Video Playback - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hello
Has anyone been able to get decent video playback on the Hero?
I've tried several encoders, generating files which play fine on a PC, but are jerky on the Hero. I've also downloaded a couple of sample iphone compatible h264s off the web, and they show the same problem (e.g. http://www.mediafire.com/file/0xczlxcc2mt/sample4pspandiphone.mp4)
My SD card is a class 6, so I wouldn't have expected it to be the card. So, is the problem the phone's lack of horsepower? Or is the video player not very efficient?
Anyone come across some magic h264 encode settings that result in video that works well on the Hero?
Thanks,
Lee
[EDIT] Just to add, I've tried closing down all extraneous apps, so the only things running are Album, Touch Input, and the video player itself.[/EDIT]

If you look at the demo video on the sd card you'll see it plays flawlesly on the inbuilt player. Dunno what bitrate/settings HTC used for that video, but its spot on.

If you have an advanced encoder that allows you to change every minute setting. Run vlc video player on your pc and open up the HTC demo vid. Then select codec info..
Or, if not iv found "encodehd" works just as well. Latest version has a g1 setting which is the same screen so works well, even full movies
Annyone found a video player with a better interface? The HTC one has no filenames so is impossible to tell what's what!

Handbrake with the iPod Touch profile works flawlessly for me.

What version of handbrake?
What size video are you creating?
What type of SD card do you have?
Would you be able to upload a sample that you have verified working on your Hero?

Same here, I just tweaked a few options and the video looks gorgeous and smooth.
Some videos I made:
· http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu3_k1p5Jjc&fmt=22
They include comments with info about encoding and formats used. I had some apps in memory, like Google Mail, Netcounter, Power Manager, etc. and still run flawlessly.

Pretty much the same video spec as I'm using, although my are UK tv source so 25 fps.
Are you using the standard 2gb card?

Yeap, at least until I get a 8Gb MicroSD.

This isn't a memory card problem
OK, I can say for definite that this isn't a memory card problem.
Not only can I read and write files to the card many times quicker than is needed for playback, but I also copied the files to the internal phone memory and played from there.
I also closed down all of the Sense UI and ran it from Home with the video player being the only application running, well nearly anyway.
And yet I am still getting stuttering video. I have tried multiple sources, resolutions, bitrates etc. It is very strange that there is still stuttering on very low bitrate clips.
I have also tried it 3 different video players, HTC, Video Player & Meridian and encoded the files using Handbrake (lots of different settings) and EncodeHD.
Update: It would seem that Beebplayer and youtube have the same problem. They both have the same loading icon which suggests that all the applications use the same routines for playback. It looks like its a software or driver problem.

It would be helpful if someone who has it working properly could post the same information to see if there is a difference in software builds.
Thanks
I'm sorry, but there is something just not quite right here. I'm on a UK T-Mobile G2 and would be interested to know if anybody else with the same has got it to work smoothly.
I'm wondering whether there are slightly different builds that are causing problems.

robw1978, glad I'm not the only one! Exactly the same symptoms here, stuttering every now and again - it does seem to be associated with fast-motion. We could do with someone from HTC looking at this thread.
If you try the sample video at the top of this thread, you'll see if on the fast motion bits. If we could use that video as a benchmark so we're all looking at the same thing. Pepole who aren't seeing this problem, please try the video above.
Where are you getting that info from?
Here are my details from Menu->About Phone: (I'm on Orange)

hmm. well I don't get anywhere at all. I used handbrake with the iphone/itouch profile - it produces a 48MB file which when played on the hero crashes the player.

Actually, it would be useful if people could post the specs as above, and stating whether or not they experience the juddery video issue, using the file at the top of this thread as a reference. Much appreciated.

success. Used another converter - videora and it worked great. great quality and the hero plays it smooth as silk.

Used that many many years ago for my original ipod video, didnt know was still around!
What you playing the videos with on your phone? I find it really annoying how "htc albums" has no way to show the actual filename.. making music video or even film playback a painful experience - unless you sort each film into its own folder...

I've found Meridian to be pretty good. It does use the same media engine as "Albums" though so I still experience the video judder as described here.

YouTube video - what's the best solution?

When I go to www.youtube.com in Pocket IE, it automatically re-directs to "m.youtube.com". So far so good - everything comes up including the thumbnails. Click on any thumb and you get the expected screen including "Watch Video". BUT ... clicking on that produces an error screen that says "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe. Do you wish to continue?"
Clicking YES only results is a "rtsp ... 3gp" file can NOT be opened.
So, how did this guy back on June 18, 2007 do it on the Touch as shown in this video ??

I thought that the Sprint Touch supports 3GPP streaming out-of-the-box ?

You need a program called HTC streaming media. Just Google it.
Streaming YouTube on WM6 (Touch included I'd assume)

It's a 2-steps thing:
- Download the TCPMP
- Play Youtube content.
HTH....my 2 cents
second for VTAp. Has videos from all google videos, youtube, and a few other places. Its like connected so its updated the same rate the sites are updated as well. Its just overall great!
i think it s!
is any1 having trouble? i did the ytpocket and when visit youtube on PIE my phone pretty much freezes up...
vTap works great ... thanks for the input !!
vtap is the best that is what im using. works like a charm.
i tried vTap and its okay, but the thing that pisses me off are the load times and the ****ty quality. so i went with typocket.com, they have 2 easy installs that take less than a minute, with GREAT FULL SCREEN quality and super fast load times, almost seems like its streaming
so give ytpocket.com
I've got ytpocket and tcpmp installed. Some reason all videos are very choppy, sound is clean but video looks like its refreshing slowly (like if you don't have the proper video card drivers installed on your pc thats how it looks) Its not buffering or anything.
Are there any tweaks I have to apply to get better video frame rate?

Another good option
I have used vTap and I though it was very good, although I had to put up with a lot of wait icons.
I have been experimenting with this option... http://www.avotmedia.com/ and it has been quite usable so far. Video is very smooth and I have not had one single wait icon while using this program.
Check it out. I originally heard about here or PPCG, one of the two.

Same lag and stutters overhere. Any solutions out there allready?
Default mediaplayer suddenly stopped working on my TP2, though the quality was way better then the core player's. Too bad it doesn't work no more.
can anyone help with this after paying for core player it wont play anything with out stuttering along
everything used to lag for me in coreplayer, including videos but if i switch the audio settings to higher priority for mp3 files they play without a hitch. now if only i can find out how to do the same for videos
Add me to the list of VERY unsatisfied results with Coreplayer on the TP2... it absolutely SUCKS. BIG TIME. Laggy and crappy... how is a man suppose to watch all those great videos stuttering!
I had the same issue (laggy, ...) a couple of months ago. I sent an email to CorePlayer support and got this answer back :
"Hello,
This is a known issue and we are working with several people on trying to track it down and are hopeful to have it included with the next release. I can offer you a full refund if you would like.
Regards,
CoreCodec Support Group"
They expect to release the new version by the end of this month.
Just have to wait...
Hope it helps.
Are you using DirectShow? If not, try it.
Great on TP2
Coreplayer is running great on my TP2. Watched 2 movies today and the video looked great and frames were solid. Honestly its the best thing i did for my TP2 yet. I dont believe it will handle 800x480 but a little bit lower resolution should still be fine and the video scales very well. Check this review on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uONMuEeTo7A&feature=related
Watch near the end when he shows how Coreplayer runs.
REFUND!!!
So I just sent my refund request for Coreplayer. It has a bug with Tv-Out causing it to show a blue flicker. Also it has no real hardware support yet. The best thing I found was the Touch HD gui encoder program. It puts your videos into formats the built in players can use and those do have hardware support. So while coreplayer is a great app its not for the TP2.
Disable DirectDraw in TCPMP. Use GDI mode.
I am not sure if the following has any effect when DirectDraw is disabled, but this is the way I have it:
Select Options\Settings, then click on "Select page" and select DirectDraw.
You will see three options. Only select the one that says "use blitting instead of overlay"
This worked for me...

Best video & codec format for HTC HD2 Playback

Hi,
I am quite new to the Windows Mobile scene buying the new HTC HD2 (Leo).
I am looking to convert movie files from .AVI to .MP4 for my HD2 but I was wondering.
1) What is the best converter to use for a Mac.
2)What is the best settings. I.e. Bitrate, Audio, fps, kbps and so on.
I have tried a couple of settings but really have no clue to the best settings.
Any information and help is much appreciated!
I use the files that also work on my iPhone.
So,
.mp4 h.264
1408kbps or 768kbps
audio 160kbps
fps - I leave as the same as source
As for a MAC program - I would use Handrake.
All just my personal settings - others will of course, have other views.
What's the point of converting AVI? HD2 can play it pretty well without any conversion.

If you read my original reply, I'm using files that I already have for my iPhone. some of which I've converted, others that I've downloaded.
So I've not really wasted any time. I was simply offering an option to the OP.
The main reason I added that it was my opinion, was so that others didn't need to add how things COULD be done differently, just for the sake of it.
now the OP has at least 2 options - Just use the avi's or re-encode ( or grab h.264 files from other sites).

Can I ask you which player do you use.
I have movies on my sd card and with Coreplayer I get error message "File not found!\Storage (FFFFFFF8)". And with Windows media player I get error "Cannot play the file". Movie plays just fine from internal memory but that one lacks space.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
I forgotten to mention that the codec is Xvid.
I have tried playing some of my .avi formatted movies and I get errors with windows media player and I have tried a movie I d/l in .mp4 and both album and media player will play it but the screen is grey with sound and every now and then the picture will come on.
I'm guessing due to wrong settings.
I am just looking for the best settings to get smooth play and clearest viewing. I'm not too fussed with size as I have a large enough card.

I am using the same mate, I had all my AVI files converted to my old iPhone and I have found that they play great on my HTC HD2, infact I think they look even better with bigger screen, But that's just my opion.
The converter I used was download from the Pirate Bay and it's free from their home page VioVideoConverter
I'm not actually using coreplayer.
I did have coreplayer on my HTC Touch HD but i'm seeing about just utilising the album player and windows media player.
Any of the guys using HD2 can test these videos and let me know if they work fine or have problems playing?
http://www.multiupload.com/DYPQ7Q3LDW
I'm using the last Coreplayer.
But I figured if it works for you it should for me to.
So I figured out that if I run movie from Resco explorer or built in explorer the problem is still there but if I run it from Coreplayer via open command the movie works.
So there must be a problem how explorer sends a location path to the coreplayer on HD2.
Is this only me or do you experience the same behavior to?

All three files play, but they seem a bit jerky in places. They're not the best samples to test video with.
They suffer from artifacts in quite a few place using WMP, and in Core Player, they are jerky. Personally, I wouldn't suffer watching them, but they do play.
It looks like you used isom advanced video codec. I find that h.264 gives superb results.

Well, they are done using x264, AVC is just a subset of it. Plays fine on the PC, but I have no HD2 to test yet, so need some help.
Hmm...I'm using mencoder/winmenc to encode, so can't just update without the coders of mencoder updating. Mencoder is in turn a derivative of x264 if i read correctly. Meanwhile I will do some research on a GUI for x264.exe. I've used mencoder for most of my encodes so far on other phones, and it's been pretty good to me.
Here's another two encodes, this time with lesser (only 1) ref-frames, and using the latest version of the mencoder.exe....do let me know if it's better/worse. One is with the [email protected] profile (which i guess will have trouble), the other is with the good old [email protected] profile.

MP4
Bit Rate: 2000-2500(Max)
Frame: 29.97
Audio Codec: mpeg4aac
Bit Rate: 192
Channel: 2
I am using the PS3 pre-settings then changes the video size to 800x480. It's great quality and plays smooth but the file size jumps from 700mb to 1.8g so any idea's on how to bring that down???
I'm still checking out different settings..

Your bitrate is too high.
If you're converting standard def media, 1200-1800 should be more than enough.
Also, if the resolution of the source is less than 800x480 in the first place, don't waste space trying to up the resolution. Re-encode at the original resolution.

Would be much easier to guage a non-animation/less dark sample.

If you rip dvds with something like Nero, you can create DivX avi files that will play a treat in core player.
The native Windows WMP format plays perfectly in media player too.
The native HTC player format is mp4, and to be honest, that looks the best to me, but DivX in core player is about 99% as good.
Whenever I have something to watch, it's usually a DivX file, so I just copy it to the phone and watch it as is, without conversion (about 350MB per hour). I have a 16GB card with about 6GB of music, 2GB of installers and installed apps, and therefore 8GB free to put vids on (at the moment).
I should be able to get about 10 films on there, or 20 typical episodes of TV programs, at the above-stated average size.
A few people have had problems with core player, but there's plenty of settings that you can change. I've got it set to play nicely now, and there's very rarely any lag (toggling fullscreen off and then back on gets rid of that for me), and it looks gorgeous on the massive bright screen.
I am using HTC Touch HD video converter (use search in the forums for download ). It works fine to convert for example divx movies.

I find this to be putting the audio out of sync very slightly when converting xvids etc.

Yes me too. I converted several TV shows and the audio remained out of sync by about 0.25 seconds for the duration.
If you can get Core Player or TCPMP (core player beta) working well (which just takes some settings fondling), then you don't need to convert things. AVIs and MPEGs play perfectly for me.

I know what you mean but I kinda like using the HTC Player, it just feels like a better experience.

Yeah, I know what you mean too! In fairness, the hi-def movie test thread with the helicopters movie on it looks sooooooooo much sharper and cleaner in the HTC player than it does in CorePlayer.
I'm just impatient. I just "rip" a movie or tv show and watch it straight off. I find converters to usually take as long as it takes to watch it.

Hehe, When I get time I am going to dowload a variety of converters and try to find one I like and one that works well. Ideally the one that was made for the HD would be perfect if the audio sync was fixed. I must admit though I havn't had chance to actively look for any solutions to that problem yet.
One thing I would like from the HTC Player would be a resume option.

In CorePlayer, go to Menu, Tools, Settings, Select Page, Video and set output to Raw FrameBuffer or GDI, and make sure quality is High. I also set Smooth Zoom on (not sure what it is though), and turn Dither off (I've had it hang on me when this was on).
I have mine on Raw, and it plays movies that are SD (telly size) perfectly. I can watch them on my TV via my PC, or just copy the AVI onto my memory card and watch them on the phone.
Thank You , I´ll try the new settings when i get home.
Thanks
Thanks for all the posts... damn this forum is so good!!!
Just one thing... is there a way to watch videos in landscape on Coreplayer? The version I have doesnt have that option...

What version are you using? That's been in every version of coreplayer I've had.
I've just done a hard reset on my phone, and haven't installed coreplayer yet, so I can't tell you how to do it exactly, but the it's in menu under options and I believe it's orientation. Also, when a movie is playing it, touching it usually makes it landscape and fullscreen too.

Excellent, using GDI seems to have sorted out my frame flicker during fast moving sequences. Thanks!

Movies Lag On HTC Touch HD....

I tried several movies on the htc and they are not smooth.
Some movies were taken from an old phone that was less powerful and was smooth but is jerky on the htc, why is this?
Yesterday a friend sent a simple video that came with his phone and plays flawlessly for him but for myself it was lagging.
Can anyone think why it's doing this and what I can do to solve the problem?
I tried avi'd, divx/xvid and even mp4 files, all lag. Even different resolutions, say 640x480 or 800x480, etc.
Any suggestions?
Try Core Player. Best player for the HD. If still laggy try another rom.

It was coreplayer, I have never had lagging before until now...
You suspect it being the rom? The rom I have is the Vanilla Rhodium by Kwbr...

Ask within Kwbr's thread to see if others are experiencing this. May be known issue with known solution
Certain versions of core player may work better so if you can get hold of a newer/older version it may help, or at the very least worth a try. After trying out the other available versions and other software options with no luck, I would look for a new rom (As long as you flashed the vanilla kwbr file properly and followed the instructions in their thread to the letter, but then I assumed you went through all these basic steps first anyways).

Yes, I did. It's a shame to change the rom because I'm happy with the rom in every other way.
It's fast and responsive, only slows down when playing any video's.
However, as a few of you mentioned, I will try a different, more later version of core player to see if it solves the problem.
If not, I may need a new rom...
If the worst comes to the worst, which rom/s would you suggest that is good for graphical/video performance which is what I'm looking for...
encode your movies in h.264 baseline level 3 with AAC audio, in the mp4 container. HTC Album/Windows Media Player will then use the hardware decoder to play the videos.

That's possible, but I really wanted a player that plays divx/xvid which is what I want.
I tried 2 versions of TCMP but both give me an error when trying to open, so their no good.
I guess I will try a different version of coreplayer.
Problem solved, changed my rom...
