I've used it off and on since january. A search will find a lot of comments on it.
It eats the batteries FAST, so best used only on external power.
i dosnt seem to drain much power on my mogul 1500mah

it drains my battery faster than it can charge via 500ma USB (not much faster, but still faster)

HA! just a little bit of irony. WMWifirouter started out here on xda-developers as a community built freeware application. im sure the long time posters (and lurkers like myself) are very familiar with it. but good looking out for the new people.
i use .91 (right before it went pay) and love it. probably the highest ease of use to benefits ratio of any app i've ever seen. never had a problem with it. so good i've canceled my DSL and now use my phone as my main link to the internet.
I use it here as well. Great little tool.

with how much bandwidth I use, my acct would get flagged too quick. Plus, the phone is fast i EVDO coverage, but wired broadband is still faster for me.
Yep it drained my battery fastery than it could charge. Then I went with a 3500 battery learned to always put it into low power mode. This keeps the battery from getting so darn hot. Then I bought the boxwave hi charge lighter plug. So now I am good to go.
But I am now experiencing getting kicked out because it thinks I need PAM and I am not a subscriber and won't be needing that. So now I am looking and searching for a way to eliminate a pam option.
hey guys was just wondering if there is an app to disconnect the battery from charging while under usb power. I like to use gps on long trips and the battery gets pretty hot and thats not good for it.
So is there an app for this? is this a good idea? would be much easier than taking apart my case and taking out the battery while using gps. on second thought I guess the battery would still get warm just from the proximity of it to the gps/cell antenna
I don't think there is. I've been wanting to play around with developing an app. I may give this a try in the future.
I have a mount that connects to my vent while in the car. Keep cool air running over it and the temp shouldn't exceed 35C. I run wireless tether, gps, 4g and mobile radios with no problem.
no ac and being in florida only adds to the heat
I would try SetCpu...you can use that to change the underclock the cpu when it gets above a certain temp (which should cool it down)
that would help but not when i need the cpu cycles for tile loading while using gps navigation. Guess takin out the battery and running straight usb power is the only option. Or leave battery in and shorten its lifespan. they are pretty cheap anyways.
I don't think you CAN run it off USB power with no battery in it, can you?

This thing gets hot! Just been configuring launcher pro which took around 5 minutes and wasn't data intensive and the back of the phone is really hot. So much that I can smell the plastic heating up! The battery drained real fast during the process too.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
Well that doesn't sound good! I haven't had anything like that. Have you checked the power intake?

Mine got really hot the first day I used it (27/4)...I was just checking out features and installing a few apps. I rebooted it after the battery was fully charged and it's been fine ever since.

I have the exact same problem, it happens especially when I play any games or intensive appliaction. The battery drains and it gets hot next to the camera, I suspect this is where the cpu lives. Do you think its because its rooted? because I rooted it as soon as I got it so I dont know what it was like before.
And as I am away from the uk for the next six weeks I cant even send it back to O2
No nothing to do with root, mine was same before and after, pretty normal to get hot on some demanding apps.

It gets really hot sometimes though, not to the extent of burnt plastic smell but it gets pretty uncomfortable touching around lens at the back.
I've been going through this this morning. It seems that the CPU loves to go up to 1.2GHz even if it doesn't need to be that high (and it stays there). Also there I've also been noticing through ADB shell that their are a few niggles. For example the wi-fi sharing process can start without even being activated.
For example this was a ADB shell top taken while running Cordy downclocked to 800MHz in setcpu. The phone was a tiny bit warm but only by the camera (where the CPU is). Basically, this just shows that if you are playing a game, nothing else is going on so the CPU shouldn't be going up to 1200MHz. And it plays the same as when it isn't underclocked.
I'm currently assisting Pulser with investigating this until he gets his SGS2.

My phone gets very hot at time too...
I also noticed wifi sharing starting up by itself. Yesterday it started by itself and used 10% battery usage even though I had wifi switched off the entire time..

Do you have root and Titanium/MyBackup Pro?
If you do, freeze anything that mentions wifi sharing, unless you are going to use wifi hotspot and kies air a lot.

I posted on this a few days ago..
My phone got so hot that it shut itself down!
since that i have done a complete reset of the phone and started from scratch again....100% better.
The problem as i see it is with all the 'tinkering' that we users do. All the additional launchers etc and widgets that you add really seem to mess the phone up!
My advice is keep the phone as samsung intended it...or at least change very little. You will see far improved battery life and none of the over heating problems.
Just my opinion but its worked for me.

Find the nearest Apple store near you.
The only time i had this was when it waa both charging, in a case and playing a big game...
Im currently chatting, listening to a live stream, charging and posting this, no problem with heat at all..
Perhaps its a problem with some specific phones

that's just not true.
Mine gets hot aswell .. it's random sometimes but usualy with playing games etc. I suspect it has something to do with the samsung drivers/software and not our tinkering.

Mine also gets fairly hot, which might be a little uncomfortable - but that's the sacrifice you make when you get such a high powered device in such a small space.
Well,amount of apps/tinkering/etc has nothing to do with the phone getting got UNLESS an installed app in messing something up.I have heard many such cases when a rogue app made the CPU run at 100% in different phones.If that's the case you have to find and remove the app.I'd suggest OS monitor for finding it.Never happened to me though!
What's more,it's normal for it to get more hot than your average phone,as it carries more power under the hood and has nothing to help it dissipate the generated heat,as it's plastic.The Desire HD does a very good job with managing heat and I have never exceeded 40 C,even when gaming with an overclock at 1.8GHz and performance governor.Not saying the DHD is better,but Samsung wouldn't have left something like this if it would damage the phone.So I tend to believe that it's designed to get hot.
Mine has overheated twice.
Both times, when trying to pair itself automatically to my car kit. The phone got really really hot (i noticed it warming my leg in my jeans pocket) and needed the battery pulling out to reset it. When it started back up, the running temp was nearly 50 degrees (in standby, it runs at about 27)
Hasn't done it since though, just keeping my eye on it!

Not sure if anyone has ever posted this but I thought I would share how I am able to get 2 days plus on single charge...
I only recomend this if you are not totally dependent on your email, facebook, gtalk, etc to sync.
I have my email accounts on my phone but I don't need to receive them instantly meaning they are not dire important so this works for me.
Android's biggest battery killer, which most of you probably know, is data syncing in background and just data connection in general. What I personally do is keep 3G data off at all times by going to settings->wireless and networks->mobile networks->3G Data and uncheck it.
Obviously with this off, you wont be able to connect to web, get emails, download apps, etc... But if you live in a 4G area like me, all I do every once in awhile is flip on 4G from dropdown let it sync or do what I got to do then flip 4G back off so there is no connection anymore... This will save so much of your battery but it is up to you to check things when you need to....
I hope this helps some people because it helps me a lot... I always recommend this to customers that come in my store if they are not depending on work email and such...

Freaking retards. Especially if you are sleeping why not turn off sync for the email that is not going to come anyways. I haven't seen the battery life yet as I did since eclair though.

I know they can say all they want but it works I keep getting 2 or 3 days
You can get juice defender to do this automatically as well. You can also have it only activate data when the screen is on or for certain apps. Just sayin

Personally, I think juice defender is crap and battery life doesn't save as much as doing it yourself... Im just saying...
Actually my biggest killer is display. Our devices our the only ones with 90%+ battery usage for display, yet they advertised that it required 20% less battery!

I know! The display is a killer but even so doing this with full brightness and I can still push a day and a half... I usually keep my brightness all the way down though and manage to push upto 3 days...

Wow...i use to get great battery life. I'm using lowest brightness setting, sfr, and ultimate juice defender and getting only like 16 to 24 hours of life.
What else are you guys doing? I use to get 50 hours but not anymore..

I am not sure, I keep lowest brightness and keep data off almost all day except for occasional checking but maybe 10 minutes total of data being on... I have noticed with EC05 battery life lowered even on complete stock... Most people in my store hve epics and all have suffered worse battery since the update... It didnt matter if it was OTA or OTW...
Maybe try and get a new battery...
I think the reasons the 'haters' come out is simply because you're stating your getting better battery life and then revealing you're castrating your phone. It is a smartphone after all. It's supposed to do all those things you turn off. This isn't a phone which is only supposed to make calls. I mean, if I wanted to check my email once a day, I'd simply do it while I'm in front of a computer.
I don't believe I'm one of said-haters but possibly providing a bit of information on where they're coming from as well.
I think it's well documented that Android phones pretty much suck in terms of battery life, especially when compared to Blackberry. Man, RIM got it right on that aspect.

How is that castrating your phone? I can still do everything else on the phone... You don't need a constant data connection to use it like a PDA. Do all tabs have a constant data connection? No, so are they not going to be considered PDA because they lack internet sometimes? no
I am sorry to say but if your managing your phone and doing things to better, that is not castrating, that is good device management and what should be done so it runs how you want...

Well, it sorts of like taking a porsche and not pushing it past 2nd gear. Some people are happy with it, some are not. On one hand, battery saving posts can be thought as misleading, if the premise is that you dont compromise any functionality. I prefer to charge my phone everyday and not worry about battery, but when your battery is dying when you need it in the evening, than one is of a different opinion entirely.
One thing which I realized to late, is if you are at work in the office or somewhere with wifi, you can toggle 3G off and not lose any functionality, since wifi uses a lot less juice.
I have tried I new battery, I have three that I alternate between. I have no idea what has happened to my phone. It could be the phone itself

And I did say from the beginning what it does and what you loose from it... The only reason it was posted was to try and help people who may be newer to android and needing to squish extra minutes out of their phone for the day... Or they may find themselves not near a charger and almost dead and need their phone so turn off data to preserve the battery... I mean it doesn't "cripple" your phone to turn off data... I can still play angry birds, check my calendar, call people, text, etc. You don't need your phone to have data to use its features...

Have you tried reflashing stock ECO5 and starting from scratch? The only time I started noticing a big difference and I reflashed to stock and customed it again it fixed it...
But you're right, the phone could be giving out...

I'm truly upset about this, because I think this phone is almost marvellous. But in the two weeks I've had it a few horrible problems have emerged, and I can't find solutions.
If anyone can help (REALLY help), I'd be very grateful.
So. Here I go:
1) The antennae (or whatever). I'm sitting here, in my study, which is in my garden, about 60 feet from the house. In the house (right on the kitchen window) I have a wi-fi AP, to boost the signal. In my study I have : a PS3; a desktop PC; a (Samsung) netbook; an iPhone 3gs; an HTC TP2, and the SGS2. Every single device has a good-to-excellent connection. Except the SGS2. Which says "poor", except that most of the time it can't get a signal at all - so that's not even as good as "poor";
2) I took a friend to hospital today. There were three of us in the waiting room. The SGS2 had no (phone) reception. The others did;
3) On the way to the hospital I needed to use Google Nav. I plugged the SGS2 into my car charger. It didn't charge. I've since tried three different chargers (and no, they weren't from Poundland). Same thing. The SGS2 just won't charge in my car if it needs plenty of juice. I've been trawling the webs and this seems to be a common issue - but nobody has a definite answer. I was about to spring for an official Sammy charger, but nobody seems to know for sure if it'll do the trick.
4) The sound isn't great, either in fidelity (and I'm using Shure SE530s, just so you know I care about good sound) or volume. It's tolerable, but only that. No comparison to my little Sansa clip, or even (I hate to say) the 3GS;
5) (though not as much as some, it would seem) the battery life is a bit meh. And I'm not a heavy user.
I read many people complaining about silly little things. A lot of them are down to software or simple ignorance. But a super-smartphone that has poor connectivity and can't be used as a satnav (whilst simultaneously charging). Well, I'm sorry, but...
As I said at the top, I'm genuinely miserable about this. I really, really thought that this was the Smartphone to Rule Them All.
And, again, if anyone can offer me hope that things will get better, please do. Sadly, I think I'll be going back to separate gadgets to fulfill my needs. A phone that works as a phone (and maybe a diary); a satnav that charges in the car; a music player that sounds good. Etc, etc.
ive got a crappy 8-in-1 car charger works fine.
I have none of the problems you said in your post so maybe you just got a **** phone, maybe return it for another.

Do you mean it works fine when you're also using satnav? Because there seem to be many, many people whose SGS2 won't charge when running satnav.
That's what I was thinking maybe one problem is tolerable but all those things you mentioned I would've been took that boy back for a swap out. Unless you brought it online.

Yes, maybe I have a "**** phone". Then again, lots of people seem to be having similar issues. Do you think there was a bad batch? Can you charge the phone in-car whilst using satnav? Is your wifi strength as good as your other devices?
I think I may call Vodafone now and see if a replacement helps. That's if they'll still swap it out.
If you arent happy with the phone, return it/exchange it.
simple as.
As for advice, read the threads.
I also have none of the problems you are suffering. My wifi works as well as any other device I have had. Phone signal is better on the same network a my htc desire. Sound quality is better than my desire. Battery life is so far pretty good and will get better with use and even better once 2.3.4 comes out very soon.
As for your charging issues while using nav this is a common thing with cheap chargers, you might not have got it from poundland but its just not supplying enough juice. Had exactly the same problem when I first got my desire over a year ago, ended up modifying my car charger by soldering the data wires together to force it to max out its current output. Use that same charger for my sg2.
The only problem ive had is the car charger one which i didnt realise untill yesterday. All your other problems dont exist on my phone so mabey exchange it

just been out to the car and can confirm, it charges fine with google navigation running - seems to make no difference with mine navigation or not.
keep soldiering on dont give up on yer sgs2 yet!

Thats the thread from the HTC desire doing the exact same thing. If your charger is 1000ma you should be able to mod it or a cable so that it will happily charge your sg2, if not make sure the next one you buy can supply enough current.

The phone seems to have love/hate relationships with different routers. In the way I use it, it works as well as a G2 and G2X connecting in the same locations. I have a beast of a router and what I tend to connect to (airports, hotels, airplanes) have better than average equipment. People have had some luck by replacing their router. If it's software, the imminent 2.3.4. update may help.

There have been various postings on this. People with issues popped another carriers SIM in the phone and in a lot of cases the problem went away. Try replacing your SIM. If the phone's just not good reception wise in the areas you travel or on the network you use you may have to return it.

I've been using the LG charger from my G2X and it keeps the phone battery-positive using Nav and Bluetooth audio streaming. There's a thread dedicated to this somewhere, do a search.

I have the same headphones and am quite pleased with the output. I also stream Bluetooth in my car and the phone easily outperforms the G2 and G2X. There's a long thread discussing audio and a couple of folks using Shure's were getting different results. It might be a hardware issue with your particular phone. But, judging audio is subjective so what's good for me may not be for you.

There's an issue with the suspend process in 2.3.3. that drains the battery at idle. The imminent 2.3.4. update should correct this.
I also noted poor wifi signal. Changed my router to a better one and it fixed the issue, however I still have problems in my travels ( hotels, bars, airports ).
Regrading the navigation, I did a total of 2500km ( 2 long trips of 900 km each + other small and medium trips ) with the phone being in nav mode. I had the battery issue you described due to overheating, but as soon as I protected the phone from direct sunlight ( a small piece of paper over it ) or kept a small flow of air on it ( placed it near the AC vent and redirected the flow twoards it ) the issue got resolved. Using a 500mA car USB charger my phone stays cool at about 36 degrees C and the battery gets +1% every few mins ( navigation + wifi tethering on with Kies over wifi activated ). In regards to the software, I mainly use iGo or Copilot.
So solution: make sure you have a little airflow on your phone and a little space between the back of the phone and the phone holder. Satisfy these 2 conditions and you will eliminate the charging problems.

Thanks for that, mate. Just to say: my phone "says" it's charging in the car; but when I do a drive with the satnav, then unplug the phone, it hasn't actually been charging. Again, I'm not the only one with this problem (or feature).

Thanks for those suggestions. Really, though: why should that be necessary? It's all a bit Heath-Robinson, is it not? I don't have to put pieces of paper over other satnav devices, or lodge them in the a/c vents.
I may buy the official Samsung charger but there are people elsewhere who've had no luck with that.

Sat nav will max out the phones power draw, reducing charging to a trickle, it's just a case of taking out almost as much as you are putting in.
I find from using wifi analyser on a few devices what Samsung call two bars in signal strength, most other devices call 3.
Not sure why that is.

Well, I'm sorry, but I find it completely normal to say that some charger we got off eBay, third-party probably that's not even a brand name, isn't capable of feeding our next gen device that has not only a dual core processor, the most ram on the market on any phone, a GIANT screen, not enough dissipation space (for heat) to keep it thin as thin as thin. I'm worried about battery life as well, but oh well. It's the price we have to pay! hehe.

Sorry to hear this...but the problem isn't the "GS2" it's your specific GS2. The vast majority of users have maybe one of your problems, which either fixes it self, or fixed through an update. There are even more, who don't even have any of those problems.
I think that you have a faulty unit and if you are upset, get a replacement, because the GSII is one fine device and capable of doing all you need it to do.
Please read my last post for the correct answer to the satnav power supply problem. It has nothing to do with ventilation and everything to do with the type of charger you are using.
You could buy a 1000ma very expensive charger and it still might not charge your phone when under extreme load. Some chargers will only supply 500ma as that is the max that a usb socket on your motherboard is supposed to supply. Doing the mod I described earlier solves this.

I only make sure that the AC is blowing through the defrost holes also... the airflow required is minimum. This applies to all phones and even other dark colored gps devices I owned before... In the summer, the sun heats up the phone and/or gps device a lot. As a test, try leaving the phone in the cradle in the car ( under direct sunlight ) for an hour. The phone can be kept at idle, or even closed. It will heat up a lot... I remember I threw away a compact photo camera cause I forgot it on the dashboard for a day, in the summer (it was pretty much melted and very deformed)...
So a bit of common sense will fix the temperature issues... the charging problems appear due to the temperature issues. If the batter temp is above 50 degrees it will stop charging. When you keep the batter under 50 degrees, a 500mA decent charger will be more than enough to keep the phone running and slowly charge the battery.
