How do you switch off the camera shutter sound?? - Touch HD General

how do you switch off the camera shutter sound??
It's kinda annoying from time to time. And it is pretty loud, which makes the phone useless inside my lecture room when i want to take a photo of the lecture notes...

Open the camera, tap the screen once to show the toolbar icon, tap it to open the toolbar and tap the gearwheel for settings.
Page 3 sets the shutter sound. Whatever you choose will be remembered.

I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but have you considered looking through the options menu?

The problem is in my page 3, the options are:
Shoot option
Image properties
Effect
Metering mode

No idea then, strange that the option is missing from your device as it's (the option) in the official manual for the Touch HD. I'm using Dutty's 2.6 ROM which has a different camera version to the Stock ROM, I'm pretty sure the option was there on my device before I got the flashing bug, though.

do you have stock rom? my page 3 has shutter sound. metering mode is on page 4

mute your phone , especially during lectures
EDIT:
did not know it's AU version, try overwriting the shutter sound snap.wav in the windows folder
or in the registry "HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\Common\SourceOfSnapSound"
or replace the camera EXE form a different WWE ROM

I swear, some people just want us to feed them.

Not even mute can silent the camera shutter.... This is so annoying.....

Shutter sound cannot be turned off on aussie version
No need to be nasty guys. The posters problem is that they have purchased an Australian version of the blackstone (I have the same phone). It turns out that Telstra in all their wisdom have ensured that the camera sound cannot be turned off (this is something they are doing with all phones now to stop people taking 'up skirt' pics and such). So even if you turn the sound off, if you go into the camera and use it, the phone sound is turned back on. People have tried to change the registry values for the camera sound and this does nothing. Someone has also managed to find the sound file (which cannot be deleted) and replaced it with another sound, but on soft reset the sound is replaced back to original loud annoying and very embarrassing sound.
So if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this (without flashing the rom), there will be a lot of appriciative people out there.

Fixed for you

LOL, well I am both of those things, but don't use a phone camera for either

Problem Solved
First things first:
It turns out that in the aussie version the source sound referred to in the registry (snap.wav) does not exist.
There is also other sounds within the windows folder that were part of the ROM (ShutterSound.wav and TimerSound.wav) but changing these had no effect on the camera sound.
Solution:
I managed to find the source of the sounds within a resource file and have successfully changed them to blank waves. The only issue with this work around is that the phone sound is still switched back on (even from silent mode) and stays on until ~20 seconds after shutting down the camera down, this means that if someone calls, emails or sends a message the corresponding sounds will be made. This could be a problem in lectures etc, but I can't think of any other work around. I'll work out how to make a cab for the change and post it here, in the meantime if anyone wants to know how to manually do the change let me know and i'll post it.

The simplest option for this issue would be for Aussie guys to flash a non-Oz ROM and be done with it. Flashing some of the newer ROMs has many benefits, not least of which would be the ability to mute the shutter sound from within the camera app itself.
To my mind, a much more elegant solution.

Camera Sound Silencer
Flashing the phone is obviously the cleanest method, but this option is not available to everyone. I have recommended the HD to people who have had their work purchase it for them (in such cases flashing is not an option). I also know people who will never flash their ROM, and yet want a quick and reversible solution for their problem. I won't be flashing my ROM until the shipped version of mine is available (I got caught with a warranty issue and a different ROM version before). I'm sure this won't happen until I extract my own so flashing isn't the answer for everyone.
Anyway attached is the CAB for silencing the sound. This works for the Australian ROM (not sure about other countries, so if anyone else tries it, let me know if it works). You first need to install the sdkcerts (this ensures you don't get asked if you trust the source each time you start the camera), then install the CamSilencer(AU).
REMEMBER that each time you use the camera the sound on the phone gets switched on, so if you are worried about phone calls etc, then make your alerts blank sounds too.
Any feedback would be good!

AaronC1978 - Any chance of getting a version of this that will work for the Touch Diamond? I've got a Telstra Touch Diamond that's a work phone, so flashing it is out, as you rightly mentioned above.
I've tried installing both your CABs here, but it's broken my camera. When I go into the camera, it works for about 2 seconds (and I can see the picture from the camera on the display), then the display goes black, and I get an error pop up "Failed to initialize camera. Failure to initialize the camera device.". I uninstalled the CamSilencer CAB, and it's back working again now, but (of course) I still have the obnoxious shutter sound.
Having the other phone sounds turned on after I've been using the camera isn't a problem to me, as I very rarely have the phone on silent anyway, and especially not if I'm taking a picture. I just want to get rid of that horrible loud camera sound! There's one thread in the Diamond section from last year that's gone unanswered and abandoned - help me Obi Wan Kenobi - you're my only hope!
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!

Hey Matto,
I'm no Obi Wan, two weeks ago I knew I could install cabs onto my phone, but that was the extent of it!!
Assuming that a similar file is modified on the diamond I should be able to fix it for you. But first you are going to have to get the file for me. If you don't have it installed you will need to use total commander to be able to get the file:
http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm
Install that on your phone and open it. In the total commander window, open up the windows folder and scroll down to a file called 'cameraRC.dll' and click it. Now click 'copy/move' in the file menu at the bottom of the screen and click click 'tree' on the popup and select eg your storage card. Now click copy on the popup.
Now connect your phone to your pc and move the cameraRC.dll file onto your pc (if you cant see it, make sure that you have "show hidden files" enabled on your file options on your computer).
When that's done, upload the file here and i'll take a look for you.
PM me if you have any trouble.

Hi Aaron,
Sounds like I'm about 2 weeks behind you then! I've uploaded and attached the CameraRC.dll file to this post here as per your beaut instructions - if you wouldn't mind taking a look, I'd really appreciate it. I'm sure all the other Aus TD users would as well!
Thanks for all your help - this has been driving me mad!
Thanks!
Matto

Hey Matto,
I'm glad the instructions were clear, hopefully this CAB fixes the Diamond sound. You still need to make sure you have the sdkcerts file installed first. Also make sure you have uninstalled the HD CamSilencer (which I'm sure you have since it muffed up your camera). Don't stress if this doesn't work, because it is the right file and it just means I've done something wrong on my end (can't test if it works). Let me know how it goes.
Aaron

Hey Aaron,
You're a legend, my friend! Works a treat. Takes away both the focus zoom/lock sound, as well as the obnoxious shutter sound! I already had the sdkcerts installed from the previous attempt, and had uninstalled the old HDCamSilencer.CAB the other day, as you had guessed. Copied the new one across, installed it, rebooted the phone and voila - no sound!
Thanks very much for your help with this - very much appreciated! I'll let you announce it to the guys over in the TD forums, since it's your work and only right that you should get the kudos for it! I'm sure all the Telstra TD users will be very appreciative!
Again, thanks very much for your time and effort into doing this for me! Well done!
Thanks!
Matto

Problems with the Titan

I was just wondering if anyone else have had any of these problems that I have been having.
1. Sometimes the phone will not play any sound at all no music, slide sounds, or ring but i can make a call and hear and talk perfect and the phone will vibrate when i get a call i made sure the sounds are on. Soft reset fixes this everytime but it seems to happen more now like every other day.
2. I have the 6 tab HTC home plugin on my today screen and it used to play music right off the today screen on its own media player not WM. Now when i try to use it it opens WM and i cant change songs from my today screen and it seems stuck on a song but it does not change or update the track info. The only thing it does is open WM when i tap the song name but nothing else. I think I might of messed this up when i reinstalled the WM play button today plugin and i now set the plugin to use the HTC audio manager but i would like it to control WM like i wanted to and the 6 tab plugin to control the HTC audio like its supposed to
3.Almost everytime i get 2 text messages at the same time or a phone call and text at or close to the same time this thing goes nuts vibrating till i turn it off.
4. Sometimes when i use Windows media player and use one of my playlist some of the songs say file cannot be found and i have to delete the song and go back and add it again when its in the same folder as it always is.
Anyone else having any of these problems or am i the only one? I have the new ROM installed and alot of other junk
the no sound problem i have encounterd. as a matter of fact it happened twice today. don't know what that's about.
as for the rest of your issues i have never experienced them. i do have the 6 tab home plugin and i do play music but i've never experienced number 2.
Do you have anything setup in your calendar? On one of the HTC Home tabs, it has the sound settings. If it is set on automatic, it will put the phone on vibrate if you have any appointments on your calendar, and turn back the sound when the appointment is over.

I also have the same 6 tab HTC today installed.
And almost everytime I get a txt or an email notification + a phone call at the same time, the unit freaks out, I can't answer the phone and I almost have to always perform a hard reset.
I have these installed:
- HTC Home Customizer
- TCPMP
- flashlight
- Google maps
- Opera Browser
- PHM RegEdit
- PocketCMD
- RDP Port Switcher
- Telus Mobile Email (visto client I think)
- X-Button
Running WM6
Same Problem.. No Sound
I am having the same problem!!
I am on my second Mogul now due to the fact that intermittently
all the sounds from the speaker stop working. (Ringer, Music, everything)
The sounds come back after a soft reset but it's very annoying!
I have seen other posts with people having this problem but no solutions.
I believe this is a software issue not a hardware as this is my second Mogul this is happening to (the first one I RMA'd for this same issue) and I have tried several different software products on the phone.
This is the what I had on the first mogul:
SPB Mobile Shell
SPB Phone Suite
SPB Pocket Plus
SPB Backup
IM Plus
Resco Explorer
Sk Tools
2kTweaks
This is what I put on the second mogul:
HTC Home (6 Tab)
HandySwitcher
IM Plus
Resco Explorer
SPB Backup
SK Tools
Both are losing all sounds after a period on time!!
If anyone can help me figure out I am periodicly losing sound I would be forever in your debt!!!!
Here's a crazy thought.... any of you try to do a hard reset and NOT load any third party or non-native apps onto the Mogul to see what happens for a few days?
TC1.... The phone is useless without some of these apps.... I can't pull out the stylus everytime I want to do something on the phone....
There are usually alternative apps. I guess the question is would you rather find the cause to the sound problem or run those apps?

Exactly.
This is troubleshooting 101... need to setup a controlled experiment. Start with the basic product and go from there. Note your observations. Add one application at a time and note your observations. Using deductive logic you'll eventually find the cause.
And others please don't whine about the Mogul being "unusable" without these extra apps. The Mogul functions out of the box as a phone and WM6 PDA. Do some of these apps make you more productive? Absolutely. But in order to troubleshoot you can live without them for a few days.
This is my 2 pda in less than 3 months when i 1st had it i didnt know i could install all these apps so it was at least a week or two before i found this site and a few others and i remember i installed the new ROM hoping it would fix the problem...still hoping...
IM+....
Some people have claimed that it's IM+ thats causing the issue........ I will uninstall it and see what happens.... Let's keep this post alive and get the bugs out!....
Got #2 onmy list fixed now i can use the HTC audio manager on my 6th tab and my windows on the today screen on the bar right underneath if i knew how to get a pic of my screen it would be easier to explain what im talkin bout...still waitin on a ROM fix or something.... or REV A

I agree 100% with you TC1.. I have similar apps listed installed on mine and have no issues. Now when I first came across HTC Home installer I did have issues with certain alerts / ringers not working. This was mainly if I had removed my SD card temporarily and at the same time received a call / alert. Of course it wouldnt sound but when I would put back the SD it still wouldnt sound so I had no choice but to reboot the device.
What I determined is setting the HTC profile to SILENT prior to removing the SD card avoids having to reboot in the invent I would get a message / alert / fone call. Since then no issues.
Also installing the more current HTC home helped out.. As ringer profiles on occasion would set itself to SILENT / VIBRATE on it own.
Ive always thought it had something to do with the 6tab HTC home plugin but i removed it and it still did it
I believe it has nothing to do with any 3rd party software but the phone (windows,HTC,Sprint) itself.... I just wish there was a way to fix it!!
Have anyone with WM5 loaded on their titan had these problems? I really wanna know y i cant use any playlist on my windows media player more then 5 times before it says file can not be found in libary when i have not moved anything
same probem quick fix
i get the same problem.
but all i do is turn it of and then turn it back on and it works great.
haven't figured out what is causing it, all i know is that it does it after i get on line. don't have any third party software on it yet so that could not be the problem. i am how ever looking for spb phone suite or anything with smson it for mobile 6. mogul titan

10 things I hate about my HD2

Hi,
My first post - sorry about the agressive title, but I really am a little frustrated with my new HD2 which I have had for about 3 weeks now. Some of the things may be due to my ignorance and others are to me clearly errors:
1) Alarm clock does not always work. I set the alarm and set the phone to silent (I use that every day). The alarm goes of, but only displays a message on the screen and no sound (which reallly does not wake me up). I tried experimenting and turning up the ringer volume and setting a new alarm. The result is that the phone uses my e-mail sound for the alarm! If I turn the phone on/off everything works fine again for a while. I have set the flag is the settings specifying that alarm should sound even i silent mode.
2) Data connectivity drop outs/malfunction. I can have all signal bars on a 3G signal and the browser gives me "Not able to display page". I've tried Opera and IE and I've also tried closing all tasks, nothing helps. If I turn the phone on/off everything works fine again for a while.
3) Not able to delete multiple mails at once. On my iPhone I can click Edit, mark the mails I want to delete and then click delete. I get a lot of spam/commercials that I delete without reading, so its a nice feature for me.
4) Keyboard is just way to sensitive - I make so many typos on the HD2 keyboard and the arrow keys are next the space key, so many times I also end up pressing those
5) Speakerphone - the volume can wake up dead people and it is not possible to turn it down (enough)
6) Dropped network connections/no access - The phone seems to switch constantly between E/H/3G connections and sometimes inbetween I just don't have network access at all, e.g. I can't make/receive calls.
7) Video recording. If there is just a little movement in the scene - I get seasick from watching the recording
8) Freeze during incoming call. The phone just freezes and the Start menu changes to: "We're sorry..." - Soft reset required...sigh!
9) Mails deleted on the phone (OUtlook/Exchange account) is kept on the server and visa versa. On my iPhone, deleting a mail on the phone or in Outlook instantly (with the next send/receive) removes it from the phone/pc. On my HD2 that does not seem to happen
10) Charging via USB/PC - I use that a lot, also on pc's that do not have ActiveSync installed. On the iPhone you can do that and when you plug it in it brings up a dialog asking what you want to do - ONCE. On the HD2 I get a messsage saying "New hardware is detected" every single time I unlock the phone e.g. to read a new message, mail etc. That is so annoying.
I'm on 1.48 and applied all three released hotfixes (Camera, SMS and SD card). I've only installed Tomtom and Navigon (trial) and nothing else.
Any help is appreciated as I'm stuck with this phone for the next 6 months.
Thanks,
Jacob

Throw it away, better yet send it to me!
I mentioned that in another thread, but I think it fits better here :
What I hate about the HD2:
1- Screen bugs. You must rely on your luck to get a good working screen
2- Voicecall quality: for some people it's acceptable but for too many others, the quality is one of the worst you can get for a 1000$ phone. Noise, crackle, distortion etc..
3- SMS loading time is miserable. HTC still is not aware of the problem or they are ignoring us because they know that their software code is buggy and needs recoding
4- Some if not most HTC devices have some hardware flaw like screen not evenly aligned with the frame that puts some question marks whether if it's going to put us into trouble in the future or not ie: top notch ( can leak water, dust, backlight, whatsoever ) or something like that http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...4&postcount=94
5- Mediocre back speaker performance. And when it rings, it really feels like a cheap phone.
6- loose keypad. That's not really a problem but sometimes it's annoying, it also feels cheap in hand although the build quality is almost excellent.
7- Poor battery life, I mean really poor. If I forget to charge it at night, forget about calling me the next day.
8- Very sharp lens frame. That's not a big deal if you keep your device in its case but if not, beware, this thing can scratch anything it touches.
That's for me, you must also note that what I wrote is subjective and based on a comparison with my old XDA and HTC devices.
Hope that clears up things.
Hi WB,
Yep - I've read most of the posts (that looked relevant) on the Leo forums for the last month or so. I'm also aware that I can e.g. install a different alarm clock, connect to the standard button/place on the screen (described on Pocketnow), I also know there is a sensitivity tweak, I can install alternative keyboards and so on, but come on should that really be necessary on a state-of-the-art phone like the HD2?
Best regards,
Jacob
yeah, I got f-****ed by the alarm clock twice .
blame myself for not testing out.
Funny, that I do not seem to have your problems in the even no. of your points 2,4,6,8,10

I gotta feeling you have totally different device man Seems this is really a question of each piece of device... E.g. I've no bugs with screen, keyboard, calls, alarm clock... Also after the official fixes and some additional patches (DAMIEN's camera fixes) the photos and video in mpeg4 is awesome (you can check out my photos on forum).
sorry for stating the obvious but maybe you actually still want an iphone. sell Leo and get an iphone 3GS mate as you clearly still stuck on iphone.I have many annoying things on mine but i am sure that customs roms will fix all these issues when we can flash them. its the same with most new devices mate, they are just not perfect and patience is needed. the raw power under the hood of this thing has not been tamed yet dude so hold tight. it took the HTC Rhodium to finally get a good blend of touchflo 3D and winmo. it will get better dude
OK, so let's try to help a bit, shall we?

Yes, that is a problem that Windows Mobile has had from the beginning. I've got no idea why they don't get that fixed, but whatever...
...there are good replacemet alarm programs, like G-Alarm and others, that are much better that the built in alarm. Try one of those.

I don't have a problem with it and I don't know a solution. Sorry.
6) Dropped network connections/no access - The phone seems to switch constantly between E/H/3G connections and sometimes inbetween I just don't have network access at all, e.g. I can't make/receive calls.

Yes that happens to me also. This is radio firmware related for sure. As said before: Watch out for radio ROM upgrades.
7) Video recording. If there is just a little movement in the scene - I get seasick from watching the recording

No problem with that. Sorry can't help.
8) Freeze during incoming call. The phone just freezes and the Start menu changes to: "We're sorry..." - Soft reset required...sigh!/QUOTE]
Disable Windows Error Reporting with BSB Config.
Error Reporting is responsible for several problems, including music player crashes and others.
9) Mails deleted on the phone (OUtlook/Exchange account) is kept on the server and visa versa. On my iPhone, deleting a mail on the phone or in Outlook instantly (with the next send/receive) removes it from the phone/pc. On my HD2 that does not seem to happen

Have you enabled push synchronization?
Every change I make on my phone Outlook gets immediately synchronized with my Exchange account and vise vers, so maybe you just have not enabled push.
Click to collapse
Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. None of my PCs brings up any message except for the first time I plug it in, but maybe that's because all of them run Windows 7.
1- Screen bugs. You must rely on your luck to get a good working screen
Click to collapse
I'm pretty sure most people have one with a good working screen
2- Voicecall quality: for some people it's acceptable but for too many others, the quality is one of the worst you can get for a 1000$ phone. Noise, crackle, distortion etc..
Click to collapse
It's not only acceptabel... it's great
3- SMS loading time is miserable. HTC still is not aware of the problem or they are ignoring us because they know that their software code is buggy and needs recoding
Click to collapse
True. But I prefer the standard WM SMS interface anyways, so what? I think HTC should not have made a replacement in the first place, now they only have problems with it...
Click to collapse
Hardware flaws? Not at all, the HD2 is probably the highest quality phone ever created. Of course that does not eliminate the possibility of production faults, but saying that 'most' devices have flaws is ridiculous.
5- Mediocre back speaker performance. And when it rings, it really feels like a cheap phone.
Click to collapse
Well, actually, according to professional tests, it's one on the better speakers among phones. Not the best, but better than e.g. the iPhone and lots of others.
6- loose keypad. That's not really a problem but sometimes it's annoying, it also feels cheap in hand although the build quality is almost excellent.
Click to collapse
That is by design. You wouldn't be able to press the keys anymore if they were not that 'loose'.
8- Very sharp lens frame. That's not a big deal if you keep your device in its case but if not, beware, this thing can scratch anything it touches.
Click to collapse
True.
Okay, now to my own list (which is a bit shorter):
1) Storage. Most people who buy the phone probably don't have a clue about hov to free up the internal memory, how to delete Youtube caches, the Copilot executable files etc. That is a huge issue, because those same people also have no clue about how to get applications from outside the Marketplace, which doesn't allow installations to the storage card. This is a huge issue for non-powerusers, and given the popularity of the phone, there's probably lots of users running into it.
2) The music player: There is no search bar or (alphabetic) scrollbar.
3) UI flaws: Swiping through TouchFlo Tabs should be fluid, like swiping through pages on the iPhone's Springboard. Scrolling in TouchFlo is not optimized, can be made a bit better via registry (speed, friction), but still laggy sometimes. Pinching in Opera is much too slow, that's much better in Safari. RSS Hub lags a lot.
4) The messaging applications. I've not had any problems so far and I've turned it off in favor of the default one anyways, but HTC should not have created it at all. The default one was okay and similar to the Email one as part of Outlook, there was nothing wrong.
5) The radio firmware - buggy as hell, that's all I have to say about it.
6) The camera flash brightness and/or exposure should adjust according to the distance of the target, which is determined by the auto focus, to prevent overexposure.
Other than that: Great phone
No phone is perfect these days, unfortunately, but this one, I think, comes closest.

I agree with you. However windows mobile devices are not as "simple" as the Iphone that I believe you have just come from. I know I risk opening up world war 3 by merely mentioning iphone in this post so let's move on quickly.
Regretably, as an early adopter, you will have to invest some considerable time tweaking the device to get it to what you thought you had bought. Most seasoned winmobile owners are used to this, hence the existence of XDA-Developers.
Once innovations like SPL/Hard SPL are with us then you will, if you wish, get the opportunity to change your roms at will and customise your device ad-nauseum. If this is not the journey you wish to take then you will have to reconsider your purchase and go for something else.
I'm definitely not being arsey, just being a realist.
Hope you make the right decision for you.

@Seed_al: This is really good stuff - thank you very much for taking the time to answer my post. I will give BSB Config a try and also G-Alarm (I really depend on the alarm to wake me up )
The tip for selecting multiple messages is also great. Another n00b question - how do you enable push for an Outlook account?
Thanks,

In fairness, he's getting (mostly) constructive responses, so if he gets answers to problems then isn't that what this whole forum is about?
I do actually agree that there are too many "slagging off" threads, but as long as something good comes from it then it's worthwhile. If someone reads it and fixes issues they have with their phone, then who cares about the people that simply agree and flog their phone. That's 1 less person whining on the forums! lol

Excellent answer and you are right - the unmentionable (is that a word) puts much harder restrictions on what can be done and by whom.
You are also spot on with the earlier adopter - I'm always doing that, not only with phones Maybe I should just see this as a new opportunity to explore the WM world I just need to sort out the most basic issues, like alarm, keyboard, mail etc. I got a 6-month contract with the phone, so I definately keeping it and I really like the hardware side of it...

Well, with a bit of luck, you'll get to see a lot more within those six months... maybe we HD2 owners will be among the first to be able to try out Windows Mobile 7
But yes, I fully agree with wacky.banana. There is a relatively high learning curve with Windows Mobile and it can't be denied that there are/were issues with the first devices/software versions that we early adopters have/had to deal with.
On the other hand, we get some great advantages over the unmentionable phone, but of course also disadvantages - there is just no perfect phone - but I personally love the HD2, think it has a lot more advantages than problems. In the end, there probably will never be a perfect phone, and it will always be a personal decision.

In fairness mate, you should have just not commented if you felt like that. You can't promote the free speech of the OP whilst telling someone not to post what they think. It's gone already, and not many people took any notice. It's no biggie, so don't make it one
Edit:
I just re-read that post and want to make it clear that I wasn't trying to tell you what to do. I just want to keep the forums as friendly as possible, so offered an opinion.
@onkeldunkel
Tap the notifications bar to bring up the notifications screen, then tap the network icon to open the comm manager. There, make sure 'Microsoft Direct Push' is activated.
If yes, then go to Start --> Connectivity --> ActiveSync (or wherever ActiveSync is in your Start Menu). There, tap on Menu --> Schedule.
This is where you can configure the Schedule for syncing with your Exchange server.
If this is set to 'as items arrive', then every change on your phone should immediately be synchronized with the server.
Let me know if it works.
@those people arguing above
I also hate all those 'I hate/sold my phone' threads, but this one here is not of that kind!
This one is not a troll thread for whining/complaining, it's a constructive thread asking for help, so please stop the fighting and don't destroy it.

Tmobile USA 1st day minor problems

So far, mostly a positive experience switching from my HTC Advantage. As expected, the capacitive thing will take a few days/weeks to adjust to, but I've found that a light touch does wonders.
Thanks to the xda-people & searching, I've found solutions to many problems I had (like tcpmp crashing till I got the correct cab). A do have a small list I'm looking for help on that I have not found a solution for.
(if I missed it in searching, sorry - please send me a link!)
- Automatic Phone profiles. I used to use SPB's Phone Suite, which isn't compatible with 6.5. I tried Phoneweaver last night and it worked very well - but is crashing all over the place today. Just sent them an email. Is anyone using an automatic volume adjuster with no problems?
- Speaking of crashing, getting the &*@%& battery lid off is a problem. Probably needs to work in a bit, but I can't do it without a mini-flat screwdrive, and I already put one scrach into the back of the case They just couldn't put it someone more accessible?
- Mentioned in another thread, but I can't seem to find any software that remaps any of the buttons (especially volume buttons). I've read that Voldpad & AEButtons work for other people, but nothing working here yet.
- My other big crashing problems seems centered around contacts. Adding them to my favorites is causing lock-ups about half the time, but when I reboot the changes took. Editing a contact (say adding a ring-tone) is also locking up the phone when I save/go back.
- Synching: probably related to contacts above. 1st synch works well. Afterwords, it is getting hung on contacts as well. If I delete the partnership is synch ok again the first time.
I think that's my big ones for now. I'm only 1 day in, and yesterday was pretty busy so I hope to have more time today to do some installs & play more.
Thanks for any help!!
Phil
PS - I didn't install any Freecell or Sudoku yet. I'm used to VGA. Anyone have a recommendation on ones that work very well with the HD2 (I didn't even google this yet, but thought I'd ask)

I hated the battery cover, until I found an easy way of lifting it up without tools.
use your right hand, and place your index finger to leverage the phone (face down) at the bottom of the phone near your buttons. (make sure you grip the back of the phone too just in case it tends to fly off)
use your left hand and have the thumb push up against the battery cover on the side with the indent in it. you should be able to lift your battery cover off without problems.
after 1-2 tries, it should be easier to lift off. I like the security knowing that it's not going to fall off, but it's really tight to get off at 1st.
Sounds similar to the video I saw on youtube. Time permitting, I plan on opening & closing the lid many times today (using screwdriver if needed) to loosen it up so I can take it off when needed.
----
In other news, I'm not using a screen-protector (yet) - need to read the thread on the protectors. I'm not too worried about scratches, but the fingerprint on the screen is worse then I thought it would be.
I'm carrying around a small microfiber now. Might have to find a small one in a sleeve or something to carry permanently. I have glasses, so I probably should have one handy anyway.
---
Next, a minor problem with Resco Pocket Player that I just read a solution to, but thought I'd post it for anyone else - you can't click on the screen to change settings in options. To get around it, bring up a keyboard with arrows & use those and enter keys instead.
--------
Finally - on the Sense Photo & Music tabs - is there an easy way I'm missing to specify and/or limit directories to look at? For now, I disabled both tabs in favor of Resco Photo Manager & Conduits Pocket Player. I did read about a hack to make Resco Photo work in sense, but haven't tried it yet.

Thats got to be one of the best typos' I've seen, I'd rather not shove my HD2 in someone though!
I'm currently reading on the Tmobile US forums about the problems with Messaging causing problems (although I've only seen it with Contacts so far). But I don't use email messaging much, just SMS (don't know if it's the same subsystem).
Anyway, going to try the suggestions of switching from HTC messaging to standing messaging (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556614) and see that is my contacts/synch problem. I wanted to post it in case any lurkers have a similar problem. Will try to post later if this helps.
yes sense messaging causes lots of freezes if you get lots of texts saved and having swype enabled agravates the problem.
ive had no issues anywhere else or with contacts

As for your last point: At least on the Photo tab, you can specify the Folder shown up: Open up HTC Album and go to the folder you want. Then hit Menu and select as Favorite. Then this folder will only be shown in Photo tab.
Just saw this: http://pocketnow.com/software-1/bug-hd2s-sense-may-freeze-with-contact-favorites
Sure enough, one of my favorites (ie, my wife) has a lot of notes & doesn't have the xml stuff. Will try the fix tomorrow.
auto speaker?
anyone else having their speaker turn on automatically during a phone call
That is one I'm not having, HectikDroid.
I did reply to another thread about calls that went straight to voice mail.
Still not connecting to weather serivce either (yet another thread with little replies).
Actually, most frustrating part is trying to find out if others are having similar problems or it's it me (either bad phone or accidental messed up setting or the like).
Glad to see pocketnow posting about the big contact problem I had.

407 ROM - how to turn off camera shutter sound? [RESOLVED]

I used to have a SHARP phone (a Japanese brand) and the camera shutter sound was mandatory (no option to turn off). They explained it's because, well, it's Japan and people use phone camera to take pictures of you-know-what parts of girls secretly in public.
I assume because our new 407 ROM is a Korean carrier ROM (and Korea is similar to Japan in that regard) so the shutter sound is made mandatory too.
GF has this phone and she's been complaining about it. It has been very annoying to her lately. And naturally she blames me for flashing her these ROMs (she's not into dev'ing or flashing stuff, she's sort of a "simple" phone user). It's probably the only problem I have with this ROM. Sometimes she just wants to take a picture quietly in public, like taking a picture of the beautiful and tasty plate of food while in a restaurant etc but the shutter sound can't be turned off.
Anyone has any suggestions?
By the way, I tried installing some third party camera app but no luck, the sound can't be turned off whatsoever. Looks like the sound is not at the app level, but rather has been built deep in the system level.
From camera app, Configuration --> Shutter Sound is missing?
You can "disable" the shutter sound by simply deleting the audio file with an file explorer and root access. That's the way I did with all my roms before
It doesn't work with the autofocus sound though, or at least I haven't found the corresponding audio file. In my opinion the autofocus sound ("beep") is far more annoying

That's a tremendously great idea. Do you still remember what the name is for the audio file that corresponds to the shutter sound?
If you turn system sounds down to zero that should disable both the shutter and auto-focus sounds. You can use a tasker profile to do this whenever the camera app runs or use a volume control app that exposes the system volume like Volume Control + or Volume Control.
Edit: No root needed for this method.

No sorry, don't remember it as i don't have it anymore. But as far as I remember there are only ~20 audio files, so you can check them by hearing in a few minutes, if the file names aren't that clear

Changed all three to 0 still no good. Shutter sound is still there after reboot.
OK I see what's going on. GF repeatedly told me there's no such setting in camera app. I just double checked, there is.
In Camera settings, the rightmost setting, scroll it down to the bottom, there's a setting to let you turn off the shutter sound. So problem solved.
Sorry again for being a complete idiot.
oh yea i forgot to say the last part, setting those to 0 will make that option appear in the camera app now, that entry is removed when the line is set to 1
I see. Thanks. So it was indeed because of your solution. Thanks.

[Q] Remove Camera Click Sound

Heya, new to fiddling with root files but really wanted to get rid of camera click. Followed advice about renaming camera_click.ogg in terminal Emulator using:
ADB shell
SU
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mv /system/media/audio/ui/camer_click.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg.old
(source: www droidforums net/forum/droid-hacks/23107-droid-remove-camera-click-shutter-sound html) - sorry new poster not allowed to post url
Now have issue when open stock camera and vid in Motorola Atrix (gingerbread 2.2.2) where:
1) camera opens, but have lost all previous images.
2) camera takes silent shot
3) camera 'locks' open and can't return to 'desktop', can't view image taken,, can't access menus etc
Basically camera is stuffed...
is there a solution, is there code to go back and follow some of the other advice in here etc?
It is a setting. What's the point?

To anyone else, i'd appreciate any help or advice. As i mentioned i'd just like to undo what i've done usibg script i found on another forum. looking forward, hopefully, to hearing from you!
have you tried to add the following line to local.prop file located in /data?
ro.camera.sound.forced=0
If you don't have the file then just create the file and add it, otherwise append it to the end of file.
File permission is: 0644
Good Luck
I never heard of adding ".old" on the end of the file. I always add ".bak", then reboot. Works everytime.

I was on my phone at the time (tiny keyboard) and was trying to succinctly say that if you open the camera app and touch "settings", there is an option to quiet the click.
When I first read your OP I didn't notice that you identified Gingerbread as v2.2. You are confused. v2.2 was named Froyo (frozen yogurt). Gingerbread is v2.3. My answer relates to Gingerbread. If you are actually on Froyo, I don't remember if the setting was available on that release.
So, in Gingerbread silencing the camera is a setting and there is no point performing internal surgery.
Yep, ok, noob blunder. Novice blunder, amatuer, beginner whatever blunder. Glad you all got a giggle, and thanks for pointing it out. I was told at the shop it's Gingerbread. The About phone states 2.2. So, if that makes it Froyo then great, i've learnt the basics today. Thanks for your help again!
Well re- the settings, froyo or otherwise, yes there is a setting to turn sound off. You turn it to off and it still makes the click sound, volume can't be altered. Hence diving off the deep end and into something i know very little about - internal surgery!!

Do you have root? If yes, then you can just use any file manager that has root access, ES File Explorer works I've heard, and just go to the folder where the sound file is (/system/media/audio/ui) and just select to rename the file and add ".bak".

Live4nyy - is there a simple way to rename to .bak (you see my level of expertise here - none! - in asking).. forward some script for me at all?
or
CSharpHeaven that sounds gr8... any way to explain to a complete novice how to do that?

i actually dont want or need to silence it again. my query is how to restore my camera to a mode where it is functional bcs at the moment its stuffed. If theres a simple string to go back that'd be ideal.

Ok, got 'root explorer'... so simple just to enable R/W and rename.. Thanks. Changed to .bak . Seems better, actually appears to take photos and has more functionality than after i ran that script... but
I don't know what that original script did. Here's what using my built in camera is like:
1) Turn Camera on. Opens, appears normal. Take photo fine. Thumbnail (link to camera roll) in bottom corner as per usual, which disappears after a few seconds as per normal.
So far so good.
2) After taking another photo decide to click on thumbnail to open camera roll. Camera Roll opens but says there are no pictures to display. return (via 'back' menu button) and the thumbnail of the images is there again. Ok, weird.
3) Try take another photo... nothing happens, wait a few seconds and camera switches off back to ;desktop'. Try open camera again but no dice. In fact all phone functionality gone, frozen, locked up, including menu buttons below screen. Put phone to sleep by pressing rear button briefly. Press rear button again to awake. Unlock swipe is slow to respond (a few seconds) and then back to main desktop screen. Can once again open camera. Repeat process from dot point 1).
4) next time go to camera roll, this time locks up on camera roll (which has no images to display again). Sleep and wake up camera, slow swipe unlock, can take photos again when open camera. repeat step 1 - 3 again!
5) Sleep, wake up phone. This time straight to gallery instead of camera. Gets stuck telling me it's loading media files. Frozen.
6) sleep- wake - slow swipe unlock. This time to video. Same thing as camera. Frozen.
I could go on.... but im sure the idea is clear!
used root explorer to simply remane camera_click.ogg to original name. Same as above
Tried camera zoom fx app incase it was the built in camera app. This won;t even open - well, it starts but then says i need to force it to close.
Does this need a factory reset??!
Ta
Have you rebooted? Maybe try and go into "Manage Applications" under the "All" tab and find the camera and "clear data"?

Thanks L4NYY.. yep had rebooted. Tried clearing data but all the same
Had a quick look in the internal storage DCIM folder..All files appear to be there. The one vid file has a play button icon. The .jpg's have the android robot icon. I don't know what was there before. Trying to open the files from here freezes the phone.....
Connecting usb and viewing dcim shows that any images taken since the change to camera_click.ogg appear unknown thumnails in the PC explorer..and can't be opened on the PC via USB connection or when stored locally on the PC itself 'can't display this is an empty file' . This is probably all irrelevant but might be useful to someone, somehere...
Have just noticed today that battery was going flat very quickly. Realised since rooting and using that script (can't decipher which) that location services are no longer working, hence apps that provide location services are continually searching and draining battery. Yes i can turn those services off, but wouldrather resolve the issue!
I'm thinking more and more like factory reset Any thoughts?
Just factory reset. Used Astro File Manager to backup apps before hand, which for interest worked well (although did have to reinstall one by one). Of course Appstore keeps a lsit of purchased apps as a failsafe for thsoe.
After rest, reinstalled apps, including Root Manager. Simply followed Live4NYY's advice, renamed camera_click.ogg to camera_click.ogg.bak
All issues described earlier resolved. Camera functional and silent.
just goes to show sometimes you should ask noob questions. I tried following instructions on a post to avoid annoying the experts with a mum-mum dad-dad question! Anyhow, thnaks to live4nyy for taking the time.
Ciao
The ".bak" just stands for "backup". It will essentially hide any file/app and keep it from running (which in turn frees up RAM). So if you had a system app that you don't use you can just add ".bak" and it would be the same as freezing it. It's much safer than deleting files and apps as you can always go back and remove the extension (and reboot) and it will be back to normal.
