how does it work? - XPERIA X1 General

i turn on the front camera, in landscape mode, i look at my self and i see my self correctly. i rotate the phone 90 degrees (portrait mode, upright), and i still see my self correctly. i rotate the phone 180 degrees from where i started and i still see myself correctly. i turn again 270 degrees from where i started and i still see my self correctly.
you would think that when i rotate my phone, i would see my self sideways? can someone explain this?
i dont have video call so i dont know how the other person would see me when i turn the phone from landscape mode to portrait.

LOL
Yeah, you should definitely send your phone to a service centre! It's malfunctioning, they should replace it under warranty.
Really now... I hope you're kidding. Right?

no im not kidding. im just a bit puzzle. i have another phone with a camera, and when i turn the phone, the image doesnt rotate and so i will see my self side ways.
i know its sounds weird and im just trying to figure out whats going on or if my logic is wrong. im sure its my logic but im trying to find the explanation.

the phone is turning. your not.

yeah i know that. im still trying to reason it on my own. as i mentioned, my other phone, when i point the camera at myself and rotate the phone, ill see my self sideways.

o lol wow
thats trippy i have no clue how that happens unless you take a picture

are you serious or just mocking me.

prehaps that phone had acceloremeter?
but no matter what, as long as you're still in camera mode(assuming you're still using front camera), and not viewing a picture, to which angle you turn your phone to, you'll still see yourself upright!
now now, but if you were to take a photo at which ever angle you specified at, and were to view it in landscape mode(90 degree normal view) you would see the picture NOT upright. it would appear at whatever degree you held your camera/phone at just now.

yeah i know it doesnt have an accelerometer. my reasoning is screwed but im just trying to see where i am going wrong.
i do know if that i do take a picture, it will be upside down or what ever way i had the camera. i just cant grasp my reasoning at the moment.

OMG,
can you PLEASE take a video of yourself starring into your phone and wondering why on the display you are not hanging from the ceiling

......................

There actually is a reason.
Xperia uses MIRRORED image when using front camera. Front camera acts like mirror .. you rise your right hand .. and the person on the picture will rise his left hand .. which is now on the right side.
But that is not how normally cameras work. Normally you would see your correct, not mirrored picture. If you rise your right hand, the person on the picture will too raise his right hand .. which is on the left side.
Also when you turn both normal camera & display 45 degrees .. the picture will turn 90 degrees compared to the subject. This can be really distracting and confusing when holding the device with both camera and display in your hands. And that is, I believe, the reason why Xperia (and some other similar device, I don't doubt) uses mirrored image. With that the angles does not add, but subtract .. and it acts just like a mirror.
If you have notebook with front camera, I suggest you experiment with it. Most probably the mirrored picture will not be the default, but there will be option to try it too.
If you still don't get it, take some written text, put it in front of you .. and use Xperia with front camera to read the text on the screen .. the use the second phone.

This thread is hilarious .

it not hilarious yet but it is starting to be.

lol highly amusing thread..
when you take a pic the aspect doesnt change, just where you are in it.
when the x1 is held portrait you fill the aspect, when held in landscape you dont.
this isnt a trick of the x1 its just elementary physics
think about when you take the photo in portrait it fills the screen, in landscape it still fills the screen but you appear to take up less of the space
what happens when you take a pic with keyboard open ?
im tempted to try now but dont want a punch in the ear frok the girl sitting behind me on the bus.. although i would have no objections to having a pic of her on my screen

Post of the year!

LOL this post made me laugh, great stuff.
But really, you look in a mirror and rotate it, why doesnt everythig in the mirror rotate with it?
baffled :/

Priceless.

Well the post still has it's value. Since some phones do not mirror the picture and yes, the picture really rotate (unlike mirror, unlike xperia).
Actually I have seen this for the first time, but then my experience with devices like this is minor.

I have the solution - send your phone to me to sell on ebay

Flash LED missing from camera mode?

I almost never use the camera mode on my Trion, but last night I wanted to take some shots at a party. When I tried to turn on the flash the icon was gone from the screen. I tried the function list it has flash on/off but when I hit "on" nothing happens. Like I said I almost never use the camera, but I know it use to work. The only thing I did recently was add Hermes Tweek from fit4cat. I have tried soft reset, but I realy don't want to hard reset just for a stupid flash. I'm not the most tech savey guy, so I live in fear of bricking my phone every time I rom update. I like the way its set up now, so if it has no flash so be it.... But the pictures I could have had of last night.....Well, photo ops like that don't happen every day!!!

You probably know this but in case not - as you don't use camera often, the flah icon will vanish if the camera has slipped off straight picture mode into the mode where it takes a series of pictures. i.e if you look top left corner you should see a logo of a camera not three symbols of pictures lying on top of one another. I find mine constantly slips off straightforward picture mode because the jog wheel gets moved without noticing. The jog wheel cycles through all the different camera and video modes.

Nope its in single shot normal camera mode, but thanks for the tip on the scroll weel I did not know that. I think one reason I don't use the camera more is I hate using the styles when I'm taking a picture, so if you have anymore hardware button tricks you want to share.

Don't need stylus for camera. Start camera with button on side of case.
Take pictures with the Dpad button ie one in centre between the two phone buttons.
Accept the piture by pressing it again and your ready for the next picture.
Exit camera by pressing OK hard key button.

You are ok how ur now mate.....the flash is useless if not u want to use it for torch....even pictures taken from 5-6 feet away dont get any diffrence with flash on and off at night....though 1-2 feet picture will give you a lot of change...all white washed brighten up dude!!!!! i did took atlist 200+ picture with my tytn but i cant remember a picture which were benifited from the using of flash....
anyone any comment??
Night photos
Yup, Sajib, you're right - day photos pretty good, night photos rubbish. Flash 80% useless except for certain angles when taking night photos in macro. I have nothing I would need to photograph in macro in the dark but there maybe many who have!?
Mike
Well I guess I will just have to find my keys with the light of the screen, as that seems to be the only thing it good for. Thanks for the tips. Who knows mabey the flash will come back when I get up the guts to flash the Cingular rom.

Fix for front camera(Reverse image)

Idk if this was ever talked about but I want to know.... Has anyone ever thought about a way to fix the front facing camera image? you know, it shows everything backwards or reversed?
mine's working fine never noticed anything flipped
I never noticed it until someone mentioned it here. So I checked it, and sure enough, everything is reversed.
Just like a webcam. Shows YOU as others would see you. The right side of your face would be on the left side if you were facing yourself.
But if you take a pic, it should not be backwards.
And why wouldn't it be? it's taking a snap of what you see on the screen.
Remember, the front was designed as a video chat device, hence the "reversed" image, not for taking snapshots of you and other things.
You have a better camera for that which behaves as it should.
Front cam functions as designed.

That makes no sense.
EDIT: read up on it.
Compusmurf is clueless. The front camera in reverse is for easy centering of your own face - it behaves like a mirror.

That's where you're wrong... what you see from the front camera is a MIRROR image. NOT what others would see if they are looking at you. And for the record, most webcam applications allow you to switch between mirror image or "normal".
So in other words, there's no fix currently
as others would see you? easier for centering?
What you meant was, as other people would see you if they were looking at you in their rear view mirror, or in another mirror, not how they would normally see you. Im wondering if you guys have ever used a web cam. Ive been using them since they hit the market long ago and ive never seen a mirrored image of someone unless they flipped it with their cam software. And having the image reversed doesn't make it any easier to center yourself either lol. Good try guys. Its a setting in the camera config once you switch to the front facing camera on the thunderbolt.

Bad camera quality?

My OP is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10296162#post10296162
"I don't take pictures often, but my Samsung Omnia 7 seems to take very very bad pictures.
This is both indoors and outdoors, both with flash on and off.
Most picutres I take, it looks like they are out of focus, or if I'm shaking, which I'm not.
(edit: at the bottom of the post you can scroll to the right to see the rest of the pics)
Sometimes the pictures are ok, let's start with one which isn't too bad:"
See the link for the pics.
Other ppl have the same problem?
My pictures come out quite well with the Omnia 7..Not amazing (in comparison with high end digital cameras) - but very good for a smart phone.
Reading that topic - did you at all try the half press autofocus? You MUST do this with every shot if you want precise, blur-free pictures else I'm afraid you are going to come out with the pictures you've presented.
However if the pictures occur at the same quality whilst autofocusing - then there is a definite defect in the camera and would get the phone replaced under warranty (if valid) or attempt to clean the camera lens.
No, didn't half press on any of them Didn't knew I had to to focus..
hehe ... another question ... is it possible to save the camera settings? When I record videos i always have to switch vom vga to 720p hd recording again ... all changed settings are on stock again when i restart the camera app
Sadly, you won't be able to save any camera settings.
This is very annoying - Always having to set up the camera again prevents me from taking snapshots spontaneously.

I never need to change any of the settings - they're fine for quick snapshots. When you need to play around with contrast, white balance, marcro, etc, it's no longer a quick snapshot!
As has been discussed in this thread, it's 100% evident that your pictures are poor because you haven't half pressed the shutter button to focus first.
Just hold the button lightly until a rectangle box appears. That's your focus box and it should be evident when it's focused on what you want. You'll also hear a sound from the device that it's focused.
Without releasing your finger, push down fully on the shutter button to take the focused photo.
If you simply push down like you have been, it's not giving the camera a chance to focus and you'll get blurring.
I'm sure you understand already by the post I saw, just making sure I can double make sure you understand.
Happy shooting!

There's an Anti Shake feature on the Omnia (I say Omnia because it wasn't there on the HD7) I'd like to enable permanently but it always goes back to off when you restart the app.
(Just a suggestion as to why someone would want to change the settings)
My problem is not exactly bad quality, but has anyone else notice that there is a red/pink area in the middle, when you take a pic from a white/light color?

Yes, I get that pink area too. I believe it's a fairly common issue with phone cameras, and I also had it with my previous phone (HTC HD2).

[Q] running apps in case turns them upside down

Hi all I just got a case crown case and the screen flips to face me when I prop it up on about a 45 degree angle via the case (landscape mode) but when I start an app such as angry birds the screen rotates to the inverse position (landscape facing away from me) is there any way to prevent the tablet from doing this? Thanks

Screen lock button on the top of the tab next to volume rocker?
WOWEEEE.. YOU ARE Correct.. some games and apps will only work in the defalt landscape mode... I just tested angry birds.. However some games will require you to hold your tablet more upright then ease it down to that position.. By the way that is quite less the 45 deg. more like 22
i think the android Market is the same way .. The lock screen works only on some apps.. The app has to be rotation sensor aware.. Angry birds is NOT . well on my tablet anyway
Hope this is helpfull ...
I have screen lock on and I tried moving it around trying to get it to flip back to how my case it setup but itll only play in normal landscape. :/
Do you maybe have the tablet in the case upside down?
Because most launchers will rotate any way but some apps won't.

I vote for this on cause I tried to replicate what the original poster stated and it won't go show upside down unless I have it in the case wrong way.
Ok guys..
dont take this personal but you ARE NOT READING HIS POST CORRECTLY..
he wants to use the tablet upside down.. When you put the tablet in the case then turn it upside down while flipping the cover back.. The tablet stand will hold the case.. at well about 20 to 30 deg.. Thou he states 45 deg a bit off..
when the tablet is in this position the launcher will turn properly.. But when some games and apps are launched .. they are not aware of that rotation sensor.. to test this turn your tablet upside down and Launch say Angry Birds..
this app will only work with the tablet right side up... I noticed this many months ago.. as i sometimes prop my tab on my stearing wheel in my mini van.. upside down... NOT ALL APPS WILL WORK . JUST as not all apps will work in Landscape and portrate mode ..
OP BEST Solution email the developer. and ask if there is any fix or a hack...

None taken but this case has a built in stand. That positions it the right way doesn't seem to make sense to use it upside down on with the built in stand. I think something else that we both may not be getting

Ok I read my post im sorry it sounded a bit overly aggressive..
What im saying is sometimes i turn the lid backwards and tuck in the stand .. then will lay it on a desk or often on my knees while in bed where the tablet is upside down .. the stand works both ways , i think this is what he is doing.. as the 45 deg thing.. Try it with your tablet and you will see what im talking about.. anyway .. The op fled the scene it seems so the point is mute... I would like to know if this is what he is doing or not...
Again sorry did not mean to sound like a Bixxh ...
i JUST Got home from PT( PAINFUL TORTURE ) For my hand and shoulder I so wanna go back to work . then i would not be on here all the time..

i can see where he gets this from take the acer case(have it right here) and on the box it will show the two positions the tablet can be used, one way will turn the tablet up side down in the case and 20-45 ish angle and if u were wanting to play games that angle is better so when u hit the screen it doesnt fall back
Thanks Brian.. OP Are you here...

Some apps will adjust themselves in this situation.. But the app or game as i stated above.. Have to be aware of the rotation sensor.. MANY Games are not . you would have thought turning tablet to that position. Then lock the rotation lock.. But the app is aware of what is top and bottom of the tablet.. Not what is top or bottom of the UI..
hi all just wanted to say i do have the tablet in the case the way the case maker intended. If i put it in the other way all the cutouts for my ports are blocked.
As said, your apps have to actually be aware they should be running in upside down landscape mode... which most (particularly games) are not. There's no way to fix it yourself (unless the app source is available and you're a dev, that is). So this has nothing at all to do with your case...
Has nothing to do with the case, as technically you are trying to use the tablet upside down. I too very much like that position and had the same problem.

Orientation lock in the android market is what you want. Costs $1.50 but lets you lock it in "Reverse Landscape" which is what you are looking to do.

Problem: Video slowly moves to the right in 360ºV or cardboard apps.

Hi. I recently acquired some cardboard like glasses (blitzwolf) and wanted to give them a try. I really liked the experience, considering they're much cheaper than Oculus, and there's a nice offer of videos and apps already.
But after a few minutes I realized about a problem. You can move the video to the left or right just rotating your head. Mine moves slightly to the right or the left, depending on my phone's position (horizontal with the speakers on the left and home button on the right, or vice versa.) I guess the solution is to configure my phone's sensors, but I don't know how.
I recorded a of it, to make things clearer. I'm not moving my phone, so the entrance to the cave should always be up front, but you can see it rotates to the right.
I know this is my phone's problem, and not the device, but I consider this section to be the most appropriate to post it.

I'm also having this problem in all VR apps, you can try GPS Status & Toolbox from PlayStore to calibrate your sensors, it works for many people.
For me it seems, nothing works. All my sensors are working properly, i tested them and have no erratic readings whatsoever, compass works well too, but in Cardboard... major sensor drift. The only thing i can do for now is watching 3D movies in VR Theater with the screen locked in center.
That's a classic VR problem for mobile devices. You could try an xposed module named, 'Gyroscope Noise Filter'. On my device there wasn't much drift, so couldn't notice any large differences, but you can give it a shot.
When it occurs, I try to stabilize my phone on a table for 10 secs and it stops, also it happened when I mess with dpi... My sensors should be good though, it have better range that a friend's phone. I guees it's a more serious issue for you.
Hey, Folks!
I had the same problem with every vr app on my G2 and I solved it!
The problem is the damn button "bulge" (0,2mm) on the backside. The phone never ever laid flat so theres was no way to calibrate the gyro correctly.
So I placed it on a 0,5 mm creditcard so the button doesn't touch the ground and calibrated the damn thing. BINGO! No movment.
I think this is adaptable to every phone. Think of the "flatness" of your phones backside. If theres a button or camera bulging out, the picture will move (probably) to the right.
Please excuse my bad english.
On an s5, dial *#0*#, then tap sensors, then gyroscope self test. Cured it for me.

ve solved the problem. You're using an VR application like a video, for example, what you're running and hitting the phone in the other hand or something soft on all corners. As you rotate it constantly.

This also worked for my Samsung S7 stock. Looks like the "test" is actually a calibration/reset, not just a test.
