No video call button X1a - XPERIA X1 General

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just received my X1a, I am with Rogers Wireless in Canada and get good 3G signal with my X1, but there is no video call option in phone menu. I have video calling plan and so does the other party. When I put my sim card into my old Kaiser, everything works well. Anybody has any suggestions what the problem might be? My rom version is 1.02.948.8, radio is 1.06.25.24U
Thanks in advance

I'm sure this is a reg hack that will open this up.

Does Rogers have full 3G? They might have kept video call out of the X1a considering no North American carriers have the entire 3G network capabilities yet. AT&t is getting there, supposed to launch within a couple months.

the x1a has the front facing camera so I'm sure you CAN enable this somehow on the device.

Video calling enabled
Hi, I have an X1a here in Australia. It works just fine - except that the video window is too small to be useful. I am on the Telstra NextG network (850Mhz). I have a previous post asking how to increase the video window display size, but no respondants yet? Can anyone help>?
Cheers,
Peter

This is already being dscussed in other thread
Video-call is a missing feature only in the NAM ROM (northamerica ROM)
Everybody else has video-call in the dialpal, even th LAM ROM (latinamerica ROM) has videocall
Nobody has prepared or extracted a CAB file yet, thus, if you want videocall you can flash the UK ROM. I have tested the X1i UK ROM myself on X1a and eveything worked fine, AND the dialpad incuded the video-call button and settings
Beware: yes the dialpad had video-call, but I didn't make any "actual" test call

I thought that the X1a did not have the camera on the front (one side of the earpiece) and so because of this video calling was not possible???

Video Teleconferencing on Cingular UMTS

After reading all the posts about this particular topic. Well I work as an authorized agent for Cingular and made a call to the network engineer for Central Florida. After talking with him about UMTS I asked about Cingular's UMTS network and video teleconferencing. His response was that Cingular's UMTS network is currently capable of video teleconferencing and explained to me that during one of the training courses they brought in the Ericsson team that is responsible for the UMTS network build out and they were performing video teleconferencing on Cingular's UMTS. He said that the only caveat was that both people on the call have to have phones that support video teleconferencing.
I dont think that's true .. Cingular doesnt support video conferencing right now .. from what folks have said .. it wont until HSUPA as the upload speeds are very less right now ..

It may be. I just got my info from a Cingular Network Engineer and the lead on the Ericsson team that is upgrading the network. According to them they are launching UMTS and HSPDA at the same time, verified by and article in RCR wireless news.
As I was waiting for a flight from PBI, I sat next a network engineer from Cingular, besides disscussing how the network is configured and stuff like that, he mentioned that my TyTN could video teleconference aslong as the person I am teleconferencing with also has a TyTN.
He played with my TyTN for a bit and was actually impressed at the speeds that I was getting from dslreports.
Dan
Alright then, lets try it. PM me with your phone number or however you want to do it and we can give it a try. I want to know if its the network or just 8525 that does not support it.
Later, Lew
The 3G network on Cingular is definitely HSPDA (at least in my area). I also can say that videoconferencing is something Cingular definitely will roll out. I assume the reason they didn't put the front cam on the 8525 is because they didn't want customers asking questions about a service that was not yet implemented (even if it is already possible).
I'm using the original shipping 8525 rom on my Hermes. Is there a different Rom that would support the videoconferencing, even if I have to use the regular camera on the backside of the phone?

The Cingular branded 8525 HERM100 does not support video conferencing as it lacks the camera and possible the software required to run it.
The TyTN does support video conferencing as it has both the camera and software needed to run it.
Dan
I just tried it with a guy that PMed me and it failed instatnly, just as I though t it would. We both have TyTNs.

Don't know if it's the same in US, but in Australia you have to have Video Confrencing enabled on your mobile account (Vodafone doesn't by default). Until I had our Vodafone rep do this we couldn't connect any video calls, once done we could.
Cingular's network is HSDPA out of the gates. That being said, I believe that you also need central switching gear to connect the calls as I don't believe its peer-peer.

No Video Calls with Trinity?

I have a Trinity and my phone provider is vodafone Germany. I tried everything to get a Video call to work but it just doesn't work. I have the 3g symbol on the display all the time and I live in Cologne which has UMTS everywhere. But if I call a number (my wifes number same provider and standing next to me so she has UMTS too) it seems as it should be ringing at the other end but it doesn't even ring there ...
Did anyone manage to make a video call with the trinity?
I HAVE THE SAME problem... I was thinking was signal problem.... but....
btw I can't send and receive mms too )))
Video Call and MMS works on mine =)

I couldnt send mms too. so i completely resetted (hard reset) and followed the vodafone mms instructions. Now it works. But still no video call.
Still no video calls on german vodafone?
so no one has managed to make a video call with the trinity on vodafone germany?
Today I made my first video call with T-Mobile Netherlands, so it does work.
still no video calls
I tried with my trinity with several vodafone germany cards and it does not work. It seems my device is defective.
Tried it last week with a video-call to my brother (he using a SE K800i on Orange), and it seems to work great Had to change the dial-pad back to the default HTC one though, cause the M$ one doesn't show the buttons to initiate a video-call
i have made a videocall with t-mobile nl, but the other person did not see me.. i could see him on my screen., and myself in the lower corner. And no, we were not filming eachother. ;-)
what about that ? we both were on umts network, standing next to eachother.
is it something on my phone i forgot to turn on ?
i have a orange spv m700, (yes officially unlocked, thnx to the nice man in the orange shop!)
he has a nokia N73
It seems the Vodafone network in germany does not "see" that my trinity is on UMTS. If I try to use Vodafone TV it says that I am currently not on UMTS which I am.... very strange... any help is much appreciated
I am having the same problem with Telsra in Australia. I have the 3G symbol, the service says it is on UMTS Telstra, can browse the net with HSDPA, everything else seems fine.
Maybe a lame question, but you have the video call service enabled by your operator/contract? Maybe you require some settings on the phone to be recognized as video call enabled/ to operate on the network?
MMS
I can not send MMS too. It drives me really crazy!!!
I have a dutch KPN provider

Since no one has answered this question yet: Yes, it works, albeit not to my satisfaction.
I'm using a Vodafone compact GPS (which should be identical to the HTC 3600=Trinity) on Vodafone Germany on the other (dark) side of the Rhine with good UMTS coverage (at least two bars). When phoning to, say, a Samsung UMTS mobile phone, I receive good picture quality and reasonable sound quality. However, the other side fails to receive decent sound; what is arriving there is regularly sort of "chopped" and hardly understandable. I'm not sure about the reason for this, but I suspect that it is my "Trinity" that is misbehaving (too slow? inadequate configuration settings?), as the Samsung's video arrives nicely and has good quality. It could also be the other way, of course, or it could be a Vodafone network problem.
Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with the video call quality on the Trinity?
PS: Hello to everybody, I'm new to this forum, and I apologise for any misbehaviour in advance as it is not intended , and yes, I have used the "search" option .

A hard reset involves deleting all data, right? I'm not looking forward to configuring the ppc again, really. But I guess it's worth a try, as the AEG-principle hardly ever fails...

Hi Elfriede. Welcome to the forum. Case you are german (der Name klingt danach) try this forum too: http://www.ppc-welt.info/community/forumdisplay.php?f=174
I sold my P3600 which I had bought from amazon just for the not working video calls. I then bought a Vodafone compact GPS... guess what... the video calls didn't work too. The guys at vodafone (which I had phoned 10 times for this problem and which had told me it must be my p3600's fault) just forgot to switch UMTS on!!! Now it works (I lost a few 100 € just because of vodafone-no-competence-service...)

Enable video calls - Cingular 8525

Hi,
I've bougth unlocked Cingular 8525 and connected it to My local operator which support Video calls.
There is any option to enable video calls? (install tytn rom? or some extended rom)
Thanks ahead,
Omri

I search for info about missing video calls on wiki and forums, only what i found on wiki is:
Is the Extended ROM a must, or can I live without it also ?
You can live without it, but generally it fixes some things (video calling, skins, keyboard, operator settings, etc...).

...nothing more in hermes section, on forums also nothing clear response usualy same problem without no response
I downloaded different skin phones including original htc tytn and in HTeakC i turned on phone skin. When i turn on thc tytn skin video button is on the same place what speed dial and that double button is flickering.
More: when some one is trying make video call to me phone goes out from sleep and..... nothing. Other person hears only signal of waiting....
I also didn't had smart dial, but that thx to wiki wasn't problem.
But I didn't made any hard reset. If I would have to probably i will go directly to wm6, soon there will be xda-live3
If you have a Cingular 8525 you DO NOT have video calling. The 8525 doesn't have the front camera that is needed for video calling. Sorry
I know that i dont have front camera
But i ask if i can add video call's feature so i'll be able to see the other side or use the back camera.
Thanks,
omri

Some of us are having this exact same problem after upgrading to the LVSW WM6 roms. Don't know why as some others with exactly the same setup are saying that they work fine!
I wonder if this could be network operator linked instead?

I've been working on this for sevral days and now I can finaly (and safely) share this with other users
First of all, thanks to jackleung for building the easy-to-install cabs required to do the trick
It is strongly recommended (but not absolutely necessary) to hard-reset your phone before installing this videocall app
Download links not available...
NOTICE 1: This will reinstall the Xperia X1 original Sony dialpad (just in case you have another dialpad skin installed). If you just want the original Xperia X1 dialpad back, then download the second cab only
NOTICE 2: The camera option comes disabled by default. Have to go to Phone dialer -> menu -> videocall settings and uncheck both "switch camera off" boxes
thanks.. ill download it when i get home.
hows this used? i mean does the other party i call have to have the same software to receive my video call.

Nope, just any videocall 3G enabled phone
So does this mean I can call someone from here using ATT to say England and video confrence. I ask this because I have the X1i, but every video call I make to my sis in England fails, plus she has a 3G video call phone.
Videocall is a "operator dependant" service
Ask your carrier/operator

Suggestions:
1- Saw my "settings" suggestions in the first post ?? Check again !! (dunno why but cam is disabled by default)
2- Are you picking "H" or at least "3G" signal icon ??
3- Does your operator offer videocall service ??
What I did: I went to a service centre and stated "I wanna test videocall", a guy came up with a Nokia phone (3G with front camera of course) and we made some test calls (neat!).
Since then I started videocalling some friends and works a treat.
Videocall rulez !! (unless you don't want them to actualy know where you are but that's another story LOL)
1. I have the camera enabled
2. Yes i had an H
3. This the one i wanna say no to.... I don't think ATT has video calling enabled or something. What service are you using?

Very interesting work from both yourself and JL
Crunch point, however:
1) we know the X1i cannot connect to UMTS 850Mhz as a deliberate hardware strategy. We know the X1a can
2) we know the X1i can connect to UMTS 2100Mhz as HSDPA in most major city areas (I have personally tested this with my X1i in Sydney)
3) so can an X1i on the 2100Mhz band video-call an X1a on the 850Mhz band ? (or any other device on the 850Mhz band, for that matter) ... and vice-versa, of course ?

I live in Latinamerica, not Northamerica
3G begun widespreading thruout latinamerica since 2006 (ref 1)
Even Bellsouth provides 3G services to at least 9 latam countries (ref 2)
I think 3G is only abscent in Bolivia, Cuba, Guayana, Surinam and Haiti...
That's why Sony Ericsson did put the videocalling dialpad on the X1A LAM ROM (latinamerica, spanish)
I realy don't understand why the heck nobody has deployed a full 3G network with videocall etc in the USA (national security issues ??). It is a common feature (dou it will never replace a standard voice call, expensive and fancy) around the globe (Europe, Asia, Latinamerica, Africa...)

Are you able to answer my post 3 above, please ?
I was in BA (Argentina) about 5 days ago using an HTC Polaris, which is tri-band UMTS. I was able to connect to H on either 850Mhz or 2100Mhz, so I am interested in whether the X1i on only 2100Mhz can video-call a device on the 850Mhz frequency

Frequencies have nothing to do here. I can make a cell phone call from my 850MHz operator to any operator regarding their transmitting frequency band (that's "interconnectivity"). Same applies for videocall
That's absolutely operator dependant.
Your operator can choose wether to let you videocall other operators phones or not...
Eg.: My operator let me make videocall to same-carrier phones only (even when there are 3operators offering videocall right now in my area...)
Other carriers (as in some european countries) will let you videocall any number from any company
Installed great. Sadly I have to wait for AT&T to use it.

Thanks. That's what I had expected, but as almost no-one I know uses these calls anyway, I had no way of testing it.
BTW, the Sonystyle Centre in BA quoted a retail price of almost USD$1700 for an X1a (they had no stock anyway) - this is about 2x the X1i price in the EU ... quoted Aus price is about the same (again, almost no stock anywhere).

I read somewhere recently that AT&T is nearing the full capabilities of 3G and video calling will be available, possibly within the next 3 months or so.
http://www.cellfanatic.com/2008/05/24/att-video-calls-thanks-to-hspa-rollout
Had to ruffle through the "Video Share" articles to find it, eww.
so seeing that I have the x1a in the united states using at&t I'm not going to be able to use videocall until at&t supports it? And is that going to be an extra charge per month or what?
If so...I will never use it seeing as that I know of absolutely no one that has video call which is thoroughly disappointing.

Someone in US Video call me. I wanna test!

Can someone who lives in the US with AT&T and has the video call working with their rom help me out? I wanna test the video call feature...

either flash the UK R2A ROM or use gtrabs 2 cab files and SIIIIMPLE instructions to get it... it SHOULD work.. i just wanna make sure
I beleive AT&T only supports video sharing which is different than video calling plus you need to have video sharing on your account with at&t as it will be blocked if you dont but dont think thats gonna matter anyway when its not video calling. Hopfully at&t will jump on the video calling wagon soon! I visited my family in britan this past summer and even my cousins piece of dump flip phone had video calling! Come on USA...
before i flashed the UK rom, my NAM rom said "this feature is not supported" when i tried to video call...
Now with the UK rom, it doesn't, but i don't have anyone to try with... well, until like tomorrow or friday... it SHOULD work... all you need is a 3G connection which i do have, otherwise it'll say "you do not have a 3G connection" and will offer to make a voice call
I remember my old imate 9502 had video out of the box and when I was in a 3g area, the video call icon would light up because it detected 3g. I tried to video with a friend and it always failed to connect on a 3g network using at&t and that was because at&t did NOT open ports for this to work properly as far as I know. Please, someone prove me wrong because that would make my 2009!
I will find out either tonight or in the next few days... i'll keep u posted man... this would def be ground breaking for the US
Sounds good.
