Problem with setting up an email account with a non-verified 'Security Certificate' - G1 General

I've searched the forum for a couple of hours without success so please forgive me if this question has been asked/answered....
My work email server uses a security certificate that has expired and they don't want to renew... I've setup my WM phones without issues (allows me to say continue anyway OR doesn't ask at all); however, the G1 fails to continue the email account setup and I receive the following error message;
"Setup could not finish. Cannot safely connect to server. (Not trusted server certificate)"...
Is there anyway to bypass this check so that I can complete the email account setup and poll for my work emails?

I had the same issue with an email provider that I use. I could never get it to work. But, I downloaded and used K9, and it worked.
Of course I had to do some searching to find out what incoming and outgoing settings other users of my email had used with other phones (Blackberry, WM, Palm, etc.). I played around with different settings and finally got it to working.
Then I just changed the notification settings and other settings to fit how I wanted it to sync and notify me and its working great now.
Try K9 and do some searching. Maybe try what settings have been used on phones in the past. You would be surprised at what actually works once its implemented the right way.
Hope this helps!

K9-it works
I use K9 to check my ako because that is the only program that lets me check it anyways, valid certificate or not.

Only 1 out of my 2 email accts retrieves new email messages?

Hello guys,
Currently I have an HP Ipag h6315 running Windows Mobile 2003. I have setup 2 emails account on my PDA ( Gmail & Bellsouth ).
I set both accounts to connect and retreive new messages every 2 minutes; however, only the account "checked" under ACCOUNTS will be the one that connects and retreive the email messages.
Shouldn't both accounts connect every 2 minutes and get new messages?
for example:
- If i go to inbox, it'll default to the inbox of whatever account i have checked under "accounts". if i check bellsouth, i'm able to see my messages from my bellsouth email address; however, after i close it and go back to the today screen, then only "Bellsouth" will connect and get new emails every 2 minutes.
- If i want Gmail to be the one to connect the every 2 minutes then i would have to go to inbox and check Gmail in order to gmail to be the one to connect every 2 minutes.
I dont know if that's the way its supposed to be, since i have set the option to connect every 2 minutes on both accts.
If anyone knows of this issue and happens to have a solution for it, i really appreciate it. Or perhaps is just a non-fixed bug.
thank you in advance,
Will V.
Unfortunately I think it's a bug in the Universal. I've been dealing with this problem since I got my Universal several months ago. Originally I thought it was a Windows Mobile 2005 problem, but I've had confirmation from several Wizard users (which is also WM2005) that their devices will check multiple accounts automatically.
For the time being I've gotten used to making sure my universal is always on my most important account and simply switching to my other account and manually checking it periodically. I'm hoping that this will be fixed in the next ROM upgrade.
Brett
Same problem for me in my Qtek 9000. Only the "active" account cheks mail automatically, no the others accounts. I´m asking for the solution in several forums but no possible. I think is a problem on WM5.
Actually it might be a problem with both WM3 (what i'm using) and WM5 (what you guys are using) kind of sucks to be having to switch in between accts in order get your new messages... if that's the case, that's a quality that the blackberrys will always outperformed the Windows mobile devices.
I'm sorry Will, I misread your first message. I believe it's a known issue in WM2003... it was supposed to be fixed in Wm2005, but there are still problems with the universal, at least.
Brett
I have the same issue.
Its a Pocket Outlook issue, as when I bought and switched to WebIS Mail, there wasnt an issue anymore. Works like a dream, no issues w/ it EVER and wil try to use wifi instead of gprs if you are on a wireless network, giving you a good speed burst w/ the universal...
Still on Pocket Outlook...is it possible to have a 'replay to' address specified for an e-mail account?
I can see that webIS Mail has the opiton but couldn't find it on Outlook.
thanks,

Receiving text messages related to ALL of my email accounts

Hello,
My MDA is set up to grab my exchange email, etc over the air through activesync. When I set up the account on the MDA, the setup wizard told me that I could set the account to grab new messages as they arrive. That of course sounds great so I chose that option.
Anyway, occasionally (not always) when I receive a new message on the exchange account, I get a text message silmultaneously with the same from address and subject as the new exchange email that arrived. I assume that "directpush" works by sending out these texts to trigger an activesync. However, as I mentioned, i don't ALWAYS get these texts. Also, it appears that I occasionally get texts a day after the message arrives in my inbox and even after I know I've read and deleted the message from my MDA.
Regardless of the sporadic nature of the texts, shouldn't the MDA keep them hidden from me? It's a little frustrating having to go thru and delete all these erroneous messages.
Any suggestions as to how I can clean this mess up?
First you need to provide more information.
What Rom are you using?
Only AKU 2.x Roms support Direct Push and then you need to have the correct version of Exchange Server (I think 2k5 sp2).
Direct Push does not use SMS but rather a heartbeat via GPRS.
I believe the old version of AS with Exchange Server used SMS (1.x Roms).
Thanks for the response.
I'm using xelencin's rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=53300
I have "direct push" turned on via the comm mgr. My office uses exchange 2k3, not sure what service pack. I don't believe there is such a thing as 2k5.
I might have typed the version number wrong, haven't been an exchange guy for many years. I would suggest talking to the guys responsibly for it and see if they support "MSFP".

The thing is, it works. I get mesages delivered to my phone nearly instantly. However, my SMS box is full of useless crap and this dilutes the usefullness of SMS in general.
That would lead me to believe that the exchange server doesn't support the true Push and since the Rom does it isn't disposing of the SMS as that is the old method.

Ok, that makes sense. I'll get a hold of the exchange admin weds and see if he can do anything for me.
It's Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2...
Are you receiving these texts if you eliminate the exchange server relationship?
(domain can be case-sensitive)
This is most odd. Another strange thing is that you mentioned that you got the option to get new messages as they arrive. That would happen pre AKU2 and SP2. I'd really suspect that your IT guys haven't really gone from SP1 to SP2 as you should not get that option during the AS configuration.
Also, I know that a big concern was that originally MS was thinking of using SMS which was a major pia as we have to purchase that "add-in" from Cingular and get charged for any SMS over our limit. In other words, you might want to see if you're getting charged by T-Mobile....

Interesting. I removed the relationship from activesync (activesync basically now asks me to set up sync with a pc or exchange server), but I'm still getting the texts. Sometimes, I'm getting duplicate texts. They're all coming from "701" if that helps.
HALP!

Is there anyway for me to check the version of exchange as a user?
Ya, the SMS thing is a concern for me. I had to sign up for a text plan on tmobile so that I don't end up oweing a fortune at the end of the month!
That's a good question, determining Exchange SP level remotely. I just tried my OWA but it tells me nothing. I'll keep looking.
Steven
Also, I just re set up my exchange OTA active sync. I get a "pop up" saying that I can synch as items arrive. When I go into "schedule", there's a link there to set that up which then asks for "Text messaging address for this device". Previously, I put in [email protected] which seems to work, but maybe I need to enter it differently some how?

I have an idea.
It appears that even the new versions of exchange have the feature "AUTD" which does the SMS message triggered update. I set up the exchange account for "auto update" 2 times now, but haven't set it up a 3rd. Is it possible that when the user configures the auto update feature, it triggers the AUTD sms messaging bit on the server? Since I've done it twice, I'm now getting two sms messages per incoming email. However, previously, when i had pocket outlook configured to handle the auto-update bit, it was concealing one of the two identical SMS's, but not the other.
I'm sure I explained this horribly, but it was worth a shot.
Not sure why I didn't notice this earlier...
I'm getting texts related to ALL of my email accounts configured on the device. This includes the exchange account mentioned earlier, but also two GMAIL accounts. For what it's worth, I set these two gmail accounts up through the tmobile set up wizard and later deleted the accounts from the device in an attempt to test things out. When the accounts were setup, they seemed to be grabbing the mail through a tmobile proxy or something instead of directly from the gmail servers.
No idea why I'm getting these messages, but this is getting crazy!
Stranger and stranger! I think that I would contact T-Mobile asap and cancel that SMS. I personally have never had any need for Texting, etc but people have different needs.
What I would start out with is to hard reset the phone after syncing it. Then I'd delete the partnership with AS. I'd setup my Exchange by installing your Exchange server's Security Certificate on your device(which you should keep on your SD card), configuring the AS on the device, never connecting to the PC. Wait a while to setup your GMail accounts, etc. ... one step at a time.
Good luck!

RESOLVED!
Ok, I think I figured it out.
T-mobile apparently uses these text messages to trigger email synchs.
I logged into my tmobile account and decided to pay attention to the "t-zones" section for the first time. "Setup My E-Mail" takes you to a page that allows you to configure email accounts for your device. It also allows you to check your email for those accounts. Anyway, there's an "Alerts" section that you can configure and it appears to relate to these texts that I've been receiving. Even my exchange account was configured here and was setup to send the text messages.
Additionally, it appears that I wasn't being charged for the texts. None of them have shown up in my online bill.
I believe that ALL of this was the result of using the tmobile email setup wizard that's included on the phone xelencin's cooked rom.
Whew, I feel like I've solved a puzzle.
Good for you! Makes sense now...
I've never run that email wizard myself, always manually create the accounts.

[Push Mail] How to configure Gmail account ?

I was wondering if its possible to get pushmail for gmail without using outlook ?
Is this possible ? Am I supposed to use IMAP or POP mail ?
Please help, thanks
If you setup mail, it will automatically setup for IMAP.
You configure for how often it checks the server.
Thanks I just did that, but the problem is it checks every 5 minutes, thats not exactly push mail is it ?? It should have the option "As mail arrives"
I tried deleting an email from my inbox, but when I check online, its still there (the actual gmail inbox) .. it seems they are not really in function are they ?
EDIT : Okay The messages got deleted in the browser inbox after 5 minutes ... So the email syncs every 5 minutes
How can I make it an instant connection (pushmail) ??
Actually Outlook Mobile 2007/2010 still pulls from IMAP instead of receiving pushes (Microsoft doesn't exactly know about IDLE). You'll want to set up an Exchange connection. See here for more details about Google Sync.
You'll want to configure the server manually. You can find ActiveSync somewhere into your Start menu, otherwise just go to the Sense settings tab, Data Service and ActiveSync to configure the server, then follow the instructions from the link above.
Thank you very much, that worked, and I can choose "As item arrives" now
One last thing, is it possible to change the email name from Outlook to something else ? e.g. Gmail ?
ZaZu90, what domain did you choose while configuring the connection? I can't click next unless I choose a domain, since the activesync software is different and probably newer than the one used in the google instructions...
I followed Yunabeco's link, the domain was left blank.
You have to initiate the email settings from active sync, not from adding a new account.
Check the intsturctions ^^
Yes I am trying to do the same but as I said I cannot leave the domain blank, i HAVE to fill in something in order to continue configuring the connection...
And apparently I am not the only one with this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5382949&postcount=4
Hmm this is strange, does it have to do with the location of purchase ?
Im not sure :S
I don't think it has to do with the location of purchase. Thanks for your help though. I am using dutty's holy grail 0.3a rom (wm6.5 build 21889, Base 2.01). What are you using?
Chaps,
have you had a look at this ....http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138636
Might help you.

Yea, that's the same document as earlier in this thread, but the problem is that the instructions don't work on some devices.. see the previous page
I just did the Push Mail setup (used the link from Yunabeco post)
I had no problem with the instructions, but for some reason it will only get the mail when I do an ActiveSync.
The ActiverSync chedule is set to sync during Peak times (As Items arrive) and off-peak times (As Items arrive).
The Use above settings and Send/Receive when I click Send) are als set to on.
Did I miss a setting as it's not working for me the way it should, or do I need to set something in my Gmail account also?

Barty,
Surprised at this. I set this up the other day on my device in order to talk someone through it and it worked. Deleted it as I don't need push mail right now.
Wondered if those who can't get it working can put down the steps they have taken to setup on their devices and we can see how we can help?
WB
I wonder if its possible to set up multiple push mail accounts ?
Gonna search for that now, if anyone got a link before I finish my little research, please add it !

Tattoo and Microsoft Exchange Server

All,
I'm sure, that this question is easy to answer for most of you:
Does the Tattoo supports an Exchange account? I have read that it is not supported (only over third party apps)
Please help me out on that!
Thanks a lot in advance,
Asterix
A friend told me that it does support MS Exchange.
He is using it.
But he sad that he just can't download attachments so he has to send those emails to his gmail account and then to download them.
The Mail app allows you to add an MS Exchance account. But it has NEVER worked for my email account. It might work for yours... who knows... But the Tattoo does support Exchange server.
It does work, but there is an issue.
I have access to my work email (via Exchange Server and the Mail app) and it was very easy to set-up. It works really well, the app is quite nice. It will do things like listing your emails by conversation.
However, I can only read emails. I can't send emails.
This is a bug in Android. Not sure whether it is being fixed in 2.1. I do think you can get it to work though if you have help from your IT team. I have read that they can change some of the security permissions on the Exchange server (ie exclude you from certain protocols). I haven't tried it though.

works great
Hi Guys, I was having the same problem with not being able to send mails and download attachments, even the mails which were longer, wouldn't load fully.
I requested the company's IT team to take a look at it and they changed some settings as Admins on the exchange server to get it working (I believe Android does not provide remote-wipe/ pin-password lock feature to be enforced, they had to bypass the check for me)
Hope it helps.
I had the problem of emails not sending when I set my son's Tattoo up.
I then accessed remote.xxx.com (where xxx is my domain name) and got an error, I tried again and it said the certificate was invalid, once I accepted it it let me in. I tried to access the Internal web site and got the cert error again. I accepted the cert again and just got a blank page.
I exited and have since been able to send emails without a problem.
I believe it's a certificate problem but mine has somehow resolved itself.

Interesting.
Sadly, tried it and didn't seem to work for me. It just kept defaulting to our corporate webmail server. I had heard it was a certificate problem too, but also the remote wipe etc needed in the security settings on the server.
Great that you've got it working though.

no problem
Hi!
Thanks for all the answers. I got my Tattoo now, setting up the exchange account was no problem at all, everything working fine. Some parts are a little bit not as fine as I'm used from my WM phones in the past. (times to set up when it should get the mails, which folder should get synchronized,..)
Thanks,
Stefan
I spoke to soon.
My son's phone keeps on saying it can't send - so I received 10 copies of the same email until I deleted it from the outbox.
There is a definite problem - has anyone found a solution?

Problems setting up my Hotmail account.

I recently updated my ROM from o2 stock 1.43 to stock 1.72. Since then I've been unable to set-up my Hotmail account. This has been doing my head in for a few days now, I've searched the forum but can't find anything that's relevant.
Here's my problem step by step: I select Add mail account then other, as Hotmail isn't listed. I then enter my e-mail address & password and click next. What happens next has never happened before when I've tried to set my hotmail account up from within a phone and has left me bewildered??
My Opera 10 browser now launches and takes me to the online Hotmail website??? WTF!!! After exiting the opera browser, I return back to the add mail account screen and I'm promptly back at square one?
Any help/ advice would be much appreciated.
Thx.
can you not input the settings for smtp, imap, pop3 etc manually???? im not sure which hotmail uses hence why i mentioned them all.
There is a few threads about hotmail mate
I wouldn't bother setting it though Sense...
Open Windows live and do it from there......
If you must then you will need mail.live.com. that is they worked for me the last time I set it though Sense...
I do have one question for HTC... Why the F**k are you selling a windows device that doesn't have the hotmail setting in Sense???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Oh you may want to update your version of Windows Live from the Marketplace

I'm not even given the opportunity to enter any settings manually as soon as I've entered my address and password and either clicked manual setup or the next button, my opera browser launches and takes me to the web based hotmail.
I totally agree with you that the Hotmail setting should be on the phone.

But I've setup my Hotmail account previously on this phone (HD2) via the Add Mail Account screen and never had any problems up until now.
Thanks for the suggestion tho', I may need to try that.
Can anyone help with this please? It's seriously doing my head in!
Me too, but I've fixed it
Hi,
I had the same problem when updating OS, what previously was a simple task became impossible, and as for taking me to the website, WTF barely covers it!
The answer is in the post from Neville.Holland, simply re-install 'Windows Live' from Marketplace and obey all the instructions, once the 'old WL' is removed and the phone restarts you'll find 'hotmail' is there in your list of email accounts as it was before...
Hooray
when inputing the email address at the start, just misspell it (notmail.con for instance) which prevents the wizard recognizing it. fill in all the rest of the details manually, then save it, then edit it and correct the address.
That's a weird problem, but sam's suggestion should definitely work. If not give provisioning a try. Just look around XDA and you'll figure it out.

Manual Hotmail Email Setup
samsamuel is right on! Hope I'm not raising the dead post here, just thought I can up some details for reference on manually setting up a hotmail email account as lots of light roms are without the windows live package (it's not quite a small install and it needs to reside on the device) and I've read through and met some probs on my own when installing the cabs...
So as samsamuel said, just mistype the "@hotmail.com" part when you set up your hotmail account manually in Messages. You'll skip the windows live wizard (which I don't even have installed anymore). Here are the settings that worked for me (diamond on wm 6.5):
Incoming mail server: pop3.live.com:995
Account type: pop3
Outgoing (smtp) mail server: smtp.live.com:25
CHECKED "outgoing server requires authentication"
CHECKED "use the same user name and password for sending e-mail"
Under "advance server settings": CHECK BOTH "require SSL for Incoming AND Outgoing email"
After all that, right before it starts to sync, just stop send/receive and go back to the account setting and fix the mistyped "@hotmail.com" earlier.
That's what worked for me; incoming and outgoing tested. And I'm not sure about this, but for people who want to sync more than the 50 email limit (when you setup via windows live), you might be able to do it by setting the period of download to "from the past 30 days" or I guess "all messages". I don't have that many emails as I don't use hotmail that much so you better try it out if you're interested (it might take some time to sync though if you have lots of emails... so 3g or wifi it).
thanks for the help, samsamuel!
