Capdase + Seidio = $$ = Ultimate Case?? - Touch Pro, Fuze Accessories

Like the look & feel of a "simple" black leather case, but do NOT like the idea of covering the keyboard with a sheath of plastic (poor feel & seems bound to age poorly) - and so ended up with a Capdase BiFold Leather Case for my Fuze.
Posted pictures & problems with this case earlier, including some Surgery we performed to alleviate Case/Screen interaction. But while the surgery did Help, it did NOT eliminate the problem.
ALSO got concerned about reports of the top LAMINATE lifting off from the lower (button) area of TouchPros. As my screen protector has fallen prey to a similar lifting, having the laminate come up seems at least Possible.
Decided that what was needed was a cover for the TOP of the Fuze - one that would add as little bulk as possible, while both protecting the edges of the unit and providing a bit of separation between the screen and the top flap of the Capdase case (which would sometimes (RE)DIAL the phone at the end of a call! Nice trick if you could control it... )
Ended up buying a Seidio Innocase, which others have reviewed: it does indeed "fit like a glove" - wonderful precision, a nice feel, & leaves plenty of room around the actual Touch portion of the screen. (Carried the Fuze for several days in just the Seidio, but did not like the Exposed Screen.)
The combo of the Capdase BiFold Leather + the TOP HALF of the Innnocase seems to work perfectly: the edges are protected, the screen is protected, the Capdase fits nice & tight against the Seidio (which also provides a bit more protection for the top corners of the Fuze), and there has been no more Accidental Dialing (or Disconnects!).
Combination is obviously Not Cheap (think total came to around $55, incl Shipping Costs), but it IS flexible: can always remove Fuze from the Capdase & snap the Innocase back cover on if a SLIM profile is required.
The Combination fits nicely into an inner jacket / coat pocket (where a tri-fold wallet might fit), and also does well in the top pocket of an Over Shirt (Safari, jean, or wool - as long as pocket has a Closure of some kind!)
A few pictures are attached (hopefully...)

Can never pay too much for protection on our phones. Looking good!

might as well put the phone back in the box it came with and seal it tight so it'll never be scratched. jk

might as well put the phone back in the box it came with and seal it tight so it'll never be scratched
Indeed, the "naked" approach has some arguments in its favor - particularly if ALL you are carrying is just "a phone."
A Phone is relatively inexpensive & readily replaceable: My Razr never saw the inside of a case - but it certainly looked Well Used by the time it was replaced with the Fuze. (At only 16 months or so of usage.)
My Axim (PDA) has never been WITHOUT a case: it has served for over three times as long as the Razr did (and is now approaching 5 years in service), and only in past 6-months or so has it exhibited any outward signs of wear ("chrome" plating on D-pad & "DELL" logo are wearing off). OTOH, have been through numerous screen protectors, and the Daily Carry case (a RhinoSkin) looks like it has been through a war zone: in essence, the screen protectors and the case have 'sacrificed' themselves for the safety of the Axim - and the invaluable data stored within.
My Fuze is PDA FIRST, and Phone second. Like the Axim, I hope to keep the Fuze running for at least 4 years (hopefully longer!), and do not look upon it as Readily Disposable - like A Phone would be. Therefore a good case seems a very worthwhile investment, albeit one that is made more difficult by a) the dual purpose nature of the Fuze (it may be Phone Second, but it DOES still function as a phone), and b) the Sliding Keyboard.
For those who view the Fuze as simply a Fancy Phone - AND have the wherewithal to replace it every couple of years - a case is undoubtedly either a Nuisance or merely a Fashion Statement.
But for others, choosing a good case seems to be a reasonably important decision - otherwise there would not be nearly as many posts on the subject as there are...

well to each their own I guess, I generally change phones every 12 months or so. I guess I cant justify using a case to cover the phone

Kursell Case
This case is ok I own but I like my Kursell orbit Flex Case a lot better the flip leather lid Comes off thats so great plus I love the tight plastic over the keyboard the best case I ever seen

This case is ok ... but I like my Kursell orbit Flex Case a lot better the flip leather lid Comes off thats so great plus I love the tight plastic over the keyboard....
There are several nice looking cases available - the Kursell is one & Pdair makes a couple, although recall looking at others as well - that utilize the Plastic Sheath Over The Keyboard approach. Looked long & hard at several of these, as (like the Kursell) some have a very elegant look!
Unfortunately could not get past the plastic sheath. This strays into "personal preference" territory, but
1) Dislike the "feel" of the plastic on top of the keyboard;
2) A plastic sheath seems to force the two layers of the Fuze apart. That should vary with the type of plastic used: if I hold the Fuze up to a bright background it APPEARS that the gap between the halves should be adequate for a precisely THIN sheet... Overall fit of the Lower part of the case might have an impact here as well, but that's hard to gauge without buying Every Case on the market...
3) Was concerned that the plastic would not WEAR well, given sufficient usage. Yellowing, becoming ratty at the edges, & stretching all seem likely.
Case selection is like PIM choice: Personal Preferences play a major role in product selection, and there are multiple Solutions that are equally viable according to the preference of the end user.
Slip case, or Attached case?
Belt Clip, or Not? (Detachable, or Not? Rotating or Fixed?...)
Leather, Metal, Silicone, Hard Rubber, Or ??
Removable Top Cover (Kursell) or Permanently Attached?
Holders for data cards, styli, Other Things?
Have LOVED the RhinoSkin that has served as the Daily Carry Case for my Axim. But it is an Industrial looking piece of hardware - rather clunky & now somewhat beat up in appearance. So also have a nice (Belkin) Leather case that I use for "need a suit jacket" events.
Frankly - along similar lines - can imagine times where I might forego the extra protection of the Capdase and simply carry the Fuze in the Innocase, as it certainly presents less bulk when in the Seidio...
Options are Nice, but trying TOO many gets expensive!

Looking to also purchase the seidio innocase, but before I do can ppl confirm if it gives problems on pushing on the screen. Have had such cases that seem okay for a few weeks, but then the screen becomes unresponsive due to the case pushing on the touch portion of the screen.
Thanks

Cases

I am still searching for the perfect case, but I have found one that is better than the original (well, that wouldn't be hard!).
This is 'Inno Pocket' model OX-0313, and I got mine brand new off Ebay 'Buy Now' for £20 plus £3.50 postage.
It is made of "Light weight aircraft grade scratch resistant anodized aluminium" and weighs 75g. It has lots of cut-outs and you can use charger (although not cradle), headphones and camera without taking it out of the case. You can answer the phone, and end a call with it in its case, too (which is what I like), although without being able to access the screen, you still have to open it to dial.
On the downside it isn't very well made - when it's open the cover sort of wobbles on its hinges, although it's OK when closed. It's also not easy to open (definitely can't do it with one hand) and would have been greatly improved with a nice, swish press 'n' spring catch (I'm sure there's a technical term for this...). Also the texture of the case is such that it is incredibly slippery; I'm sure i'm far more likely to drop it, or that it will slide off a surface. Plus it's a bit awkward getting the stylus out. You have to remember to get it out before you open it, otherwise you have to close it again...
But I haven't reverted back to the old case yet...
Has anyone got anything better yet?
I find its best to not put the XDA II into a case, it rattles around in my jacket pocket along with my keys and wallet and stuff and doesnt seem any worse for wear after 4 months like that, i put a scrren protector on as soon as i got the unit and it is a bit scratched but the screen underneath is mint
slippery
It is incredibly slippery. I have already dropped it down two flights of stairs - and no damage!
I use my old Toshiba E570 case.
Also the stylus slips out too easily - so I use my thumbnail sharpened appropriately.

I am using the Proporta Aluminium case for my XDA II. The case itself is slippery so I got some Egrips from Egrips.com to stick on the case. It works for me. A wee bit of bluetack stuck down the stylus slot will keep it there even if you a cartwheel.
Cheers.
When I had the XDA1 I hated the case. I had to use it in the beginning because I was so afraid of it being scratched or damaged. In the end though I stopped using it (even after putting some protective pads on the magnet connectors when I discovered they were scratching the phone) as it looked a bit naff.
The XDA2 one is much better! It's lined with felt and there are no places where it can seemingly scratch the phone. Yeah it's a bit obstructive and you look an idiot if you try using the phone with half the case dangling from your ear (I've found the best way is to take it out when you have to use the phone), but otherwise I'm very impressed with how much better in all aspects the 2 is over the 1. It feels more like an expensive phone (which it very much is) and the case feels more protective than the old one.
I've got a screen protector for it too and though it dulls the screen a bit (annoying in the sunlight) they're well worth having. No more fanatical cleaning (and risking getting bits under the screen) due to fingerprints on the screen etc.

Recommended Prophet cases?

Which case for the Prophet would you recommend?
My main criteria are:
- Screen protection
- As slim as possible
- Leather (desired)
- Cheap
Any advice is greatly appreciated.[/list]
the slimest there is... you can't use the touchscreen unfortunatly (or am I wrong maybe?)
anyway I havn't seen a leather case that wouldn't make a brick out of a prophet. I find it strange - you can quite comfortably put a prophet in your pocket, wich makes it very portable, but you can't have a case that doesn't spoil it.
You might find the following case suitable. I believe it adds the least volume to the unit given that it is conformal and very thin. (There might be something better, but I'm not aware of it.)
http://www.ebcases.com/Detail.bok?no=3331
There is also the possibility to customize the case as well for a fee. Thus one can ask the supplier to minimize thickness rather than providing the maximal protection to the unit.
After much pondering I came to the conclusion that having no case was best. It keeps the prophets small foot print and is still very useable. Invest in a good screen protector though.

I felt exactly the same until I accidentally dropped mine about 2 1/2 feet onto a tile floor and it dented/scratched the top corner of the device. Not extreme, but it was only a light tap on the ground.
I immediately went out and bought a gel skin made for the Prophet. Adds nothing to the weight/size/form-factor of the device.
I saw one that had a flip down plastic screen protector as well, but figured that was a little overkill.
Of course, these are in cell phone shops all over Asia, don't know about other countries.
I've found many people on the street using these skins instead of cases just because of the form-factor element. It's a shame to ruin such portability and, dare I say, elegance, to protect it.
But even now I feel like one of those guys that leaves his television remote control in the cellophane wrap so that it won't get any wear and tear... it was made to be used!

Hi vsc, that is a great case - the best I have seen so far! Thanks for the link.
I see that this case is for the Jam though - are the Jam and Jamin 100% identical (the form is identical (I believe) but not the button arrangement, right?).
I will contact ebcases directly also.
Thanks!
I asked the guys in the UAE and was told that the JAM / JAMin are identical. From the spec sheet they are within 0.2mm in size.
To be honest I had one of these in hand a few weeks ago and there was no issues with button placement and fitement in the case.

That is the reason why I really think that a protecting case is necessary (in case the device falls that is) - specially for a $600 device.
On the flip side, adding unnecessary bulk to a device which was purchased due to its slim form factor is kind of contradicting. Thus, I am searching for a very slim case, which still provides protection.
thulsey, which silicon case are you using? Have you heard of Skintight cases from Pamwarelabs http://www.palmwarelabs.com/Products/ProdList.aspx?CateID=36 ?

Thanks vsc!
As long as the cut outs are not covering buttons, I guess thats fine then.
So, from the pictures of their website, the case really looks very tight and it appears that it doesnt add any (at least not too much) bulkiness to the s200. How does the case appear if you saw this it in person and on a Prophet? Do the pictures reflect the impression given on their site?
What about these?
Has anyone tried out the aluminium cases like the ones sold on expansys? Or this one for example
http://www.seidioonline.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=71
I know the last one is kind of not a case, but a carying holster, but nevertheless...
Yes the pictures are a good representation of the actual case.
Note that the cover flap has padding on the outside surface, but the supplier can manufacture the case without the padding to reduce volume. There is a hard card within the flap, so I don't consider the padding to serve any purpose.
On the other hand the case I'm using while I wait for the leather case is from Brando,
http://shop.brando.com.hk/bwsiliconecase_details.php?id=49
Simply put the unit in your pocket with the screen facing inward.

I will contact the supplier to see how much the case would be without the padding. Anything, which makes the case a little slimmer helps - specially for that price.
Btw, is it cumbersome to put the silicon case on and off? I was thinking about the silicone case but I would have to put the device out of the case every day (for charging in desktop cradle and car mount, etc) and dont want o fiddle with this each day. Way easier to simply slight it into a case.
Changes to the case were US$10.
With respect to the Brando case...seconds. The problem is really related to the material's affinity for dust. Drop it in your pockets and you would be amazed as to the mount of crud it picks up. It wipes off with a microfiber cloth or cleans up with water.

got a brando silicone skin and it tore in the corner of the screen where it is thin. It also had a spot on the keypad that was thicker making it look like a black dot and not transparent. I found it to fit very well, but was a little thick, felt like a Wizard when holding it. Dust isn't too bad if you're not a dirtbag.

The one I'm using is very similar to the one from Palmwarelabs. It even has raised icons on each of the buttons so you can (sort of) feel what you're pressing. I think it's a local brand here in Taiwan, but I'll look into it and see if I can find it on the web.
When I was searching, I noticed that there are several different thicknesses of silicone, and various levels of craftsmanship that go into cutting things out (like the screen area, infrared port, etc.)
Get the flexskin from www.boxwave.com!!
You won't be dissapointed!

hey vsc, I talked to EBCases today and they said that the case for the Jam wont fit the Jamin due to different button arrangements.
According to EBCases' customer service agent (very friendly and helpful!), they are working on a new case right now, which will then fit the Jamin. The new case would probably take another 4 weeks in order to be released.
I might just wait for this new case, since their case really is the best I have seen so far (and I have looked at a lot of them).

Pocket-friendly cases

Unlike most here, I want to be able to put my Kaiser in a case, and put in my pocket. No swiveling, no clipping, and no holstering. I know the Kaiser doesn't have the most pocket-friendly form-factor, but hell, I have to make do with what I've got.
The slimmer and lighter the case, the more pocket-friendly it is.
Any recommendations?
I'm considering:
PDAir's Vertical Leather Pouch http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6590
& Seido's super slim rubberized case http://www.htcforums.com/kaiser-tilt-tytn-p4550-f13/seido-slim-case-t11.html
& PDAir's Aluminum case http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6561
Be very careful of the screen in your pocket. Two of your choices will not protect the screen. Good luck.
I've tried several different cases, and I too have opted to just keep the phone in my pocket. And I don't use any protective covers, but I do so with some rules.
1. NOTHING in the same pocket with it.
2. Always screen facing toward me.
3. ALWAYS be aware it is in my pocket. (IE, no bumping into anything, no leaning on anything, and no squating down and putting my phone in a bind)
I have to say after 10 months of use, it still looks almost new.

I've used this case for a long time (had a similar one for my Wizard) and really like it:
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6562
Only downside is the top and bottom do add thickness to the phone overall, but during the summer when I'm wearing cargo shorts, it goes into my pocket nicely. Biggest downside is the case fits tight so if you are on the phone the slightest bump will tend to hang up the call (or other buttons get pressed). So now I'm looking at a new case they offer:
http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=7423#thumb
This leaves the buttons exposed, gives you a cover over the screen, and then with a simple unsnap you can get to the keyboard (and it appears no plastic cover over the keys like the one I have now.
I really like the Seidio Slim, but I really need a flap to cover the screen for protection (whether its in my pocket or on my belt, I just don't like the screen being unprotected). I wish the Seidio holster had a removable clip as that could be workable then...
depending on the size of your pocket, the krusell orbit works quite well

I bought one just like the new PDAir, but it was a cheap ebay case. Best $15 I've spent - has saved the phone from a number of drops, fits really well, and still fits in my pocket (it does add bulk, but an acceptable amount and I really wanted something to cover the screen).
Everything is easily accessible, and using the keyboard is a breeze.
The only drawback is if you're slipping between a car and your pocket. I've got a metal case for it in silver (It's actually the Hermes case) that i use but most the time I don't bother. It's not been too bad. But then, I am covered by Insurance

Capdase Bifold Leather Case for TouchPro/A&T Fuze

Have been using this case with my Fuze for a couple of weeks now, and depending upon one's Preferences it could range anywhere from the Best Thing Going to a Total Waste.
I will put it somewhere in the middle: the case shows some Brilliant Ideas, which (Alas!) have either been Poorly Executed or simply Not Well Thought Out - although, again, personal preference may determine how you choose between the two!
Purchase was made through an E-bay Store:
http://stores.ebay.com/Accessories-Pro-shop
The case is also available from an outfit called "Xell" - and there does seem to be a connection between Xell and "Accessories-Pro-shop."
Thumbs Up:
1) Seems to be well made, with good stitching, a nice feel (and Appearance!) to the leather, and a good magnetic clasp.
2) Holds the Fuze securely WITHOUT putting a sheet of plastic over the keyboard.
3) Allows access to all controls - including sliding keyboard & rear camera lens - without having to remove the Fuze from the case.
Thumbs Sideways: Things that some people might like, but which lead to problems:
1) Built in holders for MicroSD cards (2) and SIM card (1).
2) Small "Paper Pocket" for storing bits of paper
3) Pouch to carry extra stylus
4) Built in Stand to hold device at angle while resting on desktop.
Thumbs Down:
1) The Paper Pocket is too small to carry a Credit Card - and too tight to permit easy access.
2) The holders for the SD/SIM Cards press up against the screen when the case is closed - and can (DID) cause unintended commands to be issued - specifically, either CUTTING OFF phone calls, or UNINTENTIONALLY DIALING phone calls. The former is due to the placement & height of the SIM card carrier, while the latter is due to the placement & height of a Leather Flap that covers the card holders (protects screen from metal card holders, and looks prettier).
3) The Stylus pouch causes the "grip" of the stylus to rest against one of the tabs that secures the Fuze in place, and thus prevents the back (end binding) of the case from sitting tightly against the Fuze.
4) All of these Features combine to produce a package that ranges from 1.25" to nearly 1.5" thick (at the highest point of the metallic clasp), and makes for a Significant Brick in one's pocket.
This is strictly an In Your Pocket (or Bag) case: there is no Belt Clasp. Considered this an ADVANTAGE when ordering the case - however, due to the WIDTH of the case-with-Fuze, there are time when a Belt Clasp might be welcomed.
After having several calls DISCONNECTED, I removed the card holders. This also had the effect of making the case slightly less bulky, as that flap now sat closer to the screen.
However, this produced a situation where the Leather Flap for the card holders was now able to cause a REDIAL as the top stitching that held it in place now pressed up against the screen.
Removing the leather flap eliminated that problem, AND permits the outer flap to rest tightly against the screen, thus eliminating the GAPS (that can be seen in the photos that I HOPE to figure out how to attach to this message!).
Alas, the end binding was cut to allow the additional thickness (of the items we have just removed), so now the outer flap of the case tends to slide back and forth across the face of the Fuze whenever the case is grasped / manipulated in certain ways (but not always).
It turns out that putting the extra Stylus into the pouch in the case prevents most of this sliding action, but does not permit the flap to come out to the same distance as its opposite number.... Am thinking about putting a small felt 'bumper' where the pouch is, although wonder whether it will adhere to the leather... (Or perhaps put something INSIDE the stylus pouch.)
As noted above, will ATTEMPT to post some pictures of the case. If that works, will also post another message with pix of the Bytech case originally purchased & a couple of Post Surgery pix of the Capdase....
A few extra photos of the Capdase Leather Case, showing
the "Paper Pocket" location,
the amount of space taken up by the device carrying clasp and its attachment to the leather case,
post-minor surgery, with the card holders removed (have not taken a picture with the leather flap out of the way, but that should be easy enough to imagine)
the height of the SIM holder: 2 pennies high, which doesn't seem like a lot, but was evidently sufficient to activate the "End Call" touch-screen button...
Finally, here are a few pictures of the Capdase Bifold along with the Bytech Slip Case that we originally purchased.
The Bytech looks OK, especially in some of the pictures, but in Real Life the Capdase has a much richer look AND feel. On the other hand, the Bytech cost around $6 (box is marked $12.99, but would have felt ripped-off at that price!), as opposed to something like $25 for the Capdase (including S&H).
The Bytech has a large Belt Clip. This is sturdy, but can neither be adjusted nor removed. It also results in both cases being nearly the same height (or Depth, depending upon perspective).
Note that the Bytech allows the Fuze to protrude slightly from either end, holding the device in place with a couple of tabs that are each stretch-fabric secured at one of their ends: struck me as a probable failure point, given enough usage.
There is also a small RIDGE inside of the Bytech that tended to interfere with one end of the Fuze's screen protector (that was not, admittedly, perfectly flat), and resulted in lifting that corner (lower right) on several occasions. That corner of the screen protector is now CUT at an angle as a result of this interference.
The interior of the Bytech is some sort of flocked material that feels surprisingly rough to the touch.
Did like the FULL flap on the Bytech. It is secured by 2 magnets and allows the case to lie flat when laid on a table.
The Bytech is model "WEST107-SMALL Black Case Nokia N95," but the box is also marked "Fits most small size phones."
Nice job on the comparison. Thx

You're welcome. Tried to think about what I would appreciate reading / seeing in a "mini-review."
The Capdase case really LOOKS nice, feels like a quality piece, and like the fact that there is NO PLASTIC over the keyboard - but it is certainly not a perfect design: either the top flap sits too tightly upon the screen (as case is delivered), OR it flops about a bit too much (post "surgery").
Am thinking seriously about ordering one of the thinner 'snap-on' cases (if able to determine which ones are actually "thinner") and just using the TOP portion of the snap-on case, partially in hopes it would "fill out" the Fuze, but MAINLY hoping it would serve as a 'buffer' between the Fuze screen and the front of the Capdase case (or whatever similar case may be found in the future).
Great fun!

Possible Case types?

We all know sliders are limited by their form factor for case makers, so we probably won't see a traditional silicone/ rubber shell (and definitely not a wallet case), but what types of cases do you think we'll get? Since the screen slides up from the base, any case would only be able to cover the base, making a screen protector a must buy. The thin bezels/ curvature of the screen make it hard to imagine a case that can wrap cleanly around it.
Look up Torch cases. I had an otterbox on mine
My last slider was the Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G, and it definitely was Epic lol. It will likely have to be a two piece cover that snaps on.
I understand it needs to be a two piece hard shell case, but with the Priv's unique form factor (curved sides and almost no bezel), it's hard to imagine a case being able to snap on the the edges at all. I guess it's one of those things where I'll just have to see it to believe it
Cases - sliders & wallet styles - are already available for the priv, direct from blackberry: http://store.shopblackberry.com/sto...ategoryID.70448700/sort.displayName ascending
I can recommend the official flip case. Looks posh and works well with auto screen on.
I prefer to use carry leather holster pouch case. I need a case lasts as long as the phone. I googled and found PDair might be a good choice. Have any one use PDair holster pouch? or any other suggestions?
Some great cases here http://www.tetded.com/home/en/

Just bought the shell/holster from Verizon. I have used this style for some time now and love it. I slide my ring finger through the kickstand to help keep from dropping. Hopefully they get cheaper on ebay. My all time favorite is the "snap tail" , but they don't make it for the PRIV yet.
