Car charger problems - Touch HD General

I use TomTom on my Touch HD with a car charger.
The first charger I used was fine but since I lost it I cannot find a charger that works properly... At first I thought I was just using faulty charger's but as I have now tried 3 different ones I am beggining to wonder if the problem is with my HD!
The funny thing is that on both the main screen and in TomTom it is showing the status as 'charging'... even the light on the top of the phone is lit to show it is charging but the battery level is still going down all the time!
The only thing I can think of is that maybe the chargers I am using now are not as powerful as the first one I used? Or are all car chargers standard?
Either that or my HD is broken!
Can anyone please help me find a solution?
Ps. The phone still charges fine through both a wall plug socket and a USB connected to a PC.

The car charger I use I bought for my old Tytn 2 (original HTC one), works great for the HD and Diamond, even when the battery was at about 20% left on the HD, TomTom 7 running, screen brightness max, the battery was almost fully charged within an 1hr.
Think it's rated at 1amp, you might want to check the power rating on yours, anything under 1amp and it's really going struggle to charge while using it.

Unfortunately its not printed on any of my chargers what amp they are... I actually thought they were all the same amp but if some are more powerful than others this could be my problem.
What does concern me however is that even when the HD is switched off it is still not charging (even though the light at the top of the phone shows it should be!)

There are plenty of tools around (HTC's battery.exe, acbpowermonitor, battlog, powerguard, etc...) that can show you charge/discharge current. If your car charger gives you less than the unit is consuming, battery will not be able to charge.

I had this problem and found it was because I was charging through the usb socket on the stereo which always worked on Polaris but not with Blackstone. If I charge from the cig lighter socket it works good.

link the charger to the main battery under the bonet and you will recieve a quicker phone charge, usually a full battery charge will take 24 hours, link it up to your main battery and a full charge will be done ina matter of minutes, its genius

God I hope he's joking too...

First I used my original HTCTyTn carcharger by trial. But he has not
enough power to charge and run TomTom at the same time!
So, i bought this new one (more powerfull) for the Touch HD.

This one works perfect for me!

I bought a cheap and cheerful universal usb charger from tesco's for a couple quid. Works great and no problems with power whilst running TomTom

Hi, first post here and rather than start a similar thread so soon, i thought it best to post here.
Is it possible for car chargers to over-charge the device? I bought a cheap and cheerful car charger off ebay but was a bit concerned some of them are listed as having overcharge protection and this one wasn't. Wouldn't normally be bothered but its a £550 handset!
Cheers!

Firstly, i am tired of you double posting all your question, second, there are lots of solutions, and i have no idea why it takes 4 hours for you to get full charge, it only takes less then 2 hours for me, and how often do you charge your device? if you are a power user, then when do you use your device most often? you see, when i am home or in the office or in the car, i always plug the Athena for charge, can you not do the same? most of us here don't wait for the battery to get fully drain then start charging.
There is no external battery charger right now, (unless you buy another Athena and use that for charging....haha). They will be an official Athena dock which support spare battery charging, GPS for Less site is also offering another Dock which has the same function. However they are both not out yet.
Meanwhile, if you really want to get more battery, you can always buy external charging device which provide battery to your Athena. So if you are in the tube or anytime not using your Athena, you can plug it into the external battery device and charge it all the time. This way you will last longer before your battery fully drain.
Hope this helps, and please don't double post again.

As I know only 2-3 first charges for Li-Ion batteries are critical, those called as "battery training". You should fully discarge and then fully charge 2-3 times for a new battery. After that it doesn't really matter if you charge battery that is not fully discharged. Li-Ion batteries doesn't have a memory effect. Yes, they have limmited number of charge cycles, usially 500-700. In normal use it is good for 1-1.5 years.
So don't worry, charging you battery in a car or at work will not kill it.
Also you can consider external USB batteries like this:
http://www.tangshop.com/universal-external-battery-powerbox.html
those batteries are very handy if you flying often.

Dimitriy

firstly, we haven't get you wrong, we understand you completely, and no, you will not hurt your battery by charging it all the time, beside, an extra battery does not cost that much as well.
Second, I have already told you clear, there are no external charger for Athena, and for the web link of HTC and GPS FOR LESS dock, please take your own time and google it, it will only take you 2 mins.
Actually, you could find your answer by searching on net, what's what we do here, and it's not our duty to spend this 2 mins to search for you while you can do it yourself, so don't be lazy and start searching!

Clearly, mate, calm down two notches and read through this forum. There are not that many topics about Athena, and most of the trivial things have been covered already.
Check out this link. I bought two to test then bought four more for cars laptops and my travel bag. If you use thier penquin AC/DC charger I get a full charge in under two hours.
http://pocketpctechs.com/main~unit~...2Dn%2Dcharge+cables~item~USB%2DLSPDUO001X.htm
I have also noticed that the battery indicator gets stuck sometimes. If I disconnect the charger then wiat a bit and shut the unit off then on it will register correctly.
The issue with charging off the laptop is that Activesync keeps the device on. When the device is on it switches to high speed mode then it takes MUCH longer to charge.

I'm glad I found this post. I noticed this with the device that the battery indicater stays orange (amber ..whatever). I have to continue to check it. After an hour or two...depending on when i started....it will stay amber. If I unplug it and navigate to the Power screen, it will jump to 100%.
Can I fix this? Second, does the advantage only register battery percentage in 10's? i.e. 10% 20% 30%
I did search the forum...but couldnt locate a relative answer to these.
Thanks in advance!

Need a car charger that keeps up

I've installed TomTom on my Tilt, but the GPS drains the battery faster than my car charger can charge it. Anyone have a recommendation for a better charger? I ended up using my laptop as a battery to keep the phone alive on a 12 hour trip last week.
What you need is a 1A battery rather than a .5A (which is probably why it can't keep up). Most sellers on ebay don't mention it so you'll have to take the initiatvive to ask them.
What you need is a good official HTC car charger. Cheap one won't charge or as you say won't charge fast enought. My HTC branded one will charge (not only maintain the battery level) my phone even with TomTom on.
Read my post here (and use the serach funtion also , many many many many many many many many (many many many many) similar questions have been asked...)
I bought a few car chargers on ebay and they broke. Since then, I've been using my USB cable with a USB charger adapter and it's been working GREAT!
I have plenty of USB cables sitting around the house so that worked perfectly for me. The USB adapter is only $2.00 shipped. I use Tomtom every day and the USB charger keeps up.

Thanks for the replies. I got mine at an AT&T store - it has a 1350mA battery. I ordered the USB adapter, we'll see if it works.

I don't know what the deal is but the only time I have a problem is when I am streaming media and my brightness is turned up. If you turn down the brightness all the way then I have no problem. I originally had a problem with the OEM battery not charging with some chargers but when I bought a sedio 1600mah battery all the chargers now work. Weird. All I know is that since I upgraded to the 1600 battery things have been better.

battery drain with car usb and gps

Hi
Using today the phone @ 100% brightness with car charger connected and using Sygic / Copilot, I see that my device can't not even charge at the same time that I am using it, but maintain their % of battery. Even with the charger the phone drains battery.
WTF samsung, So i cant make a long travel without running out of battery?
Anyone more with this problem?
PS: My HD2, HD, TyTN2, etc doesn't have this problem with the same car charger, they even charge at the same time.
What's the rating on your charger? I had to swap mine out for a 1A one in order to cope with GPS use in the car. Haven't had a problem since then.
I suspect the one you're using is 750mA or even potentially 500.
I have just had the same problem. I knew i needed a higher amp charger but i thought i would give it a try. The one i used is 650mA, so that's definitely not large enough. The normal 'house' charger is 0.7A (700mA) so in theory that size or above should charge whilst the S2 is being used.
I have a 1200 mA usb adapter for car (a sony ericsson, very very slim one) and I have no issues. You need a decent amount of power for that phone so 650mA will not do, have at least 1000.
http://www.nextag.com/Sony-Ericsson-AN400-Compact-853915153/specs-html
Not sure if this is the exact model but I found it to be the best because it's slim and there is nothing sticking out of the car socket, has a lot of power and I can power any usb device with it.

Yest but probably you hava a chinese charger. The rating on it is never near the real one.
oh, I see, crappy charger, ill change then thanks guys
TomTom recently released a high speed multi charger. I replaced my old car charger with this one as I had a similar slow charge problem. Never had a problem ever since. All my weapons are always fully loaded with enough power! Expensive though!
http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/product...-cables/high-speed-multi-charger-9UUC.001.04/
If someone is using a cheap higher-powered mains adaptor without issue, could you please post a (UK) link? Also if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative to the £20 car charger that would be great too!
I had same problem.I bought Samsung charger and no problem after

2.1 Amp TomTom charger is way too much for this device. Samsung wall charger is only rated at 750mA, but someone even found out that in source level Samsung has limited the power current at only 650mA.
With 1 Amp (1000mA) top quality car charger, the phone lost charge while using Navigation on full brightness.
Very slow charging in general for this phone.

I bought today a Belking car charger of 2.1amps and suprise!, same problem battery drain.

When you have the car charger plugged into the phone go into Settings/About phone/Status & look at "Battery status"; it should tell you if the phone thinks it's plugged into a USB port (in which case the phone will draw only 450 mA) or an AC charger (from which the phone will draw 650 mA). These limits are built into the Samsung ROM, presumably to keep the phone cool and/or extend the battery's lifespan. They could be overridden (especially the AC charger current limit) in a custom ROM.
Absent a custom ROM, if the Status display says you're connected to a USB port, you could try a different charger, or connecting USB pins 2 & 3 (the two center pins on the USB A connector) together. That's how the phone decides if it's connected to a USB port or AC charger -- the low-resistance (less than 200 ohm) connection between the two USB data pins is the key. The spec calls for 200 ohms resistance between the data pins, but some of the low-end high current chargers I've seen just have a direct short.
If that doesn't work, or if the Status display says you're charging off AC, then try some of the other battery-life tricks documented here in the forums; they should reduce the device's draw from the battery, allowing the charger to do its job.
Wow, this is kind of disappointing i have to say. I have noticed the USB charging is incredibly slow. You can't ever rely on it, i think it would take close to 5 hrs to fully charge from USB, that's insane! By mains it's somewhere between 2 and 3, but that's still way too high.
I take it if you buy a higher-powered mains adaptor (not one for the car) then we'd definitely get the benefits of a faster charge? Can someone post a link to one they are using and know works faster that the stock one?
Cheers
I ll try ur tricks guyz.

The first post got me worried for a while, but this info has put me back to ease. Pre-ordered the GS2 (India) and getting the original Samsung charger along as a freebie.
Yeah, i have simelar experience with the samsung s2 in my car.
Its eating the battery even when its plugged in and i think i have a good charger..
I found 1 solution.. I use now copilot, you can set different setting to disable the screen automatically when you drive a straigt forward for some kilometres, only when you need to turn it comes up again.
thats how i set it and it loads a little, but bad anyway.

Nexus 4 charging issue and wireless charging

So I've had my Nexus 4 for a couple months now and I've taken really good care of it. It's pretty mint. But today it refuses to charge and I have a phone interview for a job on Thursday and I really need this little guy to work. I have CM 10.1 and thought maybe it could be related to that in some way. Maybe it's just kinda glicthy right now? But the last time I was using the phone it died and I put it on the charger and an hour later it wouldn't turn on. I've tried 3 different chargers and none of them give me the little battery charging image or light up my LED notification light. Any troubleshooting ideas? If not, can anyone recommend a cheap wireless charger that works very well? Thanks for your help in advance, I really need to get my phone working immediately.

what other chargers do you have at your disposal? Ideally you should use one with a rating of minimum of 1 amp. The stock charger is rated at 1.2 amps. For your case, if the 1 amp charger doesn't work, try a 1.5 or 2 amp charger for 30 minutes or so. See if that works.
Did you drop your phone or hit it against something?

Are you using any custom kernel? Could you try charging it once with the phone completely switched off and check how long it takes? Are you using the original accessories coming with the phone? Is the charger directly connected to the wall or on an electric adaptor?

Nope any custom kernel or Unlocked bootloaderl, not even rooted as it's brand new device I got 2 days back...yes yesterday I completely drained device to 0% and then charged to 100% and above mentioned charge timing I noticed during charging...yes I'm using original accessories which came with phone....yes charger connected directly to wall... Thats why I'm concerned and posted here to help... Thanks
I don't have any complaint about Battery backup or not even screen issue in my one Plus 8 Pro..whole device working fine except this Charging Time....just concerned about Charging Time thats all
Could be the cable that came with the device that *might* be defective, I see nothing else. If you bought it from a local reseller, try to see with the shop maybe? If you bought it online, then you may want to buy a good quality USB-C cable, those made for charging the ultrabooks, for example. Wish you luck!

Could you have a soul sucking app or widget that is putting a little strain on the battery or is it pretty much fresh out of the box? I know I have a weather widget that is the Bain of my existence but I like the way it looks so I put up with an extra 25 minutes to charge the battery.

Yeah I use Overdrop Weather App and it's Widget... The issue here is maybe the power point where I plug my charger maybe that's underpowered....so I tried today on overpowered power point usually uses for Refrigerator or Washing Machine I plugged there my One Plus 8 Pro and magic happened my phone was on 45% and it went to fully 100% just in 45 minutes... So for now I figured out that issue was in power point not in My device. Hope it's true ?
