TomTom or other Nav Programs on G1 - G1 General

I am thinking of Getting or the HTC dream (G1phone) or the HTC Touch Pro.
This is cause i spend a lout of time outside of buildings (traveling).
Is it Possible to install TomTom Nav on the G1? or is there a good Nav Program that can be installed on it (that covers Europe, mainley Holland where I live)?
Hope to get good news:
Steven

Sorry, I misread before voiting. I'd love to see a TomTom app but right now there's no real option for navigation. AndNav is stuck in europe and 1Click does not re-reoute real time.

I have bad GPS reception where I am (Locale Hates it unfortunately =[)
I hope there's a voice based GPS system available for the G1 soon, it'd be brilliant for biking around the UK

Maybe someone can be nice enough to like build one that works well (i mean someone like the companies self), cause you never know, Android can be the future

Non Of the above - I pick Copilot

I'm hoping Garmin will come out with mobile xt for android.

Actually i am hoping that Any good Nav program can be brought out for the G1
cause i travel a lot for my sport and i am not good in remembering the roads..... especially from the Netherlands to ........... well anywhere in Europe

I just contacted TomTom.... so we will see what they say

Sent a message to Garmin as well (Magellan stinks). So far, just got automated responses saying that they will reply within 2 business days.

so IF they keep their word we will know in about 2 days
i mean 2 working days..... who knows when they are working

Garmin is coming out with their own phone sometime in the future... I know they have a lot of employees but i don't see it coming soon... I don't want to be a debbie downer, but don't think they will... I know someone on androidcommunity.com had talked to them, but can't remember what they said and can't find it. Sorry, but google should give us a good one.

I have read from the android community, that Garmin will be installed on android with their own device at the half of this year (About July, August). I hope Garmin will be avalible and for G1 too.

I am pretty sure Garmin is using their own OS but could be wrong. If they are using Android as their platform, it WILL work on the G1 then.

Ok, i have a friend of mine who has Garmin at his WM6.1, which means that Garmin can be installed not just in their own OS. Anyway, here is the link what i have read a few days ago at phandroid.com

This is the mail I got from Route 66 today
DAMNIT!!!!
Dear Mr. Demei,
For the moment we will continue developing the existing software, that is for Windows Mobile and Symbian.
If, in the future it will be possible to create software compatible with other operating systems, you will find all the information regarding the products on our website.
Kind regards,

I was using Copilot version 5 for a while before the GPS problem came in to prevent me using it, but that's another story.
The question that I want to ask is, with version 6, were you able to see the addresses in your address book? With version 5 I was not able to do that. Instead of listing the names in address book like it used to under windows mobile 2003, it merely asks me to enter the state and city, but worst is that the keyboard is not there for me to make any entry (both copilot's own keyboared and WM5's keyboard were missing).

Keyboard worked perfectly for me and I was able to navigate to a contact's address. If I didn't answer your question let me know. I've since installed CoPilot on my girlfriends Universal and can check into things for you.
Has any one of you used copilot with either ozVGA or MvRTVGA? I found two problem:
a. It occupies only 1/4 of the screen.
b. when using the Option Menu, only the first tab can be edited. All the other tabs have gone missing.
Come across this problem? How do you fix them?
Thanks.

I'll double that bet and say get IGO as it's even more superior than tomtom6
I can confirm that T-Mobile now stock the Ameo with Co Pilot,
I've received it today. Yet to install it though, will do that later and tell you if I have the same problems regarding screen size and options. I have been told that this was a fault recognised which is why there was a delay in release and the box clease says "now compatible with T-Mobile Ameo" so perhaps a software update..?
Gives you a okay quality mount to put the item in the car, and a car charger also.
Plus I like some of the trace facilities that Co-Pilot has to offer over TomTom Buddies

Never used co-pilot, but iGo beats TomTom with a ****ty stick. It's just more polished, faster to load maps, re-calculates routes quicker.
If you want to try it to compare then it is available on torrent. Although I'm not condoning that type of activity mind you.

Yes, I hope they come out with US maps soon. I would love to give it a try. Just curious as to the accuracy of the product. Looking good is one thing, but getting you where you need to be is another alltogether.
I remember that CoPilot wasn't that accurate based on my experience. So far TomTom has been great.

I-go is much faster and smoother and the routing is far better (largely because you can customise it much more than TomTom). The only thing TomTom does better is traffic (which is not available for I-go)

But to use TMC you need an RDS TMC decoder, which the Ameo does not have. Also, note that TMC messages can be hacked:http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=54812

Sorry to be the one to ask this but what is considered soon? By the end of the month. I can't wait for the stability of WM6. I was spoiled with my Hermes. I forgot what it was like to run WM5.

there you go, someone answer for me. Official release is said to be out next month. I will be getting beta version at the end of the month of beginning of next month. Hopefully they won't delay on the official release.
p.s. Oh, by the way, this time line only applys to DOPOD, HTC might have similar time line too. But T-mobile Ameo user should expect a slide delay if T-mobile ever wanted to release the WM6 for Ameo.
ok
We know about the official release from Dopod, but this ~internal beta testing~ is really internal.
Someone needs to share, the potential of this device only will be explored with WM6...
Meanwhile , I'm still using my Universal....
and next week... The Jesus Phone (aka Iphone)
Why is everyone so kean on WM6 - the official blurb I read only seemed to be rae about html email - is wm6 really worth reinstalling everything? (when it comes ...)
Yes it is. I had a Hermes for the past 10 months and upgraded to WM6 as soon as XDA came out with it. Even from the very first beta versions it was more stable and faster than an official WM5 version. And remember the WM6 versions I was using had been hacked up and stuff added and taken away. Even with all that I would never soft reset it during the day to unfreeze it or to get the memory back that programs had leaked. Grant it there were still programs that had problems due to incompatibility with WM6. But overall it is a faster and smoother operating system.
more bad news...

HTC is also offering WM6 upgrades for the most popular devices in its current range. This includes recently launched “messaging” products, which will enjoy the greatest benefits of Windows Mobile 6, such as the HTC Advantage, the HTC TyTN, the HTC S620, and the HTC P4350. The upgrade will also be available for the award-winning HTC P3300, plus some of our operator-branded devices. The upgrades will be rolled out from June, in line with our operator partners’ strategies.

I'm pretty confident given the Vast similarities of the devices someone on these boards will be able to easily and readily do the port. Therefore I confer my previous statement that once X7501 is released, we will have a WM6 ROM, none of this waiting for September business.

that is very true, anyway, from what i know and the beta testing going on, the wm6 is still possible to be launch in July, so if lucky, you will get it before x7501 comes out. Second, don't forget you need to CID Unlock your device before flashing x7501.

Could one of you who have the beta/development ROM please release it, to the community so that those of us who want to cook something can try and see if we can get something out of it. (maby a briked device )
You can use the rom from your device, it will be a good base for a rom. Beta rom only add gps drivers but remove stability from the same base.

sorry thaihugo... but what do you want to say exactly with this... what's these problems? ...and gps drivers provided with beta rom work with both windows mobile and vista? because there are many gps navigation software for tablet pc that works with vista... so we can delete SD card driver problem for the moment... (and i/we can finally use a PC navigator, for windows vista.. )
GPS drivers are also a top priority for me, and that’s one of the main reasons why I would like it!!
And I also hope the shift project have made some small progress with other things that might be of use.

Let's be clear:
HTC release a rom with gps drivers during product development. I think this is the beta ROM. It has many other problem but it has GPS
HTC release final ROM without GPS because it think GPS is not to be added.
Somebody must take the final rom, and add gps drivers from beta rom or from another rom in it.
Nobody actually is doing this. Cmonex will do this, but it seems to take some time.
If you want, you can do it yourself using your own Rom dumped from your shift, and add some gps drivers files.
If somebody want's to do this, I'll be happy to provide any files or reg regarding gps from the rom. Just give me precise name and key.

maybe she can't release the beta rom because she need the agreement of htc.

finaly mains goal of this project could be the sd card, bluetooth wvga
anyway she made the olio sspl userfriendly and we can cook the final snapvue rom. this is already a great achievement !!!

I agree with the main goals above, but that is just me being selfish (I have no use for GPS - though I will no doubt "have" one if it is available - much to my wife's annoyance). I just really really want voice capability. I can not even record a voice note as the mic does not seem to work. Oh well, I do like everything else about the machine. I suppose I can't have my cake and eat it too.

do you honestly believe that htc is trying to stop cmonex from releasing a rom version? shouldn't they tried this when the spl was released? I don't think htc is giving some real sh.t about what's being done down here.
shoudn't microsoft contact the god damned crackers that make cracked versions of windows vista and contribute to millions of $$ lost. Well most probably they don't. By the present time they should have found out that it's useless.
the rom development is simply delayed. For what reason we don't know. But it isn't the alien invaders, the ninja worriors send by htc to kill cmonex or some major plot in the grand scheme of things. It's just delayed. Maybe they want to add more than only gps activation.

I think that Plan B is to sell the crippled shift, ... anyway... I'm thinking about this... it isn't possible to use drivers from another HTC smartphone that use the same CPU, and that use a clean copy of Windows mobile with all hardware unlocked, and make a beta test cooked rom with those drivers for testing purpose..
we just need to know the progress and whats stopping those roms, is it money or is it time or what? coz we are very anxious about the whole thing
what about 6.1??
beta rom is buggy and slow , a good start could be winmo 6.1 in order to mount the 3d driver of the qualcom msn 7200. the actual 5.2.1620 kernel is too slow on the shift. snapvue would be more pleasent to use with the last kernel.
it would be great to make the gps drivers not mandatory, it is a great handicap for people not using it. qualcomm gps ship drain a lot of battery enven if they are not used!!

Give me the name of the files and registry export you want, and I'll zip them here.
How should we know the keys and files we need if we don't know exactly what the rom contains
That is exactly why I would like to look at the rom so i can find out what improvements that are needed to get it up and running, or intergate it to a new rom

Really? Don't you find it a bit choppy/jerky? It used to run perfectly smooth on my old Vogue, but I think it's due to the much higher resolution.

Does anyone have any idea when TomTom 8 is going to see release for WinMo in general. Thought I'd throw that out there whilst we're semi on the topic .

HD2, WinMo7, 6.x and VS2010...

This is a bit of an odd question, but please bare with me here.
I'm writing my thesis for the uni about C#... with the recent release of VS2010, I thought it'd be great to focus on this IDE and the new features it offers and put those in the thesis as well. I ALSO had an idea to show that one can write apps for mobile devices using C# (duh, but all's fair in the academic world ); I own a HD2, so being able to whip out the phone and show the app working would be a great way to blow some academic minds (well, not really, but I think it'd be nice).
However... VS2010 doesn't support WMo 6.X, which is a serious bummer. There are some rumours that an SDK will be released, but if and when that will happen remains a mystery.
So this leaves me WMo7, which has already been ported to HD2. However, it seems it's not public just yet. And besides not being public, WMo7 will supposedly only allow apps to be installed through MS store... so I have no idea if it'll be possible for me to write an app for that OS and actually use it (it won't be commercial in any way and 100% useless for 99% of people, as it only serves as a live example for my thesis).
To summarize:
- Is is possible for a "basement-programmer" like myself to use WMo7 to show off my own apps without the use of the MS store?
- If so, where could I get my hands on WMo7 for HD2?
- If WMo7 is not available to us mortals, could someone tell me roughly when a public release will be available?
- Or perhaps the whole idea is pointless and I should just develop my app in VS2080 and show it off with the HD2 that I currently own? (It's will be a simple app that connects to some database online without being limited to MSSQL and does something with it, where "something" is yet unspecified)

So... the whole thing about W7 having been ported to HD2 was just a rumour?
I am not sure where you heard that winmo had been ported too hd2? is a link available.
I have just checked Da_G's twitter account and he is still working on the port, he has developed several new tools too help him but is struggling to get some stuff to do with the JTAG controller.
there is a hd2 application which attempts to reimplement some of the functions you can see in the wp7 promo videos but this is not a port it is just an application that looks like wp7.

write your app under 2008 and for 6.5, there hasn't been any word from the source of that rumour for months. C# code is very portable between 2008 and 2010, so don't worry about that. With a little work (can be on the order of hours) you can upgrade your code to 2010 and 7.0 if it ever arrives for HD2.
uuum.. u can show windows phone 7 with a emulator on a pc.. and i think ms released the windows phone 7 tools to programm apps for it alerady..

dont know if its possible to just run the app without the market.. i hope it is, but really dont know >.<
and its impossible to port wp7 to the HD2 right now. yes, it already happened, but that version is very laggy and buggy, so its useless when u want to show it
