Question to all those who've had Xperia X1 (or replacements) for over 6 months! :) - XPERIA X1 General

So here are the questions:
A) What were your top alternative candidates (in order of importance) (including the reasons why) for the Xperia X1?
B) What was the primary phone that you used prior to this?

D) Do you have any facts that you would like to share about yourself (must involve phones)?
Here are my answers:
[A] My Past Candidates
[1] HTC Touch Pro
[X] I like the Touch Pro keyboard more than the X1's, but it lacked the headphone jack the X1 had. I decided that since the X1 keyboard is pretty good, then I might as well get the "combo".
[2] Stay with my Nokia N95
[X] Stereo Speakers were much better than the X1's, but I would sacrifice the speakers for a good keyboard. I needed that for productivity in school.
[X] I already had this phone, and I would have saved so much money if I had not gotten a new phone.
[3] Nokia E90
[X] I liked the Nokia E90's Keyboard more than both the X1 and the Touch Pro's, but I was familiar with Symbian Software, so I didn't expect it to be as productive as Windows Mobile. Therefore: what is the point in having a good keyboard if you aren't going to enjoy it?
[X] Furthermore, I knew that installing software on a Symbian S60 was a pain in the butt, so I decided not to get the E90. I didn't have trouble with the N95 because I already had the software that I wanted for my device.
[X] The dual screen was interesting, and I really like the numeric keys on the front. I realized that having an MP3 player would be a pain in the ass because of the 2.5 mm headphone requirements and that it didn't have a touch screen to make multimedia easy and fun. Another turn off.
[X] The main screen was bigger than the X1, so I was also tempted. But not until I after I bought the X1 that I realized that the Nokia E90's screen was much bigger than I expected. So I still envy the E90.
[X] I felt that the Nokia E90 was a more professional and a more business-like phone than the X1.
[4] 4 Samsung SCH-i760
[X] I really like the numeric keys on the front, and it was the only reason why I wanted to get the phone! (Shocking isn't it?)
[X] Major cons: 2.5 headphone requirement, crappy camera, no front camera, no GPS, didn't support SDHC cards but now it can support it.
[X] I like the design: placement of windows and okay keys, numeric keypad, placement of end and call, telescopic stylus and convenient location, has an actual D-pad that is much better than the X1's, very large battery capacity, reset button is located on the keyboard, cheap.
[5] HTC TyTn II
[X] Tilting Screen, and scroll wheel was attractive compared to the X1
[X] The video driver issue prevented me from getting this delicious goody.
[X] The lack of 3.5 mm headphone jack eventually forced me to put this down at the bottom of the list.
[X] I still think the Samsung SCH-i760 is better than the Tilt
Nokia N95 8GB
[C] Top Candidates That Ran Against My Previous Phone
[1] Nokia E90
[X] It had everything I could have ever wanted in the business aspects. But back then I prioritized an ultimate multimedia experience: Excellent N95 Camera, Accelerometer, Loud High Fidelity Stereo Speakers, Multimedia Buttons, 3.5 mm headphone jack.
[2] HTC TyTn II
[X] I really, really wanted this phone but I heard of the video drivers issue and I liked thought the E90 was way more unique and had a much better keyboard.
[3] Samsung SCH-I760
[X] Same opinions as the I previous stated for this phone
[X] E90 and Tilt had better keyboards so I didn't want the Samsung SCH-i760 as much.
[4] LG Voyager
[X] Well back then I knew very little about phones, and I was very uneducated about phones. Instead of checking out places like infosync, I relied on yahoo answers for the question "what is the best phone with a qwerty keyboard" ... I kept on getting answers that the LG Voyager was the best. Even CNET said it was the best. But after a lot of research I place this at the bottom of my list.
[D] Other Facts
[1] I actually bought the Samsung SCH-i760. The reason being that I really like the design, and I know that this phone is so underrated. So after I received the phone, I am way more satisfied than ever. You want to know why? The Samsung SCH-i760 speakers are 100% as loud as the N95. The sound quality isn't as clear, but it is still pretty good. In fact, the bass is pretty good as well. I didn't even know that! Nobody ever told me or said online that the speakers of this phone were as good as the N95. Because of that, I use this phone as an alarm clock and an hourly announcer for the time. [I save battery on my X1].
[2] I plan on getting my own Nokia E90 because gosh the keyboard is so good.

I did look at all sorts of phones:
Nokia N97
Samsung Omnia
HTC Touch Pro
02 XDA (whichever the latest one is)
Tocca Ultra
B) What was the primary phone that you used prior to this?
Nokia E90
Awesome keyboard, good build quality (built like a tank!), crap firmware that broke most of the connectivity, hence the move!
C) What were your top alternative candidates for the phone prior to the Xperia X1? (in order of importance)(including reasons why)
Mostly Nokias to be honest:
I had an N80IE (pretty good phone to be honest) prior.
I always wanted a communicator as I'm a bit of a "top spec/flagship model" geek at heart, and the E90 was good to hold, if a little big, but the keyboard made up for that.
I didn't have any prerequisites really, but I did fancy a qwerty keyboard, and Blackberry ones aren't good for big thumbs...
D) Do you have any facts that you would like to share about yourself (must involve phones)?

iPhone 3G - was a nice phone and would of gotton it if it wasnt out of stock and since it never did come back in stock i started actually looking at other possible phones like the xperia/
I think it was the T-Mobile G1 - i didnt do much research into buying this phone except watch the sony ericsson videos and such from xperia.com, liked the G1 because of the keyboard but it didnt look as nice.
B) What was the primary phone that you used prior to this?
K610i - finally got a proper actually nice and good phone although the battery life on the k610i was literally amazing, i used to go weeks with out having to charge it.
C) What were your top alternative candidates for the phone prior to the Xperia X1? (in order of importance)(including reasons why)
Errm, think it was mainly Sony Ericsson phone because i really liked the K610i. Well to be honest i just got my Dads old phones because he was on a proper contract and i wasnt and he always got free upgrade so i always just took the old ones
D) Do you have any facts that you would like to share about yourself (must involve phones)?
Xperia has broken too many times and casue me more than enough trouble for one life time.
I once made a tut on xperia-x1.net on how to use my old K610i battery inside the xperia by putting in some card at the side - it was pretty cool as a spare battery alternative but i think it was a little too large for the case to fit on.
When the iPhone 3G was release i rushed to the shops only to find it compleatly sold out - eventually i came to sense and started to consider other phones but i spent so long waiting for the Xperia to actually be released.

I had read and checked almost any article/vid/review of the upcoming pocket pc/smartphones at that time. I needed to change my N95. I was hesitating between these:
3 - Samsung Omnia.
It is a dumbed down Xperia without a keyboard. I did like the design a lot at that time (not so much now). The specs were great, but I will never again by a touchscreen only device (after the craptastic Touch HD).
2 - Nokia N97
There was a long time to wait for the N97 to come out, but having used the N95 for so long I was willing to wait. I had doubts about Nokia making a touchscreen phone. I don't want to be a better tester and then a better device to come after that.
The pathetic processor and the same old Symbian is what put me off.
1 - HTC Touch Pro
What can I say? Great keyboard, great specs, kinda ugly design but function over form ftw . A device that you can do anything with and can be certain that the job would get done. I hesitated between this and the X1 for months. I know that I have made the right decision now .
B) What was the primary phone that you used prior to this?
I used 2 phones actually:
1 - Nokia N95
Best device int he world for a long time. Media monster, unparalleled speakers and great functionality.
2 - HTC Touch HD. (worst phone in the world)

The same as the answers for the first question. I have been interested in PCs, UMPCs, PDAs, Phones etc. for many years, but I am ashamed to admit that I did not know about the Xperia for some time after it was announced.
D) Do you have any facts that you would like to share about yourself (must involve phones)?
Um.......
I have been a fan of smartphones and PDAs for years and haven't used many "dumb" phones. I never liked Nokia (still don't), but used to buy their devices for their great quality. No matter what you prefer, Nokia is the best in the market. You may bash them or whatever, but when you make a decision for a device that will help you daily, you must be objective.
I have had many Nokia devices, but I liked only 2 of them. Nokia N95 and the Nokia N93.
I also had a razr (and I still love it).

HTC Touch Pro
-nice keyboard but smaller screen, lacks 3.5mm jack.
Samsung Innov8
-rich in features but once i got hold of it and held it in my palm it was a no-no.
too large for my liking. and looks boring...
Samsung Omnia
-doesnt look as cool as the X1, smaller res, lack 3.5mm jack. and once my brother got one it was out!
Sony Ericsson W960i
-almost got one. would hv been an impulsive decision cos i was really bored of my k810 and didnt want to wait any longer for the x1.
B) What was the primary phone that you used prior to this?
Sony Ericsson K810i. good camera. thats all.
served its time well. but i wanted more from a phone....

N82. awesome specs but at the time the price was a little steep and i was a poor student.
so i settled for the cheaper alternative.
[D] Other Facts
really hope theres an awesome wm6.5 phone by q4 this yr to replace my X1.
maybe HTC Firestone or X2??
i want to stick to wm cos i like customizing and modding my phone.

After you have your new Touch Dual and played it for awhile, what do you think?

In the last year or less I've owned a S710, Tytn, Touch (elf), tytn2, S730 and now Dual (nike).
I've given up on smartphones, the 730 was a mistake I had it 1 day and just couldn't cope without the full PPC interface. The tytn2 was very good, but for me was just too heavy and bulky, I loved the Touch (elf) but it was not 3G and was slow for me. So the Dual does a very good job for me. I dont need the wireless as I never used it on any of the phones I had. Its quick and looks good. Overall happy so far..... but then the Cruise is out next, so you never know (although it looks a bit ugly!)

I like it.
But it is not a 5 for me, just a 4,75, because i miss wifi. Since i got a T-mobile Hotspot flatrate, i am sad, not being able to use it with my Touch Dual. I can use it with my Communicator, but the Nokia is quite bulky and i love the size of the Dual.
I know, i cannot have everything i want; actually i would have stayed with the Communicator, if it would have had UMTS; but this way i end up to have two smartphones, two worlds and each of them missing a feature, the other one offers.
And i also wanted to give a shot at Windows mobile...
So to make a short story long:
Pros:
- Display
- Ease of use (keys & touchpad)
. quite fast
- customisable
- might support 16 GB micro SD card.
- no prob with connecting to my car's bluetooth; first try, and it worked. The Nokia is a real pita, since it seems to loose the connection to the car every two or three weeks or so and it takes several tries to pair them.
Cons:
- no wifi (this really bother me, but if the device is able to do it, i would pay for upgrading it)
- no gps (this doesn't bother me at all, but if the device is able to do it, it should be upgradeable to enable it)
- I'd like to have a real carrying case not just this kind of sock....
- They should give you a micro SD card (i have an unbranded, unlocked HTC phone)
Perhaps there are some more issues later, but as of today i like it.
The other options include the Cruise, but it doesn't have a hardware keypad and the heralds/kaisers are too bulky...

i think they left out gps and wifi for marketing reasons. there is surely space for at least one antenna. the wizard had a telescopic stylus and that wasn't so bad. and there is space underneath the battery if they wouldn't be using such a bulky battery cover.
but who would take a polaris or a kaiser??

I've had mine for a bit over 2 weeks now. Very happy with it. No wifi is not a big deal for me since I find it quite difficult to locate free hotspots anyway. Besides 3G is not too expensive in my area. The only thing that can be done better would be to make the screen more sensitive a-la the iPhone/iPod Touch. I find I have to use a considerable amount of pressure to fingerscroll on the Touch Dual.

I'm going to try to compare it to the S730 and TyTN II (should be interesting to see which wins...)

I would compare it to the TyTN II but not the S730... I don't think it's just to compare a PPC with a Smartphone... the PPC will always win

Not convinced by that- there S730 has some very worthy attributes

I got a Dual and a Tytn II at the same time and am trying to make up my mind which of them remains and which one gets sold... I decided to give each a week. The Dual had it's week and now it's the Tytn II. I must say it took me a day or two to get used to the Dual (had a Trinity before) but I liked it better with every day. Now it's the Tytn II turn and I kind of miss the Dual. Much nicer and better feel. I only wish it had GPS enabled somehow and that would have nailed the decision for me. It's a close tie as it is right now (day 3 with the Tytn II).
With the Dual, I switched the camera button into "OK" button which I missed alot. Other than that - I got used to the sparse hard key layout (or lack of).
Get me that GPS working!!!

Summary?
I'm close to being in love.

I really hope there is a OK button on the keyboard. That should be standard for all PPC! The location of charging port is really annoying! I like it to be placed at bottom. However, memory card slot is brilliant idea. Wat a split character the designer is!

torn between X1, OMNIA and Touch Pro

X1 is definitely going to be released in October in my country; but I'm still undecided about which one of them I will buy, here are what I like and dislike/less like with each one of them
X1
+ the best hardware design of the 3, I like the curved slide, I like those LEDs, I like the 3.5mm jack, I like the memory slot and finally I like that it is the most packed with hardware buttons than 'virtual buttons' found in the others.
+ the screen size/res
+ best video recording
+/- 384 final RAM which is still yet to be seen about the performance
+/- I like the panels, but IMO in their current condition they feel somewhat raw and lack of polish; the poker style stacked panels are useless and a waste of resources they should have been created something more functional for example like windows XP's filmstrip folder viewing style in which we could be able to switch between panels without having to press the panels button -which feel like unnecessary 'back' button-
- and with my previous point they should have add an accelerometer, so that other than finger swiping between panels (ala touch flo) perhaps we should be able to shake the X1 to switch between panels. (oh come on SE, even W910 had this, why not your flagship?)
- I'm not convinced as to whether SE has done a good job in reshaping the default WinMo UI or not, in fact based on previews, I didn't see anything has been done to it, they (SE) just babbling over and over and over about the panels
- I'm also worried about the pre-installed software, there are no info about anything else than Opera and handago client (which are quite useless in my country due to slow, somewhat unstable and rather expensive 3G cost) that will come with the phone, and it caught my eye that they integrated contacts in multimedia panels! Isn't it weird?
- rather small onboard storage

+ Touch Flo 3D, IMO the only solution capable of rivaling Iphone's multitouch UI now in WinMo

Omnia
+ sleek design
+ hapstick mode, anything full touch screen capable phone should have this feature, how come those phone makers designers didn't think about it
+ 5MP camera with face detection, smiley detection, geo tagging support out of the box
+ a quite good UI, including the reshaped default WinMo UI, it may not as appealing as Touch Flo 3D, but it is at least functioning well
+ 16GB storage + expansion, holy ****, this set the standard for the industry!
+/- largest display size between the 3, I've seen people bashing it res, but my experience with SE P900 was that the res are OKAY, in fact I can browse quite comfortably with my SE M600i which is smaller in size and display res compared to P900 *edit* I checked and realized that I was wrong about the display res in P900 compared to M600i, the M600i is more pixels packed, but still of course way behind X1, but my point is that those res aren't that bad like what many have criticized it.
- no physical keyboard
- no STYLUS slot lol, unless they have a screen with minimum 5 inch in diagonal never forget stylus!
- the display is said to be somewhat poor under sunlight
- only 128MB RAM
- somewhat just an average optical mouse/joystick pad with no d-pad capable like in X1
any suggestion? comments? I would like to hear things from those who have experience with TP and Omnia.

You first must know, what you want to do with. Then the first decisionis with or without hardware keyboard.
I wouldn't do again without. In each software you have to make inputs like writing webadresses, logins or equal you loose a lot of the screen, if you don't have an hardware keyboard. For this reason, I would not do without.
If you don't need a keyboard compare the omnia with the new HTC touch hd. This has a bigger (3,8") and more powerfull (WVGA) screen.
With the omnia samsung went only the half way -the low resolution is not the future... But it is faster in some feelings, as WVGA. If you once had a VGA/WVGA, you will not do without any more. This is the opinion of ALL the people I know, who changed from QVGA to VGA or WVGA.
The touch pro may be not so bad, but for me the display is much too small. I am used to WVGA since a good year now and do not want to miss. The 160 Pixel more length are more than much usefull - I recognize it every day. Even 3" WVGA is a bit smaller than 2,8" VGA you feel the difference clearly.
For that reason the X1 is the only device on the market, I could buy. Never Toshiba again, because they have absolutely no custom service.

Or you could wait for the HTC HD Pro - the HD with a keyboard

probably will be too long to wait, and I haven't hear about HTC make that?

Nothing like that announced so far...
But knowing HTC they'll make it just to screw with me

If they were to suddenly announce a HD Pro, my Touch Pro might not be in once piece.

I don't guess HTC will make a touch HD Pro -to big, to heavy for their customers. But if they do so, I would think of buying it, even after having bought the X1. You know:

Omnia comes with an awesome camera... but the most disappointing thing is its stylus and no slot to put it in. But it definitely has no comparison with Touch Pro and Xperia - not just 'cos of no keyboard, but because it lacks the power that those two sets carry - way too low RAM in comparison to them.
Furthermore, Omnia is limited to 16 GB Maximum. Both Touch Pro and Xperia can be expanded upto a whooping 32 GB - and not to mention since it is Micro SD, you can swap cards, put it easily in a card-reader and use as needed and so on.
Samsung Omnia is an extremely impressive set, but it definitely fails to impress when you bring in Touch Pro and Xperia into the ring. So... don't even consider that.

Touch HD is going to be the iPhone killer - full touch screen with improved touch sensitivity than Touch Pro and probably carrying far more features than the Touch Pro. The screen of the Touch HD goes head on with Xperia, but it leaves Xperia behind when it comes to the Camera as it has a 5 MP camera on its back.
So the question is... Do you want a keyboard on your device? If the answer is not necessary, then you should do be thinking Touch HD VS Xperia otherwise stick with Touch Pro VS Xperia.

There is no such thing as an "iPhone Killer". I don't know how often I have read "XYZ phone, the next iPhone Killer?" - and the answer is always "no".
It's not because the iPhone is so much better then other phones, it's because it has a superb marketing and some stylish gadgets included while Windows Mobile devices don't.
It's the same for iPod. There are for sure other good MP3 players out there, but everyone knows iPod.
So please let's stay away from this in this Xperia thread, because the iPhone got already killed as far as I'm concerned.

Actually i didn't mean it like that. Sorry for making it sound so. By 'iPhone Killer' i tend to imply a phone that can be considered comparable to the iPhone... one that gives the user a choice.
I have an iPhone and have been using it since over an year now, and i can pretty much say that it definitely will stand its ground in the market - well maybe its sales will reduce and all, but it'll stay.

The Touch Pro has a weak 3G reception. I still wonder why this problem is never mentioned in such comparisons. Unfortunately we do not have enough information concerning the Xperia and reception quality, but it should be something well considered.
What is a 3,8'' Touchscreen worth if you have no signal to display the required information on it?
As far as I'm concerned, one of the basic features regarding a smartphone is still "connectivity". Weak connectivity = crappy phone.

Touch HD will be better than Touch Pro. We already have larger screen, more pixels on the camera, greater sensitivity on the touch screen... and so we can only wait an see if 3G receipt will be any better or not. But thank you for this, i've added this in the comparison above as #7...
And yep... the iPhone will definitely stay. Even i'm considering not to sell of my iPhone and keep it as an iPod Touch or backup phone with tons of games loaded on it...

please research again, OMNIA is equipped with onboard 16GB storage, and can still use micro SD....
and by the way, I don't compare the touch hd here, so which one of X1, TP and Omnia that would be the best buy?

Ahhh! yes. thank you for correcting me. Samsung Omnia can definitely be carry a Micro SD card, but at the max of 16 GB. So at max it can have 32 GB (considering you have the 16 GB set)

Despite Omnia allowing up to 32 GB memory in total, it still falls behind Xperia and Touch Pro. I might however do a comparison - according to my understanding - between Omnia and Xperia later today or tomorrow.

Don't know why the omnia is being dismissed - it has the most powerful processor and I'm not sure the Ram is an issue because of the internal memory has speeded up to the same level. What I would question about HTC and the Sony is the build quality as both of them are in fact out of Htc's factory

Xperia versus N97

You heard it folks. The next BIG thing out there should be the N97. Let's make an early discussion about it and how it compares to the x1. I found this little comparison of the two:

I do not agree with the first statemnet... N97 won't offer anything special over the current symbian devices other than possible high-resolution video recording capabilities. The real challenge would be Xperia Vs. Palm Pre!
I now own an iPhone 2G and an Xperia. When a better looking Google Phone hits the market, i'm going to go after that as well - or maybe if i find a cheaper G1 on sale then that. And in the future... Palm Pre of course!
Anyways... any Microsoft Devices comparisons with other devices should be put on hold. Microsoft is announcing 6.5... lets see what they offer in that - i don't care much about the beta or leaked images and videos out there, but am more waiting for the final version or Microsoft's official screenshots etc.

Well I've had Nokia's for the past 4 years and know how it works, now that I purchased an X1a. Man I gotta tell you there's so many retrictions for Symbian users, WinMo is the clear winner over Symbian. Its week 2 for my 1st WinMo device and I still have a lot to learn, so many possibilities with WinMo and on other forums like HoFo, all they can say is WinMo sucks because its too complicatied. Everytime I see that I think to myself too complicated for their caveman brain(me make call, me no use WinMo).

I understand exactly what you mean, but I'm not as prepared as you are to jump on the bandwagon.
Yesterday, for example, I popped my SIM in an E71-2 just because I was going to have a fairly active schedule and simply did not want the bulkier Xperia bouncing around and clicking its buttons when it accidentally took itself off hibernation while in my pocket.
And comparing the Xperia and the E71 next to each other, I come away with the feeling that the Xperia asks for too much attention in its operations and management. I keep thinking, "fiddly" as an adjective to describe the combination of Xperia and Windows Mobile.
It might appear to a potential power user that Symbian is not as customisable as Windows Mobile...but IMHO that is because it doesn't need to be. It's already customised to what a power user [sic] would want.

I confess that it's entirely possible that I'm getting used to the Xperia, which is my first touch screen device. It's not my first Windows Mobile device, however, and I was delighted with how easy it was to modify the Symbian phone and find programmes for it when compared to my previous device, a Q9h Global on WinMo 6.1.
Having said all that, I understand why somebody would have posted a thread asking about a comparison of the N97 vs the Xperia, because I've found myself wondering exactly the same thing. I think that the majority of users who really have to use and rely on their devices really might be tempted by the N97 simply because it provides the power of a good, solid PDA design with the inherent easy usability of Symbian.
But even if you buy into the Symbian idea, you will notice things about the Xperia that might cause you to hang onto the Xperia instead of running for the N97 when it first shows up. It's pretty clear, for example, that the Xperia's screen will be superior to the N97's, despite the better colour depth of the N97 screen.
I think we're going to have to hold the N97 and see it next to our Xperias before we could say for a definite certainty that we'd prefer one to the other.

I had Symbian too. UIQ3 (SE) and S60(Nokia).
Symbian is optimized for a limited set of tasks. The one that the manufacturer think it's good for their users. Well, some users(like me) found that the manufacturer didn't optimised the device for them. I would like more. Now i have WinMo and i'm satisfied with it. I would like to try Linux either.
With WinMo you're limited by hardware only. There are a lot of software developers and a lot of possibilities due to the platform, that you can customize the way you want

i have had 3 symbian phones (2 uiq), 2 from sony and one from panasonic. i changed my w960i (uiq) for the x1. i have found the wm6.1 to be better than symbian but symbian is very good if u need a standard phone with some extra stuff (office/emails etc) but its very hard to add or change the phone to suit your needs. all that being said i think the n97 will be a very good phone but is based at a different area to the x1.
this is how i see it:
Normal phones - standard phones, nice camera
Android / Iphone / N97 - Style phones, looks nice, easy to use, extra apps
WM / Blackberry - Business phones, very adaptable(WM)

Well in my opinion why even bother to compare them as your trying to compare wm against symbian.. well n97 looks and is really great but the OS is making it less attractive as xperia has wm os.. well the os of n97 is restricted as there only will be firmware updates and no upgrades of the rom it self as wm 6.1 > wm 6.5 wm 7 ... symbian os 9.4 is restricted to it self... (i'm a symbian moderator at another forum but i do see this comparing as neutral and bringing forward the facts.. )

Well ive had a N96 symbian and one thing is for sure
the phone suite app works easyer and faster then that idiotic active sync bull that microsoft put on the market.
Meanwhile that symbian needs a certtificate to get any illegal or legal software on the phone is frustrating at least
But that nokia bought and now ownes symbyan and that its impossible to get any software on their phones without a certificate made me return to windows mobile
In short nokia is more stable better in their software and just makes exelent phones and frankly is more popular
(See it as mercedes... you can buy an audi with all the trimmings that even drives better but it still wont keep its value like a merc.)
sony's xperia once you have one and you take that awfull active sync for granted it will blow the nokia out of the water

I currently have a nokia n95 and i hate it. Worst phone ive ever bought.
GPS is crap.
5mp camera = 5mp of blur.
The battery lasts 4 hours on standby before it dies.
Sound quality in phone calls is terrible.
I've had to reflash the firmware at least 4 times due to it bugging out.
The phone randomly switches itself off every now and then.
Build quality is rubbish the + volume button doesnt work and has caved in.
Can't wait to get my xperia this month

Do you regret the X1?

I've been wanting and waiting to buy the xperia since it was released. I'm finally just about to buy it (had one ordered but the order fell through on their end, and so now have time to reconsider). I'm a programmer and very technically-minded, so I am not anticipating having any technical problems with optimizing/dealing with the phone. I'm looking for something powerful (and beautiful) that I can customize and use fully for a while.
However, I see many posts here about people regretting purchasing the xperia, mostly because of sluggish performance (and case cracks). When I go to the local Sony store to play with the display phone they have, I can definitely see that I would be very unhappy with a stock set, it's too unresponsive for me, plus the finger-friendly issues with win6.1. I know all about the different speed tweaks and touchscreen response tweaks available here for the xperia, but it's hard to get a feeling for just how well they work and how much a difference they really make.
But since I'm a regular xda reader, etc, I have hopes that some of the nice roms posted here will improve the system responsiveness, I'm especially looking at gtrab's set, mobilevu's v-lite and wild child's concept rom.
My question is: even if you continue to stick with the phone, do you actually regret getting the xperia?
I've been waiting for a long time for a real killer phone and while the xperia looks like it for me, I don't want to be disappointed even with custom roms... the hero looks like an option to me if the xperia isn't going to live up to my hopes.

Absolutely I regret it. At the time I had just drowned a k850i, and bought another k850i to replace it. Then I saw a decent deal on an X1a, and I went for it. For the money, this phone just isn't worth it. I was happier with my SE dumb phones. I'm waiting for the Idou or whatever they're calling it now. This is after spending months waiting for the c905a...

Yes, I regret getting the Xperia X1.
I've had an XDA of one sort or another for the last 4-5 years so I'm used to WinMo and it isn't the OS that's the problem. My perception is that it is too fragile for day-to-day use. My sig says changed twice due to cracks in the casing... make that three times as of today!
It is only the fantastic ROMs from the talented chefs here at XDAdev that make it bearable. Most of the ROMs have Rhodium enhancements, and since I really like those enhancements, I'll be looking at a Rhodium next time around.

Nope because I get every dollar (even with the discount) out of my purchase. I use ALL of the features on a daily basis lol.

I do not regret buying an X1. But, buyer beware, it is not perfect out of the box.
My fun was getting it perfect for my preferences. I enjoy having the option to dig in and customize my device with various software or settings tweaks.
It is a well made device and the R3 rom which was finally released for NAM yesterday has improved my reception as well as speed and smoothness running different programs.
I have also flashed it multiple times with custom roms from the chefs here at XDA.
While the price for it was, and still is, ridiculous, I am happy with the phone overall.
I would love to see a winmo 6.5 upgrade for it in the future but realistically, I don't expect it.
I have had mine for around four months, have no cracks in the case and protect my screen with a Martin Fields protector. I use a ICE-45 OEM case.
I would recommend this phone as long as you have disposable income.
It doesn't matter what you buy, in six to twelve months something better will be available. That can be said for all high tech devices.

i do regret it, i've been using sony ericsson for 3 years and lots phones: k800> k608> M600> W880> K850 > W960 >xperia1
somehow Xperia1 is not perfect to me
- camera isnot better even than k800/k850/w960
- music player is definitely worsen/ not friendly than k850/w960- this 2 phones were amazing at its onw strengths- camera/music
- xperia speed is somehow slow/ often hang
that all i want SE to improve and put effort on X2/3 which should have combination of k850 camera/ w960 music and speed. if they do it, their phone would be perfect all aspects

If you are not too concern about the lack of response, I would say its one of the better WM phone..
If you are not too concern about phone hanging once in a while, I would say its one of the better WM phone
If you are not too concern about the music quality, I would say its still one of the better WM phone
If you are not too concern about Window Mobile OS, I would say go get the X1
Do your research on the X1 and compare features before you decide..
For me, yes, I regret it and it has such a low resell value that I am stuck with it for a while now

I regret getting the Xperia...
The Primary Reasons (In Priorities Order) That I Got Xperia:
1) Optical Mouse - All of the reviewers on the internet kept referring the D-pad as an Optical Mouse. I didn't want an Optical Joystick, I wanted a Mouse. Furthermore the effing reviewers rarely mentioned that the D-pad was horrible.
2) The keyboard - Everyone raved that the keyboard was amazing, so I thought that I'd enjoyed it. But I think even the HTC Touch Pro 1 has a better keyboard. Why? We all know the front D-pad on TP1 and X1 sucks so much. But atleast Touch Pro 1 is designed for text functionality and has a keyboard D-pad which Xperia lacks. I was at first content with the lack of keyboard arrows because I expected the optical mouse and D-pad to work flawlessly. The Xperia does not have good indicators for Capitalization or blue FN keys. You have to look at the screen and it is hard to tell compared to looking and typing simultaneously on the keyboard. I always capitalize or insert symbols/numbers unexpectedly. The number keys are hid behind the text and I have never used a keyboard on a phone before so I thought it was a smart move with the Xperia. But it's just totally not effective.
Furthermore I rarely use the front D-pad in portrait mode because that is when my stylus is out, and I learned that it is most useful to use it when you are in keyboard mode, except the optical mouse is hard to use and I want keyboard-like arrow buttons.
3) I never had a depressed screen before - I learned that I would rather have scratches on my phone than have a depressed screen. I remember on a few forums that I praised the X1 for having the "usefulness" of a depressed screen, and now I apologize and join the other side of the argument.
4) I thought the screen was big. I was wrong, I've never had any phone with 3 inch screens before and I thought that 3 inch was big. This is why I do not install Touch Flo roms on this phone because Touch Flo owns on a 3.5+ inch screen, but is pointless in a <3.0 inch screen
5) I expected the front face keys to be easy to press and enjoyable. Boy was I wrong.
6) I thought the chrome was metal chrome as well. I was wrong again. It is chipping off already and the D-pad is also chipping off is glossy paint. But I have to admit it that peeling that paint off makes the D-pad looks much more high quality at the cost of losing the shininess.
7) I thought that the silver battery cover was scratch less and easy to remove from the back. It took me 3 months to perfect the art of battery cover removal.
8) The CPU is slow, but I think there is something wrong with my Xperia. I have a Samsung SCH-I760 in which Pocket Player and Core Player is twice as fast as the Xperia X1 with optimized settings.
The only thing that is preventing my from selling my Xperia is the fact that I love the gorgeous R3A Media Panel and its interface and the 3.5 mm headphone jack and the Flash LED.

What none of the replies are saying is that it depends quite a lot on where you live and mostly work.
Why ? Because the X1 has a truly terrible GMS signal reception in marginal areas, irrespective of which radio ROM you have installed. I've tested this side by side with an HTC P3650 and an Acer DX900, using the same SIM in each device, directly after one another. The X1 works fine in the cities, hopeless in marginal areas.
Also the 3G UMTS (internet) capability is limited to 1900/2100Mhz in the X1. If you need UMTS 850Mhz in regional areas, try for an X1a.
The original battery is underpowered and heats dangerously with continued use of GPS or wifi while on charge.

Hmmm this is a hard one to tackle.... for me I always regret some part of the phone... maybe frustrated is the work I should use instead of regret. my phone progression has been
550 motorola flip --> Motorola TAC Elite --> Motorola QWERTY messaging phone (forgot the model) --> SE P800 --> BB 7250 & SE W900 --> BB 8830 & Nokia N95 --> BB 8830 & Nokia N85 -- BB 8830 & SE X1
the X1 marked a major change in the way I used my personal phone, primarily for e-mail and messaging, so my criteria have changed a bit. Although the N95/N85 were smart phones, i still primarily used them as phones, and not integrated messaging devices. The Blackberry was always for work, and has always primarily been a messaging device so I have drawn the baseline experience from that.
To answer your question in short: No. No serious regrets.
To answer you question in detail: Yes, I have regrets but the issues can be mitigated/X1 seemed to be the best blend of trade-offs:
1) Lack of free integrated international maps. Global data roaming costs and arm and a leg. Pay as you go in some countries don't include data, so Google Maps downloading data is a bit of a concern when i'm using the GPS abroad. This was a factor when I was deciding between the X1 or N97. I spend 9 of 12 months in home territory so i can probably manage without free international maps. (Garmin, Wayfinder don't have maps for Japan or other Asian countries that I spend time in, and you have to pay for maps unlike the free Nokia Maps app)
2) Windows Mobile quirkiness. WM 6.1 is slow. Weird things happen like accounts go missing, spontaneous reboots, lock ups, crashes, when you install different things. It's not as customizable (stock), I haven't found a voice dialler/voice synth, and the menu system is not intuitive. The messaging system is more robust however, and there is great aftermarket customization (ROMS and MODS from here), etc. I think some of these shortcommings can easily be rectified by the community, but they're still annoying. COmmunity and aftermarket support maturity ended up being a huge factor for me.
3) Form factor. It is slightly thicker than my N85, but thinner than my N95, just as wide, and only 1 cm or so taller. It is comfortable in my hand and is pocketable. The N97 is not much bigger, but the BB Bold is a lot fatter. Seemed like a good compromise.
4) Battery Life. Horrid. I could get 3-4 days normal use with my N85. I use 30% of the battery on a low usage day, and 50-60% on a moderate usage day. Mind you I use the data a lot more, which does suck up more battery, but I should get more than a day's charge out of it IMO. I'm going to chalk this up to my use of data, and hope that there is a future radio/rom upgrade that is easier on battery usage.
5) Functionality as a messaging device. I IM, e-mail, and SMS much more than I call. probably 8-to-1. I do find myself resorting back to my BB8830 for heavy IM usage sessions, possibly because I am more familiar with it, but realistically because I'm much more used to the keyboard. Heavily considered the BB Bold for this reason alone. Maybe things will change after a month or two getting used to the X1. The N97 which I also considered had serious issues as being a robust messaging device. It seemed adequate, and may have improved with further firmware releases/development, but S60 5th Edition seemed limited in more ways somehow.
6) Recessed screen. Pain in the ass. Not a deal breaker tho since I have thin fingers and am pretty dexterous. I can understand why this would be a larger issue for other people however. Definitely a poor design choice.
7) Volume. This is a quiet device. I'll have to amplify and re-jig all my custom call tones, and what not. Annoying, but manageable.
8) Poor camera. I'm used to a really good quality 5 MP Carl Zeiss lense that was on the N85. I didn't use it much but it was a nice thing to have as a backup. I feel a bit stifled by the camera on the X1, but since I'm not really using it that much, it becomes a lower weighted criteria.
So as you can see, for me, it was not a simple choice between a BB Bold, SE X1, Nokia N97, or waiting for the new Samsung B7610, HTC Touch 2, SE X2, or some other next gen device. Lots of factors, and yes I do have regrets around a lot of them, but you do the best you can and just move on.
I've found with some tweaking the X1 usable/tolerable, and meeting 80% of my needs. Nothing will ever be perfect, and if I follow the 80/20 rule, meeting 80% of my requirements for a decent price is usually as good a deal as I can ask for.

On reflection, yes... I regret it.
I resent the implication by DatDereX1 that somehow the phone's shortcomings are down to my stupidity. If it was a simple case of software, then all of the problems would instantly be resolved by a flash of the ROM - but that isn't the case. WinMo aside, the hardware is far from perfect:
* abysmal battery life
* poor responsiveness to touch
* recessed screen
* case suceptible to cracks
* poor external speaker
* reception is poor (compared to other devices in the same location on the same network)
When you throw in the stock software, you can add to that sluggish performance and poor usability. Out-of-the-box it is quite simply a device that is well below par.
With custom ROMs the situation becomes bareable but you still can't get away from the basic hardware issues... and even with the ROMs, performance is still far from lightening quick.
Even those devoted to WinMo would surely have to conceed it is not the best implementation of the OS on a device.

I only regret I have no Xperia. I bought one for my wife and she uses it greatly. I have no money currently to spend on another one. I'm stuck for 5+ years with my old trusted Nokia 6230 (not even 6230i) phone if you remember the one.
I know definitely my next phone will be some PPC with WinMo. Maybe X2...

i do regret buying the x1, because now i want something more powerful with more features, eye candy and sexier...but u know what? i am still yet to find the device.
i really want to replace my x1 but i cant see anything to replace it with, will never buy the iphone unless it comes with fm radio, camera light or flash, mp3 for ringtones and multitasking abilities...so im kinda stuck with my x1, lets hope the x2 is much sexier, or else i would be buying a future htc android device with sense ui
i have two problems with the x1 so far
1. the battery loses its paint when touched often
2. the battery life is worse than my p1i ...thing is that i did more on my p1i than i do on my x1

Not at all, I love it.
All phones have their faults, hell, I sold my E90 Communicator to get one of these.
I loved that phone too, but Nokia's support of it was abysmal (it took them over a year to release a firmware fix for the Bluetooth issue that they broke with a firmware release...) and it got to the point where it was becoming a pain to use.
With all technology, there will be problems, they are coded by humans don't forget
I'd rather have 'quirks' or little niggles that can be sorted with small apps or tweaks than to have a featureless brick any day of the week.
Plus, it gives me a chance to satisfy my *need* to play with the newest toys!

I love my Xperia.

If you are unsure about a product read more about it. If you regret buying an Xperia (especially since you are at XDA-dev) it's your own damn fault.

I don't know why so many of you say that you regret buying it (even though one of you that said they regret it also said it was the best phone available).
If you are unsure about a product read more about it. If you regret buying an Xperia (especially since you are at XDA-dev) it's your own damn fault.

Thats so true.
It is just such a tiny little effort needed to put into the x1 to make it the most powerful phone of all.
Again I must stick to my phrase:
Regretting == Not being able to handle the X1

Why I am happy with my Xperia

After having read one too many "I hate my Xperia and wish I had an iPhone" thread I thought I'd make a thread for people to remember why they bought an Xperia.
Does it have it's issues? Absolutely, but it makes up for it (for me at least) in many other ways.
I originally bought the Xperia X1a because it was the ONLY 3G capable WVGA device available for AT&T bands (850Mhz and 1900Mhz). It has a nice feeling keyboard, it has a beautiful display, and it has a very nice hand-feel. Even when I pick it up now it just feels so good in the hand. In fact I haven't had one that felt so good to hold since my old SE W810i. I had the Hermes and Kaiser and both were clunky and unenjoyable to hold.
The Xperia keyboard has a very pleasant keyboard. Its clicks are well defined and the arc slider's spring assist makes it a real joy to slide out. Also my battery life has been superb. Even running 24/7 Push E-mail and a separate IMAP account I still get over 48 hours of power.
Also it came with SPB Mobile Shell for FREE. SPB is, arguably the best Windows Mobile Shell available and it was a sheer joy to use, and while the default SE Panels were rather unimpressive I love that I can switch from Titanium/Sense, to SPB, to PointUI, as well as the absolutely gorgeous Growing Panel with just two presses.
While the processor is unimpressive it has been consistently able to run AVC Video at WVGA resolutions (some ROMs worked better than others, actually).
Sony also added a pretty good Xt9 SIP keyboard (I prefer TouchPal anyway) and with custom ROMS bringing Titanium and Sense to my Xperia I wonder why I would get anything else.
Pros:
1) Very High Res screen (More than double the lowly iPhone)
2) Latest UIs (I got SPB MS 3 from Korean site )
3) Great hand-feel
4) Great 3G performance (if you are on U.S. AT&T Xperia X1a is the best, for now)
5) Long Battery life
For those of you who might say I am glossing over some of the downsides, well sure, but this is a why I am HAPPY with my Xperia thread. (I have found most of the complaints to either be largely due to user error, or what I would call "making mountains out of molehills", but that's just my opinion).
Anyone else feel like their much maligned X1 has been getting unfair treatment feel free to offer some positive feedback for the device that, hopefully, we all still love.

I am loving this phone right now.
*Opera mini feels as fast as my LEO and 3gs.
*The ability to use panels is a good point too.
*HTC Kaiser and TP2 were nice but chunky phones for me (bricks).
*The screen is just about as wide as the iphones and the device is much smaller.
*The hardware keys come in really handy. The optical sensor is good for menus.
*The keyboard is nice with good width for keys.
*Its a beautifully constructed metallic device.
* I am using vakleryire firestorm leo with htc sense activated in the home menu and it feels like a compact leo.
*No accelerometer but I use left softkey remapped to rotate screen.
* Android and Ubuntu are in deep progress as far as I can see (3 OS in one!).
Many more too.
Swap with 1ghz, increased ram/rom and the 0.2 inch for the screen and you have one of the best devices out there!

I like my X1 because it actually 'feels' like a communication device rather than an MP3 player with a call function. I honestly think the iphone looks and feels really dopey. I also have to agree that it feels great in the hands too. The way the keyboard springs open is just incredibly badass. The weight and the metal fascia just feel so classy. The panels are fun to change up every now and then, and I think it's just cool to have windows on such a tiny device. I thought my itouch felt like I had a little computer on me at all times, but the X1 is even more so. I feel a lot more organized on the X1 than I think I would with an iphone.
I had a hard time choosing between the X1 and iphone, but in the end, I couldn't justify paying the same price for a device (3G) with far less inferior hardware specs than the X1 just because of what it is. I generally hate apple products and didn't want to give in to their supremacy by getting and iphone. Sure apple's touchscreen is awesome, but I didn't feel I needed it for a phone; that's where my itouch comes in.
I found that apple's accelerometer annoying sometimes when I'm using it in weird angles, i.e. lying down in bed. I think I'm just glad to know that my X1 would be vastly superior in outer space than an iphone. You know, space-proof, just in case.
In the end I'm glad I made my decision to get the X1 and keep my itouch for my apple needs, rather than combining everything into one device. I'll use my itouch for video, music, and games; my X1 strictly for communication and productivity.
I actually love my X1 and think that it was the best phone I could get. After learning about the potential physical short comings, I'm going to do my best to baby this phone to make it live forever. If she dies, I'll revive her.

Sony eirccson is a pretty cool guy. eh is better than teh ifone and doesn't afraid of anything...

A message to the OP; when did you purchase your X1? Was it brand new. refurbished, or used?
Anyways, if the device was increased to the scale of having a 3.5 inch screen, I would definitely have kept my device.

Absolutely agree with everything said, especially about the X1 being space proof =D
Also people complain about WM, and I have no problem with it, its perfectly logical, and if you use a rom which you like, then it runs fine. Someday you'll be able to jump ship to android. Anyways I'll always love it, its fun to fiddle around with, rather than be a boring symbian phone, where you have no control.
And wheres the fun in having a phone everyone has?

I wouldn't call the phone cracking by itself user error. It's true, the phone does have good points, but it doesn't get the basics down.
If I have to keep the phone in a safe vault for it to not crack, what use is it?
I like the optical sensor and having the ability to choose between the optical sensor and physical clicks for directional input. However, I hate the feel of the keyboard.

HD games/PS1, sigh....... I miss Call of Duty 2 but I just couldn't go back to Sh!ty 6.1
And most of all The fact that their very little people that have heard of or seen this phone where i live. Actually I'm the only that owns one I don't know anybody with this phone in Auburn,NY .
@Rydock I'm glad to see your enjoying your X1 so far.

I'm still getting use to my X2 (just got it this week) but over all the more I get use to it the more I love it.
Single greatest reason why I love my X2 is .... Keyboard! =) (I hate typing on my ipod touch, nor do my fingers allow for a smooth scroll on the screen).
My only hope is the 2 up and coming firmwares fixes the little minor issues I have.

I bought mine new on eBay from an Australian retailer selling a Telstra NextG model (it comes unlocked). Only U.S. sources I could find had significantly higher prices for the X1a. I received it in February or so I think? About 1 year old.
Why do you ask about age and status? I presume you had one and are on U.S. AT&T. Were you curious since it is so rare in U.S.?
P.S. - I would prefer a bigger, flush screen. Then again it is still the largest screened phone I have ever had. And for me the physical keyboard is a huge benefit (Had Hermes and Kaiser before so I like them side sliders).

My X1 is still my favourite phone, the modding capabilities are what does it for me.
I like the fact it's my phone, I've customised it to how I want it to work, I can't do that to any other phone I've owned.
The screen is great, it runs smoothly, i can get push email from multiple accounts no problem, I sync my contacts and calendar, vide oplayback is generally good, ther are a few files that is has problems with, but that's pretty rare.
Sound quality is great, shame abut the speaker, but I generally have it on silent and use a bluetooth headset or headphones.
It looks great, the build is solid, it's been dropped countless times now, ther are a few dents, cracks and scratches, but I expect that after the battering it's had over the last months!
I love having a QWERTY, but I wish it was more friendly for single hand use.
I've found myself using titanium over any panels, and things like the wifi router abilities, even torrents, mean i can do anything I want on it.
The X2 with a 1GHz processor would probably be my ideal phone! Just wish that looked more like the X1.

I'm happy to see that there are at least a few of us who are more than satisfied with the Xperia

It's been a year since I last used my Xperia regularly. I would like to use it more, because I really enjoy the QWERTY keyboard (it has four rows and a dedicated @ button, etc) and it's a very versatile device. There are some great ROMs out for it now as well: Sense 2.5, Windows Mobile 6.5.3, X2 and what not.
But what keeps me from going back to it is the Xperia's tiny screen, in combination with the high resolution. WVGA is mainly used on 4, 3.7 and 3.5 inch displays, and not on merely 3 inches. In fact, is there even another 3" WVGA device in the world? It looks great, sure, but everything is so petite that it hurts my eyes
I think such a small display also puts a lid on the overall user experience. If the Xperia had a 3.5" display, or even 3.2", I would have used it *a lot* more. Because as pointed out in this thread, it does have plenty of strengths.

in fact I just BOUGHT an X1 afresh!
I'm using an HTC Touch HD with customized ROM as my primary device, and still think that's the best setup for me. The only things that bugged me were the width and the absolute lack of any tactile experience.
So I shopped around ...
In fact I actually ordered a Motorola Milestone: I wanted to see if I liked Android, the reviews are enthusiastic, and it has a hardware keyboard.
Guess what: I sent it back the day it was delivered. (but that's another story)
And so I went back to Windows Mobile.
My new X1 (and in fact it is brand new) has everything that I was looking for. It sits well in your hand, and I mean as a phone it feels just right. I'm quite happy with the keyboard, and I love the rich feel of the slider. And finally: Hardware buttons hooray!
Other than that it's got pretty much everything my Touch HD has, minus the G-sensor (and I can live with that).
So I use the HD for business (because it's lightweight and discreet to carry in a jacket) and for navigation (big screen!) and the X1 for leisure. Btw, the media panel is just amazing in terms of audio output!
All in all I've fully returned to WM thanks to the X1, and I don't see myself migrating to Android, WebOS, iPhone or Symbian any time soon. Windows Phone 7 Series (or whatever it's called) is downright scary in its restrictions, so I'm glad that 6.x will still be around for power users like us.
