Question for those who use WiFi on their X1 - XPERIA X1 General

How far from the WiFi HotSpot can your X1 get before the connection is useless? I'm in a house and it barely works in the next room (newer house, walls made of drywall). My brother has an iPod Touch that works all over the house perfectly (same router). I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the WiFi radio on my X1?

i get v good coverage from the x1 as good as the iphone. try changing your radio firmware

WhyBe,
Is it set to best performance or best battery?
Go under settings to check.
Cheers.

Doesn't it depend on the HotSpot itself ?- I mean on the router, its signal strength and etc...I connect to my router trough 2 brick + concrete walls and have no problems at all...Always connected in every room

same , even good outside/inside the neighbours house ,
be sure to have the 1.15 or 1.16 radio (or smthing like that , the new ones)
+what poisonwolf said
and dont buy a metal case for ur phone
also helps if i slide open the phone for me ... and its good to face the router too (not with ur back towards it)

I can always connect to my router from the door on the street (I live on the first floor) and everywhere in the house including the bedroo with router being on the corridor outside.
And I did not tweak anything in my EnergyROM 3.0

Thanks all. I have never specifically changed my radio firmware. Is this something that is updated when I change ROMs? I've went from R1a to R2a to R3a. Does the radio get changed with these?
I have the X1 set to best performance.

It depends on what kind of router you have. The cheap ones are crappy. I have a medium spec one and I get good connectivity through 3 walls.

I have a LinkSys G router. It is pretty common. Everything I use works fine with it (3 laptops and iPod Touch). Only the X1 can see it but not connect.

Did you see the settings in the phone that allow you to use better Wi-Fi reception, but get poor battery life? I had problems with Wi-Fi until I set it to "better performance" rather than "better battery life".

Yes, it is set to best performance. My X1 recognizes the router but doesn't connect. I'm wondering if there is some other problem?
EDIT: OK, I just discovered that if I turn off the phone radio, the WiFi works properly. Is it supposed to be this way?

with linksys and all other routers really one have to upgrade the firmware once in awhile
to get best support with newer devices

Nope. There is a problem. I have no idea what it could be though . Maybe an update is a good thought.

I only use stock ROMs and haven't really tweaked my system beyond factory state. So I don't see why I need to update anything. I'm thinking there is some sort of conflict between my internet settings for the phone and the internet settings for the WiFi connection?

Mine did that when I 1st tried to set it up, it would find the network (hidden) ok, but would not connect. No matter what I tried, even though 2 pc's (wired), laptop (wireless), xbox (wired) & iPod touch (wireless) were working fine.
I gave up on the X1 and turned my attention to the router, tried a static IP for the X1 etc (it's back on DCHP now), after rebooting the router, the X1 connected and worked fine and it has ever since. I have no idea why - but initially it would not connect - something funny with the router.

I have a netgear router and every now and then kicks me off. i have to disable my wifi on the x1 and reconnect or even power off the router and back on for it to work.
Turn off your router for 1 minute and power back on then try to reconnect your x1.

I have a Linksys WRT160N router and it actually doesn't even detect it when it transmits mixed speed, only of I put it on B and G it detects it.
Otherwise the signal is average, a bit worse then my laptop.

I only use Wi-Fi at my university. Well basically my Wi-Fi works everywhere around campus, at the dorms, and at the movie theater right next to school.
It's freaking great, but I prefer 3G. I just can't afford it.

WiFi?

Hi, i recently bought and upgraded a 02 XDA Mini S to WM6 and the wifi seems bad like i have to go right next to the wireless point to get a good signal and even then its not at full bar can any1 help me with this or is it just the wifi is rubbish on the wizard?
thanks,
Kurt
Did you go to start-->settings-->connections tab-->wireless LAN-->power mode tab and set it on best performance? That should give you some more room to work with.
yep still is really bad though about 10 meters and 2 walls away from the router an i couldnt get a signal.
At "10 meters and 2 walls away from the router" I also get no connection -where my Wifi enabled laptop works fine at the same time. Seems like the Wifi on the HTC device is rather weak and operates from a small distance only. Anyways I've learned to live with it.
oh rite well annoying though considering my dell axim x51 can get a very good signal like 30 meters from the access point. is there anyway i can up the power on my wizard? ive got wireless G enabled aswell.
Ya, I have a 7db antennae on my router and I still seem to need to be inside of 20 or so feet, and no walls for my wizard to find the network. I think it's just a weak card.
I also noticed that.
Yes I also noticed that. I have a wifi hotspot subscription and with my old WM5 ROM i can connect and surf without any problem, however when useing any WM6 ROM i just connect poorly and the connection breaks everytime.
Even in my wireless home router i had turn on the name broadcast (enabling WEP of course) in order to connect properly at the first try.
Ive noted this with every WM6 Rom out there and since my device is a G4 i cant upgrade the radio rom. so... well i suffer from this issue also.

Wifi sucks :(

Hi all,
I just got my device, and still thinking whether to send it back in 7 days. My main complain is the wifi. I have never seen more than 2 bars (out of 4) signal strength, even when sitting 2 meters from the router. Moreover it always drops the connection. I realized it when I tried to use IE for browsing, since that doesn't tolerate it and I keep getting the connection lost messages. Seems that Opera can live with it, but I see when the connection dropped during the page load. Youtube watcher also cannot manage to download videos when the signal is dropped.
The Tx/Rx rate also changes chaotically from 1Mb/1Mb to 54Mb/36Mb.
Before you ask: the Power Mode of wifi is set to "Best Performance", since this is the only way it is usable.
Anybody else with similar experiences?
Any solution?
I really appreciate any help, I would like to keep it!
I have no problems what-so-ever with the wifi on my D2...
It runs very well, in all applications that can use it.
- and I have full signal when I am within 5 meters of the router.
I haven't changed any settings on the device, and the router is running on WPA2-PSK at a channel not used by any of my neighbours.
Maybe you have many wireless networks in your area?
Hi,
I have more or less your problems (I opened a thead about it the day I unpacked my D2 but wasn't really condiderated). Here's my condition: I have 3 HTC devices...Artemis-->regular functioning (balanced power), TytnII-->Power Performance MUST be set to high performance, Topaz..well I could connect with balanced power but since I upgraded radio I have to keep it set to best performance, otherwise I would get "fake" connections (connection established but no data taffic). I don't really bother to have to set it like that because the connection is dam fast, which compensates the higher power consumpion. But beside this, I must say that my router is not very friendly with my D2,e.g. when I don't get a connection,I restart it and it works (this must have to do with DCHP service). I have much less trouble connecting alsewhere. So ,what to say? Try to change radio...Do you have other wireless devices working regularly in the same area?Do you have an original rom?You could also try to change wifi channel..would be happy to help
Hi,
Thank you for the answer. I have original ROM, just checked the radio, it is: 3.43.25.19. I didn't experience "fake connections" when it is connected, it is so .
I cannot change the wifi channel, the same router is used by others. However it cannot be the cause of my issues since my notebook's network works fine on the same router.
Changing the radio... seems a good idea. It is my very first smart device, I even thought that this version number was for the hardware, not the software . I will find out how to do it, maybe give it a try. Hope it is an officially supported action .
Hi Lamsebamsen,
The TD2 sees 4 wifi networks, my notebook sees 8. Is it many or not? I think the 4 which the TD doesn't see is many .

I'm afraid not, as you would have to HardSPL your device first. There would still a way to get back to your original configuration but I don't know if you are prone to do so, that depends on how much responsability you can take on your device (is it from work or..). Another thing to try is to manually configurate your connection (e.g. assign D2 always the same IP, but watchout for network collisions!router should be set aswell)

Wifi sucks on touch HD

When I first bought the touch HD I was thinking how good it would be to have this phone while having wifi with the lack of 3g for tmobile in the us, but it turns out that the wifi acutally suck! I have a iPod touch 2g And the wifi works great with blazing speed. I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod. I been very disappoint with this phone for simple fact that this phone recieves wifi poorly. Anyone can help me out with this problem would be much appreciated because despite the wifi problem I love the phone cause the 3.8 screen is so damn sexual lol.
I've no such issues!
Try to set wifi power options to performance. Also, Enabling G Mode (with SKTools is one of the ways) helps improve speed.
Thanks for the info but it might be the lack of range of my router cause I have been on my wifi with the phone before but I get disconnected frequently and most the time it doesn't even show up or detect it but I don't have that problem with the iPod. With iPod I seem to get wifi everywhere. I'm starting to believe the iPod is better might sell it and get a iPhone or maybe a hero but don't know if I'm willing to spend 600+ on another phone
Next time put [rant] on the title
My wifi connects well to open, WEP, and WPA connections. I tried numerous access points (at least 30), even 802.11n APs in mixed g mode. It even connects to Apple Airport (802.11g). The connection is stable both on power saving and best performance, but I think I get much better speeds on average with best performance.
Its wifi range is much better than my little HP 613 smartphone, but again worse than my notebook. I get 54Mbit connection with signal quality of about 50% at 10 meters through a wall and then it automatically finds another channel on another AP. It roams (handover) APs better than some Lenovo r61 laptops around!
But I am not satisfied with its speed (even on best performance) - it finishes copying a 700MB file on a 54 Mbit connection in 30-40 minutes using total commander and saving on storage card. That means average speed is around 300-400KB/s - laptop does the same (same AP, same file, same network settings) at 1.6-1.8 MB/s in around 7 minutes.
I also noticed that saving on storage card is slighty faster than into the main memory...
I can't seem to detect my wifi at home mean while I'm connected on my wifi with my iPod.

Hmm, are you sure that you don't compare two different situations ? Did you also try connecting to Wifi with your iPod while already being connected with your Blackstone ?
My personal experience shows me that the Touch HD seems to have a better radio than the iPhone 3G. Have you upgraded to the latest Blackstone stock ROM and radio available on the HTC website or XDA Devs ? Whether or not the radio also affects Wifi unfortunately I don't know.
Moreover, use WifiMonster to monitor the strength of the signal, it'll help you discover the best spots for using Wifi. I even receive Wifi signals from the neighbors' houses in my own house (not speaking about appartments), of course that always depends on the room !
BTW I'm pretty sure that a Hero won't solve your problem, it's the same old hardware specs as on the Blackstone.
The Wifi on my device works perfectly and i have had no issues at all with signal or quality. I have had more problems with my ipod than the HTC, are you sure its not the WIFI AP you are trying to connect to? Also are you using stock rom or custom?
I'm using the Energy ROM. I'm assume its my wifi signal its very weak and my touch hd cant seem to detect it. With my ipod i shows up and i can connect to it...will updating the radio make a difference?
I came across a startling discovery the other day regarding the Touch HD wifi. I was also having issues at home with weak wifi signal. I didn’t seem to have this problem with public access hot spots.
I have a Logitech wireless mouse connected to my computer and very rarely turn that computer off. I found that when my computer was off I would get a rock solid connection to my home wifi, but when the computer was on it would drop in and out. I narrowed it down to the wireless mouse was interfering with the Touch HD wifi connection.
I tried all different channels on my router, but as long as the Logitech mouse was plugged it I would get wifi dropouts. But as soon as I unplugged the mouse and the radio dongle, I wouldn’t have any problems with the Touch HD wifi.
I can’t comment if this is your issue, but something might be interfering in the 2.4Ghz with wifi.
Guys,
Sometimes even cordless phones, microwaves, etc will interfere with the connection.
Cheers.
As Poison Wolf correctly pointed out, other household items can interfere with the wireless frequency. Try changing the channel that's being used to transmit from your box (This will involve changing some settings on your wireless router so do some research before you fiddle around with it) I have had to do this before and can confirm it can make a massive difference.

Everybody has this problem because the card seems not capable of more speed.

Stron,
Hmm, interesting. The only reasoning I can think of is that perhaps there's a limiting factor in order to reduce the heat or something? I don't see why they would cap the speeds.
Cheers.
What if it is capable of connecting at 54 Mbit, but can actually do only 11 Mbit? Nice trick. I hope it is just a bad idea.

Wi-Fi problems?

Have any of you guys had any problems with Wi-Fi on the Galaxy Tab?
I've been trying to connect this device with a wide range of routers and keep ending up with no or a very poor signal.
Just upgraded to firmware P1000XWJJ3 and the problem persists.

How far away from the router? Any walls between?
My Tab works pretty well if i'm close to the router, but with some distance between - oh say 5-6 meters - it rapidly decreases and soon enough drop the connection all together. Very strange, been trying different routers and different settings and it's the same all over the board.
Regarding the firmware (JJ3), just go to http://www.samfirmware.com/ click "Tablets" and select firmware and then install with Odin. Easy as one, two, three.
MIne works fine with through thick walls on the balcony. What wireless security/ preamble type have you got? Is the router set to 20/40? Is it transmitting at 100% or auto?
The router doesn't matter. If i sit on my balcony smoking a cigarette, I either have a weak signal or the tab switches to 3G. My phone or laptop hold the signal easily.
The distance is like 5 meters and 3 wals between us. One of them concrete. But my phone holds the signal there, while my tab doesn't. On the other hand my wife's SE Xperia X10 barely holds inside the living room. So I guess android in general is not that good with wireless.

Of course the router matters mate. Instead of guessing why dont you try to troubleshoot... surely logic alone will tell you that its not your tab as a)noone else is having this problem b)your xperia is.
If it ain't broken - don't fix it. This router serves half a dosen of devices. Only android ones are having issues.
My laptop, my wife and my daughter's laptops, my htpc and my son's desktops as well as my phone are OK with it. It is on 100% and no encryption. I have it for years now and it never disappointed me. Why should I blame the router?
For one thing, if youve had it for years it is possible there are firmware updates that will immediately improve the connection of both your working devices and the newer, less backwards compatible android devices.
There are also security frames and CTS overhead to consider. Your router may just be too old to communicate with the newer radios in the android devices. These things happen all the time. Just google wifi problem and add any device you can think of to the end of that... there will be people conplaining about weak signal everywhere, and its usually the routers that are at fault.
EDIT: If it aint broke dont fix it is not an acceptable philosophy for a gadget lover

I've tried a multitude of different settings and it can't even compare to my Nexus One or Galaxy S. Keeps dropping the connection and report a signal strength of about 10%, it's driving me nuts! My current configuration is as follows:

Network:NG-Mixed
Channel:2 (2.417 GHz)
Channel width: 20 MHz

Simply flashed with default ODIN settings and both EUR firmware and EUR PIT-file ( Galaxy Tab / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (EUR). I didn't do a wipe before nor did I clear dalvik cache or any such thing.
Can't really tell about the browser, from my point of view it feels pretty much the same.

explanation
The problem is almost certainly your old wifi router having bugs with PSP (power save mode). Android relies on the PSP standard to reduce the power usage on Wifi, your laptop and other old devices probably don't. I've seen old routers disconnecting almost immediately with android devices...
You can try setting "Wifi Sleep Policy" set to "Never" (will impact battery live, obviously). Though there was a bug fixed in ~July where Android would still use PSP, and the tab might not have the fix yet.
But the best fix is to buy a new router. It is broken, standards-wise, and needs to be fixed. Also, newer wifi routers are a lot faster and generally hold the connection better, so its really a no-brainer...
Ditto my brother!

I have to agree... I have two instances of WiFi use with my new Tab:
1) At home, older Netgear router (not that old mind you) - DG834PN - Does 802.11b/g/Super G
2) At work, brand new Netgear router (brand spankin' new) - Wireless N etc
At work, my connection on the tab is consistent without a drop out, fault less and constantly fast. Even the signal strength is good across the other side of the building.
At home however on my older router (no Wireless N) it's slow, signal strength is poor and constant drop outs are present. I need to hit "Retry" on the network connection box so often at home.
So yeah I feel that should be fairly conclusive. The Tab seems to like brand new wireless hardware.
No wonder. 802.11N is much stronger WRT to power since it has 2 antennas. But it is still the tab to blame that it doesn't hold a signal of standard equipment.
Actually, the problem you're having at home is super g. Its not a wireless standard. If it is working in 20/40 auto mode, just switch it to 20 only. This should improve your network connection in general.
Also gonsider using g only - b is pretty redundant by now.

My router lists b and g, g only or Auto 108mbps.
I have had it selected on g only for a while now.
What settings does it have for the super g... does it give you the option of disbling pairing or something like that? It could be the bonding that causes your disconnects.

GT-I9505 deteriorating wifi functionality (not D-Link related)

I have had my phone for over a month and for the last 5 days I have experienced really poor wifi performance. I've read that there has been a lot of problems with D-Link routers and such but my wifi was working OK up until the last week and I do not use D-Link (although the chips maybe the same from what I have read). I have tried to see whether it can be related to an app update but I can't systematically test that. Dropped the phone a couple of times on the floor from my sofa, can this be it?
I get full signal when standing next to the router but the signal drop dramatically when moving away. Mobile signal and transfer speeds are all OK. I will try and test other routers when I get the chance.
Any thoughts?

Kaspersky Mobile Security installed (I've read somewhere that this might be a problem?)
Home router TP-Link (TD-W8961ND v1.1)

Strange...
Couple of questions?
1) Are you on 802.11G or 802.11N at home? (I know the TD-W8901G is 802.11G only)
2) If on 802.11N at home are you running the antenna at 2.4 or 5Ghz?
3) Have you checked your router's antenna (assuming you have an external antenna) for damage or disconnection?
4) Do you have a case on your phone? Does the signal get better without the case on it?
5) Is there anything else in the house that could be interfering with the 2.4Ghz wireless signal (wireless cameras, cordless phones, etc.)?

The TV uses our wlan and of course a couple of other phones too.
The router at home is a TD-W8961ND v1.1. If I stand in an adjacent room at home (4-5m), door open, I can see the router then I have -70dBm according to the Wifi Analyzer app. Is that what can be expected? Thing is that I use the phone from upstairs, concrete floor and it has been ok, no problem streaming Netflix and such but that doesn't work now. No problems from my desktop computer which also use the wlan.
This is so fuzzy that I am going to start recording the signal strength to get some references. I tested my laptop at work today at a specific location from where I normally use the phone and the signal was worse on the laptop too (Windows 8 Pro and signal showed 1 bar, then full signal strengh, 1 bar and so on). Damn. I am slowly getting cross eyed here.
I have deactivated all bloatware on the phone, removed apps I do not use and one app I have been suspicious of is Wordfeud but of course I have no concrete information on that. Remember from my old HTC DZ that it seemed to be hard on the network on the phone.
Gotta sleep and thanks for your reply!
I have had the same problem with my galaxy s4. wi-fi had appeared connected on the phone but web pages were not loading. got a replacement s4 thinking it was the phone. had the second phone for a week and was working fine and then installed kaspersky mobile and wi-fi was very intermittent again. Did not occur to me initially and a lot of research got me my result. Had tinkered with TKIP and AES settings on modem as some people had luck with that but that was due to D-link routers as well known. uninstalled kaspersky mobile and wi-fi has worked perfectly ever since! There may be certain older kaspersky mobile software versions still compatible but dont know which one as yet.

Thanks for the info. I have removed Kaspersky meanwhile to see whether it helps. I've done so many changes at home to my WIFI router and a connected TP_Link AP(TL-WA901N).
Yesterday I could connect to my TL-WA901N upstairs for the first time (its been used for the TV only so far), Kaspersky removed, changes made in the TL-WA901N and TD-W8961ND and after fidgeting back and forth I cannot pinpoint what exactly made me connect via the AP. So I cannot blame Kaspersky but I will reinstall it later and if I get problems again then I know. I will update the results here. Network issues isn't my cup of tea.
Signal strength is the same, will test the bandwidth when I get home.
OK so I have now solved the problem. Bought a new router which supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz. It seems like the two frequencies complement each other in our apartment. Re-installed Kaspersky and I have not had any problems.
