Pressing the <back> button (the usb cable connected to a vista pc) "FASTBOOT USB" appeared and vista asked me for the driver (Android 1.0) that I've found in the 1.5 framework directory.
Hoping those information are useful (and my English is human-readable...).

YOU FOUND FASTBOOT!!! Which could be the key to gaining root on the magic. I'm a G1/Dream user. Fastboot is a very convenient feature that allows you to directly flash the phone through USB. On the G1, the phone ships without Fastboot capabilities. I needed to root the phone first and then install a Fastboot capable SPL. If the magic ships with Fastboot installed, then it is completely possible to install a custom recovery.img console directly to the /recovery partition.

I can confirm I also get the same thing. In addition if you press the <Back> button to go to FastBoot mode (no USB cable connected) you get another menu:
<Vol Down> HBoot Mode
<Send> Reset Device
<Action> Restart to HBoot
<Menu> Power Down
I did not have a USB cable connected, but will try this later when I get home.
Having been on the Fast Boot screen, pressing the <Vol Down> takes you back to where you started except that pressing the <Back> button for 2/3 secs and releasing causes the phone to check the SD card.
"SD checking...." and proceeds to look on the SD card for several image files. Sorry it happens a little too quickly to register what the files are.
Hoping this is useful to those in the know
it actually checks the sd card without you holding down "back", it just takes a while to start doing it.

Seems like everything in TIM version is newer than Vodafone. Could you try this command from Terminal to see how much RAM you have?

final steps
If your Flash chip type is G4, you can use ENG V1.21UK rom to update, I have uploaded the rom to Yahoo.com mail box.
I have changed my 6965 CHT ver to ENG ver successfully.
You can login yahoo mail box by using [email protected] as id and 69656965 as password.
Pls note not to delete the rom as others might need it too.
Flsah method:
1. Sync your mobil with PC by ActiveSync4.5 or up
2. Double click the downloaded update rom programme.
3. Click upgrade button and wait for 8-10 minutes
4. Done.

DO NOT USE that way.Surely, your phone will become a brick. That will change Product ID with invalid code and you will never restore SW for radio ROM .

- Android SDK installed on PC.
- USB driver installed.
- started "CMD" and give command:
fastboot boot cm-recovery-1.4.img
- Now I've maked a nandroid backup.
- Connected to USB and copy nandroid map to my PC.
- Formatted sdcard.
- Placed cm-recovery-1.4.img and update.zip to my SDcard.
- Started fastboot on my Magic.
- fastboot boot cm-recovery-1.4.img
- Wipe/reset factory.
- Apply update.zip.
Now my phone is doing the update and says everything is OK. When the update finisched I press restart. On startup only the Vodafone logo displayed. After 30 minutes only logo.
Whats going wrong?
I've read something about wrong spl package? Someone know this issue?
Also when I do the command adb devices there are no device found. When I check my Device manager on the PC I see an Android Phone and the drivers where installed correctly.

Rooting HTC Magic on OSX
I am so confused. I'm using Mac OSX and I think I followed everything that needs to be done based on the guide found on Full Update Guide - G1/Dream/Magic32A Firmware to CyanogenMod. But when I get to step 5 under Installation, I'm "command not found" error on Terminal. I hope there's a step-by-step or screen-by-screen tutorial on this, starting from installing the SDK. Sigh
Did you flash the DRC83_defanged.zip first? You need that for CM4 ROMs.
So here I go.
I've been at this for a few days now, and made little to no progress other than further identifying what I believe the cause of my troubles is.
I had this phone rooted / S-off'ed previously, but had the dreaded M4G2DE eMMC die on me.
So I shipped my phone away and got it back (covered under warranty, with the "VOID" sticker in the battery compartment removed to boot!)
Now, however, I'm stuck in trying to downgrade. I've followed the guides here and here, re-made my goldcard 2-3 times, and re-tried the process a few times as well.
I've checked the md5 sum of my PC10IMG.zip, which matches the listed one of "2ff42897cd27e0db425a2cf36c8bd078" from the second link, and regardless of what I do, I seem to run into the same issue.
Upon booting into the bootloader, the phone will scan PC10IMG.zip, verify it, then generate the following:

The download is flaw...your antivirus ate Zergrush from the tools>bin folder. That is what is used to get temproot and set the main version lower. Make sure that u disable every AV soft in your PC and then re download the Hack Kit from here: http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74l

You must turn off all anti viruses progrom on you pc and try again

Thankyou so so much(mghboy). It worked. I however has to install a ROM from microSD as the gingerbread didnt really work. But thanks again.
