back up an tcpmp - Touch 3G General

hi to everybody, i've just bought a Jade. 2 questions:
1. does tcpmp work on jade?
2. Does somebody know a freeware soft to make a complete backup of the device? I'm looking for somenthing like the backup tool of winmobile 2003, with that you can keep a new device (doesn't care wich rom in already installed) and restore your backup, after this you will have your device not only with all your datas (contacts, appointments, notes, ecc) but you will have all the programs you had installed too, all the tweaks you set in registry will be restore. I'd like to find out a back up tool that make an "image copy" of the device.
Thanks in advance.
MAO

to 2: Look the HTC-website and find "Sprite Backup".
This tool make a full-backup from system.

thanks man!

to 2:
I've got better Results with SPB-Backup on my Elfin an Hermes
to 1:
test it, its work great on the most WM-Devices

I've tested tcpmp on my jade: no problem with installation, I see the icon in the programs page but when I tap on it the player doesn't start and a pop-un message write me off an error and to send the crash.txt file to the developer. So I have to say that tcpmp doesn' work.

Sprite BackUp is included in the Application CD, install both Software, 1 for your Jade and 1 for PC so you can backup your Jade either on your phone or your computer.

I also have the same error with TCPMP, Installation is successful and when I open the application crash.txt is created and asked to be sent to the developer. Is there any other good media player (free) which can be installed as an alternative to TCPMP

How to make Sprite Backup 3 work with XDA2??

can someone please help me to get sprite back up v3 to work on my xda2. my aim is to backup my device to my PC. it either freezez my xda2 or hard resets it!!!
thanks a lot
Only after I bought Sprite 3.0 I found out it doesn't work properly. In my case, V3.0 erased my SMS after a restore! Solution? According to Sprite SOftware, they working on it. In the meantime, this is what I did:
For the first Backup
- Make an executable (.exe) backup file and save it to Storage (permanent storage on your XDAII). It will be a slightly bigger file
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail option and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Prgogram Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup. You need to do the executable file only once
For daily backups, save them to a storage card.
- BEFORE you run the back up (UNselect e-mail opetion and click on the (+) sign next to System Data, then again on (+) File System and again on (+) Program Files.
- UNselect Arcsoft box
- Then run the backup.
To Restore
- Run the executable backup file first
- Then do a soft reset
- Run Sprite and restore form your last daily backup file
It anly sound akward, but it worked for me!
PS: You will loose your e-mail account settings and all its folders' contents. But I found that I could live with this. It's better than having to reinstall all software to your XDAII again!
..like walking on thin ice!
hey michael..thanks for the details.. but sprite backup seems to hate xda2..
is there a way to back up to pc with this workaround? can i use the same approach but pc as the destination?
any news when sprite will release the new version?
anyone knows of another backup sw that backs up xda2 to PC?
thanks
Hawk
I hate to be arguementative - but I am using Sprite Pocket Backup v.3 with my imate and it is working perfectly. It even restores my SMS!
Are you sure you are not using ver. 2.X which did have the SMS restore problem?
I've tried with my xdaII , the sms inbox was restored OK, but I have some problem after the backup restored. I never received SMS anymore.
don't know why....
so I never used it again.
i'm using imate with rom 1.72 and sprite backup v3
Hey Brian
Can u please give details about yr device, e.g rom etc. and installed applications.. i never got to to work on the imate. please give some details on if u were able to backup to pc?
anybody know of any program that backs up imate to pc?
thanks

On my MDA2 SpriteBackup crashes! (automatic backup timed at 23:55 everyday) Looks like some file is in use and Sprite is not able to backitup and the whole backup process is stopped. So on my MDA2 backup has NEVER finished!
I'm using backup in ActiveSync - I have it set to automatic mode - everytime I put my MDA2 into the cradle, it synchronizes with outlook and then does FULL BACKUP.
And I'm sure this kind of backup works well - I restored my MDA many times after hardreset from ActiveSync's backup and everything was always OK.
hawk -
Your second question first - Of course you know that ActiveSync can backup your PPC to your PC (Tools -> Backup/Restore). Also, Sprite Backup ver.3 can backup to your PC as well - it can install a tool in your system tray to run the Sprite Backup PC Service.
I had version 2.X of Sprite Backup and experienced the SMS service failing to receive messages after a restore. With ver. 3.0.0 I have actually restored my imate after an unintentional HR and SMS worked perfectly thereafter.
Now, for my configuration:
imate with ROM Ver. 1.72.00WWE
1GB SD card
VITO Voice Dialer
PHM Registry Editor
MS PocketStreets
m-possible Backgammon
HP Mobile Printing
Zendrui PocketZenPhone
Syntact GameBox
Sprite Software Sprite Backup
Sprite Software Space Detective
Sprite Software PocketMon
Spb Pocket Plus
Mobimate WorldMate Pro
MS Cubicle Chaos
Laridian Pocket Bible (with 10 Bible translations)
Laridian Daily Reader
Illium Software eWallet
Total Commander
Adobe Acrobat Reader 1.0
A.Khogo tAgenda
SSnap
IDiff
I also have the drivers for the Stowaway keyboard installed.
It's pretty well loaded!

What version? I'm using spritet 3 v1517 without issue. Email and SMS restore correctly. The only conflict I've found is using GPRS monitor.
I had the same problem with the earlier versions of Sprite Backup too. After restoration, my XDA will have a complete blackout on SMSs. So i have decided not to install it again.
BRosenow, is your Vito Voice Dialer the PE version? I can't seem to get the non-PE version to work tho.

Yes, it is Voice Dialer PE v3.0.
Sprite Backup
I'm using it with my XDA II and no problem. I restores everything as it was. Using Sprite Backup V3.0.0 build 1517.
I don't backup to my PC but to a SD card.
Regards,

whats the reason to backup to a pc using something like Sprite
over just using activesync's pc backup restore option ?
i understand the sd card backup but not why people use it on pc's
If I'm not wrong ActiveSync backup from PC gives problems with restore after a ROM upgrade.
Maybe that's the reason. I agree with you. It has no additional value.
Mark
I use Sprite to backup my imate to my laptop from time-to-time, just in case something were to happen to my SD backup (loose the SD card, backup files become corrupted, etc.). Considering the little time and storage space it takes, what's the harm in having a little insurance?
And I use the Sprite backup to PC because it takes about 2 min. for a full backup . . . can ActiveSync do that?
nah
with ms you get what you pay for since activesync is free is slow can be
a full backup prob take about 15->30min
i prefer to use the same program 1. to backup to sd card & pc for compatiblity reasons in order to exchange files if needed, 2. sprite does exe files 3. activesync may not restore to a newer rom properly.
the funny thing is some people are using sprite with no problem, others like me are just going thru hell to make it work.
on sprite's support they mention something about stopping some processes in windows\startup\
tried that too, didn't work.
can anyone diagnose the problem with the inconsistency of the results from one person to the other and definite solution?
Hawk
Maybe the ROM version that differs! Sprite Backup works for me fine. See my ROM version below with my signature.
My startup folder contains:
AFlashman, BTTrayCE, CFlashMan, CheckAutorun, ChgDFLnk, IA_Caller_ID, MMREG, NFlashMan, poutlook, stk, Symantec Antivirus, TFlashMan

Well . . . you need to be VERY selective of which files you restore after a ROM upgrade anyway. You cannot do a full restore (from a full backup) after a ROM upgrade, because .exe and .dll files (and others) will be restored, replacing the newer versions. This leaves the device in a state that is somewhere between the two ROM versions and will cause all sorts of problems.
You should only restore documents, email and personal databases - not system data.

How to restore apps/ActiveSync/etc. after ROM upgrade?

I can't seem to figure out how people restore their apps, data, ActiveSync, etc. after updating their ROMs. It seems like people on this site replace their ROMs a few times a year at least, and with all the cleverness required to follow all the ROM issues, surely you can't all be manually re-installing every single app every time, etc. Are there some tools I don't know about that are useful for backing up/restoring files before/after ROM burn? Every backup program I see says you must not use it to restore after ROM update (which I understand, since you don't want to restore old versions of many key files). But surely someone could create a backup/restore app which knows which things should NOT be restored.
Thanks!
I do rom upgrades quite frequently, now I can have my device back with my settings and programs installed in around 10 minutes, here's what I did:
1)Install registry workshop on your desktop computer, this program allows you to remotely browse / export the registry on the PocketPC and compare current regitry settings on PocketPC with a previously dumped registry file.
2) Install RegDiff on your desktop computer, it allows you to generate .reg files out of two exported registry dumps done by registry workshop.
3) Spend a few hours going setting-by-setting and exporting the registry after changing each setting, compare and generate .reg file for that. Keep in mind that sometimes you need to power off the device for a while or soft reset for the registry setting to be permanently stored.
4) Once you have all the .reg files for your settings combine them in a single .reg file
5) Use WinCE Cab Manager to combine the cabs of all the programs you install, set the registry settings, and put shorcuts to all applications into the right places. This is the most "time consuming" part of the process.
Finally I end up with 2 big cab files:
- First one is around 9Mb which I install on pocketpc memory, this includes all today screen plugins, plus Net CF 2.1 and some registry settings (mostly WM5 settings and preferences from the today plugins)
- Second one is around 25Mb which i install on storage card, this includes all the other 3rd party apps I like and registry settings for those apps.
What I do after hard reset or rom upgrade: Install the two cab files, setup mail accounts and mms manually and use directpush to sync all my contacts and calendar items again.
The process of exporting all the registry settings is a PITA, but it is worth spending the time if you're going to switch roms frequently.
Look for an app called Sprite Backup.

Yup, Sprite is the easiest. Be warned, however, that it isn't able to restore PIM databases over the AKU3 upgrade. See my Backup Bible, where I;ve explained this all.
Wow, thanks. That's a lot of work to get things set up! Clearly worth it if you can re-install everything in 10 minutes, though.
I started to investigate your recommendations, installed Cab Manager, and see how you use that.
How do you get the cabs if the install isn't directly via cab? In other words, if the install is initiated via ActiveSync, then are the necessary cabs always found under the Program Files\ActiveSync directory?
As for Sprite Backup, it looks great, and maybe that would be enough for me for now. I wasn't clear (I did search through and skim the Backup Bible and the WM5 backup software comparisons but couldn't find exactly where it talked about the issue regarding AKU3) is the PIM issue a known bug? Or some limitation/problem related to new security or something?

If it's installed via activesync you can find them there, but generally what I do is extract the cab files from the exe using orange in Linux, don't know if there's a windows equivalent.
pof,
Don't know if you ever ActiveSync since you use Linux, but is there a way to NOT break your ActiveSync by upgrading your ROM? I thought I tried once, years ago, to set the device name back to the original name and ActiveSync still didn't recognize it as the old partnership.

If it doesn't recognize it, just delete the old partnership and recreate / reconfigure it . It's just some seconds.

Saving PIM-data for Upgrade

Hello out there!
I own a unbranded HTC P4350 currently running WM5 .
To ensure that my device will read the MicroSDHC-card (8GB would be awesome!) I want to upgrade the OS to WM 6.
I already downloaded he official ROM-Update for HTC, but:
How can I backup personal data like
- calender
- contacts
- tasks
and
- short messages(!)
quite effective? (Without Outlook perhaps?)
Like: Backup on PC, upgrade ROM, run backup => everything normal.
Although I don't synchronize my PPC with my desktop PC, I installed Outlook, to try it this way.
But only the first three items were synchonized. :-(
I don't know how to backup my SMS und MMS.
I searched the internet including this forum, but found no note about this issue.
Oh! Thank in advance for your answers, of course!
try using a program called pimbackup by some guy on this forum. think his name was dotfred. do a search and make sure you use the latest version. it's an exe, so you run it from your pocketpc. make your backup, then update, reinstall, and run the backup.
Thank you. I tried this software additionally for safety reasons.
But now I have another huge problem... :-((
But I better open a new thread for that.

Clean ROM !!!
This ROM is based on official HTC WWE 1.25.405.1 / 5.2.1623 OS (build 18129.0.4.5) ROM and does not include radio.
First you must flash HardSPL from here thanks Olipro.
After unzipping the file you have downloaded, you must run from your desktop PC the ROMUpdateUtility.exe with your device in bootloader (pres and hold camera button and do a soft reset) with the battery above the 50%. Follow the instructions on the screen.
The ROM is fast, stable with some registry tweaks and modifications, includes only the essential files.
Recommended for experienced users who can easily install their favorite programs.
The device starts with 148,54 from 152,34 MB storage and ~71 from 100,77 MB programs memory.

Even your Registry tweaks saves me some effort. I also use a phone skin that I found through the Eten forum (zpleaf.cab) and some other registry edits, but your Butterfly ROM is perfect.
Your Splash screen is way more visually interesting than the original from HTC as well.
Dancing with the ROMs!!!

OK, here's where I'm at with this excellent ROM:
1) I confirm that Oxios memory does *not* work with the P3650. Installs ok, and all registry entries/values are the same as those on a WM6 device where the program does work, but it will simply not start
2) Both Sprite Backup 6.1.0 and Spb Backup 1.6.3 do *not* work with the P3650. Both install ok, but Sprite just says "unexpected error" and Spb complains it can't read the sfx module (whatever that is). Spb Clone also falls over with a pathetic message "cannot generate cloned image". Suprisingly, Sunnysoft Backup 4.0.0.2 does work (it's the only one here not specifically aimed at WM6 !)
3) The P3650 GPS works ok with later programs (not just SatNav), but earlier programs (ie. before WM5) have problems, because they need a hardware port to connect to (they are unaware of "Windows automatic management") and the P3650 GPS chip does not supply a hardware port for them
4) phone (inc 3G/HSDPA), BT, WLAN, GPS, SDHC (8Gb card) all work ok
5) I've made some inroads into building my installation, and Storage stands at ~143Mb, with RAM ~68Mb
6) speed/response are very, very good
Maybe this device will do ... I'm still some way from the "entertainment" section (not very important to me) but progress is steady now I'm sure of at least 1 working backup/restore program

Yes, but unhappily Sprite 6.1.0 build 2192 is the one that falls over on me. However, Sunnysoft 4.0.0.2 has proved reliable.
Next step - and I'm sure this is not your Butterfly ROM: some programs simply will not install on the card; install messages say they do, but the card exe files are somehow corrupted, minus their icon, and very slow to directory list. Such programs do install OK on Storage, but I cannot find a pattern yet as to which ones show this behaviour. I have analysed the card (8Gb SDHC) for bad sectors, both on the device and on my PC, but this is not the cause.
Examples so far ? VM Network Browser, Engineering Calc, SciCalc, Pocket Mechanic, Resco Explorer. All of these installed on the card in the X500 and P3600i WM6 and worked without fuss. At this point, I think this a P3650 characteristic that I do not understand. Perhaps it is tied into how the device uses RAM/Flash: I've been using SKTools to check RAM leakage periodically, but this has been tiny so far (~50Kb) compared to both the X500 and P3600i (~2000Kb).
I also feel the Radio ROM is buggy - sometimes works at g speeds, sometimes not, this seems random. I vaguely remember a post about last November attributing the late retail release of the device to HTC having large problems with the Radio ROM ... maybe so ?

Later ... I have no real idea at all why this worked, but the problem described above was steadily worsening (time to kick the garden gnome !!), so in desperation:
1) I noted one such installed program on the card that was misbehaving (no icon, slow and corrupted behaviour)
2) removed the card from the P3650 and stuck it into my X500 to see if *that* device saw it as corrupted. Nope - program perfect and ran ok
3) put the card back in the P3650 and all the bad behaviour was gone !!
No real clue, maybe the X500 treatment changed an essential byte ? I'll leave it to the experts, I'm just adding programs mechanically now
Can you send me one or two of these programs ?
panosha said:

Yes, of course - some are simple freeware (like EngCalc http://www.freewareppc.com/calculator/engineeringcalculator.shtml) but the problem is gone. It was not your ROM, that is brilliant !!
I put the card in the X500 device and installed one of these programs. It installed and ran perfectly. So I transferred the card back to the P3650 and everything worked perfectly again (Sprite, Spb Backup & Clone all work now)
My best guess is that installation in the X500 re-wrote some essential byte in the card FAT ...
I am grateful for your ROM, I am building a very useful device with it
Does this ROM still have the Touch keypad? Not the Touch keyboard.
No Touch keypad.
Do you know where it can be found?
Can anyone please explain to me what SAPSettings is? And what does it mean when radio is removed? What's the point of radio?
Radio waves are used to transmit voice and data between the device and the networks. Without radio, you've paid a lot of money for not a lot!

[APP] Windows Mobile Package Manager

Windows Mobile Package Manager 0.0.2
Windows Mobile Package Manager will help you to create software bundles and install them on WM device unattended.
Currently, it's only early pre-alpha software, to ensure that concept is working. So, expect software crashes
Description:
The life of WM device, is hard. Constant ROM flashing, re-install everything, or recover from backup. Owning WM device for an year, I really hate to reinstall everything after new ROM flash, so i decided to make software that will capture the essence of "your device":
With this application you can create package, that will do those things:
Install software that you like
Restore application configuration / settings (via registry)
Copy your files to device (video / pictures / etc.)
How it works:
Every .cab file, have information about itself. What it's name, how it should be installed and where. This application WILL MODIFY .cab information, so that it will be installed to the path, that you want. This is done, to allow unattended installation. (maybe you have a better solution than wceload.exe /noaskdest /noui /nodelete)

Registry import, is almost complete, file copy should be simple to do.
It will generate .cab file for your .reg file. This was the easy way to implement this. But there is a drawback.. it does not allow non-ASCII characters in registry section of the .cab setup.
Updated to 0.0.2
Changes:
* Added registry support.
* Added file copy support.
* Updated usage video.
Feel free to try it

hm, can you attach your .reg file that was not parsed correctly?
did you by any chance exported the whole device registry (ie registry backup?)
Provisioning xml files support
Would you add support for parsing provisioning xml files?
Great app! Are you planning to make a mobile version (for making changes 'on the fly')? Another superb option for mobile version would be backup! For backing up current registry entries (specified in a ini file - something like in this app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=491175).

2. I understand you but don't agree, that it defeats the purpose of this app. I would say it extends its usage (I can imagine, that I need it, but don't have my laptop with me... and this isn't only imagination - I already use some tools to do that). No doubts, that on a PC you can make it more comfortably, but...
3. I know and I use CeRegEditor often, but when I can use just one app... Another thing I can make a real up-to-date backup (many apps have their settings in registry and settings can change from time to time). This option would be great specially for the mobile version.
4. And what about restoring PIM backup (e.g. from PPCPIMBackup)?
I am a flashing junkie and I'm searching for such app for a long time (I wish I could make my own app, but I'm not a programmer).
I hope you understand 'my' english

2. Yes, but it's not the main use-case It's just adds additional overhead for the development, as you have to sync the mobile client and the PC client. If for example mobile client is used only by 2-3 people
3. I'm already thinking for a way to do that Probably via ActiveSync. So, for example in the UI you could define, what registry keys should be backuped, save this info in some config, and re-apply to different device. Again ,when you creating package, you can attach your WM device, and get those registry keys on the fly to the app. Something like.. live migration from WM device
4. Yes, this is good idea Again, goes well with the described above
Yes, I also like to try new ROMs.. and also was searching for something like this.. or at least the automatic .cab installation Didn't find app that suits me.. so decided to make one
I got some errors by restoring (copying) folders: e.g. "Could not find file 'Storage Card\CopyApplication Data' (when I want to restore Application Data folder).
Is it a bug or is just by me?
thx
Many Thanks
Thanks for this wonderfull application
I know there are some other auto installation programmes, but I find this program very simple and usefull. Please continue to develop it.
I only try software install software, not registry nor file transfer.
Up to now, I found a small bug :
During software installation (nearly 14 items) process, the information at the info page disappeared at the middle of installation. But after the installation finished, "Installation Finished" explanation displayed.
Could you please include a SETTING Page to select which programmes will be installed. For now, it can only be used during the first full installation. According to me, Selection option will be very usefull and make your wonderfull programme better and usage
Again my thanks and hoping to see new versions.

1. you mean, that during instalation on your device, the screen of app does not refresh? This could happen, as the instalation process takes all available CPU. I was thinking about making re-draw in the high priority thread, but then.. it's only drawing pictures and not adding value.. so it was left as it is, to give more resource for application installatin.
2. yes, this could be done

Hi again,
Yes, the screen of app does not refresh. So I could not see which programme was installing at that time
Thanks for accepting my request.
Cool thanks!
Any New Version please
Any New Version. Waiting it
Sorry, not yeat
Thanks, I really like this because UC didn't work well for me. It is really nice and it almost looks like an official app. Great work!
Thanks
This is a great concept. As a "mad ROM flasher" this will save me lots of time and head aches. Looking forward to seeing the development of this APP. Keep up the great work!
