hero wifi dropping out - Hero, G2 Touch General

Is anyone else having issues with the WiFi stalling and having to reset it, even though signal strength shows as excellent?
It's not a channel interference issue as I know what channels are in use, plus its doing the same on 3 different networks where other devices work fine, I'm using WiFi fixer to reconnect but its still problematic.
What have others found to be the best solution?

Samme issue here. Wifi keeps on disconnecting/loosing the connection and is most of the time unable to reconnect. Have to either turn wifi off/on or choose "forget" and reconfigure the AP my Hero in order to get it to work again.
It´s a Linksys WRT54GX running WPA/WPA2 + TKIP.
Have used an iPhone 3G on the same router for a year now without ´any´ problems.

I'm using WiFi quite often but I don't have this problem with my Hero.
Are you absolutely sure that there isn't any interference? It might be that the Hero is just a bit more sensitive than your iphone.
Today I found G-mon at Market which scans around for WiFi-networks. Perhaps you'll find out that there is a network that's interfering constantly. I've had that a few years ago and then found out that the bus-company uses WiFi on their busses which uses the same channel as I did with my WiFi-network.

Thx for the tip. Checked and no interference.

Also having this problem with a Linksys WRT54G. No WPA though.
I don't trust this router at all; using WPA and connecting a Dell Axim X51v to it in the past used to knock out WLAN on router, needing a hard reset.

same problem here. Wifi is disconnecting randomly within a few meters from the Airport extreme. It also reconnects again...most of the time....without me doing anything.

i'm also having problems with wifi - using a linksys befw11s4 with wep. i've got everythign else turned off - have followed all the instructions i can find here in the forums, and not had any success :/

If you press the Menu button in the Wifi settings you can select Advanced. There's an option there that defines when Wifi is disconnected. If you set this to Never than the Wifi connection will be stable. (At least in my case it is).

Again, thx for the tip but this is not really considered a "solution" but rather a workaround.
I don't like the idea of having it on "allways on". A real battery drainer and it shouldn't be necessary.

I had similar issues with my wifi (Linksys WRT160NL) until I installed "Wifi Fixer" from the market on my hero. Since then wifi runs without problems!

I had similar problem, Linksys WRT54G v1.0 running fairly old (but latest available) Linksys firmware, with WPA/PSK.
Yesterday, re-flashed router to Tomato (based on HyperWRT), setup for WPA2/PSK(AES) and now all is working perfectly, no problems at all.
So looks like some incompatibility between the Hero and the Linksys firmware, for WPA.

Well, I'm running the latest firmware for my router but have now done some other configuration changes and it seem somewhat consistent with your findings.
Previously it was running in a "WPA, WPA2 + TKIP" mode but it has now been working flawlessly since I change it to "WPA2 + AES". Hence:
- WPA2
- AES
=
- WPA, WPA2
- TKIP
=
Info, update on the router: I'm having a WRT54GX, not WRT54G.

interesting; I had no choice but to upgrade, as the newest firmware for the v1.0 WRT54G doesn't - I believe - support WPA2.
Since I had many other wireless clients working fine with WPA (not WPA2), but not the Hero, one wonders if there are some WPA bugs on the Hero that get tickled by older routers, or just that the Hero is being less lenient than other clients.
glad yours is better too, anyway

I found that wifi performance and stability on the hero improved a lot when I changed my AP from dynamic 802.11 b/g/n operation to 802.11g only. I've seen other boxes with linux having similar issues with this AP (D-Link DIR-655), which points towards a driver issue. Wifi works better on Linux kernel 2.6.30 and later on notebooks so things should improve once HTC produce a build that include a more recent kernel. Wifi was quite a headache on notebooks too with the drivers in kernel 2.6.27.x that is included in the current hero firmware.

I have same problem - frequent line drops whne full strenght signal shows
I also have a Linksys WRT54G - never had any problems before.
tried wep and wpa -no difference.
Also tried some "always On" utility from the market place, it only helped reset it quicker.

As stated above, mine got more stable when fixing router to WPA2+AES but I now realize that I still do experience connectivity issues, although less frequently then before...

i don't think this has anyting to do with the router. I got a router from HUAWEI,forgot its brand, but not linksys for sure. I've tried the university wifi as well. they all have the same issue.

Mine is working great with a Belkin.
Looks like a problem with the Linksys firmware.
Anyone tried a firmware upgrade on the router?

Indeed, if you read up just a few posts, you'll find that question answered

that said, although things seemed initially to get better, I'm still seeing regular drop-outs with the upgraded router, and now still with the Hero upgraded to the HTC 2.0 ROM.
I do note that it seems to drop most when I'm sitting quite close to a different strong wireless client, e.g. a laptop. Perhaps the Hero just isn't a strong enough signal, and gets swamped?
Anyone else notice a correlation between dropouts, and proximity to other clients?

Hanging Wifi Problems on HTC Dream

ISSUE
Every 3 - 5 minutes while browsing, my wifi will "hang" (timeout when trying to access sites). Note: it doesn't disconnect, the wifi icon is still there as if I was connected, it will just timeout any requests.
TEMP FIX
Reconnecting will fix the problem until it occurs in another 3 - 5 minutes.
VERIFICATION
This is not an issue when using my device on my friend's home WIFI connection.
WHAT I'VE TRIED
Updating my Linksys WRT54G Ver. 2.0 router to the latest firmware.
Switching from WEP to WPA (TKIS) encryption.
Trying different wireless frequencies (i.e. different channels)
Manually setting MTU to 1500 for my broadband connection
Resetting router & Modem
Setting a static IP on my phone (only wifi settings I can change on my phone).
COMMENTS
I think switching from WEP to WPA (TKIS) sped up my connection (but didn't fix the hanging). I didn't do enough testing to verify this but I ran 4 speed tests (1 with WEP then 1 with WPA then one with WEP then one with WPA) and in all occasions with WPA (TKIS) encryption my speedtest results were nigh twice as fast as the results when using WEP encryption. Odd...?
This isn't an issue on my laptop when using my WIFI connection, however, that doesn't say much since I likely have a much better receiver in my laptop (an Intel wireless N card) and it's not to say my laptop gets a perfect connection (I can't play Team Fortress 2 on WIFI anymore because of lag spikes - need to play with wired connection), but it just doesn't have this hanging problem.
If anyone has any ideas of other things I could try to get this working I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.
Hey,
Iam wondering, after flashing tomal 8.7, I have the same problem as you with my universal. Did you found any solution?

Hi,
It looks that I've got the same issue as you have - the connection is still active (at least, the icon shows that), but after a couple of minutes, I cannot access any website.
Did you guys find any solution to this problem?
thank you very much
Ive had that problem with a few routers(i know the answers late, but maybe it will help someone at least). I had to disable the routers firewall. Once that was done, no disconnects. Weird.

Not sure why cannot get connected to wifi since day 1

Hi Friends,
Hope you could help. I have a X1 and I been trying to get it connected to my DIR-655 thru wifi with no avail. Surprisingly, I have 2 wifi network at home and it could get connected to the other one. I am sure it is not a router issue as my iPhone could connect to it using same login settings. Both my wifi routers are on WPA2. This is really puzzling me.
Cheers and thanks,
I have trouble with WPA2 security as well. WEP works just fine, though.

But the thing is it is working with WPA2 with my other router. Very strange.
I have the same issue. Can't connect to my wi-fi router at home, though have no trouble to access others. Or better to say I get connected, but internet is working either too slow and too short, or not working at all.
I did have this issue when I gott my X1,
after a few days I unplugged the router for 2 mins and plugged back in, then waited until it started up and tried to connnect and it worked.
dont know why it worked it just did so maybe it will help you?
Have you tried logging on to your router, and allowing your X1's IP address.
Thats what i had to do on my netgear.
well, I've even arranged a static ip for the mac-adress of my x1, enabled DMZ for that ip, but still doesn't help.
I've pulled the plug of the router out many times so far, doesn't seem to help.
routers are basically rather small computers
their firmware have bugs
which is why the manufactures
put out firmware updates to fix those
newer wifi devices like phone of often give issues
with older routers with older firmware
updating firmware is pretty easy and can be downloaded from the manufactures site
yesterday I tried again and I don't why, but it is working now still a bit slow and some programs don't connect (QIP, SPb Online tv etc), but at least browsing works.
p.s. forgot about router firmware, gonna try it tomorrow.

WiFi data transfer problem

I have a ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A Wireless router. I have tried all combinations of security, even NO SECURITY WHATSOEVER, and still the device won't transfer data.
Not working;
Firmware: 1.5, Build: CR817
Wifi Router: ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A
Security: Tried All; WPA2, WPA, WEP & None.
Problem: Connect under all conditions but no data is sent
Please help.
Have you tried another WiFi access point to check the devices WiFi module actually functions?
No, I haven't tried that yet, but don't really see the point... I've connected effortlessly to the same WiFi network with my HTC Touch Diamond.

For some reason my N800 wouldn't connect to MY ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A unless I set the device (N800) to disable any kind of wifi powersaving features it had.
On another note, how did you get your hands on the device so early? I'm guessing you are using a Cybercity internet connection? (I'm in copenhagen myself)
edit: I actually came to that solution when i noticed I could connect to OTHER accespoints, but not the Zyxel ones.
Same problem here in France with a Freebox as router
I've noticed under the router's WLAN client list that the device does not have a "Host Name". Would that present a problem?
It is assigned an IP address by the router without any problems, though.
Also the device seems to lose connection and reconnect constantly (every 5-10 seconds).
I done some digging around in the router settings and found an "AnyIP" feature. Would that possibly help?
There are a number of issues floating around. Support for WPA2 seems iffy and some people can just change to WPA or WEP and all work fine.
There are however a number of people (such as me) who can get a connection perfectly, it shows connection OK, they get an IP from the DHCP server etc, they can even browse a page for a few seconds... but after that no data is sent and everything times out. This is happening on any security from none through to WPA2.
I have seen no solution to this anywhere and believe me I have looked. Some people have given up and got a new router, but this is not a solution.
Can someone confirm that this has been recognised as a fault with the magic and is being investigated, rather then assuming it's a user or router error. There are far too many instances of this across many brands of router for it not to be an issue with the HTC Magic.

What I mean is have you tested the device on ANY other AP except the ZyXEL?
No, but since I'm by far the only one having this issue (try searching the web; see my last post), I didn't feel it was necessary. Just want some input from xda-dev that might solve the problem, if any.

I've had exactly the same problem earlier with the N800 on the zyxel. Exactly how you describe it.
Did you find out if you could turn off any powersaving features on the HTC?
same problem here
in france with a freebox
I don't exaclty know what router is in the box
but I have excalty the same
I set on never the wifi sleep(powersaving) mode.
i found it in setting wifi menu button then advanced and "never"
but the problem is still here

Could be DHCP lease time problem. Did anyone of you tried to set up Magic with Static IP?
Yes, I tried that also - didn't help one bit.

I also have this problem. Im in Denmark with a Zyxel P660HW-p1.
Another user of Cybercity in Denmark with the same problem.
ZyXEL P-660HW-D1
The android is the only device that doesn't work. I have tried with Iphone and laptops.
I've tried to change the settings on the router to no avail.
Enable 802.11g+ mode [on/off]
RTS/CTS Threshold [2432/4096]
RTS/CTS Threshold [2432/4096]
Max. Frame Burst [600/1800]
The device shows up in the device list with no hostname, the HTC Magic gets the right ip address (using the program WhatIsMyIp to view it)
I had the same problem before, when I set my TP-LINK draft N router with WEP security my HD can see it, connect to it (but speed was slow tho), and my HTC Magic just keep saying its not in range. However, when I set it to open security it works, so I recognise its probably the security setting... so I changed that to WPA2 and then it works.
In my case, I see different device have different tolerance to some settings (in my case, draft N + WEP is OK with laptop, HTC HD, but not Magic), so its still worthwhile to try a few different settings, and try a public wireless access point also to double confirm?
Power save?
I have Zyxel (P-2602R-D1A) router.
I had exactly the same problem with my HTC Vox (winmo)... but that was solved by boosting the WiFi in the phone.
WiFi -> Best performance
So Im guessing magic is in some WiFi "power save" mode...
I dont know how this works, but I thought maybe you could change some WiFi settings behind the hood - that is if the hardware is capable of it.
Zyxel (P-2602R-D1A) router
I am having the same issue with this router as the other posters. The phone connects perfectly and reports an excellent signal, but barely sends or receives any data. I have used a terminal emulator to ping the router and it reports an 82% packet loss. This must be a big problem for many Danish users as it is the standard wifi router provided by two of the major ISP's.
same issue here with my vodafone uk magic.
wifi connects and i can browse for a few seconds then get a connection error and can't browse until i re-start wifi on the magic...
i've actually given up using wifi at home now due to this.
router is a talktalk supplied Huawei Echolife HG520b using 128 bit WEP
i can connect fine via wifi at the office so i don't think it's an issue with the handset, just with certain routers or router configs...
this issue has been reported on the vodafone uk forums but as yet no solution.

Major WiFi connection issue

Hi
I've had a search in the forums but haven't seen any other posts re. this but wondered if anyone had any ideas?!
Basically I'm having problems connecting to some networks with my Tab 10.1 (stock, updated OTA to the latest TouchWiz UX last week).
I first had a problem last week when I took the device into work - there's an 802.1x EAP network there but it wouldn't even show up in the network list. My SGS2 connects to it without an issue.
Then when I got home tonight (after happily using it at my parents' house during the day) I found it wouldn't connect to my home WiFi (hidden SSID, WPA2). It had connected to this network fine in the past, but now was just sitting showing it as 'not in range' network. At first I thought it might be a router issue (it used to be a little flaky), but then I saw that my iPod and SGS2 were both connecting and working on it without a hitch.
I couldn't see the network at all in WiFi Analyzer (similarly to at work), although it was showing my neighbours' WiFi networks fine. I tried deleting the saved entry and telling the router to broadcast the SSID but it still wouldn't work.
I then put on my WiFi hotspot on my SGS2 (also a previously remembered connection) and it worked absolutely fine!
Does anyone have any ideas where to go next apart from doing a full reset? (which although not the end of the world would be quite a pain).
Thanks for any suggestions/tips!
OK, bit the bullet and restore my device to factory settings - it STILL can't see my home WiFi, despite my SGS2, laptop and iPod all connecting to it fine. It is however showing up two networks belonging to neighbours and also my SGS2 if I put it in WiFi hotspot mode!
Any suggestions folks??
Sounds like a route issue, did you reboot the router? Is the router on a channel below 12?
Hi thanks for the reply!
I actually just spotted a post at http://www.thegalaxytabforum.com/index.php?/topic/5511-my-wifi-no-longer-works/ with the same issue.
It looks like Samsung have mucked something up when they made the Touchwiz UX update - it now blocks WiFi channels 12 upwards, when the old stock Honeycomb firmware didn't do this. I'd moved my router onto 13 to reduce congestion and I guess the work one must be on 12/13 too.
I can see from the table at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels that 12/13 are only allowed under low-power conditions in the USA, but this isn't the case elsewhere so they shouldn't have locked it down outside of the USA.
This also happend to me

As I had setup an additional router in my house (with assigned a high numbered -or so i thought- fixed IP address) for some reason my main router tryied unseccesfully to assign the same IP to my SGT as the router. This had obviously conflicts and could not log in.
Went into the router eliminated the fixed IP address and voilá! it got working again, all IP a dinamic!!

GT-I9505 deteriorating wifi functionality (not D-Link related)

I have had my phone for over a month and for the last 5 days I have experienced really poor wifi performance. I've read that there has been a lot of problems with D-Link routers and such but my wifi was working OK up until the last week and I do not use D-Link (although the chips maybe the same from what I have read). I have tried to see whether it can be related to an app update but I can't systematically test that. Dropped the phone a couple of times on the floor from my sofa, can this be it?
I get full signal when standing next to the router but the signal drop dramatically when moving away. Mobile signal and transfer speeds are all OK. I will try and test other routers when I get the chance.
Any thoughts?

Stock GT-I9505
Kaspersky Mobile Security installed (I've read somewhere that this might be a problem?)
Home router TP-Link (TD-W8961ND v1.1)
Work router TP-Link (TD-W8901G 3.2)
Strange...
Couple of questions?
1) Are you on 802.11G or 802.11N at home? (I know the TD-W8901G is 802.11G only)
2) If on 802.11N at home are you running the antenna at 2.4 or 5Ghz?
3) Have you checked your router's antenna (assuming you have an external antenna) for damage or disconnection?
4) Do you have a case on your phone? Does the signal get better without the case on it?
5) Is there anything else in the house that could be interfering with the 2.4Ghz wireless signal (wireless cameras, cordless phones, etc.)?

The TV uses our wlan and of course a couple of other phones too.
The router at home is a TD-W8961ND v1.1. If I stand in an adjacent room at home (4-5m), door open, I can see the router then I have -70dBm according to the Wifi Analyzer app. Is that what can be expected? Thing is that I use the phone from upstairs, concrete floor and it has been ok, no problem streaming Netflix and such but that doesn't work now. No problems from my desktop computer which also use the wlan.
This is so fuzzy that I am going to start recording the signal strength to get some references. I tested my laptop at work today at a specific location from where I normally use the phone and the signal was worse on the laptop too (Windows 8 Pro and signal showed 1 bar, then full signal strengh, 1 bar and so on). Damn. I am slowly getting cross eyed here.
I have deactivated all bloatware on the phone, removed apps I do not use and one app I have been suspicious of is Wordfeud but of course I have no concrete information on that. Remember from my old HTC DZ that it seemed to be hard on the network on the phone.
Gotta sleep and thanks for your reply!
I have had the same problem with my galaxy s4. wi-fi had appeared connected on the phone but web pages were not loading. got a replacement s4 thinking it was the phone. had the second phone for a week and was working fine and then installed kaspersky mobile and wi-fi was very intermittent again. Did not occur to me initially and a lot of research got me my result. Had tinkered with TKIP and AES settings on modem as some people had luck with that but that was due to D-link routers as well known. uninstalled kaspersky mobile and wi-fi has worked perfectly ever since! There may be certain older kaspersky mobile software versions still compatible but dont know which one as yet.

Thanks for the info. I have removed Kaspersky meanwhile to see whether it helps. I've done so many changes at home to my WIFI router and a connected TP_Link AP(TL-WA901N).
Yesterday I could connect to my TL-WA901N upstairs for the first time (its been used for the TV only so far), Kaspersky removed, changes made in the TL-WA901N and TD-W8961ND and after fidgeting back and forth I cannot pinpoint what exactly made me connect via the AP. So I cannot blame Kaspersky but I will reinstall it later and if I get problems again then I know. I will update the results here. Network issues isn't my cup of tea.
Signal strength is the same, will test the bandwidth when I get home.
OK so I have now solved the problem. Bought a new router which supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz. It seems like the two frequencies complement each other in our apartment. Re-installed Kaspersky and I have not had any problems.
