Xperia GPS malfunction - XPERIA X1 General

Hi
I wonder if someone has this same problem and know how to solve it...
Most of the times that i try to use tomtom or wayfinder, the gps can't get a fix, it locks on to the satelites with no problem, but only for 1/2 seconds, then loses the position and after some 10s it regains the position again for another 1/2s and loses it again...
The only i way can get the gps to function properly again is by turning the phone off, remove the battery and turn it back on. Then it works, but if i turn off tomtom and try to use wayfinder the problem returns, and sometimes also happens after i close tomtom and try to use it again later...
It's driving me nuts i did a hard reset and after instaling my programs the problem remains. It seems google maps works ok, tho i'm not sure as the program doesn't have the option to see to how many satelites it's locked on.
any ideas? I doubt it's from the programs i install cause the ones i use i dw them all from this forum...
Thanks

its probably your location, the satellites might not be abundant enough. GPS works fine for me, I'm using IGO8.

no, it's not that, cause when it happens i remove the battery and reinsert and turn on the phone again, and after doing that procedure the gps will lock with some 6/7 satellites and will not fail as long as i don't turn off the first program i try to use the gps with ...
If i use tomtom after doing that battery removal procedure, it will work flawlessly, if i turn off tomtom and use it right after, it still works ok, but, if i turn off tomtom and after i use wayfinder, or if i only use tomtom again after some hours, it will have that problem (and vice-versa), it does find the same satellites and gets the coordinates (in tomtom they get those blue level bars), but only for very brief moments every 10/15s which ofc makes it impossible to correctly use the navigation program
If the gps was broken or something it wouldn't work ok after i removed the battery... i guess i'll try another hard reset

Try to disable A-GPS.

possible corrupt quick gps file , run quick gps and downoad new file.

Hi,
If you have used Advanced Config and enabled A-GPS, disable it as it will cause issues with TomTom and other GPS navigation software.
Later...

hehe got it working now, i had tried that before, but seems i was using an older version of advanced config or something, i downloaded a new version, disabled a-gps and now the gps is working fine thanks for the help

Re elusivo
Elusivo, could post how you fixed your problem? Because I currently have the same problem, but no Idea how to fix it. You said something about using a new configuration with and old one? Can you please explain?

Search for the program 'Advanced Config' on the forum and install it and then run it. Go to the GPS section and if A-GPS is enabled disable it. A-GPS uses the phone masts to triangulate and get your position which causes havoc when you are trying to use the internal GPS

Thanks for that......Problem solved

hello
I do have the saame issue as you with my gps. I install Igo, tomtom, gps htc tools and gps skinner and it is always 20/30sec to get a fix but it loses it 1 sec after.
If I disable A-Gps, it will increase the time to fix satellites or is it just used for quiick gps to download ephemerids???.
I think we have to ask Customer support because it is unacceptable for such an ewxpensive phone to have to disable functionalities such as A-gps to get it to work

A-GPS uses Cell Towers to guess where you are. It is not (on these phones anyway) linked to Quick GPS which is a lot better at getting you a fix on a cold start.
As others have mentioned for some reason with A-GPS enabled TomTom doesn't like it, and I don't know of any real reason to use it.

@artesea : I don't get why you said "I don't know of any real reason to use it".
Are you talking about Tomtom or about A-GPS function ??
Because if you are speaking about Tomtom, I do have similar problem with all software using GPS.
And if you disable A-GPS function you are going to have to wait may be 3 minutes or more to get a fix instead of 40seconds so I think this is a real reason to use it...

No I'm talking about A-GPS.
Have you tried a cold start using Quick GPS, I can get a location in under 30 seconds.

So I disable A-GPS and I got fix within 30/40 seconds and I never lost it.
I just think it is absolutely unbearable to have to disable A-GPS to get your GPS working properly. This mobile phone cost 700€
I just would like to know what is protocol version from people who can have A-GPS working properly.
Rom version : 1.02.933.3
Radio version : 52.43.25.24W

So you've gone from 20/30 seconds to get a fix but then it drops, to 30/40 seconds to get a fix and it work and you STILL have a problem???
Maybe there is a reason why A-GPS is disabled by default!

No when I disable A-GPS I don't have problem any more.
I just remembered that I may have enable A-GPS through Advanced Config.
Hard reset do not change this, I though it was a registry editor value but apparently it is more than that.
Anyway it is not Xperia X1 issue but Advanced Config compatibility with Xperia X1

having problems with gps now too :/ later it was working brilliant (fix in no time), but now, most of the time i dont even see any satellite...
but sometimes, especially after reset, it shows like 5-6 satellites, but cant get fix, after some time sats just disappear :X tried disabling/enabling a-gps, with/without quick gps file downloaded, still the same... and no answer anywhere...
i guess i'll have to use my warranty and get it serviced :/
edit: today reflashed radio one more time (as yesterday after like 5 radio flashes, i ended on the original version, not the newest one) and suddenly gps is working hope it lasts...

my ameo's gps cant fix satellites

My ameo can fix satellites the first day i got in chicago, but from the second day, it no longer fix. it has been so for 1 week.
i use "quick gps" but the gps still doesn't work. then I changed the server where "packedEphemeris.ee" downloaded from by editing the registry, nothing changed. I've used igo,gps viewer, gps tuner etc., the satellite can be displayed around the picture of earth but they are all red and never become blue or green. ive tried hard reset but nothing changed..
I wonder what's wrong with my ameo? Is it possible that my ameo's gps module is broken? or it's just a software issue?

I have read here somewhere that the GPS Now causes problems with the GPS and caused some lock-ups requiring a soft reset. See if you can find the thread....(hint....search...LOL ) that discusses it. I had also heard that the Ameo had a GPS problem.....that thread is here too.....good luck.
Hope this helps...........Later

i have done soft reset many times and hard reset for several times, nothing changed..i have tried setting the gps program port to com4 or com5 and just like what i did when the gps works fine. The applications can connect to the port and find the gps but it just cant fix a usable signal..
here is the screenshot
please help..
Try GPSView
I find that the best program for getting a lock, it normally works in a few seconds. Also, make sure when you turn it on you are in a WIDE open area. You need a good view of the sky in all directions to get initial lock. Wait until its happily locked onto 4 or 5 sats before fiddling or moving.
i have used gps viewer, and i do test it outdoor in open air, but it just cant get fix in hours.
here is the screenshot while using gps view
Not sure if it will work with your software, but I find that my Ameo is far happier using com1 for the GPS port - I believe this is the software port and com4 is hardware. With com1 I can use multiple gps apps at the same time, e.g. Tomtom and Reperion. If the device has not been used for a while, it can sometimes take a few minutes to get a lock, but no longer than 3-4mins. What I generally do is set one of the GPS apps running as I'm getting my keys coat on e.t.c., then by the time I've installed the Ameo in the car and done my 'preflight checks', its got a fix and I can go.
But deffo try com1 if you have that option.
cant download quick gps
hi can i get some help. i got my new ameo but cant seem to get the gps working. when i tap quickgps all that comes up is download and nothing happens. what might be the reason. do i need to get another gps programme installed?
Yes.
QuickGPS is only for downloading sat data, not for actual GPS tracking use!
GoogleMaps is free and quite good. Microsoft Live search same.
Look for GPSView for ppc as well...
Have fun.
how do you make googlemap work? i mean the track function.
Turn off the MS software GPS management, then get the ABSOLUTE LATEST googlemaps mobile.
I think you set the com port manualy in google, com4 or com5 9600
Its best to use the free GPSView to test out the com settings first to make sure you get the right ones. When you get the right port you will SEE the gps data appear in the text box proving its working. This program gets locks quicker too.
When youve got a lock with that, quit it, then run google and use the same com settings.

HP Ipaq 614 GPS don´t Work.

Hello!
I have a Ipaq 614C and I have a problem. When i install the TomTom i can't connect to the GPS. In the HP asset's it appear GPS: Present but in the status appear disable.
Anyone can help me.
Thanks.
John
Check in TOMTOM which GPS com port it's using. Then change to same port
as set in Settngs->Systems-> External GPS -> Programs com port.
I dont use Tomtom myself but I've used so far Google Maps and NAv4All and it works fine without any changes.
Good luck.
On my ipaq 614, the default com port for the gps is port number 6. And it works fine with that.
im also having some GPS difficulties with 614c: i already tried it with igo8, tomtom navigator and latest google maps. it finds satellites very slowly and rarely, mostly never. anyone got an idea?

Hi all, mine did not come with any quick GPS installed, the older (tomtom related) version from the 6915 does not work on that device any longer, where did you get quick gps? or is it hidden somewhere..? Since there is no navi software installed, only google maps..
txs
From my personal experience with it, it took absolutely FOREVER to connect to a satellite the very first time I tried. Took about 7 "cannot find a signal" messages before I finally snagged one.
After that, it was ~20 seconds to connect every time.
I really dont know what the deal was, but after that initial connection it seemed perfectly fine.
So my advice is, try again for a little while.
I also have problems with GPS on HP 614c. But the problem probably not in the chip, and in programs as Oziexplorer and Google Navigator satellites catch and precisely defines a site, and Navitel works through time and that in a minute satellites as though fade and data cease to be updated, Garmin in general satellites does not see. Firmware update has not helped. Anybody has ideas?
p.s. sorry for my english
With program Navitel has understood, the reason was in program MultyDID, it blocked access to keyboards and deformed a signal from satellites, Garmin does not function.

Hi
I've had the same problem with iGO8. You have to change the sys file in the iGO directory on the storage card. Here what I have there:

app="%SDCARD%/iGO8"

maxzoom2d=6000000
show_exit=1
[gps]
port=6
baud=57600

I agree with all these comments and the above regarding open space. GPS does indeed require a clear view of the sky... but one thing not so often said is that GPS needs a clear view of the NORTHERN sky... most of the GPS satellites are in a geostationary orbit above northern part of the planet.
To the guy who has tried leaving the phone on the balcony... I suspect your balcony is south facing (very nice).
I have also found that the longer it is since your last fix, the longer it will take to get a fix. GPS satellites only broadcast their "here I am" messages every 30 seconds and it is mostly down to luck whether your phone is listening for the right satellite at the right time. That's why it takes a while to obtain a GPS fix on all devices. QuickGPS and other software tries to expedite the fix by allowing the phone to calculate which satellites will be the right ones to listen out for, based on a daily positions log of the GPS satellites (called ephemera data).
GPS does work quite well on the 614c (I use tomtom 6.3 and Google Maps, both extensively)... but it does often take a long time to get a fix - sometimes even 10 minutes.

Very nice. I woud've never thought about that. However, i think geostationary orbit is when the satelite goes around the equator with the same angular speed as the rotation of the Earth. So these satelites actually go around in an orbit perpendecular to the equator. Yesterday i tested and got 2 satelites inside a room with north windows. Very cool. Do you use quick GPS. I installed it and downloaded the data for the next 7 days. I didn't notice any improvement. I use DESTINATOR 7 and Maspware GPSmeter 5.I don't really get it - who manages the data downloaded by Qgps - windows drivers or the gps software itself.
More GPS thoughts
Axlastro - the ephemeris data that QuickGPS and other programs download is nothing to do with Microsoft/Windows or with HP. It is official data on the positions and movements of the satellites in the GPS network. Provided ultimately by some government department, probably American.
If you have not noticed an improvement over a period of several days, I'm not sure why this is. This old posting might help you.
Ephemeris data is also actually transmitted by the satellites themselves. This is why, when you have recently had a fix, it is usually quite quick to get another one. Programs like QuickGPS are only therefore useful if it's been a while since your last fix.
Thanks. I googled the topic and got some detailed explanations.
http://wmexperts.com/articles/gps_vs_agps_a_quick_tutorial.html
I also found a thread that says that QUICKgps doesn't work with the ipaq.
http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16767
So that's why i don't see improvement. However neither of the people on that forum has managet to improve their fix times. Can you tell me wich program exactly you are using?
strange. i never had problems with gps. very fast . newest firmware from hp site ,and 3 different roms, original 6.0 and 2 roms with 6.1 . Igo,garmin etc.
Some more info
Really. Which program do you use, so i can try with it too.
I spoke to HP support and they said that it depends on the GPS software if it will use the aGPS function, so we have to check if the software we use is compatable with tha Qualcomm 6820 gps chipset of the ipaq.

Tomtom dropping GPS

Using TomTom v7.450 (build 9028) the device can work fine for hours, but sometimes I start Tomtom and it will find a GPS signal and then immediately drop it again.
When I look at the satellite information, it will do this...
1. No GPS device!
2. Poor signal, are you indoors?
3. Built-in GPS receiver
4. No GPS device!
5. Poor signal, are you indoors?
6. Built-in GPS receiver
7. No GPS device!
and repeat..

Hi, I've the same problem on my Blackstone, GPS works well for days bu from today the GPS signal result discontinuous with any navigation software like Tomtom(various versions), Trackypro and iGO8...any idea? Thanks
I had the similar problem when I first installed TomTom. Which settings are you using? Because I used "built-in GPS" for TomTom and had the above problem. When I changed it to "Other NMEA GPS" with baud rate at 11200 ()or whatever the max is + COM4 then gps started working like a charm. Since then no signal drops, no lag and very quick fix. Not sure if it is just by chance or is it a real fix for the above problem, but worth trying as its working for me. However, it has been 2 days only. Not sure if after a while I will have this problem or not. I am using Tom Tom 7.910 with maps 6.75.
Can You try to set the hardware port from <None> to COM9? Seems work better, the GPS signal still present...but for now I'm at home
I have more or less the same problem !
Using TomTom v7.450 (build 9028) the device works fine the 1st week, but now, I start Tomtom it xan't find GPS device !
I tried to reinstall all without success...
I also tried all the COM available !
using tomtom 7 with NMEA com 4 max baud rate. Works just fine. 8 or 9 sats locked on constantly in open areas
I'm having the same problem, although I don't have TomTom 7. But it doesn't seem to be just TomTom that's having trouble finding the GPS (and when it does, it'll never get a fix).
The Google Maps application also gives me the "No GPS found" attitude.
I've installed the HTC GPS Tool, which does seem to find a bunch of satellites, but they all stay no-fix-reddish.
Are there any guidelines on how to setup the GPS on this thing? I find it a bit strange that my settings menu only lists an option "External GPS", and no "Internal/Built-In GPS".
Can confirm that the dropping of GPS is in other applications.
I use zürich map from Lonely Planet (sure its form 2003) and it will drop the signal in the open.
Have a feeling its internal on our devices.
One possibility is A-GPS.
It is Disabled by default, but it is possible that with tools like HD Tweak or Advanced Config Tool, you, even by being unaware of it, you activated (or better : enabled) it.
To me, it was a winner : after re-disabling A-GPS, my GPS started to be stable again, no matter what port I choosed and how I configured the Navigator program.
Give it a try, could be the solution that works for you
Hi there,
I've just picked up my lovely HTC Touch HD - I'd like to buy the TomTom 7 and the correct maps to go with it to allow it to work.
Can someone please tell me where I can go to stick my Visa card details into and buy please! i'm pretty confused on the TT website and on here there's allsorts of version numbers etc mentioned!
I'd just like to have a stable running TT on my Touch!
Any chance of also having the US & Canada maps working as well as the UK maps ?
Thanks !
Dennis! West London UK!
This is not a TomTom issue. I have same problem with IGo and VisualGPSce.
I use to resolve this issue this way (in IGo or VisualGPS) : I change the baudrate in GPS configuration. Switching 19200 to 38400, or reverse, or whatever : the GPS locks and is stable after few baudrate switches.
Theres some reports that the default "sleep" timeout for GPS is 1 second. Apparently the Microsoft Intermediate Driver only updates every 1 second so it could just miss it and go to sleep!
Try changing registry entry to 2000 (milliseconds)...

Already did it (currently set to 2500). But changes nothing (even after soft reset) : GPS keeps deconnecting/reconnecting as described (not every time; one in a while..).
Thanks anyways !
Just out of interest, do you have MobileJustice installed by any chance?
Absolutly not. Nor any software of this type, nor any software who can possibly take GPS in background..
I had the problem of TomTom getting satelites and then dropping them and saying it couldn't find the gps.
Disabling agps (quick gps) via advance config seemed to sort out the problem
AGPS is *not* quickGPS in my understanding. But this is unclear. For a proof, AGPS comes disabled by default, but quickGPS works out of the box. Can someone who knows for sure, precisely state if AGS and quickGPS are the same thing or not ?
I have disabled AGPS also with HD tweak (but quickGPS stills work..), and I have regulary (2 out of 3 times) this problem.
I had the same problem. Disabling the AGPS seems to have worked but I will wait for the data to expire before confirming.
The problem seems to be when I have poor GPS reception AND poor GSM. They seem to be calling upon each other for corrections but never resolve.
If this is the solution I will just rely on QuickGPS alone which has worked fine for years with TTN6.
Edit: I can now confirm disabling AGPS solved my problem.
had TTN7 running for a few days now.
Can't find the built in GPS. Having to set it to other Bluetooth GPS Receiver.
A bit hit and miss with signal / getting a fix.
I have turned off AGPS as well. Going to try out some of the settings you all have put up tomorrow.

AGPS off - Using COM 4

GPS not working

At first gps worked fine with tomtom and g.maps.
The problem started when the gps signal became losted and recovered every second or so. On and Off continuosly.
Other days worked everything right. And now It seems that there is no gps at all.
Tomtom alert: "no gps device" and g.maps dont get any satelite
So, Is this a hardware problem?
Could you help?
Thanks
It sounds like the Assisted GPS problem, make sure its switched off.
Settings->System->AGPS Settings
Uncheck the box and save the settings
Steve
I dont have this option
About gps, I have only "External GPS" at "settings"
Another way to swicht it off?
you can use the Advanced Config Tool or Tweak HD
Steve
I get this too, so will see if turning off AGPS helps.
Another way I found is tha if I run Google Maps, wait for that to get a lock, anything else taht uses GPS then works fine.
I tried HD Tweak, and switched A-gps off (option 18.5)
But nothing changes
There is no gps available for gmaps and tomtom
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Problem solved, I was really , so:

Why is our Focus' GPS so slow???

Why is the Focus' gps so slow? I don't know what's wrong with my focus, I mean it just takes so long to get the coordinates of my location. I even have to go to a open sky area then wait for few minutes before it can successfully get my coordinates. Its just so annoying, this is a post ipad product, how come an ipad 1 can get my coordinates even inside the room without any difficulty?
Is this a hardware issue or just a firmware fix is due?
my focus gets a very quick lock about 90% of the time, every so often it will take a mintute or so to lock, but i've had this happen with pretty much every phone i've owned, so it seems about average to good for me...
the ipad1 (unless a 3g + wifi model) uses your network to locate you, which is why it's quite fast.
We have 2 Focuses, one AT&T and one Rogers. With both I get about the same time to get a fix, and that's slightly under a minute, in my location (several tall buildings near).
With what app do you check your GPS? I recommend GPS App
It's an AT&T. My ipad is a 3G+Wifi. It gets gps coordinates via gps chip and not A-gps. Most of the time the ipad gets coordinates very fast in span of 20-25 seconds, boom you know where you are in the map.
I am using the built in MAPS software to track my location. Does the software matters? I mean if the chip is really weak, what can the software do ?

Sometimes it does. To give you an example why: GPS without efemerides take several minutes to get a fix. GPS with efemerides take 20s to 1 min to get a fix. Efemerides are downloaded via software.
As for the app I found it to be good enough for testing the GPS part.
I can agree with you. Sometimes while driving if I take a different route than the one the phone provided for me, it will either fail to locate where I am for a few minutes or just fail completely.
I think it's time for a small update.
Is it just a minor driver issue? I hope so , otherwise, we have to live with it or change to another device.

Again, other people (including me) haven't experienced any issues.
In fact, it works great for me with Turn by Turn Navigation, even inside the car on the passenger seat (not near the windshield).
Try changing some GPS settings in the focus diagnosis app
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
what are the settings in GPS I have to adjust to make it perform beyond expectations? Which specific diagnostic option I have to tweak?
Did the OP ever find a solution to this? I'm having some slow locks and the occasional non lock.
I know in the diagnostic app you can get to the GPS with*#1575# but I'm unsure of what data can possibly be changed.
I'm having the same issue on my Focus (Rogers). It never connects to sattelite and always uses aGPS. It's very annoying. I tried many different gps apps and get the same behavior - very innacurate. Garmin allways says "Can't connect to sattelite", gMaps always shows cell tower icon. My phone is unlocked using original Chevron method (not Chevron labs). I also tired to change settings in *#1575# and turn ON/OFF TLS and GLONASS but nothing helps. Should I try hard reset?

I did a hard reset last night and it seems to have cleared up. I also installed this app, have to click the link in the post, searching for it didnt work.http://www.wpcentral.com/new-samsung-high-fidelity-position-enhances-gps-modifies-settings
Not sure if it's a placebo or not, but it seems to be working better.
is Focus GPS native chip or just a-gps?

Assisted GPS, which includes standard GPS in Standalone mode, so it's better than any native GPS.
after my hard reset the GPS locked much quicker for about a week, then it started acting up again.
my new solution seems to be much easier than a hard reset. Just briefly switch to airplane mode then re-enable your data and open maps up again. Been working great for me.
Faster solution that's been working for me. Turn on and off location services. My phone never locks without this, which is sorely annoying.
I had this problem on 7392 rom. After updating to mango 7720 and 8107, I get fix in 3 to 7 seconds in my room Tested with gpsinfo, it's real satellite data, not agps. I have also installed high fidelity position settings app. Don't know if it's helping.
