Another battery thread... - G1 General

I didn't want to make a thread about this until I've had some time to test. But has anyone with v1.5 noticed that the battery drains noticeably faster? I've been on it for over a week, hoping it would "calibrate" itself, but it still seems like it drains faster. This is not a rant, I just want to know if anyone else experiences this.

There is a thread about this in the developer forum.

What I've learned after owning the HTC Magic for 3 months

Well im new to this forum, more a user of "howardforums" but since ive been using android i have found this the proper place to be. Before i begin id just like to say thank you all for the great information posted here, been a great help so far and has made my experience using android all that much better.
I've gone through loads of information regarding the battery life and the overall speed of the HTC magic and have come up with a few opinions of my own. Mind you these are just my opinions or findings rather from owning the device and using it. Nothing here is a scientific fact.
Some things you should know before hand.
1. Im currently running the latest version of the MYHero rom for my 32A
2. I have tested all the soon to mentioned things on "Cyanogens" latest rom as well.
I read so many times before hand that having a Task killer on the phone was essential to the experience and all that. Now no disrespect to anyone using one or that thinks its important but i wish i would have never even downloaded one. I read a post online saying that everything would run much faster and battery life would be better if we didnt use one so i gave it a go.
And what do you know.. so far its been 2 weeks and i have no task killers installed and the performance has been GREAT! I really couldn't believe it and felt really stupid for a moment Trust me, if your phone is slow or laggy or the battery is depleting faster than normal i believe that that is mostly related to a bad application that you downloaded. As some apps poll data for no reason in the background. I only have the essentials installed that i use on a daily basis.
Battery : I now am getting pretty reasonable battery life out of the HTC Magic. Maybe 22 hours running with some heavy use.
I have the brightness at 50 %. Network on 2g and i turn off the mobile data when i dont need my emails pushed to me through Gmail. I also make about 2 hours worth of phone calls and send off 30-40 texts. As well as Gtalking for about an hour. Light web surfing depending on what i need to know.
My advice after trying everything would be to keep email on push if thats what you want ofcourse and just set everything else like facebook etc to poll less frequently. I dont know about you but 22 hours of battery life on a smart phone is pretty reasonable in my book. At least with whats out there. The only phone i know of that has a better battery is the Blackberry which i own for work but i hate it
Well that is the end of my first post here and i hope that it helps anyone out there.
Cheers.. Feel free to leave comments or ask anything.

Display Use bug on CyanogenMOD ? (Battery Related)

I noticed when I go into battery use on Cyanogen and check whats eating up my resources, display is normally like 60%
But when I switch roms to Enomther for example with the same usuage, the display is always around 20-30%..
Whats going on
Is there a bug on CM?
Seriously. Do we really need another battery thread? I think you've posted in on almost every one of them. If your going to help, you'll need to offer up a whole more detail and your findings if you're going to get anywhere. I'm not trying to give you a hard time. It's just an observation.

Insanely improved battery life in dk28

So i flashed the stock leak to 2 of my coworkers phones a few days ago and their battery life went up BIG TIME..now i flashed it to mine + installed EE.
last night when i got home from the bar and passed out i left go chat running all night and when i woke up my battery was at 75% - with go chat running for 8 hours. normally my phone would be dead. Im really, really impressed with the improvements in the DK28..
Anyone else seeing similar results?
Why not post in the EE thread?!
What's EE when I was on dk28 my 3g radio was trying to upload constantly and killed my battery in record time. So I'm not running it anymore only because of that. If this EE thing can bring my battery life back to normal I'll gladly give dk28 another try.

I'm surprised theres no sticker for a guideline on what to post on Development, though I guess common sense is supposed to be a factor.
Development!

What exactly are you developing? Is this a rom or did you really make a general post in the development area?
He was just spamming the development area with garbage

I have noticed the exact opposite w/ DK28... I was running DK05 before and had great battery life, now w/ DK28 its back to just a hair better than it was Stock.
Although this is in the wrong section I also noticed much better battery life with DK28.

I have had much better battery life as well. No where near the advertised specs but significantly better than DI18.
can a mod plz move this so i can stop spamming this forum?
LOL. I'm definitely not seeing these results.
My battery life lasts me pretty much most of the day off the charger with some heavy use here and there and I'm still on DK17 ViperROM 2.6 with auto brightness on and a few widgets/notifications every 3-4 hours.
Does your gps work going that way? And if its much better battery life ill have to try doing it. As for those saying it is spamming, it may be but instead of trying to act like you have power actually contribute to the thread.
There are so many threads like this. Can we get a mod up in here?

What's EE?
I love when people have nothing to do but complain about other people posting in the wrong section..... its very upsetting ain't it

Wow, complain about it more so it keeps getting bumped...... I actually like seeing things like this because it just may more easily help someone in choosing a suitable rom. In a hour it'll be on the next couple of pages and you would have forgotten about this thread DISASTER anyways...

Epic Experience.....a rom.
With DK28 and EE I have had 26 hours of battery life, the first time I have had over 15 hours ever with my Epic. I am honestly comfortable walking a round without worrying about where I can plug my charger in at.
Threads like these (including their responses) are why post count doesn't matter.
Please post questions in General section.

Battery Life Testing - Kernel + Rom Combo's

Iv always considered battery life a very important factor in my purchasing of a phone and was one of the big reasons i moved from my Desire HD to the Nexus S (amongst many others). However having been on the android scene for a while im used to tinkering with kernels and roms etc and due to the new battery graph in gingerbread im now able to make direct comparisons rom by rom and kernel by kernel to see how they all differ. This is all shown + explained below.
First id like to explain my method;
I install the rom and kernel with the same apps I always use and charge the phone fully until i am about to go to sleep. I then unplug the phone and leave it in the exactly the same place on my desk with exactly the same settings (sync intervals etc) and i kill all apps before i leave it just to make sure the test is fair.
In the morning i then take a screen shot of the battery life over the period of usually 8 hours and will upload this for you to see. I then look at the over-night battery drain as a comparison on how good battery life is on specific roms and kernels.
Justification - Many of you may be thinking who cares about standby battery life? I care about the battery when im using it!?
Well although that's valid there are many reasons i have taken this approach;
1. It is completely fair i.e. no individual differences such as 'im a heavy user' but we all have different definitions of a 'heavy user'. This is eliminated by the fact the phone is not used and thus the same every time (no individual differences)
2. If a phone has severe battery drain during sleep general knowledge should dictate that battery drain should increase when the screen is on, cpu is working and your syncing your facebook wall, thus a direct correlation with sleep battery drain and usage drain should be apparent.
Therefore i have decided over the next few days/weeks etc i will upload on a regular basis a screenshot of the battery drain over night, along with the battery use details and screen on time etc etc. In addition to the rom and kernel info and i hope that over time this proves to be a very useful thread.
I have been doing this over the last few days on a less strict system and there have been some VERY interesting results which i will upload over the next few days.
(Just a final note iv never really done anything like this on xda before so if its a stupid idea then please tell me now so i dont waste my time doing it, however if people are really interested please let me know and il make sure i do my best!!)
Thanks for reading my extremely long post!

SCREENSHOT 1: This was using modacos custom rom r10 and the kernel that comes with it, i had quite a short sleep (about 6 hours) but the curve pretty much shows what the point im trying to make is. The battery life is great!!
SCREENSHOT 2: This is CM7 Nightly build 27# with Netarchy's latest 1.2.1 kernel and although i didnt use the screen once of charge for a few minutes as you can see once the screen was off battery life barely decreased and was over a long period of time.
If anyone wants me to test specific combos please let me know.
I'm actually looking forward to reading your results.

Yep, this would actually be pretty useful. Good luck and good work!
i'm a sucker for these types of tests, always love doing them and seeing the results. post soon!
I like others will be keeping an interested eye on your findings.
Uploading pictures of modaco r10 with it's own original kernel today. Its an interesting result!

I'm interested too.
Can u try modaco r10 with Netarchy 1.2.1 kernel.

I'd be interested in seeing CM7, just whatever nightly build you manage to catch.
I don't think that result will give you precise result.
I found that statistic is wrong sometimes.
It is better to measure using "play video loop".
So, find a movie, set to the same brightness and play in loop?

Unfortunately that will not give you how well the rom does while it is idle.
I'm really looking forward to your results. My only issue with this phone is the battery life is terrible. I ordered an extended battery off Ebay 3 weeks ago and have yet to receive it. Never ordering anything from Hong Kong again!

What were you using before that you consider this phone to have bad battery life? By far this phone has the best battery life of any Android device I've owned. If you want bad battery life, get an Evo. That is horrific battery life.

I am looking forward to the rest of these, however just a quick question. What was your battery use like in that situation with the stock ROM? Just for reference, because I'm thinking I might switch to modaco soon. Thanks!
More soon
Iv got a few more screenies but it seems i may have to end this thread prematurely. Its the SNS or 2.3 but idle battery usage for me is pretty much identical no matter what the kernel or rom (il upload a CM7 + Netarchy 1.2.1 shot top op). This was unexpected on my behalf because with my DHD kernels and roms had a big impact on idle battery consumption. I have noticed however that without a full wipe when changing some kernels such as with M r10 idle battery life can increase drastically. I will continue for the next few days and if i dont see any big changes i may move method to a video loop or something of the sort.
Interesting find
I found out something today that may interest may of you. I was messing around with the sleep profiles on SetCpu with netarchys kernel and i found that its better to leave the range from 100-800 than 100-400 or less. This i believe is because when the phone is asleep and carries out a process it will be forced to clock to the maximum of 400mhz and then stay at that speed for 10 seconds, instead of say going up to 800mhz for 1-2 seconds to complete the same process. So a tip to you would be set your profile to 100-800mhz conservative and see what you get!

This kinda enforces the point that SetCPU is useless for the NS unless you really want to overclock...
Any battery saving tactics used buy lowering screen off profiles are counteracted by the system process;( So i think in the context of battery life you are probably better to not use SetCPU

I would definitely move to a video loop or some other 'heavy use' task because when you think about it, not too much can really be changed when almost no power is being used in the first place.
You could also just mention your general feeling for the battery life of each rom, because quite often that is what I go by as my usage varies depending on a range of things (school day or weekend etc) .

Could you please test modaco r10 with Netarchy's latest 1.2.1 kernel ?
I would love to see the difference between modaco's default kernel vs netarchy's kernel.
On CM nightly 13, I just went 11 hours and I'm at 90%. That's 1/2% an hour. Not bad. That is with stock kernel.

Battery issues

Hi,
Not sure if anyone can advise.
I've got myself a DHD originally on Froyo but recently upgraded to Gingerbread. From day 1, been able to get about 14hours of light use while draining the battery about 70%
Was hoping for better performance with Gingerbread but doesn't appear to be much different. At the moment this week I've been taking it off charge about 7am, but 2pm it drops to about 80%, thats with either wifi on 15min sleep or on constant. Few texts, couple of Facebook checks, and couple updates on Storm8 games, so not a great deal from what I can tell. Yesterday I went to a customer site and was texting a bit in the afternoon while browsing net on and off and by 5.30pm this had dropped to about 40%. Bluetooth was on for 30mins while in car and quick call to missus and got home with 30%.
Trouble is I'm comparing it to my missus' new Desire S which can go a couple of days on one charge and loads of posts on Android Forums about people that are getting a lot more and better with 2.3. Feel something must be really wrong with my battery.
I've tried the tweak with fully charging, turning off plugging back in and waiting till green but couldn't get it green.
Not sure if there are any other techniques I can try or someone can confirm exact details so I can try again, and whether it does make a difference or my case seems correct.
Many thanks
So the battery life is the same as on froyo if I understood you correctly? A rom can't make any huge improvements so as long as the battery life is the same I would be happy. Regarding the difference between the DHD and the DS you have to remember that the DS has a smaller screen and a bigger battery.
