G1 users' opinions - G1 General

on the Toshiba TG01
So, there have been a couple of threads posted on the TG01 in the general forums. However, Im curious to know what G1 users initial impressions are.
When I first got my Dev phone, I fell in love with it. It is the most versatile phone I have ever owned (and I have owned alot). I haven't even taken a second look at alot of the newer phone that have been coming out, because I was convinced that I would keep my g1 until until it fell apart.
Once I saw, the TG01, my initial impression was that it was sexy, and powerful. I watched a 25 minute in depth review on youtube (i have attached a link below). After the review was over, I was amazed to say the least. I am really considering selling my G1, to purchase one of these when it releases. I have a couple of reservations though. Namely, the 1000 mAh battery, and the fact that I would get no support on XDA. I know there are other sites out there for WinMO devices, but none are as good as XDA.
I decided to make this thread so I can hear your initial thoughts on the TG01.

traitor..........lol

hi, I've used a few smartphones in the past.
Here are my thoughts on the Toshiba Tg01
I've used PalmOS, Windows Mobile Standard, Windows Mobile Pro and now Android.
Toshiba Tg01 is indeed a sleek device, and is fast. But remember, its still WinMo underneath it. WinMo although uses a touchscreen (pro only not standard) is not optimized to use with our fingers, but with a stylus. Sure they did some customization but like HTC, they can never turn the whole OS into finger touch friendly, even if they did most part of it, 3rd party apps will always be for stylus input. Now if you're used to stylus then why not? but if you want to use your fingers then I suggest you wait for a better device.
Here's an interesting article http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2009/02/03/toshiba-tg01-hands-on-photo-fest/img_6540/
Even they said its easy to use your fingers, I doubt that its in capacitive touchscreen, so you're stuck with stylus I guess

Wonder how much it's going to cost. Anyone going to dig very deep to get this haha

I don't plan on spending a fortune. I will sell my G1, and put about $200 to $250 on top of that. Its selling for 99 euros in UK (I read on phonedog). So paying anymore than $500 - $600 wont work for me.
There are a couple of US sites preselling it for $799.99. THAT AMAZING considering the official price hasn't been anounced yet.
As far as the stylus is concerned, im not too concerned about that. I mainly just want it for media, and some of the 3rd party apps that I like (which are finger friendly). If I get into a pinch, my ink pen has a stylus built in....I like android, but since I don't know a whole lot about modding android, im not too attached to the OS to switch back to WinMo. I really enjoyed my tilt when I had it.

It looks sexy, but I could never go back to wimo, no matter what interface you lay over it. The openness of android has seduced me. I suspect that any natural born tinkerer would struggle switching back to a closed OS.
1000mah battery.. are you serious...? With a 1ghz snapdragon to push, that thing's going to last about 10 minutes.. and we thought our G1s were bad..

That's what Im hearing (1000 MaH). It supposedly has the same talk time and standby time as the iphone. I too, have a hard time believing that. I will definately wait to see some consumer reviews on it before I drop my hard earned cash!

Fresh Air [Post your positive testimonials here!]

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time threader. I've been reading alot about the Nexus One and without going into a ****load of detail, as you all know, the forums do attract alot of negative reviews, only because, obviously, the masses of people out there who are happy with their shiny new handset are sitting back, playing with their gadget, probably laughing at the world.
My phone arrives tomorrow, so I thought it would be interesting to start a thread that everyone can post their positive, satisfied testimonials in. If this thread fails I will take that as a fail over all.
Nothing negative here, if you're happy with your new Nexus let everyone know here. Over 9,000 pages.
I think that is a very good initiative !
In a couple of hours my phone should arrive.. i'll post my first-hand thoughts !
Mine is awesome. I have none of the issues everyone is talking about. In particular, I like the battery life compared to my last htc, and how easy it was to pair to my 3 cars.
Very happy
As a mover from WinMo to the N1 I am very happy. I still have plenty of learning to do about Android and will root when I think the community has enough tools to make it really worth it, but my first impressions are that this is a good quality handset that feels good in the hand and is very responsive.
I have been using it for 10 days and wouldn't consider any of the small challenges I've had anything more than an ignorance of what Android is possible of.
I hope you have as good an experience as I have
I've been a long time iPhone (jailbroken) user and have just got into the Android scene with my Nexus One.
I must say,...I'm absolutely loving the device,..my 3GS feels dated in comparison! I'd still say the iPhone OS has more polish then the current iteration of Android 2.1, but know that won't be for too much longer.
Loving the Android community too!
Time to sell that 3GS on ebay
Very Very Happy
I would like to say that I am very happy with the phone having played about with it for the last 3 days. It is everything I expected it to be and the more apps/widgets I add the more impressed I am with it.
Being a smart/internet phone it heavily relies on a good connection. On 3g/WIFI it is easily the best phone I have used and in terms of ease of use and speed it matches the iphone.
I had to set up the APN settings after I got the phone and ever since then the connection has been fine. Please note that on GPRS the speed is not that great - which is not a fault of the phone.
It surpasses the iphone in terms of customizability and the fact that you can have a number of apps running at the same time without ANY slowing down! ON a Jail broken iphone everything bugged down due to multiple apps being used.
I only need a decent case now as it has slipped out of my hand several times due to its slick design!
Overall - very impressed, very happy, absolutely no regrets about not getting the iphone which was the only other alternative I was considering.
Great phone
I went from having a G1 since February last year over to getting the nexus last monday (ordered it a couple of hours after the press conference). All i can say is... wow!!!
Well, actually i can say some more things ;-) This piece of aluminium and glass is lightning quick. It's slim, it has the best phone-screen that i have ever seen, Android 2.1 looks extremely nice (like what they replaced the drawer with). Not having physical buttons is no problem since it have tactile feedback (takes a couple of minutes to get used to but after that you don't really reflect over it).
My friend has the IXXXXX 3gs and we have compared web loading speed. Let me just say that the NE is always faster when it comes to loading the entire page. Sometimes it is twice as fast (we tried several urls of which neither of us had visited before - they were not cached). When you flipped the G1 over to the side, it sometimes took several seconds for the image to flip with it. On the NE it is instantanious.
As for the problems you guys have had with 3g->2g and back, i can't really say i've had these issues. Where i live (Sweden) it have worked rock solid since the beginning.
There exists one issue with the screen on the NE right now, but since is the praise-thread where we are all positive, i will save that for another thread
Kind regards
Daniel
I've been a long time WinMo and Blackberry user here, and the N1 is my first Android device.
I'd have to say, I'm definitely impressed. The hardware is slick and fast, I've had absolutely no issues with the phone other people have had (except no 3g coverage when I'm at work, but life goes on). Pictures are good for a phone, everything is just nice.
Once an N1 with a hardware keyboard comes out, I'll give the current N1 to the boyfriend as he's smitten with it and -hates- hardware keyboard, whereas I have to have a device with a hardware keyboard (work-related, I send emails like a fiend).
It plays Pokemon Ruby perfectly. And...it just works.
On a positive note as well, yesterday in my office with had a Blackberry (Tour), WinMo (Imagio), WebOS (Pre), iPhone (3gs) and of course my Nexus One. iPhone, WinMo and Blackberry users were aaall jealous (especially the iPhone user). The Pre guy likes it a lot as well, but not quite smitten.

I have had nothing but good experiences with this phone, I don't even have to use the Keyboard!

Lovin' it
Again - I have absolutely no complains about the nexus at all. It is the device that I have been waiting for so long, and it does not disappoint in any way. Had it for 2 weeks now and still can't stop playing with it. Can't think of any other bit of tech where the novelty hasn't worn off after a couple of days
So I received the phone 10 hours ago, and only let it out of my hand because I had to go to the toilet and eat.
Its fantastic.
Ditto, Ditto, Ditto to all the comments.
1 week old for me, moved from a Symbian. This is much better. Sorted out the sync process for my emails and calender (from Outlook - I love the fact I don't need to connect the phone to my PC to sync, I know it may well be days before I need to turn the PC on with this phone). No manufacture issues. Lots of looks from iphone droids (incl my gf!). Loads of Apps.
Can't wait for flash, because when that arrive, there will be no beating this sweet bit of kit - oh yes, and the price, for a SIM free, £360 delivered (subject to possible VAT) is an awesome price!
I can't praise this enough! I simply see it as a HTC with a google ad/logo on it!! Nothing wrong with that in my eyes.
My Nexus One is really fun to just poke at the background of.
Well I mean it just does everything my myTouch 3G did except better, and that's really what I wanted
I use mine on the toilet! (I know; that is grody.) It is that hard to part from the phone. I'm coming from a rooted G1 that I spent a lot of time playing around with.
In comparison to the iPhone, Android + Nexus One hardware makes it far superior. Not saying the iPhone isn't a great piece of hardware in its own respect, I just think the marketing that went behind it has implanted the idea that it is the most superior phone out there. To me, the Nexus One has disproved that. I can actually have a phone with a background (live wallpapers, FTW) and not populated with a bunch of squares (widgets, FTW). I can actually view all my notifications and have quick access to them via simple swipe of the notification bar.
I use text-to-speech on this phone as I did on my G1. SayMyName is quite useful (despite some bugs on the N1, it reads the contact number not the name). On my G1, SayMyName would slow my calls down and it would ring 4-5 times before actually giving me a chance to pick up. Not so much on the N1. It is instant.
Camera takes nice pictures. Navigation works great (used it on the G1, but should be same on the N1, just faster). The screen is pretty, very pretty. Simply put, this phone is awesome!
I apologize for my ramblings; I've been getting a lot of flak from iPhone users. I hope everyone enjoys their Nexus One as much as I do.
I've used WinMo devices for the past five years or so (Since O2 XDA). Latest one was a HTC Touch Diamond.
I've been using my Nexus One now for a week and it never stops to amaze me. I thought my Touch Diamond was pretty neat, but compared to the speed and ease-of-use of Android on this blazingly fast N1... it's just awesome. And (unlike my Touch Diamond) it doesn't need soft resets three times a day....
Mine is really awesome. I have none of the issues some are talking about. In particular, I like the Speed, UI, Design, Flexability, Customizing, etc...Did I mention Fast
Got mine ~4 hours ago. After reading through these forums the past day to see what problems I might expect, the only issue I saw, but was prepared for, was one edge of the screen wasn't sealed. Turned the hairdryer on it for ~30 seconds, pressed down and the screen stuck. No dust was under the screen straight out of the plastic protector. No 3G swapping issues (T-Mobile).
Impressive piece of kit, especially coming from a Dash where some keys weren't working and sound quality had gone to crap.
Compared to my wife's MyTouch 3G, the Android keyboard is waaaay easier to get keys on the outer edge to register. It usually takes me a few tries on the wife's, but the N1 keys register on the first try.
Very happy ~4 hours in.
Had it around a week and a half now. Absolutely love it! After spending so many years with WinMo I can't describe the difference. Such a great piece of hardware too.

Advice: Nexus One over iPhone (not quite a vs. thread)

So I am looking to purchase a Nexus One sometime within the next month or so. I'm an AT&T user and currently am using the FUZE with a custom ROM and running the Eclair XDAndroid build, which obviously doesn't compare to a real android device in any way, shape, or form. I'm completely aware of the features and abilities of both the iPhone and the N1, so this isn't really a feature comparison thread. On paper I know what the N1 is capable of, and everyone I know (literally) has a freaking iPhone so I know what that is capable of in the real world with real use.
Getting to the point, since you folks have been using the N1, may I ask what you like about your N1 over the iPhone? I'm following threads and seeing people with dust complaints, tinted screens, horrifying battery life, the touch sensitive buttons at the bottom not responding... and I'm just struggling on convincing myself to spend over $530 USD on a phone that could cause me problems over spending $300 USD on an iPhone that I know performs very well and already has a ton of memory built in, but lacks everything else that I want in the N1. Are most of these issues from earlier models of the phone? Do they occur more in say the T-Mobile version over the AT&T version (or vice-versa)?
I know this probably seems like a dumb thread, but I've searched and I've heard all the comparisons for features, but I just want to hear your comparisons through actual real world experience with the device (even if you haven't use the iPhone. Oh, and I did see the CNET video of the iPhone vs N1 brawl and that definitely is helping me lean more and more towards the N1.
Any advice would be great. Just please don't turn this into a flame war, both phones are fantastic in their own ways.

they're both amazing.
the nexus one is great. features and all. but after like three months, you kinda want your iphone back.. or i do at least.
depending on the 4th Generation iPhone, i may upgrade.
for the time being though, i LOVE my nexus one..
buy it if you are having any doubts. you wont be sorry.
all those issues only apply to a select few or to people that have major ocd..i did like my iphone but i didnt love it..i love my nexus one its a really great phone..i love that i can use it to tether too my laptop, use it as BRIGHT flash light, customize it too my liking, and not having to deal with iphone.
The one thing i did miss when i went back to android from my iphone was the games..iphone games are really really nice but that feeling has gone away since now alot of the 3d games on the iphone are being made for android.
the iphone is a great phone but the UI is sooooooooooo boring..i hated that 4x4 icon page on it.i love having widgets
so to sum it all up get a nexus one......and a ipad ahah
That's kind of my worry. I don't have that kind of money to throw around every couple of months, I don't want to invest all that money and in a couple of months just be jealous of all my friends with iPhones. But it is nice to hear you love your N1, the only apple fanboy thing I'm into is their operating system, anything outside of that I'm not really a huge fan of Apple (I stuck with WinMo just because I could customize it without hassle, unlike the iPhone which is a risk to brick every time you jailbreak it and there's a firmware update)

ya i love my macbook its the best thing that ever happened to me ahah..and honestly the chance of bricking and iphone while jailbreaking is slim to none but its a pain when apple is constantly sending you updates to unjailbreak it..trust me you will not be jealous of their iphones

Awesome note with the games though, I don't play games on my phone much (sadly I'm horribly addicted to solitaire...haha) so I never really got into the games aspect, I only have one or two on my iPod Touch, most of the time I use the basic Apps which are also available on Android (twitter, facebook, shazaam, things like that). So that's a good thing to keep in mind.
I think one of my biggest worries is battery life. I don't work a job where I can charge my phone at all throughout the day, and there are times I leave at 8am and don't get home until 7pm or later, and I don't want to have to worry that my phone won't make it. My WinMo phone always ends at around 60% with standard/moderate use so I never have to worry about running home to get a charge if I get hung up after work.
idk man, by far the best phone i have ever owned so far. (may be contradicting to what i just said but i literally do not care)
features list is just BOOM!
battery is amazing for me. no dead pixels. saturated screen. bright flashlight (nexus one torch).. idk so many to list.
if you wanna buy RIGHT NOW. go for the nexus one,
but
if you can wait til July...... wait. becuase you may regret it if you dont have the money to buy the newest badass thing, like maybe the 4Gen iPhone, and new product from HTC, or anyone... really its all so hard to tell but if you can wait, i think that'd be in your best interest.
and the only thing i miss about the iphone thats slowly sucking me back in (happens about twice a year, ive owned all the iphones and sold them too haha) is the slickkkkkk UI. the LARGE community and the apps that actually work clean, and flawlessly. the iphones' transition between homescreens is definitely smooth as butter. nexus one? smooth as sand paper.. the ability to take screen shots on the iphone with ease... idk.. haha
nexus one last me a whole a day with heavy usage (texting, internet, games, music, calling) i disagree with the slick UI..iphone has a HORRIBLE UI in my opinion its too plain and transition is just as smooth..the community for android is also huge and screenshots is easy too..just shake the phone (shootme app on market)

i totally agree.. just one night i forgot to plug it in. died later that day though (didnt necessarily let it "die" i just shut it off at like 2%)
My phone is simply perfect. No issues whatsoever, apparently I am one of the lucky Nexus owners. The only thing though, I do like about the iPhone more - is the UI polish. Apple is simply great at designing things. I'm ok though, as long as I have a Desire ROM. HTC Sense is quite nice.
Youll be happy with the nexus. It is great now and stands to realize much of its latent potential if Google wants it to. If you've had an iPhone you will definitely be disappointed in the touch screen. It's possible though that Android might be able to iron out some of the jittery, jumpiness of the nexus touch screen. But its a decent screen, those who have never used an iPhone think the nexus has the best touch screen there is so its definitely not a deal breaker.
Also, the nexus has higher resolution but I don't think there's and denying that the iPhone just looks crisper, especially the browser. But the nexus gpu definitely loads pages faster. I think I'm just rambling now...

It all comes down to your personal preference. You can read all types of reviews and you'll see that Nexus One wins over iPhone 3GS. The features of the phone are outstanding. Just ask yourself what you want in your phone. If you want lots of applications, music, go for iPhone but if you want free applications, customizations, widgets, great camera, blazing fast web experience, go for Nexus One. Its just a matter of time before android applications touch the mark set by iPhone. Once you root your Nexus One, its going to be a whole world of possibilities....
For the issues you read about Nexus One, I want to tell you that the tinted screen is only present in the newer devices which would be very soon fixed by an update. The capacitive buttons work perfectly when pressed on the upper half of the button. The dust problem is present in a very small no. or hardwares and if you live in US, then you can call for a replacement if it happens with you.
Android would very soon be taken up by most of the mobile makers as its open sourced and free. I read somewhere that the phone companies who have taken up android OS have to pay very little in comparison to Windows Mobile.
So go for Nexus One, you wont be sorry....
Here's what I wrote in another forum regarding this question:
Having thought about it I realised that the choice to go for an N1 is easy if it fits your needs. Since it has been released all the focus has been on how it compares to the iphone. Understandable as apple set a high bar with many features such as the apps, the graphical physics and ease of use. The n1 more or less matches them and comparing many of these features doesn't get you far. They both are fantastic bits of hardware, great screens, amazing computing power, touchscreens etc. In some ways the N1 performs a bit better in others the iphone but the differences between them are small.
However I think the N1 has gone to a new level with features the iphone simply hasn't got. I don't have to open an app to access the information I want. My calender, agenda, weather, news, daily Bible reading, personal photo's, music player (and playlists) one touch dialling to favourite contacts (and many other thing I don't use) all run on my home pages. And here's where it moves mobile information on; all these widgets update automatically and wirelessly. I don't have to plug my phone into my computer to update my agenda, it happen without hassle right onto my homescreen. Furthermore these services are free - and yes I did pay for mobile me and no its not worth it.
Bottom line is that both the iphone and the N1 are great bits of kit, you won't notice many gains in function between either hardware as far as I can tell but the software has moved on from simply apps. Unfortunately the press just focus on the things that you can compare but the how can you compare widget on a N1 to nothing on the iphone? The N1 is in a different class to the iphone because it does things the iphone can't dream of doing, try to keep up apple!
Thank You everybody. Your advice has been helpful. I actually feel that the Android UI is nicer than the iPhone, to me the iPhone seems plain. Though I will admit that the iPhone is probably a little more user friendly, I don't mind the extra clicks on Android, and it's not like it's difficult to figure out by any stretch of the means. And it's good to know that the issues people are having are only occurring in a small percentage of devices, I was really worried that I would throw down that kind of money and have a jacked phone that only lasted me half a day and had a dusty mis-tinted screen...haha. Hopefully I'll be able to get my N1 ordered by the end of this month.
The next step would be rooting. I don't think I'll root it until after the warranty is up, but I don't know, I said the same thing about ROMing my FUZE and that didn't happen. Though on an unrelated question, how come so many N1 ROM threads don't have screenshots of the ROM. The ShootMe app works great, I use it on my FUZE with Eclair. It just seems like a big risk to install a ROM without knowing what you're supposed to be getting.
actually its less clicks for android lol you know with the widgets and all..with the iphone it takes four clicks to modify your brightness for android it takes one, it takes 3 clicks to turn on wifi and bluetooth on iphone and on android it takes one, it takes 4 clicks for gps on iphone and android 1, it takes 3 clicks to post something on facebook and 1 on android (same for myspace), it takes takes 2 clicks to search on iphone and none on android..you see my point lol

Warranty is 1 year, you will get hot feet by then. There should be desire screenshots around. CyanogenMod's UI is identical to stock, extra features being the selling point.

Are you running on the HTC Li-Ion battery or some new U-235 battery?
The Nexus One is great. I don't have complaints so far other than the tiny loudspeaker. Heard that the Desire ROM gives it a louder volume. Anyway, like someone has pointed out, if you can wait until June, I would wait. I think Apple sees the Android OS as a thread so they must be building something big for the iphone 4Gen. The iphone 4Gen will probably be better the Nexus One... BUT I am confident that the Nexus Two or whatever Google wants to release in the future will take over eventually
Not saying the Nexus One will lose to the 4Gen for sure. Remember FroYo and Flash 10 are coming to the Nexus One.

[Q] What you think about Hp Pre 3 ?

Pre 3 seems great, the keyboard looks solid, screen is gorilla glass, 3.6" is way better than 3.1" curved pebble shape means it will feel great in hand and while 1250 mAH seems low this is a 2nd gen snapdragon so it does require lower power to operate.
what you think its chances of success ?

I would buy it.. but it should've come out last year
I am waiting for it. I'm currently using a Pre-, have used other phones but keep coming back to webOS
I kind of want to jump from a nexus one to a pre3; however, it needs to have T-mobile 3g. :/
i'm currently on the Evo and debating between getting the Xoom(Wi-Fi Only) or the Pre3 and the Touchpad. Just waiting for some more details

No, but i meant the phone in general, even with a decent processor from last year... The overall phone being released early last year or even in the middle it would've been good for HP.. My opinion
I just ordered an unlocked GSM Pre2 for use on AT&T (freebie, zip, zero, nada). Why? Because it's free, and because I can deal with it until something better than the Pre3 hits the market.
Even though I actually *WORK* for HP, I don't have a whole lot of faith in the Pre3's chances at success...Now, if HP can manage to get a BETTER mobile device out by Q4 '11/Q1 '12, then there may be hope.
Notably missing from Pre3: 4G (at least HSPA+ support on GSM, or some sort of LTE on other carriers). It's shameful for a new phone to launch in Summer '11, and it's NOT 4G. *EFFING SHAMEFUL*
I personally would also prefer a landscape slider, but that's only because I've never had a Palm, and have had two Touch Pros (TP1, and TP2) for the last two years. I've gotten used to the larger keyboards. If they do it, I WILL buy it. Plain and simple.
BTW - I watched the Feb 9 event. I was excited waiting for the Pre3 to blow my socks off, only to be underwhelmed. I DO really like the TouchPad, which is the one thing I wasn't expecting to get excited about. Go figure.
Honestly, I have tried a Pre...for 30 days. I liked it, but it wasn't tempting enough for me to switch from Nexus One to it. I received a Pre2 from a good friend (who got two for free), and I have used it extensively for about a month now.
However, I still use my Optimus 7 (WP7 device) for daily use, and despite all of WP7's shortcomings, I would not recommend Pre2 over a WP7 device.
Pre3 could have been a success if and only if HP delivered like Apple; Introduce the product, then release it within one month.
Of course, mobile landscape is FAR from being decided. Android's rise was surprising in 2010. WP7 might pull off something similar (now with Nokia on board as well), and you never know, HP might just sell a lot of WebOS devices. However, Pre3 is not going to be a great success. WebOS, since HP will put it in EVERYTHING, will be a success and an appealing platform for developers, but not so much when it comes to smartphones.
Hi,
I have Pre and will buy Pre 3. I had few Android phones (HTC Desire, SE X10 and Moto Milestone (Droid in US) and Windows mobile (SE X1 and TP2) and i must say that Android doesn't come nowhere near the effortless usability of WebOS out-of-the-box and with few apps.
I am using it for managing tasks, calendars, contacts and notes (private and business with Exchange) and I must say it is working without any problems. Unlike Androids, especially with Exchange. I am not a FB or Twitter user so I won't comment on that.
I don't need mega screens (I had them and I would trade it for physical keyboard any time) or black slabs since I want the phone to be pocketable. I actually really like the Pre's form factor, small and convenient. And Pre 3 will have better build quality, higher resolution, better keyboard, better screen and faster speed. It will also feature new WebOS - the OS that I like most.
I tried the WP7 and frankly, I don't want to go to old Palm OS functionality (single tasking) just for the sake of looks, which I also get tired with fast (I have been testing the Omnia 7 for two weeks and returned it back). MS can pull it off but I think that in this incarnation it is just not worth it. Beside i have the same restrictions on the marketplace as I do with Palm on both Android and WP7 (only free apps, no paid ones).
So, yes, I will buy it when the time comes. My wife already put a reservation on my Pre which she also prefers over her current SE X8.
Marijan
If Sprint sells it, I will probably buy it. I love Web OS and it's multitasking capabilities, just can't stand that small screen with no flash 10.1
I'm super excited about it. I just got a pre- to play with because my G2 won't sync with my work Exchange calendar and I need to send it off for repair. I'm so impressed by the pre- I might sell the G2 when it gets back. There's only 2 things I don't like about the pre- hardware, and pre3 addresses both those things. Processor speed is the first, which I can forgive because it's a 2009 phone. Resolution is the second, although I like the 3.1 inch size. My G2's screen looks much better because of the higher res, but I wish the phone wasn't so big and it's battery life is terrible which I think the screen is a large contributor to battery drain.
Pre3 is looking like the perfect phone for me

I hope this doesn't offend you, but you sound like a spoilt brat. 4G isn't available everywhere yet. Some countries don't have it at all. I'm sure it's very nice, but for many it's not "notably missing", it's an unnecessary (unusable even) luxury.

I just got a pre- to use while my G2 is being repaired. I agree with you that large landscape keyboards are awesome, but I wouldn't dismiss the smaller portrait keyboard if I were you. I think the pre- keyboard is just as good as the G2's. I was quite surprised actually because it looks so small. I think it's the fact that I don't have to turn my phone that makes up for it's size.
Shouldn't this be in the General section, rather than Software Development?
Had a Pre- from launch day and *loved* it. However, it kept breaking and O2 refused to repair it any longer and gave me a Galaxy S. Lovely handset but I miss WebOS. I can't wait for the Pre3 to hit the UK and I'll buy on launch day. However, they're shooting themselves in the foot be announcing it without a release date. Specs look great by today's standard, but it needs to hit soon. Maybe launch with the Touchpad and do an offer on buying both? I'd be all over that like a rash!
WebOS is SOOOO superior to Android and iOS its beyond belief. I just have little faith in HP's ability to execute!

Can't say anything about Pre3's chances of success but when it's out I'll be replacing my Pre+ with one. I've used all the major mobile OS's (except BB) and WebOS is the one that I feel most comfortable on. After using iOS and WP7 and Android I kept coming back to my Pre+. Once you've used WebOS, Android feels clunky and iOS feels like a toy. I've been using WebOS as my everyday OS for 9 months now and occasionally I switch to my HD2 (running either Android or WP7) and I just hate it! Sure Android's come a long way since I got my HTC Hero GSM, (then switched to Moto Milestone) but there's just too many keypresses involved to get stuff done! It's how I felt about Symbian S60 (used it for 5 years before switching to Android) and now WebOS makes me feel that way about Android!
The only things that have been bugging me about my Pre+ is the lack of some apps I like to use on iOS/Android and the low screen res. The Pre3 resolves my screen woes with that 3.6" 800x480 screen (which I know will make the OS even more beautiful) and the apps, well hopefully as time goes by and HP pushes WebOS onto millions of devices that will solve itself.
Another thing is the portrait keyboard, landscape keyboards just don't do it for me. The Pre keyboard is a love or hate item. I love it, and if what the early reviewers are saying about how good the Pre3 keyboard is then bring it on!
What do people here think the battery life will be like on this device?
personally I will be jumping from samsung epic to pre 3
webos is best for my usage and needs
Ive used a pre - and plussed one able to oc to 1.2. I also created over 20 patches (some of you might know who I am) so I do love WebOs. I love the elegance of WebOs but until there are real apps (really how many twitter apps do we need) Ill have to wait. The pre3 looks great but if it suffers from the slow app opening syndrome like the Pre-,+, and 2. i will definitely have to pass. Maybe by pre4 hp will get their **** together.

Any Nexus 4 owners have/had Lumia 920? Thoughts?

I currently have both. I sold my GS3 when I picked up the Lumia 920 fully knowing I was going to order a Nexus 4. My plan was to compare the 2 and decide which one I wanted to keep. I am in a bit of a struggle there. Would love input from others that Have/had both.
My opinions:
Lumia 920
Pros:
Screen - Much more vivid and bright, but not overly saturated like that of GS3 etc... Also SEEMS bigger due to on screen buttons of Nexus 4
Battery life - I wasn't even coming close to using up the battery in a day with the Lumia. WIth the Nexus I can make it through a day, but definitely not as good.
Feel - The Lumia feels very solid in your hands. The weight actually adds a good amount of feel to the phone as well, doesn't feel like a toy.
Camera - The camera on the Lumia is amazing (for a cell phone camera). Pictures are great quality and are taken with ease and fast.
OS - Windows Phone 8 is super smooth and does everything I need in a smartphone. It's newer to me, and so less boring.
Cons:
Apps - Very limited app selection. I knew this going in to WP8 and I honestly can't say it is missing anything I NEED, I guess this is more of a boredom filler thing.
No Dev - Again knew this coming in, and again a boredom filler more than anything
Nexus 4
Pros:
Dev - Not quite yet, but will have loads of custom tweaks/roms/etc to play with
App Selection - Not nearly as much as iOS but certainly more than WP8.
Call quality - I find the Nexus 4 to have AMAZING call quality (when it has a good signal)
OS - 4.2 on this phone is SUPER quick. No lag to speak of (for a change), but I do have to say I find Android kind of stale and old to me.
Cons:
Build Quality: While overall quality is great, phone feels solid, super light (debatable if that is a plus or not, I don't necessarily care for the toy feel) however the Phone has something that rattles when you shake it. Their is a constant buzz from the earpiece (can't be heard in call). The back is SUPER slippery, will slide off anything.
Signal - Overall signal is lower than the last 4-5 phones i have owned (based on signal at my house). Also when holding the phone in certain ways I can physically WATCH the signal drop down, then move my hand and watch it go back up.
Screen - Screen quality is fantastic, but the colors could use some life. I am not talking super saturated AMOLED style, but these are closer to HTC Dull IMO. The screen is just as usable in the sun test though, so it is bright!
Plenty more of each I will try to add when they come to mind, just wanted to post a few of my thoughts and see if anyone else had factors to add or their opinion (Please only post your opinion if you have had both phones to compare).
This is JUST my opinion. Please do not take my opinion on either phone as FACT or offensively. If you have a different opinion please share it (respectfully) and I am all ears. I am not posting this as a flame or to say either phone is bad or better than the other, in fact that is the decision I am stuck on. Both are AMAZING phones, so again please do not take either as a phone bash.
I'm pretty sure the rattling is the accelerometer. I don't hear the screeching at all...maybe mine is lucky.
WP8 is nice...I wouldn't judge the switch. The 920 has good build quality, too.
I don't think it's enough to pry me away from the openness of a Nexus.

Don't you care about the price?
You can buy two N4 for one N920.
The N920 Display is close to the N4. A little better than N4, but not as good as the fantastic OneX LCD2.
I'd also love to buy a Nokia again, but well.. N920.price > (N7.price + N4.price)
Edit: The rattling part with my N4 seems to be the camera-lens-system. The speaker only makes sounds when it is asked for
I've used a 920 and while it's an amazing piece of hardware, WP8 kills it for me.
I have none of the symptoms you described on your N4, no rattle, no buzzing from earpiece, or signal issues.
Overall, the determining factor will be first which ecosystem would you rather use, then which piece of hardware you want.
If WP8 is the answer to the first question then the 920 is the easiest choice, if it's Android and you aren't happy with the N4, look at the One X+, SGS 3, and Note 2.

Your basing that on? Bring me some facts and I'll gladly have a debate with you.
I strongly disagree, having actually OWNED one, as well as many iOS and Android devices. Not that I think it's better than Android, but I definitely without question find it superior to iOS (to me).

Man you really should stop using Android and buy that Nokia.
The point of Nexus 4's stock interface is for YOU to CUSTOMIZE FOR YOURSELF. If you prefer manufacturer to do that for you, you got the wrong device.
The Lumia is a flop. It's fat, overweight, and runs an OS with no apps.
I love my Nexus 4, a lot. BUT!!!!!! A friend of mine texted me about a week ago and told me he just got the lumia 920, he said its an AMAZING phone and he is blown away by it. ( he's a big android guy, matter of fact he got me to use android). Told me how the camera is amazing, the screen is insane and the fluidity is second to none. Also the predictive keyboard is excellent. THEN!!!! Today one of my coworker who is a big ISHEEP ( but a smart one lol) told me that one of his friend got the lumia and he told me the screen is just too good, he said he was super impressed by it although he said he doesn't like W8. So now I'm gonna get it as secondary phone for sure. Nexus 4 will still be my main phone.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I have both, and what I can say about the 920 is what I'd say when owning an iPhone too (swapped out a 4s for it): I can handle WP8 & iOS because they're always secondary to Android for me. Exclusively I'd struggle with either, mainly due to lack of apps in WP8, and quite a bit overall in iOS. (The app quality in WP8 isn't poor, it's just the lack of a few are killing me, ie TuneIn - that one damn Swiss station...)
As a second device for me, the Lumia has battery for days - 26h off charger with moderate use the other day and it was at 60% - is built like some concoction designed to protect a tank, and the camera is advanced. Plus it's a simple, well-designed, incredibly smooth, handsome OS which focuses on productivity. And truthfully, for times when I don't need two phones, I often want one I'm inclined to use looking at the screen less - that's the 920. More a tool to the toy, in ways, that is Android for me personally. When I got the 920 I was planning on doing the same as the OP, choosing one, and I went with the 920 initially because I didn't want to be fiddling around with the N4, taking time to flash ROMs, research which kernel is best, figure out why this minor tweak has suddenly borked my entire mobile life, etc, when I'm supposed to be achieving productivity on the level of a respectable member of society. Then I got the N4 in my hands. Phenomenal piece. Not a chance that was going back. When I switch from one to the other, the Lumia feels slow in comparison, almost labored; and that's no slight on it, merely a compliment to the N4's screaming speed. So now it's both.
But in terms of real world use - and I live in a big city - the Lumia gets more day-to-day action for me, in part because I don't have a case for the N4 yet, and I'm terrified of flopping it out of my jacket pocket watching the shards spill across the pavement. I don't baby it, and it's just easier to put somewhere and not worry whether or not the 0.5 degrees of incline is going to send the lubricated glass back hurtling to the floor. I don't worry about the 920. I do about the N4. I also get concerned if I'm out somewhere and the battery is going to die, so I baby the use of my phone under these circumstances; will happen with the N4, won't with the 920. For me, the Lumia sort of ticks a "peace of mind" box. I can throw it in my pocket off the charger and walk out the door, not wondering if it'll last through the night or whether or not it might slap up against something on the subway and shatter, etc.
If it was one or the other and I had both in my hands for a few hours before having to give one back, it'd be no contest: the N4, if my initial concerns about the battery are substantial. I think it's a device of remarkably more potential with a wider variety of uses. However, I think the question to ask is not necessarily which phone is better, but which one best fits your life? People use their devices differently.
For the record, I love having both. Couldn't be happier; what the Nexus 4 gives me - the power, speed, apps, customization, etc. - is complemented perfectly by the 920's strengths - battery, camera, durability, simplicity, LTE, etc. As a pairing of phones, and I've owned a lot of different pairings, this is by far my favorite, and one I'll keep a very long time - which is rare. They're almost the perfect complements in my world. Now if someone could take the best of all these traits and make one single device, they could sell it for four figures on contract and watch the lines on release day stretch counties.

I don't know what you mean by stale. If you like the ability to load custom ROMs, but complain when you have the most moddable Nexus line in your hand, you have some serious problems buddy. If you have some deeply locked down devices then your complain might be valid.
Apparently you never used a Windows Phone before so you feel fresh. I will see how you comment on your Windows Phone after the "honey moon" period is over.
Also, when you post your opinion publicly but don't expect others to comment on it (valid or not), good for you!
May I introduce you to Neowin.net, where all M$ fanboys hangout, so you can have more help with your Nokia.
BTW, I hangout there, too.

Also, when you post your opinion publicly but don't expect others to comment on it (valid or not), good for you!
May I introduce you to Neowin.net, where all M$ fanboys hangout, so you can have more help with your Nokia.
BTW, I hangout there, too.

I mean I have just gotten kind of bored with Android, as in its the SSDD for me. It's not like I haven't owned a few. It's not meant to be offensive to Android, this is a personal problem lol.
My last windows phone is the first on my sig . Been a long time. I had no interest in it when WP7 came out compared to Android but now that I have had Android for a while I picked it up just to try it out and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it runs and functions.
I am not looking for help with either, nor do I expect everyone to see my point of view. All opinions (when stated as such, and not argumentative or stated like it is fact) are very much welcome.
I am not a fanboy of any company OR Operating System, mobile or desktop. I try them all, and I pick what I find the best for ME at the time. I will never understand why some people find the need to attach themselves to one option but to each their own. When it comes down to it, neither of these phones will be in my possession for more than a few months until I get bored with them.
I was just curious what others thought, nothing more, nothing less.
And you may be very well correct on the honeymoon period statement. Part of the enticement to the Lumia IS that WP8 is new to me.(hardware aside) but I will grow bored with it in no time, no doubt.
I fully respect anyone who comes in here with the opinion that I am crazy/stupid/etc for even considering the Lumia over the Nexus, that is fine. I would appreciate some opinions/facts on why, and not fiction about how bad WP8 is (especially if you have never owned one, or at least spent some time with one).
n4 £279
920 £496
if the n4 was closer in price to the 920 it would be a much harder decision. but it isn't. so it isn't. for what you get for your £279, n4 wins hands down.
Well i had android for many years.. but ... it never feels like its it, dont know how to say it.
I have a Lumia 920 now and its bloody awesome, so smooth, never lags, and the appstore is getting bigger everyday.
All my apps i used on Android are in the WP store for me.
Dont get me wrong Android is a great OS, but the changes in versions never live quite up to it.

Smartphones aren't getting better?

Hello fellow smartphone users,
Just something that annoys me, feel like talking about it.
My contract with my mobile provider is over and I can now choose a new contract with a phone
I own a LG G3 since may 2014. I swapped my G2 for the G3 just because of the external SD. Other changes were minimal, but the SD was a must for me.
Now normally you would be happy when your contract is over and you get to choose a new phone, but honestly I'm disappointed. The G3 is a great phone, works very well and has all things one can expect in a todays flagship phones.
Smartphone innovation has stopped. What do the new "flagships" even have to offer that would improve smartphone use? It feels like they desperatly try to make up new things like ow lets add another GB of RAM. Make the phone bigger so there's more room for that extra GB, make it look a little different and sell it as the next big thing.
Right now I feel like waiting till they release new phones like idk the S7 or G5, but honestly there's absolutely no need for a newer phone.
What do you guys think?
Im gonna switch back to iphone ..durability is outstanding and way better than my g3 ..also I have to order a new camera lens due to scratching screen 10$ not a big deal but hey ...also this lag get me to a point of no return ..
send from LG G3

With the amount of smashed screens I've seen on iPhones. I'd say durability is outstandingly bad.

I think that's a really interesting point. Just got my HTC One M7 back to work to fiddle around with it a little bit and it performs sooo well even compared to my G3 (that's running AOSP). There is a Full HD screen and an all metal body - pretty much standard by now for many OEMs. 2013 was in general a major step forward in the smartphone territory, the last 2 waves of flagship were not even close to being so game-changing.

exactly. It's like they're out of innovation. It seems main points of smartphone innovation used to be better screens, faster processor for a smoother and faster user experience and thinner body. But it seems those points are perfected in some way. Higher resolution screens wouldn't do any good. The used software is fast enough and gets all the processing power it needs. Overall graphics are awesome. GPU power can always be improved ofcourse but c'mon who even wants to play call of duty or fallout 4 on a smartphone. And phones are thin enough. Only innovation on battery power would make a significant difference, but that requires entire new technology which isn't developed yet.
At this point smartphones are handheld computers as well as telecommunications devices. What is new in computers from year to year? Hardware. So what do you get with a new laptop this year vs one from last year? faster processors, more memory, SSDs are so 2 years ago, touchscreens more so, Phones, like computers, for the most part 2 year old computers are still working fine so sure, you can get along just fine with a 1 or 2 year old phone. Hardware is in control of the manufacturer, software provided by Google...so new phones from year to year will have better cameras, more RAM, more storage, faster processors, and with new developments in display technology, will be more durable (providing some manufacturers finally drop the idea of glass encased cases..SMH).
Well its kinda off topic but the new Windows mobile with its continuüm is a innovation ithink and a Iris scanner.
But for Android not so much ithink?
well, from my point of view the things i say:
If you are a geek, if you like to be "on top of tecnology" is obvious you want the newer phones, the most talked in the moment but you have a price for that and if you dont care about so go ahead!
If you are satisfied with your device and dont care about evolution, newer things and think "well, is all the same but only with 2 or 3 things different" then i say: stick with your actual phone!
- All depends of your need's or your brain! For me i dont care about better or worst, i have a G3, i love the device and i will keep it as long as i can, and now i will buy a G Flex2 just because the curvature and for SD810 (i know is a problematic processor but i dont care, i want to try it!) and for the experience to have a curved screen! For me LG are my thing, i cant move to other brand, and if you see my history with phones you know i am a LG and Sony user. I dont go for Sony anymore because they dont do it so well as LG does.
I love LG phones because i get in love with back keys, i cant live without them now, and get back to a phone without them is like to go to stone age!
I like the UI of LG, i cant live without IR Blaster now, is so usefull and because my job is eletronics, i work a lot with TV's, STB's and other things and have a IR Blaster to keep me away for the Remotes and have a phone to do that things is a must for me!
It's my opinion, and i will go for G Flex2 because theyr ridiculous price right now (i can order it for 260€ ~280$) and for the hardware they offer worth a lot the price!
I dont go for apple products because i think they dont worth the price they want for theyr products, i think is a steal to consumers because every year they launch a different one with 1 or 2 things different but the apple users brain says "i have to get the last because i am on top of the tecnologic world" - shut up guy's iphone's is only for status, i cant see other thing from people who buy that thing!
If anyone give me one iphone i sell it as fast i could and for the price i get for it i will buy 2 LG phones, and with better specs...and for sure i will keep the change!

Well, I am a tech guy, and I have always wanted the best. Not just with technology, but also with musical instruments(i'm a musician). I need to have the best guitar, I need to have the best amplifier, I need to have the best pc, graphics card, and ofcourse phone. I have always had the latest flagships since smartphones became a thing. But now it doesn't feel like that. I would need to spend some extra money on my new contract and pay about €200 intitial costs, but for the first time it feels like it's not worth it, but the "need for the best" is still there, believe me

i know your point, and i am the same but i never feel "love" for apple, i dont think theyr products atractive, and never think they are high end...because they arent!

yeah i'm not talking about apple. Apple is out of the question. Extremely overpriced, retarded company charging 100 extra for extra storage, purposely excluding a 32gb version. Breaks to easy and is build to last 2 years. There are always battery problems, which can not be removed ofcourse because, you know, **** you, you don't get a removable battery or SD slot, or the possability to replace parts. Need a new screen?, better buy a whole new phone. My parents actually got the advice to buy a new ipad when their new one didn't start anymore. When I got it in my hands, I pushed some buttons and it seemed it was only in recovery mode.
nonono apple is not even an option, don't even get me started on their purposely locked software with retarded compatability for pretty much anything

ok, now i get cleared about what you want! well...all depends of the offer your network offers, if you want a update better wait 1 or 2 months because V10 is out there and some networks will have it, or wait more and get the G5 wich i can tell is the bomb for the new year, i belive SD820 be inside it!
honestly i think smart phones have hit that 'ceiling' in evolution, same way dumb phones have hit the ceiling right before the iphones changed up everything (didnt really change but more like pivot in a different direction with more overhead evolution).
Manufacturers can stick in better spec processors, ram, storage etc.. but as long as people feel they have everything that they need currently, then we're stuck in a loop until convinces us otherwise.

seriously dude? i owned iphone, not the latest one like iphone 6, 6+ and 6Sh*t + Rose Gold..
it's just Black Coloured iPhone5S and i use it for my second number..
here's my own review in term of PERFORMANCE and DURABILITY
yes, iphone is a real lag-free devices, the software is real outstanding !
it's worth to pay for that ( iOS ) but unfornately the iphones not even great in term of durability
my iphone crack it screen twice in my pockets! LOL.. maybe my jeans is too tight i guess..
so i replaced it twice and already waste around $200 for that S*tty Screen.
and in terms of BATTERY LIFE and CAMERA
my iPhone is worser than my G3 ( avg 14 hours ) or my Xperia ZL ( avg 8 hours ) or maybe Lenovo A889 ( avg Almost a day )!
Please take note that i'm not a heavy user, enough for socialing and clash of clans only.
for camera, both doing great job ( flawless result ) but extra score for G3 with additional support for 4K video, OIS and RAW with XCam.
Don't Forget! G3 also have front facing flash too.. so i wouldn't need the iPhone 6Sh*t for an upgrade..
As conclusion, iphone easy to use in one hand while android is real fun to use.. NO JOKE!
but it's customizable.. even jailbroken iphone can't be customized too much.. still boring
what i can say, it's your choice.. and this is my opinion.. bear in mind that nothing is perfect
everything made has it's own pro's and cons depend on what purpose do you use it for..
Final word from me, i'm still use both of it... im satisfied with both G3 and iPhone 5S
I definitely agree with you on the fact that these recent phones have just been disappointing. I was itching to buy the 6p when I heard about it, but then when I realized they removed external battery and SD card that was my deal breaker. It's really sad that our contracts can expire and we can still prefer our current phones, but I have hope that we'll see some amazing stuff in the next few years. I'm currently in love with my g3, and the only thing that'll take it away from me is an equal device with a fingerprint scanner.
However, right now seems to be the year of software. We're getting an amazing update compared to our lollipop experiences, and google is really refining itself.

Coming from the last 4 generations of nexus phones, the G3 was my first non nexus in a while. I kept it for 11 months, but i could never get used to the lag and choppy animations, it just hurt my eyes. I liked the camera though. Recently i sold it and switched back to my nexus 5, and i cannot describe enough how silky smooth it is on Marshmallow, every transition animation, every action, it's just a pleasure to use, despite being a 2 year old phone.
For me, the only candidate for a possible upgrade would be the nexus 6P, but i might as well just skip this generation and wait for a 2016 stock android flagship.
I'm not returning to laggy phones anymore.

I experienced lag aswell when the 5.0 update was released. After the first update this problem was solved for me. Also some advice or just a little trick idk, I also turn off some animations or speed them up in the developer mode menu in order to make things a bit quicker and possibly less laggy. When this is done the phones feels faster.
Right now I'm waiting for the 2016 releases aswell. We'll see what LG or maybe samsung has to offer coming year.
