[Q] can you change the size of the on screen buttons

i was wondering if there was a way to change the size of the soft buttons for home, back, ect. I was hoping to make them smaller as to not interfere with games and other apps. as well as making the home screen larger and better looking. please if any one has any info on this i would appreciate it. i am not a developer but do have lots of android experience so any info may be useful. Thanks
EDIT: with new firmware out if you have updated the frameworks posted here so far wont work. i am trying to get someone to post a new framework from the new firmware. Hopefully someone will. Thanks
The icons you're interested in are located in the drawable folder of the framework-res.apk (buttonbar_sys_*), along with the relevant xml files. I tried resizing the existing icons, but all you get is smaller icons! The buttonbar remains the same size. I'm currently looking at which xml file to edit to resize the bar itself.
cool looks like a start at least. keep me updated. thanks
You can remove side panel alltogether. Buttons will then placed in the top status panel. Root is needed.
From Archos Gen8 FAQ on 4pda.ru (can't posting outside links, sorry):
In the /data/local.prop file add string
Code:
ro.board.has_buttonbar=no
reboot
to change buttons size, install app LCD Density
add to local.prop sting
Code:
ro.sf.lcd_density=120
reboot
PS. Perhaps with modified buttons from reply #2 we don't need the last step, as it change font size too.
you can also use the app 'lcd density' to change the resolution of the screen, which makes the buttons smaller.

Just to clarify, you either need to add that string to local.prop or install LCD Density, no need for both. The only problem with this is that it changes the size of the entire UI, and makes the icons in the status bar really tiny. That really bugs me!

There are different images for the icons in the notification bar. They are also in the drawable folder, but are called stat_sys_*. Also, simply resizing those doesn't work either. Tried it, but the icon area stays the same, so the smaller icons are just stretched out to fill the space - doesn't look good!
Why all the guys want to kill the softbuttons?
Without them, it don´t work
The only thing is bad on the buttons is the fact that they still there by playing games
But on my Archos 5 IT , theres an fullscreen mode with that you can disable the bar/buttons by playing games.. maybe a dev can look at it

no, kill them than install softkeys, it works for me, no any problem^^
Reading through gen8 thread on 4pda.ru i have found another method:
For example, for 32px notification bar height, unpack framework_res.apk and change file \res\values-long-mdpi\dimens.xml as follows:
Code:
<dimen name="full_statusbar_height">32.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="compact_statusbar_height">32.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="statusbar_button_width">40.0px</dimen>
<dimen name="statusbar_button_height">32.0px</dimen>
And don't forget string "ro.board.has_buttonbar=no" in the \data\local.prop
No need to resize images. They will be scaled down automatically.
See attached screens.
ahh looks like progress , im guessing im going to need root if i want to change the framework_res.apk? which one is best for this archangle, uruk or churlis method?

Won't work with Archangel root, as that doesn't allow you to make changes to system files.

Will be making some changes to my custom framework, so check out my thread over the next few days.
i need A framework for an 70it. I don't think that the one for a 101 will work on mine. But I don't know.

cheers just one more question, would this work on the A43?
Attaching zipped framework apks, 32px and 24px versions fo 70IT, courtesy by bokorez from 4pda.ru. He used rooting method from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930197 (permanent r/w). I myself now only waiting for tablet, so i can't check files yet. Use it for your own risk please
It would be fine if somebody much knowledgeable than me would explain here, how to upload these files on the device.
Thanks alot. that helped out a great deal.
EDIT: I think that both are the same. i used them both and they worked but both changed the size to the same. i think that they are both 32px.

I don't know why, but if you open apk with archiver program, there is really no such folder, but if use
Code:
apktool -v d -s framework-res.apk
you get:
Code:
$ ls framework-res/res/values-long-ldpi/
dimens.xml
I think that both are the same. i used them both and they worked but both changed the size to the same. i think that they are both 32px.

No, they are different. File framework-res/res/values-long-ldpi/dimens.xml are the same in both versions and contain "24.0px" value (this is error, i suppose). Files framework-res/res/values-long-mdpi/dimens.xml are different and contain "24.0px" and "32.0px" values in 24- and 32-version respectively.
It seems i need to sort it out with the author on 4pda.ru, as i don't have device yet. Or you can try to change file dimens.xml in the folders values-long-* by yourself.

Mates,
I've investigated why Button Savior won't work, and I've found the solution.
In Uruk (since I'm using it), /system/bin/input shell script miss execute attributes.
So, as root just do this:
chmod +x /system/bin/input
That's all.
Cheers.

Ok so here's exactly what I have to do to get all button on Button Savior to work.
Again I'm rooted via SDE so I'm not sure if this works for Archangel root.
1. With Root explorer, go to System> Bin and look for "input" file.
2. Press and hold for option to pop up and select "Permissions" and check all read, write, etc.
3. Reboot the device
4. Then press the regular Menu button (NOT on Button Savior yet) and go to Settings> Applications> Development then uncheck and recheck USB Debugging and hit OK.
5. Now on Button Savior press the either back or menu button.
6. The Superuser permission will pop up and select yes. If superuser is already set previously then a dialog box will shortly appear stating superuser permission applied.
7. Wait till the dialog box goes away, then press the back button. It should now back up one screen. If you press menu nothing will happen since you are in the Development screen which doesn't have a menu option so don't panic if that happens.
From here you can go back to home and test each button and they should all work now.
Each time you reset the buttons might not work again so what you need to do is go back and uncheck/recheck debugging first before pressing any of the Button Savior buttons. If you press any of Button Savior before recheck/unchecking debugging then it wont work. You'll need to reboot. To be safe uncheck/recheck it every reboot prior to using Button Savior.
The permissions should not be affected on reboot. The only time the permission gets unchecked is if you do the 10 second reset (holding power button for 10 seconds). In this case you have go back to step 1.

[Q] A500 status bar icons/clock/buttons change?

Hi to all...
after seraching and reading a looong time now, i am stucked, the only thing i found was this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033366
But i own a A500 not a Xoom... so what to do?
Wishlist:
- White Home/Backbuttons (have some, from Dexters Rom)
- white clock
- white Wifi/Battery Icon (at least not this &%$(/& stock blue)
dreaming:
when you scroll through your homescreens, a blue frame appears, how can i change those color into black? would be awesome, let it completly disappear, so transparent maybe?
I know many of you like the Blue Theme from honeycomb, but... i really hat it!!!
So, if anyone could help me... please feel free.
I am using Dexters Iconia P2-2, and dont want to use another. So maybe someone can post a modified systemui.apk ?
I have no idea if such a apk is always compatible to all ROMs from 3.1, so i dont want to test the Xoom one, and in this apk are things i dont want to have (like green google search bar, green glow and so on) modding, opening apk files by myself... i think its easier for me went back in time and kill hitler...
I wonder why there is no real theme mod around here for the Acer A500.
Hope some knowing guys can help, or want the same... let's see
Thank you anyway

thats easy....I can tell you how to do it yourself..
NOTE: an apk is just a zip file, do not decompress these, rather double click them and open them in winrar and you can see the contents.
Download the xoom theme, and there is a folder called "System App" this has the apk you want to play with. inside each apk there is a file called "res" inside this there are a few folders, the ones you are interested in are any named "drawable..." this is where all of the graphics are held.
then open the zip the rom comes in, i.e double click and winrar will open, go to system\app and find the same apk that are contained in the theme, then it is a process of swapping the files from one to the other.
when you are finished making changes, copy your edited apk back into your rom and flash it without wiping data, because it is the same rom nothing will happen apart from th4e new apk will be installed!!
Hope that helps...

yeah, this is what I love about android, you can take someone elses rom, skin the apk to your liking, even add missing applications you use regularly and just flash.
as long as you dont decompress, the signature usually stays intact.
if you need further assistance, pm me
edit : most imagery is in the drawable-mdpi folder
I just skinned the systemui.apk is 10 minutes just so you have an idea of how easy this is!!!!

original settings.apk

I add original apk from android 2.1 to my nook, but i doesn't work. I now can't enter to setting page, wifi atc... Please if some one would be angel, and send me the true original settings.apk from Nook touch. Thanks.
Go to the B&N webpage for the 1.1.2 update: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175/
Download nook_1_1_2_update.zip.
It is a signed ZIP file, you can open it with 7zip, http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
(Windows can't open this directly without stripping the signature.)
Get whatever you like out of /system/app
If you aren't up to 1.1.2 yet, just do the manual update and it will fix things.
(Except that you may have to re-root.)
Thank. I try this before, but this signed zip archive get me
Install 7zip, thak to CrossOver (MAC). Extracted settings.apk. And everything work perfect. Thank you Renate!
Thread moved to general, based on the fact it's not a : mod/kernel/rom.
I write it works, but only procedure to get apk from update to phone. Settings app dont work, I can't see a icon in menu (but don't know there must to be), anyway i run setting from B&N bottom bar, nothing run. I can't event add widgets because context menu don't show. Please has some one any idea?
If you are running 1.1.2 and you put the Settings.apk out of nook_1_1_2_update.zip in, then it's the right one.
Settings.apk 971,804 bytes
Did you put it in the right place? Does it have the right permissions?
Did you kill SettingsProvider.apk too?
What does logcat say when it bombs? Give us a hint.
Yes, I have same size Settings.apk. I put it to /system/app/, permission set to rw-r--r-- .
I touch only setting.apk -SettingsProvider.apk is the same.
When I click on top bar (wifi/battery icon) restart nook, when I click on bottom B&N bar nothing shows.
Sorry i dont have terminal, and wifi home, at this time. I don't know what try...
When you click on the top bar you start: com.android.settings/.Settings_Quick
Have you tried Settings in the app drawer?
When you click on the settings icon in the app drawer you start: com.android.settings/.Settings_Root
Does everything else work?
Top bar -Quick setting (restart) -not work
Bott.bar -B&N settings button (nothing) - not work
Add widgets (nothing)-not work
NookColor Tools -All settings (No applications can perform this action)-not work
App drawer (No settings icon) - not work
Activity picker (no settings option) - not work
I try this posible accesses with and without setting.apk in /SYSTEM/APP but same result. -there is no diference if I have app or if not. I try install app "clasical" way, but I got -this app replace another existing app, after I move next app failed to install.
Why I get message (this app replace another existing app) if I don't have in my system nothing touches settings.apk?

How to change generic contact pic

I am on alliance Rom and it is fantastic. Everything is themed just the way I like it. I only need to change one last thing to realize my dream setup. Does anybody have any idea on how to universally change the generic contact pics that shows up in my mms?

Yes.
If you like, provide a copy of what you want to change it to. I have a copy of Alliance Build1 on my phone and can make you a flashable. When I post it, I will give you some general instructions on how to add to it, if you like.
Edit: And just to be sure, did you flash a theme at all?
That would be awesome. I did flash all backs black theme. I actually just want a totally black bg pic to sub in. I would be ok with a way to completely remove the contact pic at all. Thanks a ton for your help
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Free mobile app
Zip attached. Flash in recovery. It does not replace SecMms.apk, it only replaces thise pngs inside it. It wipes dalvik for you. I will add on a short tutorial on how to add onto this yourself shortly.
View attachment 2906973
Ok. This uses the vr-theme script. Most of the a.b.b. theme uses it as well.
If you unzip flash me.zip, and go inside, you'll see this
Drill down into the vr theme folder. . .
You see a folder with the exact same name as what you're modding. Please note that it has the exact spelling, including the .apk. I'll get to how I chose what's inside in a minute. The way I get what's inside was I unzipped thee abb theme, and got to the SecMms.apk app. In abb it is a full app. So to get into it, use a file explorer. I used es file explorer. Long press it and choose to open it. If you just short press like normal, it will try to install it.
When you open it go into the res folder.
Then I chose this folder to extract (because it had the images I wanted)
And when you back out, you get this
Go into that folder, you'll see a bunch of pngs. I delete the ones I don't want to change. I'm left with
For your zip, I made all these images transparent.
I then placed the SecMms folder to the flash me in the correct folder (vr-theme/system/priv-app, for this mod) and renamed it to include tha ".apk".
Then I zipped it up.
A couple of side notes:
Any .9.png files... don't modify those unless you know how. Google it if you really wanna know.
Any .png files... if you replace it rather than edit it, 1. Make sure the name matches exactly. 2. Make sure the dimensions match exactly to ensure it shows correctly. If it isn't the same, crop or resize.

For creating a folder on the home screen. You should first drag one app over another. Which will create an option to combine and put both apps in an home screen folder. Stop dragging to confirm your choice. You can now add many more apps to the folder according to your choice. You can touch on the folder and then rename it by typing the desired name you want to give, on the place where written untitled.

Ya but what about menu???likes all the apps are display..its for homescreen..
Try a different launcher... like for eg., next launcher or go launcher or something like tht which can meet ur requirements.
In cyanogen mod of yureka you have a option in settings>apps>protected apps. Just add the unwanted apps to the list of protected apps and you wont see them again until you unprotect them or you can create a folder for the apps on home screen and lock that folder and the apps won't show up anywhere else. Until you unlock the folder or remove the apps from protected apps.
