HDD comparison - Shift General

Dear shift users,
As we are always talking about installing other OSes or drives, I think that it worths to compare different solutions.
I have decided to begin with the HD Tach software in version 3.0.4.0 with 2 drives.. the shift 40GB and a IDE 120GB 7200rpm over USB.
Here are the results :
{

}
and usb from the shift
and 6GB SD Card from USB .. I have tested with USB keys.. but 1 and 2GB is not good and 4GB is almost the same than this result
With the result, it does'nt seem that bad to install an OS on a USB drive. Someone has told me that it was possible... I will try to find how and to post it.
Regards
The koala.

OMG, is our disk speeds really that bad..........

yeah... really... I would like to get the HD Tach of people who have changed their drive.... is it possible? And it would be fine to precise if it is a 5mm or 8mm .. I will upload the post with news.. and try to make some graphics with comparison !

From memory, it's a 5mm but people have build 8mm in to it.
There is a thread about some where.
edit:
wonder what speeds the controller can handle...

Due to an apparent hard disk failure yesterday I tried to run a portable version of windows from a USB stick (actually a micro sd card reader with an 8GB card in it) to try and attempt some kind of recovery from within an OS but it didn't work so I'm guessing there's more to be done than just putting an OS on an external drive. I'll explore this more later and try to install Windows 7 onto an external drive, unless someone else beats me to it.
Luckily, my Hard Disk picked up again, but unfortunately had to go through system restore
Better that than having to buy a new drive though I suppose.

if you want to restore some data... you can use GetDataBack for NTFS.. which is able to read data that have been erased and formatted.. it's a great tool (but you need to pay the tool) which works like a charm !

added : SD card from USB
testing with a 1GB USB stick.

Thanks for that. There wasn't a lot on the drive anyway, apart from Windows updates. I really need to get round to slipstreaming my updates into the recovery partition (easier said than done I think ) and putting my recovery partition onto a bootable USB stick. Nearly lost it all yesterday.
A bit too close for comfort!

yeah I know this .. I say that people should say if the disk they test speed is a 5mm or 8mm ;-) .. but I know the default is a 5mm (GAL = low height = 5mm)

If anyone could give me a tip for taking a screen cap on the Shift as it doesn't have a PrtSc button then I'll put up the screen dump.
Stats from the long test are:
Random Access: 0.1ms
CPU Utilization: 0%
Average Read: 86.1 MB/s (although on the bar chart is says 95.9 MB/s)
- so about 3 times as fast as the original, and fantastic seek times.

you can use the "snipping tool" that's the best way in vista or 7.
just do : "new -> windows snip" and you just need to choose the windows and here you are ^^ please choose not to display the red borders. thx

Have attached the screen cap now, noticed that the CPU usuage was way up on previous reading.

Can you tell if it is a 5mm or 8mm ? I guess it is a 5mm (seeing H5 at the end of the number of the SSD) and how much you have paid for it?
Cheers !

The SSD was 5mm - slotted directly into the rubber shroud as a direct replacement and I paid $410 AUD delivered.
It is a lot of money for a drive smaller than the Shift came with But it is quicker for sure. Boot times for Windows XP Fundamentals was clocked at 17.5 seconds and Bootvis showed that it was the CPU slowing it down rather than the drive.
Re-installing OSes and doing benchmarks the drive got quite hot, so I am not really expecting any benefits with extending battery life.

More Charts
Adding some more charts showing Read and Access times

..and Random Access
I like these ones the best - big performance improvement here with the SSD

Do you have some bigger images?

New Universal's Challenger

Has anyone come across any news about this Samsung SPH-P9000. Have a look here http://www.i4u.com/article7155.html I think it'll definitely rock the market
It looks nice, but too easy to break for me. The folding keyboard just makes it prone to breaks. They should have stuck with a laptop design or a similar design to the IMate KJam where the keyboard slides out, with an ability to use a wireless or BT full size or folding keyboard. Better yet the BT Virtrual Keyboards.
1.3MP Camera, there are phones already out with better MPs. Plus the price is definitely higher. I think this would flop.

Uhm, I think that's total storage including the sd slot
there's probably a 2Gb micro sd card in the slot
there is also no MB behind the numbers. I think they've used some reg hack or program to include storage card size

Nope. There is no 'reghack' to do that
And the flame will have 2GB ROM, but, unlike universal, it will come with micro sd instead
While the storage on this is fantastic I think to what techtalkonline is referring to is program memory. So far I have heard that the 64MB is the limit what WM5 can address and use. This sounds logical because so far there is not a single WM5 device in the market with a program memory above 64MB. However if the picture is correct it sounds too good to be true.
By the way when I say that the 64MB is the limit what WM5 can address I am not referring to the older devices which have been retrofitted with WM5

Yep, the picture clearly shows it as the "Main" memory figures tab as active. I agree that it could be a hacked reading, but sure hope not! Regarding the 64MB limit, i think by the time this device hits the shelves, it will hopefully have WM6 as the OS? I am not sure of the memory limits of WM6 over WM5's 64MB?
How is this a replacement for Universal without a keyboard? The whole point of having a Universal is the keyboard.
Seems more like a replacement for Wizard or TyTn.
No keyboard?
Well, yes, it does "lack" a keyboard-but I didn't buy my Exec for the keyboard, rather for all else it offered.
I suspect there are a lot of owners who'd agree.
As a tradeoff, you get :-
Intel Xscale(R) PXA 270 processor at 520 Mhz.
- 2.0 Mega Pixel camera (not interpolated)
- NVIDIA(R) GoForce(R) 5500 GPU
-Wireless LAN 802.11b+g
- SRS Mobile HD surround sound
- USB On-The-Go
- 2 GB Flash ROM + 64 MB RAM
- TV out connector
- 3G
- Built-in FM tuner
- Business card reader (through camera)
- dock with stereo speakers (at least in promo pics)
And, without the keyboard, you get a far more hand- and pocket-friendly device.
Now, if they added GPS to this puppy ...
I got agree: I would prefer to have a keyboard as well. Really does make a better all round device.
If you go to PPCthoughts, it is clearly written there that it has 128mb of ram(instead of 64mb)

2. do you have tabpages (like I.E 7) or is this possible with another program ...
3. is gmail possible with i.e
4. does a sd-card with 150x a lot better than a normal one or is a normal 4gb sd enough.
5. does anytong got it to work to run cpu at 240 steady every you start your pda (automaticly )
so everytime you start your pda it runs on 240 mhz ..
6. does wisbar 3 runs on wm 5 so i can have a vista skin.
7. and did anyone try to download a program to download stuuf wit a torrent downloader on youre pda ..
( a torrent downloader on youre pda does it work ??)
thanks for your help so far you are great , keep up the great work ..
Welcome to the forum!
Don't worry about your English level, many of us here including my self are not native English speakers. (I owe a lot to the spell checker!)
Please make sure you read the WiKi and search the forums before asking. The answers are likely to be there already waiting for you.
Now to your questions:
1) No, currently there are no real viruses for Windows Mobile and though scanners exist they are way to heavy for a device with 200MHz processor.
2) Minimo (mozilla) has tabs but it is a very slow browser. You should check out NetFront and PIE Plus. Opera is good but their free Java version sends all your browsing information and your phone number back to the company so its kind of like spyware.
3) Not sure about IE but it should work with the built in outlook using POP3. There are some threads here about it.
4) The SD speed makes no difference in the phone because of the OS and the slow BUS.
5) There is a free program called OMAPCLOCK which can overclock the Prophet, but when you go to standby the CPU resets it self. There is another freeware (sorry don't remember the name) that can restart OMAPCLOCK when you turn on the device.
Note that the speed and stability with which you can run varies from device to device.
Unfortunately, I don't have answers for 6 and 7.

my main qustions are now helped
6. Yes, there is a version for WM5
7. Yes. WinMobile Torrent

thanks super , iam sorrt for all my stupid quistions ,
i just got another one (qustion)
i want to buy a new 4gb sd (or 4 gb mmc) card but would ui need to do , do i stuuf it into my otek immditley or do i stuuf it into my pc and put music ont it , do do i need to format it fist ???
i dont want to screw up my sd card or my prophet
does this sd kaart works with the prophet (page is in dutch.SD tranced 4gb
or this one SD tranced 4 gb 150 X or this mmc card
a 4GB tranced MMC PLUS card .
my prefer is the trancend normal 4 gb SD card
or do the all work ..
There is no need to format SD cards before use, though if you want to do so its ok too.
You can use it in your phone right away, but copying files through ActiveSync is slow so if you have a card reader I recommend you use that to copy your music and any other files bigger than 10MB simply because it will save you a lot of time.
I couldn't quite read the language on the sites you provided, but as long as the card is not SDHC (High Capacity - new format) it will work with your Prophet. Some 4GB cards are SDHC and some are regular SD (all cards larger than 4GB are SDHC).
You should check with the sit to make sure it is regular SD.
oke thanks , the pages were in dutch .

in order to mount the sd card from totalcommender in snapvue:
first go in vista and right click / proprieties/ share on the sd card icon or usb flash/ hdd. and allow share thraugt network
when done the acess path will be displayed
then go on snapvue, and start usbtool
once snapvue is linked open totalcommender and go to plugin / lan and click on add a new server
type the path of the device you want to mount (should be \\"nameofyourcomputer"\"letter of the drive you want to mount"
thats it you can acess sd card from snapvue!!!!!
I guess it's better to find a navigation software for vista and use the full resolution.
Or we find a solution for using the SD without vista.
Still dreaming.

OMG I made some sort of joke/assumption, which turns out to be true.
It is helpful in the way that we can use TomTom and other large space eating apps on our HTC Shift, something many of us, I assume did not really understand/know. I didn't !
In your car there's power, so no problem to have vista running.
Reading through the posts here and there I read about accessing your shift via the network, and seeing TomTom work in the YouTube clip, some gears started running, finally.
Hope it helps many !
nothing special
this method for acessing sd card or hd drive is only usefull to test capacities of the shift.
as vista is running the battery drain is huge, then there is no more interest in the longbattery life of snapvue. when vista is closed or in hibernation the usbtool can't run,
some months ago comnex said she was sure sd slot wath directly linked to the msn 7200 chip and she was able to see the sd slot from SPL..
sorry we need to be patient for REAL conexion with sd card.
With a charger we are fine

This is totally true of course, however, in your car, where you use navigation, there's most likely a charger.
Up till now, I, and I'd like to see how many others, simply overlooked this possibility of mounting a Vista share and thus be able to use favorite navi software like TT or Destinator.
There are a number of threads where people are looking for the "best" PC navigation software, possibly because they, just like me, did not know "one could do it"
I'm really joyed by this "discovery" as flight software like SeeYou Mobile and WinPilot will now also have enough space !

I prefer to use Vista with Sygic Drive or IGO8. It works perfectly, much better that any PDA because It uses its 3D graphic card. Or course I use a car charger....

maybe[OT]...
Me, like many of you posting here, just discovered the possibility to see a SD card under WM... That's why I was so amazed
For a moment, forget about TT and any other navigation program: I can easily understand that Vista side is much better than WM side for running any program.
Just think about the possibility to expand your memory in WM: datas, some programs... When you need them, they're there. I use my shift mostly linked to a powersource, so I donìt mind if I have to run Vista "underground".
Of course I'm waiting for cmonex and all others to solve the "direct-link-to-the-SD-card" problem.

Exactly - if Vista is booted, you might just as well use that for the most part. The reason I'd want to use apps on the WM side is to conserve battery life and having Vista booted rather defeats the object IMHO.
Of course, if you've got WM only apps that you need to use, it's a fine solution but it isn't anything new.

I can't use the \\shift-vista\sharename as a source for TomTom Maps.
The files of the Benelux map are shared as "storage card" and the files are accesible from Windows Mobile, however, TomTom doesn't pick up that they are there,
@nicolas.Maigne :
Can you post more info how you got the files detected by WinMO / TomTom ? Help very much appreciated.

Does an equivalent of i-FunBox exist for Android?

I hate the way MTP in general is so slow and clunky on my Windows 7, and my Wifi is a crapshoot much of the time so wifi transfer solutions like AirDroid don't really do the trick, especially with large files.
It's quite astounding that a program like i-FunBox for my old iPhone 4 can transfer files back and forth across phone and PC at blazing fast transfer speeds, when I thought Android had matured enough to do exactly the same.
I know there's an official transfer program for Mac, but what about for Windows users? I'd rather do all my transferring through a USB cable and with the speedier transfer connection that should be possible without having MTP in the way. Isn't there anything that could read/mount an ext2/ext4/whatever filesystem as easily?
Maybe I need some special drivers....
What USB port type on the machine you are using? 12 or 3 ?
If I connect up in mass storage mode mines rocket fast...

Try the Wondershare MobileGo program. Might be what your looking for.

Windows has terrible ext4 support. I'd suggest you install a beginner distro of GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux usually uses ext4 by default so I think you could figure out a way to mount your nexus from there. Haven't personally tried it though, so I don't really know if it's possible, but it's a better shot than using windows.
If you're a beginner to GNU/Linux, I'd suggest a distro called Gentoo. It's the best of the best for beginners, so install Gentoo now.

Seriously though, if your Wifi is crap, you can try to create a Wifi hotspot with your phone (assuming you have a capable phone), and use this network for file transfer.
Gentoo is complicated as hell! There is no GUI setup to install it, you need quite a lot of linux knowledge to install and use gentoo.
It is a 'beginner' distro in a way where you do learn a lot about linux with it, that is, if you want to. It takes a lot of time and effort though.
The actual beginner distros are Mint and Ubuntu (go for LTS (long term support) with ubuntu, the latest version is buggy as hell).
Mint is based on ubuntu, so software and tips, tweaks for ubuntu also apply to mint.
If you want a distro just for the sake of syncing with N7, go for mint. It's lightweight, fast, and quite simple to use.
Be careful if installing on SSD, you need to make some adjustments: google 'mint/ubuntu ssd'
I have had a Jail broke iPhone for 2 years and often use i-funbox to transfer files as I hate iTunes. I recently acquired my nexus 7 and love being able to just open it as a drive in My Computer (I use XP). I was astonished how much faster the nexus transfers files. A typical 750 mb file will take 15 mins with ifunbox but 1-2 mins with nexus (I think my XP box only has USB 1.0! it is ten years old).
Transfer using my iPhone hotspot is also impressively fast....I use ES file explorer to browse shared folders on the XP box.
(I have tried to get Ubuntu running dual boot on the machine (it has a32 GB drive so just about room) it worked OK, but I had difficulty with the drivers for the very legacy Nvidia graphics card, which i'm too much of a Linux noob to overcome). We will meet again, Linux, we will meet again,...........this isn't over.

Maybe I need some special drivers....

there is like a thousand of empty folders in the SD card and there is too many .tmp files
i tried to use SD card file recovery but the result was Zero
it's weird that the SD card is 8GB and there is just 5.6GB free space with empty folders and there is no hidden files
should i format the SD card ?
***EDIT***
i found something interesting ( wp_ss_201307011_0001.tmp )
now how to change the extension to jpg
***EDIT*** (2)
what a shame
upload the files...
Check the partitions in disk managment, might have one hidden.
I have confermed real seen pictures of gdr3 and this is not gdr3 microsofts mobile os is amed at hardwhare spects and the gdr3 update is no different most wont beabele to take advantage of the gdr3 updates other then the notifications.
when it does hit there will be a new kid in town wp8.1 device in full hd 1920x1080 rez.
if that was gdr3 the tiles would not look like that.
WP8.1 branch. (Maybe!)

Yea and nobody has a funny feeling about these things??????
Those things are always found by ones who are "Phone minded" and by "coincidence" members of a cociety.
Never by a child, or a housewife, or ................. Always found by a "geek".
Why on earth should someone put a picture on a sd card, specialy those guys who forces anyone else in the cloud.
And Always a picture, never ever some specific documents, no names or familypics just one single "mysterious" picture.
Lousy security or stupid people at work................yea sure
I belief its a sneaky act of commercial, just to make people curious and eager to buy

All non-public Windows pre-release builds have that watermark on desktop.

maybe millions of housewives or children find thousands of these pictures everyday. But since they are not "geek" to them it's just a stupid photo of a phone. It requires a geek to see the details etc.
yeah, it happens a lot lately,
lost sd cards/usb sticks, hell even complete unlocked prototype cell phones.
And if i red of the sanctions, they are even bigger fools then they already wore.
Taking sneaky pictures.
Taking it outside
And for the final touch .....losing it.
Those offenders should not getting fired,
they should be getting shot at dawn.
just too many coincidences
But thats my opinion.

if you don't know how to change the extensions just please upload the files .. don't write anything on that SD card.
if the "memory" is really what most people believes to, then it might have a partition for WP 8.1
the new tiles layout matches vs GDR3 (notifications tile asterisk means a new message) and consolidated message center with Skype embedded
should be worth trying to recover the partition (some mfg use a microsd for internal storage) partition for system and rest for user available space (disregard having an additional slot)
P.S. is a MicroSD or just an SD?
WP8 devices are not using SD cards as internal storage. There were some WP7 devices that did but those activated the security features on the card so when it was removed from the device the only way to get the card usable again was formatting it (which deactivated the SD security feature). It's therefore highly unlikely that there is a system partition on a WP8 device's SD card.
