Theft Tracker? - G1 General

I almost got my phone stolen(some friend my friend is)and was wondering if there was a way to track my phone if it gets stolen. I paid $400 for my g1 and I don't want it stolen.

I know there are a number of different programs that can track the phones location and others can log online to a website and look at your current location. However, The GPS will need to be on and the program would need to be running. There are a few different programs, I tested out FirePin, it worked nice, but had no need for it and the online account was free.

I'd suggest PinTail from the market. You set up a pin code on the G1. When you want to locate it, you send a text message saying "locate <pin code>". The G1 gets your GPS location and texts back the coordinates and even a map link.

Just downloaded this app and its pretty cool and works very well... just have to make sure the other half doesn't get hold of the pin code! hehe

Also i Suggest adding That annoying LOCK screen to it... it saves wonders... Now if they only made a program you could set the default lock timeout.

not that this is a Pintail thread but I see how this could be useful but not great. If whoever has your phone has access to its menu they can change the pin which makes the application useless once your phone is gone.
just my 2 cents. If there was a way to lock out changing the pin, that would be useful, but on the same note it uninstalling this app should also require some sort of pw/pin

Could be pretty useful too if you loose the phone (Not actually theft)... Eg, I once left my mobile out at college and didn't realise... Sure it may not be accurate enough to know the exact room but it'd have stopped me spending so long searching around the house!

gps tracker on the andriod market works great and is the best

agrees gps tracker worked nice for me ... however there is no way to trigger the gps and initialize the tracking. i have my POWER MANAGER Set that way when my phone turns on, it gets plugged in or unplugged it turns on gps and cell location.
so depending on how prone u might b to loosing ur phone this is the best i would think. unless someone was familiar with android ... otherwise this method would have plenty of time to get coordinates

Is there a way to remotely turn GPS on? Like the "Force Ring" app changes ring volume to high when the phone is texted with a pin. Would be a nice app if you could remotely turn the lock screen on and turn GPS on by way of text. Anyone know if thats possible?

if the g1 had a built in battery with the screen lock enabled this could allow the owner of the phone to have time to track the phone. as soon as that phone is off and sim is removed, its gone...

BUG in HTC Password/Keylock Function, need advice on S2U2

I want to enable a password on my device (I already have the sim pin lock turned on) so if my THD is stolen someone cant remove the old sim and still gain access to my data, (8gb is a LOT of personal data).
When i go into the settings/lock and set it to 'ask a password' when the device goes on it seems to disable the ability to use the keylock function. It asks for a password at boot, but once its on if you try to do the long press of the end key, nothing happens (no matter how long you hold the END key for). It seems to be either.. Password protect at Startup OR the abitity to lock the keys while the phone is on. Has anyone found a work around, cos id love to be able to password protect it AND have the ability to use a keylock function because its a big touch screen and i dont really want my phone to start calling at random when its in my pocket.
Someone suggested using S2U2 as a keylock, is this gonna affect any Touch HD functions (iv heard it causes battery issues) cos i dont really wanna open a can of worms by installing software if its gonna cause problems, and can i use it with TF3D, Thanks.
using happily with touchflo3d myself. didnt notice any battery issues. but I set it to autolock when it comes out of standby so i don't really "use" it much. I guess you just try it by yourself and find if it suits your needs?
you can always uninstall
"Smart Protect" would be perfect for you - I'm too tired to write down what it can do (its 4:00 AM) but it's the only software you need to feel safe. When your PDA gets stolen it even sends an SMS with GPS coordinates as well as the number of the inserted SIM card to as many numbers as you like (so you can give them to the Police and smile 'cause they will have everything they need to find the thief). It has tons of options and every single one can be set as you like. Just remember - once installed it cannot be uninstalled (ever) - manufacture restore is the only solution.

Lock the screen but leave the GPS module running?

I don't know if this is really just a "screen lock with disabled bits" or if this is some full-blown idle mode, but I was wondering...
I don't have any car-accessories, but I'd still like to use TomTom. Now, TT offers some nice voice guidance, which is more than enough for just getting around (if I ever get really lost, I can pull over and pick the thing out of my pocket).
However, leaving TT running in my pocket means that the screen is on, the display changes and thus battery will be drained considerably faster than if the thing would be locked... not to mention an accidental press of a button (it's in my pocket, after all).
However, locking the phone turns the GPS off, so even if I leave TT running in the background it does me no good.
Is there anything I could try out in such a case?
So... this is impossible? :/
Nothing specially made for that has been released that I know of.
But from info I could gather around, RunGPS has the capability to be set to turn off the display leaving the GPS running.
So you could just install rungps as well, set it to turn off the display with GPS on, and at the same time also run your fav GPS app, tomtom in this case.
What should happen is that the screen will go off with the GPS still working (thanks to rungps) and tomtom will run in background being now able to access the gps device (still thanks to rungps).
Still worse for battery than having only the useful app running (as rungps will take some cpu cycles for itself and will cause more load on the device) but should still be better than leaving the display on at all times.
Let us know your results.
hey what do you know, 900th post
Hmmm... strange... Last I've noticed my GPS kept runnung while the device was locked. I used NaviComputer to track a walk I did with a friend and had my HD2 locked in my pocket most of the time.

uhm, don't let that fool you.
First times I used navicomputer just for fun, I thought gps was running in background, but only later I realized that the GPS signal was restored right after turning on the display, and navicomputer was showing a straight line going from my latest positiotn before turning off the display, to the first positiotn it got after wakeup... and I'm sure of that since I double checked several times
In case you check and you DO have your GPS on at all times with device in standby using navicomputer, please let me know the list of installed programs you have (I doubt it tho)

Normaly the numbers are on "4" - put this on "1" and gps should stay awake even when you put the phone in standby.
It will stay on until a program stops using the gps.

Try this. It works on my HD2. I use Run.GPS to log my tracks while jogging or mountain biking.
Other way to keep gps-fix while screen is off - you have to do only a "screen off", not "standby". I did it with AEButtons+ (e.g. screen off on long-press green call-button) - but with this reg-changes it works better for me.
Or you can only lock your phone and let it go to standby on its own. Then gps-fix will still keep alive. GPS-fix only gets lost if you press hardware-power-button (red end call button) - and registry not changed like above.

as far as I know rungps is able to use the gps during screenoff as a feature.
I tried locking the device without pressing endbutton, but navicomputer loses the fix no matter what.
I also noticed thos reg patchesin some other thread but I also read there that other users tried them with no avail; did you test those registry fixes with software other than rungps by any chance?
Without these reg-changes i tested RunGPS and when i press hardware-power-button - GPS-fix was getting lost.
If i only did a screen off - then GPS-fix was still there.
Now with these reg-changes i can press hardware-power-button during running RunGPS and GPS-fix is still there.
I did only test with RunGPS because that is the only GPS-app i want to use while screen is off/device in standby.
If i use a navigation software (iGo8), then i want to have screen always on- so i didn´t test this scenario.

I see, thank you, let's wait for the OP to test this himself.
Since I already knew rungps has a feature to turn off screen without losing gps signal, I don't think it's the reg settings, but rather it's rungps itself that allows you to do that; since you couldn't test different apps we don't even have a verification
I may try to get at it tomorrow, no guarantee I'll have the time tho
I´ve installed sportypal, too. Maybe i can make some tests this weekend.

All right! I'm back with some results. Now, a quick note: I switched to MapaMap, a Polish map application, as it has a lot better maps for Poland.
I performed two tests: firstly, I started a route around the street and used the softftware lock to lock the screen. Result? MM application kept running and kept talking to me. Nice. However, this is still vulnerable to the physical button being pressed and locking the phone; when that happens, MM looses GPS and, in fact, I think the system somehow pauses this applicaiton altogether (more on that in the next bit).
So, since the physical button is still possibly a problem (after all, during driving the phone is in my pocket, and it's not really difficult for that button to be pressed), I tweaked the registry as Bib_x suggested. However, it seems that even IF the GPS module was still running, the MM application enters this weird suspended state, and whenever I resumed it, it would always greet me with a "searching for GPS signal" message. Granted, it would find the signal very quickly, but it still didn't work while the screen was off.
The odd thing is that mode the application went into. Normally, when it's minimised, I can pick it from the task-switcher and bingo! It's instantly back up. But when I press the hardware lock button and then unlock the phone, I get the Windows "please wait, I'm working" wheel in the centre for a while, before the app is restored.
I can check with TT again to see if the problem is restricted to only MM, but something tells me it's not an isolated case. So now I'd need to figure out a way to keep MM working when the phone is locked; kind of like the music player.
EDIT: TomTom resumes a lot faster, but it still looses GPS; right after resuming it says "no GPS device", and that's with the registry changes applied and after restarting the phone.

exactly my experience with any other gps software.
Didn't even try the reg tweaks as I didn't trust them that much.
Just try installing rungps as per my suggestion and using that at the same time with your fav navigation software, maybe the fact that rungps keeps the gps subsystem working while screen is off makes also the other app do its job.
After some more fooling around, I've made it, albeit I fear this method might be limited to MapaMap only.
When installing MM there are two options: either installing onto the HD2 or directly onto the MicroSD card. The former option will always install something called "wake up plugin" (might be worded differently in English) which doesn't show up in the "remove applications" menu, so it's more of an integral part of MM and probably can't be removed in this case. In the latter option, this plugin won't be installed, and in fact, is unavailable.
Initially, I've installed the app directly onto the phone, so that plugin was included automatically. My guess is that THIS was the bit responsible for putting the app into some sort of "sleep" state. However, when I installed the app onto the SD card without the plugin, I could lock the phone using the end-call button and the app wouldn't shut itself down like that; it even kept talking to me during the ride, so everything worked. Once more, I can confirm: THE SYSTEM KEPT ON WORKING DESPITE BEING LOCKED - I drove quite a distance and took some different turns, and the phone kept nicely informing me of the new distance and of upcoming turns.
This was all done using the registry settings suggested in this thread! Without them, the app will loose GPS data when the phone is locked, and if I set it to record my movements, it'll create a straight line between the start and end point, with a "no GPS signal" in the middle
EDIT: Do the registry values 1 and 4 mean "always on" and "always off"? What about values 2 and 3? I'm assuming there's no way to make the GPS module "smart", so that it's turned on only when needed? Or is it possible to add a manual switch for the GPS module to the Comm Manager?
GPS will only be on if a program sends this comand. And if you end the program, then this program sends a kill-comand to gps.
Have you tried with Pocketshield screen lock?
There is a setting at Locking > "Except when...", there you add exceptions to applications which will be allowed to continue running with the screen turned off.
The reg edits work for me with GPS Tuner and google maps, not with iGO8. I had actually tried that myself, but only the ones in "unattended" and set to 0 instead of 1 (as that's the fix that's used to keep music playing in Coreplayer and that works), but apparently it wasn't enough for the GPS. Good news

GPS, Social Network Sync, Flash, Screen Burn, General lag

So this is sort of a multipurpose post, just saying some of the issue I have had with my Vibrant, and some of the possible solutions or at least information that I believe will help toward finding a solution.
About the GPS, this is what I have noticed:
I am pretty sure this is a software issue and this is why- I've noticed that I only have a problem when I am using the actual GPS and the network based location. I started to notice this first in Foursquare. Even when I could get a lock in Maps (albeit with a blue circle indicating it wasn't terribly accurate) Foursquare would always show where I last checked in... then I realized it wasn't showing where I last checked in, it was showing where I last was located using the GPS. I found that if I turned off the "Use GPS satellites" option, and only used the network location option, Foursquare (and indeed any other GPS program) got my location near instantly. Similarly, when I had only the satellite option checked (and not the network location) as long as I was outside I got a pretty quick and steady lock. When I put both options back on... everything all crappy again. So I've been keeping the actual GPS off unless I'm using navigation, in which case I switch, and I haven't had an issue yet. So I think this is something that they can fix in an update. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.
In regard to Social Network Sync:
It was driving me nuts that half the time I looked in the settings menu it would show that Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter (the Samsung variants) had "errors." Then I realized that for whatever stupid reason, they seem to only run into these errors on wifi. If I turned wifi off and synced... it worked. Turned it back on... didn't work. I tried this a few times. However, that said, the Social Network Sync is kind of broken. For example, even if you have it set to download all of your Facebook friends, after the first time it won't. To add them, you have to go into "Link contact, Get Friends, Facebook" and then check who you want to add .This is kind of annoying, and hopefully will also be fixed with a software update. Again, any thoughts would be appreciated.
About Flash:
This is honestly my biggest issue with the device. If you look in the applications it does have Flash lite. It just doesn't work. Coming from an almost flawless Flash experience on the MyTouch Slide to this is really not fun. The reason this annoys me so much though is because in apps that utilize the browser (for example NewsRob) whenever they load a page that has flash on it, you are kicked into the browser and get an error message (webkit error, file not found or some such.) When I'm browsing through articles in NewsRob it's incredibly annoying to have this stupid error message (which opens the browser, then an error, so it takes three back presses to get back to the article, all of which have a little delay.) Again, this is something that 2.2 should fix, but it's still frustrating. If anyone knows of any possible solution to this it'd be greatly appreciated.
Screen burn in I discovered today.
Much to my dismay, I noticed today that the clock digits were burnt into the screen, much like how the notifications were burnt into the screen on my Nexus One. The difference is that this took awhile to happen on my N1. Not three weeks like I've had the Vibrant. I don't know if this is permanent or just temporary, I have a pure white background open full screen right now, and will run like a color flashing thing next, hopefully this will get rid of it. If not... that's just excessively disappointing. I love love love having what is literally the most advanced screen technology in existence, and having a literally perfect black level, but screen burn in on a few week old device (that has been set at low or auto brightness since day one) is just not acceptable. I will post again after a day or so of white screen/colors and let ya'll know the results. But it's frustrating. Has any one else noticed this yet? Or have any other possible solutions?
Lastly, lag.
I've noticed that the ONLY lag on the device comes from stupid TouchWiz and the Buddies and Feeds widgets. With them disabled the device FLIES. With them on, it's slow and occasionally has to be force closed. For now I have the widgets in question disabled, but this is vastly annoying, and really makes me wish I had my MyTouch Slide back (except with this screen and processor lol.)
So, in conclusion, I generally love this device. But the second T-Mobile announces The MT3GHD, it'll be on eBay faster than you can say Android 2.2 with Espresso lol.
Quick update, jscreenfix app from market fixes the burn in, I let it run for about an hour. I'm going to do that every week just to be safe.

In Location settings, there are two options, Use wireless network and Use GPS satellites. What I am saying is that if BOTH of these options are turned on, it doesn't seem to work properly. If I only use wireless networks, it works (even indoors) but isn't terribly accurate. If I use GPS only, and I am outside, it works, accurately. So I am just saying there seems to be some disconnect between the wireless network location and GPS location working in sync like they normally do.
And (@lemarg) I don't see how my post is whining, I'm just pointing out some observations about the issues I (and other people) been having with the phone. Maybe I misunderstand the point of a forum.

NFC works only with the screen on and unlocked? Disappointing...

My plan was to have a small NFC tag that I keep in my car and just touch my phone holster with it to turn on bluetooth, turn off wifi, etc. without taking the phone out and fiddling with it. Same deal when I get home, just wave my phone on an NFC tag on my desk to set the home profile.
This is my first NFC phone and didn't realize that the screen needs to be on and unlocked for NFC to work.
Any apps that can change this behavior or do we need a custom ROM for it? And if possible to do, would having NFC enabled at all times, even with the screen off kill the battery which would kinda defeat the purpose then? Or is the NFC radio less power hungry compared to bluetooth or wifi?
NFC turns off when the screen is off to save battery, would you like NFC to be on all the time?
There was a hack for this over on the Skyrocket board. it requires ROOT and replacing the stock nfc.apk with one that's been modified to allow the NFC to work with the screen off.
It won't work with google wallet. . .
I believe google wallet requires a pin code to enter before you can use it.

That's fine, I would not want it to work for Google Wallet without me looking at the screen If it can work with NFC Task Launcher it is good enough.
How power hungry is NFC if on all the time? I'm trying to find an easy way to turn bluetooth on when in the car without fiddling with the phone. More often than not I don't turn it on and ignore calls while driving (probably safer this way anyway) because it takes too long to take the phone out of the holster, unlock it, turn bt on, etc. rinse and repeat when I get out of the car.
I guess I should try and leave bluetooth on all the time and see how bad it is for the battery.
Seems to me like they were fixing a security hole. Being able to use NFC with the screen off means anyone is able to just tap against your pants pocket in hopes of receiving data from your phone. This is the future, people. **** like that would start happening. It'd be the new pick-pockets. Let's call them: pick-chips.

Yea, you don't want to be able to use NFC with the screen off. Talk about major security issues. Someone could just bump into you and transfer some malware to your phone. You don't want this.

It could work with a whitelist of apps that are allowed to respond to NFC events with the screen off. I would only set NFC Task Launcher to process such events and only for a set of recognized tags. Any other NFC interaction would be a NOP.
Surely you can see the power management and security advantages to having it this way. I understand not everyone would have chosen it to operate this way for themselves, personally.

Google Smart Lock still not working, lets find a way to make it work again.

Hey guys,
I had to reinstall my Note 8 yesterday, with the fact that (like many other note 8 users) my google smartlock isnt working anymore.
I had it working by accident, out of the blue the smartlock menu opened on my phone and let me choose my trusted locations.
Can`t figure out why it popped up, but it just did once without that i triggerd it.
Anyhow,i reinstalled my phone yesterday and its not working anymore so i really want it to work again.
I did some research this morning to find out which service/activity has to be opened to show the smart lock menu.
I found a that a few activities from the google play services open up parts/options from the smartlock menu, but the actual menu to select the option to add trusted places or activate the body detection.
The body detection can be activated manually if you use a activity launcher.
There has to be a way to activate/open up the menu for the smart lock settings, we only have to find it.
Anyone has an idea how we can manage it?
Any idea`s are welcome, maybe we can figure it out together.
I found out how it works, not by opening a service or an activity but how to trigger the smartlock menu.
First of all you need to activate google smartlock as trusted agent.
Then you go to google maps and set your home location, once you did that you have to unlock your phone multiple times.
I didnt count how much times you need to unlock your phone, but its a guess around 30 a 40 times could be some more could be some less.
You have to do it in your house location, while unlocking there is some kind of counter which counts how many times you unlocked your phone in your house.
After a while when your unlocking your phone the smartlock notification will pop up and tells you that you have unlocked your phone for in the house area for a dozen times.
It will allow you to click on it and set your location as trusted place.
Also it allows you to enable body protection, trusted devices, and trusted voice.
It happend to me yesterday while using the phone for a couple of times and i had to unlock it for a couple of times.
Be carefull, when you extit the menu there is no option to get it back again.
Well, only the next morning because the phone will prompt a message that the lock has been enable for not using the phone for 4 hours.
Thats the only time after the first time that you can change your settings.
Hope you guys are helped with this information.
Trusted Places.
Been playing with this this morning in the aftermath of flashing Lineage onto a Moto G phone and Nexus 7 tablet (great ROM BTW and my first foray into phone hacking !)
Despite appearing to set up correctly I found TP didn't actually work but I think I've come up with a fix which has worked on both the above devices plus a stock Sony Xperia Z2 and my OH's Nexus so that's 4 for 4 !
1. Go to Trusted Places
2. If you've already added a place then long touch it and edit, if not touch Add Trusted Place
3. When the map pops up touch it then on the full screen place a finger anywhere and move the map around under the pin a bit then position the blue dot under the X below the pin.
4. Now touch Update and it should come back with the exact address instead of GPS coordinates.
5. Now go back to Trusted Places and touch the location and check that it's turned on
That's it, you may get a warning message the first time you unlock afterwards but beyond that a simple up swipe from the lock screen should open it.
AAAAAA

Hi,
It only gave me On Body Detection and I enabled it but it doesn't work! Is there really no way to prompt it again? It really pisses me off, no Smart Lock in setting whatever i do... I just want my Dumbphone and Dumbwatch to work together so I don't have to unlock the phone 89789 times a day. I updated the Play Store Services, turned Trusted Agent on and off, rebooted the phone 1951951 times... I've been googling this for months and no solution... It's unbelievable to me that this issues persists for years and I can bet thousands of people wrote complaints to both Google and Huawei! And the worst part is, it used to work and it just stopped and disappeared for no reason at all... I don't want to root my phone as it is still under warranty and I don't want to lose it...
Thank you for any even potential help! Have a great day!
