I was going to get an Htc G1 until I saw this android version! - G1 General

Samsung has an Android based phone with 5 megapixel with glash, and 8gig built in memory!! http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=4285

Slide-out keyboard or onscreen only?

That phone makes me horny.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/samsung-i7500-oled-handset-powered-by-android-dreams/

only going to be released in europe
hopefully itll find its way here through ebay

It looks like softkey only. Its to thin for a slide out. I will not get a phone without a slide out any more.

oh hell yea.......
love it!!

Phone looks good but lack of physical keyboard means I won't be getting it 8GB internal memory is friggin sweet though. *waves fist at HTC*

Still not gonna upgrade to anything less than a VGA or higher res screen.

+1... I've never had any luck with samsungs. Phone does look good though.

thats what I was just about to say... it will get nowhere if they dont put there capacitive screen.

I thought capacitive screens were mandatory on android...
Perhaps I'm wrong,

No slide out keyboard- camera may be nice but I type way more than I take pictures. And 16gb microSD card on G1 is already way more than enough for me. I prefer the trackball as well.
I see nothing really of value with the Samsung, but it is nice to see more Android handsets making their way out. If it has headphone jack, that may be a big plus.

I guess what excited me was 5mp camera with LED flash. I can't take pictures for **** with the Dream, even with SnapPhoto.
The Dream's full keyboard is nice, but also makes the phone feel somewhat flimsy from the separation of the screen and the keyboard. The creaking noises and stuff make it hard to sell people on this platform in general. Having something sexy like the Samsung and the Magic will broaden the Android market I'm thinking -- people just want iPhone style these days. Sad, but true.
Always has been the case though -- Apple has dominated the "Style" factor, while other platforms trounce it on functionality, extensibility, compatibility, etc.

It does sound awesome, but you can now get the G1 for $99 from Sam's Club (with 2-year agreement) and I am sure that is way less than what this Samsung will cost you...and really, does the difference in price justify the ever so slight improvement on hardware...not really.

The 8MB on-board memory is a pretty significant thing here. Perhaps when more phones have such a large amount of memory, it will allow much larger apps on the Android Market.

I dont care about the memory because sd cards are cheap. But even though I hate the dream's keyboard I would still want one

no physical keyboard = no physical reason to buy

This got me curious. W/o the physical keyboard, how do you type in recovery console?

Are you satisified with your G2?

Sorry for the seemingly inane thread, but hear me out.
I'm considering importing the G2 so that means returning it would be impossible. A few questions before pulling the trigger:
- Are there any showstopping problems I should know about with this device?
- Any features you felt disappointed not to have, such as HDMI?
- Overall, do you feel like the addition of the keyboard is worth it? Is the extra bulk (thickness, weight) a worthy tradeoff? Do the keys feel too cramped?
- Does the phone feel too heavy? Can you listen to music while jogging without it feeling way too bulky?
Thanks for helping me and apologies for making you fill out a survey like this
i really like the phone, ive had a couple of them to compare. its really fast... with the stock rom, small compared to my hd2, they keyboard is going to take a little getting used to(im a custom to the touch pro), the hardware button for the camera is nice, and its native OS is droid.

I love it now that I over clocked it. The fact I can't get fully skinned roms is annoying but we already got overclock which has made this phone zooooom zooom. Fasted phone I have ever used.

The only real issue I've encountered thus far is the loose hinge that closes when you're typing in bed, for example, but I've found that holding the phone a little higher so that your fingers are on the sides of the screen keeps it open. Minor annoyance, to be sure.
Other than that, this phone is ****ing awesome. Personally I like the weight, but objectively it's quite heavy compared to other phones. Overall, I highly recommend it.
Honestly i think the build quality is a little inconsistent, which is common when a phone first launches. I would be very nervous if you cant exchange it if something was wrong. Fortunately for me i work at a retail store that sells phones so I can fully inspect a phone before I buy it. I checked out 3 G2's and only 1 of them was good enough to buy, the other 2 had dust under the screen. My hinge is loose as well but im not bothered by it.
I would probably wait for a few models runs until htc has these things ironed out.
i'll let you know i get mine today (swithching from Touch pro 2)
- Are there any showstopping problems I should know about with this device?
not really, the device is great, the hspa coverage (for me) is spotty in areas i frequent, thus the only showstopper (for me)
- Any features you felt disappointed not to have, such as HDMI?
number row on keyboard. sure hdmi out woudl be nice but a lot of things would be. possible rgb leds (unless thats been debunked/solved) around the trackpad and charger led
- Overall, do you feel like the addition of the keyboard is worth it? Is the extra bulk (thickness, weight) a worthy tradeoff? Do the keys feel too cramped?
i like they keyboard, i find that i actually like swype but havent composed a big, long email yet. i dont really like how the keyboard doesnt feel centered and G/H are slightly to the right which is opposite of coming from a G1 with it being to the left due to the chin. the enter key i feel should be a row down but these are all things you can get accustomed to. the spacing and such are good. im not a huge fan of the hinge since when opened it feels a bit wobbly. i dont doubt its sturdy overall just feels "cheap". its like having a door on a ferrari rattle when you close it or something (you wouldnt complain but you wish it wouldnt do that).
- Does the phone feel too heavy? Can you listen to music while jogging without it feeling way too bulky?
the heft is both good and bad. it feels executive like a premium device. the downside is it might be more prone to those accidental drops or something. i dont mind the weight but if i had a pick id wish it would weigh nothing and be 1"x1" but have the display of an ipad. of course these things dont add up.
overall i might take mine back, not for the device at all however. i do like it, its snappy its clean it does what i want (wish the camera was a bit better but again, not a dealbreaker). the only issue i have is with signal, which isnt device related.
- Are there any showstopping problems I should know about with this device? Not really, I get weak signal in my apt, but once they release wifi calling that will be fixed. I also have gotten used to the higne and the reboots seem to have stopped for me.
- Any features you felt disappointed not to have, such as HDMI?
Nope, I came from an iPhone to this phoen though, so I was feature light to begin with
- Overall, do you feel like the addition of the keyboard is worth it? Is the extra bulk (thickness, weight) a worthy tradeoff? Do the keys feel too cramped?
This is my first keyboard phone and its awesome! pefect thickness, and the keyboard feels great.
- Does the phone feel too heavy? Can you listen to music while jogging without it feeling way too bulky?
Nah it feels solid, I would run with it, but I'd get some kind of neoprene sleeve/holster for it.

1, not with mine in particular, dead pixels and a weak hinge would really piss me off though.
2. You know that is one thing I would have liked but not needed. I play emulators ALOT on my phone and it would have been very nice to be able to hook up two wii controllers and bust out some old snes games with my wife on the tv.
3. Extra bulk? You need to start lifting weights if its to heavy for you. Keys are very very nice as long as I cut my nails, I had nails that hadnt been cut for two weeks or so and it was annoying. Females probably wouldnt like it, maybe you just need to get used to it.
4. Bulky? Naw I love it, it just feel cheap and weak.
Well, I just sent mine back to Tmobile for a new one.
Hinge became looser over the few weeks of owning it.
Phone would reboot on it's own from time to time.
Force Closed on apps all the time.
Signal would come in and out.
Don't let what I said scare you. I'm sure I just got a really bad apple, err... phone. I love the phone very much, and hopefully the new one works better. It's a really fast little ****er, no lie!
It does what every phone does and it doesn't do what its not meant to do "drive your car? Hopefully in 5 more years" As 3g or hspa, its deffenitely faster than the iphone 4 or any 3g phone "I live next to philly so I get good service, and I home tested myself since you can't blv ppl this days cuz they lie too much". The weight is cute it makes you feel like you have a 550$ hardware. Only thing I don't like is the opening screen, I thought it should be more solid and have a bit more preassure in it. Overall, I personally like it more than vibrant, feels like a more androidish phone. Only thing I desire is to get my hands on some htc sence.

This is my first smartphone, so I'm pretty excited about what it can do. Only thing I'd really change right now is the SMS notice. The LED flash needs to either be constant (my preference) or much more frequent than it's currently set now. I can't believe that slipped by in UI testing.
Hmm, thanks for the help so far, you guys are really helpful. I've been playing the waiting game with Android since it launched. So many features are always 'right around the corner' and should be implemented any minute now (higher resolutions as rumored in Gingerbread, Tegra 2/ARM9, Super AMOLED on non-Samsung devices,
BUT, hardware keyboards are way too rare nowadays and this keyboard seems to have been executed quite well. Again, rare.
It's very scary to import a device that could end up with a wobbly hinge or repeated resets... but honestly other than the weight and the rootkit, this phone is extremely appealing. Looks dead sexy too.
It is sexy as hell. With that said, I'm on my second because I wanted the better deal from Costco.....100 vs 200
My first one started rebooting on its own (at least it restarted-my captivate shut down and wouldn't turn back on automatically) and now this one has the screen flicker problem when the brightness is set to low. Ill exchange it.
Overall this phone is the best phone I've had since the iPhone was the latest greatest.
Shipping it in with no option to return would make me nervous.

Hmm. Maybe I'll get the Desire Z instead. I'll give it a week or so to see if these have less problems.
- Are there any showstopping problems I should know about with this device?
Not any that I've noticed yet. Build quality throughout the initial release may be an issue- my first G2 had a cracked space bar, weak hinge, and after having the battery die in 6 hours, wouldn't charge or even turn on. The one I've got now? Perfect.
- Any features you felt disappointed not to have, such as HDMI?
Colored notification LED's (whether that's on the speaker or around the track pad), ability to root
- Overall, do you feel like the addition of the keyboard is worth it? Is the extra bulk (thickness, weight) a worthy tradeoff? Do the keys feel too cramped?
The keys most certainly don't feel cramped- it's a very, very spacious keyboard. I personally haven't used it very much, since I'm used to Swype, but the times I have used it (for typing URL's, long emails, or long texts) I've found it very comfortable and easy to use.
- Does the phone feel too heavy? Can you listen to music while jogging without it feeling way too bulky?
No way, I absolutely love the weight of this phone. It feels expensive, if you know what I mean. If you can find a phone with a strong hinge, the build quality feels absolutely fantastic. I don't job, so I can't tell you if it's good for that, but I can't imagine it would be very good for jogging without securing it to yourself in some way.
Hope this helps! This is the first phone that I've bought and truly been completely satisfied with out of the box. Aside from the rooting issues, this phone is perfect.
I absolutely love it! The thinkg flies! My only issues are no wifi hotspot yet and a few radio issues. These two things will be addressed in an ota update so I'm not too worried about it.
I'm really really loving mine. Had the G1 first, then the N1. Haven't had any of the hinge problems or random reboots. Screen is sharp, phone is super snappy (more so then the N1) and feels/looks like an expensive, proper business phone.
The keyboard is nice and got tons of really positive reviews. I personally liked the G1 keyboard better because it had dedicated number keys and overall seemed faster to type on.
As for negatives, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the crappy loudspeaker yet. I'd google some reviews of the speaker first if that factor is important to you.
Overall its a great device and I am very satisfied with it. Having said that I also didn't have any of the problems other users complained about. If you get one that works like mine I think you'd fall equally in love with it.

I just recently got the G2 about two days ago and I love it! I previously had the Blackberry Pearl for a few years and thought it was time for an upgrade. This is my first Android phone and so far, it's wonderful. I don't have the loose hinge issue or any other visible problems.
Just still getting used to it, looking for the good apps that'll tickle my funny bone, and reading more on "rooting" and the like. I'm enjoying my experience.

The Good:
-Speedy, apps launch quickly and the phone is very smooth
-Great size, form factor
-Decent screen and brightness
-GOOD keyboard
-Battery life was impressive
The Bad:
-All three I had (yes, I ended up taking the last one back too) did the reboots in low service areas
-On my morning drive, my HD2 never drops my call. The G2 would drop in 3 places every day
-The hinge was very poorly done, and as someone who started the HTC keyboard phones with the Tytn-II, Touch Pro, and Touch Pro 2, I know they can get it right. This was just a stupid, stupid design.
-No 4gb of storage
-What the hell is with the trackpad? Can we just ditch it and save a bit of space?
I could have looked past the hinge issue, but the obvious radio issues combined with the DRM like protection of the ROM, I decided that TMOUS and HTC could shove it with this phone.

mt4g vs g2?

Hey guys, I was just wondering what were your opinions on the g2, and why did you guys pick the mt4g over the g2? I have a g2 myself, and I think it is a fantastic phone. I checked out the mt4g today, and I thought it looked pretty weird and awkwardly designed.
I do not mean to offend anyone, I was just interested in why you decided to pick the mt4g instead of the g2. The mt4g's material just felt weird to me, because it was mixed with plastic and metal, while the g2 has a consistant aluminum feel to it, which makes it seem like a high end device. Also the sense ui seemed downright silly. Then again it might just be me. I also see a lot of people returning their g2 for a mt4g.
What are your opinions/reasons for sticking with the mt4g?(Do you think the mt4g is aesthetically pleasing as the other phones?) Thanks.
I currently own both. Deciding right now which one to send back. It's looking more and more like it will be my G2. Here's my opinion after owning both:
I slightly prefer how the G2 looks. It's a classier phone. Part of that class is the all metal feel, and the soft buttons. I wish the myTouch didn't have this cheap looking chrome around the bezel. If it was like a piano black or even just flat black like the rest of the phone it would be much better looking. The plastic hard buttons are obviously not as nice as the soft buttons on the G2. That said, it's not really a deal breaker.
In your hand, and in your pocket, the myTouch wins. It's thinner, lighter, and I personally think it just feels better. The G2 was a little clunky for my tastes, but still acceptable.
The screen is basically a tie for me. They are the same resolution, and the myTouch is 0.1" bigger. The net result is that if you really scrutinize the two phones, the G2 is going to look ever so marginally sharper. Obviously this is because it has a slightly smaller screen with the same resolution, or more pixel density. In reality, unless you did a side by side caparison and stared at both of them, they are the same. Interestingly enough, when comparing the two, I found the color accuracy to be better on the myTouch, and it was slightly more vibrant. Again, they are so close this is a tie.
After having the G2 for 3 weeks, I've used the physical keyboard twice. Clearly, I don't have a use for it. This alone is the reason to get a G2 or not, in my opinion. If you don't use the keyboard, the G2 is just a bulkier, heavier myTouch with the possibility of hinge problems in the future. If you do use it though, the added weight and thickness is well worth it.
Stock for stock, the myTouch is a faster phone. However, for anyone on this forum, that's completely irrelevant, because you're just going to download visionary and vision_oc.ko and overlock your G2. When both phones are rooted (or temp rooted) the performance is basically identical. The G2 was just underclocked from the factory, presumably for battery life.
The only other things that set the myTouch apart from the G2 are the front facing camera, metal contacts on the side for a dock, and HTC sense. The front facing camera is cool, I don't know if I'll ever really use it. It's nice to know I can if I want though. Being able to use a dock is nice, although I don't know if I'll ever even buy one. HTC sense, in my opinion, is crap. However, some people really like it, and this can be a bonus for them. For me, I just use launcher pro anyway, so whether the phone has sense or not, it operates identically. I've actually found with the myTouch that the combination of HTC sense and launcher pro is actually kind of nice.
Last but not least, the genius button. At first, this seemed like a gimmick, but it's actually become one of the reasons I may end up keeping this over the G2. I'll illustrate the power of this little button for you. On both phones, this is how you would send a text message by voice:
G2: Press and hold the search button. Say, "Text John Smith." The text message window appears. You tap the message body, then tap the microphone button. Then you say, "This is a test message." Then you read your message and make sure it looks right. Then you tap send.
myTouch: Press the genius button. Say, "Send text to John Smith." The text message window appears, and a voice asks, "Would you like to dictate?" You say, "Yes." It prompts you to speak, and you say, "This is a test message." It then says, "This is a test message. Would you like to send this message?" You say, "Yes."
On G2, you had to look at your phone 3 different times, read your text message, and press several buttons. On the myTouch, you never looked at your phone, and pressed one button. Obviously if you want to text and drive, the myTouch is the phone for you.
So after all that, did I really sway you one way or the other? Probably not...lol. They are both good phones.
tl;dr
If you use a physical keyboard, get a G2. If you don't, get a myTouch. If you're on the fence, try out the genius button, it may sway your decision.
I had a Nexus One, I liked the idea of the G2, but it was basically exactly the same phone I had in my N1, just with a keyboard and a slightly slower processer. It wasn't worth paying money for something that was going to be the same performance I already had but more weight and bulk.
The MT4G has a faster processor, slightly larger screen, a lot more RAM, a lot more internal memory and I'm starting to like Sense.
I said I would only upgrade my N1 if I found something better, and the MT4G is better, the G2 is basically a Nexus One with a keyboard.
I agree with all those points. I had a G2 as well (2 of them). The end result was that both were glitchy, apps force closed constantly, and the camera sucked.
One thing I disagree with is the hard vs. soft keys. I prefer the hard keys. I am sick having to hit a soft key over and over and not have it respond. With the hardware buttons there is no question... just a satisfying click.
I haven't had a single hiccup since I have had my MT4G... so far it is one of the best phones I have ever used... well, one issue... downloading apps off wifi seems to be hit or miss.

I edited my post, adding one other thing that I really like about the phone (that I didn't think I would at first) and that's the genius button. Texting without ever looking at your phone is very powerful.
@realitydesign, thanks for the info, it did give me more insight on the mt4g. I did play with the genius button, but I thought it was just another useless bloatware so I quit it.(didnt want to quote you because you posted a pretty long response. I appreciate your opinion, thanks.)
@CyberStorm98, the g2 has a newer processor that outperforms the n1 actually...
Overall I like it a lot more than my G2. Better look overall, feels better in the hand (much, much thinner), glass screen, ffc, customizable LED notification light, the phone is pure win. I like the design of this phone a lot.
If there is an iPhone killer, this is definitely it.
Also, only the white myTouch 4G's have plastic on them. The plum, black, and red models all feature hard rubber.

My Touch 4G

ROM - 4GB
RAM - 768MB
3.8 inch LCD
Htc G2
800 MHz - Qualcomm
ROM - 4GB
RAM - 512 MB
3.7 inch LCD
So the Mytouch 4g Processor is 200mhz faster (stock) u cant compare the g2 to the mytouch 4g when its overclocked cause thats not a fair comparison.
Mytouch 4g Ram is 256 MB More In Then G2
so the mytouch 4g should be faster but idk if sense ui slows it down vs stock android but thats the only difference in the two that matters
My wife and I are both former G1 users who got them on the initial pre-order. Last July, I replaced my G1 with a Vibrant, while my wife kept hers, in light of rumors that were circulating about the upcoming G2. The Vibrant turned out to be one enormous problem, with nothing more than a gorgeous SAMOLED screen to save it.
The G2's release coincided with my wife's birthday, so I bought it for her. I immediately felt phone envy, as the user experience of the G2 is far superior to the Vibrant. Although I almost bought a G2 as well, I decided to wait for the MT4G, which, by that time, was rumored to be released in November.
So far, the MT4G has been leaps and bounds better than the Vibrant. Yes, the screen is definitely not as beautiful. However, absolutely everything else is far superior. How does the MT4G stack up against the G2?
Both are fantastic phones, geared toward two completely different groups of users. Want vanilla Android and a physical keyboard? The G2 is for you. Want a front-facing camera, Sense UI, and don't care for the physical keyboard? Get the MT4G.
When it comes to the physical buttons on the MT4G, you either love them or hate them. Personally, after using the Vibrant for nearly 4 months, physical buttons are a welcome relief. Every now and then, I'd accidentally touch one of Vibrant's tactile buttons while doing something, causing the phone to perform undesired functions. It didn't happen often, but it surely got annoying when it did.
Since the G2 is underclocked and has less RAM than the MT4G, it's slightly less snappy, but it's not really noticeable during daily use. Again, one phone is not better than the other. Both are equipped with different sets of features for different sets of users.
Its all about perspective, and taste. If you like typing and browsing the web than the g2 would fit you perfectly.. if you like the idea of having two cameras and a slimmer device than go for the MYT4G
FROM MY SEXY COLD GLACIER
Its up to you really. For some reason I like how g2 doesnt suck up so much memory ram. Mytg4 pretty much uses all its memory

I'm selling my Vibrant on craigslist because I want to get the MT4G. I went to tmobile and looked over the G2 and the new MT4G although I like the sleek design of the G2i noticed the bezel was loose and flopping around when you turned three phone over so right then I knew there would be future problems down the road.
I like the sense ui on the mytouch and the flashlight app was so neat also. The one thing I truly hate about my Vibrant is the lack of a notification light. I downloaded quadrant on both phones while I was in tmobile and ran benchmarks. The G2 scored 1500 and the MT4G scored 1800.

I never would have thought of running it 3 times in a row (even though every benchmark I run on a PC I run 3 times) - I ended up eeking out 1922 from the 3rd run.
Trying the 4th time now LOL
WOW - 4th time dropped like a rock! 1653!
Makes me wonder how much credit you REALLY can give to quadrant - especially with the scores that people are getting on a Vibrant with lag fix (I was one of those people). I felt a slight increase in speed on the lagfix, but not enough to justify benchmark scores nearly triple of the originals.
picked a myTouch 4G because i did not like the bulky keyboard
not to mention that the mytouch 4G has a front camera to boot..
I brought back my MT4G and got the G2 and here are my observations....
1) The screen is nicer on the G2 - not that the MT4G screen was bad, this just seems a little more... balanced.
2) I can't quite understand why a "vanilla" android phone (G2) is still running 2.2 when the MT4G that is all MySensed-out has 2.2.1 !
3) The keyboard is really nice, but the hinge is HORRIBLE.
4) I like the lighted notification "Ring" around the trackpad, something the MT4G doesn't have.
5) (I knew this already but I have to put it out there) Stock android's email client works, but doesn't quite have the flair that MySense's email client has.
6) The screen doesn't seem as responsive as the MT4G - not that it's bad, but just not quite as good.
All in all, the G2 is going back and I'm getting my MT4G back tomorrow morning. The hinge issue, well, lets just say that HTC should never had let these out the door like this, and T-Mobile should never have accepted them in this condition. The hinge is a deal breaker for an otherwise VERY nice phone. They should not be charging $50 more for this phone either.
all i gotta say is, myTouch 4G White , Best Phone,.Stock since day 1 no problems yet, battery pretty good,. flawless wifi router.loudspeaker. crisp screen.new to genius button but its been pretty useful, if ur in to Full handsfree mode.
Was sitting in the same boat. Got the G2 first (coming from a Nexus) and decided to give the MT4G a try when it came out.
Looks and size:
At first I found the G2 a lot more aesthetically appealing although I immediately noticed how much thinner and lighter the MT4G felt. Coming from the N1 it took a bit of adjustment to get used to the size and weight of the G2 and the physical keys on the MT4G. Having said that I really like how the G2 lays in your hand when you're web browsing with the keyboard open.
Look wise the MT4G is definitely not a Nexus 2. In my opinion the aluminum rim looks a little out of place and I don't like how the battery cover doesn't match with the colors on the red and plum model. On the black model the aluminum does not stand out as much because it blends in nicely with the black. Since it's more subtle it actually ends up looking quite good. I definitely could have gone with soft buttons instead of the physical ones but that's my personal preference.
Keyboard:
Whether you want a keyboard or not definitely comes down to personal preference. It's nice to have one but you pay for it in additional size and weight. The keyboard got great reviews so I assume a lot of people like it. I personally wasn't a big fan. Typing seemed slower and more strenuous than on my G1 because of the large keys and lack of dedicated number keys. I would have liked it better with 4 rows instead of 3 (bringing back the numbers) and smaller keys to start with. I also never quite got used to the special function keys HTC decided to add. Due to their prominent positioning one is quite prone to accidentally hitting them.
One major flaw of the keyboard is that you have no control over the keyboard backlighting. Until some custom rom fixes the issue, the light will come on and off and on and off etc when you're inside because the light sensor can't make up its mind. I found myself more than once covering the light sensor with my finger to force the backlight to come on because I had problems seeing the keys in the light condition I was in and had no way of forcing it to stay on.
Build quality:
When you put the phones next to each other you'll notice that most of the materials are the same. Both have metal battery covers and use hard rubber for the rest. Even the screens are identical (despite some rumors going around). The main difference is the front of the G2 with the soft keys vs plastic physical keys on the MT4G. G2 wins hands down in that area but I don't think this difference is nearly as significant as the controversial hinge when talking about quality and durability. I guess only time will tell how that'll play out. Considering how many people have sent their G2 back because of the hinge you should be prepared that it MIGHT be a problem in the long run.
Operating system/interface:
Since we have root there's really no point in comparing sense (+ genius button) to stock since you'll eventually be able to run either one on either device. It might be more important to consider dev support. So far the G2 seems to have more support but you also have to keep in mind that the MT4G has barely been out for a week. That considered it still got root the same day the G2 did and ClockworkMod recovery was ported to the MT4G 8 hours after the G2 got it. I even already saw pictures of a MT4G running an experimental version of CyanogenMod 6. Since the devices are so similar you can expect that most stuff for the G2 will be ported to the MT4G rather quickly and vice versa. One other thing to consider is that video chat will probably be an integral part of gingerbread. Makes me wonder how the G2 will hold up in the android 3.0 era (although I'm sure custom roms will work around it).
Unique features:
G2: keyboard, click mechanism for battery cover
MT4G: front facing camera (FFC), 256MB additional RAM, 100 mAh better battery, hot swappable micro sd card
Verdict:
Both are great phones. I ended up picking the MT4G (black) because size mattered more to me than the keyboard and I liked the additional ram. I also liked having the FFC. Those are things no custom rom can add and ended up mattering more to me than aesthetics. I also noticed my hinge getting slightly looser during the 3 weeks I had the G2 which worried me a little. If you want a keyboard however, or really dig that clean cut business look, the G2 is your phone. Good luck deciding.
I don't think they have the same screen, the mt4g has way worse viewing angles than the g2, I have them both right now.

The screens are exactly the same. It's the software which is causing the difference.

If not the Nexus S, what will it be?

I can hold it until Q1 of 2011. If Nexus S isn't worth replacing my Nexus One, what do you think will it be?
I won't be buying the S, even if I was up for an upgrade. No notification LEDs, no external SD card support, no significant hardware upgrades.
I'll wait and see what the dual core world has in store for us in the near future. I do like the LG Star a lot.
Also, for all those in the market, I'd at least wait until CES in January before making any decisions.
Unless you can't wait.

I never really paid much attention to the LG Star, but now since I keep hearing it being mentioned, I did a quick Google search.
It definitely destroys the NS it seems in terms of hardware..
boring device, I was expecting at least a keyboard, I might jump to sprint and get the EVO, this is my desired device so far:
-qwerty keyboard
-Call End hardware buttons, front hardware butons for home back and menu
-4" screen
I'm holding out for something made by HTC... Dual core with a decent gpu... Gingerbread or better.. no keyboard needed... a decent external speaker.. and 4"+ display with a better resolution than wvga.. hdmi out .. 4g etc..
i can wait... my N1 is more than adequate for the time being
Well, I plan to stay on Tmobile so I guess Im going to keep waiting as I agree with many others, The S is not a big enough improvement over the Original.
On Tmo as well with N1.
I'm thinking of grabbing up a MT4G for now, bc I'm looking for a new device. The Nexus One is an awesome device, it's just that as a year approches, I need something new. The MT4G is will be a great interim phone until something with:
Dual Core
4+" AMOLED/SLCD
768MB+ RAM
2.3 Stock
HSPA+ support
and why not throw a front facing camera just so people can't hate on it.
Oh and made my HTC!

If this is true and if it is available outside of Russia, then NexusS with LCD looks to me like the interesting option again. Even despite of boring amorphous rounded shape and cheap plasticky feel.
I simply hate the grainy looks and pentile artefacts of the current SAMOLED generation.
Possibly the PlayStation phone. Battery life would have to be killer.
Damn... I would rather it have a super clear LCD too... hate the RGBG pixel arrangement =(

I don't get the HTC hype from everyone.
Sure, they used nice materials for the N1 exterior, but the screen is pathetic, the power button eventually fails, the volume buttons fail, and the speaker is terrible.

I have to agree, other than the really nice exterior of the N1, nothing else is really that great. The speakers are just HORRIBLE - and the screen is just unbelievable. I am happy to have some plastic to be honest if it means a very good screen and speakers.

Funny this.
That "unbelievable" AMOLED screen is actually produced by the same Samsung and was rawed as the ultimate and absolutely gorgeous AMOLED, the final answer to all the OLED problems. Then couple of months later came Super-Amoled and it is the same story once again.
Just wait for Ultra-Amoled and all the forums around the world will immediately explode with comments stating, that those S-Amoleds are just plain horrible

It may not happen at all, but it's a pretty widespread and well known N1 issue.
Mine has just started to get pretty bad and I got mine in January.
Got a G1, because it was supported by the google and the community, got a Nexus 1 for the same reasons. I will not be getting the NS, and will wait til whatever google declares as the successor to that.
It will easily be 12 months away, but I think I can manage with the N1 until then.

LG Star looks interesting, but doesn't LG produce low class phones ? I hope it will have vanilla Android without some custom LG UI.

Getting my G2 tomorrow! Very excited!

It finally will arrive from the buyer. Can't wait to root it and get some more CM6 action. Also can't wait to get my Nexus on eBay.

So are you selling nexus s or one on ebay to get g2?. If yes, why? I have nexus s and thinking about exchanging it for g2.

That's exactly what I'm doing. Here's why (pros = +, cons = -):
Nexus S: (can sell for $650)
+beautiful SAMOLED screen
+instant updates from Google
+very light and sexy
-all-plastic housing is a fingerprint and scratch magnet
-no notification LED
-it's a Samsung
G2: (bought for $400)
+hardware keyboard
+matte finish is not a fingerprint magnet
+notification and charging LEDs
+SLCD is also beautiful, albeit less saturated
+HTC quality
-smaller screen
-heavier and larger
-non-Google updates (but I use CM)
Since they're both fairly equal on the specs level (minus the above nit-picks), I'd rather have the extra $250 and the G2's quirks over the Nexus's quirks. I'm also expecting a lot of "next-gen" Android devices to be unveiled at CES, so I'm probably only going to have this phone for 4-6 months anyways. The Nexus is just a little too pricey for something that isn't far enough beyond the G2; they're both essentially in the same hardware "generation."

I can't possibly agree with all your + and - points....
AMOLED is WAY oversaturated. Nice in theory, but doesn't actually look right. It is quite a ways from being on par with SLCD for image quality.
On the VISION, the smaller screen is a ***PLUS***. I actually find the Vision's screen to still be too big. The DREAM's touch screen was a good size. I would never own a phone with a 4+ as it just gets to be too much stretching for 1-handed operation.
Also, being heavier and larger is also a POSITIVE. As an example, try to see how long a ford focus will last out on a battlefield against tanks and machine guns. A phone has to be sturdy and have a substantial mass to it because it IS used in a hostile environment -- temperature changes, water, being dropped, etc. It is also easier to hold when it has some weight. The tiny and low weight junkies are seriously confused people. Its not as if the thing is as big as a cell phone from the 80's.

I won't be touching CM7 on Vision until I know that it can be trusted. Phone has to actually work. Experimental stuff to happen on the Dream.
I finally took the plunge and I have ordered a Desire Z to arrive tomorrow. I almost bit the bullet and bought it at launch but during the delays in Europe, I read so much about the hinge issue and chickened out.
My Touch Pro 2 has developed the dreaded newton rings for the second time in 6months and I have sent it away to be repaired on warranty. I will sell it when it returns.
This situation forced me into buying a new phone and I looked at the Desire Z (again), Nexus S and Desire HD. I just couldnt bring myself to accept the size of the DHD. I have used phones with keyboards for the past 3 years and I dont think I can live without a keyboard. I went to Bestbuy on a few occassions to try out the touchscreen keyboard on the NS but it just didnt feel rght. I know how frustrated I got when I tried to type simple mesages on the screen of my TP2.
I decided on getting the DZ since the hinge 'problem' only surfaces when the phone is held in a ridiculous way you probably will never hold it in most real world situations. Anyway I bought it online so I have 7 days to return it if the hinge seems to be a really big problem.

This is one of the clearest break downs I've seen for choosing a G2. These are some of the reason I chose the G2. Plus I really feel like both the Nexus S and Gingerbread were a rush job for the Christmas dough.
That said, I almost got the Nexus S just for the resale value. Because, come april-may 2011 the G2 probably won't fetch more than $175-200 tops.
Oh well I saved money on this end.

I can't stand "traditional" touchscreen keyboards either, but Swype works really well. I am finding myself surprised at how often I use Swype instead of the hardware keyboard on my Vision. I still use the hardware keyboard for longer messages. But for my next phone, I may seriously consider a phone without a keyboard.

Personal preference? Absolutely. But I'm surprised you would go so far as to call Swype "absolute garbage". What about it didn't you like? As a "regular" touchscreen keyboard, its seems just about as good as any other. As far as 'swiping' words, I find it very good at predicting the word I intended, even when I often know for fact that I didn't hit the letters exactly right.

Swype is the thing of gods. I couldn't use a software keyboard without it.
I tried Swpe on a colleagues Galaxy S and was very impressed. I could get used to using Swype but the problem is I type mainly in slang and a kind of english (african patois) which means I woud have to use the Swype keyboard like an ordinary keyboard most times.

What a phone! So so beautiful! That hinge is not an issue. Under no circumstances would I hold my phone the way that we see in all them videos on the internet.
ALK say on their website that u cant transfer copilot live 8 from a windows mobile to an android phone but its a big lie!. it was the first thing i installed and it works a treat. I have also downloaded angry birds, I know everyones going crazy about that so I thought i would join in. I am going to try and install Swype in a minute. I have only had the phone about 45 minutes and I am completely blown away. I was actually able to watch hustle on BBC iPlayer in my browser. Phone technolgy has grown in leaps and bounds since I bought my TP2.
Thank goodness I didnt allow those videos about the hinge put me off from buying this truly wonderful phone.

I for one think the phone looks great!

The phone isn't going to win any aesthetic prizes but it looks like very post iPhone mobile out there, nothing hideously ugly but nothing amazing. It's just a massive 4.8 inch OLED screen which is amazing to look at that you aren't going to be looking at the rest of the phone.
All this pentile complaints are unfounded, most of the people complaining weren't at the event so don't know what it looks like in person. Wait till the phone is in stores and then make your decision, however I really doubt at 306PPI and 720 resolution that you'll see a difference side by side with the GS2, unless you try and find a fault.
Comes with the CPU that we expected and has benchmarked well already, has a GPU that I was disappointed with at first but also has benchmarked better than anything else out there atm. 8MP camera is the norm, it isn't all about MPs anyways, I'm much more interested to see if the pink spot in the camera has gone and if the lag gone from the GS2 as well. So I'm not disappointed with the hardware at all, it looks like it'll be the fastest and have a good enough camera.
Sorry for admitting this but I think Touchwiz is better than stock Android. I tried to go from Touchwiz back to stock GB on the GS2 as everyone said it was crap and I couldn't, it had much better features. Looking at Samsungs new updates to it for ICS, it just looks amazing and much better than stock ICS, which I thought was a major disappointment. S Voice shuts up the Apple fanbois and the feature I'm excited for is the Picture in Picture stuff, that looks worth it alone for me. I dunno who Samsung have hired to make Touchwiz good since the GS2 but they should be paying them more lol.
I just don't see how people complain about the phone, what do they expect? Yeah the phone is made out of plastic, have you ever owned an iPhone 4? If you drop it the back shatters and the metal always gets dented or scuffed, I used to own one before the GS2. I personally think Plastic is a much better material for a device you will probably drop and most people get an iPhone and put a cheap plastic cover on it and never see the phone under it either. So that makes the phone look worse and makes it much bigger, it probably gets dirt under it and scratches the phone anyways. I dropped my GS2 many times and it never shattered or broke, if the back cover broke then just buy another one, plastic is cheap to replace!
The other great thing is it has a micro sd slot and removable battery, which are features you'd all be moaning are gone if they tried to make the phone out of another material. All these other phones are made Unibody to make them feel more sturdy and yet they lack what people on these forums want.
I don't get the complaining, I'm going to see it in a store and if I like it in person then buy one. I think it looks great and what I expected from the GS3. All the leaks too didn't big the phone up to being this mad crazy super phone that changes the world or whatever. So I don't see what people were expecting...
I have ur same opinion, totally agree
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Same opinion also.
Its the iPhone effect as I call it - Everyone will always find something to moan about but will still end up buying one and loving it. It will sell in the millions regardless.
Pretty much agree. I think the phone looks pretty decent, then again the whole zen theming is kinda my thing anyway, so I might be kinda biased. Also I really don't understand whats the problem with the homekey, I actually MUCH prefer having a real homekey than onscreen buttons... They take up screen space cause burn in and I hit them by accident ALL THE TIME.
The screen is a bit of a letdown but I think AMOLED HD+ is just not ready yet and with that resolution pentile isn't that much of a problem. Also once you go AMOLED you can never go back, those washed out blacks on an LCD are just unaccaptable for me..
People were expecting WAY too much. If they really did use a ceramic body people would complain about the pricing because it would be a hell lot more expensive. The hardware in this phone is very good ,zero shutter lag and the improved camera software are really great and some of the gimmicks look really practical (I can see me use popup play all the time). Oh and btw. with the tiny camera sensors in smartphones image quality will actually get worse by bumping up the Megapixel count, but I guess people will never understand that..
TouchWiz is not the most beautiful launcher out there, but it is one of the smoothest (the new version looks even smoother) and I find alot more appealing than Sense. Sense is actually one of the reasons I'd never get a HOX along with the poor unreplacable battery and the lack of an mircrosd card slot.
Once it hits the shelves I'm sure people will stop complaining and see what a nice device samsung has made here. It is not a revolutionary update but it is a pretty good update and I will use it until the next S phone comes out or if the other companies will come to their senses and give us back microsd card slots and removable batteries.
Same here, personally I love the look, what were HTC thinking with the no SD or replaceable battery.
What happens in a year or so when all the batteries start falling over!
I think this version of Touchwiz looks the best personally and I love the new icon style, it feels much more like Ubuntu or something.
The features in Touchwiz though just make it much better than stock ICS, that is if they work...
Yep, i'm bored of the iphone look and welcome change.
Well said folks and i agree totally, look forward to getting this phone
Can't agree more. The pebble blue looks great. The only thing I still worry is the battery life. I hope it is better than gs2 with the 2000 mah battery. I have been spoiled.

I think it looks great and possibly even better when you get it in your hands. And it's a distinct samsung design. They have a good brand and it's time to trust in it, I think.
I for one did not like the design one bit when I first saw it, but then it kind of grew on me, and I've now pre-ordered two. The whole "designed for humans" slogan didn't make much sense to me, but after actually taking the time to investigate the shape of the sgs3 up close, it dawned on me just how comfortable the thing will be in your hands. The iPhone 4/4S is in my opinion absolutely horrible when it comes to ergonomics, and the SGS2 does not win any prizes in that category either, and now Samsung has designed an ergonomically sensible phone that will fit into your hand perfectly, and thus has been designed with human use in mind. Instead of just having something pretty to look at, like the post 3GS iPhones have been, we now have something that'll be comfortable to handle and hold for long periods of time.
I for one can't wait to get my hands on my new phones!
Will buying depending on when its released for us. I do hope a Bigger battery comes out around release with it being a slim 2700 or even 3000 would be amazing. Add a little bit to the phone and its fine.
I think it looks ok.. Nothing really to dislike. I would say the Samsung widgets could do with some attention. The widgets on my sgs2 are inconsistent. Look at the agenda widget next to the clock. It looks like they have been downloaded from different developers. If they had made the widgets look consistent that would be an improvement. Look at sense for example. The widgets are slick.
The weather widget on the sgs3 is ugly and won't really fit with many wallpapers.

The take-home message: People don't like change. The Galaxy S III represents a departure from the design aesthetic the S-line has carried on for the last two years. Instead of more of the same, Samsung opted to continue along the design route it forged with the Galaxy Nexus. And guess what? It's welcomed. Personally, I'm tired of the rectangular phones.
...Samsung didn't cater to the sheep-mentality. Earlier I said, it met all my expectations. I was wrong. It went beyond expectation. Samsung delivered gave the world a stand-out [completely different] device....The trust that Mr. Savov indicates is being lost is untrue. The opposite is valid: Samsung continues to build trust among it's faithful, while earning and winning the trust of newcomers by pushing the boundaries in its latest flagship. Like most outrageously designed products (Bangle's BMW designs come to mind), at first, they startle, but over time, you come to appreciate how far-reaching the design perspective was. Samsung is looking ahead to what we will understand to love, once we dispense with the "sheepish" attitude that drawn to the same old rectangular slab that employs the same old tired heuristic.

Which is not to say I agree with him on the S3's "beauty" and "falling in love", but that a lot of the reactionary crap spouted here was just because people hate change. The same thing happens everytime facebook makes a major UI change, then people get used to it. Given this, there is a minor irony in that "sheep" thing.
I honestly don't know why there is so much backlash on the design. It looks great!
The ugliest phone this generation has got to be the Nokia Lumia series.
1. rear flash and speakers. way too exposed
2. not a big deal but it does bother me. just make it smaller.
3. home button. if they kept curve on both sides the same it would look like the shape of the phone, it would look nicer.
4. curves too much and looks like the top part is also smaller...should be the other way around if you want to save the phone from dropping.
5. size. for people who wants a bigger screen. that's where the Note comes in. but for a phone to use with one handedly and with the thumb. it say it's too big for the majority.
might change my mind later down the road, who knows.
prob still get it, just to toy around and its newer but not for full price.
The front is very identical to Nexus devices which I like, but the back is quite metrosexual, they should have given its some pattern, which would help with grip too. I guess they'll be some custom back cover for it. It would have looked nicer with the curved body.
I just bought a Nexus instead, so if anyone asked me what it is, I'll say its the new SIII: http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2707/nexuss3k.jpg
Will wait till Christmas and get myself a global SIII when it lowered price after the American versions are released. Hopefully the price lowered as fast of a rate as the Nexus, by $350 after six months, but unlikely this time as quadcore is still new and S series is popular.
Don't forget, there were quite a few complaints about the S2 when it came out.
Same exact comparisons were made against the sensation
I do like most of the external design except for the rear battery cover. Maybe someone would make a nice replacement cover that's less slippery
I disagree with the op,
I think this phone will indeed win in the looks department. Like i said before I was too overhyped initially. Expecting it to be made with T1000 metal with Phasers shooting out the side. Now, I can see that it's one of the most beautiful minimalist phones ever made. I think it will win in the aesthetic category.
