Is blackstone's processor bad? - Touch HD General

Hey there
This might be a bit stupid question but I am curious.
I already own blackstone for some time and I love it..
But I am curious. Is blackstone's 528 MHz processor bad?
There aer new devices coming with 600 MHz. Of course they are faster and newer but in comparison with blackstone, is it too much difference?
Does somebody know?
Thanks.

Think of it like you would with a personal computer. This device has been out for some time now and newer technology is available now. A 528 MHz processor for a phone is pretty good in my opinion but things always get better.
Is it bad? No way, not at all. The Touch HD is a great device. It can be very fast and productive, especially if you run custom ROM's on it.
There are even better things than a 600 MHz processor already available and coming out soon. The HTC Firestone is rumored to have the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Other processors like the Atom and the Tegra are viable options as well...

The Processor in the X1

Coming from the Rokr E6(that came out in 2006) that has a intel PXA270 Rev7(v51) processor, a part from the built Ati graphic chip in the Qualcomm I am very dissapointed. I know the the processors are different but come on, The E6 was clocked at 312MHZ and could be boosted to 530MHZ and 624MHZ and was a single core processor. Today I got real excited because I found this app called nueCPL-ClockSpeed v1.3 thinking finally I will be able to this push Duel core Processor higher than a measley 528mhz.Sadly, come to find out the app limit to push the processor was only 528mhz. I posted a screen shot to show. Does anybody that knows the ins and outs of the Qualcomm MSM2700, know if it can be pushed higher than 528MHZ and would be so kind enough to list the apps that can do it.
After searching this forum for some type of answer, I came to the conclusion that I'm never buying a phone with a qualcomm processor again.

lol, you aren't the first person to express disappointment with qualcomm.
It's not a bad processor, but for our smartphones (which the average XDA member probably requires a lot of CPU power) it is a little weak. I think the average Joe with a stock WinMo phone would be fine with it, but I must admit I am underwhelmed.
I want Snapdragon in my next phone.

on this site you have mostly all smartphones and their processors. and its said that 528Mhz is the Max recomendable speed so i gues its not possible to set it to more then 528MHz. but if you look at devices with these processor X1 was one of the first that used this processor. and even this year there were good phones that used this 2 year old processor technology (HTC Touch Pro 2, HTC HERO). Shure its no 1 or 1.5 GHz Snapdragon but i think its a fine processor. N97 has weaker processor and alot of folks think N97 is better than X1 (I still dont agree with them).

thank you for the link, it's not a bad processor but it's defiantly to weak to run WM, My phone freezes everyday which is freakin ridicouls I've never had this problem with my old phone which had a far less superior processor, then again my old phone ran linux and I'm using the original rom that came with the phone but still thats no excuse for having to reset my phone every day and even running the latest thigs to improve perfomance like advace config etc.....
Hi guys, i think most of you have heard the rumor about the X1 CPU is underclocked to 400MHz.
Is it true or not? I found something about the battery status app showing only 400MHz, but someone said that 400MHz is the max frequency battery status can show. Then i found something with the Xperia X2 info tool (dont know the name) showing 400MHz, too.
I downloaded nueClockControl, it shows 528MHz.

The frequency IS 528MHz. Try the JBenchmark estimator if you don't believe nueClockControl:
http://www.jbenchmark.com/jbacepr.jsp Mine shows 515MHz estimated.
Some MSM chips can be overclocked. I have had my TP run at 800Mhz before.
Check THIS out.
Pretty sure it won't work with the X1 but who knows.
dwizzy130
Unfortunalety it's not working with X1 (stock german ROM). The phone freezes instantly when i confirm the Clock change to 768 MHz.
I was a little disappointed of the X1, when i tried to run Super Mario or Mario Kart on SNES Emu (not to mention Metal Slug 2 @ FinalBurn, it's even worse). I thought this would be working better with more than 500Mhz and 256mb RAM. I hate to play games without sound.
I wish it would be as good as a PSP at 222 MHz. Ok, PSP has only 480x272, but also it has only 32mb RAM and only 2mb RAM for GPU.

I feel your pain. Add me to those who are disappointed with the Qualcomm 7200 and will not buy another WinMo phone without a 1 GHz processor. Otherwise, here are some confirmations and other observations:
- The current X1 processor DOES run at 528 MHz as others have mentioned above
- It CAN be overclocked to 768 (or so) with neuOverclock and it's like a sweet dream, but...
- neuOverclock is highly unstable. Most of the time it simply freezes the phone, requiring a reset. For some reason I could only usually get it to work about once a day, no matter how many variations I tried (eg in airplane mode etc etc).
- Unfortunately the genius (seriously) who developed nueOverclock has gone completely silent on his web site and is not still developing - huge bummer in my opinion. I would make a big donation to anyone who could provide a solid overclocking program, and I bet I'm not the only one.

Go for it! Tell him I got $20 in my pocket I'm ready to part with!
If someone could really develop a stable overclocking tool, i would pay for that too.
I'd like to buy a HD2, but without a contract(subscription) it costs over 650€ here in Germany.
Even with subscription it costs 220€ + 35€/Month for 2 years.
I can only dream of 1GHz Snapdragon and 4.3 inch screen
PS: I bought my Xperia for 280€ (with 8GB Micro SD) from Ebay in September.
The previous owner paid 720€ (without subscription) at release ...
PPS: Iphone 3GS 32GB is about 850€ without subscription, thats kind of weird
Damn.. I was rlle excited to see some people as frustrated as me with quads performance and were looking for ways to improve it but the fact nueOverclock just freezes is a letdown also. I hope someone can find the creator or another usefull method!! let the search begin!

Speed of snapdragon cpu

Hello to everybody.
I read somewhere that the cpu on hd2 is set slower than the maximum.
Is it true? there's a possibility to benchmark it or not?
If true I suppose it is necessary to use cooked roms (when available) to set it to 1 GHz and so obtain the top performance...
I am asking it because I am a newbie of the forum, of windows mobile and smartphone in general...
Thanks a lot.
don't believe everything that you read.
AFAIK there's no benchmark that supports snapdragon, so how can it possibly say what the processor is, never mind what speed it runs at?
***EDIT*** I speak too soon..
looks like sktools does support snapdragon in it's benchmark in the latest version:
Integer test..
I got 812.05
theres a HTC TOUCH HD2 WM6.5
Qualcomm (R) QSD8258B 1GHZ
as one of the comparison devices..
it scores 813.45
DAMN MY HD2 is slow ****
**** ROFL as if
to be exact, it totally doesn`t matter for me, but>
i read somewhere, that snapdragon is going to be (or it is) used in some subnotebooks or whatever are they calling... and for PDA`s is underclocked from 1,3 GHz to 1024 MHz... don`t know if it is true...
the CPU is not "underclocked"
but the problem is that inbuild graphic accelerator is not working, HTC did not supply drivers for some reason(some say legal issues)
i really dont get it.. why they build something in this mobile phone, when they dont want to use it.. are they $%#@!!**%# or what i just hope, some "masterhacker" will make a driver for this baby and we will have a real "unleashed beast"

Wow another "HTC didn't supply the drivers" BULL**** thread! Can you stop spreading lies please?
Mods should closes this.
Bad drivers
It would not surprise me if the drivers were giving lower performance than possible.
This really did happen with the Touch Cruise which was painfully slow,
until Guys here developed some very good drivers, which made the TC perform at much higher speeds than originally.
Good news is that the same guys, Chainfire & Neo are working on improved drivers for graphics & processor.

Overclock?

Is anyone aware of over clocking on the hummingbird? 45nm process cpu should be an advantage.
Posted from a T-mobile G1 cyanogen ROM. This platform has reached its limits, my contract has reached its end, t-mo and HTC have failed to produce a suitable replacement. Epic here I come!
5years+ with t-mo.
Overclocking a 1GHz processor is hardly worth it, unless its used with underclocking for battery life.
I'm really sad there won't be any Cyanogenmod for any of the Samsung phones. I'm hoping he has a change of heart.... Otherwise I'm just looking for a good rom.
T-Mobile has horrible coverage in my area. Need me some epic!
We can go from 1000 MHz to 1300 MHz with 65nm CPU.Since its a 45nm CPU we should be able to get 300 to 1000 more MHz with a kernel with voltage increase. The galaxy s 2 has 2000 MHz CPU with 45nm processor.
Cyanogen
Is it confirmed that cyanogen won't do samsung? This seems to be the most widely distributed Android superphone ever.

Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I bet we will pretty easily, but nobody really knows at this point. The only similar processors are in the iPad, iPhone 4 and DROID X, and all those devices are locked down pretty hard. I think the Galaxy is going to show whether or not this chip can actually be overclocked.
I wouldn't be too suprised to see 2ghz, although I think the most anybody would actually want on their phone is about 1.6.

Why is 1.6 ghz pushing the limit? I did some research and it seems the Motorola droid can go to 1.3 or 1.5 ghz without issues and is potentially going to be OCed to 1.8ghz in the not too distant future, if it hasn't been already. Now if you take into account that the Droid uses the old TI OMAP 3430 processor, which is a Cortex A8 architecture processor made on the 65nm process and the Hummingbird processor in the Galaxy S phones is also a cortex A8 but made at the 45nm process, it sounds like 1.6ghz is definitely doable, maybe on the high end for reasonable every day use, but 2 ghz definitely sounds feasible to me at this point. However only time will tell. This definitely justifies the idea of a 2 ghz phone being released before the end of the year though. It will just require high binned processors.
Cyanogen strikes me as the type of guy where if the phone was sitting in front of him he would be helpless to resist tinkering with it.
We may want to start a pool to buy him one.

I think 2 ghz is feasible as well since the are already pushing the new cpu to 2 ghz in the galaxy s 2. It really all depends on the cooling system in the epic 4g. If it can cool the cpu enough i see no reason why we cant hit 2 ghz. I just hope they didnt screw up the cooling with the added keyboard. It would suck to see all galaxy s lines running at 2 ghz but the epic held back by the changes for the keyboard.

I don't think there should be any concern about whether or not CM will be ported. The big question will be what complications arise from the extra features of the Epic, like the keyboard, 4G radio, LED, etc.

Well put.
THere will not be 2ghz phones for a very long time. Apple choose to clock the iPhone 4 at around 700mhz even though it is fully capable of doing 1GHz. There are going to be power consumption concerns, the galaxy and droid x cna get away with 1ghz because of the large batteries but smaller phones will probably need to be underclocked. A phone running at 2ghz will use significantly more than twice as much power as the galaxy s, and that just isn't practical on a phone.
Snapdragon seems to be able to achieve higher clock speeds, but it also seems to be less efficient per clock, judging by how the droid x and galaxy s are both faster than the identically clocked EVO and N1. So maybe we will see snapdragons in the 1.5ghz+ range, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be significantly, if at all, faster than the 1ghz OMAP/Hummingbird processors we have already.

I thought the ONLY thing similar was the initial clock speed, other than that they were a TOTALLY different architecture, as evidenced by 3d performance (iPad = 20 million tringles/second, Galaxy S = 90 million triangles/second.)
I think the processor differencve was like comparing P4 tech to core I7 tech, which leads me to wonder why would you overclock it since the performance is alredy 4 times that of the pther phones.
Like what some of the earlier posters said, would like the ability to underclock the Hummingbird to extend the battery life. Since its performance is way better than the Snapdragon, its like having a HTC Incredible/EVO but have extra 10/20/30% battery life.

Tegra 2 overclocking?

Any info out there about this baby overclocked? Will standard overclocking tools work or does new software need to be devloped?
To overclock the cpu I think you'd need a custom kernel that allows it first. But if the bootloader is locked then custom kernels can't be flashed.
You won't have to worry about performance issues with tegra 2 for while though .
As if you needed to run Crysis on it?
Tough crowd this morning!
This site is here for getting the most out of devices. Rooting and removing bloatware increases performance. Customized ROMS increase perfomance and user experience. I merely asked about another tool for optimizing a device.

Snapdragon is far from being the worst CPU, clock for clock. First of all, Snapdragon is not a CPU, is a SoC (System on a Chip), and the CPU core inside Snapdragon is called Scorpion. Scorpion is neither a standard ARM Cortex A8 nor A9 core unlike the CPU core inside the Hummingbird/TI OMAP/Nvidia Tegra. But it can be thought of as among the same class as Cortex A8 CPUs. The Scorpion has some big advantage over standard Cortex A8 core in some areas (e.g. floating point). The reason why many found the first generation (in Nexus One and HTC Desire) to be "slow" was that they look only at composite benchmark like Quadrant and/or 3D games. The first generation of Snapdragon has a rather dated GPU (Adreno 200) in it, and Adreno 200's 3D performance is honestly, bad. The second generation Snapdragon (Desire Z/G2, Desire HD) uses a much faster GPU, Adreno 205, making the Snapdragon 3D performance on par with Hummingbird and other current generation SoC.
So before you go again saying Snapdragon is the slowest "CPU", go do some reading, and think, before saying. Here is some good reading for you:

if you blindly trust benchmarks the Scorpion CPU in the 2nd gen snapdragons are quite fast... my G2 benchmarks at...
Quadrant: 2,700ish
Linpack: 52.69
Sunspider:2,257
Neocore:57
infact, all of those benchmarks either match, or surpass the Atrix 4G.
No problems here with my snapdragon 1Ghz. linpacks constant 42+
Now that the phone is rooted can we use setCPU to underclock it so to save battery.
Or does setcpu not support dual core.
Also is what I said above true. if we have root we can underclock without putting custom kernels.
The nvidia tegra 2 kernel does not have a simple method to modify the CPU freq table. The dev working on the gtablet kernel would be a good resource to ask, his name is Pershoot. From my understanding he would have to backport the original ARM scaling which is not trivial in the least.
Maybe someone can figure out another way.

Sorry to go off-topic there. But I do have a question. Isn't the Tegra 2 ARM9 based? And there's nothing wrong with wanting to push a device to it's limits. Overclocking is fun.

Because you can make it better. Why settle for less? My captivate is fast and does everything I need it to do at 1ghz but I have it at 1.3 now; and under volted.
Why? Because it is better.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
Is there a simple way to backup all the apps installed on my phone so I can just dump them instantly into a new phone? Preferably without having to hit "install" for every app on the market.
wow, its a dual core processor and you want OC... ugh, get out... lol

Possible GPU Improvements?

Hi every1.
Was just reading this article :
http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=257
It is QUITE interesting to see that the Flyer scores so much higher in GPU compared to the Desire HD...
Could it be there are improved GPU drivers? Could this be the reason HTC Sense 3.0 is coming to the Flyer but NOT the Desire HD?
If this is the case, maybe some developers could get something valuable out of a possible Rom dump?
Any Ideas?
It might not be using the same GPU, that's just speculation according to that site
Due to the much higher res, it would also need a much better GPU to get higher scores, I doubt it's using the 205 looking at those results and that res

Yes but Qualcomm (as far as we know) doesn't have any single cores with the 220.
Which is why I assume it has to be the 205. Or else Qualcomm made an exclusive for HTC?
In that case maybe HTC does have a point saying that parts of Sense 3.0 wont make it onto the Desire HD line because of hardware limitations...
Hm...
From what I've read over the net, the Flyer is running a dual-core clocked at 1.5Ghz? Which leads me to believe it'll be an Adreno 220.
I would be very disappointed the Flyer won't ship with a dual core chip given the competition. At minimum I'd expect the same specs as the recently announced HTC Sensation.

But it could be dual-core with locked secound core... And Ardeno 220. I don't belive they have just build bigger desire HD, OC'ed CPU and thats it.

It could also be quad-core with three cores locked, but I doubt it I think they would have advertised it as dual-core if it really was that.
Like someone else mentioned, the Flyer is using a single core for sure and most likely the same GPU as the Desire HD.
I would speculate that the score is so much higher because the Flyer is running Gingerbread. Gingerbread was said to improve graphics performance with better driver support, and maybe HTC decided to optimize their Adreno drivers too which probably explains the jump in performance.
To be honest this actually makes me a little more excited for the Gingerbread update coming anytime now because we'll probably get the same improvements

Hmm... knowing HTC, they probably wont bring any graphical improvements. We will probably have to get some dev to get what ever HTC did to improve the drivers.

I stand corrected! I just had a peep on pdadb.net and it's reporting a single core 1.5Ghz chip with Adreno 205 GPU in it. Obviously take that with a pinch of salt, anything can happen from now till release day.
If it is running an Adreno 205, then lets hope they have developed an optimized driver that can be ported.
Has anyone (I say anyone, I mean devs) had a look at the Xperia Play GPU drivers yet? Same chipset, but apparently heavily optimised drivers. I think LeeDrOiD was going to look into it but I'm not sure if he got round to it.
+1
Even an employee in Qualcomm said that the graphic driver in desire hd is somewhat "immature"
But there's another possibility, the flyer may use dual channel ddrs which makes its memory bandwidth doubles the dhd, and we don't have dedicated vram, so.......?

Attention, smartbench is always leaning towards Samsung.
Sensation in smartbench is even weaker then i9000 in gaming. But GLbenchmark tells differently, it shows 3rd gen snapdragon is faster than tegra2 in graphics(optimus 2x)

I for one don't trust any(and I mean ANY) synthetic benchmarks. The only benchmarks I trust are the ones dedicated to a certain aspect of the device,e.g Linpack for CPU,Nenamark/GLBenchmark etc for CPU and so on.Synthetic benchmarks can be quite unreliable.

True.
Because those dedicated benchmarks are much more professional.
