access point!
And besides, if you can connect over Wifi but not on the Vodafone APNs then it just proves that they ARE blocking ports and they just haven't got the guts to admit it.
at least with T-Mobile they only block ports through their proxy...turn the proxy off and all is open!
Damn glad i chose to stay with t-mobile and not change to vodafone!
and yikes, everything even works on Three!! come on Vodafone, have the guts to admit it or just open the damn ports up!!

Why are any of these things not using standard HTTP over port 80?
I may be forced to move to Vodafone through work. What exactly is going to stop working?
As an aside, how is their 3g network compared to O2?

Hey. Having the same problem with Vodafone too, but seems as though it's just Twitter that's being the bugger with me, facebook & flickr have been fine so far.
I have tried various other Twitter widgets from market place but they either won't refresh tweets or I can't update my tweets. Is there one you would recommend that hopefully does both so I dont have to have 2 Twitter widgets running??
Thanks!
Ant!

Blimey. Done that and now I have the thousand or so Facebook friends in the phone too! *Blinks* It's going to make scrolling through a bit of a 'mare - especially as the 'scroll down by letter' thing on the right of the screen is so difficult to operate...
EDIT: Most of the new Facebook contacts aren't showing the photo. Do I need to do each of these individually, or is there a way of doing them all at once?

Ok, maybe I am being thick, but I got a HTC Hero today on a Vodafone pay monthly tariff with unlimited internet (ok 500Mb)
The internet wont work at all though.
Can anyone post the full list of their working connection details please?

I just tried the wap settings, and the internet is now loads faster! That's great! However ****ter still doesn't work, and facebook sort of works, but not quite ... very strange!

Thanks for the help. Internets working now!
SMS won't send though. I have spent ages looking for the settings page but can't find it.
Anyone know where the message centre number is so I can check its right for Vodafone?
Cheers

It seems as though Vodafone is doing something about the issue. A post on androidforums from mobiles.co.uk seems to indicate this:
Hi there,
Hero will be returning to Vodafone in the near future but we are unable to sell it currently due to some technical issues that came up - nothing serious, but we had to pull it from the site as a precaution.
Hope this helps,

In the old days the only way around port blocking was to use a VPN on a nonstandard port at home. Then VPN to that to use your home connection.

weather not updating on t-mobile usa

I know this has been discussed in other threads, but I wanted to start it here, since all other threads are bombered with "i want the htc touch weather applet"... and explanation on how to add cities.
This thread is to discuss any findings about why T-Mobile USA (and some UK) customers can never get updates via GPRS/Edge.
Almost a perfect device, but always these small annoying issues that SHOULD work, but never do.

I wanted to open a thread about this. This is a weird problem. One thing we know is not about the ports. This is really weird but my weather has updated twice over GPRS. I never noticed when it does it. Any proffesional help is appreciated.
I think this thread needs to go somewhere else because it is something general.
I am also seeing the same issues with T-Mobile USA. I am able to load Cities when I am connected to a PC or via Wifi, but not over Edge.
Weird
I was out on vacation the whole week and the weirdest thing happened. It updated my forecast. Just once, and didn't do it since. I wonder if it's tower/location specific. And yes, I have update when roaming enabled.
I am having the same exact problem, it updates when I active snyc, but not over GPRS- and I am on Tmobile also.
Does anyone know if there's a fix for this yet? It would make this app so much better being able to receive weather updates on the go via gprs/edge. I am having the same issue on tmobile, only able to update weather via active sync or wifi.

not yet. someone please contact the pda department and ask them to investigate further, although I think they wont do anything since the htc home plug is not meant for use with tmobile usa.
I just called T-Mobile's PDA support. They ran some diagnostics and told me that everything is fine on their end.
They said that if we can browse the web then we must be able to update the weather plugin.
One thing I did notice is that if I open the following link from my PDA it gets all the information:
http://htc.accuweather.com/widget/htc/forecast-data_v3.asp?ac=TR2cra9U&locCode=NAM|US|NY|NEW%20YORK
This link is what the weather plugin uses.
My touch is from the UK and in Canada the phone always shows roaming. As such what I have found is that I need to have BOTH "auto download" AND "roaming downloads" enabled to causes the plugin to "automatically" refresh the data.
The refresh does not happen as you would think howerver ( ie, in the background ) but rather when you switch to the weather display. If the last download was older than a preset age, it will download the latest weather conditions.
With roaming downloads or auto download disabled I have to force a download (ie refresh weather data) by manually clicking on the elapse time displayed next to the city name.
Where do I configure HTC Weather to use a proxy?
This problem reminds me of the days when everyone besides T-Mo users could access Google results pages. I think the consensus was that there was some incompatibility with MTU settings. It could be that this is the case here too.
Just found a fix here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319187
Step 1 worked for me...! Weather now updating via GPRS/EDGE
EDIT: I just unistalled the HTC Home cab and only copied across the HTC Home dll and it works as well. No need to run the host software.
Are you really using T-Mobile's proxy connection for this?

Nope, blackberry plan. Shouldn't technically matter though, if you're using the proxy you could point to the guys server via pocket hosts.
Cheers,
Robbie.
I'm still not able to get this to work. I think there are 2 things going on here for those which require T-Mo's proxy. First, is the T-Mo network problem in general that you seem to have been able to get around, and secondly, forcing the app to use T-Mobile's proxy, b/c all traffic must use that to use the wap APN.
Which servers are you using to get this to work over the internet APN?

Telus and MMS... It can be done!!... sorta

well, as the title implies, I have managed to get some of the mms features working on a telus titan phone
NOTE: as of yet I haven't been able to receive picture messages, but I can send them.
here's how I did it:
1. download then install the attached cab
2. under options -> advanced, then click the manual button and enter the following settings:
MMS Gateway: http://216.198.139.113
MMS URL: http://mmsfeplb01.int.eng.telusmobility.com:8088/mms
select which ever network profile you use for internet
and VOILA!!! half of the problem is solved... now if only someone could figure out how to receive them we'd be set, but I suspect that telus employs some means of the message being redireccted to their horrible online app to view the photos... which at present time, isn't displaying photos and they expire without me seeing them... good old telus, giving users the cutting edge while cutting out user support and features.
P.S. not too bad for my second post on these forums eh?

Well as you said it does work for sending, the receiving portion however, I don't believe you will be able to do it since TELUS' MMSC server is programmed not to forward MMS' to phones that have a specific user profile such as the P4000, instead is supposed to send you a net alert and have the pictures forwarded to telusmobility.com/snap.
Unless you somehow get someon to modify your user profile in the MMSC provisioning, there should be no carrier settings or registry tweaks that could help you out, unlike other carriers.
However, why don't you just log into telusmobility.com/snap, go to preferences and set it to forward a copy to your e-mail address. I assume you use e-mail on your p4000 and this will achieve relatively the same thing...
While we are at it, although it is much more convenient to naturaly MMS someone with ther telephone number, you could just e-mail them a picture to their phone, thus using your data plan and not having to pay 25 cents per picture message...
mms email address for telus phones: [email protected]
this should send it straight to a regular phone's wap browser and you just need to get the corresponding email address for Rogers, Bell and Fido

I've recently discovered that the e-mail forwarding function only works when receiving MMS sent from a Telus phone. MMS sent from other networks cannot be decrypted correctly so they're not forwarded to the specified email address.
The "save to album" also doesn't do anything. I've checked my photo album at https://photoalbum.telusmobility.com/index.asp . It looks like the site is still under construction or maybe it's just plain crappy. Nothing was saved there from my photo messages.
All and all, I'm very disappointed in Telus in handling (blocking) MMS. I'm searching for a working SMS2Email (or MMS2Email) services now. This way the person sending you the MMS can send it to your email instead. If anyone knows one that works in Canada, Please let me know. I really need to receive MMS somehow, and not on the crappy Telus Snap site (seriously, are they kidding?!?!?!).
Sorry to bump an old thread
This worked great for sending, but has anybody figured out a way to recieve yet?

Because Snap doesn't work right. Never has. When the wife and I first got the HTC S720, a Telus tech tried to get her going on Snap... even pics HE sent to it never showed up. With mine, maybe 30% of pictures sent to me ever arrive at Snap, let alone get forwarded on.
Furthermore, viewing in Snap itself has always been an exercise in futility. The password is about 2,000 characters long; the only way to effectively enter it is cut-and-paste. The only way to get it is to have the server email it to you, and the last time I did that (after I flashed my phone and lost the password), the password *never* arrived. I requested it four times, and never got a response.
And IF you do get a long, the pictures you get there are tiny. My wife ended up returning the S720 and getting a KRZR, so she could do MMS properly... she sent me 1.3MP pictures that only ever showed up as QVGA on the Snap site.

I've tried this with Rogers and Fido phones... the recipient gets a text message from my phone's email address, containing a string with the picture's filename, but not the actual picture.
Frankly, Telus's implentation of this is uttery broken and always has been. I've heard a dozen different "explanations" of why MMS won't work on their phones, and every one of them rings as bull$#!t. The most common one for them to give is simply that "no PDA-type phones support it", which I shoot down immediately with the fact that my Rogers Treo does it just fine.
When my wife's contract is up in another 16 months or so, I know she's planning to jump to Rogers so she can get a Blackberry and still do her picture messaging. Telus will lose a 20-year customer if they don't fix this issue; they will have NO chance of keeping her if they don't get MMS working. My contract will be up a year after that, and I won't be far behind her.
Hate to bother, but where is this "options" to put in the information. How do you get to it from the today screen?
Okay, trying this... but I get a "Not enough memory to complete this operation" message when I try to send even the smallest picture. I'm showing 51MB free RAM and 8.8MB free device storage memory...

Look for a new "SMS" icon in your Programs... launch that, click Menu on the right softkey, then Options... go to Advanced tab.
There must be more info required there... maybe the OP could share his settings for Message Center and Email Center numbers?
HOLY CRAP, IT WORKS!!!!
Well, partly... like the OP, I can send, but not receive (yet). The Palm app doesn't want to run on my Omnia (I get the "out of memory" error), but an older Arcsoft install (PPCGeeksSprintMMS) does.
I followed the time-honored hack for that one to enable the server editing (HKLM\Software\Arcsoft\ArcSoft MMS UA\Config\UI\EnableServerEdit -> change 0 to 1), then plugged the OP's server settings into the config:
MMS -> Menu -> MMS Configuration -> Servers -> tap the server name to edit -> enter full Gateway and Server Address entries listed above, Connect via: The Internet, WAP: WAP 2.0 (Port will change to 80).
Now, Arcsoft, at least this version of it, is pretty clunky and doesn't integrate quite as nicely as the Palm app - the Palm one actually re-retrieved the last couple weeks' worth of incoming SMS messages as well(!!). This one keeps a separate inbox that so far is extraneous.
Update: okay, it worked... like, TWICE. I tried replacing the clunky ancient version of Arcsoft with a newer version and I haven't been able to get it to go since. I've even done a hard-reset and reinstalled it all clean... went through a bout of not being able to remove the WM6_threaded app as well.
If the OP is still reading this... could you maybe post your related registry keys? Thinking there must be some other string that I need, something that's either incorrect or missing... *sigh*
So near, yet so far away...

It's obviously not an isolated incident then, I'm gonna give HTC a call and ask them about it.
Well I have called HTC and they said they would pass the information on to their technical team.
Where did you get your HD's? I've managed to log in on an Orange one, no trouble. Though it did say "You must have a Javascript enabled browser"...
I have a SIM free version, which ROM does the Orange one have, I assume they modified it?
Nope, vannilla rom.
ROM version: 1.14.405.3 (22273) WWE
ROMdate: 10/24/08
Opera version 9.5
Build 2682
Yer mine is the same... weird!!!
I'll wait and see what HTC have to say... Said I would receive a response within 48 hours.
SOLVED!!!
Solved this finally.
It's the proxy setting that T-Mobile (UK) uses, which also screwed up the email retrieval on the Touch HD.
With the proxy setting off there is no problem logging into Facebook an other sites which apparently have problems (according to the Opera forum where I found the solution).
But without the proxy settings you are actualy paying for the Data connectino, no? Watch out! Cause this is how is works in France for example..

This is the case with O2 PAYG as well, only web works, no POP3 or IMAP. I don't understand either of those but VOIP makes sense as they don't make as much money off those calls!

Can you tell me how you do that? disable proxy setting from opera:config -> proxy, or Setting->Connections->t-mobile settings?
Many thanks.
Solved login crash problems
Just added the proxy setting for wap under the t-mobile internet settings, and now i can login to facebook/hotmail without crashing the opera.

o2 mobile internet problem - help needed

I bought a sim-free htc touch hd a few weeks ago, bought an o2 pay&go sim, added the unlimited web blot-on, and thought everything would be just fine. But I was wrong.
It worked fine on the small number of occasions I used it before yesterday.
Since I added the web bolt-on, the automatic connection settings no longer work and I get the following message every time I try to set up the data connection:
Dialed:
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer's documentation and try again.

Other than trying the automatic connection setup feature a few times, I've also tried manual settings. Currently my settings are as follows:
Modem selected: Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G)
Access point name: mobile.o2.co.uk
User name: O2web
Password: some 16 digit long network automatic password
Domain: no value entered
Advanced settings:
TCP/IP: Use server-assigned IP address
Servers: Use server-assigned addresses

I've tried using a different username and password, same the ones listed on most setup guides.
I've tried entering a manual DNS, and Alt DNS server address under advanced settings.
I've tried setting up the connection from scratch.
And I've tried doing a soft reset followed by restoring it to factory settings.
Currently I am using ROM version 1.14.4005.3, and have nothing else installed on the device. I do not currently have access to anything other than a mac, so cannot use any windows-related troubleshooting devices.
Absolutely anything you could suggest would be great. Rang o2, but they were unhelpful. Thanks chaps.

Those are the O2 contract settings. PAYG settings are different and one will not work with the others' settings. You'll have to scoure the O2 website to find the manual settings for PAYG (or PAG as O2 calls it).
A word of warning, however, after just coming off P&G and onto contract, and thus knowing the limitations of both, your mobile web with P&G will be severely crippled.
Unless O2 have changed their settings on the server side, the only web program that will work will be Opera. Email client and youtube won't work as P&G is limited to port 8080 (HTML) only...
This is something that really annoyed me when I was with P&G because I couldn't use my mobile's email client because it just could not connect.
sorry, rant/warning over! Summary: you need P&G specific settings, you can find them (eventually) on the O2 website - keep trying makes and models until you find one that gives you the manual settings (I can't give more help than this as I had to do the exact same thing myself!). HTC auto-connect wizard only has contract settings in it. Also be warned that potentially only Opera will work once you get the settings!

Thank you so much. I may love you. In a non-gay way. Anywho, I've found out how to do it. It's extremely simple now that you've pointed me toward the problem.
Go to Settings > Connections > Manage existing connections
Then under the 'Modem' tab, edit your connection.
All you have to do is change the access point name from 'mobileweb.o2.co.uk' to 'payango.o2.co.uk'.
Very simple.
And thanks for the warning about the limitations. I might take that up with them, since it is not mentioned when purchasing the web upgrade or sim. I'll test it out first though.

It's a general thing with PAYG really, telcos want you to have contracts - make more money from you that way! all PAYG SIMs go through proxies for mobile web connections, and almost all the PAYG proxies are limited to 8080 only.
Then again, it sounds like you didn't use the proxy settings so we'll see what happens w.r.t non html usage!
When you get a chance, could you please have a play with trying to use Gmail on IMAP and/or the YouTube and/or weather panel and report back whether it works or gets timed out? I'd really like to see how you get on!
As I already have many phone contracts in the family (that I'm paying for ), I got one of those o2 simplicity 30 day rolling contract things, the cheapest one for £10, then added £7.50 web bolt on, that lets you do whatever you like (you tube, mail etc all works fine), I thinks its also 150mins and 300txts.
Tmob do one as well that I think £20 for more mins, Unlimited txts and free web (special offer at the moment). It is a better deal than the o2 for only £2.50 more, but I have better o2 reception where I am, and also they use the Edge network.

OK, I've played about with these a bit, and they seem to be working fine. Weather works perfectly, as does my Gmail account on IMAP.
The youtube application is extremely slow, but I'm assuming that is more general, than a specific PAYG problem.

I've got their 'Your Country' SIM pack, which is purely top-up, but they deduct the 7.50 form my credit each month. It's great for me, since you get free minutes for calls to overseas whenever you top-up - damn useful for an Irishman.
Can't afford 20 pound every single month unfortunately. Student life (ignoring the fact that I managed to get a HD).
Thanks again chaps.

Any way to spoof/change IMEI ?? Sidekick plan no longer works

Well it seems tmobile finally (as of 24hrs ago) blocked the sidekick plan from being used on different phones like the G1 and the iPhone.. on the iPhone forums theyre talking about something that can make it so the IMEI shows as another so I wanted to know if anything like that would be possible on my phone? I still have a sidekick and data works fine on it with my sim but that phone is a POS and more tightly closed than any other phone on this planet. But if I need its IMEI then i have it and please dont tell me to go and pay over 100% more for a G1 plan.. that will be absolute last resort.. BTW the phone still shows as its on a 3G network but everything times out that has to do with data. My Gfs iphone thats on the same plan does the same exact thing but her email works perfectly, I researched and it seems all iphones with the sidekick plan are able to access email but nothing else, i cant access anything.. I really dont want to give up my $15/month unlimited text and data plan
No one else using a sidekick plan? It seems whats actually going on is that tmobile block the hiptop.t-mobile.com apn from using the 8080 port (http), everything works fine for sidekicks because they run on theyre own servers and dont need this. Anyone know a way around this? My email (not gmail) works because it does not use that port to check it Im guessing.. can anyone help me figure a way around this :{
AFAIK, IMEI changing is illegal so I don't thinkl you'll get much help here.

It is in some places changing the IMEI is illegal, but there are guides on unlocking phones by switching the IMEI in the sections for other phones on XDA.
Well it seams that the IMEI change wont do anything so now what i need is a work around to the http port is there a way i can access anything http without using the 8080 port?

Remove the port from the APN?
LOL doesnt work it needs that port to browse the internet im guessing? i dont know but my hotmail email works fine im guessng because its another port and on iphones same thing along with some apps that use special ports but it seems that the 8080 port which is tmobiles http one is blocked?
Tmo just cut me off too. ... just when I was getting used to the low price. But I do think its just port restrictions on server side. I was thinking tunneling or a custom rom to bypass would be a possible solution. But hey deep down I knew that it would end sooner or later. It was almost too good to be true

People with iphone are getting through with just setting up a vpn although their connection is slow pob not to slow since they only had edge .. i was used to that 3g speed.. How would a custom rom be able to work around it?
OMG thank you!!!
I sound crazy but I just was searching the forums for this and made a post. My sidekick prepaid sim no longer works and I was left scratching my head. Any solutions?
Please please hit me up at [email protected] or post back...
ok i hope i didnt jynx it for the people who figured out this solution. for all yall who have non g1 data plans one way to get atleast internet browsing access would be to use Opera browser. its available in market and is installable if you have a rooted fone and have wifi access to dl it. google sync or other apps wont work but atleast you could surf the web. proving that a g1 rom mod to use socket connections for data via non-g1 plans would work. hopefully our developers could think of something. LETS GO COOKS LETS GO! this your chance to stick it to the man and corperate america!
I can confirm Opera mini works. How bout the VPN stuff?

I can confirm the VPN option works.
http://www.hotspotshield.com/clientless/iphone/
Thats the VPN i used. The only downside is you need cyanogens 3.9.7 rom and when your using browser some weird text is overlayd over the whole page looks the the page coding r something... But i only really use aim on edge so im good!
Edit:
Also Use Steel as your browser. It will get rid of the text. Make sure u use Iphone for the user agent!
Speeds are what you would expect out of edge.

Yea i had seen that one before... so i changed my plan to the shadows i tested it before on another sim and put the sim in my phone worked perfect.. off course when i cancelled my grandfathered sidekick plan and put the shadow on my sim... it no longer works at all ...keep telling me i need a subscription an the vpn wont work either
Thats unfortunate about the shadow plan. Guess what we need to do is appeal to devs to make a modded rom to help us.
An Hotspot shield looks like its just for the iphone. I have a g1 so how do I try the VPN stuff out?

If you flash cyanogens 3.9.7 rom it has vpn integration so you can set it up from there. I can confirm it works as i am using it now!
Yea I'm sorry but idk nothing about VPN's. I been had 3.9.7 so I'm in luck but can you point me to a tutorial as least?

(NOBODY POST THIS ON T-MOBILE FORUMS WE DONT WANT THIS FIX TO GET..."FIXED!")
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(This is only a temp fix im not sure how long it will work!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Make sure u have the hiptop.t-mobile.com apn set and the edge icon is visable. You probally have to select the "only use 2g networks" option. Im not sure i dont have 3g in my area but i do have that option selected.)
1. Push menu on the phone
2. Then settings
3. Then wireless Controls
4. Then VPN settings
5. Push Add VPN
6. Select Add L2TP VPN
7. Enter the following info
VPN name: HotspotShield
Set VPN server: 64.55.144.10
8. Push Menu
9. Push Save
10. Then click on HotspotShield
Username: ipykhv
Password: ipykhv
11. Push Connect
It should say connected and you will get a ongoing notification with a time thats counting.
If you get that data should work fully.
The only problem is if you use the regular browser you will get weird codes overlaid over any webpage you load.
So you can download "steel" from the market and go to steels settings and for the user agent set it to iPhone, the codes should disappear!
I can confirm that the VPN method works. Just PLEASE dont post this on tmobile sites and similar. Lets keep this trick going!!!
do maps and all that work then with the vpn set like that? how bout apps like where or sherpa that use data?
