New Panels - XPERIA X1 General

I cant understand why the development of new panels is so slow. I thought when i got the X1 that there would be a huge influx of panels being developed. I cant understand why Sony Ericsson are not developing panels on a large scale and are leaving it to developers that are not there, i just find this really dissappointing. Please give your views on this.

Well, the panels are kind-of gimmick. They're not useful enough to be mass producing. Had the panels UI been instant and the loading of panels much faster, perhaps. Now, I just prefer TF3D with the panels installed just to remind me I have an X1 xD

I feel like SE doesn't believe there will be much reason in them developing panels on a large scale, but they are certainly pushing to have more panels made. Hence why the content awards will be accepting panel submissions until the end of the month; I would expect at least a few more at that point.
It's also worth noting that, unless I'm mistaken, the X1 was just recently released to the US (well, when I looked around online the US release date was Jan.12). I predict much of the panel development to come from Americans, if not even more so than from European and other nationalities.

i find only one panel usefull and thats the standard 1 or 2 panel. it pretty much has all the info i and programs that i use on it. panels to me is nothing more than a skin of the today panel, at least the way that i use it. im not a power user but i do like to have different options and tweaks.

When is that Ifonz panel or PointUI panel coming around?

i agree with pretty much all.
I prefer touch flo 3d over panels but like having them for the x1 hype. (hey my phone has fish, then win over all of my customers kids.. like touch the fishy and watch them swim.)
however i also believe that since virtually no one even knows of the x1s exsitance yet (excluding us "Nerds" and the world would call us) there is no real need to roll out panel updates.

Wow
Hope it will work perfectly on my prophet (Old machine)
can't wait
I think that something similar already exists...
You can find it here on XDA....
fake zooming
btw, the zooming with the two fingers is not really true, they are faking it by sliding only one finger and fixing the other, as far as i know, it needs hardware support that is not available on phones other than the iphone.
I'm not sure if our HTC phones can handle this, especially without driver support .

I agree with that. Doesn't the iphone have something like a multi-touchscreen? I don't think that HTC devices have something similar. But wait... what about the Touch
The picture zooming thing can be done just as effectively with Eye-Photo and is it me or does the theme selection stuff look very like A_C's configuration for S2U

From their website:
At a very low level the multiple touches of a normal touch screen device (i.e. not the iPhone) are masked. Our development team thinks we can make inferences from the data and simulate multi-touch.

That is for their iZoom app. I assume they use that with iSwish. Who knows how effective it is.
I have sign up for the beta. We'll see the truth soon enough.
I just signed up too, i been using Ifonz for last few weeks, and that is rather good, if you have good skins and stuff for programs installed. this should be even betterstill.

lol theres nothing apple can really bust them for, I'd like to see them try and say that they stole Multitouch from them (enough of the people out there believe apple invented multitouch ((or touchscreens)) anyway).

It bugs me that every theme has something that another doesnt, so it makes it hard to decide. this is cool, I like the wiggly effect. Is this gonna cost money? A neat program.

Very interesting!!!
I have seen this a long time ago and it really does not interest me. It does not really look like the IPhone interface nor act like it. Sure it has some of the same features; however, there are many PPC apps out there that are far superior and many of the cool IPhone features can be found on seperate PPC Apps - Such as AC's S2 apps. Personally I prefer ultimate launch and use IPhone icons on one of my pages - I was able to make one page look like the IPhone however, can switch to my htc home - Weather panel plugin, Calendar and appointments plugin. I love this setup much better then any IPhone setup. The Iphone setup is too confining - stuck with one look - (Besides changing themes) - My setup - I have five completely different and unique pages all with their own plugins and shortcuts and different style icons and at a glance information / data using the various plugins installed on these pages.
The features - multi touch - Not available on any PPC yet - Possibly on some of the new ones to be released with WM7 I have been told.
My favorite thing about the IPhone is the size of the screen and that can not be duplicated using software. I am waiting for a WM PPC to come out with a large screen like the IPhones - Hopefully with Multi - touch capabilities (Because I want this too)

[APP] Home app "Strike Menu"

I Think its a great Applikation, so look here:
http://www.inside-handy.de/news/14601.html
look at the Video
What u Think?
what do i think..
useless, exactly as 7/8 of htc stuff, imo.
We can make better things with homescreen plus plus and mortscript, imo.
Strange use of colours. Too little data for a 4.1 inch WVGA screen. Most importantly, it lacks class, due to it's colours.
What I think?
Good idea -launcher wise. Lacks userfriendlyness when it cant display a calendar and clock simultaniously. But I dont think that colors equals less class as posted above.
I don't like it and my WAD setup is way beound that..
Go WAD! ;-)
The colors makes it the wierdest setup I have ever seen (who ever thought that looks slick?). The design is simple. It can and most likely, will be emulated by the superior wisbar advance desktop.
I did like the dialer. Hopefully a little more effort can be used in this GUI. Until then its WAD for me.
oi. this looks horrible.
not my type of display colors
They are tying to be all touchy feely a-la-Iphone. Not bad specs though. UI is alright, nothing special though when you have that much horsepower running the hardware.
UI is ok and at least customizable compared to TF3D.
But I fear they could miss improving things like start menu, system status menu...etc like HTC did. Those things are extremly useful and Toshiba should provide something similar or release an update to 6.5 short after it is available (in fact: summer for OEMs).

Is the SE Xperia really that bad ?

I'm considering buying an Xperia, mostly because it is much cheaper than HTC Touch HD (I'd love to have this device). But after reading diverse reviews on the Internet, I found a lot of complaints about the performance of the device (too slow,..), on the whole the review make a negative impression on me
Apparently this is just a software/firmware issue, which should be fixed with a new firmware upgrade. But what worries me most is Sony Ericsson might not ever bother to bring a new upgrade, or they will do but eventually discontinue support for the device and switch to Android, because Windows Mobile was probably a failed start for them.
Nevertheless it is very likely that I will buy the device because I know there is site on the Internet which calls xda-developers . So I am looking forward to hearing your opinions to make my ultimate decision
SE has already released upgraded firmware and from my experience I have to say the phone is quick... very quick... I have had it for about 4 or 5 months now and it goes from strength to strength... the only down side I would say is the keyboard, its different from my Kaiser/TyTN II but I am getting used to it and its working out... GPS is very fast at getting a fix (sooo much faster than my old phone its like a biplane vs a modern jet fighter) and the internet is awesome... so over all thumbs up from me, however I bet you will find negative and positive reviews... depends on the person using it and the reason they are using it I guess...
I have been owner of the X1 for about 6 weeks now and I am very satisfied. Of course, as any other device, it has some problems. This is what I don't like about it:
-Camera takes too long to capture, images get blurry if you can't hold the phone without ANY shaking (Camera Button is hard to press, which makes this difficult)
-Panel performance is poor
-Original audio recorder was removed, I believe, There is, however, a way to record with the built-in software: As a Voicenote. But you won't get a WAVE file or anything like this with it.
I've installed a lot of software meanwhile and BASICALLY performance is very well. The display may take some time to rotate when you slide it open. The biggest problem is, from my point of view, that, when you are answering a text message, it lags and you accidentally send an empty message. So you hit the Reply-Button with your finger, phone doesn't react immediately, so you think it didn't get it and you touch again, and it activates the Send-Button which will come in place of the Reply button, so you send an empty message. This has happened twice to me so far (I've sent about 100 msgs).
No other performance issues.
I can really recommend the phone. Features are fantastic and very well worth the price... This device is next-gen, a piece of future.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, it has no Ctrl-Key on the Slideout Keyboard. That's bad.
EDIT2: And just to convince you, I have running WMWIFIRouter on my X1. My phone provides me with WLAN through 3 walls over a distance of about 20 meters. Signal Quality on the Notebook is at about 40%. Isn't this crazy?
Thanks for your quick replies.
I'm a heavy "business user" although I'm still a student , it literally means that I've been using windows mobile devices only for its business functions (calendar, task, note, email, web...) and never care about other multimedia features.
The main reason for which I wanted to switch to Xperia (from HTC Touch) is its high resolution screen, still the screen seems to be relative small (3 inch), in comparison to HTC TOUCH HD.
I use smartphone to read ebook quite often, since HTC Touch HD and Xperia share the same resolution, does it really mean that Xperia can display the same amount of content as the HD does ? Or with the same content we will barely see anything on the Xperia because the screen is too small ? In case of an ebook, does it mean that the Xperia can display the same amount of words on the screen as the HD does and the page on Xperia is still readable ?
And what about those cracks, they look scared, I've just found several auctions on Ebay from people selling their cracked Xperia ...
I've just "accidentally" won a 1 month old Xperia on Ebay for only 300euro. Nevertheless I'm still waiting for your diverse opinions Just in the worst case I can resell it and save money for other device
Truth be told, I really want to keep this device ... waiting for positive reviews
I use my phone for reading all the time... usually for about 4 or more hours a day... in English and Chinese and its simply brilliant... clear and crisp... I was originally worried about the clarity, especially for the Chinese but find its just that good I am very pleased... as for cracks... I have not yet experienced this and from the various polls on this board it looks like it might be a minority from a particular colour (silver) and a particular batch... I have even dropped my phone a few times (each time filling my shorts that I had ruined my phone) but so far (touch wood) its still good...

Dont think this is limited to specific batches,
im on my 3rd device from a third batch (week 52 this time)
I now have 2 cracks, one on the silver trim and one near the volume button - this appears to be the common one...
dont get me wrong, it's a good phone, but I would suggest this is not just limited to one batch.

Fairplay... I am just glad that mine is not one of them...
Any idea how these cracks could ever happened It is not from the manufacturing obviously but rather the cracks develop over time ... The reason might be the metal case getting bigger due to temparature , thus crack the plastic ones ...
I always take good care of my phone or any electronic device in general, my HTC Touch still looks absolutely new after 1 year of usage, if I ever experience those crack with the Xperia (hopefully not) then I'm going mad !!
xperia is not bad just not worth the high price. if your going to do a lot of reading and not in the u.s, go for the bigger screen hd.

yes i agree with that, get a hd it's much better for your needs, the screen is so tiny in xperia you will regret later belive me.
Okay, HD and X1 share the same number of pixels. But X1 has smaller screen. So the conclusion is you will see the same amount of information on both devices. However, things will appear bigger on the HD - but sharper on the X1. For reading ebooks, the HD is probably the better choice. It depens on whetehr you are interested in a slide-out keyboard. I think that's quite useful for "heavy business users". And on the space in your pocket BTW I have no Cracks at all.

Ok, I dont mind if things are smaller on the X1 as long as they are still readable. I've never used a device with a keyboard before but I'm getting annoyed with the on screen keyboard of my current device, so a slide-out keyboard must be a plus.
On my opinion, the bigger screen of the HD is good for people who want to use it like an Iphone with their fingers. I'm happy with the stylus, so I think I will go for the X1
the firmware updates for the X1 are making the Xperia better and better (and more like the kickass phone it was supposed to be - check out the R3AA rom extracts under the TOuch-IT 4.5 rom thread!). Yes the screen is tiny, but the new Panels coming out + dedicated ppl like itje making custom firmwares makes this phone worthwhile
remember people tend to post on forums when theyre unhappy about something so theres goin to be a lot of negative comments and not as many positive ones to counteract them. as to the screen size, i use the built in opera browser to surf the Three website and everything is nice and readable. id imagine an ebook or pdf would be just as legible. and if you use it in landscape mode then the screen isnt much shorter than the average paperback book page. the X1 has the extra advantage of the optical mouse which would be quite handy for scrolling through pages. id recommend turning down the sensitivity one notch though.
i think my main recommendation is to not be too disappointed at first, theres so much software available to tweak and improve it so consider it a blank canvas. i wasnt too impressed when i got mine but now ive had a chance to customise it im much happier. everyday i find at least one new cool program to add
Xperia is practically same hardware as recent HTCs. It has same speed issues as HTC and vice versa.
If you want keyboard, I think Xperia is better then Touch Pro because it has 3.5mm jack.
If you don't want keyboard, I think HD is better because of the display.
Touchlo is good system, better then panels (IMHO), but it can be ported to Xperia, and many people does not use it even on HTC.
I say wait .. in a year there will be new WM, new faster devices, new Palm, and new iPhone maybe too.

My personal opinion for the regular crack near the volume buttons, is that this is caused by stress from the battery cover / removing the battery cover. anyone with that crack, push down on the nearest corner of the cover to the crack, the crack gets smaller.

28% for X1 is really great
i think the X1 is a great device, it has alot of plusses, some minuses.
mainly, it's not a multimedia device so don't expect much on graphics (although they work perfectly, but you can expect some problems from time to time). all other features are great, panels are good.
i have been using it for about 4 months, i bought it for 1000$, and i would say if time goes back, i WILL buy it again
previosly i have been using P910 & P1, they are both good, X1 is the best so far.
SE are really supporting the device, releasing updates, fixing problems.
the device came with R1A ROM, 3 months later R2AA08 was released, then they fixed some other things and released R2AA10 few weeks after.
i think SE are doing a great job supporting the device, they are doing their best to keep us happy, and most of us are.
the only problem of Windows Mobile is that it has lots of configuration and tweeks, install the wrong one or modify something wrong in the registery and you have to make a hard reset.
i LOVE my SE X1, and usually i have alot of arguments with friends who use iphone and it mostly ends with them hating their phones
hope i helped.

Windows 7 working prototype...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9F4QJK1wFs
looks "basic" slow and pretty sh**ty after all this wait....
'working prototype'. That's a little troubling for me. It's going to be released in ~8 months. It should be close to a 'release candidate' instead of 'prototype'..
i wouldn't worry yourself.... its not even going to be worth installing !
Are we still able to use the standard WM theme ?
I don't want all them icons !
OMG. why when i see the main screen - i feel like throwing up? so much unused space, azure color, the wasted space on the right - feels like the screen is not properly aligned... If you are out of good ideas for the design - why not make a Win7 theme with the aero. make buttons have more aero feel, not this bs...
P.S. IMHO, for it to succeed they will have to redo the design and make it highly customized.
P.P.S. Did you know big dev companies are already dropping win 6.5? example - Skype, Adobe...... I hope WinMo7 burns in hell
I wouldn't complain about speed at this point; look more at the functionality and what it does rather than the speed of the transitions, time it takes to respond to touch etc. Those are all tweaks that can be done closer to RTM.
I'm still expecting them to include some kind of background on the start screen, since that full black background is just odd.
As much as some people here are complaining, MS has really placed a lot of emphasis on UI study the last few years and designing crazy yet efficient UIs around them. See Office 2007, 7bar, etc.
I think if they let you skin that start screen background, it'll be much more tolerable.
The rest of the UI is pretty sharp IMO.
Of course, if MS doesn't allow it, the clever folks @ xda will make it so anyways.
I thought they are not making a version for the HTC HD2? They officially will not make windows 7 for the HD2 as it has more than 3 buttons :S wtf
I like the demo phone, it's slick, wonder how the back look like.

Im also not very found with bing, but i'm not gonna go to conclusions yet - lets wait for the MIX event. But the spacing is just ridiculous - 20-25% of the screen at the top is filled with the word "PEOPLE" "GAMES"..... - personally i can't find a logical explanation.
Lock's to me like WM 7 has to be compleate rebuild by xda-members before we can think about to use it. Dont like what I see...
Microsoft should be carefull with their WM devlopment since they already have lose alot of the marked, it's short way to miss the rest of it.
The only thing I don't like is the start screen. if you could skin it with sense I am sold. or customize it to give me what sense gives me I am sold.
what is the screen size of this prototype and what may be its processor
can the design be any worse? I mean hardware and software are disgusting

HTC HD mini T5555

I am not sure that this is the most suitable forum to discuss my issue, but I do think that it doesn't really matter.
The HTC HD mini is indeed a new phone - BUT SHOULD GET ATTENTION AS THE OTHER SMARTPHONES.
There are no applications/games/whatever that are suitable to this small great phone.
The problem (according to my non-professional view) is the small screen.
I am sure that an easy application would addapt the screen to all WM6.5/HD2 applications.
Can someone take an action?
Please - all other HD mini users - say your thing!!!
YL
Maybe if there's enough users, sort "critical mass", then developments will fire up.
It's like the treo pros and i780s. They were quite popular when they came out. But soon, very soon, better phones came quickly. Thus for the low number of SQVGA apps and themes. It's the same for the HD mini. Why get a HD mini when you can get a HD2? The HD mini is probably going to be forgotten soon.
firetiger you are totaly wrong.
The HD2 has about the same properties as the mini. The mini is (!!) just smaller. It is the only smartphone (with touchscreen) that feets to your pocket!
Again, I am sure that there is a simple way to re-define the screen of the mini to make it work like his bigger brother.
I think bart3385 is right - like I said - HTC mini owners should rise their voice.
Or maybe HTC should work on it.....
The HD mini has an odd screen resolution (in fact it seems to be the only phone with that screen size... HVGA is a stupid res between QVGA and VGA)... This alone makes it a poor device. Every informed user should have known it was a bad product before they bought it.
I have a Samsung Omnia (WQVGA... was kind of popular in France if I got my facts right) and in the beginning I found that despite the screen being similar to regular QVGA (with just an extra 80px in height) a few apps didn't work (WVGAFIX came to the rescue later). Of course with the HD mini it's much worse... Its screen size is just a dumb move (HTC should have gone with a more standard res like VGA but once again they left the users to pay for their poor judgement).
Many (if not most) WinMo apps are designed for specific resolutions and don't dynamically scale... That's why so little apps work in your device. Seeing the ever decreasing popularity of the OS, the verge of WP7, the fact that this is the only phone with this screen res and the not so high popularity of the device I'd say there's not much hope... It's like asking for every app to be rewritten for the sake of one phone in a phasing-out OS... Sorry pal.
I don't think that a WVGAFIX approach would be as easy for this phone but it could be the best option (scaling your screen to WQVGA or QVGA...). I seriously don't believe that HTC will provide such a solution (so your only hope is once again xda)... But for the foreseeable future it seems like your limited to whatever comes in the phone and the few 3rd party apps that work.
HD mini has a better size, while maintaining a good enough screen size. And it's easier on the pocket, both physically and price-wise. It's got a very good, clean and simple physical design and back cover. The back cover material is ideal; add to it the exposed screws for an attractive industrial design. Its capacitive touch keys should last longer than the mechanical keys of HD2.
It would have been nice to give a VGA resolution to HD mini. But i guess the main point of a lower HVGA resolution is to allow the miserly 600mHz processor to keep up. For today's generation of smartphones, 600mHz is quite anemic. I'm guessing it could have a hard time if paired to higher resolutions.
For me, HVGA is not bad for this size of phone. Most apps will do fine. But I'm certainly not satisfied with the broken and severely restricted Sense UI that comes with it.
If we want restricted phones, we can easily go to Apple Store for an iPhone. The main point, or should i say, the love of sticking to WinMo is exactly its unrestricted flexibility OS. HTC missed this concept.
HTC, please fix your broken Sense. Make this phone what we all expected it to be.
So your reasoning is that the HD mini is a good phone because it's pretty and has a sensible size? I most agree with the latter (most new devices are gargantuan). Also real hw buttons is something not to be dissed. HTC phones were a lot better when they had their older circle/dpad button (at least they were a lot more functional... g-sensor and multitouch fall short as appropriate game control methods... not to mention HTC should have implemented a g-sensor d-pad emulator to increase usability of older apps).
The problem is not that the phone has a new screen size per se... It's the fact that having a non standard screen size introduces new problems and incompatibilities. As always the priorities were in the wrong place. VGA should have worked quite fine in a 600mhz cpu (older models worked fine in slower cpus).
If companies coded better they wouldn't need 1+Ghz cpus... Sense is a senseless waste of any phones resources for the sake of look n feel. By far not worth the resources it consumes. If it were a well coded C++ shell it'd be a good interface but since companies work in a cost effective manner they always prefer the easy and fast approach. That's how we end up with this sort of crapware (really a shell in Lua? that sucks even in the PSP homebrew scene!). Sensible resource usage trumps looks anyday in my book (hence why I already consider Windows Phone 7 a major fail... .NET and Silverlight... and it's not even pretty! Microsoft what the hell were you thinking!?).
My opinion is that it has good sensible size. But not necessarily good in every aspect. Like you, i have an axe to grind about the Sense UI. It's mostly broken, not thoroughly tested, not properly coded, and prioritizes eye-candy over real functionality. I'm also not happy about how HTC removed some of WM's core functions and replace them with their own broken software. HTC placed a lot of restrictions on this phone that is really pissing me off.
Hardware manuals/how to vids
Does anyone know where I can find a hardware manual or a "how to" vid on how to change the digitiser (zer for all you americans) on a HTC HD mini T5555?
I have the new parts and the tri-wing tool, just want to make sure I'm not breaking anything when going into it.
Cheers
