Attachments with Exchange E-Mail - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

Have searched the Diamond Forum extensively, but not found mention of this problem.
My Exchange E-Mail from WM6.1 refuses to download (or at least open) attachments. This happens with .doc .docx .pdf .xls .xlsx attachments. These attachments open without a problem, when I use another two e-mail accounts using imap, the problem only occurs when synchronising with my Exchange Server.
It looks as if the attachment is being downloaded, but it doesn't then open. I have posted this on the Vodafone Forum (post 50578 and update 135471), and one other person reported the same problem, but no solutions were forthcoming. I have just installed the latest ROM, without effect.
Any suggestions ?
Rom Version : 1.97.161.4 WW
Rom Date : 10/26/08
Radio version : 1.08.25.08
Protocol version 52.44.25.24U

Does tapping and holding on the attachment and hitting "Save as..." work?

If the above suggestion does not work then there could be an issues with your provider

Thanks for the suggestion but Save As does nothing.
If I tap the attachemnt, a green arrow appears next to it, and the "Downloading..." message appears at the bottom of the screen, but when it finishes, the Attachment reverts to a blank grey icon next to the filename, rather than the icon representing the application.
This leads me to believe the device downloads the attachment, but for some reason it is not being saved, or the linked program is not being invoked. In \Internal Storage\Inbox.mst29991181.1156583424\Mail Attachments, I can see several zero size *.att files
The provider Vodafone say this is not a widely reported problem, but at least one other User on their Forum has reported it.

Can you not contact the exchange admin and ask to see the error log? is it a work or hosted exchange server(2003 or 2007)?
How about a hard reset? extreme you might say but can help.

Sounds like an exchange server problem. You should contact your exchange admin to see if they can change any policies related to that.

Thanks for the responses.
I AM The Exchange Adminstrator ! I don't think the problem lies there, as e-mail sent to my previous PDA (Vodafone 1605),and e-mails still sent to one of my colleagues 1605 don't demonstrate the same problem. The problem is only rpesent on the Diamond.
I have also tried several hard resets, together with a ROM Flash Updates, to no avail.

Process of elimination
As you tried hard resets and other roms it might be a network issue?
Why not try using a trial on 4smartphone.com (14 days free) and if that works then you no its not the device.
Have you even tried a different SIM card?

What version of Exchange are you running? 2k7 can control the size and amount of mail you're retrieving via EAS policy, plus if you can download attachments or not.
Then again, since you're ok with EAS on a tytn, then it must be the phone or network. Have you tried swapping SIMs to eliminate the possibility of content filtering on the network side?
I've never had any trouble with EAS and I've tried plenty of other ROMs, and I'm the vodafone network also - you tried any of the newer custom ROMs to eliminate that?

We are running SBS2003 Premium SP2, and Exchange Reports Version 6.5.7638.1
I have tried the SIM from the TyTn that downloads ok in that PDA, it doesn't in the Diamond.
I have the latest official ROM from the Vodafone website, don't really want to upgrade with unofficial ROM's in case I brick the phone.
Just as an update, by watching carefully as the phone tries to collect the Attachment, the initial message "Downloading..." is temporarily followed by "Loading Message ...", which quickly dissappears, and the logo against the attachment changes back from the green download arrow to the grey logo.

I don't have that ticked and I still get attachments - i think this option is for downloading the file instead of clicking on it later.
@pcibob
I know some Vodafone ROMS are buggy. for example my friend has an X1 for which he uses M$ Live - MSN etc. if he installs TomTom the the MSN live stops working - how wierd is that.
Take the blunge and customise your ROM it is really stright forward, this may help.

It doesn't matter if this is ticked or not (I have tried both). I understand this tick means that the attachment will be dowloaded WITH the mail, whilst if it is unticked it should be able to download the Attachment AFTER the mail, if required. Both don't work !

Was asking as I had the same problem with another device and only work around I found was to have it unticked, tap onto attatchment to download, go to comm manager turn flight mode on and off and it would download, strange but it worked. not sure would do the same for you, sorry if it doesnt

I am seriously considering updating the ROM with a non Vodafone version. Any suggestions as to which ROM to try ? I would like to hear from other Vodafone Users if this has caused them any problems. I am a bit nervous about bricking the phone.

I would go for this option.
There is plenty of help here if you need it.
I have flashed at least 15 diamonds fro my work and countless other devices. Now if I can do it .
1) install Olipro Hard-spl.1.93 Download and extract , click on RUU - follow instructions - when confirmed an application wants to run on your device. (click YES to allow) this process takes a few MINS and the screen goes blank for a while. Do not touch device until the RUU states finished (the phone should restart anyway)
2) if you wish to confirm the installation of Hard-SPL the hold down the down-arrow volume key during reset or start-up process, you should be presented with a RGB and white screen with
"DIAM100"
"SPL_1.93. Olinex
(thats Olipro and Cmonex-combined forum users)
Thats confirmation enough.
3) restart device again. and pick a ROM (Recommendation from me would be this Shaks1979 ROM (download and extract - Run RUU) similar to step one.
4) restart your phone and enjoy life without the vodafone poop. hopefully you exchange will work.
4a) its very easy to revert back to standard stuff
Take the plunge.........

One final question. Will the Vodafone Sat-Nav reload and work ? I have it in a CAB file, but am unsure if it needs to 'see' the Vodafone ROM to work. Has anyone else installed a new ROM, then put their Vodafone Sat-Nav back on successfully?
The main reason I bought the Diamond is that it converged the things I need most i.e phone, Sat-Nav, PDA and camera.
Thanks for the help

WM2003 & T-Mobile ???

Anyone have a ROM of WM2003 that works w/ T-mobile USA? I tried about 5 and no luck. XDA dev Rom works great and so does my old one, but can't find a 2003 rom that works. All either hang at the boot/welcome screen or don't boot.
--Mike
So far I have tried 3 different 2003 roms.
The first the "O2" rom loaded, but gave me some intermittent problems.
The second “For Testing Only” rom worked great. Only one small problem with Microsoft reader. I most likely wouldn’t have changed except that the new ROMkitchen got me more excited than it probably should have.
Now I am using the ROMkitchen version very happily….(same problem with the reader though)
Interesting because I tried the ROMkitchen version yesterday and got the same, hangs on welcome screen result. Did you do anything special other than put it on SD with XDArit? I have Wallaby 5.15 bootloader which I think is what the unit shipped with but from what I've read this is fine.
I'm just at a loss because I've tried most everything I can think of. Which file type did you select from the ROMkitchen? I grabbed the nb1. Should I try NBF? Does it matter what I put in the "header string" at the bottom of the ROMkitchen page? I noticed when I try to upgrade it says my device is PW10B1. Does that matter?
Maybe you can post or email me your ROM and I can try that today.
--Mike
I didn't use the SD card boot with the Kitchen rom version. I had the Kitchen create an .exe file and let it load through usb. I actually did it 2 times...and it worked both times. Just did it the second time after they fixed PocketMVP.
I will e-mail it to you if you want, but I think that you should try creating an .exe through the Kitchen first...since that is what I would e-mail anyway.
Scott
The Hang that you see may be caused by the simtoolkit loading on startup. Try removing the link in the windows startup folder. that may help
My fellow T-Mobile WM2003 users, I have been using all 3 versions successfuly with no freezups. There is a little trick that increases stability when on the US networks:
Go to your \Windows\StartUp\ directory and DELETE Ussd.lnk and STK.lnk.
These are autoconfiguration apps that work with European providers but do nothing for the T-Mobile network; so much so, that with the T-Mo original ROM these apps were not used at all.
When these apps run in T-Mo's (Cingular's) network here in Los Angeles area, I've even experienced random cold resets when switching cell sites.
Ok, sounds like that's the problem then, but how do I remove this from the startup if I can't get it to go past the welcome screen? Can I bould a ROM in the kitchen w/o these options? I only saw an option for where to "move" these apps and not an option to not have them installed at all.
--Mike
Sorry, the kitchen doesn't allow you to do that. If you know how, you can burn your own rom and exclude these items. Anyone know what ussd is for? As mentioned, i have deleted the toolkit link and have not had any problems, just curious as to what ussd is.

Now it does...
Check the new 'Remove 'stk.lnk' from Startup folder' option. If someone tells me what ussd is and why it's bad, I'll add it to the remove list for this option...
Tried the new ROM w/ stk.lnk
Ok, I tried the new ROM and still no luck. Tried it as both .exe and as a SD flash and get the same net result. System hangs after bringing up the radio stack version and OS version as well as the third number which is: G324e4.
This device flawlessly runs the 3.17 xda ROM as well as T-mobile 3.14 so I don't understand why it will not take any 2003 ROM successfully. Any more ideas?
USSD
Unstructured Supplementary Services Data
USSD is a means of transmitting information or instructions over a GSM network. USSD has some similarities with SMS since both use the GSM network's signaling path. Unlike SMS, USSD is not a store and forward service and is session-oriented such that when a user accesses a USSD service, a session is established and the radio connection stays open until the user, application, or time out releases it. This has more in common with Data than SMS. USSD text messages can be up to 182 characters in length.
STK is for SIM ToolKit - It should not cause any problems unless you have a really old SIM Card.
I think USSD is basicaly a thing for ie. GSM banking - it allows the network to send you binary SMSes deciphered by the SIM (when I login with my GSM key to a bank account, I receive a message with temporary password, it is not sent through ordinary SMS, but delivered to the SIM toolkit area which is protected by PIN)

xda-developers,
might be a stupid question but, i checked the command to remove stk.lnk from startup in (one of the reigstry hacks) and the command is the same as to add object. how do u remove it from startup, is it based on the file name. this one has rmobj extension.

Magician and Blue Angel GPRS “Cannot Connect” Fix

After watching for months the issues that many have suffered over this problem, I finally found a solution that will fix all the woes.
A few months ago I was one of the many here that upgraded to 1.11 ROM, had the problem. It drove me crazy to the point that I went back to the 1.06 ROM that was rock solid. Well the other day I did a hard reset to have a clean slate. While looking at the Extended ROM I saw the file DefaultV_1.12 in the EXT Rom (Compared 1.11 ROM on FTP to my device). This was the same file that a XDA developer member had modified to somewhat solve the GPRS problem a few months ago.
At this point I had a hypothesis, so I pulled the same file from the older 1.06 ROM which was rock solid and did not have the “Cannot Connect” problem. In this EXT ROM it is named Default_Version_WWE_106150.sa.CAB.
Installed it first on my Blue Angel as a guinea pig, then for the next three hours I would sit there and disconnect and reconnect. I did it manually by holding the red button to disconnect, then I would reconnect to another webpage, then would have a call come in while in the middle of the GPRS session which would suspend it. After done with the phone call I would reconnect manually by clicking connect as well as by just hitting a link on the webpage.
The Results: No “Cannot Connect” problem.
So off I went to my Magician:
Upgraded to 1.11(I have 850 JAM)
Installed Default_Version_WWE_106150.sa.CAB
Put the phone through its paces, I have been disconnecting and reconnecting without a single problem. I receive phone calls that suspend the GPRS session and I am able to reconnect without a problem. Activesync is able to make OTA connections without a hitch.
During my trials I used the same programs:
Which included:
Photo Contacts(newest version)
Activesync
WEBIS Mail 2
xVbar
PocketZenPhone
Regking 2003
As the only variable throughout the trials was Default_Version_WWE_106150.sa.CAB
This is the solution folks.
At least until someone says it does not work.
Installation Steps:
1. Download CAB that I have attached.
2. Copy over to device
3. Install
4. Soft Reset.
1st of all let me say this is a great site for the HTC devices, I found it years ago when i had the first XDA (Wallaby i think) and now i own a O2 Mini.
I have just installed your patch and i'll let you know how it goes.
I wonder if this patch does the same as the "downgrading" of the caller id as detailed in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=20428
The downgrade has been succesful for blue angel users too.

Many thanks for posting this information.
For a relative newbie like me who has never manually fiddled with ROM files, can you please explain what I actually have to do to "install" the CAB file, i.e. in which directory on the device do I put it, and how do I run it?
- Peter
Once copied over to the device just place it where you can find it using the file explorer. Once located using the file explore simply click on it and it will install on its own. Do a soft reset and enjoy.
Crisscross: The Photo Contact solution that people have found only alleviates the problem a little, not entirely.
In my trials it has solved my problems completly. I wish for other members who try it out to report back as well to see whether all my trials were just a fluke, or our solution.
don't work for me
don't work for me. same problem as before, can't connect due unknown reason.
thanks anyway.

The downgrade of caller-id to an earlier version has also solved the problem totally for me and several other people, both blue-angel and magician users. Thats why I was curious just what your patch did. Seems that it is something similar, you are maybe downgrading more of the rom?
Did you try downgrading of the caller-id first? Not just photo contacts but downgrade to the specified earlier build of caller-id?

Hi there,
Just thought I'd report that I've just installed it. My ExtROM now reports as 1.06.150 WWE.
And... so far, so good!!! I've connected/disconnected to GPRS multiple times, interrupted GPRS with a phone call and then reconnected, have sent files to my device via BT while GPRS is on, and still no problem. It's looking very good!!!
And I'd swear it connects faster than it did previously.
Anyway, I'll keep hammering at it over the weekend and report back on Monday.
Thanks again randomshots!
Well, I'm back already, because I still have the problem. DARN IT!!!!!! :x
The thing that made it happen was that I made a phone call while GPRS was on. When I ended the call and tried to reconnect to GPRS, I got the blasted error. So it seems that receiving a phone call does not cause the error to happen, but making a call does. At least for me.
Oh well, it was worth a try. Back to the drawing board.
Same problem in Hong Kong
I upgraded to ROM v1.11 a few days ago and since then I have the GPRS connection error after 1 or 2 connections. Soft reset will solve the problem. This problem was not encountered at all before the ROM upgrade. It must be the new ROM that mess things up!
As this "default cab" from an old rom seems to solve the problem and also an older version of caller-id solves it there is probably something wrong in the communication between caller-id and some of the customisations from this cab on newer roms. Btw the problem is also in 1.12 roms.
Nice too see that we have two possible solutions here, I will stick to the downgrade of caller-id as it has solved the problem totally for me but it would be interesting to know what the real cause is...
Hi again. Just to answer the previous question to my post: my rom version is 1.12.00 WWE, radio 1.12.00, extrom now says 1.06.150. i think the only thing this cab changes is this rom number, nothing else
orcas
orcas,
I believe you are absolutely right. When the extended rom has finished installing the programs, it runs this .cab file to 'brand' the Magician with the build number. Nothing more or nothing less. But faith can move mountains, as we all know...
I guess some of you know that there is another (older) thread about GPRS problems. If you do not, there is a link below.
Anyway, I finally tried the most recent suggested fix in that thread (downgrading the device's CallerID program to an earlier version) and like a number of others I can happily report that so far, it has fixed my GPRS cannot connect problem. Looking good.
Here is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=20428
- Peter
Just thought I'd share that the second fix I tried (downgrading CallerID) has continued to work for me. I have no more problems with GPRS. All is well with my Magician. At last.

"new connection setup database found..."

Hi Everyone,
Just started with the Touch HD.
But keep on getting the following message:
"new connection setup database found. Do you want to install it?"...
The subsequent installation always fails with connection errors, even on "Active Sync";
Which was indicated in an older thread - although that thread has no indication if anyone was ever successful.
Any advice is welcome.
Kind regards
M
I have exactly the same issue. My Rom is std.
yes you need to install it. This was an update pushed out about 5 or 6 months ago. I assume you are still using the Stock 1.1x ROM at a guess. Also if this is failing on active sync you will need to try over WiFi or use the Data Connection
If you have bought the device SIM free go to the HTC website and upgrade the ROM. If you have got this from a carrier then see if they have an updated ROM for it
Thank you David. After weeks of the "cannot connect...." message, while my phone was connected via active sync i went to the HTC web site and suddenly it connected and downloaded the update with no need to flash the ROM. Spooky!

Lo and behold, finally, while the dreaded message displayed on the HTC, I connected to the PC under Active Sync- waited for it to actually "sync"; brought HTC support site up on the PC (not sure if that did anything), pressed "yes" and it lodaded the DB and installed it. Phew!
I was "THAT CLOSE" to updating the ROM. No need now. I don't (yet?) seem to have run across any of the listed problems.
Thanks David

The main reason im wanting to use windows update is because i've tried to install a couple of apps and it tells me i need an upgraded .net framework, is there any other way to do this? and how can i find the latest version?
thanks if anyone can help.
dont waste your time...
in short ,dont waste your time with windows update,it is not used ,at all.
windows update (according to interviews on FACEBOOK..windows mobile, with relevant persons from MICROSOFT.....) is only for very crictical updates and they have never used it ,(as far as i know...?)
best is to navigate to htc website ....

..make sure to select your country ..top right of webpage ,
note, above link i provided... is for htc middle east and africa...and upgrades might not be applicable to your country...!!!!
the .net issue is seperate issue..has got nothing to do with upgrade..!!..
it is used for certain applications to function...
, google for ..something like ...."netcf 3.5 download "....or/
try this link and make sure it is what you are looking for.....!!!!!
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...49-3C6B-42F1-9FD9-0041345B3385&displaylang=en
follow link..it will take you to microsoft web page (dont worry, it is a free applications ) ,but be aware ,the application is about 33 megabytes, and download it to your pc.
afterwards , you have to connect phone to pc and install from pc.to phone..reboot phone and you application should work.?
( do not try and install from phone ,it wont work )
good luck

From what I can see you already currently have the latest ROM upgrade that is also available via HTC's website, so there is no need for you to download and install it again. At the time, the ROM was released to improve the overall functionality of the phone and fix some existing issues with it.
Here is what the ROM upgrade contained:
Improved Functions and Fixes
1. Updated the Connection Setup Database.
2. Improved emergency call connections while using Airplane Mode.
3. The GPS position updating speed has been enhanced.
4. A Title bar display flicker in TouchFLO 3D has been corrected.
5. Fixed multiple browsing issues.
Go to this link, and download and install the NETCFv35.Messages.EN.wm.cab to your device. After you installed NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab, reset your phone.
thanks alot guys, appretiated
Since installing this, im getting quite a few error reports

No internet when I use rebel sim card

Hi friends,
I recently bought a HTC HD2 locked to T Mobile in UK. I used a Rebel sim to unlock it and I am now using it on O2.
However I am not able to start internet, neither can I receive internet settings from O2.
The message that gets displayed tell the phone is pre set to T Mobile internet settings and these cannot be changed
Is there anyway I can bypass these? Anyone else faced same thing before?
Thanks
Metal
settings - menu - all settings - connections - there should be a connection setup option in there.
if not, use this
phoneroms.co.uk/Programs/connectionsetup.cab
instal it, reboot the phone, it will auto run when you restart and configure your phone.

thanks for reply.
Yes I went to that menu option but the only thing I see is TMobile.
I am asked to select country (i select as UK), then I am asked to select operator and only option I have is T - Mobile.
Besides when I click on any browser, I get the T Mobile flash screen and then the browser starts.
I get an error as I am not a T Mobile customer. I have a link for settings there. When I click that it says -
This connection is pre configured. It cannot be modified.
You need to flash the WWE HTC ROM, as the T-Mobile ROM has the internet settings preset and you cannot change them.
hollinshead...
Thanks for the reply. I was guessing so from the little bit of research I have done.
Can you please give me some pointers in that directions...not really handholding but some links or step by step guide ?
I am new to WinMo actually...have been a symbian loyalist till now !
Sorry for sounding lame, but what is WWE?
WWE = World Wide Edition
Thanks.
I tried to d/l it from the HTC site. When I enter the serial no. I get

That does indeed work and I am now able to use internet on O2 even though I am locked to T Mobile. However I cant receive network settings. With O2 you send active to 2020 and you receive the internet settings. I get a message back that there is a problem and contact customer services. That is not an issue now as I can use the internet.
However I am curious to know if I will be able to upgrade my ROM in the future. I downloaded the WWE ROM but I got 294 Error for invalid vendor when I tried to install
In simplistic terms what is HSPL? is that irreversible? Are there any links for tutorials which make it simple for WinMo beginners.
Sorry but its my first day on HD2 and on WinMobile

Yes I did, but for someone who started using a new phone out of the box just few hours back, its a bit over the head.
I am trying to come to grips on what is HSPL, SPL, flashing, etc.
So I wanted to know if there is any basic tutorial, help pages etc which can be useful for starters. I am a tech guy so I can understand the tech terms but everyone needs a guidance first time around.
