USB port fried? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

hello,
after flashing my universal (vpa IV, see sig) with tomals 6.1 21028 BETA 2 build, i noticed that the usb port doesnt seem to be working anymore. im not sure whether tomals rom caused that, but if i try to connect my device to active sync / flash it i just get a "unknown USB device" error from XP, just like if the uni was booting up. if i try to flash ANYTHING, i would get a "CE ROM UPGRADE ERROR" (error 112). i've tried it on 2 PCs, with 2 USB cables. both machines are win xp 32bit with active sync 4.5...
ohh by the way: it even doesnt work on bootloader mode! keep getting the same error ( yep i took SIM + SD card out )
thanks in advance, hope someone has a solution!
EDIT: is there a way to flash ROM / Radio from SD Card? how? i could sync over bluetooth and stay with flashing from sd card instead of repairing the usb port
EDIT2: alright i found it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393370
EDIT3: i cant get it to work! i've tried with a 256mb SD card, and with a 2gb sd card. at the 256mb card the recovery will just abort at 19%... HELP

bump...
could anyone with a 64mb ram G3 uni bootloader version 1.00 and a 128mb MMC or a 256mb SD upload the bootloader for me? would be great! just do this on mtty:
connect to the device on USB / WCEUSBH001
type:
USB>task 32
USB>d2s 70000000 80000
(INSERT SD NOW!)
(Please notice the blank space between d2s and address, sd )
if it shows "store image to SD / MMC card successful.", the bootloader upload was successful.
after doing this, just give me the bootloader ( which is, as i guess just like at the pc the first 512bs (including part. table)
so, get this tool: http://www.chrysocome.net/downloads/dd-0.5.zipunzip it for example to C:\ then go to start -> run and type in "cmd", now press enter.
type in C: and press enter.
now type cd dd-0.5 and you should be on the folder where dd is. check whether it is by typing in dir. then do dd --list and look for the SD card. for example if its shown as:
\\.\Volume{f87b78e3-0c04-11de-be63-806d6172696f}\
link to \\?\Device\HarddiskVolume4
fixed media
Mounted on \\.\d:
now type in: dd if=\\.\d: of=g3.bin bs=512 count=1 press enter.
now you have the file containing the mbr of the SD card. upload this one in a zip file / whatever, that would be really great! thanks!
EDIT: tomals tool may also work to dump the header!
sdread.exe -p G: start 416 sd.bin
here G: is the drive letter of your sd card and sd.bin is the file-name, please modify them accordingly. it would write the 416 bytes from your sd to the file.

sorry: http://www.chrysocome.net/downloads/dd-0.5.zip

hmm just a little update: the data port on the usb connector is DEFINITELY broken. maybe its also the USB "controller"? i connected the phone to linux (running wm) and got "Unable to read/64 device descriptor error=-71" every time i connected the device.
so i went into the busy box on the phone and connected it again. it gave me EXACTLY the same error messages, and "USB reset!" on the phone dmesg. what should i do? i already checked the USB connector on the M/B and it was good!

bump.... still have the problem

Sorry, was on holiday. Please find attached from Tomal 8.7 on 256MB miniSD

There was some chip that had blown, and it was replaced.

write GSM ROM to SD
Hi ...
Could you please kindly explain how to 'actually' run the bootloader command?
I mean: do we run it from within the bootlader on the device? or do we have to connect the device to a PC through the cradle/ activesync or through a serial cable?
If must be run from the PC, what application (from Windows) do we need to install?
Thanks a lot in advance...
-Andhy
on a windows pc you need to connect the xda with a serial cable, and connect with some terminal program, like hyperterm, or securecrt.
or program connecting to \\.\WCEUSBSH001 your self, if you want to connect over usb.
under linux it should be no problem to connect your terminal program to the usb serial line.
put the xda in bootloader mode, by holding down the power button, and navigator button together, while resetting the device with the pen in the little hole on the bottom left.
you will lose all your date when you do this
Itsme: Many thanks...greatly appreciate your kind response.
Please allow to ask some more questions, I hope it's not too annoying
1. what's the name of the application for connecting thru USB? You mentioned "...program connecting to \\.\WCEUSBSH001 ..." sorry I need some guidance in this. Linux may be not an option for me as I have no accesss nor experience with one.
2. Is there any possibility for you to post the GSM ROM image (preferably for 900/1800)? Since we will loose data when doing this connecting application, I won't be able to ask some one to lend their working xda to do this. It would scare all them off.
THanks again for your kind help ....
Cheers...
you can use my xda2dmp app posted here earlier.
but as I said, under windows there are no apps that I know of that will allow you to connect to other serial ports than COM1 .. COMxxx
so serial over usb is only available to you if you program it yourself.
the gsm rom image is available in the upgrade, in radio.nbf
see also http://www.xs4all.nl/~itsme/projects/xda/xdaii-update-format.html
Hmmm... no hope for me... I have got no idea about programming communication stuff like that...
Thanks for the info about radio.nbf. I thought this one was only for XDA2 as it is filed under XDA2 title.
sorry if this may sound stupid, but is it possible to flash this radio.nbf from SD card using the XDA OSimage tool?
yes, radio.nbf is only xda-2
to avoid confusion, now I also set the xda-ii icon on this thread
GSM ROM for xda
could you please guide me to get a GSM ROM for xda?
my xda lost the GSM part since unsuccesful RSUpgrade (after upgrading to TMobile ROM 4.01.0, I accidentally chose the GSM1900 band in the phone- then the phone was not working, and then I tried to flash with an O2 RSUpgrade- but did not sucessful - resulting a total loss of the GSM part - the Radio stack and Protocol version were not shown during splash screen).
So far, I have been trying to fix the GSM using all kind of methods and using almost all sort of tools. No luck, always ended up at the RSUpgrade 1% Flash Failed screen.
I hope you could guide me a bit in this matter. Sorry , if I posted this question in this thread..

Have you checked out FTDI? They provide a USB driver that can be driven as a virtual COM port. On the XDA side I can't provide any references.
Join and write all rom in one SDcard ?
Dear Itsme,
Can I type the following commands to write all rom"gsm+ext.rom+bootloader+os rom" to same one 64MB / 128MB sd card ?
--------------------------------------------------------
write the gsm rom to your SD card.Code:
d2s 60000000 400000
write the extended rom to sd cardCode:
d2s 70000000 1f20000
write the bootloader + os rom to sd cardCode:
d2s 80000000 2000000
-------------------------------------------------------
If not, how can I do that ?
What differents of the commands as following:
--------------------------------------------------------
first copy the first 3 M of the radio to sd:
d2s 60000000 00300000
and now append the extended rom to the sd card:
d2s 70080000 01000000 sd a
---------------------------------------------------------
many thanks !
you have to add 'sd a' to the appending commands. without 'sd a' each command will start writting at the start of the sd card.
other than that, your commands will make a complete backup of all roms.
questions to bootloader
Hello,
kindly excuse my English.
After the final ROM Update, I´ve made, the updatesoftware doesn´t change the bootloader. Is this correct ?
(I have updated from 1.60.00GER O2 to 1.72 iMate without problems)
At http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HimalayaBootloaderVersions I´ve found different bootloaders. Whats the differents between the several versions ?
It´s possible to change the bootloader and it´s useful ?
Thats a lot of questions. I'm looking forward to read your reply

SD format itself! WTF!

holy crap! i duno what happened, but i tired to check my stuff today and my storage card was empty!
i just lost a **** load of stuff, when when i try to sync with active sync, it won't put my stuff back on my phone!!! WTF!?
i really need all my notes and calender stuff back!
how do i get them back?
can someone please tell me where active sync stores this!
thanks!
help ASAP!!!
please help! this is very work related documents!
what s your PDA?
it happens alot to xda mini.
try datarecovery software.
try GetDataBack for FAT.
search on google.
Try this:
- format your card
From a PC (win2k or xp) use: FORMAT <DRIVE:> /FS:FAT32 /X /A:4096
Depending on your sd card size FAT16 is not a good option. A 1Gb card with FAT16 has already 16Kb clusters. So writing a file of 1 Kb loses the other 15Kb.
As the Cards come bigger and bigger the cluster size increases also with FAT16. The BlockTransferSize stands for the maximum number of blocks that can be transferred per bus transfer. As the blocks (clusters) grow bigger the PDA has to push more data per bus transfer. Decreasing the BlockTransferSize corrects that.
- start a registry editor on you PDA
- Change the DWORD values:
HKLM\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Class\MMC_Class
BlockTransferSize from 0x40 to 0x20 (max 32 blocks per bus transfer)
SingleBlockWrites 0x1 (non extisting)
HKLM\Drivers\SDCARD\ClientDrivers\Class\SDMemory_Class
BlockTransferSize from 0x40 to 0x20 (max 32 blocks per bus transfer)
SingleBlockWrites 0x1 (non extisting)
- soft reset and isert the card
Hope it helps. Did solve all my problems with the card ;O)
I'm gonna have to try that...
I've lost my stuff to my SD twice already. Once it is a total SD wipe. Another time it is a Program File directory wipe. that's why I keep my notes and stuff on active syn while having some relatively constant stuff (e.g. programs, books) on my SD, and I do a backup of the SD itself.
Anyway, I heard that, if you have a SD-card reader for the PC, you can get your stuff back by using those memory-card-data-recovery software.
Just to confirm. If you check the diskspace of your SD card, you ought to see the missing space. That is, although you not have anything on your SD, the free space available is way far less than it suppose to be (e.g. a 512MB SD with nothing on it, but only has 30MB free space). In a way, the data is still in there, you just can't see it. That's what I've got when I got my SD wipe, but I didn't try to recover it as the stuff I had in the SD doesn't worth the trouble getting a memory-card-data-recovery software.

what do u mean by 0x20? and 0x40? and what does "non extisting" mean?
thanks
its Hex Dec numbers in total Commander you can choses Decimal or Hex, you have to chose Hex
mine is already at 20 by defualt.
but i can't find SingleBlockWrites do i have to create it?
thanks
not sure about that one, cus mine does not have it too!!!
Here are a few (undocumented) tweaks that control the SDCard loading.
I managed to get the "Do you want to format the card" with a healthy card when playing with these params.
HKLM\Drivers\SDCARD\SDBusDriver
"PowerUpPollingInterval"=dword:000001F4 (500 msecs)
"PowerUpPollingTime"=dword:000003E8 (1000 msecs)
These values are read live when the card is inserted. No soft boot required. If the times are not correct you won't see your SD card or it askes for a Format. Don't do that! Change the values and insert your card again.
Also might consider this one (soft boot required):
HKLM\Drivers
"NotifyPriority256"=dword:000005A
EDIT:
HKLM\System\StorageManager
"PNPThreadPrio256"=dword:0000050
"PNPUnloadDelay"=dword:00005DC (1500msec)
"PNPWaitIODelay"=dword:0000BB8 (3000msec)

sandisk sdcard error after rom backup

hello!
i have a huge problem with my sd card.
i tryd to backup my current rom using command "d2s" and it worked fine so far, checksum ok and all that.
then i removed the card and put it into my pc (cardreader)
trying to read the rom, it says:
C:\>ntrw read OriginalROM.nb1 G:
NTRW v2.00
Removeable media
Cylinders: 0:0
TracksPerCylinder: 1
SectorsPerTrack: 16
BytesPerSector: 512
bufsize is 65536
0 bytes written Res: 0 bytes: 0
ReadFile(): OriginalROM.nb1 -- The parameter is incorrect.
I my eyes, its strange that it says "0:0" Cylinders.
At the end, the tool never read something from my card. i gave it up then
Finally, trying to format my 1gb-card with windows, it worked and i could write/read the card.
BUT:
In my PPC, it says, the card is not formated and when i choose, yes my dear, make me a filesystem, it works in PPC, but no more in windows!
Whats the problem? It worked fine before making the boot-loader-rom-backup thing...
Anyone some tips?
(Sorry for my bad english )
Hello friend,
As long as its recognized by your PPC, its not a big problem your stuck with. Try re-formatting your card in your PPC and check if it works in PC!
Regards
Carty..
Hello,
thank you for answering me.
As i wrote above, after formating the card with the PPC, its not readable with the pc, and the other way the same...
I think something with the partition table or sth like this is broken! i dont know why i cant get it work with both at the same time. As a mess, my linux does not support my cardreader so i cant perform any deeper analyse...
edit: i used Pocket Mechanic with various settings to format the card, low-level too... but nothing helps getting me recognize it with my windows-pc.

Chances are that the device needs to be SuperCID (Seclevel=0) before you can use the 'd2s' command.
If the device is not SuperCID it means that it is locked?
I read that the command "task 32" should return "Level = FF" if the device is locked - however "task 32" returns nothing here:

Just noticed that it says cStoragePlatformType=FF ... so it's a locked device? How can I unlock it?

Happy XMAS :
Go and get your WM7 or Android goldcard for free :
Link to the goldcard generator
In order to use the WM7 goldcard, just use an Host USB Cable (Developer Y-Cable) and connect a sdcard reader to it.
Edit :
For those who do not understand how to use the goldcard :
- Use any sdcard and a wm5 or android device to make the goldcard (Yet we do not know how to read the cid using WM7)
- Buy a Mini USB On the go Y-Cable like this one :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLOCK-USB-...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1292614709&sr=8-1
Also buy a converter from standard usb to micro usb.
OR build a usb otg host cable by yourself.
- Get an external usb sdcard reader
- Connect the cable this way : Phone is connected to 1x usb sdcard reader and 1x usb port for power.
Then you can use your newly generated goldcard for flashing any HTC OEM Rom

1-Found the CID of your card.
insert your micro sd into an android device (i've do this on hd2)
connect it to your computer as disk drive with usb debug on
then press get cid into Gold Card Tool.exe
we need reversing CID to create img .
2-Generate goldcard.img
go to the link provide by Gold Card Tool.
add your mail, the CID and select Windows mobile 7
Press the Generate button
the goldcard.img is send to your mail box.
Load it to Gold Card Tool
select your android storage letter & press patch MMC.
3-Found HTC original Rom for your Device
Extract exe with winrar then rename Ruu_signed.nbh
to
-Sparimg.nbh for Trophy
-SCHUIMG.nbh for Schubert
- MONDIMG.nbh for Mondrian
- MOZAIMG.nbh for Mozart
copy it to your freshly created goldcard.
4-connect usb cable except the one for the wp7
boot your device into usb host mode(volume down + camera on Trophy)
and connect the last usb cable.
the screen of your wp7 look like this if all work.
with this you can flash official HTC rom on your Vodafone ,O2,Orange...operator device.
i have also flash Spl from official rom to my vodafone Trophy by this way but always a vendor id error with the official updater!!
i'm searching why!

Cees.
To get your CID you need a wm 6.* phone and PSAS http://psas.revskills.de/
1) format your sd-card (fat32 and not bigger then 1GB) and put it in a wm6.* phone and sync it with the pc.
2) Install PSAS and run as admin.
3) goto calculators/generators
4) goto select a device key (pick any)
5) hit the "get sd card serial from WINCE device"
6) copy the generated key and paste it in "SD Card Serial (CID): *"on the goldcard generator web-page.
If you buy the software you can make your goldcards yourself http://psas.revskills.de/?q=payment

Basically the cable I used was a 2 USB Y to Mini USB Cable - they normally come with portable 2.5inch hard drives - I bought a Female to Female USB Coupler earlier on in the day which then allowed me to chain my micro USB cable so the phone could be plugged in. Initially I was trying the card reader I had for flashing but it wasnt working, probably because it was a multi reader and not just SD. After XboxMod said he managed to do it directly from his WM6 phone I decided to try this (I have a HTC Diamond 2 and a HTC Touch Pro).
I tried all evening with a 2gb MicroSD card, but it didnt work at all. So in the end I used a 1GB MicroSD.
Anyway this is basically what I did, its late now over here so I'll be brief.
I had problems with PSAS in getting the SD CID, so in the end used my girlfriends Android phone and a cool little utility called goldcard helper (or something to that name) when I compared it with the results I was getting in PSAS the issue seemed to be that PSAS was reversing the CID as required, but instead of my digits been two 0's at the start like they should have been, they were two 2's instead. So I dont know if that helps anyone, if they have similar problems. More testing is probably needed.
I formatted the memory card to FAT32.
I used Windows Mobile for all this process so once again in PSAS I went into the WINCE card tools while the phone was set to ActiveSync and then selected write image file and chose the goldcard.img
Once this was done I then switched back to diskmode, copied goldcard.img to the storage card (not sure if this is needed) and then copied the HTC_Europe ROM for the device. I then renamed it to SCHUIMG.nbh.
I plugged the mini USB into the end of my Y Cable, and plugged power into from a USB on my PC. Then lastly booted into USB Host mode on the HD7 (power, volume down, camera) - make sure you keep it held down right until the screen comes up.
It then stats on the screen SCHUIMG.nbh and begins flashing - takes about 10 minutes - at the end of it I now have a unbranded HD7
Thanks to the help of xboxmod this evening, and thanks to the original poster for pointing out the WP7 goldcard method.

thanks , but I am still working on the first post.
I could make a WP7 app to display the CID if you like?

That would be great! Please do make one! I'll deeply appreciate it!

that isn't possible I think because we need the CID from the external sd card .
we use the external sd card for flashing.
the internal sd card is of no use for flashing .
it would be better to make a simple app that can find the cid from sd cards connected to the pc.
I found that the easiest way for me to get the CID was to put the microSD in my Android phone (SE X10 mini) and download a small app for it. Easy way to do it if you have an Android phone lying around at home.

OK, so, I have gotten the CID of the card using the above method, gone to the site, gotten my goldcard image sent, then using PSAS to write the goldimage file to the card (as I don't have a android phone) which is says was succesful, only thing is I can't copy the rom onto it as the card is not not being detected as formatted.
Huh?

do you have a sd card reader ?
if so then format it using your pc and copy the .img (goldcard) and the *.nbh on the sd card .
only use tools to get the cid , ( you can copy everything manually )
Oh, so I don't write the image to the card, I just copy that img file and the rom nbh onto the sd card?

What size SD card are you using?
don't use a bigger card then 1GB .
Just a 1GB MicroSD Card

then just format as fat 32 and copy all to the sd , rename RUU.... to mentioned in the first post .
and then follow the instructions
Cool, thanks, got a cable that will do it and a sd card reader, just need to wait for a female to female USB connector to be delivered tomorrow and then I'm set to go, then I'm just gonna flash the latest HTC Europe ROM onto it with the latest Radio, etc. It's a O2 HD7 at moment.

just remember one thing : radio numbers don't say anything on HTC (higher numbers don't mean newer )
also locations can get different radios .

I wouldnt bother mate, I have a O2 HD7 and flashed the European ROM, and have now gone back to O2 ROM.
The keyboard is set to US layout, and can only be changed to a couple of other languages, which means characters like £ are missing and thus quite an annoyance really.
I didnt spot any other things but I dont understand why HTC Europe ROM would be like this, I'd assume this would be what you'd get on a unbranded model straight from somewhere like Expansys but its not the case according to ansar - take a look at the last couple of pages of this thread for more information:

Cheers
Not so much bothered about the missing £ Symbol, and to be honest I think I'm actually gonna flash the Telstra ROM and then the Europe Radio package like in point number 8 on his instructions which will let me play with this interesting stuff that comes with that ROM, whilst still having a European radio set.
Oh, and I agree, I don't see why all english roms would not have a US Keyboard & UK Keyboard layout. Seems like common sense to me. Maybe not lol ........
Ok, I've got no idea in what format your goldcard generator would like its CID or SD card serial number, but I tried all kinds of common notations of printed and embedded serial numbers which always gave me a "please enter a valid cid".
Here's a dump from a 512MB microSD card I had lying around:
